This guy is really fun. He is hard to understand at times bc he's kinda fobby but its not that bad. He makes jokes a lot and keeps class pretty light hearted. I'd definitely take him again!
HE'S A COOL TEACHER, YOU HAVE TO REALLY DO YOUR HOMEWORK IN HIS CLASS AND UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL. HE GIVES EXTRA CREDIT FOR EXTRA HOURS SPENT AT THE MATH LAB. YOU JUST HAVE TO SHOW THAT YOU'RE REALLY PUTTING IN THE EFFORT TO DO WELL IN HIS CLASS AND YOUR GRADE WILL SHOW IT.
Great teaching and visual on board, but need a little work on verbal.
I didnt want to come back after his first lecture. But as i got to know him, he turned out to be a prof. that really cares for you, in a detached type of way. He gives lots of examples, is flexible and firm both at the sametime. I couldnt have asked for a better prof. and I love that i stayed and never missed any of his lectures. The best professo
Lum is a fun teacher with sarcastic sense of humor. He has an accent that is easily understandable, with a few weird pronunciations for certain words. He assigns homework every session, which is exactly the kind of problems on the quizzes. He gives clear general solutions and plenty of examples. Attend lecture and do the homework and youll get an A
A real hands-on teacher. If you don't understand something, he is completely willing to help you out with it during class or his office hours. Hw is given every class, but is actually really easy and there is limited textbook use. The overall grade is based on numerous things, so it's easy to maintain a certain grade.
Mr. Lum is an amazing professor. He makes everything approachable and clear. If he taught all math classes, I would be a math major.
Mr. Lum was an awesome teacher! He was very clear and always gave study guides a week prior to the class. If you do all the homework, go to class, and take notes, you should get an A.
mr. lum was an awesome teacher! He always gave study guides a week prior to the test. If you do all the homework, go to class, and take notes, you should het an A.
Professor Lum is very nice, and I really like his teaching method. His accent might be a little bit funny but overall he is really a great teacher.
Initially, I was a little bit scared of not getting good grades in his class because I kept getting Bs, Cs and Ds for quizes. But as long as you always do your homework, take notes and study, especially for final its worth 40% of the grades, you should get an A.
one of the best teachers in DVC. really organized. No more words. Just TAKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Professor Lum is a great teacher. He is really organized which helped me a lot. In class he would always review a topic we had just discussed in the previous lecture - so that helped as well. I actually was happy to come to his 8:00a.m class. He gave study guides but it wasn't practice problems, just the names of the topics that were on the test.
A really good professor!!! Lum is very clear and very good at explaining. Assigns HW every class and grades it. A total of 6 quizzes and a final. The final is 40%!!!!! of your final grade, and he makes the final REALLY hard!!! Other than the final, the class and quizzes were easy. Just really make sure you study extra hard for the final.
BEST FREAKING MATH TEACHER HANDS DOWN!!!!!!!!!! I took Lum for 121 and 191 and honestly I freakin nailed it because of Lum. I didn't realize how good I can be at math til I took him.. He is just really organized and clear at what he does. The final was super hard though so beware.. You need to stop reading reviews and take Lum though!!!!!!!!!!!!
I took this class during the summer, so my experience may be different. The teacher was very thorough, although sometimes hard to understand because of his accent. Tests and quizzes are based on homework, and everything is graded with great scrutiny, which is good or bad depending on what you want from the class. You will learn linear algebra.
The worst part is just that his finals is 40%, he gave easy tests on the beginning and shock you with a hard final, and he sometimes doesn't respect his student when asked after class. But on the other hand he teaches very clearly and gives out odd number hw
Awesome teacher! Knows his material and knows how to teach. He makes even the hardest concepts simple. Assigns little but specific HW. He is extremely clear in his expectations. If you find a test problem difficult it is because you are not following his instructions from class. Practice what he teaches and its a breeze!
He is a really good teacher. A lot of homework but clear lectures so if you listen the lectures and do the homework you will definitely pass!
sometimes his pronounciation but he's really clear
This was the worst experience I had so far with a professor from DVC. He gives you only have 1 hour to finish a 24-26 problem test that is not easy at all. Gives a lot of homework every class! Not willing to help you after class if you have any questions. Let's us go home early every class and so we are not prepared for tests. Lot of people dropped
he goes thru material way 2 fast and he gives you 1 sec to decide if u have question and when u ask friend he always gives sarcastic ans. and he never finish the whole prob. leaves u confused. he grades way too hard! & on tests there are 20 problems and then hard problems on the next page & 1 hour time. will never take him again it was a mistake
I came into this class with very high expectations, he was good for the first week then began to be a horrible teacher. I would ask what he was doing in the steps he would say "it just disappears" always skips test lets you out early for calc 3 had 10 derivative integral problems( which were extremely hard) then 3 regular problems STAY AWAY!!!!
There are 6 quizzes and one final. He will drop two lowest quizzes, and final is 40% of your overall grade. He will assign you HW everyday, but if you do HW, you don't need to study for quizzes because quizzes are very easy. He might not teach you well, but don't worry because his quiz and final are straightforward.
This was the worst experience I have ever had in DVC. Never gonna take him again. Try to take him if you think you are genius, at least this was what he thinks you are. He is a really tough grader!!!!!! never listen to your opinion. Test with something that he thinks you suppose to know, but you actually don't know.
Very tough. Do not take him. I was a 4.0 student until I took his class.
He seems to be rushed to finish all the math problems during the class lecture. I observed him looking at his watch during the lecture and sometimes dismiss us from the class one hour earlier. When he explains the math problems, he makes a lot of sarcastic jokes that doesn't make any sense. He isn't willing to help us when we ask for his help.
He's d MOST organised teacher ever! His notes are BEST! The workload is heavy, but it makes you understand. He skips many things that he thinks are overwhelming. His exams are also very straightforward, but you'll learn a lot! He has accent, but you'll get used to. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! But, if you want to learn maths concept, he's not 4 u. Final 40%
Great teacher! He is extremely organized and give you tons of practice problems during class. He has a heavy accent but he writes down everything he says on the board as he is speaking so just sit in the front and write everything down. Do this and redo all the example problems before the tests and you will be fine.
THE BEST! His lecture was organised and smooth. He skips things that is not important, gives lots of practice and homework problem (Sometimes he solved hard HW question in class). Tests and Final 40% was easy because you only need to review CLASS and GRADED HOMEWORK PROBLEM ONLY! He always let you go 1-2 hours early! TAKE HIS CLASS AND PARTY ON!
Took him summer 2016. Organized, clear notes, straightforward, always got out of class early, (tries to be) funny, covered important topics, test every week, a lot of HW, used book for HW, not boring, fast paced. I enjoyed this class. Some people may have felt rushed but I saw his fast pace as part of an exciting challenge. Only con: has an accent.
He gives LOTS of HW but it helps to practice. Graded HW problems appear on the quizzes (6 of them, 2 dropped). Many quiz problems are repeated on other quizzes AND the final. It takes some time to get used to his accent and teaching/grading style but getting A is def possible. Very clear lectures. Overall, I recommend taking him.
Very straightforward teacher, goes over what you need to know, and rarely not much else - very few surprises on the 6 'parties' we have. The final did have quite a few 'tricky' problems however. Homework is assigned for every class, with the lowest four dropped - I recommend slader to check your answers/problem solving method online. Overall great.
Took his class in the summer and never felt like a bad choice taking his 292 class. He assigns homework everyday and parties (including final party) every week. His lectures are smooth and clear, his teaching style is easy to follow and dismisses us at least 1 hour early everyday which is AWESOME! His sense of humor is very funny too! Right choice!
He's accent his very think and hard to follow. He always seemed to rush through lectures. Class is dismissed at least an hour early.
You will never regret to take his awesome math lecture and successful to earn grade A
He's a hard grader and deducts lots of points for little stuff. Exams are doable if he decides to tell you what to prepare for. Not very approachable outside class as his office hours are by appointment only.
He gives a TON of homework, which would be fine but there's little time to do them all. Class are shorter than the schedule and you only have 1 hour for tests. The trig questions destroyed my grade.
Seriously, he jumps around the textbook like crazy and doesn't follow any order at all which makes it supper confusing. I thought I'd read ahead 5 section in advance to prepare, but no, lectures starts 2 chapters ahead of that...
Multi-variable calc is one of the hardest class I ever took. Professor is a hard grader and I agree that he is very strict on timing when it comes to tests. Graphing calculators are not allowed.
Tons of homework. Grading test very strictly. Not appreciate to answer the students quiestions. So many party(tests)
Easy tests but you will lose many unexpected points from tough grading. Lots of homework goood pratice. He has his own easy way of solving problems. So it will be fine but you wont learn any maths concepts or logical thinking. Can be hard to ask questions.
Hard to ask questions, tough grader, easy tests but lose points easily. Hard final.
You are expected either to read the text on you own and in advance or not care about understanding what the heck we are doing (impossible for me, and if you ask "why" questions, you are either pesky and wasting class time or too stupid to worth his time). He gives handout + book titles explaining theory - NOT on the exam and are up to you to read.
Tough grader, dont love answering the students questions. 40 percent at final. 20 pt of each questions, if you do one wrong, you get b
He is 'the' professor to take at DVC if you're into higher math & calc-based physics. Very organized, well-structure lectures. Hw are a breeze if you have his notes and I never felt the need to reference the book at all. Let you off early most days. Though he structures things differently so you might dread the hw if you don't have notes.
I personally find his accent easy to figure out, lecture has this 'flow' to it that makes him easy to follow. Furthermore, he writes down everything as he said them, fast but neatly. Take notes! I can't stretch this enough; his method is different from the book, which I find more efficient and intuitive. Hard subject but well worth it.
A concise lecturer that teaches you what you need to know for the quizzes and exams. Take notes! His way of tackling problems are modified from the textbook's, and the techniques he passes on are efficient shortcuts to the correct answers. Quizzes and exams are questions from hw and lecture notes, so pay attention!
Not very friendly, tough grader
The professor is very straightforward with his exams, meaning that his teaching will most of the time show up later in his exams. Final exam is 40% and "ok". Prepare your integral&derivative skills because he expects you to know them. Other than that, he's a very funny and kind professor. Lectures aren't boring and very fun to attend to. Good Luck!
I absolutely love this guy, I've had a hard time learning Calculus in the past but he makes it easier. His lecture consists of what's on the test and he gives hw from the book. I recommend reading your notes from lecture and taking his steps. He also hands out random but helpful guides with no context. If you struggle, look for a campus tutor... :D
Good professor, extremely rare nowadays in mathematics. If you want water-tight foundations, I highly recommend him.
Lum is a unique guy and so is his teaching. HW 20%. Final 40%. There are 6 tests (but they are actually more "quiz-like," and he calls them "parties") that make up 40% and he drops the two lowest quiz scores. I didn't use the text book once. I feel like I might not be prepared well enough for Calc 1, regardless I'm taking him again for math 192.
Knows a lot about calculus. Also knows the proper way to teach it. Just come to lecture, solves the exercises on the broad (quickly), and you'll have no problem with hw or parties. Has the best notes-I keep all his notes after 2 years now. Take him if you get the chance. No regrets.
I personally find this a low-stress class. Prof has a straight forward way of looking at the problems. Just don't fall behind on the homework and you'll be fine. Quizzes and final covers the same types of problem in lectures and hw. He has a different way of doing things that I much prefer.
He is genuinely an easy going person and gives easy quizzes. I have already learnt calculus in high school and missed almost all his classes so I could not reveal his other side of teaching grea. I am doubtful of his ability in teaching math because he loves deduct marks on something that is written right and don't expect him to give you feedback.
His english is horrible. Doesn't make sense when you ask him questions he doesn't know what you are talking about. This class is for students who already know everything and need to take the class for credit. Don't take this class if you need help learning upper level math.
Lum has his lectures planned out very well and let my class out early almost every time. His accent takes a day or two to be able to understand clearly. He has a unique lecture style and assigns a lot of homework. He will not give you ANY partial credit on your quizzes or exams, and I got Cs on a lot of quizzes that I should have had As or Bs on.
I love Mr. Lum. The way he organized his lectures and explained things made it really easy for me to understand. I learn well by seeing examples and he provided lots of examples for all the things he would teach. He does give lots of homework though and the final is a big part of your grade. He's not everyone's cup of tea, but I really liked him.
Took math class over the summer, online through DVC. Final worth 40%, 4 quizzes each worth 10%. Tough grader. Homeworks were very long. Instructor only had recorded videos and not live lectures, but had office hours. A bit hard to understand (partly due to heavy accent) but is very knowledgeable and is not clueless at all.
took during the summer and his class was brutal, prof has an accent so it takes time to get used to, his live sessions are office hours, recorded videos he doesn't explain much about concepts just says how to do them. 10 hws worth 20%, 4 quizzes 40%, final exam 40%. He grades pretty tough, hw grade is completion and accuracy of a few randomly #s
If you struggle with math as is, this class is kind of hard. He kind of expects to just remember everything from calc 1 to bring onto calc 2. Hard time to understand with his thick accent and homework is heavy. First 3 homework assignments I got 70% even though I was using slader to check.
Calculus is very hard for me but with Prof. Lum, he made it so easy. He is a cool Prof. Gives extra credit, drop 2 lowest Q's and 3 lowest HW's. Even tho he has an accent, you'll still understand as long as you focus and look at his examples while he's explaining. As usual, lot of HW's but it prepares you for the Quiz. Quizzes are easy!
I took professor MLUM's class for Calc 3 and I must say that he grades our papers based on a very weird criteria. He mistakes us for answers that shouldn't have been wrong, for instance forgetting to circle our final answers and many more. Do not take his class as he grades his students heavily and do not give you the points that you deserve.
Unlike other profs, he makes his students feel that it's okay to be wrong & to not be burdened by it; he is considerate. Calculus is hard for me, tbh this is my 2nd time taking this class. I'm glad I took Mr. Lum's class bc if I compare this class to my previous ones, this is more chill and easy. Lots of HWs but it'll prepare you for the Quizzes.
I'm taking Calculus II for the second time and Professor Lum's class is way easier than my previous class! What I like about Prof. Lum is that even the topics may include algebra, graphing, applications, etc., he doesn't burden his students with doing a lot in these areas and focuses mainly on the calculus part. very straightforward class.
Terrible professor, garbage at explaining and assisting students. He does pre-recorded lecture videos that FAIL TO TEACH STUDENTS ACTUAL TOPICS. Only does 1 PROBLEM during actual Zoom sessions, and expects all students to comprehend. An insane homework grader. Completed all homework? You will still only get credit for correct answers. DO NOT TAKE
If u r someone who genuinely wants to understand the math concepts DONT take this class. Mr. lum just tells you how to solve something but very vaguely! no explanation behind why we want to know/learn something or how it's applied. the hw assignments are brutal, 1-2 per week. tests arent too bad, problems can sometimes be from hw and/or lecture.
Took his online class during fall. Super heavy homework. Most of the time, his lecture are vague and useless, so you have to learn it by yourself. 6 quizzes worth 40%, final 40%. The final is very complicated. Overall, it's an very hard A. If you don't want to learn math, stay away from him. If you want to learn math, stay further away from him
Lum's grading criteria are weird. Even though I get all the questions right, I may still lose points for a few insignificant parts. His video is useless since he just explains some super basic problem. His HW is very repetitive and tedious. His office hour is perfunctory. Do not recommend him.
His lectures and videos are poor quality. Unclear grading criteria: he will take points off for stuff like showing more work than you need to. He does not comment on your work at all, only circling it so you never know what he wants until you ask in an office hour. Insane amount of homework. For the love of god avoid
So you'll do 6 of what he likes to call "parties" not including your final exam. He gives LOTS of HW but doesn't try to trick you on exams and keeps it short and sweet. Make sure you're comfortable with the end of Calc 1 because he moves quickly. Funny guy IMO and is pretty chill to talk with. Loves football and keeps class on the shorter end.
It was a tough beginning with him but it got better throughout the semester. He will be there for you, he does give a lot of homework and he can be a tough grader at some moments.
if you want to understand what you are doing don't take lum, he doesn't explain anything well and if extremely test heavy i barely managed to get by in this class. i wish i had taken another professor but i got stuck in his class. 20% hw, and 40% each for the midterms and the final exam. he gives 3 hrs for midterms and 5 hrs for final exam
I took calculus 2 with Professor Lum in the Spring of 2021. He was seriously the best math teacher I've ever had. He's super clear in his expectations of what you should be doing in his course and well organized. Watch his lecture videos, do the homework, show up to lecture, and ask questions if somethings unclear. He had a good sense of humor too.
His lecture recordings were incredibly helpful in preparing for quizzes and the Final Exam. My only gripe with him is that the homework was incredibly time-consuming and long, and he is a very tough and unclear grader on assignments. Overall, Professor Lum was a good professor for calculus and I definitely learned a lot in his class.
Mr. Lum was my least favorite at DVC. His teaching style is odd, he doesn't follow the DVC-wide rules for test scheduling policies and assigns a ludicrous amount of homework that is graded very confusingly. His quizzes and test are graded easier in comparison, and are very similar to his lectures, but the lectures are confusing
Main problem is we didn't learn Polar coordinates or Parametric equations and we need it for Calculus 3. It's a hard class homework wise. The assignments take forever and are graded on accuracy by a few problems. Notebooks filled. Quizzes are straightforward similar to the homework. In Fall of 2021, we could drop 2/6 of them. Meetings are optional
This class is lecture heavy, needs a lot of study for quizzes, which weigh a lot. Homework also weigh almost as much as quizzes, and Mr. Lum is not an easy grader. He choose one part of the homework he wants to grade and if you got that question or part wrong, your entire homework is wrong. I attended every lecture and still couldn't manage.
Really hard grader, attendances needed
Worst professor I've had by far. Pros = Let you drop 3/22 HW and 2/6 quizzes. Cons = He is an insanely harsh grader. No late HW. Friendly in lectures, unapproachable in person. Confusing lectures, had to self-teach calculus. Expect 8+ hours of HW. Irrelevant EC. Funny sidenote attendance is not mandatory but you have to turn in HW in person.
Not recommended, The class average is very low. beginners choose his class, you can choose any class on YouTube, it is better than his.
Mr. Lum is not a good teacher at all. At first the poor guy was hard to understand but then he just backed that up by not knowing how to teach. Just reads off notes. Be prepared to self teach EVERYTHING. If you go to office hours, he will not help you. Just save your time and go on khan academy. STAY AWAY!
Lots of Repetitive no brainer homework. Imagine 30 stupid repetitive questions in a day. I'm totally fine with a tough course, but this course is not tough is just stupid. You will learn nothing from Lum munlock because he is not able to teach and he is not good at math. The only thing he knows is giving some simple examples about computation.
Mr. Lum is very hard to understand on account of his thick accent and is just down right bad at explaining concepts to students. You will 100% need tutoring to pass his class. The only positive thing I can say about him is that he's kind of funny and didn't require our class to buy a textbook. I would not recommend his class to anybody.
I do not understand all the low ratings for Mr. Lum. I am taking him right now and he is hands down the best professor I have had at DVC. Yes he has a little accent but he's still very easy to understand if you actually pay attention. This is one of the few classes where I ACTUALLY understand the material as it was taught in class. Great professor.
Lectures often didn't stick for me, assigned a lot of homework, and based the entire grade of the homework off one or two problems he selects. Exams were fairly easy, often he'd rip one or two questions straight from the homework. Final was based off content we learned the lecture prior, and worth 30%. There are worst professors you could take.
Ended up having to take Professor Lum as I waited too long to pick my classes. I would like to start off by saying there are worse professors you could have. Quizzes are fairly straight forward. Biggest issue is homework. He assigns 4-5 hours 7 page homework and picks 3-4 problems to grade. if one of them are wrong instant C or D and waste of 4hrs.
Rambles = waste of time of lecture Very thick accent = hard to comprehend topic you might not know Whenever you ask a question in class = expects others to answer it for you HW = opposite yet relevant to class notes so show up or use outside sources Harsh grader for the smallest things Quiz every week - get tutoring, ask for help!!
This would have to be the worst professor I had. He would lecture by doing example problems and asks the class for the answers, expecting you to know the answers. Then, he gives homework and will grade you on a couple questions (randomly chosen) and is a very harsh grader. You are better off taking an online class and teaching yourself.
Fairly easy A, but overall not good. Lecture is ho-hum with very thick accent. Homework is super long, but he only grades a few problems and based on correctness. Insanely harsh grader, would mark off points for not doing the problem his way, or even for missing one or two words (wtf?)
Can't understand what bro is saying, hw is most of your grade
This class is super miserable. PLEASE do not take him if you want to learn. Lectures are not helpful at all and he has a heavy accent. You're better off learning off the textbook yourself. Like others have said, hw is unnecessarily long and graded harshly on correctness. you could only turn in hw in-person. worst math prof i had in my 2yrs at dvc
This isn't an exaggeration, the class was genuinely bad. The two-hour lectures were difficult to follow, and questions were often dismissed. The environment felt discouraging, and the workload was excessive. Be prepared to teach yourself, if you're not already too burnt out to try. I used to enjoy math, but this class completely changed that.
I can't really understand what he is saying , he has a thick accent. You can only turn in homework in person and there's quizzes almost every week. I don't recommend taking his class.
I took this professor for Differential Equations and wasn't disappointed. He's very laid back and focuses more on solving problems than explaining concepts. Homework and tests are straightforward. If you like a direct, solution-focused class with minimal theory, he's a great fit.
