She is a great teacher. Very clear in her explaining. Very helpful and understand. I am going to try to take her for all my math classes.
She is so clear and helpful. She will take time out of schedule for any help that need be given. Will extend homework due dates too if people are having trouble. One of the best teachers I have had at ASU
GREAT calculus teacher. She gives out very easy homework assigments and goes over any of them asked in class. Brewer prepares you very well for the tests which are SUPER easy. Easiest teacher i've at at ASU by far compared to other professors.
I hadn't taken a math class in years, but she made it easy enough to jump right in to Calc III. She doesn't use a textbook, but posts a link to online notes if you miss a class. Groupwork at the end of (almost) every class is used for attendance. As has been said, she'll work any homework problem on the board and preps you really well for exams. A+
I would recommend Ms. Brewer to everyone. Her class is a bit fast-paced for some, but if you pay attention and copy down the notes you should be set to get an A+. All the in-class examples are directly from the webwork. Tests are very similar to practice tests and problems. :)
She is one of the worst math teachers I have ever had. She gets easily irritated and tends to blow up on students when they don't understand. She wastes a lot of class time yelling about how we shouldn't waste class time and has a lot of other fits similar to those of 5 year olds. If you can, DON'T take her class.
This has been the WORST math teacher I have EVER had. She is very disrespectful and not easy to understand. If questions are asked during her class she gets mad because she has to explain something. She often says "I think". If she is teaching she needs to make sure she knows what she is talking about. I have never disliked math before until now.
This was the worst professor I have had thus far. She is extremely bias, and showed extreme disrespect towards me for asking questions. She often goes off screaming, and I quote "I don't care about your grades, I don't care if you come to class, If you want to talk don't come to class, I don't care!" She yelled at our class for wanting to learn.
This teacher is downright awful. she does not respond to any emails and she's terrible when it comes to answering questions. she gets frustrated easily and shouts at students when they dont understand the concept she is teaching and makes them feel like garbage. if at all possible, avoid taking her class!
Best math teacher I've ever had and if I could take the rest of my math courses with Brewer, I definitely would. Reading the comments below are quite surprising. She is one of the sweetest instructors I've had. If you have to take Calc or Diffy Q's, TRY to get Brewer.
She was a great professor, and her tests were very easy, due to the fact that she gave practice tests that were almost exactly the same as the exams themselves. She makes an otherwise hard subject (Differential Equations)easy. Get her if at all possible.
By far the worst math teacher I have ever had! She gets frustrated easily when the class doesn't understand the material, but doesn't explain it well.
I usually don't waste my time posting stuff one here but I wanted to point out that I did not hear brewer say one negative thing towards any student while I took the class this semester?maybe maybe she use to get frustrated but she must of changed. her joyful personality makes you happy just being around her its freaky.I wasshockedatthe other comet
Ms. Brewer is a wonderful teacher. She teaches what you need to know and doesn't ever waste your time. Her homework is a often hard, but you have unlimited chances on the webwork and she will help you with anything. She is a huge help during her office hours and fields any questions you have during class. Tests are much easier than the homework.
she a great teacher i like her class
I took PreCalculus with her and she talked about Physics alot. Her hw was easy but her lessons were difficult to grasp. Her lectures were useless and were not helpful at all.
She is an amazing Diff Eq teacher. She works a little quickly but she leaves everything on the board long enough for everyone to catch up. I did not struggle with this class at all because of her teaching style and tests. Definitely take her if you have the chance!
Great teacher. Presents in step by step clear fashion. Helpful and caring. Loves the subject. Highly recommended. U'll do well if u attend most classes and do all the HW.
she is a rude and careless teacher, she straight up told my class that we would get more done if we didnt ask so many dumb questions. she does not care if you pass or fail, and does not want to answer questions, if you dont understand it, she will prety much just say too bad for you. I would not recomend her ever, she is a fake
She is an amazing teacher! She clearly shows all steps and it always reflects the homework. She always has time to answer questions the day its due, so you can get it done. Amazing Teacher! I've had her for calc 2 and 3, and wish I had her for diff eq.
I was expecting to enjoy this course after reading all the reviews but I have to say that it was a let down. Sure, it was easy to get a good grade, but she honestly taught the course like we were in high school. Every day she would go over hw problems until EVERY one was answered. It was pure memorization of formulas - no application.
Best math teacher I had at ASU. She actually gave examples all class on the over head rather than wasting time lecturing. Awesome! My notes were amazing and well-prepared for each test! She also puts in curve if class fails. I got 94 on test2 but gave 15pt curve so I got a 109. She is good at returning tests. PLEASE TAKE HER! You wont regret it!!
She is nice and goes at a decent pace (a little slow but okay). However, her lectures are unorganized and when she writes, numbers and notes are everywhere making seemingly no sense. If the class wasn't so easy that I didn't have to rely on her notes than I would not have an A. But fortunately it is essentially high school pre calc.
she is very helpful in her exams its almost similar to the review. she goes over every homework in the class i would recommend her
Very helpful professor! Her notes are very thorough and gives many examples and does many hw questions that're online which she extends the deadline for all the time. Her reviews are sometimes completely different from the exams but the exams are not too difficult if you know the material. Would recommend this teacher! :D
At times she moves a bit fast, but she will slow down and help if the majority of the class is confused. She is an excellent professor, the class is hard, but it's calc 2. Her study guide outlines almost perfectly what will be on the test. Take her.
Great teacher. She is very precise on what she needs to teach to her students. The tests are almost identical to the review. She is available during office hours and encourages students to come in if they need extra help. Definitely would take her again.
She teaches differential equations just like a text book would, with wordy and confusing theorems and without actually explaining it. I haven't actually learned anything, just memorized exactly how to do these problems without knowing what I'm doing. At least the study guide is similar to the test
She is terrible, doesn't explain anything and just assumes everyone knows exactly what shes doing. She's also a complete airhead and doesn't answer questions properly. She teaches way to fast and as if she's reviewing the material rather than teaching it for the first time.
Went very fast over things that were harder to understand and elaborated on things that she already talked about several times. Kids always had so many questions on homework since they couldn't figure out how to apply the examples to the homework. Kept pushing due dates back because couldn't finish answering homework questions in class
So difficult to follow! She blows through important concepts very quickly. And she is constantly making mistakes when she does examples. I had to learn most of the concepts on my own. But if you don't care to actually know the material, she makes it very easy to pass by always extending due dates and giving groupwork every class.
Naala Brewer aka Kathleen Brewer is extremely hard to follow. Her lectures are rushed and there are confused looks on EVERYONE'S faces when she is done. I have a 4.0 and I am struggling to pass her class because she does not bring any clarity to the material! I have worked hard for this class and most of what I know is because I have self-taught.
Naala is great! She gives extensions on HW all the time, and does HW questions in class if the students are having trouble. Class isn't mandatory if you get someone to turn in the daily group work question. Her tests are easier than most teachers, but it's smart to study if looking to ace them. Acing the tests is the only way to ace the class.
Naala explained the topics pretty well, but was not very helpful overall. When it came to homework, we had unlimited attempts and if we were lost she wuld just basically do it for us, so we weren't forced to learn the material, and many of us underperformed on tests because of this.
She goes so fast I could barely keep up when taking notes. Goes over homework questions which aren't much like the tests, and didn't review for the test very well. Shes a very nice lady but goes WAY too fast. I love math but wasn't into this class at all because of it. I got straight A's in math and ended up getting a C in hers. Just not the best.
great teacher,
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE! If you do, you will deeply regret it! She never replied to anyone's emails. The dean was contacted b/c she simply did not communicate with anyone. Not helpful at all. DOES NOT REPLY TO YOUR EMAILS. The majority of her students this semester will agree. 8-week course, $50 fee, and yet NO COMMUNICATION!!
DON'T TAKE IT ONLINE! Waste of money and such a struggle! I went to her office hours--still no help! Her class was confusing and the tests were stupid. Point s are taken off if answers were not written in fraction form (which I asked her about through email, yet didn't get a reply so I lost points). WORST CLASS EVER!
The material is difficult. No matter who you take it with. This particular course with Naala wasn't easy but if you try you can receive and A. Great teacher and she made the work load easy, extended dates and the test were easy. Great teacher. I recommend her for the online course
I love Prof. Brewer a lot!!! she explained things patiently and clearly. but you must attend every class if you want to get a A+. because she put group work each class and you need to hand in after class for getting the points of group work(10% totally)!! really RECOMMEND her!!!
She is the most awesome professor ever. She truly cares about you and your grade! She is writing a letter of rec for medical school. If you had bad math teachers, take her. She is understanding and doesn't judge you even when you ask the most obvious questions!!!:)
Ok, here is the best review at brewer. . When she does her lectures she is really fast, that's a huge no-no because she teaches as if she is trying to show everyone that she knows how to do everything and from time to time she makes a lot of mistakes. her tests are hard, but she doesn't write them, unlimited tries at webwork. she is decent.
I am horrible at math If you are not interested in calculus but have to take it, take Brewer. She usually extends the homework dates. The accelerated class is hard but if you put all your effort in the homework you will pass. THE TESTS ARE IDENTICAL TO THE HOMEWORK. 2 out of the 4 tests are unproctored, the benefits from that goes without saying.
Fairly disappointing for Differential Equations. In all previous online math classes I had, Professors took advantage of the piazza to communicate and help their students. Brewer completely refused to use it forcing you to email her directly and individually if you needed any assistance, administrative or educational.
uncomfortable because she writes notes really fast and mostly I can't find the logic of her class. But this class is the class that requires students to think by the clue of logic. If you are not super smart, I have to say try another class. During this class, you would have to memorize a lot. Only memorize, no clear explanation.
She is good and easygoing
Be ready to take notes AND FAST. She does not slow down but gives you opportunity to take pictures of notes at the end. Very detailed and writes out every step. Explains math concepts and gives many examples. Provides exam review from webwork problems which are likely to be on exams. Study from reviews, complete webwork, and you will pass.
Pretty good professor and definitely willing to help, but if you aren't willing to help yourself you'll have a hard time. To do well on the tests, you have to demonstrate FULL understanding of the content, not just the basics. I made that mistake on my first test but came back and got a high B at the end of the semester.
She's a good teacher and explains the concepts well she goes straight to the point of teaching the lessons. She is more than willing to help you on the hw, if you attend office hours. In general the probability of student doing well by just doing the hw and going to class is low. You need to study on your own and go to tutoring
Not a terrible teacher. My only major concern was the lack of communication for issues on tests. I had two tests with technical issues and she was unresponsive both times when I tired resolving these issues. I feel if you have a test scheduled, you should be prepared to help resolve issues. That alone is what caused my mediocre rating.
Very organized and straightforward class. Lectures are important and given clearly, and tests are based off of online homework and lectures. She is understanding and nice, I really liked that homework is all online through WebAssign. Some methods of teaching are a little strange but overall very good and she is open to doing problems different ways
This course is extremely hard if you don't have any past experiences in calculus. The textbooks aren't very helpful, I managed to understand the course by using help me solve this. However, the instructor is one of the best. She replies to your questions immediately. She is knowledgeable and will do her best to help you.
Brief calculus is going to be difficult no matter what. I am currently taking another Calc class online at ASU, Brewer I would prefer. Stay on top of things, nail down your pre-exams and you should be good for exams(2). Offers extra credit at end, makes this class as enjoyable as possible.
Took her MAT211 course online through MyMathLab. If you procrastinate, have trouble understanding material without good lectures, or simply hate extremely structured online classes where it forces you to learn a specific way, do NOT take this class. It did not fit for me because I work part time and this class requires a few hours a day at least.
Tons of work and won't help other than referring students back to general student resources at the school. Very rigid. If you don't get it, good luck as she has no mercy nor will provide extra help. Memorize and spend every ounce of time in class or it's not going to go well. Hardest course in 3 years and its only algebra.
Took her because I read that she was solid. Couldn't disagree more. Mathlabs often do not contain "examples" or "help me solve this" features. Homework everyday for 6 weeks plus exams and written problems. Lectures were good, but it wasnt her. Hard to get ahold of late when you need help. Do assignments waay in advance, like get a week ahead.
She knows a lot about calculus but she expects you to get the problems right away. During class she goes so fast that it is hard to keep up and understand what she is doing at the same time. Her office hours were terrible and she unavailable after class so good luck trying to find a time to meet with her. She's not the worst but not the best either
AVOID taking her if you arent great at math or arent fine with a fast pace. She goes through problems so quickly students have a hard time keeping up and understanding. The 2nd exam class avg was 57%. The tests are really tough, they take many points off for little things. Take another teacher if you have an option. she also doesnt curve.. a 57%
Professor Brewer gives some of the fastest handwritten notes/lectures Ive ever seen, but she stops for questions regularly. Her reviews on webwork are very useful in preparation for the exams. Attendance taken each class through a practice problem.
She is not flexible, so you better finish everything on time and ahead of time if you want to do well. She doesn't curve or at least not with the people that she dislikes. She is very rude, she delete post from her website when people want to discuss grades. You do not need to buy the book. The class is not hard but you better finish on Time.
Would never take a class she taught again. Absolutely not interested in helping or doing anything extra. I'm hoping this was not the norm for her.
Ms Brewer has, in the first two weeks of class: Heavily implied that any students talking outside of the Piazza forum will be considered cheating, answered a student's "how do I..." question with a short referral back to the course material and a statement of "do the homework again to practice," and not shown any desire to actually TEACH her class.
Ms. Brewer is a terrible online instructor. The MAT265 course is generally the same across all the different professors, but Ms. Brewer made constant mistakes during office hour videos resulting in massive levels of confusion prior to exams. She also has yet to post the final exam review and the final exam starts tomorrow. What a joke.
Ms. Brewer was very attentive and attending her office hours was fundamental to my success in this course. I was really worried about this class before I started but if you stay on top of the Webwork, you should be fine. Test questions are very similar to those on the homework, so really understanding your homework is essential.
Professor Brewer held frequent office hours. She notified students in advance and sent out recordings later. The class is, of course, challenging, but Professor Brewer was very helpful. If exam answers were near enough to the final solution, she gave out partial credit. You are also awarded extra credit if you score A, B, or C on the Final exam.
Never had a professor that was so out to lunch mentally before. She gives her lectures at the speed of light and makes mistakes that other students and I would have to correct, never had a teacher mess up so many times, or say oops as often. Hard to believe this woman has a Phd in anything, let alone mathematics. Avoid like the plague.
She was okay I guess, sometimes a little sarcastic. The course is not really taught by her, but by a different professors via lectures on Canvas. Beware, there's a ton of homework, but the exams are heavily based on the homework, so if you can work through all the homework problems you'll be golden.
Homework workload was insane, similar to IEE380. Class is pretty standard, nothing weird. Just put the hours in and you should be fine
Pretty decent prof, she is really nice but does not teach the course. She just puts videos for credit teaching the module and then has really long office hours before every exam to help students. There is a lot of hw, but I would not say it is horrible, since the exams are the same as the hw. 2/4 of the exams are not proctored as well.
Do not take if you can avoid! Her lectures were awful did not make any sense when solving problems has no teaching ability just solves problems and always makes mistakes. Does attendance with group assignments. Not a good test grader either.
This class is tough but the professor reviews homework problems and potential test questions. The tests are difficult and there are no cheat sheets, but the notes help. The homework is easy. My biggest complaint is that she goes through the notes extremely fast and harshly grades tests and group work. The MATLABs are also bad but that's not on her.
This was by far the hardest class I ever took. There're exit tickets, hw assignments almost every class, MATLAB labs, and 3 exams in total. She monotone all the way through the lecture and her way of explaining was different from the homework. Doesn't allow cheat sheets which are NEEDED. Overall, it's ok until the tests (pure stress).
I loved this professor I like the Edfinity program used for homework because it provides solutions to similar problems, making homework easy. If you pay attention, you'll do good. I recommend taking MAE 215 before this because it will make the MATLABs easier to do which takes a lot of time. Her lectures are basically homework problems. I recommend!
The only reason I attended classes was for the daily quiz, otherwise it was useless to. Everything that is needed for the class is more easily learned online (not to the fault of this professor, I think this is just how diffeq is). So, prepare to waste 75 minutes two days a week, and put in a minimal effort to get a good grade.
Professor Brewer is great! She teaches by first teaching conceptually and then solving example problems from the homework. I really enjoy this method of teaching and learned a lot from Professor Brewer. The Matlab labs can be confusing but the TAs are very helpful during their office hours. Final exam had EC if we got an A or B, and EC matlab lab.
Her lectures are fast paced, but very detailed and helpful for the homework and the tests. There is a lot of homework and the tests are medium hard, wish there was extra credit.
Assistance was regularly posted in discussion group and included detailed explanations. I rated the difficulty high due to no notes allowed on exams and the topic tsunami. Do NOT take over a half-summer semester, HUGE mistake! 21 topics in 40 calendar days, 334 homework questions, 3 exams. 150+ hours! Squeaked by. Low C. Regularly A's
Just took this over Summer A - I suggest avoiding at all costs because learning Calc II in a month is a difficult feat. I have some gripes with how ASU's math program functions- too fast paced, lectures are confusing, etc. BUT Prof. Brewer supports her students! I had a serious illness right before the final and she was very accommodating.
You cannot come to this class expecting to learn anything if you have no prior knowledge on the subject. You have to study before you get to class and study right after to survive especially if you are new to calc.
Just dont take her please, strict as hell. 0 it late submission for whatever reason. No work? 50% points gone woohoo! Lecture is so fast and her handwriting omg.
Worst professor I've ever had. Her lectures are just straight up useless. Never learned a thing from them because she goes so fast that you either have to choose to take notes or listen to her. It says a lot that my routine for her class was to watch Organic Chemistry Tutor before and do homework during it. Do not take her.
Goes through the content very fast and the homework is hard to understand and isn't fully covered sometimes. Even the math tutors had trouble answering the homework questions. There is extra credit on each homework if it is submitted early. Review day before each exam with similar questions covering what you need to know
Beware. She'd spend 10-15 minutes during office hours with multiple students on, then sped through questions like she had somewhere else to be. She didn't grade the work submitted with exams (everything auto-graded) and didn't take time to schedule assignments well, with multiple items due everyday or every other day. I wonder what she did at all.
Very test heavy. No late submissions. Homework is due every other day. Provided lectures were unhelpful. Responses seemed sarcastic. Would not recommend.
Basically beatboxes into the mic the whole lecture and talks about how she failed fluid mechanics and her Georgia tech professor killer cain. Gives no partial credit at all on exams and they are nothing to do with the edfinity problems. TAKE THE ICOURSE!
Horrible. I learned more about her life story and how she switched from aerospace engineering to a math degree 40 years ago because she failed fluid dynamics more than I learned about linear algebra. Her tests are way harder than the homework. Attendance is mandatory with a quiz at the end of every class graded on accuracy for the day's lecture
Professor Brewer goes pretty fast in lectures, reviewing the theory or proofs, then spends most of the day doing examples from the homework. Attendance is required for the exit ticket question due before class ends. If you do the exam reviews she provides, the exams have the same type of questions. She is helpful and will answer questions.
She is a fair teacher. During the class, she gonna give you examples to work, these examples are taken from Edfinity. You also need to do group work at the end of class for attendance (really easy). For the test, she gonna spend 1 class to review for you. Stay focus in the class, she goes through problems pretty fast.
bro put sum effort in this class bruv if u put like 1hour a day teaching properly instead of those MID playposit videos AND the reviews, they weren't useful but it helped me learn the concept, like professor or dr. Brewer can easily be the best if she put a lil more effort. But yeah pls put more effort i see so many ppl failing this class
Professor Brewer is really nice and doesn't waste your time in lecture. She does a review session before exams and gives you all the concepts that will be on test. Anyone who dislikes her is just lazy or never pays attention. She is super sweet and knowledgable.
so much hw
Have to show up every day to answer easy problems at the end of class. MATLABs suck, but do average on em and you'll be fine in the class ( I got 2-3 Cs/Ds ). Has a whole class period review session before each of 2 midterms. Gives extra credit .5% added to grade or 1% if you get a B or A on final. Do study guides and it'll be fine.
Save yourself, worst semester of my life.
She isn't good at explaining concepts, since she's going very fast. Although I got a high grade in this class, this is because I've already learned the material in highschool, 50% of other students are struggling. It's not that you will likely to fail this class, but if you're not a good and/or hardworking person. You may likely need tutoring.
Didn't like her at first as she is a bit fast paced and dry in her lectures. However, she arrived to every class 30 minutes before in case students needed extra help along with extra credit on finishing the homework early. Typically covered example problems in class.
I really like Prof Brewer because she teaches by giving examples and steps rather than just explaining concepts. The practice exams she gives for each midterm are extremely similar to the actual midterm too, just practicing those is enough to pass. Plus, you can always look back at her zoom lectures if you don't understand how to do the problems.
There are daily quizzes, so make sure you go By far the easiest math class I have ever taken, the tests are pretty much the study guide with different numbers Lectures are mostly example problems
practice tests are gamechanger
Professor Brewer is a caring instructor who clearly wants her students to succeed. She consistently went over practice exams and took time to explain material, which I appreciated. There were moments where I felt a bit lost, but it was clear that she was trying to help and was approachable.
Didn't like this class one bit, barely managed to pass. her lectures did not help one bit, she rushed through things and didn't explain everything clearly. Everyday there was either 1 quiz or 1 group work so if you didn't show up one day you wouldn't get those points. Very exam heavy but she does replace your final exam grade with your lowest final
