This woman is the most straightforward teacher in the Bio Dept.-tells you what you have to know, then asks you for it on the tests. She's a funny lady if you can stay awake.
the must sleep-inducing class i have ever taken...
Don't be fooled by "open-book" tests-- they're H-A-R-D! She explains things well, but be sure you're doped up well on caffeine 'cuz she's not the greatest entertainer.
crystal clear lectures...by far the best "teacher" in the biology department
Extremely monotonous. Doesn't require you to buy that expensive genetics book. Her reader is all you need. Not too hard for a genetics course.
Best class I've ever taken. Monotonous voice, but clearly explains everything. Very straightforward, you know what to expect on the exams. Every one should take this class. TAKE IT!!!
Tons of information she expects you to know...test format is short answer and way too long...too much is required for a general ed class for non-science majors as far as I'm concerned. She's way boring too. Take Green for bio 10 if you can
Tests are insanely hard. 2 question multipart midterms that do not represent what a person knows. Sleep promoting lectures, sometimes grad students even teaching, which sucked. Grading is unfair. I didn't get the grade I deserved. Thumbs down.

She knows everything. I love this teacher. The book is not necessary, her notes are good enough. She is very interesting.
She gives clear lectures and has hard exams, but only because they require you to apply knowledge rather than memorize. The exams can be tricky.
Best teacher at UCSD. Yes she has a monotonous voice but she is not lacking in humor so I found her lectures enjoyable (didn't miss one). It was a thought provoking, powerful and informative class and the tests were super easy. Just study the notes.
This was supposed to be the easy A but instead she decided to be very picky and asked questions about little details in the text.
Easiest A I've ever gotten in a science class(AIDS science and society). Don't be fooled though, she's a good Prof. Her genetics class on the other hand was hell, but that's to be expected.
By far my favorite class at UCSD. ALthough her voice is very sleep provoking, the lectures are actually interesting, book is great, tests are easy, and shes pretty funny. Great class!
good class. her tests are very "technical," so you need to make sure you know how to answer it in ways that will score you points. but it's doable, you should pick it up after the 1st midterm. dry humor, which is amusing and entertaining
Her lectures are thorough, and she goes through and explains all the material very well. You don't need to buy the textbook, all you need is her reader. Her exams are insanely hard and long, even though they were open book. Hardest class I have ever taken
took her class over summer, it was considered one of the hard classes in the bio division. Good lecturer, but crazy midterms!
Took it as my first upper div class...1st midterm in week 3 with ~20 avg out of 40...top 50% of class gets a B, and you don't need to buy the textbook, just the reader from soft reserves, so that's nice, but make sure you go to lectures and take good notes, this class is as hard as it gets.
This class is so depressing. There is so much h/w and it's not representative of the exams. The exams are also twice as long as they should be. The average on the first midterm was 19.5/50. Luckily, she curves. Also, quite a bore in lecture. Don't take her.
Supposedly a hard class But I got an A with my eyes shut. The tests are open notes And I never went to class, I only did all the problems in the workbook (to which she provides solutions) and if you don't understand it just email her and she'll help you. If you work at all you'll be okay don't whine
Genetics is hard, esp. with Nesbitt. If it wasn't for her great curve i probably wouldn't have passed. A lot of hw and the tests are really long. Don't be fooled by the open book test policy, sometimes it doesn't really help. I heard that the avg. UCSD student takes 3 tries to pass genetics.
I like Genetics, and I have had it taught a binch of different ways, but I really liked her class. She was really thorough and will over the whole concept. Her were difficult, but there were no surprises. If she didn't cover it in lecture, than it she didn't on the test.
One of the only profs at ucsd that actually makes me want to go to lecture. She's fun and clear. I don't think the course was hard coz all I did was go to lecture and got a B whilst I barely pass most of my other classes
Her lectures seem kind of dry to me (especially at 8am), but she was clear on the concepts. The exams are excrutiatingly long but at least they're multiple choice. The only bad thing was she let the grad students teach a lecture and they had a little harder time teaching the concept.
Nesbitt's a very good lecturer - she explains the material clearly. However, her tests are REALLY hard, and if you don't understand all the concepts as well as she does, you won't do well on the test.
her lactures are very clear and easy to understand... but exams are unreasonably hard and long.. example in class is simple, but not the exam.. good thing is she curves... the average is around 19 out of 50 for the midterms..
Don't be fooled by this apparantly "easy A" class. There's one rule of thumb everybody should follow: If Nesbitt's teaching it, the class is going to be hard!
I've noticed people not liking Nesbitt, but I personally love her. She funny, and despite her monotone voice, proves to be quite interesting. Her midterms and final are fair (a little challenging though). Definitely one of my recommended professors.
This class is hard-especially if it's your first quarter in your first year. Her lectures are clear but her tests and homework are quite difficult (curve helps). I would have done much better had I gone to sections. But other than that, she's hilarious and it was a rather enjoyable class.
Very interesting class. You have to put answers on midterms/finals exactly what she says in lectures and then some. She is very picky about answers. I liked the subject and lectures but didn't really like the exams. Don't take her for genetics!
this class is as much political as it is science. the exams are hard because you have to answer the way she presented/believes, even open-ended questions are meant for you to answer a particular way. But i did learn how pathetic humanity is...
Will probably understand the material second time around. Exams are not meant to be finished I suppose. Class average usually about 50% of total score.
Eww Eww. DO NOT TAKE HER!! She is evil. Her tests are freaking hard, and no matter how much you study, your going to get murdered by her tests! The class is suppose to be enjoyable and she took the fun out of it for me. grr
The lectures are long, but not too bad. Lecture notes online. Test was okay, too many questions based on "web investigations." She also drew the phospholipid bilayer inside out....
Although the class can get pretty boring, the prof is good at explaining herself. Don't buy the book for this class, it's useless. The tests are very very hard and curve does little for your grade, so unless you take this P/NP I would recommend going to the optional office hours if you want an A.
I got a 44/50 on the midterm. That was the highest score in the class! Its not that hard. I didn't even study all that much. What are you weirdos talking about! She uses too many undefined terms in her lectures. I'll give you that much.
Lectures are quite boring, but she puts lecture notes online. Don't bother buying the book for this class, it's completely useless, just go to the book's website and everything is there. Her tests are really hard, you really have to know the material. There is a curve, and that can really help you as long as some genuis doesn't offset it! =P
Loved this class. Nesbitt is very very clear on what she teaches and tests on in this class. Lectures are really good, although she is monotone. Tests are fair and come straight from the workbook problems.
OMG SHE'S SOOOO BORING. The class is hard for a non-science major's science class. Hopefully there's another teacher who teaches this.
One of the best UD Bio classes I have taken!!! The material was FASCINATING and because I mostly agree with her political views, that aspect was great too. However, if are extremely conservative, you probably will take offense to this class because you need to explain things on the exam the way she wants it and she is very liberal!
Prof. Nesbitt proves that monotone teacher is not always bad. She was funny and clear on her lectures and I must admit this is my favorite class this quarter. Her tests are based on lecture and there are a lot of painful memorizations. Yet her final is curved so I ended up getting an A- (I got a 58/100 on the final). She's great. Highly recommended
She's got a dry wit and, w/her monotone voice, you actually need to pay attn to catch it. Loved that we only had to buy a reader when I took it. So long as you do the problems over and over and know how to work through them, the class is fine. She's pretty logical about the whole thing.
Her lectures were pretty clear and were helpful for trying to do the homework. Exams are based on practice and logic, so you have to do the homework. Good thing the class is curved :).
this teacher is a nazi!!! very hard, but you learn a lot, and she is very nice..... she does look like a man tho, even though she never wears a bra and has saggy****... so don't be alarmed
She is very monotone but interesting. Tests are graded too hard.

you will not get a high score on her tests. but you will pass with a B if you find the material intriguing. test questions are quantitative studies that require you to know the concepts and how to manipulate them into data. so don't just memorize stuff. do
she looks like janet reno and gets all giddy about sexual dysfucntion
Like someone else said, very monotone, but she does throw jokes in there here and there. Tests are straightforward--when I took it, it was open note, open book.

Excellent teacher, although she seems to get a bit peeved when answering questions. Tests are difficult if you don't prepare, so PREPARE. do the reading and problems and you should be fine.
this is the hardest teacher i have ever had at ucsd. the average for the first midterm was 17/50. that speaks for itself. don't take her if u want to keep ur gpa from descending. i guess in the end, people got higher averages, but honestly, its not worth it. most of her test questions r not like practice problems. she always ends up throwing u a cu
Good class. Prof. Nesbitt is VERY monotone but the topic is fascinating. It's not the easiest class, but definitely worth taking.
Nesbitt is extremely monotone and boring, however her notes are excellent and her tests are very fair as they come directly from her notes. If you memorize her notes, you have an A. The subject matter is also extremely fascinating.. the best class that I have taken at UCSD!
Everyone seems to be scared of this class but honestly it is not that bad. Sure, the tests are insane but the curve is generous so it doesn't matter. She explains the material really well so as long as you go to class, you'll be fine.
HARDEST CLASS IN MY WHOLE LIFE.TEST ARE INSANELY TRICKY,I MEAN SHE DOESNT TRY TO TRICK YOU SHE DOES TRICK YOU.I DONT GET THE POINT OF MAKING THE CLASS THIS HARD BECAUSE AS HARD AS IT IS,I DONT THINK ANY ONE WOULD BE ABLE TO LEARN THE MATERAIL AS WELL AS SHE EXCPECT YOU TO.NO MATTER HOW HARD ONE STUDIES, CHANCES ON DOING WELL ON THE EXAM IS SLIM.
The hardest class in my whole life. Test are extremely insane,i mean she doest try to trick you she DOES trick you. I dont understand why the class is extremely hard beacuse no one would be able to learn the material as well as she want in 10 weeks. Very discouriging no matter how hard one studies chances are very slim in doing well on her exams.
She made genetics so so hard. she is a good teacher but I don't think the tests should be around a forty percent and then just hand out good grades. She is really nice though.
Her tests are almost impossible but the curve makes up for it. I like her lecturing style. It is monotone but she still has a sense of humor. If you study hard you can do well in this class.
Really stupid teacher when it comes to tests. Had her for genetics too, and she was the same. To sum up, the final stats were as such, even numbers of people in all ranges (total points), with a mean of 83 (out of 200, high 165), and standard deviation of 57!!!! That should NEVER be. She likes to test what you dont know, not what you do. @#$!
Her tests are hard, but straight forward and thankfully curved. Questions are straight from lecture, but she will test you on the minutia. Know your stats info, know the general population dynamics, know the symptoms. Fear the short answer format test. Her lectures are funny if you're awake; she's got a monotone more sleep-inducing than Nyquil.
Take another Genetics teacher if you can. Tests are nothing like homework and lectures don't help when doing the homework..you either get it or don't. Don't listen to the people who give her smiley faces because they are abnormal nerds that mislead the innocent. Curve is generous but who cares when you are barely passing the tests.B oo for Nesbitt!
omg, the class was soooo hard. she isn't a bad teacher, but she makes genetics sooooo flippin' hard. take the other prof if u can =/
Plain & simple: Take someone else. If u do take her, I recommend going to many discussions and doing ALL the h.w. and ALL the practice exams. Grade is based on ONE EXAM and FINAL EXAM. Everything is open book but keep in mind that the exam and final problems are not like the h.w. so book & notes don't help much. Try to understand not memorize.
Clear and straightforward. Office hours are helpful (if you know what you're asking). If you thought she was hard, try taking Brody...
She teaches very clearly, but exams have nothing to do with the lecture. I do not recommend taking her class if you want an A!
She her tests are real hard. You have to study and do the practice problems!!!!
This woman is devil-spawn. Well not really but if you haven't taken stats, don't take her class. I seriously thought she was testing my mathematical abilities rather than my knowledge of genetics. It's one thing to have to figure out the probability of possessing a gene but when that's all there is...get real lady!
Nesbitt is clear and concise, helpful during O.H. Hwk and reading are realistic to finish(~ 2-3 hours a week). Don't have to buy the book like with Brody, so you save ~$200. Exams are reasonable, just like hwk/practice midterms. Online forum with T.A.s to answer questions quickly. You get to drop one midterm or half the final.
For BILD 10 Nesbitts tests are cake IF you know what to study for. She tests on all the little facts she covers in her examples etc., in lectures. I don't usually do this but I found making flash cards of all the diseases, etc., really helped for studying.
I seriously love this woman. Her lectures are extremly clear and concise, and she actually keeps my attention. You don't have to buy the book, and she puts the lecture notes online, so you can even get by w/o attending lecture. (I did neither and aced both midterms). She is also very helpful and accomedating during O.H. I'd definitly rec. her.
Good lecturer but unbelievably difficult tests. Honestly, the tests don't evaluate how much you've learned, they're nitpicky questions that test how well you could memorize useless details. Odd facts like percents and frequency or random events in the 600 page book are often the subject of her questions. Horrible professor.
I really liked this class, you learn a lot of interesting things. Nesbitt's lectures are pretty interesting and easy to follow and the notes are posted online. However, her tests are retarded. You never know what random detail she will ask, so you have to memorize practically everything. Her grading is also really strict.
On par with physical chemistry in terms of difficulty. Actually, its probably even harder. Didn't learn anything cause I was busy memorizing test answers. Don't take her.
thought she was very clear and concise. tells you what you need to know and no more. people say she's hard, but she's not bad. I think her tests are easier than her homework, so just do the homework. oh and look at her practice exams. the questions will be pretty similar. tests are multiple choice, which is good or bad depending on you.
I worked my ass off to memorize stupid statistics and other tidbits of useless information that she has on the test to no avail. The class is interesting and has great information but her tests are the worst ones I've ever taken at UCSD. If you value your GPA, don't take this class with her!!!!
SNORE. she actually put me to sleep on the floor of the lecture hall. lectures read directly out of the workbook, so you don't need to go. doing all of the homework didn't prepare me for her tests. the exam more or less threw all of that out the window. no matter how much you prepare for her tests, you always fail, even if you understand the mat'l.
bild 10 with nesbitt is a breeze so long as you follow these guidelines: 1) go to lecture and take notes; if not, study and KNOW her lecture notes she provides online. 2) if she makes a point to go a little off topic, write it down to study for exam. she is a great teacher so long as you are a decent student. also, very dry sense of humor :)
yeah, its obvious by now that this class is the hardest thing on planet earth HOWWWWEVVVEEEERRR!! i MUST call a spade a spade meaning that she is an INCREDIBLY, excellent, awesome, teacher i really don't think that any professor could teach genetics as well as she can this is from a person who has had to take her class f over and over and O
she is awesome. knowledgable. ppl who really value their education would really take her class instead of always wanting the easy way out of getting an easy prof for a class. she is kinda tough. but i learned a lot from her. youre in ucsd guys, suck it up
Explains material clearly and concisely (although monotonously). No need to buy text, just use workbook. Allows use of notes and text on exams. Be sure to work on old exams in preparation for tests.
Her lectures are interesting, concise, and sometimes, even entertaining. Her tests involve quite a lot of math and logical thinking, but they are not particularly difficult, even though the average tends to be on the low side. Old exams put online are very useful.
I thought she was a really good teacher with an interesting sense of humor. Very helpful in office hours, and her lecture notes were extremely detailed and helpful. fun and interesting class.
Dr. Nesbitt is a great professor and kept my attention for 3 hours during the summer session. She is clear, concise, well organized, with a hint of sharp cynical humor. BICD136 is a very interesting topic and is worth studying. There are a lot of videos and a massive book to read...so make sure to READ the assigned text.
If you've ever dropped the soap in the shower in prison, you'll be able to understand what her midterms feel like.
Really good professor, hard class. Harder than metabolic biochem and ochem put together. But WHY WHY WHY did you let your TA teach chapter 6 today in one class. It was so hard to follow her and I probably understood 10% of it.
After reading a few of the previous comments I was cringing to have to take her. SHE IS GREAT!!!! Iono what happened, but she is a great teacher! She is clear and to the point and doesnt waste your time! She makes a horrifically boring topic fairly interesting and she can keep your attention. She takes A LOT of questions from her old exams!!!
She became interesting this quarter around for some odd reason and a lot clearer than compared to last spring quarter when i dropped her class. so it really depends on when you get her and how she feels like teaching her class at that moment; the second half of the subject material itself is harder than the first half, but she's there if u need her
Dr. Nesbit delivers clear and concise lectures. Her work book, however, is overly confusing and frustrating to go through, as are her exams, which are of a much greater difficulty than what she presents in lecture. Don't let the open-book midterms fool you, this class is very hard. I recommend the alternative professor for BICD100.
Nesbitt is one of the BEST teachers here at UCSD. The workbook is NOT confusing at all, just go to lecture and follow along...you should be FINE. Just as long as you promise to attend every lecture and keep up with the problems, EASY A guaranteed. The curve will be low thanks to idiots who think cramming the night before will save them.
Probably one of the best but hardest teacher at UCSD. I wes definately challenged, but I really liked the class because instead of just memorizing stuff, you're actually doing something that requires some thinking. She explains things really well. One advice would be to go to office hour and find a good TA/section.
Professor Nesbitt's lectures are interesting and holds your attention, and she is very clear and concise. However, her tests are horrific. Even if you do all her practice problems in the workbook, her test questions are somehow different enough to confuse you. The final seemed a little bit easier but it might be because I studied A LOT for it.
Nesbitt has a ridiculously monotone voice, but it makes the handful of jokes she tells funny. Class is ridiculously interesting, there was no text book which I actually wish there had been. Exams are difficult, and make up 100% of your grade. Don't expect to do that well.
Wonderful professor. Very interesting material. Tests are definitely challenging. Section/good TA is VERY helpful. Doing HW is absolutely necessary. Lectures are helpful. Too bad Nesbitt is retiring after the fall quarter. Even tho she was challenging, she was also one of the best professors and one of the best classes I've taken.
Nesbitt was such a great professor. Just like everyone else said, she was clear, concise, and her workbook was amazing...straight to the point. I loved the way she taught. I liked the way she snuck in jokes here and there. They were hilarious. Lecture kept my attention.
Least expensive BICD 100 class (only need to by the $12 reader) yet probably the toughest BICD 100 class. Very challenging/ thought provoking class, but as long as you did the reader and test problems, you were prepared as anybody else would be. Shame she's not teaching any more, because her class, and I can't believe I'm writing this, was fun.
excellent professor, very helpful if you go to office hours, hard exams, but it's curved...
Looking back, even tho this class was ridiculously hard, I learned more from her than any other bio class. She was an amazing lecturer.
hard genetics professor. Multiple choice exams go from A-P. Do not take genetics with her if you want to get a good grade. I wish i did.
I was so sad when I heard she was retiring. Although she's still teaching in summer session, so I would highly recommend taking her (it's worth losing out on a few rays of sunshine). I had her for BICD 100 & 136, and she really teaches you things. That was 2+ years ago, and I still remember it all!
I took this class in the summer, it was fast and challenging but also very do-able. Open note and open book tests were really helpful. I would recommend making a formula sheet. If you need help, go to as many sections as you need to in order to understand. Also, do the homework and practice midterms and finals. If you work hard, you can do well.
Professor Nesbitt is very good! Her lectures are clear and concise. She also provides a short reader so that you don't have to go through the textbook. Her class is extremely math-based so be prepared! Exams are VERY hard, with a series of questions having to do with one another so be careful not to make a stupid mistake because it WILL hurt you!
Tough genetics professor. Very thorough and cracks jokes here and there but if you want to get a good grade and actually comprehend the material, take it with someone else.
My choice for 1st or 2nd favorite professor at UCSD. I took every class this woman offered while I was there. She is not going to give you a warm, fuzzy feeling, but she is a great teacher with a wicked sense of humor. And you will learn from her.
Muriel Nesbitt is the best professor that ever existed at UCSD. I had her for 4 classes and got an A or an A+ in every one. She helped me get into medical school and figure out what I want to do with my life. Also, she is hilarious. Sarcastic, cynical, and way to the left, just like a bio professor should be. Does anyone know where she went?
Had her for 4 classes (basically everything she taught). Love her, LOVE her. Her tests were hard, but lecture based, and the curve was super generous. She's dry and hilarious, but speaks in a monotone ala Ben Stein. So her voice might lull you to sleep, and then you'll miss the most awesome/wrong/dirty joke ever.
Tests are hard! Grading based on a curve can be deceptive!! If you have a choice and need to take genetics, take another professor. That is my best advice.
