He is very patient, helpful, inclusive of class members, funny, great all-around professor.
I was not looking forward to this class prior to taking it. I was most pleasantly surprised. This guy is great! He's straightforward. The information is presented with extreme clarity and he knows this stuff inside and out. Great class.
He is an excellent professor. One of the best at DSC. Knows his stuff and makes the class really enjoyable. He does an excellent job in his Econ classes too.
Good Professor. Tons of thing to learn from this course. If you like to use Excel, you will like this class.
He is the best!
Cool guy, fun class. The class is very easy but still full of useful information. I personally do not have much interest in economics, but this was a rather pleasant way to fulfill the social science general ed requirement.
This class was way sweet. I seriously learned a lot, but it wasn't way hard either. So I figure he must just be a rockin teacher.
I took the 5 week 2010 Encon class. Very fast paced class, but everyone who took the final passed the class. Class average was over 80%. I would highly recommend taking his class to anyone. Good and bad, there is little to no homework in the class, and the grade in the class is based on 3 test and 6 quizzes.
If you have a hard time understanding people with accents, dont take the class. He doesnt give homework, and if he does, he doesnt grade it. His first 2 quizes are hard. Tests arent too bad. Dont buy the book, just pay attention to the lectures/power points. Hes a cool guy, funny, direct, good at answering questions. I give him a 9.5/10
this guy is a good teacher. he makes the class fairly easy and straight forward and helps you out. he says the occasional joke and explains everything well
Dr. Mahmud is a hard teacher. His accent is hard to tell sometimes what he is talking about. He does just lecture off of his powerpoint presentations. BE CAREFUL HE SAYS TO STUDY FOR THIS BECAUSE IT WILL BE ON THE TEST AND WILL NOT BE ON THE TEST!!! He is not willing to work with the student at all. I wouldn't take this guy if I were you!!
went everyday, super easy A, never used a textbook because of his online notes
Wonderful teacher. One of the best I've had. He knows his subject and teaches it well. I've learned a lot from his class.
Terrible teacher. If you are an interactive learner this will be the hardest class you ever take. He is not willing to explain concepts in depth, he doesn't use any form of teaching tactic besides lecturing, and he gets very frustrated if you ask questions. His accent is hard to understand. I would suggest taking the class online.
Dr. Mahmud is a pretty difficult teacher. He does not grade any homework. He does not give any feedback on any assignments he gives. You are pretty much on your own to understand the material in this class. Your entire grade is based on 4 quizzes, 2 tests, and the final exam. If you are ready to teach yourself the material, you'll be okay.
As said earlier, "Your entire grade is based on 4 quizzes, 2 tests, and the final exam." This is true but he covers 95% if not all the material on these tests in class by lecture and power point. His accent only got in the way once maybe twice the whole semester (maybe I'm just used to foreign accents). I never got my book, didn't need it.
Useful and practical knowledge. This is not a discussion class. Totally lecture with minimal student input. That being said, this was a very good class and good teacher.
Can be hard to comprehend due to his accent, although very knowledgeable. Class is based on tests and quizzes with some attendance.
My favorite professor so far! Has a great sense of humor and I love the way he teaches! Makes it easy to pass with an A if you put the smallest effort in. You become used to his accent after the first day or two and it's not a problem. Perfect summer course to take!
He's a great teacher but I just hated the subject. There is no homework - just tests and quizzes.
He literally said, "I don't care if every single one of you fail my class." Econ is hard to understand and even harder when you can't understand if he's speaking English. Hard class from a professor who doesn't care at all.
Professor Mahmud has a pretty thick accent and so it made it hard for me to get a lot out of his class because I was spending so much time trying to understand what he was saying that I did not really comprehend it. The only grades in the class are the quizzes and exams but he is willing to change the weight on the latter exams if you show growth.
Professor Mahmud Knows his stuff. However, he is really hard to understand because of his accent. Your grade is pretty much based off of the quizzes you take and exams. There is really no extra credit although he does drop two quiz scores. If you show up to class and study the study guides you should pass the class.
I took ECON 2010 and 2020 from Mahmud, He is the best professor at Dixie State in my opinion. No homework, no textbook reading. He teaches you everything you need to know in class. The quizzes and tests are really easy if you pay attention in class and study a little before taking them.
Munir Mahmud is an amazing teacher, his accent makes him hard to understand though. Make sure that if you aren't getting something or don't understand it, to get help after class. He is very good about helping you out and re-explaining things IF YOU ASK. He is very personable and really knows his subject!
Dr. Mahmud is soo hard. Your grade depends 100% on tests and quizzes. There is no homework. If you are a terrible tester like me, then you will fail his class. Would recommend not taking from him if you can. This was the first class in my 5 years of college that I actually failed.
Honestly one of the worst professors I have ever had. He is straight up rude, yells at students. Grades depend on quizzes, attendance, and tests. Extremely difficult quizzes and tests. No offense to him but he is very hard to understand, which isn't his fault. But it is a hard subject and the language barrier definitely plays a big part.
His lectures can get a little boring but they are necessary. He follows the powerpoints but he adds details and examples that really do help on the quizzes. As long as you show up to class you'll pass. There isn't a lot of homework either.
Dr. Mahmud is by far one of my favorite professors! His accent can be hard to understand at times, but he is always willing to repeat himself with a smile. The biggest thing I like about his class is, he is fair. He gives a couple extra credit questions on the exams and adds a small boost of extra credit for attendance. I wish I had him for Micro!
He will drop your lowest quiz and shift the weight of your final to mask a bad test score, (if needed.) You are allowed a 3x5 card during your test which is more than fair considering what his tests cover. I took his class during a Full-time summer block schedule while working a full-time job and still scored 101%. His class is great!!
Gives great lectures. Quizzes and exams contain everything you learned in class. Goes over quizzes so you know what to fix by the time the exam comes. Taught everything clearly, and would answer questions if you had any.
He was hard to understand and had different answers to practice quizzes than were listed in the book.
He has a very heavy accent so he can be hard to understand sometimes. He never assigns/grades homework. But if you don't come to class and study outside of class it's hard to pass or understand the material. The first half of the semester the class seems intimidating but it gets easier.
Professor Munir gets the bad rep for Econ, but honestly there's not much options for econ professors at Dixie State. Go to class, stay off your phone, and you'll get an A. Pay attention to his lectures and do your test reviews, because its basically the test. He's a fine professor, you'll get an A
AWFUL! AVOID CLASS. he basically throws the book at you and expects you to figure everything out on your own with little help. No remorse for students at all.
Hard to understand. Bank on your textbook for review and solid understanding of the course.
He is the WORST professor I've ever had. He has no idea what he is doing, and half the time the students are teaching him how to use basic excel functions. He does not care about grading exams and will take his sweet time to let you know what your grade is. He doesn't care about his students or the class itself. Do not take a class with him.
Mahmud gets a bad wrap at Dixie mainly because his accent is hard to understand. There are several quizzes that are straight forward and 4 tests, each of which, you will have access to a handwritten note card. The final can be used to replace your lowest test score. The bottom line is, you reap what you sow in his class.
Took this professor for Macro and Microeconomics. It was a tough class but I learned a lot. His lectures prepare you for the quizzes and tests, but you have to study to be able to pass.
Unfortunately, this was by far the hardest class I've ever taken. The overall course design is weak and gives student little room to make mistakes. Personally, I don't think you should base a student's knowledge only on tests & quiz scores. I spent more time studying and preparing for this class than any of my others combined.
Very good at teaching the material. Only gives 4 quizzes and 4 tests plus attendance for your grade. Lets you use a notecard on all the tests as well.
Dr. Mahmud is a jolly man. The class is relatively easy if you pay attention and study.
Don't take his class unless you love your classmates teaching you the material. He acts like he knows nothing about statistics or excel. He will make mistakes and the other students have to correct him. But, when it comes to grading, you get no lei way what so ever. He takes about a month to grade all of your assignments. Worst teacher I've had.
I like Dr. Mahmud as a person but it's sometimes hard to understand him due to his accent. To get a decent grade, DO VERY GOOD on all the assignments; they're worth 35% of your grade. The final is 30% & other tests are 15%. You MUST study the material and practice. If you don't your grade will plummet fast. DO NOT wing assignments or tests.
Awful, he grades based on a few assignments and then 2 tests that are 35% of your grade each. I hated this class and it is my only class in college I got a D in. Normally an A student. I took this class with someone else and understood the material and passed with flying colors.
His grading is unfair and very hard to understand
Tough grader, didnt grade assignments fast so I didnt know what I needed to study and fix for the test. Grades based on only a few things and hard to understand. It was durning covid and he almost made our class take an in person exam. Unfair and takes pride in people not passing his class
Do not take this class. Worst class ever, he gave out a 2 1/2 hour test on thanksgiving break due the Wednesday before thanksgiving. Doesnt grade your assignments but says the test are just like the assignments. If you fail his test you pretty much fail the class
The only things you're graded on are a few tests and the final. No assignments or anything. This was my only professor that didn't do assignments or even extra credit. So if you are anything like me and suck at tests, don't take this class or you will fail. The class is not entertaining and I would not take it if I had the option. 2/10
This was absolutely the worst grade I have EVER gotten in my ENTIRE academic career. I tested above average on all of the tests, but the final is a freaking joke. He barely prepares you and doesn't help you review. He is so lecture-heavy and very hard to understand. Nice guy, good person, but I don't recommend taking his class.
He is not an easy A kind of teacher and thats why I think he has such a bad rep. His test are hard but if you study hard and focus on the slides that he is presenting in class youll pass. Contacting him if you have an issue he will make it fair and is super helpful.
He Definitely knows the material, but Dr. Mahmud would absolutely beg for participation. If you gave a wrong answer, you would get blasted in front of the entire class and made to feel like an idiot. His grading system was a little strange. Whatever canvas says is totally wrong. He keeps his own spreadsheet and you need to figure it out.
This is by far the worst teacher for Math. His accent is hard to understand and he makes you feel like an idiot and yell at you if you don't understand or are trying to keep up with him
I actually took his class for stats 2040 he acts like you know the topic before your start the class. and he goes wayyy too fast and his accent makes it hard to understand whats going on in class definitely don't recommend him for stats.
Professor Mahmud is actually a good teacher. He displays anonymous grades of everyone in the class and their attendance. Those who attended did well. Those who didn't attend did poorly and come here to complain about it. He prepares students for quizzes and exams very well and he does a lot of practice problems in class. Follow along. It's easy.
Professor Mahmud tells you exactly what you need to know to do well on quizzes and exams. Then, he takes you through plenty of practice problems. If you pay attention and attend class, it's not too difficult to get a good grade.
He takes pride in students not passing. He waited until finals week to grade ALL of our assignments (which are worth 35% of our grade), so you basically have no idea how youre doing in the class. The average test score was a 56% on the second exam he gave, and he wont curve it. Clearly these scores reflect on him. Worst professor Ive ever had.
This class started out terribly hard for me, I couldnt understand professor Mahmud, I was basically failing at midterm, I spoke to him one time, he helped me understand all the graphs and concepts, extremely willing to help!
One of the worst classes I have yet to take here at Dixie State. I would not recommend taking a class from him. I did not understand any of the material and ended up failing the final exam.
It's a little difficult to understand him at first but you'll get used to his accent. He's an amazing professor, explains things really well. Take notes and pay attention and you'll do fine. Occasionally I'd use the textbook to help me understand concepts I didn't get from the class, if you do that you'll be fine.
Great lectures, he gives a lot of examples. If you right down the tips and tricks he gives you and form a study group/good habits you'll do fine. His accent isn't too bad actually, just be ready to laugh when he says shirts. The quiz and exams are fair, just read through the options carefully and you'll pass the class.
I have zero interest in economics, so that definitely contributed - but I did not like this class. Professor Mahmud is a good guy but the class is literally only based off of quizzes and tests. There is no homework so you have to really pay attention in class and take notes and sometimes he can be hard to follow!
He takes pride in students doing poorly in his class. Your entire grade is based off just a few tests and quizzes. Offers very little help and covers each topic one time and one time only. He will not hesitate to insult a student/class for having questions. I cannot stress enough how much I regret taking his class, and I got a good grade.
Only graded on tests and quizzes. Rude to students, and hard to follow. Dont recommend him. A lot of our class failed
He will make you go to the testing center for any assignments because students in the past have cheated also , he only puts attendance and test scores on the grade so if you bomb a quiz youre screwed
He grades on quizzes, exams, and attendance only. He has a thick accent that is hard to understand. He rarely returns emails. He is not a very nice or understanding person. All exams/ quizzes are given in the testing center, only gives a 10 hour window to take them, but does not make exceptions for anyone who cannot take it during that time period.
Probably one of the worst professors I have ever had experience with. The man claims to respond to messages and emails within 24 hours. However, I have had to wait up to a week to get an answer if I even get one at all. When he has responded to me he often completely disregards the issue. DO NOT TAKE FROM THIS PROFESSOR!
The reason I passed his class was because of my own due diligence. I stopped going to his lectures because I couldn't understand him, and found it more beneficial to teach myself. As a result I dropped a whole letter grade! I don't even bother asking for help or even extra credit because of his condescending attitude towards his students. Good luck
Waits until after the Final Exam to grade assignments and Exams. So, don't expect feedback. Have fun not knowing what to study :)
The class was a month behind the syllabus at all times and he never updated it. Doesnt grade anything until the last 2 days of the semester so youll never know where you stand. Lectures borderline impossible to understand. Makes mistakes in his own lectures. Tests are very hard to understand. Average on tests was always a D or lower. Do not take!
The absolute worst professor I have ever met. I have always put lots of effort in classes and always received A's. However, this class I failed (C-) and the professor refused to offer extra credit. He slurs his words in lectures and it's impossible to understand his accent. Please do whatever you can to avoid him and go with literally anyone else.
Okay, I know professor Mahmud has a lower rating. I think this is because he is harder to understand due to his accent, and your grade is dependent on the tests. Despite what the other reviews say, I loved his class. I was able to go to class, understand the content pretty well and with very little studying, I was able to ace the exams.
Okay I know he gets a bad rep but I really think it's because his accent is very difficult to understand at the beginning. I wouldn't say he's the greatest professor, but I also wouldn't say he's the worst. The tests I would say were semi difficult, if you know what to study/understand the concepts you can do good on the tests.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. His accent is soooooo hard to understand and he says if you can't understand him just read the book. The book has absolutely nothing to do with the tests and your whole grade is tests. After studying for a few hours to get a good grade on the first exam just to fail it is diminishing. Try to avoid him as much as possible.
Although Munir is hard to understand he really does have students best interest. If you show up and talk to him a couple times he will respect you and see you are trying. Munir is extremely intelligent and knows his stuff!
Some students don't like Mahmud but personally I really like his class because if you pay attention, attend class, and study than its not a heavy work load. He hardly ever assigns homework which I appreciate because I have so much other homework. He can be hard to understand but he records all his lectures, you can rewatch them which helps.
I know some students don't like him because of his accent, but it is not that hard to figure out what he is saying. He knows his stuff and goes in-depth. If you study and go to class, then you should be able to be fine. 11 tests and he will drop your lowest. Attendance is important in his class.
A bit hard to understand during the first few weeks of the semester, but after you get past that he is an awesome professor and covers the topic in depth.
This class is very difficult already and add his accent on top of it, nearly impossible. He frequently made fun of students for not knowing the answer to questions or not knowing the answer fast enough. He was not helpful and was really degrading in class.
One week till the final, and 1 out of 8 assignments have been graded! He never answers questions about the homework because "he covered it in lecture so you should be able to figure it out." When you do ask a question, he makes jokes about it. He just doesn't care about his students is what it feels like. I have always done good in math until now.
Absolutely horrendous do not take under any circumstance.
Dr. Mahmud is not a bad teacher by any means the way he teaches the class just makes it difficult. You are graded entirely off of 4 quizzes and 3 exams so doing poorly can severely effect your grade but he does not give any homework which is nice. Attendance is mandatory and it is worth going for the extra info he covers.
I have no words... I begged him for extra credit and his response back to me basically said that I knew my grade and should've done better. Normally I always give teachers the benefit of the doubt but I was really disappointed to not even have gotten a genuine response from a sincere email.
I liked Mr Munir in the beginning but then quickly realized that his teaching style isn't one that most students like. It's all lecture based no assignments. He gives exams and tests about the lectures and material but doesn't allow you to use notes on the tests. He expects you to remember everything about the material and then go take a test crazy
Pros:Dr Munir is very smart and knows Econ Cons:He is not a great teacher of Econ. His accent makes it tough to understand anything he says. He expects you to learn everything from his lectures in class. He will make fun of you in class if you don't answer questions correctly. Do not under any circumstances, take this class.
Just take this piece of advice first, don't take economics from this professor if you want to learn economics, even if you just want to get a good grade. I took this class online. The lectures were long and hard to understand. Group projects in an online class and so many unnecessary discussion boards. This is the first review I have ever written.
ok. he is not a bad professor. econ is hard. i've had several professors, & I never do well in econ. he has an accent but if you rewatch the lectures on canvas, its easier to understand. exams/quizzes are in testing center. he'll work with you if you ask to take a quiz early if you have something come up. study hard & don't take things personally.
If you do take this class, use You Tube videos as well. Buy the book, even though he says you don't need it. There isn't more to grade from than lecture videos and tests. I went in to ask for extra assignments to bring my grade up. I didn't receive any. He is a nice enough professor, just not the best at teaching this course.
His class is only for business majors, awesome that there's no hw but that just means you have to study hard for quizzes and exams, beware of his accent
He is super hard to understand and quick to make fun of students who give wrong answers. The whole class is graded in tests that he takes forever to grade, and the "practice test" is no help. I understand that econ is a difficult subject regardless, however I would do anything I could to avoid having him.
Not a good professor. Do not take this class in person, his attendance is mandatory and spends the entire class lecturing and uses practice tests and study guides that are nothing like the tests. He does not cooperate with any issues with tests or anything you need. Econ is hard but with a terrible professor makes it worse, I do not recommend.
The worst professor I've ever had! He would get upset if anyone had any questions and didn't give any insight on what to study or how to study. The grade is based on 3 exams and 4 quizzes.
Absolutely the worst professor I've had. Posts 3-4 hours of him reading a textbook a week and that is the course. Is not responsive to emails and not willing to work with individuals. He will find any reason to doc your grade.
Wildly inconsistent. He made detailed lecture vids (I had no issue with his accent) and told us exactly what was on tests. Basically no homework until the end, then suddenly a group project and 7 discussion assignments due before the final; he was weirdly tough grading these—do well on the 3 tests to pass (lowest of the four quizzes is dropped).
What a disorienting course. Presentations are great, but the greatness stops there. He doesn't seem to believe in homework, and then all of a sudden there's an afterthought of a group project at the end. Won't take kindly to special requests like taking an exam early, and you will probably get ghosted. He is doing the bare minimum for a class setup
Professor munir is one f those professors that put all the blame on students when the whole class does not get one of his concepts. He never takes any responsability for not being able to teach better. He will also make random questions and make nasty comments if you do not know the answer.
Took Econ 2010 online over the summer. Not bad from the video lectures. The main complaint I have is the final test didn't reflect what we learned. On the second to last test, I got around 92% with the class average somewhere in the 80s%, but the final I got 56% and the class average was 48%. There was one group project which of course sucks online
Uninspiring to say the least.
There was a lack of communication all term, it was an online course and so there was no in person period to ask questions or be taught anything. Very difficult to understand through pre recorded video lectures and was a real pain to work with towards the end of term surrounding grading and final grades. Good luck, choose someone else.
Each lesson is him reading over a slideshow, the slides are great but the lack of homework and outside help isn't. Only assignments are quizzes/exams for each section and the final, I struggled on the tests because many questions did not reflect what we learned. His attitude is not the greatest, goodluck!
I had his online course. basically he acted like it was an in person course because he had a group project. it absolutely sucks working with random students when it's online. he expects too much from his assignments and isn't helpful. online class is better than in person. he grades strict on his discussion posts. goodluck!
Utah tech should be embarrassed. Awful representation of the university. Does not communicate, slow to grade, gives no feedback, extremely unreasonable, exams are difficult because they don't reflect what he talks about, not great English, doesn't respond to emails. Even if you're a great student - he'll show you otherwise.
NEVER TAKE HIM! ECON is hard as it is and he is an awful professor. He has a strong south east asian accent which makes it worse. You are graded on four quizzes and three exams. No homework, but it's easy to get lost in his class.
