She made a hard course as easy as she could. I would take the course with her again with out a second thgought. Funny... pleasant
This professor really knows her Orgo, but she was in my opinion, not actually teaching the class, mearly reciting the text verbatim during thlectures. Also, on many many occasions she was quite unprepared for the class and consequently the students. She was, I must admit a fun and sometimes humerous person, but not a well seasoned lecturer by far.
she makes the text pertainent to your life. i liked her a lot.
This tries to cover more material than time allows. More than half the class ends up with a failing average but they pass you even if you have no idea what you're doing because they don't want to look bad or they feel sorry for us...
I've had this professor twice and I really like her. Although we cover material at a pretty fast clip in lecture, she bends over backward in discussion and office hours to make sure you understand things. She'll give you as much time as you need. Very accessible and easy to talk to. Nice lady.
Dr. Satyamurti is a wonderful professor and a very nice woman. This class moves fast, which I think is more the doing of the powers that be than this professor. She really works hard and invests a lot of time to make sure you get it. Even if you have never taken chem before: She will get you through, as long as you invest the time. I recomend her.
This class moves fast so you need to keep up. This professor will do what it takes to get you through if you invest the time and effort. She is smart, kind and wants you to learn the material.
A wonderful woman. Funny and loves what she does. REALLY WANTS TO HELP. Bad: reads verbatim from lecture notes, w/o explaining a lot. RUSHES through material, and we are left scratching our heads. A lot of typos and mistakes in the notes (which served as our text for the 1st half of the semester). Needs to come to class as prepared as I do...
She is a really nice woman, and it is obvious she WANTS everyone to understand the material and is doing all she can. The material is hard, and there is a lot covered in a short time. Sometimes when I asked a question she answered it with a bit of a "we've gone over this a million times, are you retarded?" feeling, but she still was helpful.
She made a class I dreaded taking into one of the most interesting (and amusing)classes ever. There definitely was a lot of matierial but if you go to class and attend the discussions where she will take as much time as you need to explain anything you do not understand you will pass. She also offers extra credit and the lab is easy.
nice enough woman...but does not know how to teach.
In my opinion, she is the worst teacher ever to grace the lecture hall. Her lack of clarity is frustrating and left with me with no other choice then to not go to class and study solely from the book. Sometimes I question whether or not she graduated from college, never mind getting her doctorate. If it's possible, take a different teacher.
She is a nice, but her teaching skill is not very good. I can't understand her lecture because of her heavy accent, so I have to study on my own all the time and find tutors for help.
Excellent, very good, helpful. I strongly recommend this professor.
nice lady...tests are too long, tests are hard. she cant explain at all. she helps out as much as she can. her scale is wack. go to her office alot.
Very nice lady, hard to understand at first but you get used to her. Always willing to go the extra mile for those that show an ounce of effort....go to her office for questions!!! Highly recommend this Professor!!
She's not bad. All of her presentations are on her website if you miss a class. She drops the lowest test grade.
Great class
She knows what she is talking about and the slides she presents are helpful, but I found reading the book was the best way to do well. Exams are not too hard, not much homework assigned. Easy-ish grader.
Overall a very nice lady. She knows Chemistry well and if you need help, she is always available. She wants you to do well, and if you put in the necessary work, getting an A is not all that hard. Do well on all exams and you are exempt from the final.
Horrible. She said her tests would be mul choice and then she switched the format. The 1st test is the easiest so do well on that, she has practice tests that help. But it only gets harder and then you are by yourself. Her pwpts are only for her since they're mainly headlines and do not provide any useful info. Avoid like the plague.I did P/F.
Work hard grab a tutor and expand your mind to new ideas and guess what you will get an A in her class all you need is about 2 - 3 hrs of diligent study everyday to get by pretty good
I just love her. Occasionally flighty and lost-in-translation (english 2nd language) but really does know what she's talking about and is always willing to help. The book is helpful: read it, attend class, do the homework and you should be fine. The tests are basic and never tricky, just know the material. As a bonus, she's hilarious.
She is a great teacher. Chemistry is difficult to make interesting sometimes, but she comes to class full of energy and makes us want to learn. Satyamurti jokes around alot, she keeps me awake haha. I love how she posts all the lecture slides, notes, homework, extra problems and review sheets. her tests are fair and she scales everything its sick
When I took her class over a year ago, a lot of us had a hard time with her. She is very very willing to work with students on a one-on-one basis, however, and for that I was thankful. I often felt exasperated in her classes though, because of her disorganization or inconsistency. A very nice person, though.
she helps every student one on one
she's the best
I think the biggest problem with this professor is that she does not seem to approve of or support students who have jobs and responsibilities outside of class. If you fall behind, you're kind of screwed. She is very nice and does try very hard to make sure everyone understands, though.
You need to read the book to do well, don't take her slideshows too seriously as she usually just skips over half of them anyways. Makes herself seem very approachable in class but that's not always the case if you go to her office hrs. Her tests may seem very difficult and unfair, but she scales them a lot in the end. Do the OWLS and extra credit!
She is a great teacher and available to students. She is very clear about what is on the exams, if you can do the homework (and actually do the homework) you will pass with ease. Some one mentioned she doesn't support working students, and that is bs. You need to attend class to do well, if you can't you shouldn't be wasting your $ with school.
Satyamurti is by far the best College Professor I've come across. The material is a lot, but she will take her time to make sure you understand. Many were afraid to approach her, but when you do, you find out she is extremely nice/helpful. Make sure she knows who you are! OWL and Study groups help your grade tremendously. Will take 116 with her
Teaches from powerpoint slides that she clearly didn't make. She doesn't have a grasp on the information and her tests are a perfect example of her inability to put logic sentences together. Do not take her classes unless you love to waste your time and paper.
She's great teacher...very hard. Tests are tough, not always enough time. Expects students to put in the time to do well. Class averages are low, but I don't know how or if there is scaling.
She is a terrific teacher, knows her subject and is a capable and caring lecturer. She has a sense of humor & tries to help everyone to succeed and to grasp the concepts concretely. A lot of homework assigned & has many sample questions to work on so that her tests and exams are not really a surprise if you have been working diligently.
She is very hard. You are on your own for learning..she doesn't make the class easier to comprehend. BUT she tackles 2 chapters per exam which is a fair pace. You must do homework to do well on exams. She gives extra credit. She cares she's just not a good teacher. She can do it, but can't teach it well.
THIS WOMAN IS VERY DIFFICULT 2 UNDERSTAND WITH A STRONG INDIAN ACCENT, SHE TOLD THE CLASS THAT IF THERES A PROBLEM WITH IT THATS TOO BAD. SHE FLIES THROUGH THE SLIDES .SHE TELLS JOKES THAT LAST HER 10 MINS 2 FINISH LAUGHING ABT WEN THE CLASS IS DONE FINDING IT FUNNY. SHE TAKES UP EVERY MINUTE OF CLASS TIME & PERHAPS MORE. POINTS PPL OUT 4 TEXTING
She is kind of a hard teacher. As long as you read the book and pay attention to her lectures you should get an A. All her test questions come from the multiple choice online on her website. She really does want to help you in chemistry. I recommend that you go to the FSG and pay attention in the discussion class.
Can't understand her. She's not very helpful in discussion. She really doesn't care that nobody is keeping up with what she's saying.
Do the homework she assigns online, and also read the chapter. The test questions come from the book, sometimes verbatim. I'm guessing the people complaining didn't do the homework. Seriously. Do all of the homework she assigns for each chapter. I did that, and I averaged damn near a 100 on every test. I had never taken chemistry previous to this.
She's not friendly. Tries really hard to be funny. All she does is read off the slides and doesn't explain as much. I didn't have a strong background in chem so I struggled a lot in this class. Not reccommended!
I too this class this semester and I had no problems understanding the subject or the accent. I in fact loved the class. I am not saying the subject is easy. You have to study very regularly or you will not do well. Overall a good class and I enjoyed it.
The class is huge. You have to stay with the lecture, and got the help every time I asked for it. I had no problem with the accent, very understandable. There is a lot of extra credit and you must do it. I liked the class a lot.
extremely helpful professor. made a class before the lecture for 2 hours the last half of thre smeester to review and go over trouble areas. also keeps the boring subject light with occasional jokes. her negative reviews must be from immature kids not wanting to take this class. strongly reccommended
I loved the class
This professor hates what she does and reads off her slides. You can read her book but it't not enough to pass. If she passed you in 115 she will hold you back in 116. Be She does not scale! I am an all A student normally. I worked so hard in this class for a D+. She is an aweful teacher, try someone else for chem 116. Best advice you will get!
A little confused in lecture in terms of consistency in speaking about subject at hand. If you are brand new to chemistry, it will be harder to follow.
Shes a good teacher, but the class is hard, I didn't do good, but I don't think I should blame her, I wish she was more vocal on what to study for exam, on her study guide say: Exam 2: Study whole chapter 5,6 ect... like that is useful... I ended up studying wrong things and paying attention more to things that weren't on exam.
I only had her for lab, but she was very helpful and clear. She truly does care about her students and wants them to succeed. I only know this because I overheard her talking to a student who was dealing with some personal issues. What she was saying to him was extremely nice. It's good to know some teachers really do look out for their students.
Good teacher, very dedicated. FSG helps alot. Test are directly taking from mult. choice practice on website. OWLS are useful. Shes a sweetheart. Make sure she knows who you are!!
She only reads off the slides in class and does not explain them clearly to the class. She is one of those teachers who will yell at the entire class for doing poorly, but refuses to believe that it could reflect on her teaching. She is unclear about what she will put on the test and does not offer much help in preparing for the exams. Don't do it!
Professor Satyamurti is a wonderful teacher. She has an excellent sense of humor and is a skilled lecturer. However, she really invests in you, if you show her you're dedicated. After getting an F on an exam I asked for her help, and she worked one-on-one with me (in a class of 300) every day until I understood everything! I got an A in the class.
Hardest class I have ever taken my whole life! she just reads from powerpoints, and doesnt rally help. Go to studygroups, you are on your own for this class. Dont slack off whatsoever. Good Luck.
Do not listen to other students, she is a great professor. If you do the practice problems you basically have all the information for the tests! I know, 100+ questions listed for each chapter, not mandatory... But you will see them on the test. It is all I used to study and got an A!
I've had both Satyamurti and Sevian for intro to chem, and even though I prefer Sevian, Dr. Satyamurti is a wonderful teacher. She has a great sense of humor and makes lecture interesting. I never thought I would be able to succeed in a science class after struggling so much in high school until I had her for a teacher.
chem is tough and she doesn't really help much. each class is basically her reading directly off slides and telling some bad jokes. to succeed you need A LOT of extra time to do all the problems she gives you, owl, and fsg. if u have time for all that then go for it its like taking 3 four credit classes in one!
She wasot clear on anything in the class. She starts off with jokes trying to win you over with humor then you start to see that she cannot teach the class whatsoever. She uses slides from about 10 years ago and she does not update any of her information. There is no homework given and your grade is just based on exams. She does not do any reviews
I do not know how you could get anything below an A in this class if you do the assigned work. Professor Satyamurti is funny, approachable, understanding, and makes Chemistry as easy and interesting as anyone possibly can. Dare I say, I even started to enjoy coming to class. DO ALL PRACTICE PROBLEMS and the it will be a breeze.
She is a really good profesor if you print the slides and take notes you understad everything. she has old exams questions post in her web site which are really helpsfull. if you do the practice exams and some homework problems you are done
She's an average professor but very lazy. When she cannot explain something she tells you to look at the ppt slide and see if you understand it. Tests are inconsistent--sometimes really easy sometimes really hard. Her humor can come off a little rude and condescending. It's also slightly hard to understand her but not entirely difficult.
this professor makes chemistry so difficult. First of all, i do not recommend to take this class if you are not good in multiple choice exam. She makes her exams to difficult and not fairly. 80% of the test is multiple choice and 20% solving problems. So, it is not easy to get a good grade in this class. and addition, she has an accent- not good
She is extremely condescending and unapproachable. She makes you feel dumb if you ask a question. She treats the class as if she is teaching middle school. People in this class are mostly science majors, some pre-med yet she treats people like they are stupid. Easy class though, so if you can ignore how annoying she is you can get an easy A.
AMAZING
Interesting and nice teacher, but lacks the ability to teach a large classroom tough material. She has great qualities, but she was not approachable and didn't test on material in the way it was presented in class.
Super boring . She doesn't do a good job teaching the class either because all she does is read off of her slides and scribble all over it. You are better off just reading the book yourself however it's not impossible to pass this class by yourself. I had a 26% 43% and 73% exam grade and with my final i managed to get a b-. TONS of extra credit
She is not horrible she is pretty reasonable. Her accent is a little hard to understand but if you READ THE BOOK, go to her for help and take the practice exams posted on her website, it is an EASY CLASS--but you MUST put in the work to do well.
Every person has different ways of learning material. I for one didn't find this lady very helpful. She was very passionate about Chemistry but wasn't great at teaching it. I was placed in this class due to late registration, and wow I really wanted to shoot myself in the foot for that one! Ultimately its your choice to choose the professor.
She has a website on which she posts practice questions and hw questions and worksheets that you do during discussion session (POGIL Worksheets). The exams are always from the practice, hw or pogil questions however 1: She's not helpful, says she is, but is completely the opposite 2: She pinpoints 3: the practice Qs r around 200-300 for each exam.
Hardest teacher I've had and though grader. Not a lot of possibilities to get extra credit and hard to understand. Get ready to read a lot and spend at least 3 hrs a day on chem.
Regurgitates the info from the book in the form of vague powerpoints that she presents in class. Very thick accent. Incredibly condescending to her students at times because she feels somewhat entitled. Although you can probably get a better grade by just studying on your own, she enforces mandatory iclicker attendance. Avoid her if you can.
She is a good professor who cares about her students. Offers extra credit and drops lowest exam. Definately take chem with her she is the best! Exams are not tough if you study hard. Go to SI and do the owl and go to class and discussion and you will get 17 points just for that.
Satymurti was an amazing prof. I needed chemistry since I am doing pre-med, & after my horrendous experience in high school, I was very nervous about it. Within the first week, I came home & was bragging about what a great teacher she is. She knows how to control her class & how to teach extremely well. I absolutely love her as a person & a teacher
Tough grader, makes you feel dumb, has a heavy accent, she really depends on you to do a lot outside of school. Is very lazy. Goes off on tangents in class. Not easy to talk to. DO NOT take this class with another science class. Prepare to have a lot for your time spent on this class. There is not that much extra credit. Highly not recommended.
Her accent is thick so you'll have to get used it. Your grade for the class relies on 3 tests and the final that is worth 2 tests. Attendance is 5% and discussion is another 5%. Drops the 4th exam grade. She goes on rants and tells stories instead of teaching but she is funny. The class is very time consuming but looking back you can get an A !
She has a very thick accent that is very hard to understand. She's not helpful or good at explaining things, probably because most of the time you can't understand what she is saying. You can't count on what is tough in class, if you don't read the book you WILL fail the course. The tests are very hard and make you have second thoughts.
I took 115 w her & got an A following her advice. I read the textbook, did the POGIL, HW & extra problems. To learn you have to do it on yourself. This semester has been a Failure with tests with 14 (5.5point)MC questions & open responses. I studied harder than last semester, but have yet to get past an 80. Extremely frustrated with this class.
She's terrible.
Very frustrating class. You could do the discussion assignments, problems from the book, read class notes etc, and her tests will always have a couple of "trick questions". Since the test are usually 15 MC questions, you aren't given a chance to show everything that you know, but rather what she wants you to know. Hard to get a grade over 80-85.
If your going to take chem 1 or 2 at umass, take it with mridula. Her class IS EASY if you go to class and pay attention. All you have to do is the practice problems posted on the class website and understand them. Those are the questions on the 15MC and 2 open response exams. Don't bother to understand pogil. They aren't helpful for her exams !
She's a terrible teacher. I learned more in one lab than I did in an entire week in her class.
Hard to understand, doesn't explain well
I have hard time understanding her and the exams are unfair. I would look for another prof. to take general chemistry courses.
Although some of the tangents that Mridula will spin off on are really funny, most of them are repetitive, pedantic, and unhelpful. She will regularly specify that a topic will not be on an exam and to not focus on it, and WHOOP! there it will be. She also regularly makes MAJOUR grading errors, so be sure to go over your exams very carefully.
Absolutely hate her class. She is rude, says mean things, goes off into rants that doesn't make sense. Her accent makes things harder for me to understand. Her tests doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense either, like some of the things she says will be on the test aren't there and some things that she said weren't going on the exam are there.
She often goes on tangents or acts a bit rude, especially if she doesnt like you. Just dont stick out and do what she says. Dress conservatively and turn your phone off. Goggles and gloves at all times. As a lab instructor she was good. I wouldnt take a class with her though since I didnt learn that much in lab. Could be more tactful overall.
She reads directly off the slides and occasionally will do some example problems. If attendance hadn't been mandatory I wouldn't of gone and I would of still done well. To pass her exams you need to make sure you can do her 100 multiple choice example problems for each chapter. She takes exam questions from those. She drops the lowest exam.
Basically reads off slide show which isn't very helpful to begin with. Learned everything from the textbook, not from her. She can rude/sarcastic. In discussion she will help you, but only after pointing out that you should already know the answer to whatever your question is. READ the textbook! Labs are not hard IF you are keeping up with reading.
Make sure you have the textbook and that you go over things you don't understand during lecture. She isn't a bad teacher she just wants her students to actually put a little effort. She likes charming students so try to get to know her.
She has a thick accent. She just reads off of slides in the lecture. Her tests can be easy if you know how to study. She gives a good amount of extra credit. Doesn't want you to fail. SI is extremely helpful for studying and going over topics again. No homework, the only grades are test & attendance. She does drop one test.
Chem is hard. This is a hard course. She could be a little more helpful, and I feel like the tests were too hard. A lot of opportunities to get extra credit though. If you do the online homework (it's a pain in the butt) you get +3 to your final. If you go to all the extra sessions thats another +5. Then she scales everything 5 points. Drops a test
I had to take this class for my degree audit. Chem 117 (lab) portion was a breeze, lecture not so much. In the lecture hall setting, she speaks very quickly and flies through the material on her slide show. Her accent is a bit strong so it'll take some getting used to to understand her. in discussion, she was a HUGE help, she's definitely better.
Very difficult class. She is awsome if you put in 100% effort. Chemistry is hard, and she teaches to a high level. Studying and time investment is a must. There is a high degree of difficulty in her course, but she is willing to help. Having a good understanding of algebra/pre-calc will help you. I earned an A- it required 20+ hours a week...
Mridula is honestly one of my favorite professors at UMB. Either attend class or READ textbook and UNDERSTAND the Concepts. Chem115-4 tests and drops one, chem116, 3 tests and drops none, so attempt to do well on all. DEFINITELY make use of all the extra credit options available and practice questions online. DO OWL!!!and start early.
Satyamurti is a good professor. The key is to do all of the questions in the textbook, and you'll be fine. Don't just rely on lecture slides--most of your success in the class is based on the work that you put into it outside of class. She really does want the students to learn.
she is a great chem116 professor. She explains everything very well, and she has an excellent knowledge of the material. I took the class in the summer and I have learnt so much from her class and would definitely take her if she is teaching biochemistry.
Mridula is a great professor! She goes through her slide shows quickly, and teaches to a high level but she certainly knows what she is talking about. Very accessible in her office and around campus. Loves to answer questions in class, and wants everyone to feel comfortable in class and making sure they are learning the material. 4 tests, drops 1.
I love Dr. Satyamurti! For CHEM 115, there are 4 tests and she drops 1. She loves to tell stories about her life that often tend to be hilarious -- she is a great lecturer and definitely knows what she is talking about. Clearly passionate about chemistry and is always willing to help. Answers all questions happily. Do your work and put effort in!
You will teach yourself 90% of this class. She goes through powerpoint slides but tends to ramble on so you only go through a few slides a day. No homework is assigned but you need to read the chapters, do the POGILs, go to extra help, and do the practice exam questions just to get a C+/B- on a test. Her tests tend to have things she didn't teach.
She a great teacher. Make sure you attend SI if you want to pass. Do lots of practice problems.
OK, she could improve in a few ways. Tends to talk at us more than teach, and I wish she spent more time in class doing the problems with multiple examples. I had a leg up having taken a chem for health professions the previous semester but I essentially taught myself. Plenty of extra credit opportunity and the grading scale is awesome.
Overall, Dr. Satyamurti was a pretty good professor. She does her best to explain the topics and is always open to answering questions. However, she tends to go off on tangents and isn't afraid to call out students during lecture. As long as you pay attention, do the homework, ask questions, and study, you will pass.
she is very bossy and tends to get annoyed if you ask too many questions or do not understand a concept. She was my lab instructor and I just went to the TA for all my questions and tried to avoid her because she makes all the students very nervous.
She was good -- she tends to speed through lectures and not give much detail, but do the book problems and multiple choice on her website and you will be good for the exams. She is hilarious. Go to extra instruction, I go to Ryan and got an A, he is good. Also have attended sessions from Chris, he is good too.
She may not be the best chem professor, but she is the best chem professor at Umass. He are my tips to do well in class. 1) Homework is optional so DO IT 2) Go to class because attendance counts and throws in some extra credit problems 3) The most important, she has practice problems that are VERY similar to her exams. Do all these you will be fine
She's hard, but fair. She tells you exactly what is going to be on the test and what you're given. Go to her supplemental instruction sessions and make sure you understand what you're doing that will usually be all you need to pass with flying colors. She is intimidating and has a strong personality but always consult the book before going to her.
Mridula is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. She explains the material in a way that is conducive to all learning styles. She's brilliant, readily answers questionsgenuinely wants you to conceptualize fundamentals of chemistry. Moreover, she is incredibly kind, understanding, respectful, animated, accessible. Her story is amazing.
She has a really strong accent so it's very difficult to understand her at times. She knows what she is talking about but I felt as if her lectures were a bit unorganized. Go to the SI sessions because those are very helpful.
Chemistry is a tough subject, but she really wants you to succeed. ATTEND SI SESSIONS, they are EXTREMELY helpful (highly recommend Chris! savior of my chem grade tbh). Tests are 95% multiple choice and the final is all multiple choice. Chemistry has always been very hard for me, but I find this class very manageable. She's also hilarious.
Tests are hard. Make sure to read the book and do all the practice questions in the book. Iclicker attendence, but you dont really need to go to class because she just reads of the slides , which she provides to you. wastes time in class by telling a lot of stories, complains about her students. Again, she just reads of the slides. boring.
Aside from her heavy accent that I wont consider since that is something that cannot be controlled, her overall lecture is just awful. Despite the fact that there are so many students who end up failing the course, she doesn't care. Her lecture style is reading off the slides and occasional pop quizzes. Exams are pretty much your grade so good luck
Shes a nice person but a poor professor. She spends a third of lecture storytelling and stating incorrect facts from other disciplines. She speeds through slides without detailed explanation and is annoyed when asked questions. Worst professor Ive had. Tests are not very difficult but you have to read and find supplemental instruction to do well.
Scales her grading and gives extra credit if you attend SI and do Owl.
Ive learned more about her than I have chemistry and thats no exaggeration. She spent our whole summer course chatting about her life. If youre ready to teach yourself, then go for it. 2 exams 20% each and the final is 50%...
Vague on what we'll be tested on and study guides didnt exist for her
I took chem 115 with Satyamurti over the summer a condensed session of a semesters worth of info squished into 6 weeks. She spent 70% of the lecture time talking about non-chemistry related topics and the rest zooming through slides. She was NOT available outside of class or by email, and the last two weeks (out of the 6) she was on vacation.
Took this as a summer course: she's not the best at explaining things, but if you are paying attention, you'll definitely get the very basics of what she wants you to understand. The amount of work she expects out of you is a bit higher than what I would consider to be realistic for students who may be juggling a job or other things out of class.
These two classes are hard if you have other things in life going on. She stressed in the beginning of the semester that chem is a full time job. She also says its "not like bio where its cookie cutter, its all about application and development." get ready to work your butt off.
If you don't go to SI sessions, you probably won't pass. She teaches for sure but its rushed most of the time. She tells you to ask questions and when you do she makes you regret it, Especially if you are a slow learner. Tests are every three weeks and if you have only 50 mins of class GOODLUCK!!! :(
Read your textbook. Do the practice problems. Show up to class. Ask questions. Sit in the front. Fast-paced. Do not study off of the lectures they are mostly reviewing what you have read. Tests are every three weeks. Study hard. Good luck and may the odds be in your favor.
She does her best in teaching a 400 person auditorium. This is a more study on your own type class and going to SI can really help in understanding the subject. She teaches you the premise but you then need to go home reread the slides and do some practice from the website. If you enjoy big classes this class is for you.
shes just a kind hearted professor, you can tell. If you already have a strong foundation of chemistry, you can pass by teaching yourself and practicing outside of class while also attending SI sessions. If you don't I wouldn't recommend taking this course with her.
You need to teach yourself in this course, she goes through the slides very quickly. She has practice tests online which are nearly the same as the ones in class. An 85% is an A- and a B- is a 75% in her class, but you do need to work for your grade. She gives tons of extra credit just for showing up to class and if you do OWL problems online.
If you get behind in the class you're failing, period. Stay on top of your work and start OWL at the BEGINING of the semester- just do a couple questions a day. Also, go to SI and the discussions because they add up to a whole letter grade in extra credit at the end of semester.
Dr. Satyamurti is the professor that wants to see you work for your grade. She's always there to help but she wants you to put in 100% every lecture. Do not cheat. Don't get caught speaking in class and DONT get caught sleeping. She gives a ton of extra credit. Looking back I wish I had done them. Tbh what you put into this class is what u get out.
Ok so boom here's the tea. you have 4 tests but she drops the lowest score at the end. the final is all multiple choice but some of them require more than one step since the class is also math heavy. DO OWL AS U GO ALONG (that's the only way I passed). study as you learn the material so u dont have to cram (the book is the key). Good luck charlie.
Chem 115 is a general review of high school chemistry so if you did fairly well on your courses then, you'll be fine in this class. Going to lecture is necessary to do well in the class, as she goes over important practice problems and concepts that may be difficult to understand in the text. Overall, a decent class
She is the GOATTTTT bruh bruh. Shorty will make u wanna come to class everyday. Like wow i never expected to like chemistry so much like i love studying for tests till 2 am nd still failing. DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON having my edges snatched by every test. At the end of the day i passed but sadly i am now bald.
Best professor at UMB
my personal experience: she goes through materials pretty hastily. doesnt really take her time to elaborate. always defer questions to the textbook and kept it moving. ultimately, you must have read textbook, work on owl, read slides, and attend SI session to pass. lots of studying on your own too. manage your time accordingly for this class.
Her lectures are very useless just reads off the slides and goes very fast. Tries to tell jokes but they aren't funny at all. Your grade is 90% tests , 5% discussion attendance and 5% lecture attendance. In this class u basically have to teach yourself she is no help what so ever. Just read the textbook, go to SI session and you should be okay.
Great
No drop tests in chem 2. You NEED to teach yourself and read the slides before you attend class or else youll be so confused. Shes not the best chem teacher. This class is SO stressful, so go to all SI sessions and do all OWL problems for +6 pts on your overall grade! So if you have an overall average of 80 in the class youll now have an 86.
Took her my freshman Year. Ended up dripping the class. About 4 test in her class , she drops the lowest grade. The lab was supper easy , didnt need her class to understand it. She has a accent and its hard to understand at times. The lecture hall she teaches in is super dull and boring , makes you want to fall asleep.
Test Heavy, need lots of practice on the homework to ace the course. About 85-90% or the exams are multiple choices.
She's the worst professor I've ever seen. Think about the fact you pay hundreds to get someone read off a book incompletely for you. Always say "I love questions" but become mad if someone asks as she think that person didn't read the textbook on his own. Keep repeating nonsense things in lectures and end up behind when test is about to come.
she is simply the worst. i have never met a professor that is this bad. im honestly not sure how she still manages to keep her job after the number of students that have failed/withdraw. 1. give credit to the textbook because that is what you are learning from not her. 2. if she can become a professor, you can become anything
VERY tough professor, but chemistry is NOT easy. If you are the type of person that doesn't like to read or likes to skip class, you might as well find another professor. I personally like this professor but her class isn't for everyone. My suggestion, READ the textbook and go to the SI sessions as well as start the OWL problems early.
Worst CHEM professor ever! Her accent is heavy and sometimes its hard to understand and her lectures arent that useful honestly. Labs are easy and dont need her to understand. The tests are hard in my opinion, but you have to work for it. Extremely stressful. Goes by the slides too quick without explaining clearly.
1) Scan text.2)Watch "organic chemistry tutor" on youtube for tough topics while noting with pen and paper.3)read text slowly (4hr per chapter). 4)Do related owl hw.5) Answer questions from online practice problems set.6) During daily student scolding use the time to memorize tables. 7)If she repeats herself it will be on exam. Work extra hard.
she's an okay professor, but she expects too much from you. She speeds through lectures and expects you to be reading the book like a Bible. she is rude to students sometimes and has no filter. Won't recommend her UNLESS you enjoy self-teaching.
The worst professor Ive ever had. Gets angry when kids dont understand a topic, does not explain things well. Do not take her as a chem professor, choose the other one. Basically self taught, you have to teach yourself. If you take her, make sure you read the book, do practice problems, and do OWL.
Professor Satyamurti gives plenty of extra credit. However, the class is one where you have to put a lot of work in to get an A, and misunderstanding one concept can punish you for the rest of the semester.
The tests were a bit hard, and there was WAY too much OWL. It was near impossible to get all of it done.
Only cares about her standings with the school, half my class dropped out by the end of the semester, and the ones who stayed only half passed. I would not recommend.
I don't think Prof. Satyamurti deserves the bad rep she gets, she's not, like, the worst teacher ever. Big grandma energy. Read the book, do some OWL, and do the practice questions on her website and you should be fine. Also, extra credit is built into the class.
1. Read the textbook (you can download it online for free) 2. Make a summary sheet of key concepts 3. Do the practice problems listed on her website - they show up on exams 4. Go to SI & do as much OWL as possible. It adds 6+ to your final grade, and an 85 is an A- If you can commit to the work then you will be fine. This is a weed-out course.
I took chem 115 and 116 with Professor Satyamurti, and I can definitely say, most of the learning will happen outside of the classroom. Make sure to read the textbook, do owl early, and go over the practice problems on her website as they tend to appear on her exams. Attend SI and Owl for 6 pts added to final grade. Chem 116 is easier than chem 115
This is the worst, most rude professor i've ever taken. She does not care about you, she'll call you out just to embarrass you in front of the class, disables the chat, laughs at your questions, etc. Your grade depends solely on tests. No study guides, no practice, either you learn it in class or you don't. Extremely fast, expects too much.
I like this professor and the way she explains everything during the class. She makes everything easy to you and when the tests come up, you won't have difficulties during studying or preparing for the test. She communicates so clearly with the students and she is funny too or at least she tries to make her classes exciting. I respect her as a prof
The instructor failed to support the needs of her students. Not only did the lecture content fail to coincide with the exams, but she is almost impossible to reach. One one certain instance, I asked her to post the lecture videos and she told me that I "should not be studying from her lecture, but rather the textbook".
Its chemistry so it is a little hard and homework isn't that bad, but she doesn't accommodate at all during the pandemic. We use respondus lockdown for exams and it doesn't let you go back to question once you answer it which is so unfair. Her lectures really aren't that good. Don't take this class online. She treats it like everything is normal.
Not the worst professor I've ever had, but nowhere near the best. It feels like she is ALL over the place. Nothing is consistent or organized. Doesn't provide feedback on open response questions. WILL call you out in the middle of class. Doesn't respond to emails 99% of the time.
If I could rate her a 0 I would. Do not take this class. She assumes that you know the material even though high school chemistry is not a requirement. She was not considerate at all about peoples situations regarding COVID. She is very confusing about the homework assignments so you never know when anything is due.
I did the online semester. There is soo much work. You pretty much have to learn on your own. You will definitely fail if you dont read the book. There are online mastering chemistry assignments that arent given dates in the syllabus so you have to check on your own. Late work is not accepted. Sometimes shell say if theres an online assignment.
She is terrible. She will constantly go on different topics that don't relate to the class at all. I'm in the class right now and its only been 20 minutes and she's gone in depth about grandparents and not trusting politics. This is a chemistry course.
She is the worst college professor ever. The syllabus is never updated, so you have to manually keep checking the mastering assignments, which she will give whenever she feels like. She takes up so much time in class talking about anything and everything other than chemistry. The exams are done through lockdown browser and it is so stupid.
I have been at UMB for 4 years, and by far this is the worst professor I have ever taken. If you want to succeed in her class, read the book, do all the mastering assignments, attend SI and discussion, and study your butt off before a test. She also does not check her email, so if there is a good luck issue in contact with her. Do not take it!!!
This class is tough, but fair. Attend lectures, do the homework, and attend SI then you should have no problem with it. The supplemental instruction (SI) sessions are extremely helpful for understanding the material and for preparing for tests. Professor Satyamurti also gives a generous amount of extra credit which helps boost your final grade.
I took Prof. Satyamurti's Chem 115 and 116 courses, and she is a very fair grader. Lets you drop the lowest exam grade for 115 gives around 8-9% extra credit for 115 and 116. SI sessions are super helpful and reading the textbook is a must to get an A. Never gives questions that aren't from the book or her site and always answered my emails on time
She is the rudest professor I've ever had. Save your time and DON'T take this course. She does not have any respect for her students. I've never seen such a arrogant and narcistic professor in my life. You basically have to teach yourself everything.
Please chose another professor if possible. Basically self taught. Her lecture's go off topic most of the time. She embarrasses her students about their questions or confusion & is extremely defensive and dismissive when approached. Good luck trying to reach her through email. Very unclear syllabus and will post homework 2 days before it's due.
Terrible would blame students before her teaching style even if the whole class fails
calls you out for yawning, cant understand her, goes off topic, you are better off studying on your own.
I have watched my lecture of over 200 people drop to less than 50 within the past 3 months. She isn't a bad person but is quite defensive when it comes to her teaching style. Basically when the whole failed, she blamed it on the students. During lectures she will often go off topic. Calls you out for random things like typing too much. Don't take.
This is the worst and most incompetent professors I've had as of yet. My class of over 200 students has dropped immensely and those that are left are taking the class pass/fail. Our exam averages are incredibly low, and she refuses to take responsibility for her rushed and inadequate teaching style; ordering us to "study harder". DO NOT TAKE THIS
If you have an oppurtunity to take any other professor in this subject do it . Thiss is by far the Worst professor i have ever taken in my entire life, spends half the class either telling stories or just destroying the class for having a bad test grade. Class is basically self taught on pearson. Good luck.
She is a hard grader, makes you work for your grade. Lectures were hard to understand at times. Attendance was taken via iClicker and locked after 10 mins. Would call out people who were late in class, who would chat, or not pay attention. Does try to prepare you for other chem courses like Orgo. Wouldnt take her again at all.
Exams are 70% your grade in this class, but with all of her practice problems and resources, she was one of the best professors I have had this semester. She reads off of the slides for the most part but you can tell she really cares. She does ramble on a but too much about her personal life though because she thinks it makes the class interesting.
Professor Satyamurti is a good professor sometimes, however, chem1115 is heavily dependant on exam grades (70%) so please beware. The out of 4 exams, the highest exam average was 62.2%, and the lowest a 51.9%. You need to eat the textbook, breathe it, listen to it while you sleep, and do 100+ question practice exams to get an appropriate grade.
WARNING DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! Trust me on this one bro, I use to love science and majored in it for umb BUTT after taking her class I LOST ALL INTEREST & MOTIVATION. To many assignments you WILL be stressed out and the exams are horrible they dont even match with what she teaches during the lecture. She is so disrespectful to students too BEWARE
I took Chem 115 with Prof Satyamurti last semester and am taking 116 this semester. Honestly I liked it. It was my toughest class, but I asked questions and came to office hours when I didn't understand something and she and her TAs were really helpful. 115 is a lot of memorizing and applying rules so if you're good at that, it won't be so bad.
NEVER AGAIN! I took CHEM 115 with her. She is a narcissist who has no respect for her students. She said that if you could not understanding what she teaches, you might as well drop out of the major. She would discourage you constantly and force you to participate. If you did not answer right, she would embarras you.
Taking this class was the WORST decision ever. This professor is rude and does not know how to teach whatsoever. Her exams are worth 70% of your grade and are really hard. She will put things on there she has never taught. If you fail one exam, your grade is down the drain. Do not take this class with this professor. You will have instant regret.
Don't walk run away from this Professor. She is unorganized and rants for half the lecture. She doesn't scale and half of her class failed. She is better suited in management not teaching. I recommend reviewing the content-based questions and going to the S.I. groups for the math-based questions, I still had to withdraw after doing this.
This Professor is a terrible time don't even bother with her class. It's all dependent on her tests which are nothing like what she teaches. She barely teaches at all in lectures and is generally confusing and sometimes disrespectful to students. She will talk down to you if you don't understand the content. Do not take.
I took her class on my freshman year, her class is not hard but needs so much time, be ready to have so much work for her class, she is kind of intimidating, attendance are mandatory and she follows the book very much so having the book will benefit you. If you do the discussion class questuons, honeworks and practice exams you will get A.
I don't personally recommend Professor Satyamurti, but this is how I got an A: - GO TO SI SESSIONS (this is where you'll learn everything) - STUDY MASTERING CHEMISTRY FOR TESTS (Almost all of her questions on the test questions are on Mastering) - Study practice problems (on Blackboard - also on tests) - Go to class - Read the Textbook
If you can memorize well, I recommend this class for you. I had memorised the three exams we had already taken and some of the homework problems and my 70 turned into an 85 after taking the final. Although the exams are worth 70% of your grade, so watch out. Does offer extra credit only an extra 5% tho and you have to attend all of the SI sessions.
ugh please don't take her class. the lectures are boring.she's very rude and will embarrass you in front of everyone. she also gets distracted and talks about anything but chemistry and it's annoying. the TA isn't very helpful either. go to the SI sessions because they help and it gives you extra credit.the exams are worth 70% of your final grade.
I am confused by the highly negative reviews! I thought this class to be extremely fair and reflective of the time put into learning Chemistry. The tests are not difficult if one goes to lecture, does the homework, and truly studies until understanding! She is fiery and is slightly disrespectful in terms of social cues, but a fair professor!
I took both chem 115 and 116 with Professor Satyamurti. Needless to say, these classes are survival of the fittest. If you're not willing to put in hours a week into these classes, you won't pass. Even with putting hours in, there's still no guarantee to pass. She scares the students and is very arrogant.
The professor is fair but you have to put in the effort. SI sessions are helpful.
please if you can avoid taking her class try too she the worse teacher I ever had. she made me want to trop out, she not understanding at all, she gives useless quizzes plus she makes you buy the homework. she even made us buy the book just for her to never use it in class. she takes more about her personal life then she does chemistry.
She is a rude entitled professor that provides no effort with PowerPoint. Then she will humiliate you in a 150 person lecture hall for anything she feels is acceptable to do so. I don't recommend this lady due to her poor teaching, horrible entitlement, and laziness. You would be better off teaching yourself from the chapters, she is just terrible
In all honesty she is not that awful of a professor. If you do the outside work like you are meant to (not cheating on homework, reading the textbook, using her practice problems, and asking for assistance when you need it) then it is a relatively decent class. She can be a bit rude, but she has us take four tests and drops the lowest grade :)
Mridula Satyamurti is quite literally the worst professor I have had at Umass Boston. She turned an intro chemistry class into a 300 level course based on the workload for the exams. Her exams are extremely difficult and many people do not pass because she is not clear at all on the types of problems that will be on it. Try your best to avoid her!
Very ridiculous. Worst professor I've ever had. Cannot teach, lecture power points are useless, no effort on them. She expects you to know everything without teaching you. Exams are extremely difficult. Have to only focus on this class 24/7 but doesn't guarantee that you'll pass. Have to self-learn everything.
very rude and humiliate people in front of everyone. She cannot teach!
Chemistry can be a difficult topic, but professor Satyramurti provided plenty of resources for students who needed extra help. Her practice questions were great for reinforcing key topics before exams. SI sessions were extremely helpful if you had questions or struggled with a specific topic. As long as you put time into studying, you will do fine.
She does not teach us anything in class and expects us to do many homework assignments. It wouldn't be a problem if things were taught in class but we get nothing from the lecture, so how are we supposed to do assignments without learning?
I put all of my time all day every day into this class but still struggle because she does not teach us anything. I need to learn myself and this is torture. I pay tuition to this school for what? I can learn myself. I go to school and expect to learn, but the professor does not teach us all materials we need for hw assignments and exams!!
Listen, I love chemistry. But professors like these make it difficult to enjoy the subject. Withdrew simply out of frustration. Rude, condescending, and purposely calls out students embarrassing them in front of 200+ students. Pay tuition just to teach yourself because she talks about almost everything other than chem in the lectures. Just don't.
She is hilarious and very nice, she can get a little distracted by other off-topic discussions but she tries her best to make sure her students understand the topic, there are also plenty of extra credit opportunities if you go to class
This teacher is entirely awful. can't understand what she is saying. Clearly does not care for students, the workload is absolutely insane. The test is difficult due to the amount of studying that gotta be done, especially with all of the workload that needs to be remembered. She needs to improve on teaching and realize how the work heavy it is.
Chemistry is a pretty tough subject but she makes it easy to understand. She also heavily encourages us to ask questions during lectures, discussions, and office hours. The workload honestly isn't that much if you don't procrastinate. The exams are also not that hard if you study, most of the questions come from the homework and discussion work.
It started like any other chemistry class fine. Then unlike my high school chemistry it became dumber by the moment. She rats out students and tries to justify her actions by saying it's caring. If she was really caring her students wouldn't be complaining. Homework is as dumb as the lab reports. She is the definition of why chemistry has a bad rep
Not worth it.
RUN AWAY! DO NOT TAKE! Rants about everything. Is very rude and unhelpful. Does not attempt to help students when they ask for help. Is very dismissive and will make fun of you if u r noticed. Incredibly Test heavy and so much HW (barely count for ur grade). Forget about everything cause this class will take all ur time and energy.
i'm not kidding, if you like peace and your mental health, don't take this class. her class is too much work for the cost of nothing. 4 exams are worth 60% of your entire grade.1 gets dropped, so if you fail 2, honestly withdraw to save your GPA. if chem is required for your major, take any other professor than her, i bet they make it easier.
Avoid taking her courses if you can. She is very rude, unhelpful, and makes students uncomfortable in front of their peers in a room full of 200. I found her to be unclear and highly confusing when it came to teaching core concepts. Of all the science courses I have taken at UMB, this was by far the worst and most painful.
Do. The. Homework. If you can do the homework, you can do the exam.
just no. this class single-handedly made me contemplate changing my major and life choices
She did not teach me absolutely anything. She does not explain anything and assume you know what the topic is about then the next thing you know there are topics on the exam that you have never talked about in class. She also does not give exam review sheets which takes away a lot from the learning experience. Very intimidating learning environment
Avoid taking her if you can. She never answers emails or if she does its days later, doesn't give you the equations that will be provided on the test which forces you to memorize everything. Just don't take her class fr if you don't want your gpa tanked. She's also extremely rude and calls people out in lecture. Not professional at all..
Just avoid it at all costs if you can.
Lectures only help AFTER you read the book and do the hw. Use recorded lectures as review for best results. Don't tank 2 tests and expect a good grade, tests are 60% (a good final exam grade may save you). DO HW it's only 20% but i makes a difference. She gives practice problems, DO THEM they show up on tests. She also curves the grades so a 75=B-.
It is very difficult and confusing to learn with her, she often does not master what she teaches, and there is no source that you can study for the exam, in general, awful.
This Professor is very difficult to deal with I took her by no choice. She is very heavy in lecture add a new topic during last 5 mins during class and its 2 days before an exam. She doesn't properly explain the grading system so therefore nobody knows where they stand in the class despised the exams grades. If anyone takes her be very careful !!!
Professor Satyamurti is an excellent professor if you go to office hours she is so incredibly helpful and nice and will help you with what you don't understand. I know she has a lot of bad reviews but I can honestly say that if you study choose the material you don't understand and bring it to her she will help. ask questions during lecture!
Mridula's class requires a lot of independent study, but she provides helpful practice problems. Try using unstuckstudy alongside the textbook for effective prep - it really helped me stay on top of the material.
Mirdula dosnt know how to teach. She goes off on rants the whole entire lecture so you don't even god damn learn anything. Pls stop asking questions or don't even ask them because then she will talk about your question for 30 min. During exams she dosnt shut up and you can't focus. She also does not explain things clearly at all.
Taking this class was a mistake. Would constantly embarrass students in a 200+ person lecture, tests are worth 60% with the lowest grade dropped (Final is worth two tests). Would go on incredibly long tangents during class, waste of everyone's time. Didn't feel like I had enough time to finish each test, half of my friends withdrew.
If you put in the effort you will be fine. 60% of the grade comes from tests (4+a final) and the other 40% is divided between weekly hw, open-note quizzes, and attendance. I suggest you attend the lectures and do the practice problems and discussion wkst as they help a lot. She is a very caring prof despite her tangents and bad jokes.
This class is extremely test heavy but one exam does get dropped. Don't expect to pass if you don't study, it's pretty difficult to raise your grade with the remaining percentages. Study whenever possible and use the practice exams (very similar to actual exams). She is not the best instructor, as she does often get sidetracked during lecture.
Run. I was forced to take her and soon the class was basically empty. She is a bully who gets off on embarrassing her students. She is a terrible teacher and people literally switched majors because of her. The lecture is very test heavy, and be prepared to learn everything yourself. The only reason we passed is the curve. Avoid her at all costs!
*DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS*.. She cannot teach, you will end up teaching yourself, most times, she grades the right answer as incorrect, so always make sure you cross check all your tests. She won't help you to understand instead she will sent you to her TA, or she will ask “why can't you do it”. Like duh!!!! You are the professor not me
go to SI sessions to pass.
All she does is lecture about how bad students we all are and everything we are doing can be better. She doesn't even teach during lecture and has us read the slides ourselves. Lecture and discussion are just her rambling and then accusing us of not being able to learn from her inability. The other chem professor is 10x better
Test are make up 60% of your overall grade one is dropped but she is not understanding at all. I'm not the best test taker so my test scores were lower but I did really well on the weekly quizzes did all the homework, went to 80%of the SI sessions and even tho i calculated a c- she refused to give me a c- because my test scores were low. Very rude.
Mridula has a folder on her canvas called Practice Problems. She will never mention this but nearly all the MC test questions are from the practice problem folder. Go to the supplemental instruction sessions. If I can pass - anyone can, I promise.
Took only 3 tests and dropped none of them. Each test had about 16 questions, even though they were all multiple choice, each one was worth 5 or 6 points. Almost made me fail the class just because I got 4 questions wrong. The final was 80 questions, all multiple choice, and it covered every single topic. DONT TAKE HER CLASS
I think Prof. Satyamurti gets a bad rep. She grades on a crazy curve with final grades, meaning if you show up to lecture and do decent on tests (like im talking 60s/70s) you will have a much higher grade than you think you do. Despite other reviews I think it is evident that she really does care for students and wants what's best for us
Professor Satyamurti is not a good lecturer, she will often go off on tangents, call out students in the middle of lecture, often just read off her slides, and does not go over many sample problems in comparison to other professors. She can be condescending, her ability to teach is poor, and she fails to properly teach material, do not take her.
Worst professor I've had to date. She goes on unrelated tangents and drags out concepts better explained by grad students. So much coursework for a class that isn't even part of my major! She treats students like they're still in high school, very patronizing/condescending, and calls students out but hates when the same energy is given back.
She's smart but doesn't know how to teach. Doesn't understand we're just freshmen trying to master the basics. Her slides are as old as her and just copied from the textbook. Def be prepared to use outside sources to study because her lectures don't help. Go to her office hours if you have concerns, she might be mean but she will try to help you.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!!
