Dr. Cox does a great job explaining chemistry to her students. She can get caught up in what she already knows and a student may not. Aside from that, her instruction can get too technical, but she has plenty of practice and worksheets for the math-heavy sections. Overall, not a bad professor at all, but could be more accessible.
I have never been good at chemistry but Dr. Cox makes it easy to understand. She is very funny and passionate about chemistry. She cares about her students and prepares very well for exams.
She is the most annoying professor I've ever had. When she elaborates, she elaborates in a way no-one can understand. I had to hire a tutor just for this class.
Passed the class with an A, despite only taking honors chem in 10th grade. Prepares you well for exams if you take advantage of the materials. I think our class had one of the highest exam averages. All the slides are online. Shell help you sometimes if you have a question during the exam. Only bad part was that grades were largely unorganized.
Dr. Cox is a great teacher and makes learning chemistry easier. Chem is already a difficult subject and she puts it in terms that are easy to understand. Most of her students are engineers so be aware of that. She also is only accessible by appointment only. Kinda a pain.
Great and caring professor. Dosnt really go into depth explaining unless you ask. Goes through the slides a little fast sometimes.
If you have a choice for gen chem, I would pretty much take anyone else. She makes material that should be easy very difficult. She consistently does the practice problems in class wrong and takes ages to respond to any emails. TAKE THE ONLINE VERSION if you can
She is the worst professor I have ever had in my life. All over the place, doesn't teach everything on the exams, doesn't answer emails, and is super rude if you ask about a quiz grade you got or something. Don't even bother trying to take her.
I loved Dr. Cox! She made chemistry really easy to understand. Her powerpoints are very comprehensive, and she makes jokes that help you remember the material. I barely had to study when it came time for the tests because I did all of the homework to understand and paid attention during class while taking notes.
She is very unclear of grades, I didn't know any of my grades during the semester. She missed lectures and had guest lecturers. She doesn't know how to explain material and going to class created more confusion for me. Avoid her at all costs!! Take any other professor.
Dr. Cox is a very nice person, but isn't the greatest professor. She is very reliant on the slides and can be vague going over some materials. However, she does work out problems on the board. Her Canvas page is hard to navigate with all of the lectures combined into giant Powerpoints. Overall, I wish she was more organized and displayed grades.
Dr. Cox cares a lot about her students, but she is not the best professor if you need a lot of guidance. She gets frustrated if she receives too many emails from students and does not respond. I tend to teach myself well, which is very necessary in these classes with her. She is kind but you should definitely go to PAL!! Helped so much.
Dr. Cox is able to clearly explain chemistry in simpler terms and it makes learning the material so much easier. She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Very accessible and encourages office hours, she provides plenty of practice problems and extra small grades along the way that help with the material as well.
Dr. Cox has an amazing personality and lets it shine through in her lectures; however, she can talk really fast and skip over content. Chem in general is very difficult, no matter the professor. You can tell she really cares about people succeeding.
I signed up for a Monday class. We have a quiz every single day Monday-Friday and often something due on Saturday nights during a home football game. She is ruining my Clemson experience and I can not stand this woman. Do not take her class unless you want to spend your entire semester on chemistry only.
here lectures makes you more confused and she is unfair to the point that she doesn't listen to your opinions. If you do have her get a friend that has another chem professor and learn from them. Read the book to be less confused and attend her lectures because she counts for attendance.
Don't take her online course. Not sure about her in person classes but felt like she barely cared about the class or how the students were doing
If you can get out of taking her class DO IT! Doesn't explain well at all, constantly gets practice problems wrong and doesn't realize until students call her out, her sections had the lowest exam scores and she sent out an email listing 10 reasons why it was our fault...I had to teach myself everything through Khan Academy
Makes you buy the book and you never use it. Always gets practice problems wrong. I learned nothing from her lectures and had to teach myself everything for the exams using external learning programs. I haven't met one student who likes her yet. Her smartworks hw has nothing to do with what is being taught so good luck with that
During our class she would either leave to get food, bake cakes instead of teaching or just go outside where her internet disconnected because "I need my sun". She made an introductory level class hard, In all my other classes I am doing incredibly well but this class is brutal.
Absolute worst teacher i have ever taken in my life. I failed her class and now have to retake it. She does not care at all about her students. DO NOT TAKE HER! I am very upset that the chemistry department at Clemson has not done anything about her yet after all the complaints. Your life will revolve around just chemistry if you take her.
Change classes now especially if online because Dr. Princess MyCia Cox doesn't go over any complex problems and just skims over the surface of every lesson. She is extremely hard to reach, which is absurd being that she is enjoying herself from the comforts of her home. My sophomore year Honors Chem teacher was better than her.
Don't take her. There are significantly better chem profs at Clemson, so don't be lazy and settle for her, you'll regret it. Don't let my B fool you, I had to learn everything from Khan Academy. Our section had the lowest test grades and she sent us an email about how we were not trying enough and it's not her fault when it 100 percent was.
This is the worst professor I've ever had at Clemson. I was in her online section and she responded to barely any of my emails and was extremely rude when she did. She's a horrible teacher so just read the book. DO NOT TAKE HER
If I could give her a negative score I would!! AVOID this teacher at all costs, do NOT take her. She doesn't know how to do the problems herself and would correct them without fail in the next class. She doesn't teach so you might as well just read the book.
Dr. Cox just did not live up to what I thought she would be. She relies heavily on the lectures and test grades impact your grade the most. Make sure you do lots of practice problems to study and I found group studying to be really helpful in this class. You will probably teach yourself a lot of the information you need to know for tests :(
Every single piece of info sent out prior to a test will contradict itself Ex emails vs class vs study guides. She is super nice just doesn't know how to lecture and tends to not prepare students. To be able to simply pass you have to put in hours and hours of your time to studying on top of doing the homework, tests, smart sparrows etc.
Dr. Cox genuinely seems like a nice woman outside of the classroom, however, she is pretty much the opposite in class. She rushes through lectures and gets angry when you don't understand the material or ask her questions. You basically have to teach yourself everything to do well which is ridiculous considering what you're paying for. AVOID!
Probably the most unsure professor I've had. Will second guess herself multiple times throughout a lecture, which doesn't make learning any easier. She halfway explains problems, skips slides, and then gives quizzes every night over the hardest parts of the material. This was for an accelerated summer class FYI.
Her reputation is not as bad as she is. Has a lot of errors in her tests and lectures. But this means she gives points back on the exams. On average there was 7 percent given back throughout the semester. She is hard to get in contact with outside of class and office hours but if you go to office hours she is more than willing to help.
ABSOLUTE WORST teacher @ Clemson. She speaks like a student learning the class with us. Always contradicts herself. Getting A's is second nature to me and I got a B. Doesn't sound bad but it was the only class I took over summer so I could focus better on the subject and work my butt off like crazy. If she's the only prof left take a dif. class.
Shes pretty funny but other than that I can't learn from her lectures. She really just reads off the slides. Again, nice lady but I just can't learn from her.
I was a straight A student all my life until I got to her class. She isn't very helpful when you ask her questions and can be very rude. She would get so confused in lecture and half the time would not even know what she was saying. I studied a week straight before her first exam and still made a 50 WHATEVER YOU DO, FIND A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!!!!
She seems to care about her students, but does not care about the grade you get. She's not great at answering questions and doesn't explain example problems most of the time. You have to do a lot of studying out of class, and she doesn't take much time to review before exam. Not terrible, but try to get someone better.
Compared to other chem professors at clemson she is by far the worst. Quizzes on mondays and usually find out about them the weekend of. Everyone fails them and she doesnt realize its because of her teaching. Basically have to teach yourself. Be prepared to miss football games too because HW is always due saturday nights! Def get a tutor asap
Dr. Cox is a great person, however the way her class is set up is questionable. I felt like Id always end up teaching my self the material the days before an exam, and that I never really got anything out of her lectures. Because of that, it was hard to find motivation to go to class. Dont go into this class expecting an A.
Goes over material pretty fast, so take notes and write examples for studying. She gives plenty of study guides and practice exams. Homework by the unit, which is easy if you pay attention. She mixes up numbers every now and then but is mostly pretty straight forward in doing examples. Exams are tough so study well. Tough class to learn in general.
She's really nice and accessible outside of class. However, she isn't the best teacher, especially for chemistry. All her quizzes are only 4-5 questions so if you get one wrong, you're grade drops a lot. She mainly just reads off slides, so I basically had to teacher myself everything. Recommend someone else if you have the opportunity.
I would never take her class again or even want to see her ever again after the course. Barely has office hours, does not respond fast to emails, talks extremely fast in lectures, assesments do not really go with what you learned, speeds thru lectures, does not explain anything well. Avoid her as a professor
She's a nice and funny person but a terrible professor. Counts attendance, has quizzes with averages of a 40 on every single one but yet she doesn't care, and frankly just reads off the slides and acts like she's teaching Chemistry grad students. It sucks because she truly is a nice and funny professor, but I just can't learn from her.
To be fair to Prof. Cox, Chemistry is a confusing and complicated subject for most people. She IS a good lecturer, gives plenty of opportunity for practice, and is good at helping. Her lectures are hurt by the speed at which they go and a reliance on PPTX slides rather than written notes. Only real problem I had was her inconsistent HW criteria.
She acts like she knows so much about chemistry and believes that she is the smartest person in the world but is unable to teach her class a single thing. I'm only doing okay in the class because I can remember some things from high school. She regularly does problems wrong in the middle of class. We leave the class more confused than beforehand.
Nice & funny, bad teacher. I would never take her class again. Tests are nothing like study guides. NO CURVE. Does problems wrong frequently in class
Everyone says do not take Dr. Cox, but she is a great teacher and person!! I do not attend class (I sleep in), and she records her lectures so I just watch those. I got an A on the last test, her practice test are basically the actual tests. Modules are kind of annoying but they help you understand the concepts. I would take her!! Funny and nice!
Whether you enjoy chemistry or not, it is a difficult subject. Dr.Cox does seem like a kind person and does explain the information well. Lectures are very information heavy, you have a couple module assignments every week, and exams are kind of hard, but she provides resources that really do help.
absolutely awful. it is very hard to learn from her class and I had to get tutors to learn anything and do a lot of work outside of class to do good on the exams. you get a lot of little assignments that barley bring your grade up, so your grade is based heavily on exams only.
She goes very fast and no one ever feels prepared for the tests. She doesn't explain things very well and is a little all over the place. There isn't much homework but tests are difficult.
DON'T TAKE COX. Her lectures are confusing because she does not organize her information/doesn't know the content. On the last exam review, she kept getting all the questions wrong and had students teach her how to do the practice problems. Gets rude and defensive when you point out she's wrong and is not forgiving at all. My GPA is now ruined.
I'm not someone who likes Chemistry, but she did not help to make classes interesting. Do not even think of missing a class, even if it doesn't really impact your grade skipping a few classes, you will regret it later. Make sure to do well in the Lab so your grade can improve a little.
She didn't show up to office hours when I tried to meet with her, taught directly from slides, and constantly was getting problems wrong during class. First day of classes she said not to look at her rate my professor, but it tells the truth. She doesn't care about the wellbeing of the class, only her average compared to other Clemson professors.
She gives a ton of ways to get your grade up and really tries to help people learn the subject even with it being one of the harder classes for most people. She does go through the slides which is what she teaches off very fast. The office hours are hard to make to get more help. The grades are very strict since its all online grading.
She is very aware of how difficult chem is but continues with the same useless teaching patterns. Teaches straight from slides that are confusing & poorly organized. Frequently gets questions wrong, students correct her. Half her students failed spring 2022. Chem department is a mess w wrong answers provided on practice exams & high fail rates
if you don't go to class you will fail. She is not reachable by email, ever. The tests are hard even if you go everyday, I recommend getting a tutor. assignments for this class are light, a few assignments due every Saturday. You get your grade right away on exams.
Passing CHEM 1010 has nothing to do with your professor. All of the material is posted online and it is coordinated course. So do practice tests and preview the lectures. With that said, Dr. Cox is a very solid professor. Yes she is a bit 'off' when it comes to explaining certain questions well, but she is one of the better professors you can have.
She is a very nice lady, but your typical weed-out professor. Got my first C's ever in her CH 1010 and CH 1020 classes despite working very hard. Chemistry alone is a difficult subject, so get ready to seek extra help outside of class and teach yourself a lot. She is hard to get in contact with but will try to help if you attend her office hours.
she flys through the lectures. She doesn't explain things well and expects you to already know a lot. She said that the students that failed the first exam were going to fail her class and she was "just keeping it real with us".
Like many people I had to drop this class. She talked fast and was very lecture heavy. She expected you to know everything already and rarely explained. The only other grades besides tests were 1 or 2 weekly assignments that were worth very little points. The only positive thing I can say is that she was a nice person.
Dr. Cox would never answer emails and only had office hours over zoom once a week. For the homework if you miss one problem you can try it again multiple times, but you will not get full credit the more times you try. She gives about 20-30 homework questions a week, and one 10 question quiz with 15 minutes to take it. Getting a tutor is essential.
I took Trey Williams (he teaches on a chalkboard, and only the essential info, easier to follow, I highly recommend his class). I went to a few of MyCia's classes and it is comically fast-paced, It's a bombardment of information that never appears on exams. My friend thought she wasn't good enough but in reality, she was being set up for failure.
She is a nice enough person, but don't let that fool you. She is just not good at giving lectures. Reads straight off of power points most of the time, flies through the material faster than most other professors, and its not uncommon for her to work her own examples wrong. Class averages for exams in low C's. Be prepared to study hard.
Nice lady but reads straight from slides and doesn't even leave them on the screen long enough to copy anything down. Doesn't explain things very well, and expects you to know or have some previous knowledge on most things. Tutoring is the only way I learned anything.
She seems nice and funny and is clearly smart, but runs through lectures so quickly it feels like she doesn't care and just wants to speed run a checklist. Hard to access outside of class. C- exam course average among her sections.
She is very difficult to understand in lectures. She just reads off the PowerPoint and takes forever to respond to you outside of class. There are much better professors to take. If you feel confident about chem 1010 though she is a good professor to have if you want to skip or be on your phone as she doesn't really notice.
I had taken this class as a refresher for chem 1020 (I already did chem1010) she sped through content making assumptions that you'd already know the content covered besides that the lectures were mainly just her re-reading power points. Like other have said, she is nice, but I wouldn't recommend her class especially if you're new to chem.
She is kind but terrible at explaining.
Reads straight off the PowerPoints and does not explain the material. She expects you to learn more through the homework software instead of her, which fails miserably because the homework software is horrible. I would not recommend this class to anyone even if you are amazing at chemistry.
The only reason why I have respect for that woman is because of her dissertation. The fact that she is very review based (goes over practice problems) and cannot even get the question that she's asking right is appalling. I would avoid this class at all costs, Dr Houjeiry is probably the best professor in the gen chem department take her if you can
Professor Cox was absolutely awesome, I took her in a 6-week course during the summer and I do not regret it at all. She is so caring and funny, she truly wants to see her students succeed in her class. I would totally recommend taking her class in the summer. A great professor that I would totally take again!!
NO. Her lectures do not make sense & were awkward. I attended every lecture, she makes you buy this expensive app on your phone like a "clicker" for attendance & class quizzes. She is not understanding & doesn't care says its weed out class. Her class quizzes are very hard with 15 secs to answer. I learned chem from another prof & passed with an A!
She was the worst professor I have ever had. She sped through PowerPoint because she assumed everyone already knew the content. Her daily quizzes (one in class and one outside of class) were timed and had multiple parts which took a long time to do. The content in these quizzes did not help you for the exam. Do NOT Take! I had to teach myself.
MyCia Cox is a terrible professor. She cannot teach to save her life.
I thought Dr. Cox was a great prof. She's high energy and explains concepts well if you ask her to. She also drops a ton of your lowest grades, which is really nice. Go to the lectures, do HW and LCAs/ICLAs, and you will do fine. 99% of chem 1 was practice questions which we ALWAYS practiced. She might not be the perfect prof but I would take her!
Dr. Cox is very friendly but a very poor teacher. I learned essentially nothing in her class. Her lectures are really only reading off her powerpoint slides which are convoluted and make concepts extremely confusing. However, she provides plenty of practice questions and she is very available and approachable. Overall, wouldn't take again
Cox gets a lot of hate but at the end of the day, she always makes her exams really easy (ESPECIALLY in comparison to the course-wide hw and assignments) and is always happy to explain something. Shes also really funny. In my opinion, chem is just a hard class and that's why her rating is so low. She hosts reviews outside of class.
She breezes through content heavy slides. Slides are provided on canvas, but are not always accurate to the slides that she uses in class. Lectures can be confusing but the textbook is helpful, just takes extra time. Long online hw once a week (just look up answers). Gives useful practice problems for exams though. Not the best, but not terrible.
cox flies through her scripted powerpoints like no other. she gives so much homework (which is helpful) except she expects you to basically learn BY doing the homework and not through her. she is very smart, so she expects you to retain things easily by acting like you should already know the material. I had to fight literal demons to get a B
If you can, avoid this class at all costs. She knows how to do chemistry but she teaches it as if everyone is on the same level of understanding of her. The stuff she talks about rarely ever comes up in exams so get ready to teach yourself everything from the textbook!
DON'T TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU WANT TO PASS. cox is nice but CANNOT teach chem AT ALL. She goes through ppts that don't help. she gets her questions wrong when solving in class. her canvas has nothing to help with exams BUT AI VIDEOS that dont even go through half the content. LOADS of HW. at least 5 pearsons/week. also brags about how smart she is.
I do not recommend Professor Cox for Chemistry 1010. She only read off of the slides and never explained anything. She is very nice and approachable, but not a good professor for chemistry.
I dropped Chem and switched majors because it would have tanked my GPA. Look at the grade distribution before you pick your professor, this is a 3 credit hour course which means it will affect your GPA more than a normal class would. Only recommend if you've already taken AP Chem, she said on first day of class they're the A people.
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE BAD REVIEWS!! SHE WAS SUCH A GOOD PROFESSOR, THE SWEETEST EVER, AND MADE ME LOVE CHEM!! TAKE HER
Despite popular opinions, I LOVED Dr. Cox. Her classes were lighthearted, and she was always making jokes. If you go to class every day and actually pay attention, you will do fine. She gives lots of tips on how to succeed in the class and exams. The only negative is that she moves VERY fast in class during notes, easy to miss things.
She was not a good professor. She went through the material too fast during the lectures. Her slides are very hard to read and understand. Do not take this class with her.
She is very nice but she is a terrible teacher. Be prepared to teach yourself or go to a million pal sessions. Homeworks every week, weekly in class learning assignments, and quizzes every Monday. 3 exams and a final thats cumulative. She breezes through topics without really explaining and gets questions wrong a lot of the times.
She is a very nice person but not a very good chemistry teacher. If you take her class be prepared to learn the material on your own the day before the exam.
I loved Dr. Cox as she's very caring, funny, and has a great personality. She definitely understands the material, but this can be a challenging class as she goes through important slides quickly, so if you don't understand it right away you might have to teach yourself. But she does give lots of practice material and the homework does help.
Had her 8am MWF, every mon morning there's a quiz with vid cam. Never made above 33%, always
I think Dr. Cox is a very nice professor. She cares about her students and is very accessible outside of class for those who are struggling. As long as you are a hard-working student you will be able to get a good grade in her class. I did not rate her a five because some days she would be in a bad mood which would make lectures less enjoyable.
