Horrible! Save yourself the trouble and take Michael Moses.
Can be difficult to understand. Doesn't collect the homework, gives tons of tests and qiuzzes. Not great, not terrible.
Really understanding person. Very good teacher, although very very boring. Easy to get a good grade. Five quizes, two midterms and final.
Spare yourself any extra difficulty and take Michael Moses' class, who is much easier.
Very difficult, and often very rude when answering questions in class. A perfect example of what's wrong with tenure.
This is the easiest math course I have ever taken! He is really funny and very nice...
I took 2 semesters of Calc and a semester of Stat in h.s., and this course was a nightmare: you can't understand Gupta who is EXTREMELY unhelpful and gives no partial credit if you miscalculate on matrices!
Worst of the already bad math department. Difficult to understand. Over-assigns homework and has unpredictable test questions. Panders to students who have already taken AP Calculus and leaves everyone else behind. A "business" course that's rea
Fairly clear to understand, but very difficult
Not the easiest to understand, and as a teacher, he sucks. Do not take him.
Hard to understand, if you don't have background on the topic then you'll get lost. Is a little intolerant of stupid questions. Grades hard. Midterms take forever to finish. No calculators for the first half of the semester.
Crazy hard material, but a nice professor. Likes to make puns and small jokes in class, fairly entertaining. Work hard and study hard - he has hard tests and is not that leniant on grading, but he is a great help in office hours if you go.
Very Unclear and very Unhelpful. Seems like he just does not want to help students.
he's just OKAY. go to class and do some of the hw and you'll be alright. but he won't make you love math or anything special. pretty boring.
A very engaging and insightful professor. Not an easy class, but one in which you will actually learn. Most students complain that GW is not in the top 50--he will push us closer. Teaches like an Ivy League professor would. Great class.
The worst class I have taken at GW. The material is very difficult to grasp, nad his boring teaching style does not help. Only counts a tests and a final towards your total grade, so if you mess up any, you are completely screwed
He is great!!!!!
he is awesome..his test mite be difficult but u understand a lot of math whihc may help you in your future math courses..teaches like an ivy league proffessor would have..this class is not for students who are lazy fools and who do not want to attend classes..
this class is not for people who don't want to put in some effort. you have to go to class, and you should do the homework. if you just keep up with the work (and its not that much) you will be fine. study for the tests. theyre not tricky, but theyre not incredibly easy. the quizzes are very easy.
Excellent professor! The best course I have taken at GW.
He is a really nice guy with a good sense of humor. He explains everything really clearly and is always willing to help. Calc is hard and that will always be true but this is one of the better math classes I have taken here.
It's true that GW's math professors usually suck, and he is probably the better of them (that's just how bad the math department here is). But in short, he could care less about his students and their performance in his class.
It's definitely one of the best classes I have taken so far at GW. He knows the material very well. His explanations are clear. Seriously, the material itself is hard, but he made his tests quite easy. Just do the homework, and you will do fine. Excellent professor!
Take this course. I got a 102 as my final grade. If you like math and you're willing to try a slight bit, this is the class for you. Although Gupta doesn't change grades even if you ask him about them, the course is still do-able
He does not really care about his students and their performance in the class. He does not curve the grades (even when the average is failing). However, he does do an adequate job of explaining the concepts of calculus. His tests are very long and I always felt very rushed.
I am a math major, and this man (i thought) was very difficult. He does not care about his students at all. He answers questions with other questions. His tests are long and hard. Make sure you do all of the homework and take ALL of the quizzes and you may pass. I failed, retook it the following summer and passes w/ an A+. good luck
Do NOT take his class! Last semester, the class average was a D. He is a bad lecturer and even though he tells students to drop by his office for help, he is NOT helpful at all. Instead, he is rude and condescending & you end up feeling lost. He also tries to trick students on tests. Also, whoever said he teaches "ivy league" style is dead wrong.
Great professor! GW is full of whiny students who expect A's to be handed to them on a silver platter. Go to any Ivy League school and you'll find professors like Dr. Gupta.
Never went to class because his lectures are worthless to me (i took two years of calc before). His test questions are generally easy but he takes off a RIDICULOUS amounts of points for mistakes. Always complains about students throwing away their tuition money by skipping class. It's rather annoying. HW is very helpful, though not collected.
Something is deffinately wrong with this class. I am student who has way of finding how to get an A in any class. This class is an exception. Both exams I thought I aced. He gave me two big fat C's. How is this possible? He most likely recieves terrible student evaluations and I hope he is fired.
Was just a miserable guy. The class is super easy, the problem is that he's a tough grader. I lost 20 points on a problem I got the right answer for, which is costing me an A. His questions are also worded confusingly and he refuses to clarify. He'll also include stuff on quizes not covered in lectures. He makes the class much harder than it is.
The material is hard and you need to study a lot to do well. Tests are fairly hard and he takes a lot of points off for simple mistakes. You are required to explain yourself on all questions. Very helpfull in office hours. This is not an easy class and do not go in expecting to get an A, however you will learn a lot. No curves on any graded wor
horrible professor!!! He takes off points a lot by a small mistake. Even if you show all of your works and solve the problem in a right way, you could end up getting nothing by 1 mistake (write the wrong number, mistake in calculation, etc). What's the point of showing works then? Math shouldn't be graded only by the answer. Avoid it!
Tough grader. Although I got a B+ in the end but I was one of the top 5 or less throughout the sem and I really was expecting an A. Boring class in general and miserable style of teaching which reminds me of middle school. Poor English speaking as well which really doesn't help students to understand what's going on.
Good teacher but tough grader. He covers everything in detail and brings in outside material to supplement his class. You have to get the answers right on his tests to get a good grade because he gives little partial credit. Grade is based on quizzes (10%) 2 midterms (25%) and final (40%). Does not curve, but will give some extra for homework.
I had a 95% average in this class. I thought he was a pretty good professor and the class overall wasn't too difficult. My TA sucked but the material isn't too hard to understand.
Gupta is a really hard grader. Don't take his class. Gurski is so much nicer/ better i had her last semester. Basically, Gupta sucks.
I think he ties, but he just doesn't know how to be helpful to his students. He's too rigid and aloof. Sometimes, he'd get frustrated at the class for not understanding but would be even more frustrated when asked to explain the material again.
A sweet guy who tries-- I took his Dean's Seminar and it was just boring. He does try to keep the class engaged, and he genuinely wants you to do well. Your success just depends on how much you like the subject.
He is an awful teacher and mean. I had to teach myself stuff because he skipped them. ?Trust me thats what it equals,? you cant say that in math. He is a strict grader, even if the mistake doesnt relate to understanding material. He wastes time teaching the stupid point, and skips the main part of a problem. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Great class!! You will learn a lot. GW students tend to be lazy and expect material to be handed to them. If you work hard, you will do well.
This class was tough but I definitely learned a lot. I would suggest you attend class EVERY DAY if you expect to do well or even just want to get a decent grade. He responds to e-mail questions really quickly and is helpful if you need something clarified after class. Class average was a 68.66 going into the exam.
The class average was a D+ so that should tell you something. His accent also makes him VERY difficult to understand. I went to him for extra help after a bad exam score and his response was along the lines of "try harder".. uh ok. I would not recommend him at all! Stay away!! GPA KILLER!!! I might loose my scholarship because of this ONE class.
The material in Linear Alg is a lot of definitions. He goes over the material so much in class that he makes it more confusing than it already is. As long as you understand the concepts the class will be easy. He often teaches stuff that is not on the test so be sure to ask what material is on the test. I recomend going to class.
worst teacher i've had at gw. he's nice enough but does not care how his students do. hard grader. no structured format to class. complete GPA sinker. i do not recommend.
No complaints here. He used a lot of linear algebra in class, which I hadn't taken yet, but was really happy to work with me. Has very high standards, but if you do the work, you're going to go through one of the better teachers in the math department unscathed.
I received an A in his class after doing terrible on the midterm. He is an excellent professor. Some people just expect good grades to come easily. You definitely have to work hard for a good grade but little studying is involved if you go to class. Also, the homework is not hard and brings up your grade and he does an excellent job so you learn.
never take this professor He is a extremely tough grader
You will be doing yourself a huge favor by avoiding taking a class with Prof Gupta. I had a great GPA until I took his class- even after working hard, nothing. Extremely tough grader, doesn't seem to care if his students do well at all, not clear, and boring during lectures. Worst professor I have had at GW.
Abysmal. He might have been a mathematician once, but he clearly isn't anymore. He fails to understand basic concepts even when you sit down and explain it to him. He only understands a small number of ways to do a problem, and will give you no points if you do it a different way. One of the worst profs I ever had.
Great professor and a great guy. Helped me get into his class after the Registrar screwed up my registration. Extremely helpful and cares about his students. The GW math department isn't extremely strong but he is definitely one of the better professors.
Does a great job of explaining the material, but the exams are a little harder than they should be and count for 70% of the final grade (midterm is 30% and final is 40%).
recitation is mandatory because he gives pop quizzes at random. class is not, but he is helpful is explaining things. he is very willing to talk to you, but he gives practically no partial credit on the 2 exams we have, midterm and final. exams were fair, but with no partial credit, i received a much lower score than i should have had.
As a math major, I felt the material in this course was poorly taught. I spent most of the semester learning from outside materials and teaching myself. The professor is an unreasonably harsh grader, and gives very little partial credit for homeworks and exams.
Horrible professor. complete GPA killer. he does not explain well, gives tough homework (for which you will not receive partial credit) and is useless during office hours. avoid at all costs!
Took differential equations with Gupta last fall. Started off being completely confused, but a few office hours sessions set me right on track. Stay on top of homework and go to office hours--he is very helpful outside of class! Definitely possible to do very well if you try.
Does not explain his grading for the homework, which is 50% of the total grade, lectures are fairly well organized but also fairly boring.
He has some good lecture notes, and this is the only good thing about him. If you think you can learn Matlab, latex, or maple with a book by yourself, don't take the class. If you need someone to teach you, find someone else.
He is super unclear about what he wants, and the office hour doesn't help at all! The only thing you can learn from is the class note. The lecture is useless. Definitely hard grader. Deduct points with no reason! Ridiculous project at the end of semester that no one knows how to do
Taking this class is the biggest waste of my life. Matlab and maple are basic tools for computation and Engineering etc, you DON'T sit in a classroom to learn the how to use the tools!Latex is completely useless. You can achieve the same much easier with Word and other math symbol typers. Also, Prof Gupta gives the most boring lectures on earth.
he definitely knows nothing about teaching a class!!! his class is no use at all, and the lecture is just reading from the material. never teaches anything useful, the lecture and the homework and quiz has nothing related!!! definitely do not take his class ever and ever!!!! the worst teacher in this University!!!
1. He does not understand a thing about what he's teaching; 2. He does not understand your codes either; 3. Constantly asks for help from the student next to him and 'his old friend'--google; 4. Takes points off for no reason he could explain; 5. Read directly from class notes he posts; 6. Can't prepare you ready for anything.
Not the most cogent lecturer and a very harsh grader on homework assignments and exams. That said, perseverance can enable you to do well in his course. Just be sure to rely on Paul's Online Notes as a quintessential supplement to his lectures (which are incidentally copied and pasted from your textbook). Eastern style of teaching/grading.
Not a good lecturer at all, harsh grader, and made the class extremely theory based to the point you would just have to memorize everything and hope for the best. Tests were very difficult and he refused to curve or even let kids use formula sheets during the exam. If you're not a math major or naturally good at understanding theory avoid him!
He is extremely lecture heavy. However, hes just reading from slides that arent even his! When he goes off script, he just confuses the class. He knows what the topic is but hes not good at articulating anything. It feels like hes still stuck in 1972. Theres no curve too and he LOVES saying it too. Avoid him. Hes not mean just a bad professor
the quizzes are hard because he only gives 20min for 5-6 long problems, but they only count for 5% each(and he drops the lowest one), and you have much more time for exams, which are 30% each. most people are not doing well but honestly as long as you understand material and study your notes you'll be fine
Gupta is a nice guy, but you should avoid ODE at all costs with him if you can. He teaches off of the slides that the texbook publisher made, and when he strays from the slides, he's confusing. He give NO PARTIAL CREDIT on exams at all. There are 7 HWs, a midterm, and a final; if you bomb the midterm and have mediocre HW, he won't help you out.
Gives you too many questions without enough time to do them since you cant use a calculator
Worst math professor I've ever had. Doesn't allow use of a calculator, often messes up calculations in class but expects you to be perfect.
I thought this class was going to be like a Calculus class I took in high school, but no. Professor Gupta truly is the worst teacher I have ever had as he never provided any reasoning for grades and even though I went to all the classes and his office hours, still did not do great on midterm or final. RIP to whoever has to take him next year.
Gupta's idea of teaching is to read the textbook's provided slides while waving his hands around in front of the class as if the students have come in to class knowing the material. Anything that becomes difficult for him to describe is ultimately left out of the lecture. There is also no curve in the class.
Linear algebra: Gupta does nothing to inspire students: reading straight off slides, he teaches computations and definitions s.t. when students like myself try to employ intuition he fails to understand our thought process. Neglects any curiosities you have in topics not directly addressed in the textbook. 3Blue1Brown will be your best friend.
Had to drop this class bc after a 51% average on the midterm, he refused to curve and would not help ANYONE. I know like 16 other people who dropped. Material would've been fine with some sympathy and help. He's so unclear
You'll acquire next-level independent study skills - a real gem!
Midterm: 30%, final: 40%. Most people skip lecture as it's hard to follow - read textbook instead. Quite tough on partial credit on exams. That said, he tests on less than the material covered and is clearly a very fair grader who cares about students succeeding (also has no curve, but drops lowest quiz and HW). TA is incredibly helpful.
As head of the GW math department, one would expect a professor who is knowledgeable about Linear Alg and able to help students learn Linear Alg. Half the class dropped after the first midterm, and the professor did not curve the class at all. Professor failed to discuss the fundamental theorem of linear algebra. Save yourself the mental headache.
It's the end of the semester and I couldn't tell you what linear algebra actually is - so that's all you need to know. Class is extremely dry and heavily based on theorems. Gupta was easier on us due to online though, which was nice.
Gupta is a very caring guy and a great teacher. Linear algebra is a tough class, and he spends a lot of time teaching theory. HW40%, Midterm30%, Final30%. No curve. Again, its a difficult class but Gupta explains things very well for conceptual learners. Make good friends with your TA, it will help a lot. Study hard and youll do fine.
Professor Gupta was very sweet, but wasn't a great teacher. His lectures were boring and not all too helpful when he was reading from slides made by the textbook. When he showed his own notes, however, I found that quite helpful. If you need to take this class it's not terrible, just probably won't be your favorite.
Gupta is a nice man but I did not like his class. He gives weekly homework, multiple quizzes with the TA, a midterm, and a final. His tests are similar to the quizzes which is great. He takes off points for very minimal things though. The online textbook was very helpful and sometimes was easier to learn from. He teaches very fast.
Professor Gupta was pretty average. His lectures are super boring and not worth attending. The online weekly homework was fine but long and tiring. The quizzes were easy but the TA could not answer any questions besides on the few questions he presented. I would suggest doing well on quizzes and exams, but not attend if youre good at maths.
He's like an adorable grandpa who really loves & is excited about math, but is a tad oblivious to the length of his exams. I think the weekly homework was manageable and not too difficult. His lectures were basically from the textbook. Course content was comparable to stuff I learned freshman year of high school (not calc). Quizzes every other week
I'm not sure why Gupta has a bad rating. His class is a bit boring, but he's an average professor and he's a nice person. He's willing to help and his expectations are fair. His final and midterm are hard to finish on time. 6 quizzes in total, quizzes every other week. HW due once a week. The TA really carried me through this class though.
Gupta himself is a very sweet and caring professor, I just wish that these qualities extended to the way his class is run. There really is no great way to study and if you don't have a great TA you're kind of boned. I recommend using online resources to teach yourself the material because you're not going to learn much in lecture.
-he's very rude and tends to avoid questions in class. He also doesn't communicate well with the TA. He's apparently better than Moses but probably not by much. Homeworks are fine and quizes are fine but the midterm... was demonic and long. TAKE OUTSIDE OF GW. He cannot teach to save his life and he doesn't care if you do well or not.
His lectures are boring and hard to understand. The quizzes are highly dependent on the TA. Homework is easy and online. The midterm was the hardest exam I've ever taken. Extremely long and not remotely related to the homework or quizzes. Take this class somewhere else!
Lectures are very boring, and very hard to understand. The homeworks and quizzes are easy, but then when it comes to the test it's very hard and different from what we have learned. His teaching style is very hard to understand. He just sort of talks and doesn't write much on the board.
This professor absolutely does not care about his students. Also very rude at times.
Very bad teacher, worse than expected
Plz take this class outside of GW. The HW and quizzes are 40% of the total grade and are very easy . The exams are graded sooo harshly and he doesn't believe in partial credit. He does not provide a study guide or practice midterm/ final. He is truly bad lecturer, it is so hard to follow. Save yourself and take elsewhere the exams r way too hard.
Professor Gupta obviously knows what he is talking about. He does not know how to teach it well, however. In class, he answers questions vaguely and makes the person asking them feel stupid. For that same reason, he is unapproachable outside of class. In testing, he gives no partial credit, which is unfair in a math class. He also grades very slow.
Gupta is a horrible lecturer and doesn't provide sufficient materials / information for exams. The class average for the midterm was in the low 60s and he refused to curve. As a result, the math department had to intervene. However, Moses is so much worse. If possible, take this course over the summer.
Idk why he has bad reviews, I'm not great at math but if you actually go to class and do the hw, the class is so straight forward. He walks you through every concept and answers questions in the middle of lecture. This class is basically high school algebra. Idk how he is for other classes but I would totally take him for finite math.
Has a personal no calculators rule if you take this course with him whereas no such rule exists with the other professors. He gives no extra credit or curve under any circumstances, says that alot. Often was short with students who asked questions. Had 6 Quizzes which would cover large spans of information in only a few questions each.
The midterm is weighed equally to the final. Crams a bunch of topics into the midterm to the point where it is almost impossible to finish. His definition of a "curve" is adding 5 points to an extremely difficult exam. Linear Algebra is very abstract and requires critical thinking. You don't have time to think on his exams. Just avoid if possible.
There is no curve or calculator on any exam. If you want an easy A, then take this class with another professor. However, if you want to have a solid understanding of Linear Algebra by the time you finish the semester, Professor Gupta is for you. Getting an A requires you to spend significant time outside of class reading the textbook, so beware.
Rest in peace to a real one.
