she's not horrible but take brewer if you can. she wasnt very good at teaching concepts like brewer is but she's pretty good at explaining the math stuff.
Just doesn't explain things well.. You won't learn anything from lecture whatsoever. Not a good experience.
Quite possibly one of the worst teachers I have ever experienced in my life. Knows the material but can't convey it. Often gets side-tracked and talks about things that have nothing to do with the class.
If you're looking for an easy A and do not care about learning the information, then take Norman in the SUMMER! She basically gives the test on her study guides, and you can take a note card into tests! Chem can't get any easier! My only regret is not taking Chem 2 with her in the summer also!
really sweet and funny lady, but that doesnt make up for her teaching...all she does is write a bunch of random crap on the board and you copy it and you leave the class not knowing ANYTHING new. so be prepared to read. or go to brewers class.
Insane (always too much info) / hilarious / knows her stuff
horrible teacher take brewer, trust me take brewer, me and half the class skiped her class and sat on the stairs in brewers.
WORST TEACHER EVER! She sucks period. She is so bad that the class before me people actually walk out, and cuss her out lol. Idk how she is a teacher at all. She SUCKS. I'm in her class as of now. Wish me luck, this **** sucks idk how else i can emphasis that she sucks!!!
RUN! Do not take this class unless you're looking for a F!
This class is not as difficult as the majority of students make it out to be. The exams are the same for all students in Chem 1; therefore, Norman is no more difficult than Brewer. If you want your notes spoon-fed to you like in high school, then I would suggest that you sit in on Brewer's lectures, but I would not suggest rearranging your entire
Try to take Brewer's class. Norman rambles and does not teach direct examples that will be on the test. If you want clarity and understanding definitely get into Brewers class. This is a difficult class, so go to class, take good notes, and do all the homework.
Trust me- take Brewer if you can, or if you end up with Norman, attend Brewer's lectures if you're actually interested in understanding the material. And it's unbelievable how un-empathetic and uncompassionate someone who teaches mostly freshman can be when you go visit her during office hours with questions/problems. Really- avoid at all costs
Avoid this teacher if possible. Take Brewer's class or go to her lectures if instead. Norman doesn't know how to teach a large class. She is rude, unhelpful, and makes the Chemistry department of the University of Arkansas look terrible.
DO NOT TAKE MRS NORMAN IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE. She is a very sweet lady who is dedicated to her work BUT her notes are unreadable and jibberish. It is very hard to follow what she is saying because she skips around and leaves out details. But,it is very possible to make an A or B in the class, they give you many bonus points and theres a huge curve.
She is a great professor and extremely helpful. She tutors students without making anybody feel as if though they're stupid. The main point is that she's extremely helpful and understanding. Take her.
Avoid at all costs, rambles relentlessly and easily gets off topic. Also has major mood swings, and giggles to herself during class. Take Brewer if you have the chance she is a lot more insightful and knows how to teach it well!!
Despite all the bad reviews, Dr.Norman is a great professor. Funny and interesting in her own way, but still good :P She's very helpful, and does great review for the exams.
Dr. Norman knows her stuff, but is EXTREMELY moody and not very helpful. She is cocky and acts like a 2nd grader at times. I would recommend that if at all possible, take Brewer. The material is HARD and you HAVE to study to pass. Norman's notes aren't the best, but are helpful. Norman herself, however, is NOT.
If you have her, get to know her personally and she will like you better.
She is awful!! Doesn't explain anything clearly. She thinks shes funny but she makes no sense at all. Just does examples and expects you to understand for the test. Do the hw and u can pass she isn't worth going to class for. If you can choose another teacher do it!!!!
The class is easy. Do the homework and go to SI. They inflate your grade with easy points. Brewer is BY FAR a better teacher, but Norman is alright. She's bipolar sometimes and goofy. She can be very impatient, but I think she want to help students so get to know her. She is very smart and knows what she's talking about, just is bad at teaching it.
I have had Dr. Norman for three classes. While she is a bright, bright researcher, she should not be teaching general chemistry. Her expertise and teaching style would work for apprentices in a lab, but not for freshman and sophomore students. If you can fly alone and do well, by all means, take her. If not, I HIGHLY recommend an alternative.
Presents the material to the class as if everyone is on the same level of understanding as her. Goes through the slides way to quick to the point where you are either focusing on writing down the notes or just give up and listen to her ramble. Skips steps when doing practice problems, leaving many students behind. Preferential to 'smarter' students
If you get her, try to switch to brewer. Honestly the worst teacher I've ever had. Thinks everyone knows the same amount she does and flies through slides. you will not finish writing, I guarantee it. Hardly does practice problems. Go to drill and rework practice tests, but know that the test will be 3 times harder.
Extremely confusing during lecture. Sporadic. However, she gives bonus points during lecture the day after the test, online HW is easy, and if you keep up with the reading it isn't too difficult
Do not take her. I had her for Chem II and she never seem prepared for class, didn't thoroughly explain difficult concepts what so ever, and not very patient. I think I would have done better in the class if I had just taught myself out of the book. Try and take Brewer if you can.
DON'T DO IT!!! TAKE BREWER! SWITCH NOW!!!
Don't go to class. It's pointless except on the day after the test or the day before spring break when she gives bonus. Go to drill once a week to keep up, work the practice exams, skim through the book, and do as much homework as you feel is necessary and you will be better prepared than by her lectures. Her laugh is way too annoying for 8:30 am.
Tries her best to explain, she's just not good at it. However, if you show up to class and can halfway figure out the material she will do whatever she can to help you. Take her in the summer, chem 1 and 2, it's a long 12 weeks but worth it. Plus you will get a better grade.
She is probably a very smart woman but she seems to have trouble sharing her knowledge with students. She doesn't seem to understand that a chem I class doesn't understand the language of chemistry and she doesn't explain herself and she laughs at her own jokes that aren't funny at all. I recommend taking Brewer. She is not a good professor at all.
She's obviously a very bright researcher but this woman cannot teach to save her life. In the few weeks that I had her before I withdrew, she called us 'a group of 3 year olds' and also refused to show how to work problems students asked her to. Moody, awful, and assumes we already know chemistry so she doesn't bother to explain it. Get out!
She isn't the best teacher but if she's all that's left you won't die taking her class...there are just better out there. She is crazy in class throws fits and talks about random stuff. She is obsessed with chemistry, if you took high level Chemistry in high school they way she teaches would be perfect but if it's been a few years...try and avoid her class
This teacher doesn't work well in large lectures, she is sometimes hard to understand and is never consistent with her lessons.
This is a hard, hard course no matter what professor you take. I would recommend Brewer, although Norman isn't as bad as everyone makes her out to be. It is very hard to learn the material in her lectures. The exams are extremely difficult to pass. If you are taking this course, do the problems outlined in the text book and you will survive.
Norman was the worst teacher i have ever had. Her lectures are everywhere and she has trouble teaching chemistry. I ended up going to another teacher to learn chemistry.
I had her for University Chem. She had trouble explaining concepts constantly and seemed to struggle with the material herself at times. Not helpful if you ask her questions. Take any other teacher if you can. Wonder when the department will finally find someone else to teach this class instead of her.
going to class was pretty much worthless, I had to do everything on my own. Also, the online homework was far different from what we were asked on the test.
I don't see why everybody complains about her so much... she is not the best teacher i've ever had but she wasn't anything to complain about. As long as you do all the online HW, attend all the classes, and SI meetings, and spend a good 2 days studying for each test, you should be fine.
if you do what she tells you too, then you'll be fine. we're in COLLEGE people, you should know how to wipe your own butt and not complain. TIP: get to know her, try and take her drill. helped out a lot!!!
Incredibly smart person, but so smart that she dosnt understand why you don't understand. Doesn't help when you need it, she says that she gave you notes to help and if you have questions that is what drill is for.
Shes so smart she cannot dumb it down enough for you. if you have never had any background of chem before, DO NOT TAKE HER. There is lots of bookwork, and a lot of online work that is very different from book work and test. attendance isnt mandatory, but clicker points are essential and help your grade. Very nice lady, but you have to teach yourself
way too smart for her own good but cannot handle such large masses of students. avoid her class as much as possible. if you have to take her course, visit her one on one and she'll help you out. avoid her as much as possible though.
She's kind of awkward during lectures. Super nice but awkward. It's obvious that she knows what she's talking about but the majority of the time the lectures are pointless and you learn the material from the homework/SI/OWL
Avoid at all costs. Lectures are disorganized and she's completely unhelpful through email or during office hours.
Very awkward lady..And worse teacher I've ever had. Honestly, if I didn't come to this class with a solid AP Chem class background from my senior year of high school, I would have failed. Even when it came to concepts I knew, if I payed attention, she would get me super confused. It was like she took the hardest way to get the answers. AVOID
Literally the best teacher I've ever had at the University. Our entire class LOVED her and in SI we would rant and rave about how easy she makes it.
Very smart but cannot explain anything to beginners. Makes students feel inferior for asking questions. Off topic 99% of the time, class is useless because you have to teach yourself everything anyway. Tries to be nice but is not very approachable.
Entertaining lecture but, watching youtube videos about chemistry is more helpful than attending the lecture.
She is a very nice lady but gets off topic easily. The lectures do not help at all, but the Drill leaders are very helpful. Make sure to read the textbook because it helps with the homework. Good luck.
BEST CLASS I HAVE HAD IN A LONG TIME. I AM IN LOVE WITH MYA. <3<3
Didn't learn from Norman at all, just the book. Super easy to pass class with all the bonus she gives. Don't expect to learn from the lectures, but sill go for the bonus she gives during class
Makes easy topics difficult to understand by needlessly inserting analogies rather than explaining the science like you would expect in a class for engineers.
DO NOT DO IT!! She thinks throwing in several problems that were never discussed into a test is easy. She is a horrible teacher
Not a very good teacher. Goes off topic a lot which makes it hard to pay attention. The only reason I even bothered to go to class was for bonus points. It would be almost impossible to pass this class if it weren't for all the bonus she gives out. Also her practice tests usually end up very different from the test given.
Her class is terrible. She's obviously uncomfortable in front of a class and it shows in her lessons. Her tests are extremely difficult because she does't teach the material. The only good thing about the class was the vast amount of bonus opportunities.
More often than not, you can find her standing in front of the class rambling on about her kids in kindergarten or some confusing analogy to chemistry rather than deeply explaining the logic and process behind problems. She wastes time and often comes to class with a bad attitude. Her lectures are confusing and not helpful. Avoid if possible.
This professor is fairly intimidating but I do not understand why so many complain about her being a terrible professor, she explains exactly what will be on tests, quizzes, etc. I believe she is the scapegoat for people who dislike studying. All you need is mastering chemistry, clicker, and notebook paper; you'll be all set.
Very, very difficult. But she really works with you and if you just talk to her after class, she'll do anything in her power to help you succeed.
Lies to you about difficulty of tests and is impossible to follow in class as she goes off on her rants about Colorado. One of the worse teachers I've had
She was helpful during office hours and offered several opportunities for bonus points.
She understands the material very well but it's hard to follow where she's going sometimes. She goes off topic very often and seems to be very uncomfortable talking to crowds. I don't hate her, but there is room for improvement. Overall I'd rate the class 6/10.
She is one of the best professors ever. She usually goes off the topic with weird fun examples from her family. But if you go to office hours and do ALL the homework, chem 1 and chem 2 are easy As. Classes are fun and you won't fall asleep. She really wants you to understand what is going on in the class
Enthusiastic, tests aren't difficult but can be tricky. Pretty easy to make a good grade because of bonus'. I really didn't find here too smart when it came to Chem II in general. We had an extremely intelligent engineering TA that would basically do her job for her. Made everyone buy a $200+ book that we didn't even use and couldn't sell back.
Mrs. Norman is a great teacher. I don't see why people complain about her. She's willing to help if you ask her. She makes chemistry clear. If you get to know her and ask her questions/participate she'll definitely take in wether or not you try or not.
This class almost made me drop my ChemE major until I realized chemical engineers don't use most of this crap. Classes were way too overpopulated, and material was not presented in a clear manner. Bonus points will get you a good grade, but you will leave feeling confused and often disheartened after every test.
In a lecture setting with 100+ students, things can get difficult to follow very quickly. She's got lots of energy, but it all seems to dissipate and lead nowhere. There's no focus. While I can walk away from a lecture not having learned anything, outside of that she's very helpful. Lots of helpful links on Blackboard. Just... teaching? No.
Dr. Norman is one of my favorite teachers at the U of A and I am a ChemE. while I do believe she is a bit um, eccentric, she is an absolutely awesome teacher. Read the book do the homework and if your struggling go to her office and you'll do fine strongly suggest this Professor.
Pretty good teacher but she gets off topic a lot which makes it hard to focus.
Dr. Norman is my favorite professor this year. She is very enthusiastic, kind, and knowledgeable. I will not lie. You must do the book homework and make sure you understand the content of the lectures. However, IF you put forward a good amount of effort, you will be fine. She also gives plenty of bonus. Overall, great teacher!
Super rude
Very nice. Personally one of my favorite professors although sometimes not the greatest at explaining the material. Gives lots of opportunities for bonus points. If you show up to class for the clicker questions and go to SI you should get enough bonus to get an A or B even if you don't do great on the tests.
Dr. Norman is one of the absolute worst teachers I've ever had. Luckily, the class is fairly easy and she does give a lot of bonus. She is EXTREMELY rude to the students who ask questions and to the rest of UofA staff. Unfortunately, this class is required and there is no way to get around it. You will do most of your learning in SI.
Terribly unclear, each lecture is just endless rambling with a bit of what appears to be chemistry thrown in. Knows the material well, does not know how to teach it. If someone asks for a worked example, she will work the example without explaining how she does the work, leaving the student no more clear. Worst science teacher I have ever had.
Norman rambles, doesn't understand how to explain things, and her tests seem to come out of left field as they aren't from the online homework and deviate somewhat from her practice test. She isn't very good, try not to take her. Offers a letter grade's-worth of extra credit, so take advantage of that and you'll pass.
I love Dr. Norman as a person, she is really cool and you can tell that she loves chemistry. However, it is like she is such a genius that she cannot dumb down the information very easily. I found the most help I got came from my Student Instructor and you really need to read the chapters before lecture, even if you have no idea what it going on.
I love Dr. Norman as a person. I know it is hard to teach a beginner class but I feel like it could have come across a little better. She doesn't explain the material very well, but if you go to her office she is more than happy to help. With all the extra credit she gives you should easily be able to make a B or A in this class.
She is all over the place Needs a chill pill
She's just not very good at lecturing. She goes off on random tangents and teaches in a confusing style. She doesn't seem to teach chemistry in the right order. Almost like she just picks a random chemistry topic for the day
Dr. Norman is a great teacher she can sometimes get a bit off topic, however she lectures great. Read the book and go to class and if that still isn't helping go to her office hours and you should do fine, there are more than enough points.
GOOD PROFESSOR, TAKE HER CHEMISTY CLASS AND GET A ON YOUR GRADE. SHE IS REALL Y FUNNY AND USEFUL. GO TO CLASS THEN ATTENDANCEIS IMPORTANT.
Dr. Noman gives out a huge amount of extra credit, and curves almost every test. If you show up to class and do the homework, it should be an easy A.
Simple case of sweet person, but horrible teacher. Goes off on rants. Teaches as if we are already supposed to know the material. Does NOT make you feel like wanting to learn. Makes you feel dumb. Take it in the summer and just do your work. In the summer she gives alot of bonus points and there is no hw.
This is an easy class, especially if you have taken chemistry before. She typically seems a little flustered, and sometimes she can be a tad cranky, but she's relatively helpful and hilarious. The tests are all MC. Clicker questions and SI offer loads of bonus points.
She is an awesome teacher and will help you to the best of her ability, but you should do your best to get on her good side and respect her and she will help you more. Also if you do these things the class becomes easier anyways because she goes through anything you want with you.
If you don't get something, go to her office hours. If you get to know you she will help you out a lot, write a letter of rec (if you need one), and if you are boarder line she will bump you up. You have to get to know her though. She's spazzy, but a great teacher. I thought it was way easier than what it could have been. I got a high A.
Dr. Norman is a horrible professor. She will dog on you for not understanding something instead of explaining it calmly and kindly. She needs to understand that yes it's easy for her, but it's not easy for most people. At the beginning she will talk about how she hates teaching Chem I and loves teaching Chem II. She hates teaching in general.
She is not clear in her lectures. They are unorganized and filled will a lot of unusable information. She does not like teaching lower level chemistry but she stated no one else would do it. I am going to take chemistry elsewhere.
This class does have clickers, so show up, but they are usually very doable. I would say that reading the book is helpful for tests and doing homework. Yes, there is a bit of homework but it is very doable and online, easy to get 100 if you pay attention.
Norman is great, a lot of people don't like her because she is corky but I thought it helped the time go by. She loves chemistry & is willing to help you if you need it, she is always available & will email you back. She cares a lot about her students but is willing to go out of her way to help you if you show up and ask questions, sit in the front
Norman is one of those professors that knows her stuff and is passionate about chemistry but doesn't always dumb it down for her students. She's a bit spastic and doesn't always teach stuff that correlates with the homework. You need to go to class to get the clicker points they help a lot. SI is wonderful, thats where you learn everything!
great
She was a good teacher and I passed with an A. She gave out reviews that were almost exactly like the test and the homework helped a lot too. I never used the book. She knows what she's talking about, but when someone ask a question she acts like their stupid for asking.
I took Norman for Chem I and II and from my experience, take her over the summer! She is kind of all over the place during lecture, and unclear a lot of the time, but she gives bonus points for clicker questions. SI was great and the book can help clarify. When students have questions, she gets frustrated and acts like they're dumb for asking.
Norman is such a great professor. She has a clear understanding of Chemistry and will explain things the simplest way possible. She offers so much extra credit and drops your lowest exam. It was an easy A for me.
Norman is such a great professor. She has a clear understanding of Chemistry and will explain things in the simplest way possible. She offers so much extra credit and drops your lowest exam. It was an easy A for me.
Norman can sometimes be all over the place and a little nerdy/quirky. She can be sassy and sarcastic to students who don't seem to grasp basic concepts - so maybe save questions like that for a tutor. But, she gives TONS of extra credit, understands we have other classes, and drops the lowest test grade. Take her class! Easy A if you work for it.
If you have any background in chemistry, this class is most likely an easy A. Norman can be moody and off topic, but she is not a bad professor. If you show to class, go to SI, and do the homework, you will pass.
Dr. Norman is an amazing professor, she really cares about you. You don't really need the textbook because she puts up all of her power points online before lecture. I highly recommend reading over the power point before going into class because it will really help!
Norman is not good in lecture but does everything she can to help you succeed. A majority of the grade is clicker points from attending class, online homework due every week or so, and Supplemental Instruction which help you learn what Dr. Norman struggles to convey in lecture and give easy points. Tests are hard but do practice tests released
Dr. Norman is not the best lector and can be all over the place. But she is so caring and kind. She wants the best for you! Tests are not too hard, the homework is the most trying part of the class. Do the problems in the book, go to review sessions, and take the practice test twice and it is not hard to get an A! (PS. I'm a non-science major!)
Dr. Norman was one of my favorite professors this semester. She absolutely LOVES Chemistry and is incredibly passionate. She truly wants her students to do well. She is very quick to respond to emails, and she is a really neat person to talk to about chemistry. The tests are unnecessarily difficult. Tons of really nasty questions.
Would definitely recommend Mya. She can be moody and gets frustrated with her students if they aren't grasping the concept during class which is annoying. Go to class and get the clicker points (also gives out random extra credit clicker questions), go to SI and go your owlV2 homework and you will get an A/B. An A is her class is an 88%.
She is a bit cooky but definitely a great prof. She is so helpful during office hours. offers a lot of extra credit. Homework is a pain but there opportunity for EC. if you go to class she offers a lot of EC for clickers. Tests are freaking hard!
She is a really good teacher, even though she is easily side tracked. Go to class, pay attention, take notes, go to SI (part of grade). Make sure you do your clickers and the EC she gives. If you put in effort into this class you will get an A. DO NOT SKIP A SINGLE CLASS
Dr. Norman has a habit to mention things that are not on topic, so learning how she teaches and when to pay attention is a skill one has to develop. She is passionate and very peppy. The class isn't too bad and reading isn't a must to make good grades on the tests. The homework is very annoying to work through though. I suggest going to SI.
Worst professor ever. She is condescending and all over the place in her lectures. She expects everyone to do well on the tests and homework and come to class being a master in chemistry. she is always messing up calculations and confusing the entire class. you have to take everything she says with a grain of salt which sucks if you're struggling.
Because of the sheer difficulty and changes that I took with Mya Norman it made it seem the class was a lot harder than it was, however she wants her students to do well and encourages you to email or come to her office hours if you're struggling. The class size is generally big so you wont get many chances to talk in class. She is lecture based.
The single most disorganized teacher I've met
Mya was extremly rude to me and disinterested in teaching. I took her for a lab and she was so disrespectful in her emails. She was condescending and sarcastic. I would recommend you to take anyone else. Spare yourself the adgitation of dealing with someone this irritable.
Dr. Norman is fantastic! The course is unavoidably hard (over the top, really) but Norman is helpful and prepares the class well for homework and exams. Gives enough time to do attendance questions. Knows her stuff. Stopped lecture to let students know about campus food pantry. Answers emails quickly. Great person and great professor!
Terrible proffesor. Instead of teaching, wastes everyone's time by giving terrible jokes such as shoving babies in an elevator. You have to teach yourself outside of class to learn.
Does not teach, even though this class is required for engineering majors. You have to teach yourself outside of class because she wastes class time by distracting students with jokes that they do not find funny.
Overall good teacher
Took class because required for my major. However, this professor didn't teach the class anything and just told random jokes that only she found funny. If possible, find a different professor.
Definitely, don't take her 8 am class she is so unorganized always frustrated with something whether its the technology or students not knowing what's happening. She tries to make jokes but no one thinks they're funny. I would try and find a different professor if possible
I haven't even completed this course yet and professor Norman is actually insane. Terrible professor and is all over the place. She expects you to know everything already so you end up just teaching yourself outside the class. I strongly recommend everyone to choose a different professor. I wish I had more character to explain how terrible she is.
Wastes our class time when this class is required for some of us by telling us stupid jokes that she doesn't apparently realize that nobody in class finds funny but herself. Doesn't care about her students at all. Find a different professor, if possible. Also, if I had more characters, I could say more.
She assigns homework for things she hasnt taught yet and then gets behind and so you do Quantum stuff by yourself and dont know if youre doing it right till 4 weeks after the homework is due.
Doesnt teach a thing. Very sarcastic and passive aggressive. Expects students to know everything before class since its backwards platform
Assigns way too much homework and doesn't teach material, making homework take longer than it actually should
Assigns a lot of homework, but forces us to spend more time on it by not teaching the material during class time. Gets very distracted with other things during her lectures and tends to be a bit disorganized.
Does a terrible job with teaching material. Too disorganized.
Doesn't do a good job of teaching, considering that I had to teach myself outside of her lectures to get an A, proving it's possible to pass her class, though you have to put more work, where if you were to have a different professor, you may not have to spend as much time to learn material.
She is very condescending and not patient. Her teaching style is all over the place and she does not do a good job of explaining the material. Her thoughts are very disorganized, making it hard to keep track of what is happening.
Dr. Norman is a chemist, not a teacher. She is obviously very knowledgeable in her field but has a harder time explaining it clearly. She is friendly but gets distracted pretty easily. I did not receive the grade I wanted so I am going back to take Fun Chem. This class is not impossible. It just requires you to have this class as a top priority.
There is a lot of homework, attendance points matter, not the best teacher at all
Dr. Norman is by the far worst teacher I have ever had. She's demeaning and doesn't care about her students at all. I would avoid her if you can. She's so disinterested in teaching. She also gets mad at her students for asking questions and not knowing the answer. If I could go back, I would've waited a whole semester for another class to be open.
Mya Norman is very smart, but not good at teaching. She talks too much about her personal life and gets distracted when she's trying to teach. She only makes the material more confusing. There's also a ton of homework in this class, including ALEKS, mastering chemistry, and reading every week. However, tests other than the final are not too hard.
Norman may be the worse teacher I have came across in the 14 years I have been in school. She is very intelligent and understands what is going on but she is horrible about teaching the message. Her class is mandatory even though going will only make you more confused, she talks a lot about her personal life and how she is here for research.
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT GO TO THIS CLASS. THIS IS THE WORST PERSON YOU WILL TAKE. DO NOT DO IT. YOU WILL NOT GET NOT EVEN A B. DO NOT DO IT. I CAN SAY MORE BUT I AM NOT ALLOWED TO SAY IT HERE BUT DANG IT IT WAS THE MOST AWFUL EXPERIENCE IN MY ENTIRE ACADEMIC CAREER THUS FAR. DO NOT TAKE HER, I CANNOT EMPHASIZE ENOUGH.
My course was based off of a flipped classroom and I learned more at home than I did in class. She is terrible at explaining things and complains about her life and the students grades rather than teaching the actual course. There is an option to take the class with either Mrs. Norman or Mr. Gerner at the UofA; I HIGHLY recommend Mr. Gerner.
The class itself isn't super challenging but the professor sucks! I would not recommend anyone to take her but unfortunately I believe shes the only one teaching this course next year. Lectures are mandatory but don't help at all you're basically just showing up for the participation points not because it'll help. GOOD LUCK!
I worked so hard for my grade, did extra tutoring and everything and still received a terrible grade. She was unapproachable and tough. Do not take
She is not a difficult professor. Students who dont do their work or keep up with their studying make the class difficult for themselves and for her, she does not make the class difficult.
She gets mad at students when they dont understand yet fails to teach. The classroom is flipped so theres about 10+ hours of homework yet when I go into the lecture Im more confused then when I went in. She doesnt know how to teach the material. One was the lowest score I could give.
Dr. Norman gets a really bad wrap. She's just a normal college professor. She won't coddle you and treat you like you're in high school. Yeah, if you don't do your work outside of class, you're not going to do well. Her lectures are a little all over the place but you get used to it. Overall, she wants you to do well and she gives SO MANY resources
I genuinely think that Mya Norman is by far the worst professor on the campus. A flipped classroom with around 10+ hours of homework due twice a week, and if you are struggling with the homework, don't look for her to clear things up for you. Best bet is to get a tutor because she's about as useless as it comes for a professor
Had this professor two semesters ago. Did not teach and wasted class time by telling jokes nobody found funny, but herself. Take Dr. Gerner, if possible.
She just honestly didn't know how to teach and her class was just weird. I did not like it at all.
Dr. Norman is a wonderful professor. she is very energetic and interactive during the lecture. she is very good at explaining difficult concepts because she recognizes that they are difficult and relates them to when she was a student. Dr. Norman is also easily approachable outside of class and actively encourages people come to her for help.
She could have done a better job at teaching the course. There is lots of homework and if you don't read the textbook, you won't do well on the tests. If you go in for office hours, she'll help a lot more than she does in class. The tests are hard but if you're prepared for it, then you'll do fine. Go to class - participation is key.
The class itself is very standard, but the way she teaches... Can I even call it teaching? She never fully explains a topic before moving on or assigning a problem for points.
Assigns too much homework and does not teach material. The class is easy, but you have to teach yourself outside of class. She wastes time by telling jokes that are not funny. Take a different professor if possible.
Dr. Norman knew her stuff when it came to chemistry, but did a terrible job and teaching it. I learned absolutely nothing from her class and the only reason I even passed was because of my drill TA. Dr. Norman also frequently made comments putting down students for putting a wrong answer during class. Overall just a horrific teacher.
Mya Norman has a great energy and intentions, but she is not the easiest to understand whenever she begins jumping from idea to idea. The content is inherently hard, and if you don't already have any chem experience coming in, you are going to have to work very hard to learn the content and do well.
Prof. Norman will often gloss over information that is important to anyone taking the class, however if she feels like it is common knowledge or isn't worth her time she will not bother covering it. Expect 10 or more assignments every week, and be prepared to be 100% lost in her classes. At least she isn't boring, so you can laugh while you fail.
I made it 3 weeks into professor Normans class before I realized I just needed to drop and try for prof gerner next semester. My last day of class something seemed off with Norman, she was jumpy and jittery and could not focus on the topic at hand. No accusations, but she was acting a lot like someone strung out on meth. I wouldnt put it past her
Dr. Norman is an interesting character to say the least. She always seems like she either just loaded up on candy, or is lowkey about to have a break down. The lectures don't always seem to correlate with the reading (LOT OF READING) but the exams are fairly straightforward. Not the best at explaining things as she gets off track pretty easily
This is chemistry for complete idiots (myself included). 9/10 would recommend. Easy class, easy lab, easy homework, easy exams, actually will give you an understanding of chem. She's super easy going and nothing like the Dr. Norman in Fundamentals or University chem. She is giving us a few fridays off too. Shes a little scatter brained but cool
You would be just as well off to skip the lectures and read the textbook (which you'll be reading extensively and probably multiple times if you want to receive an A anyways) EXCEPT; attendance of the sporadic, awkwardly presented, written in the most minimalist way possible lectures is mandatory for 10% of your grade. Cool person, but worst class.
If you can avoid taking her class, AVOID IT. She makes everything 10x more difficult and confusing. News flash: when the entire class does bad on an exam, it's likely due to your teaching style. I did so much better in the class teaching myself than listening to her. DO. NOT. TAKE. HER. If you do, be prepared to teach yourself chemistry!
Took this prof last year and she sucks. Didnt learn a single thing from her and I never missed a day of class. Your better off with any other professor because taking Mya Norman is a waste of time and money.
Worst class ever. Get ready to teach yourself chemistry. Even in class, you have to answer questions on the clicker about topics she hasnt even taught yet in class! And then she gets upset when only 5% of the class gets the answer right. She LITERALLY expects that you know everything. Tests are difficult & unfair. Take a different prof if you can
She brings a lot of energy everyday, but the class is hard. If you expect to pass just from the lectures, you are wrong. Requires lots of learning outside of the classroom. Only using Chegg for the homework to get the answer, will come back to haunt you on the test and will most definitely show.
Wastes our class time by telling jokes, only she finds funny, which forces us to spend extra time, which can be used for other things, to learn what she fails to teach. She also assigns a lot of homework, even though the content itself is easy, so more time is wasted on this class. Only took it because required for my major.
Does not teach and tells stupid jokes. Avoid taking her if possible
Lacks social skills and laughs at her own jokes, which nobody else finds funny. My class had a little more than 500 students. Did not learn from lectures and had to spend extra time on homeworks. However, the content is easy. Just not happy about getting too much work and not learning in class.
This five week class was ALL time consuming and extremely frustrating for me. I had people in my family who are in pharmacy school and med school teaching me, and it was still the hardest class ever. On test nights, I got up super early, and stayed working and studying through the ams sometimes. If its not absolutely necessary, I would not do it.
Mya is my least favorite professor in my three years of college. she is the absolute worst and i do not feel bad saying it. My calculator broke during my final, so she kindly went and got me a new one but the final is math HEAVY. i lost about 10 minutes and ended up flunking . My final grade was a 79.7 & she refused to round despite the incident
You have to teach yourself everything in this class. You can go to her during office hours and ask questions, but during lecture its so hard to pay attention. Her mind is literally everywhere.... I did not learn anything from her. Your main priority is ALEKS which is the worst thing to ever exist. On the bright side, you don't have to attend class.
I am in Professor Normans class right now and she is by far the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. On lecture her brain is everywhere. It's hard to sit there and listen to it because none of it makes sense. The ALEKS homework she gives you is terrible and is extremely time consuming. Be ready to teach yourself this class. Hardest class ever.
AVOID this prof/class if you can. Dr. Norman is ALL over the place. Started out this semester day 1 with her having a mental breakdown on camera. Her lectures are NOT helpful. Get ready to teach yourself. Most of us were unable to finish the tests and regrades were a joke. The Aleks program teaches you more than she does...
This is the worst professor I have ever taken at the U of A. She refuses to give partial credit on exams, she refuses to work with her student, her tests are extremely hard, her homework is long, she uses an online format for homework and exams so she doesnt even have to Grade them herself. I hated this class, I will never take class her again
Don't let the negative reviews scare you! For me, the class was mostly self-taught through ALEKS. Although time-consuming, ALEKS an extremely helpful tool. This class needed a lot of attention and makes you work for the grade. Not an easy A, but not impossible. She gave us lots of extra credit opportunities, which I am extremely grateful for.
Dont let the negative reviews scare you Norman is not the sole reason people make bad grades. This class (especially during the pandemic) is mostly self taught and you should base your notes off of Aleks. Tests are open note so gather, print, write everything possible and if you ask, Dr. Norman will help you in anyway possible but you have to TRY.
A lot of this class was based off of your work on ALEKS. The only thing I did to study for exams was the practice test on ALEKS and they were exactly like the actual exams. Just get your work done on time and use the ALEKS problems to study and you can pass this course.
Dr. Norman simply does not teach. You will be using a software that you will use to teach yourself. She also doesn't grade anything herself and is ruthless about giving points back, along with that there is zero partial credit. I have studied hours on end for her tests and still get an awful grade for no reason. She doesn't care about her students.
Dr. Norman doesn't care about her students & is overall RUDE/INCONSIDERATE! She isn't willing to help you improve, nor does she care how you are doing in the class. The tests are all or nothing, she gives NO partial credit, even on questions with 5 steps/filling out charts, if you miss 1 you get no points. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, SAVE YOUR MONEY!
She is impossible to work with. I went to every lecture and study group, studied for weeks for exams, but still could never make higher than a D on the exam. She doesn't grade a single thing herself, it's all a computer. She NEVER gives you enough time on tests, so no one ever finishes, and she doesn't care. Please avoid taking her class!!!
Honestly this was the worst class I have ever taken. She expects you to teach yourself EVERYTHING, and don't you dare contact her outside of class because you won't get a response or if you do it will be SO RUDE that you will never want to message her again. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, you are better off going to NWAC chem
Get ready to teach yourself all of the fundamentals of chemistry because that is basically what you are paying for!
I learned more chemistry through YouTube than I did in her class. Save yourself the trouble and take it with someone else.
Loves chemistry, but should NEVER teach it. Always goes off topic. Admitted Chem 2 made her lose her scholarship in college. Recommended to skip a long and difficult problem if it's on the exam because she couldn't do it, 60% was that specific problem in different formats. Exams always 10X harder, nothing like practice exams.
This is the worst teacher ever. I was 1% away from a B and she refused to let me do anything to make that up. She gives no partial credit and a website grades everything for her. This website also is mostly your teacher because she doesn't care about her students and doesn't teach anything. WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!
I took Norman last semester and I recommend avoiding her at all cost. She is an awful teacher and you won't learn anything from her lectures. While I was taking this course attendance was mandatory, however if that's changed there is no point in attending her lectures. You will do and learn everything through ALEKS. She is very rude to students...
CHEM1123 is the hardest undergraduate class by far. You must know every detail. All test ?s are a list of T/F, select all that apply, & for problems with numbers you must know how to manipulate complex equations to solve for many variables. The department knows the tests are hard, a 65 average will give you a B if you do everything else.
I took this as a 5 week summer class. This tests in this class are very difficult but Dr. Norman gives lots of extra credit so even if you do bad on the tests you can get an A. I didnt love Dr. Normans lecture style but she is a very nice woman!
Don't take this Professor in the afternoon as she will often unprofessionally complain at length about being there late instead of teaching you chemistry. This professor is very obviously not focused on students at all and in turn most of your learning will be done in supplemental instruction and ALEKS. Often demoralizes students who ask questions.
Dr. Norman is 100% the worst teacher I have taken. Welcome to University of Arkansas where you teach YOURSELF chemistry. Consistently tries to crack jokes, though her lectures are the real joke. ALEKS is your teacher as it grades and teaches practically the whole class. OPENLY ADMITS she does not want to be there multiple times a class. Pitiful
Dr. Norman is a very sweet lady and is down to earth and views her students as individuals and not simply her students. She's good about understanding things that come up and giving extra credit and extensions. I took her summer class and really appreciated her. Ignore the bad reviews. Be kind and respectful and she will be the same towards you.
SHE DOES NOT TEACH!!! She uses the online textbook (which is 10x harder and doesn't explain) and her lectures are all over the place. She has a terrible attitude and thinks if the whole class is failing its our fault, guess what ITS NOT. She is not helpful in the slightest and will only blame you for not doing enough instead of giving actual advise
she is awful!!!!! In class she rambles about anything but chem. You will teach yourself everything. Aleks homework is nothing like the test. Her practice tests nothing like the test. The only thing that saves your grade is the mandatory SI. DO ALL ASSIGNMENTS or you wont pass.
Dr. Norman is smart/knowledgeable, but a god-awful professor. No extra credit, no grace on incomplete coursework, responds rudely to emails, never stays on topic, doesn't explain coursework in a way that is understandable. Provides no good way to prepare for the exams which are INCREDIBLY hard and weighted very heavy. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!
Mya Norman knows lots about chemistry, but does not spend the time teaching her students. This semester all she talked about was Covid, the vaccine, and how she is renovating her kitchen. I was incredibly frustrated when I reached out via email about being worried about my grade asking for extra credit and all I get in return is a nasty email. 0/10
Shes really, really bad. Chemistry took over my life for a semester. I took AP chem in high school, I love science, I care about my academics, and I take pride in how I do in classes. This class though- AWFUL. Its finals week and Im just so done with her and the class.
I could go on and on about her. After a semester of chemistry, for the final, there is no study guide, review, or formula sheet. She never posted the past tests with the IMPOSSIBLE problems worked out either, so most students are completely helpless. The definition of I do this because I get paid, not because I want to teach.
Mya Norman is smart and a sweet person deep down but doesn't know how to apply it in lecture. Although, sometimes she even questions if SHE got an answer right, that's how difficult she makes her tests. It's not as awful as people on here say, you just need to be prepared to work very hard and teach yourself most things.
Dr. Norman is very scattered and unclear when explaining chemistry concepts. I attended every lecture, but I think I actually learned the most from ALEKS. It is doable to get an A in this class as long as you study multiple days in advance for her tests, attend SI, and set aside time to complete ALEKS.
Her lectures are pretty pointless. She rambles on about other things and when she is talking about chemistry, she flies through the slides. She would even get her own questions wrong and not know how to work some of the problems but would expect us to know. Lots of homework and studying since you basically have to teach yourself.
Honestly this class wasnt that bad. Yes you have to teach yourself because the lectures are not helpful but if you do all the in class work, homework and etc you can pass !
I didn't find her that bad. Yes she likes to rambles on about COVID and random things and you mainly teach yourself the criteria but she cares about her students and that they are doing well. Class is not mandatory but if I were you I would go because it makes much more sense when in class. You can average a C on your tests and still get an A
I do not recommend taking chemistry with professor Norman. I had to use outside sources to teach myself all of the material. It was a very difficult class, which I wouldn't mind so much if I were guided by a decent professor; however, she likes to talk about random things instead of teaching during class time.
She was very scatter brained, which for me made class very difficult. Her methods were always different than in the book and on hw. I had to take her 2x because I failed my first semester. I ended up not going to class and watched YouTube videos, it saved me. I dont recommend, but unfortunately she was the only class that worked with my schedule.
She is literally the worst professor I've ever had. Always told me to "deal with it" or "figure it out" when I had questions or issues. If you need CHEM for your degree you'll have to take her class, which is a bummer.
She does not teach clearly and the whole class you are learning how to do a problem three different ways and only one of them is correct but you won't know until you get your grade on the test back.
Chemistry is definitely a weed out class. It is extremely hard but its all up to you to study for it. Do not take unless you absolutely have to. Kind of hard to follow the lectures as well.
Dr. Norman isn't as bad as everyone makes her out to be. She gets sidetracked very easily but explains things clearly. If you have taken chemistry in high school, this will be a breeze. The tests are easy compared to ALEKS, and it is possible to make an A while doing badly on a couple tests-- just make sure you read the book.
Unless you are good at chemistry already, this class is hard because Mya Norman is not good at explaining. She also gets off topic like every other second. I would have failed this class if SI wasn't required.
norman is one of the hardest teachers to follow. she gets very very off track in her lectures, and literally talks about anything and everything on the planet besides chem in class. when you have a question regarding content, she herself doesnt even know the content enough to help. this class is basically all self-taught.
While yes, Dr. Norman can get really side-tracked, overall, you can tell she has a passion for what she's teaching about and does care about her student. Her tests can be hard, but if you put in the work and study it's really not that bad.
Professor Norman did not do a great job at lecturing and explaining, but she provides her students with all the resources to succeed. I would take the notes and do the homework then watch videos on the topics I did not understand. There is weekly homework and quizzes for in-class points. The tests are hard but you can do bad and still get an A.
These complaints are broadly unfair; she does like to chat but knows her material and breaks it down extremely well. She's understanding of personal problems and commitments. Take the negative reviews with a hefty pinch of salt. Chemistry is hard but Norman is engaging and invested in your success: put forth effort on your end and you will succeed.
Norman is quite literally the worst professor I've ever had. She'd go off on at least 5 random tangents per lecture, and get annoyed if you asked questions or did not understand a concept or problem after she had gone down a rabbit hole. She only complains about her home life, and does not prepare you well at all. I advise to not take her EVER.
Professor Norman gets so much unnecessary hate. Shes really great. Took her for the summer 5 wk class. She let us all do makeup exams and take it as extra credit since we all did poor on that exam. She gave lots of extra credit, and was very understanding of this being a hard class. Do your best, go to SI, and do the homework and you will be fine.
Dr. Norman is a great professor. If you can take her in the summer do it! She does test retakes in the summer and gives lots of extra credit.
she is the biggest spazz so annoying but she is basically the only chem professor, everything is on aleks so as long as you are comfortable teaching yourself chemistry you won't do horrible. you will also have 10 hours of hw a week
She uses ALEKS for literally everything. The lectures don't teach you much, if anything. You will most likely be learning everything from the explanation portion on Aleks when doing your homework. Tests are hard and she doesn't give a good curve
Doesn't get very in depth with her lectures which leaves you lost for the homework and tests. She allows you to have 3 pages of notes for every test and everything is online. She rambles a lot sometimes during lectures and offers a few points of extra credit but not a ton.
professor norman isn't the greatest. her lectures are actually pointless... i just went to get the in-class points. soooo much homework and you have to teach yourself everything. you can get by with a decent grade but you def have to put the work in or you won't pass.
This class is based on how motivated you are to do your work. You will have lots of homework every week. The test are doable but definitely not easy.
I had Mya Norman for University Perspectives, and she was a lot. She is very intense and likes to hear herself talk. Somehow she turned our class into her little chemistry class, which I know she teaches. She was not extremely pleasant, but her grading was straightforward.
Literally just do the homework before class and you should be fine. ALEKS requires you to teach yourself basically everything, but if you master what is on ALEKS, you'll do fine on the tests. Lectures confused me so I just went to get the practice in class, but really going to class is pointless and she does not take attendance.
She is super sweet but extremely all over the place. There is a lot of extra credit and she lets you submit regrades for the tests. CHEM is more of a difficult subject so be prepared to teach yourself a lot since she isn't the best at explaining things.
Just look at how many awful ratings she has:/ I had to teach chemistry to myself all semester because she teaches it as if we should already know this information. Chem department sucks here.. take it somewhere else if you can.
Professor Norman didn't teach me one thing all semester. I learned everything I knew off of the program ALEKS we use for homework and watching videos. This class is doable to get a good grade but it requires a ridiculous amount of time and effort outside as lecture is pointless and honestly only confuses me more. Don't take Chem at UofA.
To be completely honest- I never went to class. I taught myself everything and learned a lot from my SI leader. This course isn't difficult as long as you practice with aleks. There are bonus points on tests. I did god awful in chem in high school and did very well in this class. My lowest test grade was a 96. GO TO SI
I attended almost every single lecture and had no problem understanding the course material and if I did it was cleared up during SI or her office hours. I think a lot of people just expect themselves to understand the material easily but if you don't do the homework or skip class you'll obviously struggle to learn anything.
The only thing you will really learn in this class you have to teach yourself on aleks but it is doable just very irritating. Try to get all of the extra credit you can when she offers it. Also she says attendance isn't mandatory but there are questions you can only answer in class which is 10% of your final grade.
This class was almost the death of me. She always got off topic in her lectures and did not really teach what was actually on the tests. You basically have to learn everything on your own. If you have to take this class with her I recommend you find a tutor immediately.
Professor Norman showed up to class complaining about a new sickness every day, which would then be the reason why she got the examples wrong. Lectures are pointless and confusing. I let youtube teach me.
Difficult but not impossible. Do all your ALEKS homework (including the practice test) and make sure to go to class for attendance and the AKTIV (in class work). attendance is not mandatory but it will help in the long run. Go to the CORD for tutoring, lectures don't really help at all. She is snappy and sometimes rude but I'm sure not horrible.
If you can teach yourself the information you'll be okay. Tests are hard, but making sure you do all the homework and in class points will help your grade a lot. She likes to get off topic and talk about her personal life, hardly ever works out problems in class unless you're doing the in-class work (Activ).
took modern chem with her... norman is a nice chick outside of the classroom but she does not teach anything that is on the test. i swear i studied all of my notes for days to fail the test bc she makes the questions so weird and obscure. she's super passionate about her job which is cool but somehow makes it super unenjoyable for the class lol.
Definitely one of the hardest classes I've taken. I am not gifted in chemistry and Dr. Norman didn't help my ability so I did get a tutor. Each time I reached out to her she was kind but I had friends that had completely different experiences. Go to class is the biggest help even though she goes through information fast and learn it in SI.
She is the worst professor ever! She literally complains about everything. I heard about the spring time change still causing her problems in may. she literally wants to make your life miserable. The only way to pass is by doing all the homework and getting every bonus point possible. She made me hate everything about my life! SIMPLY AVOID AVOID!!!
she literally does not teach anything, you have to teach yourself everything.... she sucks pls don't take her class if u actually want to do good!!!!! pls listen to me I am begging you
Norman has not good lectures, she tries to be funny but is not. If you want to jump around topics like listening to an enigma of scattered thoughts , take this class bc you're going to be getting most your info from the textbook and ALEKS explanations. She is not nice in general .Final exam is cumulative so good luck. bad professor
good luck
Okay. Here's the deal with Dr. Norman. She is super scattered and unorganized. She was never prepared for class and always left you hanging. She did like 5 problems the other day and got 4 wrong! This class was a complete waste of my time. She treats each lecture like a review, so good luck teaching yourself all the material.
She is energetic and LOVES chemistry, if you make an effort to show up and learn what is being taught it is an A+. The tests are so much like the PROVIDED reviews. She is always willing to help too!
Great professor! She is very entertaining and explains chemistry in a way anyone can understand. As long as you put in effort, you will get an A. She's willing to do regrades if you feel there was a mistake, and she gives many extra credit opportunities. She makes the class fun to go to, and she's very sweet.
I LOVE Prof. Norman! Reading the textbook is extremely helpful, but not required. She gives extra credit points for being in class on days most people usually aren't (ex. the day before a break, etc.). On tests, you can easily get over a 100% and she gives test corrections that will boost your grade; finally, do the AKTIV and ALEKS!
she was not very good at making you understand. all homework assignments were on aleks and you had to use explanations on it to even understand what you were doing. test were exactly like aleks homework. be ready to teach yourself. points for being in class, and quizzes during class so if you werent there you would not get points. no extra credit
The platform where homework is assigned is dreadful. I have sat for HOURS at a time many times throughout this semester in front of my computer getting questions wrong not because I got the answer wrong but because of formatting. It is not a teaching platform, and lectures are unhelpful unless you had a good chem class in high school and she sucks!
very unorganized and jumps around topics A LOT
Her class was very difficult, and I felt like I was teaching myself.
I had professor Norman for University Perspectives. This course was the biggest waste of time. Norman is a very caring professor, but she loves to talk and rambles on to pointless topics. I couldn't imagine having her for Chem. She is a sweet person, but gets side tracked easily.
Genuinely one of the worst classes ive ever taken. Shes all over the place, doesnt teach, and solely relies off aleks to do her job. My grade was saved because of the SI sessions so make sure to attend that.
Professor Norman, while kind, heavily depends on ALEKS for chemistry. She digresses frequently in lectures, expecting rapid comprehension. Prepare to self-teach for success in this course, investing ample time and effort to grasp the meticulous details of chemistry as ALEKS will take away your progress toward completion after an incorrect answer
If you take this class you will have to teach yourself all of the class material. Norman is a not good at lecturing she goes through slides very quickly. She gives a lot of extra credit and if you do the homework the questions are exactly like the test. She also allows 2 pages of notes on exams.
The only reason I did so well in this class is because I was able to teach myself and use other resources to learn and comprehend this course. Do the extra credit, GO TO CLASS, even though attendance doesn't matter, I can't tell you how many times she gave out extra credit points for just going that day. Honestly just do the work and teach yourself
Norman is alright but can be passive aggressive. She offers extra credit if you go to class sometimes. The tests are open note, and except for the final, are very similar to the reviews. A background of chemistry would be very helpful in this class because you teach yourself a lot of the time from the homework. Time consuming but I had over 100
As someone who struggles in chemistry, Dr Norman made this class insanely difficult. She spent most lectures getting completely off topic and rambling. A lot of days she rambled about family drama and it was extremely awkward. I would not say she is necessarily BAD at teaching, but she is really difficult to follow.
She can ramble on during lectures but if you ask her a question she will answer it and she does truly care about students. All the tests are padded with 16 extra credit points, and she'd give out extra credit just for showing up to class sometimes. Do the homework and ask questions in SI and to her and you'll be fine.
I took chem 2 in a 5week summer class and I can say I would never take a class with this professor ever again. While the information is already condensed into such a short period of time, she wastes a lot of that time rambling about her personal life. her husband, kids, mom, what's happening in her day to day. She makes difficult concepts harder.
Good professor that genuinely cares about students. Yes, she does a PhD in yaping as well as Chemistry but really not that bad. She gives enough bonus points to boost a whole letter grade, easy to reach to, and always open to questions. The hate is unjustified
She rambles during lectures. This is absolutely outweighed by the fact that she cares very deeply about the success of each and every one of her students, and will go out of her way to help you when you ask. The workload of the 5wk summer course was difficult, but this is going to be true with any professor. You might as well get one who cares.
Dr. Norman should not have been given a job at this university. Her teaching skills are non-existent. I learned more by regularly attending tutoring and teaching myself the course content than by attending her lectures. I emailed her on several occasions and never received a response. You will not have a social life when taking this course :)
Prof. Norman's class can be a challenge, but with the help of tools like unstuckstudy AI, you can stay on top of the material. The tests are tough, but extra credit opportunities abound.
I would tell anyone who is looking to take CHEM at the university of Arkansas to think twice before taking this class, this professor will give you so much homework you will never have a break, she doesn't understand how to lecture and won't stop talking about her family and private life. She is awful at lecturing and rushes through lectures.
As a person I like Dr.Norman however she might not be the best fit as a teacher. She does go off topic a lot and the lectures are pretty wasteful. I go to tutoring and use outside resources for this class and its the only way i'm passing. Its not completely horrible if you apply yourself and reach out for help you will do fine.
This professor doesn't actually teach, I've had to teach myself everything.
honestly, I teach myself everything in this class because I don't really gain much from the lectures. I think she's sweet and understanding for the most part, but often she'll start talking about something random which makes it really hard to follow. she's really nice about extra credit with test grades though!
You get cheat sheets on all the tests, so they're really not bad if you make a good cheat sheet. Besides that attendace isn't mandatory but there is in class questions (which you could do outisde of class). Dr Norman isn't a bad professor but gets off topic alot and it can be confusing.
She is an overall good and nice person just doesn't know how to teach. She is nutty and just makes weird jokes that no one laughs at. She will change the due date and not tell anymore, her tests are just like the review which is nice. Mya doesn't know how to teach new material, she teaches like we already know. I learned everything in SI.
Norman is a professor that means well but gets distracted easily. She cares if you care, sometimes she's a bit passive. Lectures were a little bit unhelpful if I didn't review/already had seen the material before class. She uses ALEKS which can be annoying but if you complete them like you're supposed to, the assignments genuinely help a lot.
Norman is a very sweet human, but an AWFUL professor. She is very helpful outside of lecture but it can be hard to reach her, she's also very passive aggressive. You have to teach yourself the entire course, and it is not easy. ALEKS, while it may be a hastle to do the homework, the homework and reviews are identical to the test, so it's passable
you have to teach yourself everything because during class she just talks about herself
Only talks about herself in lectures and the little time she is not doing that she is not teaching, just running through the slides and in class assignments. She was extremely rude to me and would not take my accommodations seriously.
This course isn't too difficult, however I do not recommend this professor. The lectures in my opinion weren't helpful at all because the prof would consistently get side tracked to her personal life and would make the lecture feel super awkward. Her teaching style is difficult to understand and felt like I had to teach myself chemistry to do well.
Do not take this class if you don't have to!!! She is truly one of the worst professors I have ever had. The only reason I didn't get an F was because of doing the homework. She doesn't explain anything she is doing during lecture, she just kind of writes stuff on the board and expects you to understand. She also rambles so much during class.
The whole class is ALEKS heavy. I was glad it wasn't mandetory because her lectures are very much not useful at all. She talks about nothing relevant to the homework and/or tests. I taught myself the whole semester through the homework and ROXI on youtube. I never went to class and got an A. This class did not prepare me for future classes.
Oh boy, in this class everything is on ALEKS so be ready. I will say she does do regrading on exams (except for the final which is why my grade went down) and you get a whole page of notes on the exams. Class isn't really necessary I found it easier to just teach myself and I had a great SI leader to help me out as well.
She can be a bit hard to follow in lectures, but looking at the homework ahead of time will significantly help in class. She cares a lot and will answer any questions you may have. She offers a ton of extra credit and does regrades on tests. Just do the homework and you'll be fine. Most of the hate on here is from lazy sorority girls.
Mya Norman expects her students to already know the material she is “teaching” and does not care to explain anything. You're better off just teaching yourself through the Aleks HW, I got 100+ on all the tests just by that, and the Aleks reviews contain everything you need for the test. Don't rely on her for anything if you have any questions ask SI
Her teaching style was very unclear and difficult to understand. She was also very unhelpful when it came to asking clarifying questions. The class also required several hours of homework a week, and more than once she moved up deadlines.
Although she is a nice and understanding person overall, the class is so reliant on ALEKS homework. If you go to lecture, be prepared to learn very little and hear more about random little things that are going on. I learned more through SI and YouTube than I did in any of the lectures.
grade is mostly based on ALEKS work, which you should be able to get 100s on. tests are exactly like the review she gives and you get an entire front and back cheat sheet. use it to your advantage. everyone in my class complained about her but as long as you do the work, study, and do the aktiv assignments you should be fine. gotta put in effort
This class was pretty bad. I did not understand her teaching at all. SI is helpful, but not helpful enough to get me an A. I would never take this class again. She IS nice though.
BADDD CLASSS!!!! She is very unhelpful when asked questions, her lectures are also no help, she can barley get through a sentence without laughing, she gets off topic very easy, the only reason I understood what was happening was because SI and YouTube, however she does give a lot of bonus. Overall 10/10 do not recommend taking this professor!!!!!!
Chemistry is awful at the UofA but Dr. Norman makes it super easy! You don't have to really pay attention in lectures as long as you do the aleks. Attendance isn't mandatory make sure you do the Aktiv. She allows a cheat sheet for the test - tip is that do good on the exams so the final doesn't matter because it is so much harder than the exams.
She's Kinda nutty. Grade based: SI attendance, exams, homework, & in class work. In class work is daily, but can be done anywhere. Dedicated several hrs per week since it's on ALEKS & only learned from YT and SI. You're basically teaching yourself. Test (27 questions) are similar to study guide. Exams also have around 8-12 bonus pt. Cumulative final!
You basically teach yourself, she is a very nice person in general but not a good professor at ALL. Be prepared to spend hours on ALEKS or going to her lectures and not grasping anything, she goes off topic completely, literally starts talking about things that have nothing to do with chem and makes it so hard to understand what she is teaching.
Disrespectful and goes very off topic during class. Taught myself almost every single topic, would absolutely NEVER take this class with this professor again.
Awful is not even the word for her. She doesn't teach. You will learn nothing. Be prepared to self teach yourself. Exams are super hard and not clarity on review. She is nice but an awful professor and doesn't help. She will belittle you if you ask for help and make you feel stupid. She just thinks everyone should know what they are doing.
This lady is pretty all over the place during lecture. She blows through practice problems pretty quickly, so, if you didn't read before class- you are out of luck. As long as you stay on top of homework, her class isn't too bad. Just come prepared.
She is all over the place and talked about things that weren't chemistry quite a bit. It got so unbearable that I eventually just couldn't keep up. She flies through everything and doesn't explain the problems well. There is a lot of reading and aleks work, but I found that the textbook didn't help. Find a better teacher, trust
RUN RUN RUN RUN FAR
Just so you know, if you take her class, it is almost impossible to pass her class or even understand any of the topics that she "teaches." She doesn't deserve to teach anyone and brings down every student possible even when they actually need help. Attendance is mandatory and you have to show up. The test are nothing like what you tried to learn.
Impossible to learn in the class, basically self-learning class. Only bonus is that we get cheat sheets front and back which is nice. When someone asks her a question and when she's solving it, she does it so fast and without actually explaining how she got this or that.
RUN!!! Be prepared to teach yourself and get a tutor. She is a nice person. She responds quickly to emails, but she didn't help with jack crap. Only good thing is she does is provide cheat sheets and that is it. I am dumber for taking this class. I am just glad it is over and I never have to take chemistry again. OMG Uark needs to fire her.
She just went on random rants frequently. I learned more from YouTube and SI. She's super sweet and caring and gives lots of extra credit, but this class was not easy. I taught myself everything, and honestly, her lectures confused me more.
She's not a very good teacher. Goes MAJOR off topic in the lectures. I had to teach myself through youtube for everything. majority of grades from test. give a lot of extra credit.
Literally if you can take chemistry at a community college instead of with this horrible professor.
If you can teach yourself you'll make it. If not DO NOT take this class.
She does not teach, she will just stand at the front of the room and read off of her slides. Get ready to TEACH YOURSELF. Homework is very important because that is the only way you will learn and there is a lot of it. She is very understanding and gets back to you over email but I don't recommend if you aren't comfortable with chem already.
DO NOT TAKE HER EVER. SHE DOES NOT TEACH I HAD TO SPEND HOURS TEACHING MYSELF THROUGH CHAT GPT AND YOUTUBE. SHE IS AWFUL. DO NOT TAKE HER.
DONT TAKE CHEM WITH HER. She makes you feel dumb if you don't understand just as much as her WITH A DOCTORATE. she cant teach basic chemistry and Ive learned more from youtube than her. I have failed every test, as well as every other person i have talked has also failed every test. Only nice if you meet one on one, but not helpful at all.
Her lectures aren't very helpful and she has an awkward laughing problem in the middle of sentences, but her class isn't too hard. If you do the ALEKS homework, the exam reviews, make a comprehensive cheat sheet for the test, and do the extra credit, you should have an ok time in this class. Norman also curves the tests and does regrade requests.
Overall she is a very nice, and a genuine person. However, she can't hold a conversation without getting off topic, or laughing. Very hard to understand what she is teaching, and makes the concepts more difficult than needed. You will rely on SI and Youtube for the class.
Dr. Norman isn't a great teacher so if you can't learn independently definitely don't take this course. The program we used for our exams was the same as the one for the homework so it made the tests way easier. It isn't a hard class if you actually sit down and learn it yourself, I was able to get an A on every exam. Literally just do the work lol
The lectures were awful. She doesn't know how to teach!
Horrible teacher. Attendance is required for participation points but I never learned a single thing from her class. Taught myself everything through YouTube and SI. She can't get through 1 sentence without laughing for no reason. Expects you to know everything before going into class and gets mad when you don't. Don't recommend her at all.
She would be doing everyone a favor if she stopped teaching. Honestly, all over the place and isn't a very good teacher. Would probalby do better jsut to not go to class because it makes me more confused trying to listen to lectures. She is very nice and gives some extra credit and points back on tests.
Do. Not. Take. Dr. Norman. I taught myself everything through YouTube videos before each exam. She goes off topic every lecture, and attendance is required. She does not answer questions fully, and just says it's "common sense". There is a significant amount of homework on ALEKS, and your grade is largely determined by exams, homework, and SI.
Honestly im not going to say Dr.Norman is good a teaching this class, but she is very lenient with grading, extra credit, and she gives an entire front and back cheat sheet on the test which you can rely on. If you actually do the hw and review make your cheat sheet will be fine.I wish the next semester luck in this class w out the cheat sheets.
Do not take Dr.Norman!!! She does not explain how to get from point A to point B. She expects you to know the material before she lectures on it in class. One time in class, she called us slow for not knowing how to do an equation. Gets off topic easily and laughs every 1-3 minutes at the most random things. Had to teach myself everything!!
she will not make you feel so dumb. i had to learn chem off of youtube and would've passed with a c in her class if it wasn't for her final. she gave a 46 question review that literally took DAYS and then maybe 10 questions on the final were similar to the review. run while you can. ark needs to get a new fund chem prof ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Immediately run. Do not take this class with this professor. When I say take it somewhere else I mean it. She literally does not care about anything to do with chemistry and if you ask her a question she will quite literally make fun of you. I learned everything on youtube and it still wasn't enough. RUN FAR AWAY ASAP.
