do NOT take this professor if you can avoid it. it will make your semester very stressful.
I made an A in physics in high school. This is the worst class ever and had to drop it. He throws an equation on the board and conceptually explains it. This does you no good when 50% of the points from his exam are mathematically. I personally could not learn a thing from him. I recommend taking it in the summer.
Gives study guides about what will be on the test. Study them. I got As on all my tests. Overly cheerful though.
worst class i've ever take. i loved physics in highschool so i decided id take a class in college. worst idea ever! more than half of the class failed some of his tests and he decided not to curve it...
If you are interested in physics, do not take the class. If you want to get an A, do not choose this class. If you do not want to fail,,,,,,,,,
It's very hard to comprehend the professor. He's nice and helpful though.
Way too happy. He is very, very, very annoying. Don't take this class. Find another professor. Just spare yourself the trouble
I hated the way he taught the material with powerpoint which he rushed entirely too much! Majority of the class failed the exams which were very difficult. He does not teach the material well at all! Do NOT take him if possible.
If you want to attend every class, do all the homework, read the book and still fail the tests then this is the class for you. He lectures entirely too fast to even begin to comprehend what is expected of you. Also for a 101 class not designed for physics major he expected way to much prior knowledge. I would take another teacher if possible.
Not helpful at all.
He seems like a nice guy and I believe he tries to help his students. But he isn't good at helping. He gives a 2.5 points extra credit all semester and homework is very difficult and takes many hours each week. Probably would not take him again.
Terrible, terrible tests, doesnt explain, and expects you to know everything.
I have tried several times to email him. His emails are always snarky, sarcastic, and never helpful. The homework website is rubbish. Silverstone refuses to fix it--or even acknowledge that anything is wrong with it. He answers questions in class with rude answers.
This is the WORST class I have ever taken at the University of Alabama. He doesn't even know how to work his own problems!!! He is no help outside of class. When you try to get help he sends you to the help center. The only thing he can tell you on how to be successful is to read, rework problems in chapter, study 14 hours a week ... but still FAIL
DO NOT TAKE. The only teacher I have not enjoyed at Alabama. Will lecture the full 1hr 15 mins. Never has a day off, even Thanksgiving week or dead week. Way too much hw and work for a 101 class. Plus he is horribly boring. Tests are impossible. Terrible.
Dr. Silverstone is always happy and passionate about his job. However, he often does not know what he is talking about and makes mistakes in teaching the information. His lectures do not help you to learn the material, but he does offer extra credit if you are in class and he puts a large curve on his tests. Read the book and go to class!
DO NOT TAKE. Terrible teacher. Tests are impossible. Crams way too much into his class. Hardest class I have taken at Alabama.
This class was very hard. He has trouble explaining the material, but its difficulty might stem from the difficult nature of the class. The homework came from a different textbook than the one we had to buy, and it was almost impossible to do well on without a chegg account or using yahoo answers. The participation grade will save your grade.
What people are saying is true. Dr Silverstone is hard, but also very generous. He gives extra credit and helps as much as he can. To say he doesn't know what he's talking about is complete stupidity. That being said, there is a lot of information within this one class and not enough time to process it and homework is immensely hard.
This was my absolute last class at the capstone and received a D+ when I needed a C- to finish my degree and be done. Went and spoke to him with no luck. He said its ultimately my fault because i didn't do enough. When I sought tutoring outside of class and from classmates and used physics for dummies. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Too bad!!
By far the hardest and worst teacher on campus. all of the class averages on tests were in the 50's and he said it was our fault. I have never made anything but A's before this class and i had to drop it. Plus his emails are always rude and sarcastic. Do not take.
Probably the hardest teacher in PH105 class. He just read books, doesn't teach anything. His practice test and real test are totally different. Try do anything avoid him
Avoid him, if you take this class be prepared to teach yourself the material. The average for both tests so far have been 50's. He knows his stuff extremely well, he just CAN NOT teach. DO NOT take this guy.
This class is by far the hardest I have ever taken. Half of the class period was spent on clicker questions and not teaching the material. The class average is about a 50. You might pass if you can be your own professor (teaching yourself as if you have graduated with a degree in physics). AVOID HIM!!
Class average in the 50's. Lets you know it's your fault, not his. Drones over PPT slides. Was thinking of minoring in PH as an EE, decided not to after this guy. Avoid at all costs. Studying for this class negatively affected my prep for other classes because I had to learn it all without his help.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. He speeds through the material as fast as he can. If grades are bad, he only blames students. Never will admit he is wrong. Do everything in your power to avoid him.
he teaches strait out of the textbook and the test are out of this world hard...... DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU WANT A BAD GRADE!!!!!!
As a person who as always been interested in physics, this professor has made me hate it this entire term. He does not really explain most of the vital concepts, he just simply points his laser pointer at the slides and says "you need to know this". Not a good style of teaching when trying to teach a subject as advanced and in depth as physics.
He seems kind and helpful but have trouble to explaining the details. The homework is hard.
This was the hardest class that I have ever taken. It was not that he doesn't know the material but that the tests are almost impossible. He gives extra credit, but he expects a lot out of the students. The homework is extremely difficult, but it is still possible. Be prepared for a tough ride if you take his class. Nothing about it is easy.
Tough course. Lectures consist of him going over the proof portion of equations. Tests are difficult and homework does not prepare you for it. However, if you take the initiative, an A is possible. I definitely learned a lot, but taught it all to myself. Good luck.
I got an A in the course, but then again I am a physics major. Without the curve in the class i would have probably made a low B. The problem in my opinion was a lack of mathematical demonstration of the concept being presented. As a teacher, Silverstone has potential. However Silverstone doesn't make use of his lecture time well.
I sit in the back and play computer games every lecture and still made an A. He's a really nice guy and gives many extra credit points. If you have half an ounce of intelligence you can do well in this class
DO NOT TAKE SILVERSTONE!! His class consists of the students constantly correcting work on the slides he has done. Yes, the students he is teaching.
Absolutely horrible. Makes mistakes in his in class examples and expects the students to know what he did wrong. Never really shows you how to set up a problem correctly. He goes over material incredibly too fast. Literally almost an entire chapter in one day. If you want to make a good grade or just learn physics in general, don't take Silverstone
If you have to take this class, do not I repeat DO NOT TAKE HIM! Probably one of the worst physics professors on campus. Makes several mistakes in his own lecture. Not very clear. Homework does not even come from the same book used. Test are not the easiest and neither is the homework. It was a mistake taking his class.
i will never take another class from him ever again. worst mistake of my life. i took ap physics b in highschool and honors physics and still im not doing well. his tests are completely random and he yells at us for not understanding. i enjoyed physics before and now i dread going to class every day. please dont take him. he is the absolute worst.
Worst teacher i have ever had. Would not recommend taking the class if you have to. worst professor hands down on campus
a hard course but silverstone makes it borderline impossible. I busted my tail off to get an A and still came up short. he expects a lot out of his students which makes it really hard to manage other classes. I recommend getting a Chegg account to help with the homework and read the book over and over and over and over and over...
Overall I enjoyed him as a Professor. He was very articulate and could explain the material very well. The homework became a little over baring towards the end of the semester. It requires a lot of out side time and effort. The lab associated with his lecture class was killer hard. I barely survived.
Dr. Silverstone was a good teacher. The class was tough, but what do you expect? It's physics!! Go to class and do your work and you should do fine. You earn the grade you are given at the end of the semester.
Murray always made class interesting. It's hard to find a teacher anywhere on campus that teaches with the passion he has. Granted, physics is hard, but you will walk away truly understanding physics 101 if you go to his lectures and do the homework.
If you have taken physics before then this class probably won't be that bad for you, but I didn't and I had a lot of trouble. He over complicates simple questions and if you don't understand something he doesn't teach it a different way. Also, his tests are WAY harder than anything else in the class, they are nothing like the homework or classwork.
He was one of the most positive and intelligent professors I've had. It is very important to go to class and pay attention, and if you do, the tests will be easier for you. He gives loads of extra credit and curved the final grade for our class by almost five points. I didn't do all the homework through and through and just studied hard for tests.
He seems like a great guy, fantastic in lectures, and gives extra credit! But there is a lot of homework and reading and the test are no walk in the park. Im not into science so that why I took this class. The lab was TERRIBLE! made a B- in lecture, C- in lab.
Prof. Silverstone has the potential to be a great Physics teacher, but this semester of Physics was absolutely not it. My main beef was more with how the class was set up instead of Prof. Silverstone. The class was rushed, only 3 unit tests and a final and each unit test was only 16 MC questions but covered way too much material. DO NOT TAKE.
Literally worst class I've ever taken. He doesn't actually teach; he just goes through power points of worked problemstry learning physics by staring at problems. You won't. There's a lot of homework and you definitely need to read the book.
Tough class, especially if you don't like physics and are only taking it to fill a requirement. He helps you if you asks, but can be unclear sometimes. The lab period was pretty helpful, usually more than the lecture. Definitely have to work REALLY hard to get an A or even a B. Tests are the hardest part, and there aren't many of them.
He makes some intentional mistakes in lecturing to see if students notice, then goes back and corrects later to make a point. It can get a bit messy and convoluted, but it tends to stick due to the emphasis.
Silverstone is incredibly passionate about his work but he simply doesn't know how to teach students. His homework assignments are cluttered and have almost incoherent due dates and he will have you scrambling to complete multiple assignments in class WHILE he lectures you on completely separate chapters. I'd say more but there's a character limit
Horrible, Don't take him, anyone else. Doesn't really teach you anything, tons of online homework, class or homework does not prepare you for the tests. The class average a the multiple choice test is usually around a 60.
His class is tough, his lectures are confusing and convoluted at times, and the assignments are never ending, but he isn't a dull man. I have his class twice a week for an hour and fifty minutes and I don't struggle to pay attention. I took honors physics in high school and did pretty well, so if you're in the same boat you can definitely handle it
Please dont take Silverstone. He doesnt care about his students. When everyone does bad on a test, he wont take his fair share of the blame. He doesnt help at all and everything about his class is set up to make the student fail. Labs, Tests, classwork is all hard and there is no mercy in grading. He doesn't give you the time to complete anything.
Dr. Silverstone was is an awesome lecturer when it comes to the subject of astronomy. It's very obvious that he loves the subject matter. He's very interactive when it comes to demonstrations. You will have clicker questions in class everyday, and everything on the tests are built from those clicker questions.
I'd never taken a physics class before this one, so it was tough going at first. I eventually started to catch on though, and I realized that Dr. Silverstone knows what he's talking about. You'll have to work for a good grade though. Do practice problems, and actually understand the equations you're using. That's my advice.
Dr. Silverstone is a hard physics teacher, so don't expect to slip by without the occasional all-nighter. Reading the chapters is optional and for extra credit, but it's pretty mandatory if you want to make above a B. Homework's ridiculous, but Google knows all. You get an 8.5"x11" formula sheet on tests, which is basically Jesus on paper for me.
Dr. Silverstone cannot explain anything to save his life. He is content with like 30% of the class getting the right answer. Is not patient and not understanding. Get ready to read the textbook and just struggle.
Not an effective instructor. He is unable to effectively communicate with students. Would be a much better course if he worked through the solutions instead of running through PowerPoints.
Very nice man, however not a good teacher. He goes through lectures REALLY fast and assumes the students understand. Even when a small amount of the class gets a clicker question right, he moves on quickly without explaining. He also moves very fast through example problems that it is impossible to follow along. Hw is hard but you can google most.
I went in thinking that it'd be a terrible time after reading reviews. Overall, the reviews were way off. His class is difficult, but the nature of the material is more at fault; if you make a decent equation sheet or study clicker questions, you will do just fine. He was very open to help you with the labs we did in-class. He LOVES physics a lot.
I like Physics, but this class sucks. Dr. Silverstone is not a good professor and his tests are way too hard. He makes sure a certain number of people fail by the end of the semester.
Not bad not good. Online homework gets very difficult, but grades ok once done. Tests are four times as easy as the homework. If you took AP physics you got this.
Seems like a nice guy but he just doesn't understand how awful of a teacher he is. Rushes through all lectures. Homework is insanely difficult. I passed AP physics in high school but didn't get credit; this class was 10x harder than in HS. Tests not hard, but short. You WILL struggle to keep your head above water. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I had Dr. Silverstone for my 2016 PH105 class. He's quite a fast talker, so if you're not paying attention, you'll likely miss something, but lecture slides are posted, and if you ask, he'll gladly help you out. There WILL be clicker questions EVERY DAY, and regular labs and worksheets, so attendance is a must. Only 3 test days in total, so STUDY.
WORST PHYSICS TEACHER EVER! He goes so fast through power points, you will blink and he would have gone through five or six. Beware. I had to switch to another class, and I have never got below a B+ in any college classes.
This guy is the worst professor/teacher/instructer I have ever had in my life. Avoid him at all costs. He makes the class difficult enough so he meets a personal quota of failing a certain amount of students. The guy us so bad that he has to consistently curve the tests so the average will be a 60%. I could go on but I ran out of characters. AVOID!
Physics is a tough class no doubt, but if you do the homework and half way listen in lecture you will be okay. He allows you a full front and back page to write notes, formulas, etc. to use on each tests. He does not check what you write on there. Finding old test from previous classes are very very helpful. He will curve everything.
I took Dr. Silverstone for Physics 1 with Calc and it was easily the hardest class I have taken to date. His lectures are beyond confusing, his test are impossibly hard, and the homework takes hours upon hours to complete. I ended up with a B+ by the skin of my teeth. He even tells you on the first day to expect 12 hrs of work a week for his class.
Extremely enthusiastic and caring professor. Expect long homework assignments, but they teach you pretty much everything you need to know for the tests. He also applies a generous curve to your grade after each exam and shows you where you stand in the class. Textbook is unnecessary, just apply yourself to the homework and you'll get an A!
Silverstone is the absolute worst. His homework assignments are insanely hard and insanely long. The worst part is they don't prepare you for the test well. Multiple times I have studied for well over 10 hours and still failed the tests and he blames us as the students.
Just save yourself and don't take him. After 2 5's on AP Physics exams in high school, i still managed to be constantly lost.
The only positive thing I have to say about him is that he stays very up to date on grades and he seems to be a pretty nice guy. Other than that, he is an awful teacher. He assigns so much homework and his lectures are terrible. The only reason I did okay in this class is because I took physics in high school, but otherwise I would've been screwed
Very nice and approachable man. He really does want you to succeed, but you WILL have to work for it (especially if, like me, you have never taken physics before this). Homework is endless and difficult and hardly helps you learn the concepts in my opinion. His tests are hard and very short, so be ready. Definitely not an easy course overall.
Clickers are the way he runs the class, so don't forget it. He is passionate about physics, but that doesn't mean you will care. There is a lot of homework but if you can do the homework the tests are not that bad.
Very bad at teaching on an understandable level
He's a really nice guy who knows the material but has NO idea how to teach it. Homework is long and pretty hard. Most of it is unrelated to what you will see on the test. Conceptual questions on the test are relatively easy but the mathematical questions are multi step and complicated. He does not give you example test problems.
3rd year engineering student and I dropped this class. The types of assessments given are not outlined in the syllabus, so you must go to class. Recitation is mandatory. Don't bother asking a question in class, or asking him to actually work a problem, unless you want to be embarrassed with a condescending response.
His class gives a ridiculous amount of homework. On the week of one of his test I had 3 different homework assignments due each night that take about 4 hours a piece to complete. Do not take this class with him.
Very passionate about physics, but does not know how to teach plain and simple. He tries to get you involved with demos and what not but makes the concepts and math way too hard to absorb. Looking at our tests compared to different classes, his were all math heavy whereas the other classes were easier and more theory based. Look elsewhere.
He is a Pearson professor. All homework and lectures come from them. He puts zero effort into actually personalizing the experience and when you ask him for help with labs and assignments he has no idea how to help because all he does is print worksheets and labs from online. Take him only as a last resort.
I thought that he sometimes had a hard time communicating the concept he wanted to teach us, and would often have to correct himself several times to make sure he was right. I thought he was fair, but just doesn't do a great job of teaching the material. Also had approximately 12-16 hours of homework per week- which is what he expects from you
Silverstone expects way too much from this 101 level class. There are a ton of homework assignments and in-class busy work. He flies through his often confusing powerpoints and he doesn't post them until after class, so good luck on the in-class worksheet. I only did well because of my great formula sheets and Chegg. Oh, and test averages are <50%.
Very enthusiastic and cares about the subject and his students. Make sure you go to class for clicker questions as this will help your grade a lot. He does assign a lot of homework but is very upfront about it. He gives study guides outlining the types of problems you should know how to solve and if you go through it the test won't be terrible.
Most in class questions are the wrong answer, trick questions, or misconceptions. Homework takes forever. He expects 12 hours a week of studying outside of class and lab. Absolutely the worst professor at UA
This was the worst thing I have ever done in my life. This made me want to drop out of college.
Physics should not be as hard as he made it to be. I have A's in every other class and im a engineering major but I made a D- in this class.
If you are planning to take murray go ahead and get ready for a lot of homework.
Dr. Silverstone is a Pearson professor who uses one of their in-class answering websites called Learning Catalytics. Good luck connecting to the wifi in the 400 seat classroom he uses in Russell Hall. He will not listen to your grievances. His twice- weekly Mastering assignments take 3-4 hrs a piece. His lectures are irrelevant to his tests.
Coming into this class, I loved physics and had a fairly decent understanding of it; however, after his class, I can confidently say I know less than I did at the beginning of the semester. He's a genius, but he lacks basic communication skills so get ready for a semester of teaching yourself. I would not wish this class on my worst enemy.
Insane amount of homework but in the end it helped me because I failed every test and the final and still passed with a C-. Gets very lecture heavy, it's easy to drift off. Does in class quizzes every day, which if you get them right, help boost your grade as well. Chegg will be your best friend for this class.
Just terrible overall. Don't take him if you can.
awful at explaining concepts, homework takes minimum 3 hours, with two assignments per week. Required book readings. In-class questions almost every day, usually way too complicated. Only positive is that he curves the test scores, largely because a majority of the class gets D's or lower. Could've learned more watching youtube videos tbh.
Homework was about 3-4 hours per assignment and there are usually 2 assignments per week. Also pre lecture assignments that take 15 minutes to an hour twice a week. So every week expect about 8 hours of work per week not including studying or reading. The lectures are not particularly entertaining. Also there is a 2 hour lab every week.
Dr. Silverstone is very knowledgeable in the realm of physics. However, I have never had an instructor struggles as much as him in sharing his knowledge. His powerpoint slides are awful, and he often piles on way too much information. He went over center of mass and gravity in 2 minutes because it was near the end of the class. DO NOT TAKE.
I took his Life In the Universe class, great move. If you're interested in space, potential life somewhere else, and have some background knowledge of the topics this class is for you. Dr. Silverstone is incredibly educated and will definitely leave you with more knowledge than you came in with.
He will spend the majority of the glass only doing Learning Catalytic questions with little to no explanation on why answers are right if the class struggles with it. He also expects you to have taught yourself everything for the lesson before class.
Great professor- very thorough in lecture and uses powerpoints that are incredibly detailed and well-researched. likes demonstrations in class. Lots of homework, but it usually isn't difficult- if you sit down once a week and work on it, you can crank it out within an hour or two.
Worst professor at the University of Alabama. Everyone of his students are miserable, even if they have an A. He acts like he cares for his students academic success, but he actually could care less. Avoid him for Physics 105 no matter what, take it at another school or test out of it.
He is a nice and smart guy but he can't teach physics. There is too much material in too little time and he rushes through everything. His slides are covered but not shown for enough time and he rushes while he teaches. He confuses himself while going over problems and this just confuses the class more.
Silverstone goes through lectures, explaining concepts but not the math. Each unit will have extensive online homework and a pre-lecture reading assignment. He curves grades, so it's definitely possible to pass with a good grade, but I feel like I still need help on the course material.
Super nice guy who is very passionate about physics but hes too qualified to be teaching physics 1. he spends too much time on proofs and not enough teaching concepts. he gives a TON of homework & genuinely expects you to take 8-12 hrs for physics a week. only nice thing is he curves tests very nicely & his study guides are the test problems w/o #s
I took this class as a GPA boost and it was fantastically easy. Just show up to lecture, listen, and take a couple of notes and youll easily make an A.
Nice enthusiastic guy but I feel as if he is way too smart to teach an intro class. If you're a science major you'll do amazing, if you're anything else, good luck charlie.
I took Physics in high school so I had a basic understanding of what was going on. This professor made things I already knew confusing. The majority of the classes were him reading massive formulas off of powerpoints going at a very fast pace. Homework was very difficult and took at least 3-5 hours if I was trying to do well on it.
Great professor, very easy to access, but you have to study like nobody's business and have to understand the concepts behind the materials, not just the material itself. Gets you excited about Astronomy.
I feel like the instructor wasted the majority of the class time going over questions that dealt with material more than the actual material. I didn't learn anything from any of the classes because of how poorly the material was communicated making the only point to attend class to get in the class participation grade. Passed bc textbook only.
He's really knowledgeable but his expectations are way too high for students in an intro course. It feels more like a high school class with about 4 assignments due/week taking about an hour each. It's really intensive and requires a lot of commitment to do well, but being allowed to make cheat sheets for exams definitely helps.
Worst thing I've ever done. DO NOT take him for physics! The class is ridiculously difficult and he makes physics way harder than it has to be. I dreaded every minute of class because majority of the class was graded Learning Catalytics questions with not enough time to solve them. He confuses himself often and does not spend enough time on slides.
Do not take.
You have to stay four chapters ahead at all times. Makes a lot of mistakes and confuses himself. It seems like someone else made his slides and he doesn't understand them. This is a teach yourself kind of class so just be prepared. He's the most hated PH105 professor for a reason. Felt like I was paying thousands of dollars for clicker quizzes.
From a professor standpoint, Silverstone checks all the right boxes - lots of opportunity for points (Including bonus), drop exams, and formula sheets. However, he is not a good teacher by any stretch of the imagination. You will be expected to teach yourself, as he assigns 2 chapters of reading each week with quizzes and 3 hours of hw weekly.
He does not care about your time.
He expects students to already have the material memorized before lecture. The lecture consists of nothing but catalytics questions (which are graded) and the little explanation that he does provide is often muddled with his own confusion. 8+ hours of homework weekly. Expect to teach yourself. Definitely do not take if you've never taken physics.
I got an A in AP physics in HS before I took 105, and barely scraped with a C-. He very often makes errors during lecture, showing he doesnt know it himself There is 12+ hours of graded hw weekly. Over 60% of my class failed out of it, final test avg was 23%, no curves. If you are forced to take him for Physics, wait a semester take w someone else
This was the worst class I have taken in my 2 years at UA. If you haven't taken physics or are taking any other classes that are hard in any way I WOULD NOT take his class.
All I can say is the homework load for this class is insane. You'll be investing in chegg w/o a doubt. Other than that it's an okay class.
The pros: exams are easy if you understand the review and he is very clear about his expectations. The cons: HOMEWORK. Tons of it; expect to spend 6+ hours on each assignment. He sometimes confuses himself in lectures too, which is kind of annoying. Definitely possible to get an A, but be prepared to work for it.
This class was insanely hard. There were so many reading assignments and homeworks. Professor Silverstone seemed like a great guy and he definitely cared about what he was teaching; the class was just hard. The tests were easy if you followed the study guide and used your cheat sheet effectively.
This is one of the worst teachers I have ever taken I actually cannot stand this man. He goes into his classes expecting half the class to fail and has no problem with that. He refuses to curve even when the class average is well below a passing grade. In addition he gives an insane amount of homework 6-8 hours at least each week for a 101 class.
Worst professor I've ever had. I knew this class would be hard, so it wasn't that. He just really seems not to care about his students at all. You have to submit answers to questions during the lecture within about a minute, but if the internet is down or the site won't load, oh well. You get a zero for that class period. Really terrible guy.
I took this course for a natural science credit, however I was not expecting to be doing hours of homework each week. The tests were very hard and even if you review the study guides you will not pass the tests. I would not recommend this course to anyone looking for an easy natural science.
This man does not seem to realize that I have 6 other classes that I have to work on. He assigns 8 hours of homework every week and he expects us to read every chapter before the lecture on top of that. I only took this class because I had to take it this semester. If you can afford to wait to get a different professor then I strongly recommend it.
Professor Silverstone is very passionate about his lectures, although he gets in such a level of depth that it's very hard to understand. It leaves most students lost within his class and I was confused the entire time. So much homework and I don't recommend taking this for a natural science credit.
By far the worst professor ever. He assigns so much homework for it to barely count towards your grade. Every time he makes a study guide for exams the questions on the study guide are never found on the exam. On top of that he is just straight up annoying to listen to in lectures. Worst professor ever DO NOT take a class with Silverstone EVER.
He assigns entirely too much homework and is highly scatterbrained. I'm in the 4th week of class and I'm already over it.
If you are looking for a reason to end it all, this class is for you! worst professor ive had in 3 years. he expects you to study 9-12hrs a week+ 3 hours of homework. goes through lecture slides too fast to take notes and doesnt post slides until after class, so any explanations in lecture are useless. extremely overboard for an intro level class.
Did not directly take Silverstone, but used his lab manual for AY102 lab, which everything is derived from. This manual is so incredibly awful. Everything is so needlessly complicated and tedious. Formulas are given in word format, few diagrams. This manual is genuinely the worst guide or textbook for a class I have ever used.
Great professor for AY101. Attendance is measured by online in-class questions. Lectures take the whole class period and there's a lot of homework, but the lectures were thorough enough that I didn't need to read the textbook and I was able to do a lot of the homework in class.
Never have I had a professor that so blatantly disrespects your time. The idea that you have multiple classes outside of his is foreign to him. Assigns multiple homework assignments a week that take 2+ hours a piece on top of other reading review assignments. Very passionate about physics, but does not need to be in the classroom whatsoever.
This professor is horrible. The amount of pointless homework and pre-reading/ assignments is insane! He does not seem to grasp the fact that we have other classes. There is no reason a 101 non-major class should take up this much of my time. Avoid this professor at all costs!
Very clear on grading requirements, all information is put right in front of face and easy to access.
I think Dr. Silverstone believes there is only physics 105 at UA, at least that's what is reflected with the amount of out of class work every week; expect to spend upwards of 12 hours working outside of class. His lectures aren't really helpful, so you better wine and dine that textbook if you want to pass. Grading policy is clear, though.
Murray's class is no walk in the park - expect a heavy workload and challenging exams. However, the lectures are informative, and tools like unstuck study can help with study prep. If you're willing to put in the effort, you'll learn a lot.
If you're trying to see how easy the AY lab is going to be, this won't help. Silverstone is the lab prof, but he will never be there. He just wrote the lab manual. Your experience depends on your TAs, which is really up to luck. 11 labs+1 makeup and 3 lab quizzes. Lab scheduled for 3 hours, but is 1.5 at most. Nothing to stress about.
There was a lot of material in this class, making it difficult. Expect lots of homework which is easy to drown in. Tests are calculation MC, w/o partial credit, though prof. gives study guides which very very closely mirror test material, making tests much more manageable. I think most bad ratings come from the amount of work this class entails.
unclear lectures that cover unnecessarily complex formulas, instead of very important concepts and formulas. recommended 2 hours of reading for every hour in class on top of 7+ hours of homework assigned each week, including fall and thanksgiving break. ignored 3 of my emails postponed final unit test to the same day as the final exam
Professor Silverstone really cares about physics and is usually the most excited person in the room. His passion for physics sometimes gets in the way of explaining concepts. He will go on long tangents about unimportant information, give 10+ hours of work a week, and will overcomplicate a beginner's physics course.
15 hours of homework and 14 of those hours are on stuff you do not need to know. Do not take him.
Unaccessible. Did not teach relevant material. Assigned a minimum of 7 hours of homework per week, even on fall and thanksgiving break.
This class is two hours long on MW, but the time isn't used efficiently. Lectures feel dragged out with complex, often unhelpful examples. Homework felt like busy work. However, the study guides were very helpful, and being allowed a formula/cheat sheet on tests was a saving grace. Still, I wouldn't recommend this course.
He makes easy topics hard and hard topics impossible. Seems like a nice dude but should not be allowed to teach ANYTHING.
Worst thing that happened freshman year so far.
Gives 15 hours of homework each week that wont help you on the test. Test is multiple choice where if he doesn't like you work you get a 0.
He rambles incoherently...like all the time.
He just sits there and rambles off nonsense during class for 2 HOURS. There is about 5 hours of required homework per week. Take any other Ph105 professor, even if it has to change your entire schedule around. Worst experience I have ever had for a class, and wouldn't be surprised if it was the worst experience I will ever have.
Although this professor had tons of homework, the tests were pretty easy. As long as you study the material and do the homework then the class is fine. I really enjoyed the material. He uses powerpoints.
Very assignment-heavy.
Murray is the worst professor you can take for Physics. The textbook, lectures, homework, and exams are four different things and are never connected. He doesn't respond to his emails and is extremely hard to contact. He doesn't curve and uses distribution curves to show why he doesn't need to (he does they are just wrong fake percentages).
Assigns way too much homework which wont help you at all on the tests. The tests questions are completely different from the HW problems. I would delay taking this class a semester or more if I knew what I was getting myself into.
This was one of the worst classes I took this semester, and I think any other professor would have been a better choice. The way he structures his class is really bad. He offers no extra credit/scale on tests, while ALL the other physics professors do. There were also multiple homework/prelecture assignments a week that took 2-3 hours to complete.
There's really nothing good to say about Silverstone. The amount of homework he assigned and the homework itself was ludicrous, unintuitive, and time consuming. Despite my effort and having always attended his lectures, I never learned anything. I came to the decision to drop his class when I started to struggle in other classes because of him.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!! I took this class along with organic chem, calc2, and analytical chem. He wasted so much of my time on useless assignments and made this semester a living hell. I am not lying to you when out of all the classes i took this semester, his was the hardest, worst, and most unforgiving. No curving or e.c.
