He is a nice professor, but can occasional be a little confusing. Has a slight accent, but overall a nice person if you have a conversation with him.
Mosissa is a great teacher. He explains concepts very in depth at the beginning in each lab and helps you through the labs as you go along.
Dr. Fayissa is an excellent teacher. Fair grader, still loves learning and enjoys helping students learn; clear grading on lab reports and provides excellent feedback. Fair, understanding, maintains high standards.
First day of lecture I thought was going to be great, he spent time over syllabus and was really nice and seems caring. As the days progressed lectures became a drag, I found myself sleeping. I stopped going to lectures after first exam because power points are on BB. I never went to his office hours but was constantly at the tutoring center!
Absolutely deplorable. first exam average was 40%. second exam average was 51%. he DOES NOT teach, doesn't post notes on BB, doesn't respond to email, doesn't care about any of the students! worst professor ever.
Worst professor I've had so far. His accent is so thick you can't understand him, he refuses to post his lecture notes online, and he goes through lecture so quick you can't understand him. I had to go to other instructors for lecture notes and turn to online resources to understand the material better. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
He's a really nice person, but he's an abysmal professor. My e-mails were never once responded to, the class isn't engaging since he just reads the slides, which sometimes will be posted, sometimes won't, and his accent can be difficult to understand. I would not recommend taking this professor.
EXPECT TO TEACH YOURSELF! I relied on PPTs that he posted so I could study before exams, until he stopped posting. I don't think tests would've been hard if he had given similar practice problems during lecture. Not long useless examples that werent on tests. Post-final, everyone is on their toes waiting for a miracle to happen to their final grade
He has a very thick accent and isn't good at teaching the material, he reads off the slides and is very boring. He doesn't post any useful material to help review for exams, and rarely posts the powerpoints from lecture. If you take this class you will have to teach yourself all of the material, and still will likely fail all the tests.
He is a nice guy, but a horrible lecturer. He skips through practice problems on his slides and reads off the rest of the slide too fast w/o posting the slides on BB. If you can't learn from the textbook- AVOID, or get ready to learn, like me. If you want help or your email's to be answered, you have to ask after lecture or go to his office hours.
Dr. Fayissa wasn't a very helpful lecturer.. After attending a few classes, I chose to sleep in instead. Read the textbook and did practice problems. Learned the material myself. Received an A on last two exams and B on final. Do not expect to do well unless you are disciplined enough to read the text and learn it yourself.
Dr. Fayissa is a fairly nice, genuine man. But he should not be in the field of teaching. His heavy accent and monotone voice makes it very hard to understand what he's saying. I didn't learn a single thing from his lectures. He takes his slides straight from the textbook. PLEASE if you love yourself, DO NOT take his class!!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. I'm not sure why but he was the only professor teaching CHEM 212 this semester. I had to take him to graduate on time. You will not learn a thing from his lecture. It is impossible to understand him due to his heavy accents. His lectures are just reading off the powerpoint. Prepare to learn by yourself from reading the book.
He has is not helpful outside of class. His lectures aren't clear, and he doesn't post notes or any supplemental help.
Fayissa is one of the worst professors I've ever had in my academic career. His accent makes everything hard to understand, the material is extremely difficult, and you feel like you are on your own with everything. I will never take Fayissa again
Professor Fayissa is one of the worst professors I've ever had so far. The class average on the 2nd exam was a 30%. He is a really really nice guy but his voice and accent are horrible. Be ready to teach yourself if you want to pass.
Fayissa is a very smart man, however teaching is not his specialty. Accent is very thick and he speaks very softly almost a mumble. Does not post pp to blackboard. Class average on exams was always below 50% . He does curve.
can't understand what he is saying
Does not post powerpoints online, and he does not explain well.
One of the worst if not the worst professor I have ever had. I could never understand what he was saying during lecture because of his accent and lack of annunciation. His tests were really hard. Does not post powerpoints online and moves pretty fast through the slides. Class average was always around 50% or less on exams. Do not recommend.
Don't take him. Lectures are awful.
Dr. Fayissa is a very kind professor who cares a lot about students. However, he is overall not a good professor. The reason is that he has very heavy accent which makes understanding difficult. If your strength is not chemistry, this class will be difficult for you. I am a chemistry major, but I still got B- because I didn't read all chapters.
Not a good professor. His lectures are not clear at all, so you will wonder what is he explaining. You will also notice that so many students are skipping classes because lectures are not helpful at all and they couldn't help themselves at all.
Dr. Fayissa is a good professor. He tries to make this class as approachable as possible and he wants all students to be successful. His tests are very fair. If you want to get an A, just go to class, work on problems he goes over, and make sure you read every single chapter. It's that simple.
He is very kind and caring professor, but he is a terrible grader. He takes off tons points on tests for small mistakes. It's like if you make a little mistake, you will lose most of the points for that question. Really tough grader. Also, his lectures are not very clear. Please don't take this professor.
He's a very kind professor. He teaches materials well and he is truly more than help you if you ask for it. Highly recommended!
Dr. Fayissa is a really good professor. He spends a lot of time thinking how to make exams in a way students should know materials properly. No matter how people say, he explains well regardless of his heavy accent. He is also a very kind professor who loves to know his students and help them whenever they need.
Horrible. This professor has very heavy accent, so I had to sit at the front and pay a strong attention to understand him. You will basically have to read the textbook and take your own notes to do well. There were only 20 students coming to class, so the huge lecture room seemed almost empty. The only positive thing about him was his personality.
Lectures were not unclear at all. I had no problems with understanding him. Dr. Fayissa was very kind and helpful when I went to his office hours. I found he also teaches Physical Chemistry Lab which is one of my required courses. I will definitely take him again next year.
Amazing! Very caring about students and he helps you as long as you show yourself.
This professor is amazing. He is very caring about students and he helps you as long as you show up.
Dr. Fayissa is Amazing! I took CHEM 212 with him and I can't wait to take him again for Physical Chemistry LAB next year. He's always there for his students and genuinely cares for everyone's success in his class. Extremely helpful! Exams can be a bit tricky but you will be fine. Don't worry. Best Chemistry professor at GMU! Take this guy!
Good professor. For a subject as difficult as Chemistry he makes his best effort to teach well. As long as you do your homework, read the textbook, take your own notes, do practice problems, and understand the formula's you will do fine.
You know what? I love Fayissa. The dude's a bro and his exams are pretty much what's covered in lectures and practice problems. Homework are challenging and if you know how to do them without being shaky, you can get A's on all his exams.
Dr. Fayissa is a very understanding professor and will do what it takes to help you pass. Chemistry is a hard subject but if you know the practice exams inside out, you will pass the class. He is available for help in person and over email, overall a very kind and genuine professor. Highly recommended!
Dr. Fayissa is the best and very knowledgeable in the subject. He truly cares about students and try to put you up. Highly recommended !!
Dr. Fayissa is the best professor! I loved having him for both General Chemistry 1 and 2. He genuinely cares about his students and wants to help them anyway he can. I would definitely recommend him! He makes Chemistry enjoyable.
Dr. Fayissa has very heavy accent, but if you sit at the front it's easier to understand him. His lectures will sound clear to you if you read the textbook ahead. Make sure all of you attend his lectures so that he will post notes on BB. He was really nice and helpful when I went to his office hours, but he really needs help with enunciation.
A great professor! Take this guy!
The nicest person, but the worst professor.
Honestly, this course was about as hard as I would expect. Put in time and it will be ok. It was one of my easier classes. He was really sweet, really nice, really approachable, and really knowledgeable. Grading is fair because the tests are multiple choice and the free response aren't bad if you read the textbook and practice the chapter problems.
Dr. Fayissa is a great professor. Chemistry is difficult for some people but you're in college, it should be. The lectures covered key topics found in the book. Lectures aren't there to cover all the exam material. They are for covering key concepts to focus on. Read the book. Definitely take him!
Oh yes!
He's not really good at explaining, he will be willing to help you if you go to his office hours. Make sure you get prepared before going for help because he can't have spoon feed you. Although he doesn't lecture well, he is helpful individually. He is a really nice professor. I hope to take him again.
A very tough grader
Excellent professor. Take your own notes and do your homework and you will get an A.
Professor Fayissa can be confusing during lecture because he goes through the material really quickly, however if you set up an appointment for one-on-one help he will be there to explain everything in depth. He's pretty lenient on grading, show him that you are honestly trying and he will help you pass :)
Professor Fayissa is amazing! I love his class! Definitely my favorite professor at Mason!! I would recommend him to anyone. He teaches very well.
I took his course in the spring semester and got an A+. However, his lectures were not always easy for me to follow. This was because he had a very heavy accent that I couldn't hear what he was saying. His exams were extremely easy and straight from practice problems. He only tests you concepts that are essential to know. They aren't made randomly.
Tests are really hard and usually a lot different from any homework problems that you did. There is a curve but your homework and test grades have to be decent as well to pass the course.
Awesome!
I don't think it's fair to say that he's a bad professor. There are two good things I want to point out. 1) He's really nice and caring person 2) He makes exams in a way how students should properly understand the materials. However, all he does is reading off powerpoint slides and it's like he made them by taking straight pictures on the textbook.
A really nice person
If you are required to take Chemistry 211 or/and 212 and want an easy grade, I would definitely recommend this guy. His exams are extremely easy and it's impossible for you to not do well as long as you do just a few practice problems on the textbook.
He writes more details separately as he goes through powerpoint notes and he explains very well.
He's the worst professor ever. He does not post notes on blackboard and he's terribly bad at teaching. He just reads off the power point and confuses us by going beyond necessary details. I did not learn a single thing in his class. Exams are also brutal because they are nothing like homework. Self learning was extremely painful.
Will take him again.
It's based on what you think. If you want an easy A and don't like chemistry, avoid him. If you have a passion for this class, then you will find that he does not explain well, but he is a really nice guy and is willing to help if you visit his office hours. Personally, I think he is kind, caring, and genuine professor. He likes to help students.
Dr. Fayissa is a kind professor. He loves his students and is a very good person to ask for help. If you show him that you are trying, he will help you do well. This is a Chemistry class. It's not meant to be easy.
Easy class and wants students to do well
Great class. Lectures were good and exams were all based off exactly what was covered in lectures and homework assignments.
Professor Fayissa is a wonderful person. He is definitely one of the best people I've ever met, but he is absolutely the worst professor I've ever had. He basically tries to help students to pass, but he isn't very helpful. His lectures aren't clear and he does not fully post notes on blackboard as only few students come to class. Exams are tough.
Dr. Fayissa is another level of bad. He is not clear in lecturing and if you go to class, you will just sit there with absolute confusion. I did not learn anything in his class. Yes, he does not fully post notes on blackboard as most students skip classes. You must read. He is also a very tough grader as he rarely gives partial credit on exams.
Dr. Fayissa is not a good professor. I learned nothing from his lectures. I ended up just not going to his lectures and teaching myself all of the material. If you can avoid taking this professor, I would advise, but if not, then prepare to learn some of the material on your own.
HORRIBLE, just as bad as Oerter (A Physics professor). Half the class fails the midterms and the homework and quizzes don't accurately reflect the exam problems.
Dr. Fayissa gave us easy exams. Although he wasn't a good lecturer, I was able to get an A by reading a textbook and doing all homework. Teach yourself the material and just keep practicing homework problems until you are comfortable with solving all of them, then you will do extremely well.
This professor is great. The only thing I complained about him was his heavy accent that made understanding difficult. Other than that, he explains very well. I went to his office hours many times, so he knows me very well. He was very kind and helpful when I asked for help. Do recommend.
Dr. Fayissa was a great lab professor. He was very through and clear when explaining how to do experiments. Also, he walked around the classroom to help his students. Very kind and genuine professor. You should definitely take this guy for Physical Chemistry lab.
PROS: EXPLAINS VERY WELL, A REALLY NICE PERSON, HELPS YOU IF YOU ASK FOR HELP, CARING, WANTS STUDENTS TO ENGAGE IN CLASS, AND CURVES. CONS: HAS HEAVY ACCENT THAT MAKES UNDERSTANDING DIFFICULT FOR OTHERS, A VERY TOUGH GRADER AND VERY SMALL PARTIAL CREDITS ON TESTS, DOES NOT FULLY POST NOTES ON BLACKBOARD TO URGE STUDENTS TO COME TO CLASS.
Horrible professor. Tests are nothing like what you'll learn in class and homework. Lecture notes are not fully posted. There is a curve in this class, but even then, tests are really hard. You need to teach yourself everything with the book and study many hours reviewing and practicing problems every week to get a maximum grade on each tests.
Skim through the textbook before going to class. His accent is terrible, so sit at the front row and pay attention so that you can understand him. Take your own notes. He is a fair professor and he always sends important announcements through emails. Do all homework, do practice problems, and go to his office hours for help if you are struggling.
He's a good professor. At first I was failing an exam, so I went to his office hours and asked him how to study, and he helped me get on track and pass the exams. He's a really nice guy who is helpful outside the class. At first, I hated him, but his exams are easier than other professor's. You should definitely take him. Don't worry and go for it!
Dr. Fayissa is really through and clear when explaining the materials. It would be much better if his accent sounds more American so that people can easily understand him. The only thing I didn't like about him was that he didn't post all powerpoints on blackboard. He's a very kind professor and is always available during his office hours.
Dr. Fayissa is the best professor! He's very kind to you and cares about you if you go to his office hours for help. Do not hesitate to ask questions if you are having a hard time with materials. The most respected professor ever. He teaches very well/
BARELY PASSED! Pop Quizes!!! He is nice but he is one of those profs where things go in one ear and out of the other. He doesn't know how to put things in simple terms. Chem isn't simple but, he will go all over the place to say 2+24. If you have to take him, read the book and understand homework (he just copies the problems/may change the #s).
Awesome man, but awful professor. He is a very intelligent man with doctoral degree and it shows, but he cannot teach for his life. Tests are extremely difficult and you have to spend 10 hours reading all chapters to learn all the materials and keep practicing homework questions to get a good grade on each test. Very stressful class though.
Very easy class. Just study a little and you will probably get a decent grade. 10 out of 10.
Very stressful class. There are a lot of great things about him tough. He's a good person to ask for help if you need. Make sure you go to his office hours to fully learn materials. Make sure you read the book.
Very understanding and nice person, but not a good professor.
This guy is awesome. I can't recommend him though.
The class was one of the tough classes. This professor does really love students and tries his best to be helpful, but there are limits for him. His accent is really hard to hear, so sometimes I can understand him and sometimes not. Most people skip classes which has made him stop posting all notes. A really nice person, but a horrible teacher.
Personally, I think he does a great job at explaining things. I was able to understand his accent, but most people can't. Keep that in mind. His exams include problems exactly like or very similar to the online textbook homework he assigns. If you do those and study the material, you should be fine.
This professor sucks! He does not know how to teach. No notes posted. I had to read all chapters and take intensive notes (Dying) to fully understand the contents. He grades on a curve, but he is a very tough grader and will takes of tons of points for small mistakes. Do not take him unless you want to teach yourself all the materials.
I don't like to say this, but Dr. Fayissa is the worst professor I've ever had so far. I couldn't understand him at all due to his heavy accent. The class is so boring that only about 15-20 people go to class. It's really that bad. If you must take him, then get ready to teach yourself. His tests were pretty difficult as well.
Tough
Really good person to ask for help, but a awful lecturer. Lectures are dry and boring and he doesn't explain well enough for you to prepare for tests in addition to the fact that doesn't post notes on blackboard. The best person, but the worst professor.
A great lab instructor. Explains everything you need during pre lab lectures and grades fairly. He's also a great person and is very helpful during his office hours. It was a great pleasure having this professor.
His exams are fair, but the most problem I had in his class was listening to him. He actually teaches well, but has a problem with English pronunciation. This obstructs learning environment. Besides that, he was very nice and friendly when I went to his office hours. He curves as well. Choose him if you can avoid Weatherspoon.
if you don't show up to class, you're done. worst teacher in general his lectures are so bad but you might as well go. it was easy bc i took AP chem but if you didn't then you need to work. i got a B in his class when i should of had an A. he doesn't curve and if he did, it barely does anything even everyone did so bad. averages on tests were 50-70
Dr. Fayissa is very challenging. He moves really fast through slides and exams are very difficult. You'll probably need to spend more than 10+ per week on reading chapters and working on practice problems. Class is so boring and you might feel like you don't want to show up.
Amazing person in general, but not the best at teaching. Over half of the class failed, and it seemed like the exams didn't really make sense based on what we were taught in class
Awful teacher. He is very hard to understand and flies through power points then quizzes you right after. Class is incredibly boring but attendance is mandatory bc of quizzes. Study guides for tests are unhelpful and if you have miss a test for any reason he doesnt let you make it up. Often has trouble explaining things. Worst prof Ive ever had
Easy class and wants students to do well.
With him, you don't need to study much. If you go to class, study his notes, and fully understand how to do online homework, you can end up getting an A or A+. Very Easy Class. Had him both semesters. Exams are extremely easy. Must take him if you have a choice!!
The class was hard because he did not explain the topics very well. The only good thing about his class was the curve at the end of the year. It was difficult to understand him. He was available to talk. He responded your emails quickly. If you want to pass the class, go see the professor in his office hours and ask him questions.
He's not a very good lecturer, but he's very helpful in his office hours.
He can not be the best lecturer. However, he is not a bad person because he isn't too strict.
can't be the BEST lecturer, but he is a nice guy. kinda goes all over the place with his lectures, but if you took AP chem in high school you should be fine because it'll be a refresher course. Be sure to show up because he does iclicker quizzes every class, and the textbook work really isnt too bad.
Learning objectives are unclear. When asked for additional practice for exam prep he denied the request. He is terribly difficult to understand during lecture and often misunderstands in class questions. GPA killer. Mason really needs to get their chem department aligned if you can still switch your major DO IT. This class is not worth it.
Dr. Fayissa is a kind professor who gives students lots of time to ensure they have learned the material. He has a heavy accent and can be hard to understand but will write it regardless until you know it. He works very hard for the chem department and is one of the better professors.
To do well in pchem you have buy the textbook and solutions manual. The best way to study is go look at the questions first and then read those sections in the textbook. Practice questions on your own everyday and look up how to do them in the textbook. His exams are hard and you have to teach yourself. He curves at the end.
Professor Fayissa is an okay professor. He does provide everything you need to study for the exam. I cannot blame him for not doing well because Physical Chemistry is a very difficult course in general.
This professor is underrated. He does make reasonable exams. The biggest problem people have is not attending his lectures. Some of the problems he does in class show up on exams. He's a very kind and genuine professor that works really hard in the Chemistry department.
Dr. Fayissa is a very knowledgeable professor. Want an A with little work? Not his class. You will have guarantee to get an A if you put a lot of effort. His lectures provide you everything you need to know for the exams. He's more than happy to take questions and is very respectful toward students. He gives a huge curve at the very end.
Mosissa Fayissa's lectures are not very helpful. When it came to exams, I only studied the homework given. Exams are very hard but the final grades are curved. It is a tough class but if you work hard, don't sweat bad grades. They will probably be curved. Mosissa Fayissa is an ok professor, with a tough course.
3.8 GPA trashed after taking his class. Tell me how you can attend every class, get A's in physics, and A's in gen chem but wind up with a C in his class? The course was disorganized and the homework was not there to help you understand the course. It was busy work. The textbook does little to supplement. Good luck to all that must endure this.
This professor assigns reading and problems homework online but they're not available right away so if you want to get ahead, you can't. Coming to his lecture is only useful for the iClicker quizes that record attendance and quiz grades, but reads directly off his slides that are copied from sections of the book. Doesn't answer questions in class.
The class is hard, but Dr. Fayissa does his best. I did poorly on the 3 MC midterm exams, but there's homework each week, and iClicker quizzes every class. Since I did all the homework on-time and attended every lecture, those grades helped A LOT. Get the ACS review book to study for the final. He curved final grades -- I went from a C to a B.
He's really nice and wants you to succeed. Follow his powerpoint slides and do textbook problems on your own that are similar. He's very helpful in office hours. There's a massive curve at the end, my calculated grade was a 77 but ended up with an A.
There are downsides with this professor, he always reads off the powerpoints, he grades students differently. The average on the exams are 45%-55% max, It's unfortunate how he curves the exams with his unfair grading system,I expected more from this professor. There are no extra credit opportunities, and his teaching method is so confusing.
He teaches you nothing and expects you to pass the ACS exam. Don't reccomend him at all.
Pros: Solves questions by hand in class step by step, fair grader, and respectful. Cons: Reads off the ppts mostly, sometimes hard to understand, confusing lectures, hard tests, no extra credit opportunities. ACS based final exam which can be easier if you practice the ACS study guide.
He is surprisingly one of the better chem professors at GMU. His accent is hard to get used to in the beginning. Professor Fayissa cares for his students. Be sure to attend lectures for iClicker points and complete all the homework. A lot of his exam questions are exactly the same as the practice questions in his powerpoint slides.
Dr. Fayissa was kind, approachable,& always answered my questions w/ a smile during office hours. He never treated me like I was dumb even when I didn't get my goal grade on the 1st test. I did a ton of practice problems in the back of the book and from online to raise my grade. Accent is Yoda-esque but I had no probs understanding. Learned a lot!
Dr. Fayissa is one of the best professors in GMU CHEM department. If you have a choice in GEN CHEM II, definitely take it with him. Make sure to attend the lectures since many of the midterm exam questions are very similar to the practice problem he solves at the end of the lectures. I really enjoyed his class this summer!
hes a really nice guy. not a brilliant lecturer though. i wouldnt recommend taking his lectures online, as he does so via blackboard collaborate and bc he types the equations you cannot see him write as he mumbles. if you take him study the material before class otherwise youll be lost.
Review is for in-person classes. Lectures are okay, there are a lot of iclicker quizzes. Exams have a lot of questions from the lectures/iclicker questions. He is a little bit hard to understand but its not that big of a deal. There is a lot of online homework/quizzes. Final exam is the ACS exam, there isn't much preparation for it in class.
Mason's chemistry department is notoriously not great, and this professor is no exception. Very challenging exams and has a difficult accent to understand. His office hours can be helpful though, so visit if you're struggling.
One of the worst professors at Mason. Lectures were a waste of time and he never gives a straight answer. The exams are quiet difficult and he grades so harsh. Please save your tuition money and don't take his course. He is never leinent with time frames for exams and quizzes during pandemic. He should not be teaching this upper level course at all
Do not take his class. When I read the textbook most of the time I get confused with the concepts and I go to look over his lecture videos he makes, and I just end up confusing myself even more. You know I thought since I am in college the professors will all be good and know how to do their jobs, but I guess I was wrong. He doesn't teach well.
I hate to rip apart profs but man this guy is something else. This course itself was extremely difficult but he made it impossible to understand. The lectures were confusing and unclear, the exams were very hard and he does not have a clear structure for this class. He doesnt answer emails!! This was the worst experience ive ever had. please avoid.
This professor, although personality wise was a nice person, lacked greatly in his ability to teach this course. Physical Chemistry is hard enough on its own but the professor made it unnecessarily harder. I taught myself through the textbook, numerous issues with exams/quizzes, complete lack of communication between him and students. That sums it.
I feel like he didn't give enough practice problems to do, and he wasn't very good at explaining things. HIs accent is very strong as well.
The absolute worst professor. Doesn't communicate properly regarding times and due dates for exams and quizzes and is terrible at response by email. Ashamed to have waste money on a course where I had to teach myself the entire time with no help by this professor. Cannot express enough how horrid it was taking this course with him during a pandemic
Was awful. Did not curve, despite curving for previous years. Took advantage of going online, never uploaded practice, and homework was just textbook. Lectures were just him reading off the PowerPoint. Put zero effort into online school. Scheduled tests at the most inconvenient time, despite being asynchronous.
Very disorganized professor. Im ashamed to have spent 2k on a course where I had to teach myself the entire time. Going to lectures was a waste of time as I couldn't understand anything he's saying. He admits he goes super fast yet doesn't care. Schedules hw/quizzes/exams at the most inconvenient time. He's also terrible at responding to emails.
I dont care what anyone says, hes the WORST professor Ive ever had. His lectures felt like a waste of time, I dont get anything out of it. He doesnt explain concepts well. The textbook was more helpful. He never tells us beforehand when we will have homework or a quiz coming up. He definitely wants us to drop out.
Horrible professor.
Had him over the summer and all I can say it was probably one of the wort experiences I had ever had at this university. Exams were very difficult, the workload was ridiculously heavy, attendance is required even though he ever mentioned it. He would announce quizzes the day before. Can ONLY use scientific or any dumb calculator instead of graphing
His whole class is lecturing. He will not go into detail on how to perform a problem, he always says "you can figure it out on your own time". You have go to class and participate because it's part of the grade. The grade on blackboard is incorrect because it is not weighted, so do not believe what it says. Be prepared to teach yourself everything.
I regret taking him for Chem 212 over summer. Besides his thick accent, his teaching style isn't the best. He doesn't go into depth when explaining problems. He rushes through slides because he assumes we will understand even though we don't. Does things at his own convenience. Doesn't care about us. Not sure why he's making chem harder than it is.
Don' take his class. He has a very thick accent that makes it very difficult to understand him during lecture. All three of our midterms had a failing class average. Requires a lot of outside study time to truly understand anything. He doesn't answer questions in a very clear way. His TA didn't hold any test review sessions or offer any extra help.
I don't understand why he is still teaching at this University. Many students are doing poor in his classes, and it's purposely made difficult for no reason. It's GENERAL chemistry. This class feels like you have to have a doctorate degree in order to understand the material and perform really well on exams.
He is not accessible outside of class. He knows his content, but is unable to teach it. Class average at each midterm was a failing grade. Called class lazy and TA did too. Rest of chemistry department was just about as helpful. Do not take chemistry unless required by your major
Very harsh grader - he will not curve your grade no matter what. When I took his class, almost everyone was failing and our first test had an average of Fs and low Ds. He also does not teach very well. He just reads off slides without much explanation.
I don't know what's with the Chemistry department being particularly horrible. This professor is nice, which I appreciate; however, is not a great professor at all. He does not go out of his way to help students, expects us to figure things out, and makes the topics harder than it is. Those aren't the qualities of a great professor.
He is bad at explaining. He goes on long tangents and then after 10 minutes he says that none of what he just said is relevant to the course. His lectures do not proportionally cover what will be on the tests; ie he spent half of a lecture going over Lewis Structures and then there were only 2 questions on the test about them. He also has an accent
He is not a hard teacher just not a good one. Reads off of powerpoints most of the class. Engages students with an i-Clicker which you have to buy to not only do the quiz questions but also attendance. Highest class average for the three exams was a 52. The only positives were the curve he gave the class, and exam questions would be on the slides.
If you are able to teach yourself with the materials you will be fine. He's not that hard but he's just horrible at tteaching. He's at least helpful during his office hours. It just takes a lot of effort to do well in this class.
Literally a horrible professor -did not learn effectively from him.
My first semester was brought down (in more ways than one) by this class. His teaching was not helpful at all, he just read off of every slide and only one thing other than that the entire time (he showed us a visual/ball model, etc.) and it was the last week of lecture. The tests are difficult but all multiple choice and not many questions.
Prof honestly is really good professor. He is eager to help students who don’t understand the content- even taking zoom calls outside of work hours. The class itself is a weed out class so READ THE TEXTBOOK and try the problems. Go to prof if you want further explanation on why you got stuff wrong / what you don’t understand! Good luck :)
Difficult material, but great professor. Lenient on grading. Can be hard to understand him at times, he's soft spoken but if you ask him questions he'll always take time to explain. 4.5/5
I learned next to nothing from his lectures, he has an accent that can be pretty thick sometimes and he just reads off of power point slides. Do the homework because sometimes questions from that will show up on the exams. Also my class average for exams was a 50 and I don't know if he will curve yet or not but its pretty likely.
Took him during the 2016 Spring semester. He's a good professor at GMU. To get a good grade in his class, you need to practice a lot from textbook problems. I did that and I never got bad grades on all his tests and quizzes. Go to class, ask questions, practice, and do the homework, then you're will do well in class.
Great professor. Explains very clearly and is very flexible with grading. Highly recommended for Physical Chemistry lab.
His class was quite stressful for a general chemistry 2 class. First, his accent is hard to understand. I can only understand like two words. Second, the tests are very hard and confusing and I get a C average. Third, the final is hard and it dropped my letter grade.
Genuinely a good man. But not a great professor. He doesn't explain content fully because he's just so smart and expects everyone to know what he finds elementary. If you take him, I urge you to read the textbook and complete practice problems, otherwise, you'll be getting a grade you won't like. One major plus is his hefty curve though. Good luck.
He's alright, not as bad as people say in the comments. To do well in class, you need to read the textbook and practice problems.
I really liked this professor. I think he explains pretty well and I had no problems going to his class.
He's great compared to other professors. He's not too strict and his exams are reasonably difficult. Everything is based on problems done in class and homework. Just practice a lot and you will do well in class.
Mosissa has a very heavy accent making his lecture very hard to sit through and understand the concepts he goes over.
Literally a terrible professor, I don't know why he is still teaching lmao
I had Dr. Fayissa in a summer session. I am now in medical school. He was nothing but kind and approachable. I had a tough start to his class. We met 1:1 for his great advice on study skills. I pulled my grade up to an A- w/ dozens of practice problems from the book and online. He answered all of my emails and personally cared about me.
I COULD NOT UNDERSTAND THE MAN and he looked so confident in his lecture, but I had to sit there and form the words in my head. But he was already on the next topic by then. Switched out as soon as the first class ended.
No bc I dropped his class after the second week
I want to cry
Overall, most people are complaining about his accent but it's really not that bad. The iclicker quizzes in all his lecture are usually direct questions to the test. He is not the best at teaching the material probably because he expects you to already have a background in chem. Just study on your own and the do the homework and you should be fine.
I came into this class with zero background information in Chemistry. Dr. Fayissa expects you to already know the material, breezes through things like they're recap, refuses to walk through problems in class because "it's doing the work for you", lots of homework and failing averages in exams. Do the homework, it will save your grade (Auto 100's).
Besides the fact that he is very hard to understand due to his heavy accent, he doesn't care about your performance in his class. You can ask as many questions as you want, don't expect an actual clarification. I hardly showed up to class because I didn't gain anything from it anyway. Taught myself from the book and did okay.
Dr. Fayissa's class isn't as bad as people make it seem. His lectures aren't helpful if you didn't read the section in the textbook beforehand, but exams are not relatively difficult. To do well, understand the quiz problems, read and learn how to do every problem from the textbook and do the homework and you will be fine in this class.
The professor isn't as bad as others say. The reviewers below are those with bad study habits. Read over the topics and do the practice problems in the required textbook since General Chemistry 1 is math-heavy. There are iClicker quizzes in every lecture, so go to class every time! The exams are multiple-choice which come directly from the lecture!
Dr. Fayissa is the best professor ever. He uses PowerPoint lessons that go along with the online textbook and his lectures give examples on how to do problems. He has iclicker quizzes which show that you attend class and helps you understand the material. He is very funny and makes class enjoyable.
Dr. Fayissa's accent is hard to understand and he doesn't completely finish his thoughts. Read the textbook before class/learn the concepts before class, do the homework, and do the clicker quizzes to do well in this class. Sometimes his exams didn't match what we learned in class, but if you study for your ACS final you can really do well on it.
Even though the class itself was difficult and loaded with lots of material, Mr. Fayissa really struggled with delivering and explaining complex topics about chemistry. It was tough to understand him since he is french. Do not come to class late or he might not let you in, especially if you have in-person quizzes or exams.
Dr. Fayissa is amazing. He is always willing to help you when you are not sure of the material. As long as you put effort into his class, you will do well.
Heavy lecture-based. Explains in detail reading from ppt. Requires a textbook but u dont use. He is kind and listens to students. Wants students get succeed. Grading: 3 mid, 1 final(ACS), quizzes during class, and homework - easiest. Applies curve but do not rely on it.
He takes iclicker questions from class and put them into his exams. If you pay attention those are free bees. It is hard to understand his lectures if you go in not knowing what the chapter consists of, but if you go over the chapter in the textbook before class you will be able to understand what he is talking about. (go over slide questions!!!)
He is a nice man and is willing to help you figure out an issue if you come to him. However, he does not really know how to explain the material. For me, his lectures were useless and his powerpoints were not helpful either. I would recommend you read the textbook for notes and to get ahead as much as possible.
Don't come to class thinking you will get all your notes written. you will fall behind. Read the textbook and do notes ahead of time.I never listened to this lectures or used his powerpoints because they were not helpful and were only confusing. Instead, I came to class and ignored his lecture. I would read the online textbook and write my notes.
Overall a good Chem professor, very knowledgeable and willing to help. 3 Midterms and a final, with lots of homework and class i-clicker points as a good grade buffer. If you do homework and read the textbook you'll be fine. He does have a strong accent, but it is understandable. Pro-tip: go to office hours!
Very kind professor. Always willing to help when you see him during office hours and wants students to do well. Exams are not too difficult if you have good study habits. Definitely recommended.
He is nearly impossible to reach. If you are having any issues with anything related to the class, he does not do anything to help. I can't read his handwriting. Take someone else.
Although he was not perfect, he was still a pretty good professor. His teaching was clear and tests were reasonable. Showing up during his office hours was most helpful.
I took Dr. Fayissa on CHEM212 and CHEM331 and I definitely think he's a great professor. He likes his students asking questions and always helps them out during office hours. His exams are moderately difficult so it requires a reasonable amount of study time. Expect some self-learning and make sure you do practice problems in the textbook
Can't really read how genuine he is, but he would get easily frustrated with students in class and even mocked an autistic student during lecture once. Was kind of elusive and hard to reach, plus he didn't let me look at my 3rd midterm before the final exam for no reason. Not that passionate or that great of a lecturer. Would avoid him if possible.
He had very hard tests to the point where the entire class got a curved average of 20% and he had to give a full class a retake. lectures are very confusing due to his pronunciation of certain words. He also ignores questions and when he does answer them he is confused on the question is about. he will also rush content which leaves you confused.
Worst teacher I've had for chem. None of his lectures tie to the homework or questions he asks during the class. The microphone he uses distorts his voice so if you sit in the back of the lecture hall, you're screwed. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you miss a lesson where he uses the iclicker's you get a 0/5 for the number of questions missed.
Please for my own sake do not take this professor. It make seem like you have no options but please pick someone else! He's almost impossible to understand, attendance is graded by pop quiz questions during the lecture, the exams are horrible NO RETAKES, the only thing that will save your grade is the hw that takes 5 hours to complete on a good day
As a STEM major coming into GMU with a 4.2 high school gpa, all of my classes been doable besides this class. Fayissa is the worst professor i have ever seen. unless you sit in the front row you will not be able to hear him, or understand his accent. u WILL fail some exams. class average for the first exam was 52% the average of the second was 40%!
Lectures hard to understand, he does not communicate what is on the tests properly. I would recommend to not take him even if he is the only option, it might be better to take chem later on.
I would rather jump off of a cliff without a parachute then ever take this class again. If this man was the last person alive that could teach me, I would still not retake this class. Do yourself a favor -- do whatever it takes not to take this course.
Tests do not correlate to what he "teaches", or the hw's. the class average is consistently an F for every test. Unbelievably awful professor who is very hard to understand. would not recommend to my worst enemy.
The course was extremely difficult due to the teaching style. There was a large disconnect between tested material and learned material.
The only reason I'm passing this class is because of my own study habits. I go to the lecture for the iclicker points since missing them hurts ur grade, but I just do work for other classes. He's really hard to follow and I never understand anything in lecture.
This professor is a kind guy that tries his best to connect with his students while it's clear that he understands his stuff he has a hard time communicating it to beginners. Chemistry is one of those courses in which you get it, or you don't, his teaching style doesn't help many to reach the point in which you get it. Very fast paced, not ideal.
DO NOT take this class. Especially if you are a Chem major. Dr. Fayissa is, for one reason or another, not equipped to set you up for success. As a 4.0 sophomore who is decent at things like calculus and physics, this class was an infuriating nightmare from beginning to end. I would wait to take chemistry instead of taking it from him
Honestly, not the best prof to take for chem. As someone who has good grades in other classes the chem grades in his class is the only one threatening to hurt my gpa goals for the semester which is very unfortunate. His exams are not the greatest and his lecture and homeworks dont really resemble what actually shows up on the exam.
test were hard but hes a nice person
Professor Fayissa is a good professor. His accent can make hard to understand sometimes, but his lectures are informative and engaging. If you just pay attention, and participate in class, perhaps you will pass. Don't think you can just wing this class. The homework load is heavy, but doable. As long as you understand the material, you will do fine
Wouldn't recommend. Tests are shockingly hard, and the class average is almost always very low. His lectures are pretty mid and his accent kind of makes it harder. But you have to come to class because he has iClicker quizzes. I'd try someone else.
3 tests and 1 final. Weekly HW for the chapter being covered. Tests are 20-25 questions each so you can only miss a few before failing. I would recommend looking over his slideshows for each chapter and memorizing the practice problems because those same questions will be on the tests. Gotta put a lot of work in if you want to pass.
Dr. Fayissa is a tough teacher, but he tries his best to help his student. He may be difficult to understand at times, but there is a textbook available to use. You should attend all classes and study outside of class if you want to do well. His tests are tough, but he does curve them and gave us a retake on one of the exams.
Please take another professor!! His lectures were absolutely useless and ended up self studying the entire course. Only went to lecture for the iclicker quiz questions which were random and impacted grade. Class average on exams were very low usually around 50% and only got worse. Tests were also usually around 20 questions so easier to fail.
The professor, himself, is fine, whatever. The biggest issues are the content that he teaches barely lines up with the 3 exams + the cumulative one and that pop-quizzes pop up often, each time requiring an iClicker. That tool is mandatory, btw. This class is NOT beginner friendly, so prepare to take a lot of notes and do extra research on your own.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! This is the absolute worst teacher for CHEM 211. His class is very lecture heavy and the slides are often not helpful. He gives ~5 question quizzes most class periods on things you have just learned and had no time to study beforehand. The tests are super hard, but there is a large curve at the end of the class.
Got the first test in my life that I ever failed. The average for exam 2 was a 40%, and he had the audacity to say it was our fault. Gives no time to take notes. I thought I would enjoy chemistry but this guy completely ruined it for me. Lectures are pointless, I learned the curriculum through the homework and you tube.
Definitely in the GOAT debate. You gotta put in a shift but with Mosissa at the wheel you're chillin. Everyone thinks the tests are crazy, but show up to class and study and you should do well mate. Homework is on ALEKs and there's not too much. Lectures get a little lengthy (I'm in one rn) but this guy makes me want to learn chemistry. COME ON!!!
This professor has some flaws, but he's caring and wants all students to do well. Exams are not unreasonably difficult and you will do well if you dedicate yourself to studying. Read the book, actively participate in class, and ask questions during office hours. College is where you are expected to do some self-learning.
Negative reviews are biased. No matter what people say, he's a pretty decent professor. His exams are meant to see your true understanding of the materials and there shouldn't be a surprise. Do not expect to do well if you are just willing to ease your way through the class without preparation.
Fayissa is nice and quickly to emails, but that is the only good thing. Very hard tests, for the first 2 exams was 40%. Lectures are a waste of time, he just reads off the PowerPoints and will give an iClicker quiz immediately after with no time to respond. I would never take him again if I didn't have to.
Probably the most miserable learning experience i've had. He's a nice guy but he really can't teach and there is a large disconnect from what he "teaches" and what is on the test. Test averages are 50% for most exams. HW takes 2-3hrs each week. The only reason I passed this class is because I taught myself and studied insanely hard. DO NOT take.
Gives iclicker quizzes every class outta nowhere and uses it for attendance as well, study those cuz theyre likely to show up on exams, do practice problems. ALEKS hw is doable but start them ahead of time don't cram til last min. He is very nice and responds to emails quickly. Exam averages ~40%, MC exams approx 20 questions.
when his test averages were 30-40%, he put a letter from a child prodigy on the projector to illustrate what an amazing teacher he is, and told us all we weren't putting in the work instead of asking himself why so many students were struggling. chemistry can be intuitive and fun. take another prof so you can get the most out of it
Dr. Fayissa should be taken for upper levels of chemistry, but not General Chemistry 1. Be aware that listening to his lectures can be long with all the mumbling.
This has been one of the most miserable experiences of my college life. I would rather jump out of a plane than take this man again. Please save your money and sanity and take a different professor.
Prof. Fayissa is nice, but he sadly cannot teach well. He speedruns through his presentations and gives 5-question iClicker quizzes on content you just learned (and is surprised when the class averages on the exams are low). Only reason why I got an A was because I effectively had to self-study the course plus the huge curve at the end.
Professor Fayissa is an all-time great when it comes to Chem professors. He cares a lot about his students and wants them to succeed. The homework is on ALEKs and is pretty straightforward. His tests are a bit tricky but if you go to office hours or put in some effort you should be just fine. He's top 2 and not 2.
Horrible professor, avoid at all costs. Exam averages are terrible, around 30-40%. He warns against relying on the curve but generously curves grades at the end, causing unnecessary stress. His teaching is useless; lectures are mandatory but a waste of time. He's unfit to teach general chemistry, speaking at an overly advanced level.
Amazing! Very caring about his students and tries to help you as long as you show up!
One of the worst professors ive had. Second exam had an average of around 40%, after which the professor blamed the entire class for not putting in enough effort to prepare for the test. The lectures are bad as he explains stuff like the average student already has a phd in chem, and quizzes the class on the stuff that was just learned.
Fayissa is at it again at proving how being the head of the department of Chemistry doesn't mean much when your inability to be prepared to teach a class shines through way more. Students wrote the syllabus practically, didn't have the homework, didn't know when exams were and how long they take. Oh, no camera? No attendance. Have fun with that.
In the 4.5 years I've been doing undergrad, between various schools, Dr. Fayissa is the single worst professor I have ever had. When asked to clarify concepts in class, he lists why he put the example in the lecture and moves on. The class average on tests is 40-60. He hasn't responded to a single email I've sent and isn't available in person.
If you want a prof that is organized, is hard working, and cares about making sure students are on the right track, he isn't the one for you. It's a fend for yourself kind of course. GMU Chem department is notorious already and this guy is the reason. If you're not already a straight A student, pass this professor and DON'T take Chemistry at GMU!
When asking for help, I was met with unclear or even nonexistent answers and no help from the professor whatsoever. I had submitted learning accommodations that had been approved by the school, however the professor did not respect the accommodations. The lectures were very hard to follow and he always went at his own pace ignoring the students.
You will most likely do very poorly but he will pass you if you put in some effort. This was a 5 week summer course though. I am not sure about a full semester.
This professor is failing students with his incompetence and surface-level lectures. Multiple students, including myself, found it hard to get him to respond to emails, even when you needed his assistance. I did all the homework, attended all lectures, and paid for tutoring, and I barely got 15% back from this guy. Most miserable experience ever.
PLEASE LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS! UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE TAKE THIS CLASS! I took this class because it was apart of my requirements, I saw the negative reviews but I still thought I could handle it. I would spend over 8 hours on one assignment, there are 4 exams, each worth 20. This class was a waste of time and money, PLEASE TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!!!!!
He is difficult to reach even when you're struggling, our class exam average was like 46%. Which says a lot about the teacher. Most of your grade depends on exams, which most people fail, class exam average was never higher than a 65%, responds to emails very late. Honestly, he doesn't even teach, he just reads off a slide the whole class period.
Prof Fayissa's lectures can be hit or miss, but engage with the course materials and use Unstuckstudy AI alongside the free textbook to stay on top of the content. The exams are challenging, but worth the effort if you put in the work.
Very hard class, my friend and I spent double digit hours studying for his course just to only get a B. The quiz questions he puts on slides sometimes get put on the quizzes, so look at those. Otherwise good luck, but he curves like crazy at the end so don't worry too much. Attendance matters, so show up to lectures for the grade.
just don't take him. I can't understand half the things he says, he does an iclicker quiz every class, if you are absent (even with doctors note) he won't drop the grade from the one you missed. 0/10 do not recommend - current student of his
He is very lecture heavy without actually teaching anything. He reads from a screen, writes stuff down in the board, and expects you to know everything and do hard problems in 2 minutes or less. Any time you email him, he never replies and doesn't necessarily look in his students best interest, just comes in, reads slides, and then leaves.
Overall, a great professor. He cares for his students and tries to help. Thing is you gotta really concentrate during his lectures, otherwise you won't be able to gain any knowledge out of them. You gotta spend more time studying the lecture content. Until now, we had one mid-term, it was easy.
im the one who wrote the previous review i take back whatever i said
Can't understand him at all, he does problems on the board but he doesn't explain at all, expects us to know everything perfectly before lectures, and exams averages are so bad. Don't take chem with this professor if you care about good grades and actually understanding what you learn.
DONT take him if you want to have a decent grade in chemistry. Lectures will put you to sleep and aren't even comprehensible, plus much of the content on the exams is only touched upon briefly or isn't discussed at all. To give an idea of the difficulty of this class, at the start of the semester the hall was full, by the end only 1/3 remained.
The lab reports were naturally very challenging, as this class is the "writing in the discipline" for Chemistry Majors. Dr. Fayissa left some comments and pointed out errors but was forgiving overall regarding the final grade. You must prepare and study to do reasonably well, although not excessively or strainingly.
Accent is hard to understand. One attempt for exams while other teachers give 2. Quiz every class on new content. Your best bet is to read textbooks by yourself and then do the ALEKS assignments again for test prep. Although this is a hard class with a hard teacher, an A is possible. Also he curves at the end even if he says he wont.
This was a very difficult class and the professor was sometimes hard to understand but he seemed like a genuinely good guy and very intelligent. This class requires a lot of effort and time, don't expect to pass if you don't put in the work.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He teaches at a graduate level yet teaches undergraduate course work. His tests barely align with content covered in class and he does not curve. I spent at least 15 hours a week studying and it was a 3 credit class, do not take a class that is going to give you more work than it should.
He's a nice professor, but unfortunately, he has a lot to improve as a teacher.
Fayissa is a good person and genuinely cares about the class, but his teaching skills are subpar. The quizzes are easy to find answers for without doing the work, and I didn't study much for the class. Grades are based on exams, with class averages usually between 40-60%. The final was hard, but he curves grades a lot (D -> B-).
The professor is really nice, but the teaching style and exam questions don't match what we learn in class, poll everywhere, or on Alex. The practice exam questions don't cover everything on the exam, and the slide notes are too long and guide students to study unrelated material. Unfortunately, the class average scores around 40-50%. Please avoid!
Bruh don't take this professor.Even if you have to wait one semester to get a good professor if the classes fill up,don't take him! don't be cocky and think you can do it, you won't, you will waste tuition money.I'm highly positive I'll have to retake this course and I spent 5 days studying for his exam,so I tried..Ppl rating him well are lying lol
Doesn't know how to teach
Had to self study the whole course because he cannot teach for the life of him. He had massive mistakes in almost every exam but did not correct them. He let people cheat on 2 exams and didn't give them 0s because they didn't cheat on the final and 3rd exam. He does not care about his students grades at all. But he is a nice guy.
If you care about your mental health and sanity listen to reviews and DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS just wait another semester to take this class with another professor (I would put this in bold letters at the top of the screen if I could) head to patriot web rn and look for another professor please!!!
He is a nice person, but horrible at teaching. I don't understand why he is the only professor who is teaching this course; it feels like a nightmare that can't be avoided. The quizzes are full of unexpected questions, and usually require equations that have not been practiced in class. HARD homeworks too.
He is really nice, but I just had a hard time in his class. At the end of every class, he does a test, so you kind of need to take notes. The study guides kind of don't align with what he teaches in class. On the exams some questions are altered from the study guide, so you have to review that. Although the class is curved, so that's what saved me.
