Nick is very young but teaches very well. He is very helpful and explains things until you get them. You should take him his laid back and lets you make up homework.
Nick was so patient with the entire class; He see's your hard work and effort. He is very encouraging for his older students as well, as his younger students. Math 95 was very difficult for me (at my age), but with his influence and support, I hung in there and passed the class; Without Nick's encouraging/support 'I would have dropped' Thanks Nick.
I LIKE NICK BECAUSE HE WILL GO THE EXTRA MILE FOR YOU AND RECOGNIZES THE EFFORT YOU ALSO PUT IN IT ON YOUR OWN. I WOULD NEVER HAVE PASSED HIS CLASS WITHOUT HIS ENCOURAGEMENT OR STAYED IN IT FOR THAT MATTER. NICK IS A GOOD PERSON AND A GOOD TEACHER; A PROFESSOR THAT IS WILLING TO MEET YOU MORE THAN HALF WAY AND WORKS WITH YOU IN THE LAB AND EMAILS.
Nick is very student friendly. He is willing to go out of his way to help you and his tests cover exactly what he teaches. You're also allowed a cheat sheet on the quizzes. He's good at telling you how the material is relevant to what is to come in calculus and beyond.
Great teacher. Uses class time VERY well. He carries a lot of energy for the material, and that helps. Expectations for tests and quizzes were clear. He focuses more on what you will carry away from the class than what he can make you memorize for next week's test. Most students will still have to study to do well or pass.
Nick's style of teaching is very effective. He is by far my favorite math teacher so far. Great person to talk to when you need help because he's willing to put in the effort and time. I would recommomend him to any student however, his only schedule is at 8am. too early!
I've failed pre-cal once in high school, dropped it once in college, and got a B in his class. He's down to earth and his teaching style is better than any math teacher i've had. take him, he's legit, young, and a good teacher.
There is no greater teacher than this guy. He is the coolest teacher that has ever exsisted in the U.S. TAKE HIM!!U wont regret it!!!!
He is a very good instructor. Does give long exams, but I have found them helpful at telling what I need to study more. He helps in class with homework. Has a very good attitude towards students and just seems to be a very nice guy.
He is one of the best teachers at city college. Very helpful and super hot.
This professor is very cool. He will give you time to catch up. Allows you make-up time and extra credit. Definately recommend taking his class.
he is an awesome instructor that is pretty relaxed. he cares about what you take out of the class than what you can learn for the next test.
This is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Keeps class quiet! For the first time in my life I can do algebra. Did not know that I could be good at math! He is helpful, gives time to catch up, and is so fair!
Prof. Slinglend is very enthusiastic, helpful and motivated and motivating.Healways makes time for his students, and is friendly and accomodating to all. His teaching style is terrific. I would recommend him to everyone. He made math come alive for me and gave me a good grounding and understanding of the subject matter. He's a 10/5 great teacher.
great teacher like everybody other rating said. teaches you what u should know and not what the book thinks you should know. 4 test and drops the lowest one, and a final. extremely nice.
great teacher. he prepares you for calc and doesn't teach what the book thinks you should know.
Young teacher but old school type of teaching which is very helpful for me..very clear in explaining. I highly recommend him.
Excellent. Best teacher I've had for any class.
His grading scale is fair for this class. Balanced distribution of points. Opportunities for extra credit (not easy). Very helpful and available. Very fair and generous grader. Tests are hard and they make you think. If you understand the concepts, you will do very well. Highly recommended.
Taking him during the summer is challenging. He teaches very fast, so you have to be very good at math in order to understand him. I got an A wasn't because he was a good teacher, but because I have to go to tutor EVERY single day. Go to Ivan (tutor) for help. He is more helpful and good at explaining the concept than the professor.
great professor, takes time to explain if you are lost. I'm not into math, but he made it easier for me to understand. Highly recommend (Use his office hours!!)
he needs 2 chili peppers! Extremely helpful, uses ways to explain to students in an understandable way. Highly recommend!
I took a Calculus and DiffEq. He is very approachable and down to earth. He makes everything understandable. Doesnt ask alot of the students. In general the material I learned was hard but he made goals and concepts clear.
Professor Slinglend explains this math stuff real well, make sure you keep up because there is a certain amount of chapters and sections that have to be covered throughout the semester. He is willing to help you if you need it, so take advantage! He made time over the weekend to come help students study for finals. I highly recommend him!
Nick explains problems thoroughly without making you feel like an idiot. He is so patient, even with the most annoying students. Not to mention, he is the best looking teacher I've ever had. (!!)
Super HOT!!!!!!! Hes a good teacher, hes really really nice, and reviews for his students whenever they need it
This is the second class I've had with Nick, I have arranged all of my math classes to be under his instruction, its hard to find a Math professor that actually TEACHES the material and not just redact it from the hw. He's very humble and down to earth and very patient with the class. An easy choice for me.
I took nick for 95 96 and 141. He pretty much rocks. He is vary fair, DO YOUR HOMEWORK! If you need help go to the tutoring center or his office hours. Over all he is super chill and down to earth. The best math teacher ive ever come across.
I have been intimidated by math all my life until I took Slinglands Class. Calculus II even! He is the best Math teacher I'v ever had.
Math is not my strong point at all. I have always had a hard time learning the concepts. Nick is easy going and really easy to talk to. There are SHORT daily quizzes that are extremely helpful. I recommend him, his methods make math less intimidating.
I took his online course during summer and found it to be pretty difficult. There is A LOT of hwk (I counted 793 problems) and it's very hard to learn math on your own. If you're good at math, remember this stuff from high school, and have a lot of time, this class is for you. Otherwise, I def would not recommend it.
Nick's class is very enjoyable. He is very approachable and is very willing to help whenever you need assistance. He gets a little carried away sometimes, skipping steps and going too quickly. Highly recommend you take his class and get to know Ivan in the tutoring center. With that combo you can't go wrong!
Took him for Calc 2 in Fall '10. Nick is really fantastic teacher who managed to make pretty much all of the material lucid. The tests are similar to the quizzes and homework, and he is an extremely fair grader. Decent homework load, but not overwhelming. Taking him next spring for linear algebra. Great teacher.
Very animated guy. Did his masters on Linear Algebra so he knows what he's talking about. He's VERY fast paced during lectures and it's hard to keep up w/ notes. DO THE HOMEWORK! It's rough, but it's worth free points at the end. If you love seeing proofs of everything, you'll LOVE this guy. He LOVES proofs.
Super helpful, I was worried because it had been a while since Calc 1, but he is a good instructor. Isn't always clear, but takes notes, do the homework along with lecture and you will get it. Really good about returning things and helping out. Fair grader, take him!
I am not greatest at math but he teaches really well. Besides how hot he is, he is even better when he teaches. If you want to learn take him, no regrets.
Awesome professor. Nick is probably my favorite teacher of all time. Linear had a lot of homework, and sometimes the material was a bit abstract, but Nick did his best to make the class digestible for everyone. Would recommend for anyone looking to take math.
professor slinglend is pretty much awesome all around. hes very laid back and is thorough in his examples. he keeps regular office hours and answers emails quickly. hes a freindly guy so it makes asking for help easier. low stress environment lets you focus on learning. tests are fair. do the homework, and be ready for quizzes. highly recommended.
nick's the man! i didn't love math before (and i still don't!) but he really tried his best to get you engaged. lots of real-world examples to answer the age-old question "why are we bothering to learn this?" i'd recommend him to anyone.
he is a really nice guy but i found him to be really confusing. he tended to be all over the board and explained things a bunch of different complicated ways, instead of just 1 simple way. i definitely needed to make use of his office hours
First of all slinglend is gorgeous, truly a distraction at best. With that said that he is helpful and smart, make sure to ask questions and do the homework. I am bad at math and i got a B, because I did the homework and asked questions. He takes his time to go over each topic, kinda fast paced but if you do homework then you will be on point.
I tried to take math 96 several times before nick. I failed miserably and i dropped the class. But Nick is awesome! Every new formula, equation etc. he will spend a class or two on them providing several examples til u get it right. do all the hw!easy points. And he provides a cramjam right before the final, ATTEND!Highest grade ever gotten in math!
Nick did a great job teaching this class. I enjoyed having him as a professor and would recommend him. His explanations are clear and his grading is fair if not generous.
He's really funny and straight forward. Happy to help if you ask. With Math 96, he focuses a lot on what's important for students to pass the final so they can move on instead of just what the textbook says. Homework is optional.
I LOVE this guy. At first I was disappointed because he wasn’t as hot as I was expecting but over time you will learn to love this guy. He is hot on his own way lol. I took math 96 3 times before but I failed. He is easy to understand and always willing to help you. If you try hard you will definitely pass his class
Just do homework and attend class. I have to warn nick has this nerdy silent sexiness to him. I passed bcuz i enamored with each time he awkwardly bumped into table or chair leg, his unruly hair & those blue? Eyes. I paid so much attention to him i ended up indirectly learning alot. I was too shy but use his office hrs, sit front, ask, do homewrk
He is too concerned with "time schedule" constaantly looking at watch while writing on the board. Doesn't really take the time to make sure you know the material. Like the guy, hate the teacher.
Great instructor for this class. Explains concepts of algebra in such a way that I finally understand important fundamentals that I'd previously struggled with. Grades are heavily based on participation in class via attendance and quizzes. I feel this class has helped me prepare for the final exam and the next level of algebra.
He is a great professor! Answers all questions, goes step by step and has homework but it is not much points. Grade is based on how well you do on the tests.
He's a great professor, always on time. Real lay back, you don't need to book for math 46 but you need to do your HW either online or buy the book. He's really helpful when you email him, sometimes he doesn't reply (only issue) Other than that TAKE HIM!
Prof. Slinglend's class wasnt' a walk in the park, but attend his classes, and do the HW and you will succeed. Alot of his test Q's come from the HW and take home quizes, so study those well. Math isn't my best subject, but Prof. Slinglend made this a class that gave me confidence in calculus. Definitely recommended as a teacher.
I was a little disappointed because, looking at the reviews, I was expecting for some over the top good teaching skill. He's probably an excellent teach for other classes, but for discrete math(math 245), he can be a little hard to follow sometimes. He's not bad, but just an average for Math 245 class.
He is a great teacher!!, he is always available for any questions, does a lot of reviews and practice in class and outside of class.
He's a nice guy who is willing to work one on one during his office hours. He didn't use MyMathLab, which is great for some, not for others. All homework was with textbook. Can be confusing if your not good at math.
Great professor!! I would love to take his class again. Very clear and easy going.
Prof Slinglend is very fair. He makes it as easy as it gets for CalcII. Do the homework and pay attention to his lectures and yo'll be fine. You have to devote time outside of class to master the material; afterall, it is Calculus. He is also an easy grader. He looks for your understanding of CONCEPTS. No calculator... which is good. Trust me.
Professor Slinglend really is a great professor when it comes to teaching Math 096. I hated math and dreaded taking this class but needed to to pass but he actually made it easy to understand and fun at the same time. Take his class you wont regret it!!!
Definitely knows his material but teaching is confusing. Doesn't walk you through the steps or tells you how you got therehow to do it. Always eager to leave after class plus, can't use a calculator. Has a slight humor tho. Wouldn't recommend unless you're a genius or can teach yourself. Need textbook for the homework.
It's a challenge. He's a relatively funny and amiable professor. I was a math-a-phobe but passed two classes taught by him, 46 and 96, tests are NOT multiple choice (except the final), so you need to know the material and be able to work towards the solution. He's more than willing to help you out if you're stuck but you need to ask for help.
For the love of God, don't take him unless you're really a math person who doesn't mind studying on your own. No calculator. No cheat sheet. You have to memorize ALL formulas. Exam test are way harder than what he teaches in class (he said so himself). He does give lots of short cuts but not really that helpful. WAS a straight A math student.
Highly recommend! Great professor, definitely one of the best math professors I have had. Very clear in his teaching. Calc 3 is not an easy class so it requires time to master, but Slinglend is very helpful. Really laid back and is always willing to help. Makes his quiz and test problems very straightforward.
I took Slinglend for Calc 2 and 3 and if he taught the classes I needed next I would take him again. His lectures are long and detailed but he definitely lets you know what you need to know. His test are extremely hard & you need to study for them but he's definitely a fair grader. Gives an annoying amount of homework but it's great for studying.
If you can get him for a small class, great. I had him for a class with 100+ students and he was difficult to hear and writes on the board neither very large nor very neatly, so always get to class early and sit in the front. Homework was not for credit but was essential for understanding the material. The final was the most difficult thing ever.
My favorite math teacher thus far, he's super relaxed and the vibe rubs off. He made calc seem like no big deal so instead of worrying about it I worked on it, and just like that I passed! He gives minimal hw and is very understanding with his grading. I wish he was teaching all the rest of the math I need to take!
Nick is a bit nutty, to be honest. But he's funny, earnest and will help you if you come to him for help.
Gives good lecture notes. Clear and concise. Grades homework as part of grade. Gives you a study guide, basically based off your homework, but he tells you specific problems. Curves!
Prof. Slinglend was an interesting professor to have. Paired with his dry sense of humor, classes seems to go by very fast despite the long lectures. He gives you a fair amount of homework with reasonable deadlines & the tests are never a surprise. He reviews prior to the test & makes sure that you understand the concept. Overall, very cool guy.
He is very good at what he does and shows you step by step what he expects of you and goes over material as many times as needed!! He is super nice and always willing to help. Tests are based of the homework you get and going to class is a must! Tests are never a surprise and he always goes over everything before hand!! Love him!
Took this at sdsu. Great teacher, this was a hard class since I hate theory . But He really breaks it down and makes it simple also is very understanding with the students. About 8 homework assignments, started off really hard but he got the feel of the class and toned it down a bit after the first 3 or so
he is wnderful. i had online math 104 class with him in summer .if you are doing all H.W, so quiz and exam are not hard. easy A
You won't regret taking his class, I've taken two. Professor Slinglend is a solid and fair math teacher. As a matter of a fact I doubt there are many math teachers that are better.
Great professor! Always willing to help.
Class with him was the best he explains everything very well and if you dont understand just go to his office hours and he will explain. I enjoyed having class with him and the test were easy!
Grateful to have had Prof. Slinglend as my professor. Took Calc 1 and I learned alot. His lectures are fast paced but clear. Wish he was teaching Calc 2. Tough tests but he curves and gives retakes. He wants his students to pass.
He must be useful to the upper math levels. In levels Like math043 at sdcc. He has a small class so he should be able to teach very well, but he lets students talk over him, he speaks quickly and vaguely about concepts that shouldn't be vague as all. I argue mathematics harbors an innate language in it, and he's not taugh us the language.
I took his Math 521A (Abstract Algebra) class at SDSU but he doesn't have a profile there, but he was awesome! He took pretty difficult concepts and broke them down into very easy to understand chunks. The homework and tests are relevant and pretty easy if you got to class. He tells you what concepts/proofs/theorems will be on the tests.
Great professor. Has solid knowledge of the material. Lectures do not come exactly from the book because he will teach you easier ways to approach a problem. He does not have the best handwriting. Can go a little fast in lectures. Professor is very nice, so don't be afraid to ask questions. Please, get the textbook!
Professor Nick is a great instructor. Very organized and made things clear. He explained concepts much better than the textbook or My Math Lab tutorials. Very approachable when you need help. Had 4 tests, some extra credit quizzes and plenty of time to study for the Final. Study, do homework, go to the Math Center regularly and you'll do fine.
Online course is very simple and straight-forward. Weekly homework assignments and quizzes every other week. He really wants you to succeed and pass; you can take quizzes 2x, unlimited hw attempts, and he drops 2 homework assignments and 1 quiz at the end. Great at communication, always responded to me (and other students) quickly.
This Dude Class Was Ok.
he's way too nice. i promise you that nobody else will make upper division math this easy.
He is the only professor in the college at the math 46 level that offers extra credit during regular semester. He will help you extra if you need the help but he will not allow you to walk over him, he has strong boundaries even when you try to coarse him with his favorite thing which is coffee. His writing is not too clear.
He is a good professor. He loves to give worksheets. His exams are not very hard if you get the material. There are plenty of options for extra credit. He explains a little and lets you work on your own or with partners. If you are struggling just ask him, he is really nice. He is good-looking. I just wish he would've explained some things more.
Professor Slinglend is a great professor. He cares about his students and responds to any questions very quickly. I took his online class it had a clear grading criteria and was very helpful in my preparation for Calculus. One of the best math teachers in the SDDCD system
Took this summer Math 121 online. I am not good in math but I still got an A in this class. His course is homework heavy but you can take each quiz twice and he also provided practice quizzes which are very similar to the actual exam. You have to take the final on campus but again he provides a practice final. Very responsive and super helpful!
He's a great teacher about half of the class he is showing you how to do the work the other half he actually takes the time to help you. He shows you his guidelines on how he grades first day but he doesn't use math lab for grading sheet. Homework can be difficult because he only teaches whats on the test math lab has things that is not taught.
Go to class. A lot of homework (108+ math problems at times)--done online. He teaches quickly without asking if anyone has questions often. He seems very knowledgable but has a somewhat-difficult time trying to put his thinking into words so he just writes how to do a problem and expects everyone to know what just happened. But can be very helpful.
Professor Nick is easily one of the best professors at City in the math department, he was recommended to me by my Precal professor, he is pretty funny and a great professor for Calc 1, 5 exams and one final plus 5 HW's one for each exam/chapter, exams area pretty easy if your semi-good at math, final is a bit tougher, definitely take him!
Great teacher, should have taken math 96 with him first. Took this class twice, the second time with him and I got an A. Just study the the study guide for each exam and your of to a really good start.
Great teacher. Took MATH141 with him during summer online. Of course 8 weeks, it's a heavy load class, however; he drops the lowest test grade and 2 homework scores. Also, he had a clear grading criteria. Great teacher, I would take him again if he teaches Calculus in the future.
He makes the class so convenient for his students. He is also very accessible during his office hours so feel free to come if you have any questions. His tests are very fair and he does reviews before each exam. I wish he was teaching Stats next semester. TAKE HIM, HE IS WORTH IT.
I took this professor's online Trig. class and I can't say what he is like in person but he came across professional and clear of his expectations online. He responded to every question that the students asked online. Taking an online math class takes time and dedication to learn the material.
Professor Slinglend is awesome. He gives you plenty of opportunity to get a decent grade in the class and really puts in a lot of effort into his lectures and feedback. Tests are straightforward as he properly prepares you for them with practice exams. You can tell that he really wants you to succeed in the class, which is extremely refreshing.
Very friendly and easy to ask questions or communicate with. Tests are easy and short and very similar to the easier homework questions. The homework takes a while and some of the questions are not taught during lecture which makes it take a bit longer, but still only takes about 1-3 hours per assignment. Lectures are ok but could use more examples
Professor Slinglend is one of the kindest instructors I've had. I struggle a lot with math, but Professor Slinglend was very understanding and patient. He goes over any issues you have, and he takes his time to explain the problem to you. Highly recommended.
I hate math but the professor made it understandable. Gave plenty of opportunity to ask questions and his lectures were clear.
Super nice professor! Helps a lot during office hours but doesn't always reply to emails.
Professor N is super helpful and friendly. The tests are straightforward, and the homework is time-consuming but manageable. Lectures are good, but the real value comes from office hours. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for study prep alongside the practice exams.
