Mulase's really funny and VERY energetic
nice guy, makes the class interesting
Mulase REALLY knows the material. EXCELLENT professor!
I enjoyed his class very much. I recommend anyone who wants to take a course with him.
mr mulase is funny
Mulase is an incredible teacher. ALWAYS happy and funny. He presents the material well and clearly. Homework and tests are chalenging enough, yet not too bad. He is great. I recommend him for any class.
This guy can teach! He explains the topics better than anyone. If you can take this guy for any course do it you'll be glad you did
Mulase is a very gidy man that enjoys teaching. His practice tests are similar to his real tests.... so study them backwards and forwards.
Motohico is an awesome professor and an asset to UCD. I enjoyed his lectures, and his practice exams were very similar to the actual ones. Overall, i had an awesome experience with him coming from my previous teacher Blake Temple... :-)
Mulase is really cool, perky, japanese dude. When i saw him i was like WHOA it's Tajiri from WWE (my fav wrestler).....he is really good at lecturing and gives out practice exams and the real ones are almost like it. Also, he lets us out early on fridays
Explained what we needed to know for the tests and didn't B.S. us at all or lecture us on useless information. Has practice tests which are similar to the exams. Overall was a good teacher.
Animated and cheerful. I was comfortable going to office hours and asking questions. Did sometimes wonder if his brain operated on a different plane all together. (told stories about dreaming answers to complex problems!)
Funny guy, tests not that hard if you do the HW and go to class frequently. As far as math professors go he's not the best but also not the worst. HW assignments very easy and he doesn't involve any super-tricky problems in his test. overall, decent
Really good teacher. His midterms are very fair, and his lecture style is one of the kind. Very clear headed, and explains problems well in his own unique manner.
Love the dude, probably the best math prof I've ever had in my life, actually made me understand the concepts. Practice tests are very similar to the final, to the point of changing numbers. Easy A if you try, and you can actually learn something, lol.
Mulase is not just a great professor - he's an awesome person. He really cares about getting the students to understand the material, and he teaches is in a way that makes you understand it. I would go out of my way to take another of his classes.
He was very difficult to understand and his tests were harder than most other teachers. His tests contained problems that we had never seen before. Also he expects you to do your homework on mymath lab and then choose some problems form the book. I don't recommend him. He made me hate calculus for life.
Dr. Mulase is the best professor ever!! He will spend time with you in office hours if you dont understand something. Exams are very similar to practice tests. Not just an excellent professor, but an excellent person. Highly recommend.
good stuff. friendly and fun
Good professor. I'd definitely recommend him.
Very cool guy. Easily the coolest teacher I've ever had. He teaches what is important and explains it very clearly. Also very funny. You can tell he enjoys teaching. He wants his students to succeed and will often tell encouraging stories during lectures. Awesome guy, highly recommended. Wish he taught 21B..
Very hard class. After every class i wanted to cry.
His class was relatively simple for me since I had taken AP Calculus in high school. His lectures are clear, but he focuses more on proofs rather than calculations. He is very helpful and is willing to answer all your questions. Tests contain simple calculations but a lot of proofs. Overall good teacher, funny at times.
best professor i've ever had. everything was clear. i didn't have to study and i aced the class. i wish he taught 21b also...and 21c. hahaha
Mulase is a great guy and means well for all his students. Don't be afraid to ask "stupid" questions! You might struggle if you've never taken calc. before (like me) but I'm glad I took Mulase!
Mulase is a nice guy, really funny. no homework for this class, grade is based off of 2 midterms and a final. however, if you have never taken calc before, I would encourage a lot of extra studying. the tests are very similar to sample tests that he gives.
This guy is the greatest. Everyone once in awhile he'd wrap up his lecture with an incredibly inspirational story of his past students achievements.
Best of best. He is extremely good in all area. You can ask him any question without restrain, and trust me, he knows lots of stuffs. His lecture is always fun and interesting. His tests and final are easy with open note, and generous curve. He has all that you can wish in a professor. Recommended for any math's lovers since he is very inspiring.
Professor focuses WAY to much on proofs in Calc. I got a 5 on my AP calc in high school and took this course for an easy A. Wasn't easy at all, even though i knew how to do math my own way, unless you know all the confusing why's for everything, prior knowledge won't help you here!!
Prof. Mulase is tough; he spends most of the lecture trying to help you get a grip on the conceptual ideas of the actual material and expects you to do the homework at home (that being said, I HATED webwork) which is tough if you are used to teachers just shoving examples down your throat which is NOT what he does. Very brilliant professor, though
This Professor was awesome, yet somewhat hard for those who didn't get a grip of the material. If you want to get an "A" for this class, you have to pay attention to whatever he does in lecture. Every problem that he shows in lecture is most likely going to be on the test. Be sure to be able to self-study if you want an A. Awesome overall
Mulase was such a fantastic teacher! I looked forward coming to every lecture because he was always so enthusiastic to teach. His lectures were more theory and proof-based than just examples, but reading the chapters in the book helped. The practice tests are just like his actual tests. He is a very inspiring teacher, and I highly recommend him.
Lectures are usually proofs and don't help much on homework or tests, but you CAN'T skip class. He memorizes ALL THE LECTURES. His stories are actually interesting and somewhat inspiring. Tests (identical to practice exams) and homework are very fair, despite the lack of partial credit. To get an A, you have to really know the content.
AMAZING professor. Very inspiring and funny. His class is difficult but not unreasonable. Work hard in this class and you will get the grade you deserve. His lectures are not mandatory but going to them will entertaining and you will leave every lecture with a smile on your face. He should be a model for math teachers around the world.
Very funny teacher, but his English sounds like Japanese when he speaks fast. But overall he doesn't give a lot of homework, so be prepared to review notes and books for exams.
He is really funny.
He was a very difficult professor. He started the first three talking about abstract stuff unrelated to the book. Later he slowed down. First midterm, the TA couldn't even do. I felt like he doesn't explain concepts clearly enough. I disliked his absolute grading scale (almost impossible to get an A, considering the material. Dreadful final! (ch14)
He's very funny and very smart. He has a bit of an accent, and if you dont like proofs then you shouldnt be in the 21 series. I recommend him
Definitely very funny, smart, and is clear with his lectures. A lot of proofs and some problem solving skills given. Do all of your WebWork assignments and review/memorize your notes and you will do quite well on your midterms. The final is quite long, although it is ok and is fair. Definitely an enjoyable teacher to have.
Mulase was very funny, and very likeable. I got a 5 on the AP Calc AB exam in hs (Hs didnt offer BC). I struggled in the class because I didnt really study at all, thinking I knew everything. He is relatively easy for a 21A professor, he does not make you prove limits, which is nice, but at the same time, is kind of tricky. I would recommend him
One of the best professors I have had for my first quarter at Davis. Very funny while also on track, his stories are really inspiring and can motivate students (at least me) to become more interested in mathematics.
Lectures involved proofs, proofs, and more proofs. He teaches the conceptual part in class, and expects you to learn how to compute the problems on your own. The webwork helps for practice and it counts for 20% of your hw grade, huge boost for your overall grade. Great personality, well liked, entertaining! Most definitely would recommend him!
Mulase is amazing. He's an absolute GENIUS. He's funny too. He really expects you to know your proofs, but after his class I could prove anything. His class is very doable. He's very clear about what is expected of you.
The professor you've always dreamed of. Bottom line: take his course
Lectures are very interesting, but all he does is proofs. I recommend going to discussion to clarify things up. Midterms and final are exactly like practice tests. He is a genius and gives thought provoking lectures. I would have loved this class if i wasn't taking it for a grade.
Mulase is the best. He is a genius and is able to convey his ideas clearly. Office hours are a huge help and he tends to make a lot of jokes during lectures. I recommend him for any math course!
Motohico is one of the most brilliant professors I have had so far. He's hilarious and his lectures are fascinating. However, you'll be doing a lot of self teaching when it comes to homework and tests.
Brilliant professor. He is hard to understand a little bit, but office hours are EXTREMELY helpful, he will help you. Tests are brutal, homework is hard, but you will learn.
An absolutely amazing professor and a genius. Really focused on underlying concepts and proofs in lecture (attendance not mandatory). He is a superb lecturer and keeps you engaged as well. Tests were hard, homework was alright. Definitely would recommend again if you really want to learn math.
Brilliant Professor. He was pretty hard, I heard not many people got an A or A+. I ended up with an A. He does many derivations as you would expect from 21 sereis. Very fair and not afraid to put you on blast if your lazy. Recommend him if you love math he made me love it more
Entertaining and engaging. Would take his class again. Homework was a bear, but it's an intro to college calculus, so expect to work hard via Webwork.
Mulase is a very animated teacher who prioritizes theory in tandem with homework. He has the most generous webwork grading of all the 21 series teachers I've had. The class itself has a normalized curved, consistent with Davis' Math department. The midterms were a challenge and the final a doosey, so be sure to study and understand the material.
Professor Mulase is great! He is very approachable, and a super help in office hours. Make sure you make a habit of going every week. His lectures are fun and engaging, and pretty helpful. But also make sure you also read the book. Stay on top of the reading, and study very hard if you want to do well. Make sure you do practice problems regularly.
This dude is straight BEAST MODE. He's incredibly hard BUT he motivates you to want to do your best. Your grade depends on you.
He is a professor that only does proofs and does not care about the practical part at all almost. He certainly is one of the more difficult professors at Davis and I would really recommend that you take this class with another professor unless you want to be in stress the whole quarter.
Mulase is amazing! Hilarious during lectures, very animated. I would strongly recommend him for any math class. The most I've ever learned in a quarter was from Motohico. Go to his office hours. 10/10 perfect professor.
Mulase is awful; his first midterm was ridiculously hard. During lectures, he just rambles on and on about math without fully describing its meanings. He deviates from the textbook and his lies to his students about what is on the tests. He tries to be helpful but he never answers the student's intended question. AVOID HIM LIKE A PLAGUE!
Motohico Mulase is one of the best math professors on the planet! He's so cute and animated. Funny and interesting lectures. Expect to learn the theoretical side of the course subject you are taking with him. He made linear algebra(a somewhat dull subject) extremely interesting. WOULD RECOMMEND MOTOHICO TO ANYONE. 10/10
He will always say to THINK in his class, that is the only way you can pass. Tests are very hard, but he makes math so much more interesting. Take him if you can handle the proofs.
I took Mulase because of all the positive reviews he got on here, but in reality it's so different. He's a literal genius- he does everything in his head so if you haven't taken the material beforehand you'll get lost, every lecture, basically. Lots of self-learning
Mulase is an inspiring mathematician and will definitely make math more interesting. Take him if you love Math. But if Math is just a requirement you want to get out of the way, then it's probably best not to take him. The class requires a lot of effort and work, his lectures can sometimes be hard to follow, and his exams are extremely difficult.
Mulase is great. He's hilarious, and his lectures are pretty much never boring. Incredibly difficult class though - if your only experience with college mathematics is 21ABCD, count on this being a slightly traumatic experience. Curved so ~20% of the class gets an A-range grade; I think the "A-" cutoff ended up being around a C/C- raw score.
He is AWESOME! Hilarious and clear class. and his tests are pretty challenging.
Hard. Like really hard. Curve is a standard bell curve. Webworks is pointless since it won't really boost your grade since everyone will get an A on that. The midterms were like 50% similar to the practice ones which is good since the average on the midterms and finals were 50%-60%. Study the practice exams and you'll pass. P.S This guy is a beast.
Mulase is a really good professor. Very animated and entertaining. The homeworks help to boost your grade, but the exams are really difficult. A good portion of what will be on them is on the practice exams though. Overall, he's a good professor but I wouldn't take him unless you really love math and aren't just filling a requirement.
Mulase is hilarious. I would definiteley take him again. If you put in the effort you can get an A. Just have to read the book and look back at your notes and I think youll be good. Great curve because of such hard tests.
This guy was so difficult for me. His tests were very specific, but just like the practice tests. He does teach you good concepts and important problems but I felt his lectures were not very clear.
Mulase is a very funny teacher and I did like him as a person but he is confusing and does proofs every lecture, pretty much no examples whatsoever. The midterms were difficult though similar to the practice ones he put up. The curve saved me!
I eventually dropped the class due to its difficulty, but I still came to class for a few lectures just to watch him lecture. He's hilarious. The most random teacher you will ever have. He starts writing on the board, then he'll suddenly stop, turn around, and smile. Let's just say you will NOT fall asleep during class.
Professor Mulase is very entertaining and passionate about math. Sometimes his explanations can get a little confusing, but he is always willing to answer questions. He is extremely helpful in office hours. He challenges you to really think, but I would definitely recommend taking him.
Motohico always has a smile on his face. He loves to get to know his students and if you go to office hours, he will try to learn your name. He's also hilarious; always cracking jokes in lecture. Very passionate about mathematics. Lectures are sometimes unclear, but the material was challenging for just about everyone. Take him if he's teaching!
Extremely funny human. Tries to put things in a way regular human beings would understand. Does a lot of geometry... Tests are not easy in the slightest.
His lecture is mostly about proofs, and only a few of example are given. His method of solving problems are hard to understand and impractical. Therefore, going to his lecture only confuses the students further.
3 midterms and a final. both come off homework & lecture examples. The homework really helps compared to the lectures. Highly recommend going to class anyway even though he can confusing sometimes. Generous curve; I received a B+ after getting a 67% in the class. Tries to make class as fun as possible!
2 Midterms and 1 Final. Most people do not do well on them. Homeworks are on webwork, but the problems on there are really difficult, so you'll definitely need to google stuff. The office hours are helpful if you are able to go. Professor covers the difficult problems in homework during the office hours.
Graded by HW, 2 midterms, and a final. He doesn't treat this as a normal MAT21B class! Lectures involve a few simple examples and him talking about random things like not memorizing formulas but putting it into "the neurons in your brain." His words not mine. Don't take this professor if you can't weave through his weirdness that he thinks is funny
He's nice as a person but is not a good teacher, his test are simple but will include things that were not mentioned in lecture. He grades based on 2 midterms and one final plus homework. However, homework is not related to what he teaches in class. His lectures were not always clear because he did the problems in his head without showing steps.
I love Professor Mulase. He is humorous. His lectures tell you the proof and origin of the knowledge as well as the application of the knowldges. These are really something that we need today instead of time-wasting "stupid calculations". You should do some addional practice so that you can get a high score on exams. Exams are really easy!
This class was hard material wise, and a lot of the time, he would ramble a lot and make leaps in his explanations. My TA only confused me further. Best thing to do to study is practice exams and the problems he posts on Canvas (which I started doing too late ;_;). Beware of downcurving!! I had a solid C+ after the final but barely passed.
Mulase is a very intelligent man but not a great teacher. he overcomplicates simple problems at times and covers more then needed (being unnecessary and difficult) I received a 70.6% in his class after the final but he decided to curve the grade down failing me and requiring I take it again. you'll struggle if you haven't taken integral calc before
Some people complained in the MAT21B class since they were also freshman right out of high school just like me. His homeworks are kinda difficult since his TA picks them out, but he calls them "stupid calculations". But he really brings lightheartedness and energy to the lecture. Tests are really easy
Very interesting personality but very likeable. Grades based on midterms and a little on homework. No EC. For us he moved the curve down when the whole class had a higher average than expected, so beware.
The exam is so hard and strict , only few of people would pass for that class. And he won't tell you why you lose so much grade for the final. And the final exam takes 50% of the whole grade. I won't take his class again.
The exam is hard, and the mean is very low. Even the mean of HW is only 50%. Also you could not know why u lost points since he just put the grade on ur exam. He's a terrible teacher and often make mistakes in his lecture. I don't think I will take his class again.
He knows his stuff & the course I had him for wasn't easy at all. With that being said exams were difficult but he tells you what to expect making it easier to study. He doesn't want to fail anyone so he curves the class accordingly. He has a great sense of humor & is helpful in OH. He has an accent; it's not a big issue.
he uses software for his homework that is difficult to input answers into and often gives you a wrong answer because of it. I got the right answer on one but the software told me I was wrong, so I looked it up after I could no longer earn credit and multiple sources had my answer. I emailed him and he said he wouldn't take it because I googled.
Always takes time to answer questions. Patient and never makes you feel stupid. His lectures focus on proofs, conceptual. He spends almost no time teaching how to do homework problems or giving examples. Class gets way more difficult about halfway through the quarter. Lectures move very quickly. I took Calc in high school and still struggled.
The number of the homework is not so large, but weekly assignments need lots of time. This year we don't have exam so the homework become more difficult and give little time to try. It's kind of not like the homwork, but try to let part of the student don't get full credit. btw little bit accent
The homework isnt too bad, but the Weekly Assignments he gives rarely are related to what were learning/unnecessarily confusing. I struggled with those even going to the entirety of office hours and asking the TA for advice. Despite this, hes a really fun teacher and very caring.
Online class Fall 2020 had no exams. Skipped every single lecture since the first day since Prof Mulase is too smart: his lectures are way too complicated and hard to understand. He tries his best to be helpful, but honestly he just takes calculus to a level it does not need to be taken to for a 21A course. I admire him, but this class was rough.
SO CONFUSING. His lectures were proof-based and very difficult to follow. No tests, all homework. Homework that was given was relatively easy but the Weekly Assignments were unnecessarily difficult, related in no way to the lectures, and took forever. Very difficult grader and responded very rudely when asked about grades.
Do not take MAT 021A with him. His lectures were awful; Very hard to follow and rarely related to what was asked in the homework and weekly assignments. The homework was doable, but the weekly assignments were super super super difficult and related in no way to the lectures. Just don't recommend him at all and was rude towards the end of the class
As a student take professor mulase's class in 2020 fall, we don't even have any of the tests, the only hard homework that need to be focus is just the weekly assignment. Professor mulase will explain a lot about the homework in his office hour, he always give us clue to let us elicit the correct answer. You will get easy A if you study well.
Really nice guy. That being said his lectures are very difficult to grasp. All conceptual and filled with proofs. No tests this quarter. Hw is ok. Weekly assignments are unnecessarily difficult. Tried to ask friends and family for help but they didnt understand either. Over complicates simple concepts. Wouldve failed if we had midterms/ finals.
I wouldn't recommend him. Lectures were just proofs, often over-complicated. HW would have concepts not mentioned in class. Weekly Assignments were beyond impossible, with even grad students/tutors not being able to solve them. Near the end, he was very rude about grades, so students were afraid to email him to clarify any mistakes he made
If you wanna learn calc all by yourself, this is the class to take because he will not teach you a thing. Do not recommend it at all. Nice man, bad teacher.
Mulase is sweet, but this class was ridiculously difficult. Your grade is determined by manageable online homework, and time-consuming, taxing weekly assignments that are much more complicated than the lecture material. His class is a great learning experience for those wanting a challenge, but it is also a needlessly difficult class.
He's a nice professor! I found him to be very approachable and friendly, but this class was so difficult--the online homework was very doable, but the weekly assignments were too complicated and time-consuming. This class is proof-heavy, only take it if you're actively looking for a challenge, otherwise, look elsewhere for your MAT21A professor.
Professor Mulase was nice enough to cancel all exams, so grades only depended on the homework. Lectures were prerecorded and posted on Canvas for our convenience. WebWork was straightforward and assigned twice a week. Weekly assignments were challenging, and the Professor occasionally offered guidance. Professor drops lowest WA and WebWork scores.
Dr. Mulase is awesome! Tough and loves proofs, but he is available for office hours. He never makes you feel dumb for asking questions and helps every student who wants to succeed. Be prepared to work for your grade. He is homework heavy but no Exams. Just 2 HW's a week and a weekly assignment that is considered a quiz. He is a treasure!
His lectures are very proof heavy, and you need to have a really good understanding of the concepts in order to finish the homework. He assigned two online homeworks and one weekly assignment (kinda like a take home test) per week, but was nice enough to cancel the midterms and final. Be prepared to visit the Calculus room or go to office hours.
Overall a great teacher. Only two things went into the gradebook - homework & weekly assignments. Homework was fairly easy and due twice a week. Weekly assignments were harder but doable. Shouldn't be too hard if you pay attention to lectures and slides. Prof may seem strict but genuinely wants to help his students out.
Mulase is actually a really sweet professor! Homework is due twice a week and is fairly easy. Weekly assignments are due every Monday and are slightly harder, but if you pay attention to the lectures then it shouldn't be too hard. No quizzes or final. He has a different teaching approach, but overall isn't too hard.
The professor is always smiling. Very nice guy who knows what he is doing. You only have the whole weekend to deal with the weekly assignment, so asking the professor for help is hard. After all, the material is clear and requires abstract thinking.
No exam !!! Webworks are quite difficult, but weekend assignments are interesting. He will live his pre-recorded lectures during lecture time lol.
Very hard to understand, I see no comments talking about this so I thought I should raise the concern. Doesnt speak perfect English with a strong accent. Teaching style makes the class more challenging.
First, of. I want to emphasize that Professor Mulase is really funny and nice. He talks about inspirational math and how beautiful it is. BUT. If you are trying to learn calculus. Do not take this class. It is so hard to grasp what he is talking about because of how he formats lectures. It is proof-heavy. The midterms literally are your grade.
The class was a little difficult. The midterm took a big dump on my forehead and gave me a concussion. The end.
Class is proof-heavy and extremely difficult. Mean score for the first midterm was 50%, which is worth 40% of the overall grade.
Workload is manageable at first but then he starts dumping a lot of work towards the end of the second midterm which makes it feel rushed. Exams are extremely difficult compared to the practice he says will resemble the exam. He seems like a nice person but this class wasn't fun in any way. Weekly assignments are hell to do and he is not helpful.
Worst MAT21A professor in UC Davis. If you need to take MAT21A and you are NOT in Math Major, then avoid taking his class. Normal professors will only teach you how to solve questions, but this professor asks you to understand how to prove, which makes homework, midterms, and finals extremely hard.
Does not go by any of the other curriculum other MAT21A teachers use. Has a very different style of teaching, most students do not understand. If you want any chance of understanding his lectures you have to watch his pre-recorded videos which takes up a lot of time. If you want to hate math take this class.
His rating is bloated because he cancelled an exam during the summer. Do NOT take him if you want to learn anything. His lectures are incomprehensible, and irrelevant to his exams which are on material not covered (The majority of your grade is the exam btw). I have taken calc before and he made me despise mathematics. Just horrible. Don't take him
He is extremely knowledgeable about math but explains everything in proofs and very complicatedly. We were never given examples during lectures and homework was often so hard that TA's and math tutors didn't know how to do them. He does large curves on tests but only because test grades average in 50's or below.
Before I begin let me make it clear that it is obviosu that Prof. Mulase is a great mathematician who knows his stuff and is very knowledgable. He is very down to earth and hillarious. However, he is NOT a good teacher, nor even a decent one. The most difficult class filled with proofs and makes the course unnecessarily difficult. but good guy
Worst math class Ive taken in my entirety of education. Lectures are barely audible with him making simple topics into more complicated versions, for no reason. For an introductory calculus course this class goes way too in depth. If this is your only option I would recommend waiting until next quarter to take this with a different professor.
yikes this class was rough, but if you like proofs, deeply understanding math, and just math in general to a crazy extent, this may be the class for you! If not, spare yourself the pain. To understand the lectures, watch the time consuming lecture notes before. The curve is the only thing saving me. Bunch of random material at the end? Big regret.
I don't have an issue teaching myself the material, but this class was challenging as someone who had no exposure to calc before. Homework is mostly stuff that won't be on the midterms. Lectures aren't really related to the homework. If you're good at proofs/have a solid understanding of calc, then this is a good class for you.
His lectures are entirely theory and he never explains how to solve problems. He also doesn't follow a textbook so there's no way to understand aside from googling and TAs. The class is 40% midterms, 40% final, 10% very long online hw, and 10% very hard weekly assignments. Don't take unless you've done calculus before.
This man only explains proofs and never actually goes over practice problems in class. No wonder the class averages for the Midterms are 40%.
If you *love* math, I would highly recommend him. He's extremely intelligent and knows exactly what he's talking about. If you just want to get through math and have a good, basic understanding of calculus, avoid him. Lectures are scattered and convoluted (online + in person material) and his teaching style is a mess. Office hours are very helpful.
Teacher is a nice man, and he is lively in class. Also, at the beginning of the quarter, I got COVID and he is friendly caring my situation. However the course is very difficult. The average score of the final is only 50%. But luckily, teacher curved the score. So the result is not bad for me.
He is literally the worst professor in at Davis. This lectures and lecture slides are just proofs and never actually shows us how to use the methods he somewhat explains in the slides. He expects us to do good when there are NO EXAMPLE PROBLEMS IN A MATH CLASS. This man doesn't deserve to be a professor and I know of lots of people that failed.
Professor Mulase is a mathematical genius but a horrible teacher. I respect him in every way: he's kind, funny, and energetic but not a good professor. I am good at calc but had to work to pass this class. There are 4 problem sets due a week, one of which takes hours on top of being expected to read lecture notes, watch videos, etc. Would not rec.
Honestly compared to the other calc profs here, he's a pretty solid choice. Sure some of his homework questions are hard but if you somewhat attend his office hours and his extra reviews you have a pretty good chance of getting an A as he gives a lot of similar problems as on the midterm and final. It also helps that his curve for an A was 65%+
professor straight up made no sense. I do agree his class was lively. test, weekly assignments were rough.
It took me a while to understand his lectures. He gives recorded and in-person lectures. This is a hard class for sure, but he is very lively and enthusiastic about his teaching. Gives huge curves ( helped me pass the class). His tests are hard unless you attend all discussions and office hours. He knows a lot of math but not a lot about teaching.
Bad lecturer, hard tests, hard hw
Probably the best faculty I have ever had at Davis. Made math fun with his unique sense of humor. The only gripe I have about this class is that it was graded on just two midterms and a final with exactly one homework assignment for extra credit. He made it VERY clear beforehand what was gonna be covered on the exam. I genuinely enjoyed this class.
Mulase's lectures are relatively easy to understand, and he loves to make jokes. It's the topic that's difficult, not his teaching. He works hard to read the room for understanding. His tests are graded fair and the questions minimize the amount of computations you need to do where you might lose points accidentally. You either know it or you don't
Final was a lot harder than the midterms, but the midterms were very straightforward. Lectures were kinda rushed, and he spends a lot of time on proofs than concrete examples. Still, if you read the textbook a bit it's not too bad. Overall, he's a funny/quirky guy who generally made it clear what was going to be on the tests. Curve at the end.
Teaches off of theorems and proofs and does pretty much no examples during lecture. He suggests optional hw problems to do in the book to study but exam questions are very different and sometimes much more conceptual than the hw problems. Went into every exam feeling prepared yet my grades did not reflect that because of how "theorem" they were.
He is a good lecturer but the content of his lectures are not that helpful. Most of the lectures consisted of proofs and theorems which is good to know but there were little to no examples done. I recommend reading and doing some textbook problems and his online lecture notes and just skipping his lectures.
class was overwhelming at first, but when I stepped back, linear algebra was mostly plug and chug. Read the textbook material before class, do your best to follow along in lecture, and do the practice problems at the end of the textbook section, and you'll be golden. Class is actually easy, & the exams are the same as the problems in the textbook.
Super bad professor along with bad TA's. Left for a one week vacation the week before midterms and doesn't provide office hours and just yaps the whole lecture. My TA was an Indian person that did absolutely nothing until you ask him to do something; like a 3 year old kid.
Never take this professor. He seems so jolly at 8am, but it's just a whole yap session. Going to lectures is a waste of time. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Lectures are incredibly boring and he uses only theorems to teach math. So imagine just words and paragraphs on tests. I've been to the tutoring center multiple times for help on hw/practice midterms and multiple TAs tell me that people from his class come in and don't know how to help because they don't know how to solve it.
Only teaches theorems and lectures are all proof's so everything is more confusing than it should be. Midterms included paragraphs of fill in the blank with pretty bad wording. Although attendance isn't mandatory as he tells you everything is posted online he does put stuff on midterms that are only reviewed in person sooo.
This professor makes calculus confusing and I already knew integral calc coming in. He says attendance isn't mandatory and then has lecture-only formulas that he puts on the midterm and is petty about telling them to students outside of class. The wording is confusing and even if you went to lecture you still might not get the problem. DO NOT take.
Midterms differ a lot from the samples and are more difficult. The midterms include many text-based questions which are confusing and never appeared in homework or the sample midterms
take this class, he is a nice person, and his midterms are super easy, everyone can get an A. Everything I said is completely opposite. Thank you. Please run :)
NO. on the 2nd midterm, more than 50% of the test was a fill in the blank textbook definition, where's the math? the way he teaches is confusing and i feel that he overcomplicates everything. & you cannot miss class because the online recordings are all proofs + the stuff on the midterm is things he'll slightly mention in class! TA kenton ily tho
The professor may be a nice person, but all exams is confusing. Every exams has a lot of fill-in-the-blanks or conceptual questions. These questions will not appear in the test sample.
He's a difficult case. Prof. Mulase is clearly very intelligent and eager to help, but not the best at conveying information. Lectures are mostly proofs which are interesting, but not what most are looking for. I never study except right before tests and have done fine; passing the class isn't that bad but don't expect an easy A.
this other ratings comically exaggerated this class' difficulty. as long as you come to lecture, pay attention and do the homework yourself you should end up with a high A. people are so used to plug and chug math in high school that when a good prof like mulase teaches it from the bottom up they get scared but the class is really amaing.
DO NOT TAKE math21B with Mulase. First off, his accent is really heavy so starting off the quarter it was really hard to understand his lectures, which are already complex because he is a proof NERD. Each lecture was another flippin proof and the final is all on these dumb proofs bro. Definetly had to go to the calc room to do good. Don't recommend
DO NOT TAKE math21b with Mulase. First off, his accent is really heavy which makes his lectures super hard to understand. As if they arnt already difficult enough because he talks about proof ALL THE TIME. The entire final is on proofs which is super annoying and you definetly need to use calc room and other resources to pass the tests. Dont advise
glad this class is over. it was hard to figure out what to study, Mulase emphasizes theory, not computing lots of practice problems. class was very fast paced in the last 3 weeks but I think the reality of 10 week quarters is that you have to figure out how to study in your own time if you want to succeed
He literally said he didn't want to teach this class, so he stopped posting lecture notes for a while. The lecture was okay, but to understand it, you still need to understand the materials in the textbook. The grading is generous.
This review might be still relevant to other courses but maybe not since he won't teach this course ever again. Concepts are quite difficult to follow with his methods and rarely goes through simpler examples. He sometimes also forgets to assign homework but will follow students' requests for specific problems on the exams. Good enthusiasm though.
He's funny but a horrible professor, don't take any of his courses.
zhong guo ren bu pian zhong guo ren, bie na, sha bi, example example bu jiang, kao shi nan de yi bi, shang ke quan shi li lun, KUAI PAO
I genuinely don't understand how this professor was hired, does not explain concepts well, the textbook used had almost no examples. The entire class was self teaching. I have never seen an entire class so confused on what to study for in preparation for exams. The class did so bad C- curve was set as 50%. You can imagine how bad this was.
Although he is a great person with a lot of energy and a passion for math, his teaching style is extremely difficult to follow and tests are confusing even if you know the math, as they are mostly written proofs. I have always done very well in math, but the homework did not in any way help prepare us for the tests and tests were horribly written.
Honestly it was a tough class even though I alr took BC... his lectures can be quite confusing if you're new to it since it's proof heavy, so TAs are your best bet for the application part. A pleasant and respectable professor though. He based his tests on the examples he did in class so don't skip class (even if he post the vids online)
Only take this dude if youre really comfortable with theory behind mathematical concepts. His lectures never make sense. Very light homework but if you havent leanrt this material before avoid at all costs
Nice guy who's obsessed with sparkling water and chalkboards but the midterms and finals are awful. They consist mostly of paragraphs of proofs with 1-2 pages of computation (20% per midterm and 40% final). Homeworks take a long time to complete several questions WILL require you to Google. dont take this class unless you have no other option
Mulase is very smart and has lots of enthusiasm for math. However, I found his lectures to be pretty disorganized, especially pacing wise as much time is spent on proofs, and the lecture notes aren't too helpful. His tests have very straightforward computational problems and then proof problems which are kinda confusing. He gives hints in class tho
Class is curved so your average student will have a like C+. He was nice but I didn't feel like I learned much from him, rather I relied on what I knew from previous calc courses. The exams are fill in the blank but DON'T LET THAT FOOL YOU they're mostly proofs written in his own terms, with words taken out that you needed to supply from a bank.
Mulase is brilliant and spent a lot of time on proofs. The proofs are helpful, but too much proof will confuse people. The most confusing part is that he uses the Uniform Continuous to prove the Riemann Integral. The homework is hard, too, but the midterms are easy. Just try to practice the released MOC midterms and exams.
Kind of felt like I learned nothing since his lectures are confusing and full of proofs with little to no computations. Same with test. Don't take this class, out of all the stem courses I've taken I have to say this has got to be the worse one. For reference I took 4 total stem classes this quarter getting all A or better except this one
Test consisted of mostly proof with like less than half of it being actual computation. Computation parts were easy as you're only tested on things like integration by parts, solids of revolution, and improper integrals. The proof part is what causes the test mean to sit around 50-60% as u are required to memorize paragraphs of text.
Despite the good grade I have to say this class was awful I barely learned anything and I feel less prepped for 21C. You never really practice the integration techniques he kind of just gives you the proof for it and you're expected to learn it. Some homework's are hard AF so give yourself a couple hours. Or save yourself and avoid this class.
Lectures consisted of proofs too difficult to follow during class that do not teach how to do the math. His lecture notes are the same. Everything must be self studied outside if you want to pass. Graded online homework that he assigns doesn't reflect what is on the exams, as he doesn't make the problems. I would recommend taking another professor.
This class was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. His lectures do not align with what we're tested on and are all on proofs. He just expects us to learn everything ourselves. The homeworks are so difficult and have nothing to do with lecture content. I'd have been better off learning integration myself. Take a different professor.
A lot of these reviews are being dramatic. He uses real life examples to connect the topics to your intuition, but read the lecture notes before class to keep up. Once the intuition clicks, it makes class way easier. Quizlet+ carried me through the homeworks. For practice use: thomas calculus book problems, the homework and lecture note problems.
Exams are hard and curved
I could've skipped so many lectures and received the same grade. Prof barely covered the process of actually integrating. Had to rely on what I learned in high school. Bro made me start off my day wrong too because it was an 8 am :(.
He was pretty cool and funny. His lectures were enjoyable most of the time but the thing that got a lot of people was the way he framed his material and exams. They were nearly all multiple choice and were very theorem heavy
He is really nice and passionate about math, but goes on tangents in lectures & does not explain things well. A very proof heavy class (not typical for Calc B). I took AP Calc AB and was still lost in his lectures. Attendance not mandatory. Slides are hard to follow. Homework can be very difficult. Tests are easier than homework. MEMORIZE PROOFS.
Lectures were very disorganized and he would tell us that he was just making up the lecture as he went. Exams rarely reflected on what we were taught in class. He barely gave any homework so it was hard to know what would be on the exams. He did not treat the class as an introduction to abstract math.
Lectures were very confusing since they were proof-heavy and he didn't really teach how to apply the concepts to a math problem. Lecture notes were good, but homework was very difficult. Tests consisted of fill-in-the-blanks for confusingly worded proofs and about 20-30% of the test was actual math. Very approachable inside and outside of class.
Very sweet and energetic guy but the class is hard. He makes it more difficult to understand since he goes into complicated proofs and stuff. Tests are pretty hard, computations are easy the fill in the blanks make it hard as they are ~60% of the test and often time you're forced to memorize sentences of proofs. Guess zero or pi if you don't know.
Genuinely one of the worst experiences of my life taking this course. He quite literally said that he did not want to teach this class and was forced to by the math department so he did not put much effort it. He stopped posting lecture notes after the third week, lectures were essentially scribbles on the white board. Avoid unless you want to cry!
Tests were VERY difficult. The calculations were all easy, however, majority of his exams were graded on proof. Study the proof or memorize it. They are in his lecture slides. His lectures were confusing and he did not know how to answer some students questions at times.
I'm literally begging you not to take this professor's class. He goes on random tangents in his lectures and makes Calculus way more difficult than it already is. And his obsession with proofs, I swear to God. His priority is proofs rather than making sure his students actually understand the concepts. Avoid if you care about GPA
Proofs the class. Took this guy my freshman year. At one point dude promised us he wouldn't put proofs on the final. Proceeds to put proofs on the final. Thankfully I expected this but still, for an entry calc class the amount of proofs is brutal and impractical to actually learning the material. Worst experience I've had out of my 4 years here.
love math but not good for teaching
The prof loves math and is very energetic, but SHOULD NOT teach a freshman-level class. A majority of the tests are proofs which are a complete curveball because all the HW is computational. He doesn't prep his lectures and wings all of them (which he stated himself). Lecture slides are unhelpful, no practice tests, and he downcurves.
He is so funny and I love him as a person. As a teacher… His tests are split into two parts, a fill-in-the-blank proof that takes up an entire page, and actual math. The test is poorly designed in general, the final is this 3x, and no one does well on the fill-in-the-blank. Great curve though! Had an A at 67%
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! The professor was horrible at teaching basic proof concepts. Very disorganized and would forget how to do problems. Exams were extremely difficult and nothing like HW. HW was graded harshly. Gave a 20% curve at the end of the year because the average on the final was below 50%. Read the txt book if you have to take his class
He doesn't teach off of a textbook, is not good at teaching concepts and his exams are basically all confusing fill in the blank proofs. He also assigned us super hard integrals as homework that even the tutors at the ATC didn't know how to do. My discussion TA mentioned that he TA'd for another 21B class and they were doing way simpler problems.
Extremely unorganized but very intelligent professor. He did not know where to start or end with this class. He started the course providing lecture notes (that were similar, but not the same as lecture) & then 3 weeks in, stopped & told students we had to rely on each other for notes. No one was properly prepared for the final- but massive curve.
