Disorganized lectures, slides are a mess, teaches material that doesn't seem relevant to the course. Exams are riddled with mistakes and questions that don't make any sense. Avoid.
His lectures are the most confusing thing ever. He has one thing on his slides but says the entirely opposite thing in his lecture! His midterm had so many 'stupid' questions which were marked so unfairly . He doesn't seem to know his material well and his lectures are just him saying random facts instead of having a good flow!!
Hate this class cause of him!! I took this class because I had good reviews about it, but I guess that was because another prof who recently retired taught it. His midterm1 answers did not make any sense and neither does his expectation from each lecture. Yes, he has objectives but he will say out of the blue things and then say not to remember it!
Was excited to take this class but I am finding this class to be my least favourite in 4 years. His lectures are very RESEARCH FINDINGS heavy (on terms not even I know about, and I'm in my 4th year with lots of research classes). Midterm really made me lose respect b/c his questions were purposefully trick questions, unfair, and lacked experience.
Midterm open book, even with searching up very single answer, still got 5 wrong. Why? Well no mistakes on my end but rather trick questions that I am kinda bummed about. Ex. in notes he says "X located in midbrain/hindbrain", but got question wrong because the question said "X located in midbrain" (penalized for assuming hindbrain not necessary) :(
He has the worst, most confusing notes / lectures I've ever attended. Avoid unless you enjoy memorizing a bunch of research findings from dozens of papers. Exams are a mess too.
Personally the worst thing I really dislike about him is his attitude. Making us rewatch a new lectures and telling us to expect him to re-record lectures if he didn't like the first time that we have to spend time rewatching ourselves. Slides are a mess and his flow switches up between fast and suppper slow (like random 10 sec pauses in sentences)
Lots of research and "neurosciency" stuff that seems to throw a lot of people off a first. But if you put in the time to understand it becomes much easier. That being said its sort of clear he doesn't really understand all of the info he's presenting, this is obvious in the first midterm where some of the answers contradicted the slides. Not bad
Dr. Z, you are such a decent dude, I can tell, super smart and super nice. Dont take it personally, I hate writing these for this reason. But I am a 3.7 GPA student and I ace exams, but your notes are literally impossible to follow. WAY TOO BUSY and just so disconnected. Out of 5 years, this is my most dreaded class due to instructor. Im sorry.
I was so excited to take this class during the summer, but this new prof is not working for me. His notes are a mess. This class is easily the source of 99% of my stress. Absolute nightmare. I feel like I haven't even learned anything besides random bullet points that are extremely difficult to connect together.
I wanted to give this prof until second midterm before I made my judgement, and just as expected. Absolutely terrible. I have NEVER seen exams so random and disconnected. Just like all his lectures. This class is officially the worst PMCOL if he continues teaching it. He needs to learn how to teach from other experienced professors.
Was really hoping he would get into a rhythm for the second midterm but sadly he didn't. Lectures are extremely disjointed and confusing. Says he doesn't understand the content and that he's learning it with us. 1st midterm was too easy and open book; 2nd midterm closed book, pretty brutal, felt like everything was a trick question. Avoid.
His communication skills are the worst I've ever seen in a professor. He announces something in class, but doesn't send an email about it; he doesn't realize that not everyone attends his lectures. Even if you watch his recordings, the announcements aren't there! His slides are difficult to follow, and I don't think he knows what he's teaching.
He is not just the worst instructor at the U of A - he might quite possibly be the worst instructor in the UNIVERSE and I mean that 100%. Never have I seen notes and lectures so confusing. His ridiculous exams consist of all trick questions unrelated to what he teaches. Loves to say, "I don't really get this myself." How he got a job is beyond me.
Worst notes ever and cannot write an exam to save his life. He does not know the material himself and he uses studies to explain material that often contradict itself.
I understand that hes a first time professor, but this level of incompetency is totally unacceptable. Not only is communication with students TERRIBLE (Assumed everyone attends his NON-MANDATORY live session so did not announce midterm changes formally), his test questions are unbelievable specific or very misleading (Hoffman vs Hofman. Really.)
This course is a mess with this prof. Unreasonable expectations, as if he's never been a student himself -_- He expects us to remember everything from our prereqs by heart & soul and takes advantage of that so he doesn't have to teach in depth of the material (most of which is new). Disorganized lectures Midterm 2 was basically a history exam AVOID
Dr. Zwozdesky is a very nonchalant and arrogant professor. First year teaching PMCOL 305 and he's set on making the course as difficult as possible for his students. Zwozdesky lacks exam writing skills and is not open to correction which is frustrating his students. If he's the PMCOL 305 instructor for next year I would avoid at all costs.
Blames everybody but himself. Thinks asking Hofmann vs Hoffmann is a fair question. Extremely arrogant and doesnt take feedback. Avoid like the plague.
The whole class was upset with the way the 2nd midterm was written but he did not take any responsibility for the poorly written exam. He blamed us for not memorizing every word on his slide sets. He tested on geography, spelling of names, and celebrity deaths. Almost every question that was related to actual pharmacology was a trick question.
Confusing slides that contradict himself. Answers questions by saying "Im not actually familiar with this material and gives a link to a research paper." Questions on midterm are ridiculously worded. Poor communication with students. I took this class with the hopes it would be the old prof, if I knew it was going to be like this, I would have not.
He somehow manages to write his test in a way that even if you know the answer, he'll confuse you enough that you get the question wrong. think you know the name of an important person? Nah, he'll spell it differently with subtle changes so you second guess yourself and get it wrong even though you knew the answer before. Avoid for the frustration.
I sympathized with him in the first half of the semester, as this is his first time teaching. But, he has responded to student concerns with arrogance and rigidity. His lectures are incoherent and full of unexplained details that are tested. Highest mark on M2 was an A- . Students were upset, and he replied that we are all simply bad at studying..
Teaches as if every student is a pharmacology major, despite the course only requiring ONE prerequisite (which could be anything from psych to biochem). Does not explain concepts for those you have never taken pharm before. Worst organizational skills ever. Hard exams that test on spelling and include more trick questions than actual material.
this guy brought this onto himself. class-wide outrage about a midterm and he blamed us for not studying the slides hard enough. exam did not test my pmcol knowledge, instead it tested if i could interpret his questions in a short period of time. studied so much just to get wrecked by grammar errors. interesting content but DO NOT RECOMMEND.
His slides are extremely disorganized, and the tests are some of the worst I've ever written. The vast majority of the questions are made to trick you rather than test your knowledge. Instead of acknowledging the poor quality of his exam and making changes after class outrage, he put the full blame on the students. Overall very rude and arrogant.
The profs lecture notes aren't horrible, you can tell they took a lot of time to put together. It's the lack of concern and dismissal of student's concerns regarding unfair/confusing exam questions that has ultimately ruined the class for me. The exams are poorly worded making the questions ambiguous, leading to a lack of consensus about answers.
Friendly lecturer who wants students to succeed. The course material (Drugs of Abuse) is amazing and he adds on entertaining anectodes and tidbits. MT averages were high--mid 80s for MT1 and 70 for MT2 and fair if you study the slides and pay attention to lectures. I wish he taught more PMCOL courses!
He is very witty and funny during online lectures. This teacher has basically been crucified by the rest of my class because our exam was harder than they expected (all information was on the slides). Even though my classmates were rude to him when raising concerns, he listened respectfully and made changes to try and make our exam better for them.
Took PMCOL 305 this fall, thinking it would be amazing as I've heard so many good things about this class. Unfortunately, the prof that taught this class for years retired and we got this new professor. Myron lacks effective communication skills and exam writing skills, AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!
The most arrogant and unprofessional profs I've ever seen. Facepalms when students ask questions for clarification, teaches the wrong information then expects us to magically know the right information on exams, and constantly talks down to students. Instead of taking some accountability for his poor teaching and exams, he blames students. Avoid!!
He is a VERY nice guy that I honestly think is just misunderstood. He is a new prof and is learning how to teach. He had some problems with writing confusing questions on midterms but always takes questions off that arent fair. You need to know every little detail on slides but lectures are fun and interesting. Hes getting better and better!
Truly the worst class I have ever taken. His notes and lectures are very, very confusing and convoluted, but the worst part are his exams. He will test you on unfair things and details including spellings of names. He seems annoyed and angry when he answers questions and does not listen well to student feedback.
To be honest, I am not quite disappointed about his weird exam(which is unclear, misleading, and unproperly wording). However, what I am really disappointed with is that his ignorance of the student's respectful questions. I have heard from the zoom session when he said:" I made a mistake, but I will not delete the question." I was like????????EXM?
Lectures and exams are basically incomprehensible. Based on the mess that was midterm 2, it feels like he takes pleasure in giving failing grades. Wont admit his exam questions are awful, even though they are.
Rudest, most passive aggressive instructor Ive ever met. Will not hesitate to ignore your emails if he doesnt like the questions you ask. Gets visibly upset and irritated when you ask reasonable questions in lecture. His exam questions are the most convoluted I have ever seen, but he thinks they are perfect. Does not respond to student feedback.
After midterm 2, I completely ripped professor Zwozdesky (deservingly). We will see how final exam is adjusted but after a bunch of critique he has really changed his lectures and styles of teaching, and I honestly enjoy watching his lectures and the material is easier to follow. Will update after final but it follow the recent ratings (nov.15-now)
Midterm 2 was a disaster due to the last minute switching from open book to SEM exam. A lot of the students did not know it was an SEM exam until 5 days before because he forgot to record it and did not post an announcement to everyone. However, the lectures after midterm 2 was a lot better because he indicates which is testable material.
Dr. Zwosdeksy is a novice prof and I thought the other students were much too hard on him. He listened to student feedback throughout the course and I did not find it to be difficult at all. He genuinely seems nice and this class was my favourite this semester. Some of his exam questions were specific, but I didn't think that overall he was unfair.
This comment is solely about the final. Fair exam. Fair amount of time given. Fair amount of questions. He tried and really did improve, both with the exam and his notes.
Even though the first 2 midterms weren't the best, he took the criticism that students provided and he was able to create a fair final that was worth 45%. Thank you Myron if you do see this, and hope you can continue improving lecture and exam quality as you go further into this teaching career.
This is to average my 1 star from the midterm 2, he really listened to the students and made the efforts. Thank you. Still a little bit sad about midterm 2, would have been done better if the format follows the finals. Maybe we are the poineer for this seme for making him a good prof. Sad but ok.. See you in 303
Thanks
Dr. Z is a great proff. It was his first time teaching this semester and he definitely improved from the start to the end. Although our class gave him a hard time during the Midterm 2 incident, he kindly listened to and took our feedback and made a final that was very fair and tested us well on the material we were expected to know. Thank you sir!
Not the best instructor (lots of random material in the notes). He wasn't willing to take feedback from students and was really stubborn. He was very disrespectful to students during the midterm review session. Some students might say the class was rude during the review however profs should act respectfully and professionally. Avoid if you can.
I appreciate him taking feedback & making the final more fair. But some of the wording was still confusing. I'm still upset about the second midterm. Even though he took feedback it doesn't change the fact the 2nd midterm killed our grades. idk why the final had 12 lectures and the 2 midterms only 6-7.. defeats the purpose of non-cumulative exams.
The problem is he doesn't know how to teach and is not willing to cooperate with students. He got better as the semester went on and the final was definitely a fair exam but his teaching even in the last third of the class was all over the place. Avoid his classes if possible, but if you have no other option be prepared to put in triple the work.
Myron had a rough start I'll admit.. Midterm 1 was open book with an average close to 90. So he made midterm 2 hard --70% average. Then the final was VERY FAIR.. it was extremely straightforward. He took feedback and made his lectures super clear. His notes had a system where he told you exactly what you needed to know and what info to ignore!
For a new professor coming in having 0 material to go off of (university drama) and trying to learn to teach in a pandemic, this man worked to hear every complaint heard and to address any issue the best he could. DESPITE the kids in my class trying to literally get him fired because they did bad on a test he kept improving and gave us a fair final
Took this class because everyone said it was an Easy A. but it was a new prof, the first midterm was open book and the material was easy so I was undeterred. However, the second midterm was a trainwreck. it was brutal. However the final was great. He's a new prof so I suppose we were his guinea pigs. If his final is his future exams then take him!
Over half our class (150 kids) wrote/signed a letter to the chair of the department for this prof to improve. He was super arrogant and did not want to adjust his style of teaching. What people in this course don't understand is the prof was FORCED to change his teaching or be fired. He did NOT want to change. Don't take 305 with him.
Prof doesn't care about grades (no student got an A+ this year). Lectures are a complete disaster, so much fluff. It felt like everything we learned was the same. Take another 300 level bio course if you care about your grades. That isn't the type of instructor I would want to learn from and I hope future students make better decisions than me lol.
Although this prof slightly improved his lectures and final exam format following the second midterm, I do not recommend. The quality of the course was extremely poor. If you want a prof that consistently says dont quote me on it then Dr. Zwozdesky is your guy. All the drugs and symptoms blended in together and Im not sure I learned anything.
The worst new professor I have ever had. I understand new professors don't always know the material very well but this is the first time I had a prof write a question mark beside over 25% of the bullet points. Plus, gotta memorize over 30 scientific names (on top of drugs). We aren't in taxonomy, this is PMCOL.
Lots of people are being really dramatic.. every single person I know in the class received an A (the class average was a B+). I got 10% above average on MT 1 and the final and 16% above on MT2 and received an A. Which is about one SD total which is standard. If you work hard an A is very achievable.. but it is hard! He is open to feedback tho!!
Myron's class is hard! It takes a good amount of work to get an A but lots of people do. In a previous review it says 25% of his bullets are question marks, but it's more like 2 points per 40 slide slideshow with 7ish points each, so maybe 1% (not 25%), which I have seen with other profs. Alot of these reviews are exaggerated by annoying "premeds".
There were maybe 1 or 2 students that received an A+ and very few (maybe 15) that received an A . People were upset because a third year course (300 ppl) at the UofA should have more students receive an A. Plus the previous prof had a course average of 3.5 (in between a B+ and A-) while the Dr. Z had a 3.2 (in between a B and B+). Plus a narrow SD
The first half of the semester was ROUGH in terms of both lectures and midterms. After receiving help from the department, Dr. Z improved his lectures a lot and made the final very fair. You will have to study quite hard for an A if you take this (unlike prior years), but midterms and final are mc and noncumulative. Lectures were all recorded.
PMCOL is content-heavy, nothing on him but also since it was his first time teaching it, it wasn't the best especially during a pandemic. I'm sure he'll improve but regardless he's respectful & definitely knowledgeable. Worth giving him another chance. (but make sure your grade isn't reliant on this class)
Interesting class with lots of cool facts but the instructor wasn't my favourite. Personally felt he was unprepared to teach and had notes that were really jumbled all over the place. He didn't emphasize reoccurring themes right from the beginning. Prof might improve but not really sure. Beware of bad questions on exams!
I wouldn't take his poor ratings as a reason not to take a class of his in the future necessarily, although given the choice I would not do it again. He is a new teacher and learning as he goes (obviously) but he expects you to essentially know as much as he does, else, lose marks for it. The student's success is not his priority, tricky exams.
I give the difficulty 5 because the midterms were tricky and unfair (not final). The actual content is tough but reasonable if you put in work. I have a 4.0 (not to sound like a neurotic premed), spent many hours on this, got 89.3% and still got A-. Not the contents fault, trick questions on midterms fault. Fine to take if you're okay with A- down!
I feel he had trouble to begin because he was a new prof given two weeks to design a course with no help, but he worked to improve his teaching. You could tell he wanted his students to do good and gave many options for us to ask our questions. As well I've started another of his class, he is a lot more prepared now.
By now he has had two semesters of teaching experience and he has improved. That being said, he is kinda arrogant, rude and condescending to students and somehow still has a similar idea about 'lowering the average' when students do too well on the first miderm so beware. Also still has not figured how to write an exam. Notes are a mess as well.
Tests are so fair everythings straight from the notes and hes so nice he will post recorded lectures and take questions off if most people got them wrong. Hes improved so much dont even read last years reviews that was his first time teaching. He also adds little interesting stories to make the material easier to understand and lets us leave early.
When I read all the past reviews I was very worries about his class, but he's done an amazing job at improving this year and I'd gladly recommend him to anyone. He's very kind and will answer any of your questions and give you what you need to succeed. he's very passionate about pharmacology and encourages and helps his students to pursue it.
He is so kind, interesting and enjoys what he teaches. There are no ? besides bullet points and he has never unfairly tested something that has an open bullet point that indicates it wont be tested. He doesn't test details like specific numbers, just ignore all the red ratings from last year whatever they complained about he didnt do once with us
He's like the bare minimum of a prof. He just reads off lecture slides but is very clear with what needs to be known for exams and his exams are straightforward. His lectures were from 2-3:30 for me but he always ended the lecture around 2:45 so that was a plus
Love this guy. Ignore all the negative ratings. This class was awesome and so interesting and the prof was very kind and understanding and seemed like a genuine guy who was sharing his passion and interests. Tests were very clear and honestly this class sparked my interest in pharmacology.
hes definitely not as bad as some of the older reviews say, but he could work on explaining things better rather than just reading off his slides. kind of a boring lecturer as well but the material itself is pretty interesting. exams are fair (second midterm was still pretty tough tho) and he tells you exactly what you need to know for them.
Id assume his poorer ratings are from his first year teaching. But in his second year he really improved. Lectures were a tad bland at times, but the course material was interseting, and the exams were super fair.
Compared to older reviews, my experience has been the complete opposite. It's a hard course but that's just the content. Myron's lectures are interesting (coming from someone with no PMCOL background) and he has great background knowledge that helps with memorization. He makes an effort to be helpful so if you do too, you can do quite well.
He's not as bad as the previous year's reviews. When asking him a question through email, he is very concise and tries to make sure you understand the concept. The questions are directly off the slides so how to study is straightforward.
Had him for 305/305. People weren't lenient enough with him given that it was his first time teaching (in the midst of a pandemic) and given he had little time to prepare for instruction. The lectures were interesting for the most part and exams really weren't that hard because he would let us know what material was/wasn't testable.
Dr. Zwozdesky took over some of Dr. Taylor's lectures in the first third of the course, covering OTC drugs. There was a lot of material, but he really took his time to try and explain it well, and even made a few study guides for students. His own lecture material on alcohol was concise, straightforward, and very fair testing.
After the success of Pmcol305, you can really tell he wasn't interested in teaching toxicology. Guest lectures were super hard which was beyond just studying the slides. His practice questions were NOT representative of his exams at all. He would ask the hardest type of questions to all students, which left many crying after the exam.
Zwozdesky tried to make lectures bearable, but it was mostly reading off of slides, which is enough to pass anyways. 3 non cumulative exams, which were pretty easy if you just memorize content on slides. The exams were quite heavy though. Lectures were recorded and posted online for watching at anytime, which was great for reviewing materials.
The prof is alright but the course was very heavy. The questions were mostly pulled from lecture slides but there is too much information to know. Be prepared to memorize.
I really enjoy Zwozdesky's teaching style, and appreciate that he's updating his slides every year as he improves the course. There's a lot of content covered but if you're interested in the topic, this is a must-take class in my opinion. It's not an easy A, but it will be one of the most interesting and applicable classes you'll take.
Lectures are very easy to digest and study. I think he has grown to be a very compelling lecturer and I rarely lose focus during his class. However, I lost marks on the first midterm essentially for writing too large/making typos, even though I completely understood the material. Hard to justify a higher rating. Hope I can amend this later.
Rating for pmcol343. Funny guy but can't teach properly - just reads off the slides. He teaches better using his own notes, but in 343 he used another prof's notes. Doesn't explain the reasoning behind the practice questions he provides. But relatively straightforward exam questions (in 343 at least)
Had him as guest lecturer in PMCOL 343. Lectures were confusing and he spoke incredibly quickly. He did not manage to communicate the material very well. His section of the test was incredibly difficult and did not seem to match the lectured material. Very knowledgeable guy, not a great teacher.
Fast lecturer but they're recorded anyway. Interesting content, it builds on previous pmcol200 knowledge which will help you but he explains everything anyways so you can do without. Nice prof and responds to eclass questions/emails promptly. Great class and he is always updating the content to be relevant. Highly recommend!
He bolds all of the notes you need to know for exams. He does lecture fast. He's great at giving feedback and in depth comments to help students learn. He provides lots of information and makes it clear what will be on his exams. He gives lots of practice questions too that are always connected to exams which gives students incentive to study hard.
Dr. Zwozdesky was inconsistent in this course. Student's grades had to be raised ~10% due to the second midterm being poorly written. He often avoids taking accountability, and can come across as aggressive, demeaning, and patronizing. Claims to support students yet is very obvious in how much he dislikes everyone. Not a fun time.
I loved Zwozdesky when I took PMCOL 305 but disliked him strongly for 303. Although he is good at creating studyable notes, he is a poor lecturer (speaks fast and reads off screen). His demeanor is condescending, he likes to say there is no stupid question but his body language, words, and tone tell me he thinks otherwise!
Would not recommend this class to anyone who thinks this is a "GPA Booster" as this is quite the opposite (stop at PMCOL 305 and continue being happy). Office hours were sporadic; some even started at 10pm, or he would simply forget about them and not respond to emails. The only pro was that he posts all his lectures on eclass.
Would not recommend this class to anyone who thinks this will be a "GPA Booster" as it is quite the opposite... (stop at PMCOL 305 and continue being happy). Dr. Zwoz is a great professor. Course is 3 exams and all non-cumulative. He makes his notes clear and highlights what specifically is being tested. Kind of rambles alot and adds alot of extra information that you don't need to know but overall this was a relatively easy course if you put in the effort. Memorization heavy.
Had to be one of my favourite courses of the fall semester. Myron is a great prof with tests very representative of his slides, which are all very conveniently posted on eclass and he records all his lectures. He's such a charismatic person too. Only thing is, the course is VERY memorization heavy but if you plan accordingly, you should be good.
Zwoz is a great prof, testable material is clearly communicated and he throws in other fun facts too. He's an engaging lecturer and drops the occasional dad joke which is always appreciated. All of his exams were fair and reflective of the course material. I do wish he would proofread his exams though, as both midterms had at least two errors.
This is definitely a memorization course, but the lectures were super fun and the tests were non-cumulative which helped a lot. Very detailed but fair exams, and he was always clear about what was testable. The class averages were high generally (in the 80s) but I got my A with around a 90 so don't worry too much about the curve!
Dr.Zwozdesky was amazing! His exams were very easy and off the slides! The averages were really high and he is very helpful inside and outside the class! I love his teaching style, which is very interactive!
Dr. Zwozdesky has a god-complex and I've personally witnessed him talk down to students in a patronizing and arrogant tone during office hours. The more confused they were, the louder and more angry his tone got. I received B-B+ in several of his courses and still got into UofA med. If you are 2nd year or below, switch out of pharmacology.
Dr. Zwozdesky had my favourite lecturing style this semester. He is interactive and wants the students to answer and participate in class. He can have an intense tone that some may see as rude but what he is saying is typically helpful. Some of his test questions were off topic where I had to pull knowledge from other PMCOL courses to answer them.
Why is his rating so low? He's kind and knowledgeable and extremely fair
I don't have much of a pmcol background (aside from Bioch 200, where I got a B- lol), but Myron was a great prof who explained concepts very clearly. This isn't particularly an “easy A” course, but you can do well if you pay attention to key concepts he highlights and ask questions! He's very approachable, even if he seems intimidating at first.
Overall a great course! There was 3 non cumulative exams, and the lecture slides clearly indicated testable material. Questions were similar in difficulty to the practice given. Also the lectures were recorded which is helpful for reviewing. Dr. Z was a great lecturer and funny at times
