Great teacher. Straight forward, clear notes that are well related to text book. Gives tons of examples. Exams are extremely fair, if not easy. Do all practice problems in text to get A. He doesn't expect too much, but do know basic chemistry(functional groups). Avoid asking stupid questions, he gets very aggitated. Be prepared before seeing him
Very helpful and very approachable. Although, its hard to pay attention to what he says, cause he's got quite the physique...that and a nice accent...ahem. But yes, he likes what he teaches, and that makes him good at...teaching it...
This Frenchy is a cool guy. He is extremely helpful, and yes..he doesn't like stupid questions..but who does? Will force you to think, but not kill your brain. Overall an excellent prof.
worst prof ever!! he will yell the crap out of you so be awared!! personally i don't like his pushy style of teaching. He will throw you a bunch of unoticed quizzes which you will fail if you r taking other courses at the same time,or may be you can ace them if you wanna fail the other courses. He will eventually give u an A when u r tired to death
A great teacher- he made a potentially very difficult subject straightforward and very approachable. He wants students to do well and understand the concepts. A really good prof. Just be sure to show initiative in his class and do your homework- a lot of exam problems come from the book.
Lecture material is clearly organized and is quite informative. I DID learn quite a bit of useful spectroscopy in this course. However, his marking is quite hard and you can lose a lot of marks quite easily for what would be minor mistakes in other courses. Lab material has become tougher since I took the course, so I can't comment on that.
One of the best profs i have ever had. I could understand where some of the other comments were coming from but that is his method. He is always approachable, always ready to help you learn, But don't go to him unprepared expecting him to reteach you everything, he'll throw you out of his office! All in all I have learned the most from his class.
he is a nice guy. awesome person to chat about anything with. he's got a very down to earth personality. very real. it's a pleasure to have around in chem department. very approachable. great music collection!
I don't recommend anybody to take chemistry 282 with Dr. Merbouh. He is very hard. Everytime he teaches this course, he examines his students not only on the chem 282 materials, but also on ALL OF THE CHEM 281. His midterms are extremely hard and challenging. He does not provide any sample exams. On my first midterm, the class average was 40%.
He is one of the best prof i ever had. Because of him, I actually enjoy chemistry now.If you want to learn chemistry take it with Dr. Merbouh
At first he seemed to be a very scary prof, but after you get to know him he's an excellent teacher! If you approach him during his office hours or in lab, he will gladly help you with any question you have. Just make an effort on your part first before going to him. He's your professor, not your high school teacher, he's not going to spoon feed yo
very very approachable. good teacher. course itself is very difficult so its not his fault if u do bad in his class. one of the fewest profs who actually know how to teach. and super goodlooking. i think thts why all the girls attend the class.
for the whiners -- organic chemistry is standard university subject of considerable difficulty... get over it; exams will be hard. merbouh is not trying to be an ass, he's trying to motivate you. moreover, only a fool would criticize an academic for their english ability... intelligent ppl come from non-north american countries as well... surprise!
He is a good prof but he is so disorganized, his exams are hard ( average was 40 ) I hope he wont make the final so hard. If he makes it as hard as second midterm, then I guess half the class will fail and end up taking this class in summer again. Overall he is an approachable person to answer your questions. Do not scare to ask question, he is al
best prof ever! makes chemistry actually intresting to learn.. i hear he doesnt have much core strength though!
His lectures are pretty much him throwing reaction mechanisms at us without explaining anything. Furthermore, if you go to his office hours, he won't answer questions, he'll just tell you to go look at your text book and make you feel dumb.
This professor was one of the best chemistry professors I've seen by far! His teaching ability is amazing. He can take a very abstract idea and simplify it so that even a child can understand it. Not only does he teach you properly, he also does an amazing part by not putting you to sleep. Definitely take his class!
I don't know why people seem to have a problem with him. I find his lectures to be extremely clear and helpful (I understand several concepts a lot better because of his 'guest' lectures). He wants you to really think about the chemistry rather than just sit there not taking anything in during the lecture, and it helps a lot. Excellent prof.
He is a good person overall. His strongest points are: He knows his stuff and does his best to explain it to his students. Weakness: He should be a teacher rather than just a lecturer. "Having a PHD puts you in a leadership postion but does not make you a leader",so I think that he should try to make his students comfortable around him, not scared.
What the hell is wrong with this professor! He should not teach. I recommend that you take the course at the Surrey campus. Simply, he is the worse at SFU.
Good man!
At first, was scared of this guy fro all the hype, but he ended up as an awesome teacher. I look forward to this class every week. He may be a hard ass, but half the time he doesn't even mean it. 282 is hard with any prof, but definately take 380 with Dr. Merbouh. (He didn't yell at us at all...it's all hype!)
Goes to extremes to try to get you interested and working on the subject matter. Gave us a not-for-mark 'quiz' the first day that had an average of 20%. Regardless, the exams and teaching style are straight-forward, with 75% of the questions coming from the text book. Pay attention, think before you speak, and you'll do fine. Would take again.
I think he was a bit hard (only cause i have a hard time being awake at school no matter what class it is), but an extremly nice person and very down to earth. Plus he is really really cute ;-) So it made going to class all the worth while.
merbouh is a great prof. he is really there for the students - he wants you to learn and be successful and committed to CHEmistry - but he also expeCts you to do the hard worK and practice. this is probably the Most fun class i've taken. it's "tetris with functional groups" as nabYl likes to say. Best cLass/cOurse, Great prof.
Very funny, helpful and charming!
sweet heart if you ACTUALLY get to know him. Yes he has a mean exterior
He's the lab prof. Really funny and tries to get you interested in the subject. Can seem a bit intimidating, but he really is a nice guy. His explanations are very clear. Think before you speak!
I'm in his 286 class now, he is trying to help us out as much as possible, which we all appreciate. Unfortuently, I dont think many of us know what we're doing given our limited lab experiance.
In the first lab he said, I don't care what you do, as long as you are safe and have fun. And he meant it. He said he cares more about you learning the lab procedures rather than all the fancy theory cuz we learn that in lecture. He is the easiest lab professor I've ever had and also the nicest. Would highly recomment him.
Just an awesome guy.
extremely moody, Yells all the time, he is good in his good days and really really bad in his bad days.he is a good prof, lab lecture are usufull but attitude is ....
best prof ever!!!!!!!!!!! Extremely friendly and helpful.Makes the lab procedure extremely easy to follow. If you like a laid back instructor he's the one to take.
During lab Merbough loves to go around saying "Young man"! Very annoying and rude... More than anything he really loves making people look dumb.........
you MUST try to understand the concepts yourself before asking for help. he will not give you the answer, but will try to make you figure it out yourself by asking you lots of questions. if you don't understand what he is saying in his mini lecture, ask questions then, he will gladly repeat himself to the class as a whole, rather than to individual
Very helpful, was able to explain things quickly and effectively that other profs would take entire lectures to try to explain. Fair marker.
he will destroy you if you do not know ur stuff. So he is very moody in a way. Marking is somewhat fair depending on which TA..The lectures he gave before lab was good and sometimes funny. Make sure you get to know your lab partners well for this course! The practical final is given randomly, as in doing a random lab, be sure to make good notes.
Overall a pretty nice professor; I have not experienced any 'tantrum issues' with him as other students have stated. His lab briefings are extremely clear and concise: anything important or likely to affect the outcome of the lab will be pointed out. Try to read labs beforehand to have a better idea of what is required and everything will be ok!
EXTREMELY RUDE to some students. Picks favourites in class. Has a manger issue as well. Avoid at all cost.
I think Nabyl is awesome. Yes, it's true that he'll yell at you and humiliate you in front of everyone... but that just means you're asking for it. Don't ask dumb questions, think about it first. He'll explain something numerous times if you need it but not if you're looking at him like a deer in the head lights. His exams were fair if you studied.
Nabyl was a great prof. Explained hard concepts in a simple way that no other prof so far has been able to. If he yells at you, you deserve it. If you think he's rude, you have no sense of humor- he's just sarcastic don't get your panties in a knot. And if you're annoyed he wants you to know chem281 stuff- it's a prerequisite, what do you think?!
It takes a lot of dedication to schedule a nmr review session in the evening for students who are not even taking your class. Dr. Merbouh is one of the few science professors who knows how to teach. Perhaps he is annoyed with the students' general lack of understanding, yet he makes a sincere effort to help and THAT'S WHAT COUNTS. He's also hot!
amazing prof! very clear when lecturing, midterm is straightforward, and makes experiments interactive and fun.
Pretty much all comments are accurate. Amazing prof...makes things crystal clear. One thing he hates more than anything is student who cruises into lab unprepared. If you're scared he'll ask you something, BEWARE! He has uncanny knack for smelling your fear & will crucify you. Hilarious unless directed at you! Hi to Merbouh senior (He reads these)!
Merbouh has an uncanny ability to keep me awake during his lectures, no matter how sleepy I may be. He is straight-forward, and crystal clear on what needs to be done for class, and expects you to put in a good effort. He keeps the class entertained, and loves to highlight organic reactions by calling them the "typical poster boy".
My favourite quote he says: If I can't outsmart you, I will outwork you. This man is an inspiration
You must work extremely hard to succeed in his class however, he does reward your hard work. Gets his message across very well, and the notes are informative especially if you fill in all of the extras. Helped me out HUGE with doing well in O-Chem. Thanks DR. Merbouh!
he is a great prof! lectures are interesting and he has a good sense of humor! he is kind of hot (obviously cuz he is french;)!
I don't know what he was like back then, but right now, he's one of the most condescending professors I've had the pleasure of meeting. His lectures are great, but his tests need to pertain more to the course material he went over in class and tutorials. He needs to learn what "scaling" means (hint: it's not about screwing over the top students)
He can be a hard prof, but he tells you what to study for. And if anyone says he's brutal that is because O Chem is not an easy course, follow the book and you'll do fine.
Dr. Merbouh is a really amazing prof. Sure he yells at students sometimes (I've been yelled at too!), but he really cares about whether we understand stuff. That's why he schedules review sessions and encourages questions. No other prof devotes this much time to giving extra help, and for that he deserves good ratings. Pretty hot too ;)
O Chem is not an easy course. Work hard and you get what you deserve. I've seen people go to his office hours and ask stupidest questions ever (read the book, people). I would so yell at them too. He does make sure we understand all the concepts. His lectures are very interesting and entertaining (awesome sense of humor). Girls love him (soo HOT:P)
One of thee best profs at sfu teaching organic chem, would definitely recommend him. Sure he yells but he wants you to get the message across and wants u to learn to ur full capability. His exams are pretty fair in my opinion, but u will never be bored in his class if u are he can smell it in the air and will call u out, he loves the Canucks aswell
You get what you get. If you don't study, you will fail. And be aware on the tutorial quiz. I can't believe one tutorial quiz is worth 5% of the whole term. I didn't attend that tutorial and ends up being rejected from A. I got an A-.
Picks favorites in class. Extremely rude to some students. Avoid at all cost!
BEST PROF THERE IS
he is the best prof out there! trust me, you will learn a lot if you have me! he pushes you to work hard and it is worth it. his exams are fair- he tells you beforehand whats on it! lectures are interesting, he has a sense of humor and sarcasm (get used to it). YOU HAVE TO TAKE ORGO WITH HIM! MY WORD! NO OTHER ORGO PROF AT SFU IS BETTER THAN HIM.
Best Prof I have ever had at SFU. Hard as hell, and you will fail if you don't bust your ass, but still somehow the best prof I've had. Great teacher, genuinely cares if the students can understand, and always tries to make lectures interesting.
So great! Expects a lot from students and there is a lot of homework required. You definitely need to attend lectures to know what's going on but he is pretty funny and his french accent will charm you!
Great prof! Funny guy, but might be a bit rude to a few students. Don't ever fall asleep, or take your phone out in his class, as he will kick you out. His exams are not too hard, but he scares you into studying for them. If you put the effort into the course, you will get a really high grade. You don't need to be smart, just hard working (srsly)
First of all let me say...THIS MAN IS SEXY!!! yes i know that is innappriate for me to say..but lets be honest here, I enjoyed watching him give lectures rather then listen to him lol. on the other hand, he's a wonderful prof. INTIMIDATING at times but you really knows how to get the message across...HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM...MY FAVORITE TEACHER YET!
He's one of the best profs I've ever had!! :)
Great lectures, clear powerpoint, and lots of examples done in class so you know exactly what he is looking for on exams. Midterms/finals difficult but fair w/ some questions straight out of tutorials/lectures. Runs his class better than any prof at SFU w/ zero tolerance for texting, chatting, etc. Came recommend and would recommend
Merbouh is intimidating, and has no tolerance for laziness, but if you stand up to him, and show that you're working your butt off, he will respect you. His lectures are clear, and only the NMR exam is too difficult. The rest were very fair. The course is tough, but if you go for help, he will help you. And try to get into his lab! It helps!
great professor, he tells you in his lecture whats going to be on the test, and before each exam he reviews the material out of his own personal time. i know he is a bit intimidating but that is his style. he was highly recomended and also will recomend unfortunate that he took the summer off or i woul have taken 282 do as many question from book.
It's like one day a rugby player drank a bottle of Francium and was granted with chemistry powers by the science gods but ended up with a fatal weakness for students' ignorance and thus to quench his thirst for justice must destroy said students with extended rants. If you work hard though your sacrifice will appease him and he might let you live.
Theres no doubt hes a good lecturer and understands the material, but when it comes to teaching a lab he is as incompetant and unhelpful as they come. Lacks one-on-one people skills, gets angry with students frequently, is unreasonable and doesnt answer questions.
The previous comments that say Merbouh gets angry/is mean are written by people with no sense of humour. Merbouh is tough, but does it so you do well. He's not being mean, he's just joking around and likes to make fun of the students. If you can't take it, university is not for you. Merbouh is the most helpful prof I've had.
Merbouh is by far the best organic chemistry prof at sfu. Not only did he make his lectures interesting but you actually wanted to attend. This class is a lot of work but Merbouh does a great job of telling you exactly whats on the test and hold review sessions for additional help. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
I failed this class with Bennett last term and retook it with Merbouh & got an A-! Best prof I've had at SFU, hands down. Finally a prof who can TEACH! It's impossible to fall asleep in his lectures & he's really intimidating but really funny too. Go to ALL lecs & do all tut Qs. If you respect him & work hard, he will reward you with a good mark.
Merbouh is a good prof!Very hurmourous and many girls love him! His exams are easy and he likes holding many review session before Final.Unbelievable that I got a C+ in this course!i got final of 58% but average is ard 70%,thought i would fail.Although he is easy to lose temper and make you afraid him, but he'll let you pass!
He's an amazing instructor. Easy to follow, clear on expectations, and funny. It's an easy A for the lab unless your a very bad chemist. He can be intimidating at times but when you talk to him , he's very sweet and down to earth.
Best prof I've ever had. Funny, speaks loud and clearly. Difficult course but not bad if you keep up.
Merbouh is a phenomenal prof. If you want an Ochem Prof Merbouh is the one you want. He is tough, but with keen dedication the material isn't too bad; it is just dense. Read your notes ahead so you're not overwhelmed by reactions. Merbouhs passion for chemistry and good humor make lectures entertaining; however, attendance is necessary! Lab is easy
Best prof I've had at SFU so far :) Great lecturer, and holds tons of review sessions. Merbouh genuinely cares about his students and wants them to do well. He also really funny and easy-going, people who say he's mean probaby didn't make an effort to actually talk to him. Make sure you do your work though, Merbouh can totally tell if you haven't!
Excellent professor for two main reasons. First, he knows how to teach, and how to teach well. This is shown in how he emphasizes key components, the amount of extra tutorials he holds, and the need for his class to pay attention. Second, he doesn't baby you. He's tough; University requires hard work if you want to move on bigger and better.
He's good. He makes ochem quite eeasu for someone who lacks chem background. Just keep up with his tutorial questions and extra problems. Then should do well on exams. He's very fair. I did much better in ochem then 121/122.
Merbouh was an excellent prof - articulate, funny, held many much needed review sessions. His singular goal was to prepare us for CHEM 282. Exams were fair, and the lab was easy and interesting. Definitely take 281 with him.
Definitely the best prof I've ever had, super funny, really cool guy. Always available for help but not that nice if you come to his office hour asking stupid questions.
Egotistic but the best prof at SFU, this man speaks his mind and no f@#$s are given. Lab portion is an easy 25% which makes his lecture exams weigh less. If you honestly try, you'll walk out with ATLEAST a B. Get ready to be responsive in lecture and will call you out in front of the entire class( for using phone, talking, not taking notes etc)
Worst prof. Your better off to read the textbook. His notes are pieces from the textbook copy and pasted. He's rude and not a good prof He doesn't seem interested in teaching but just does it for the money. Pretty funny looking guy.
Amazing prof. In his own words, "really really straightforward." Lectures are not only informative but also entertaining. Midterms were fair but final was a bit unexpected. You realize one thing and one thing only. You only have to worry about the lecture slides he asks you to "put a heart around" then "life becomes really really easy."
One of the best profs I've ever had. He's very good at what he does but you have to make sure you pre-read because if you get picked on in class and don't know the answer, he won't forget it and won't let you either. As long as you try on your part, he's really willing to help out. He's really good looking too.
Easily the best prof I've had at SFU. Funny, engaging and has no problem going back over difficult material, but only if you speak up. Even if you get a question wrong in class he'll praise you for the effort (but probably mock you a little too) and explain in detail about where you went wrong. Try and take 281 with him.
BEST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD!!!
Very intimidating at first, but turned out to be a pretty nice. His notes are very clear, and literally tells you which parts will be on the exams. Lectures are enjoyable and easy to understand or will give extra examples if the class looks lost. Exams are fair, and straightforward. Review sessions are really helpful. Great prof!
Loved this course. It takes work but u ll enjoy it.
AMAZING PROF. VERY GOOD LOOKING. A+ 1010 WOULD RECOMMEND
He is responsible for his students, always in a good mood, very knowledgeable & one of the funniest profs I've ever had. He makes his students motivated and inspires them by his lectures .he has a lot of experience & expects you to do the work and will help you if you are confused. learnt a lot from him!don't miss ur chance of having him as a prof
He will scare the living daylights out of you but he's a great prof. If you show him you're working hard, he will work hard to make sure you get the best grade possible. He likes to yell at people, but don't take it personally. Honestly I'd rather have him yelling at me everyday than take this course with another prof. Also he's hilarious.
The best prof I've come across in at SFU and i was lucky to have him for this class. Dont be intimidated by him, just show hard work and effort and he help you succeed.
Nabyl has changed my perception of how I viewed my education. The best professor I have had in my entire educational journey. Truly cares about his students and goes the extra mile to make sure they are understanding the concepts. Highly inspirational and helps you realise your potential. May seem tough at first but a VERY good prof! Exams are fair
The most amazing Prof I've ever had, he really cares about his students, gives tons of practice questions, he explains the concepts thoroughly and his exams are very I've never had a prof put so much effort in for his students. If you get a chance to take the class with him, do it. This has been my highest mark, in Chem 121 and 122 I got a C+.
Organic chemistry is difficult, especially if it is your first time, but Dr. Merbough strives to make it approachable. But you still must put in work; you must do practice problems. If ever you are feeling lost visit hm and ask for some help, he is there and ready to help you understand. Practice and understand concepts; don't memorize answers.
awesome class great proof, explains everything so well
This course is hard just because of the volume of material. Merbouh gives you tons of practice problems and review sessions, and is super accessible outside of class. He is hilarious and keeps lectures engaging. You will have to study on your own and put in work, but her really cares about his students. Tests are VERY fair/easy if you put in time
Merbouh is a great professor. It's clear he has a strong understanding of the subject. He is great at explaining everything , but he is egotistic and wastes way too much class time telling stories, making jokes or picking on the students who ask for help. Tests are HARD. Midterm exam was difficult but fair, but the final was ridiculous.
Merbouh is a top tier example of what it means to be an outstanding professor. His lecture notes are highly organized, and his explanations are thorough. He keeps the class entertained charismatic humour and his ability to make memorable connections on topics discussed in class. Above all he's the very definition of tough love as respect is earned.
Hands down One of the BEST PROFS at SFU !! if you get a chance to take a course with him JUST DO IT! He is always available to answer any questions! He will find ways that work for you to understand the material! Be ready to stay on top of lectures and tutorial problem sets and then life becomes really really easy, nothing to write home about!
Took 281 with him and he was great... the tutorials really helped with the course and it was straight forward. However, 282 was very different and made the final exam way more difficult than necessary when it was worth 60% of our grade . Told us an easy 100% if you study which was very misleading. His humor is also rude more than anything .
He is a great hardworing guy and makes class fun, however his final was so much different than first miderm AND tutorials which was worth 60%... It was very difficult final specially for people who are not in chemistry.
Merbouh is a good prof, he's educated on the subject and tries his best to keep it interesting. The course itself is very unfair. The first midterm (40%) was fine but the final (worth 60%) was much more difficult than he said it was going to be. His slides don't fully reflect what he expects you to know and the final wasn't similar to tutorial Q's
Merbouh's the kind of prof you'd have a beer with-- after he wrecks your grades-- but with love. His midterm was VERY managable, but bring lube for the final because you will get... He genuinely cares about his students, but as a hard working prof, he expects quite a bit. Definitely not a class you want to slack in so buckle up if you're taking it!
Nabyl was an awesome prof, he put a lot of effort into teaching and actually cares about his students learning. Very big personality and being in his class was a lot of fun. Only 2 assessments for this course and the final (60%) was pretty hard. Content of his lecture and slides are all taken from the textbook, use the text to supplement his slides
Great OChem Prof! His lectures are something to look forward to. The material is hard, so prepare to work. Pay close attention to in-class examples and do your tutorial problem sets, all this work will pay off on the exams. He's a tough grader, but scales the marks in the end.
Dr. Merbouh is a good prof, but is also a pretty strict guy! DO NOT BE ON UR PHONE OR HE WILL CALL U OUT AND BE MAD! He explains concepts fairly well, but is pretty fast. Go to his office hr when not too many ppl, cause he will openly help out. Just make sure you go prepared knowing some basics to your questions before going for help. Practice lots
love this guy, actually teaches and gets you to understand the material needed. nothing extra. he is very into chem and would be more than happy to help you understand. grade is fully dependent on 2 midterms worth 40% and 60% so work hard and practice a lot for them !!! text book will also help if you are willing to read
Nabyl is an outstanding prof! I really enjoy being in his lectures, as he makes organic chemistry less painful. He really cares about his students and how they understand the materials. I would rate Dr. Merbouh 12 out 10 if I could. (Also shoutout to Ali (one of the ochem TAs), he really made me understand the hardest concepts very easily)
Hands down the best prof I have ever had. I hope to take classes with him in the future and I will even if I do not require the class. He cares a lot about your learning. I highly recommend getting to know him as he likes to befriend his students. He believes in hard work and has been a great inspiration this semester.
A real gem! His passion makes anyone fall in love with Organic Chemistry. He provides real life examples for all the concepts he teaches. He is really caring and selfless. He sacrifices from his own time to hold multiple review sessions and office hours to ensure everyone do good in his class. His exams are fair with no tricky questions.
Nabyl is a great prof! He does his best to make sure his students understand the material and will hold many review lectures for our benefit. Final was similar to the practice questions he put up & there were no trick questions. He is also really funny and made lectures very enjoyable. He does supplemental in class notes to his slides so go
Nabyl was awesome! My favourite thing about him is that he is encourages the students to learn. He can pick on you for being on your phone but he really just wants you to listen and do well! Very understanding and absolutely hilarious!
Nabyl is a great prof he is really funny and engaging in his lectures. He makes great connections to real life and is thorough in his explanations. Also, he really emphasizes what to spend time on and what you can skip over. Overall the course itself is kinda difficult but he does a great job of making it more understandable.
Dr. Merbouh has a lot of knowledge about organic chemistry. His lectures are very interactive and fast-paced, so be ready to answer lots of questions. Although this quality may be beneficial for some people, others look at it as a source of his demeanour. His expectancy of your knowledge during class can make the lectures unnecessarily stressful.
Honestly if you like a prof who yells at you, doesnt answer questions properly without making you feel dumb or embarrassed and like learning off powers point slides then, Dr. Nabyl is the prof for you. I took this class looking at his rating and its honestly my worst mistake ever!! After his class I hated chem, my major and wanted to switch out.
Worst prof ever! Nabyl was the kind of prof that made you feel dumb, his lectures were super fast pace and he expected you to know everything. His exams were hard and he doesn't believe in part marks, you either get it right or wrong. So good luck if you choose to take a class with him.
The TAs he chooses are extremely helpful. The midterm and final are similar to the tutorial questions and the practice exams he provides so make sure you work on those. Make sure you don't fall behind though because he goes slightly fast in lecture so you should know what you're doing. Lecture slides and in class notes are very helpful.
I don't get how this prof has a 4.3 . He should be a -4.3. He is the worst prof you can have in any university. All he does is yell at you and is also not a great person to ask for help for. DONT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM. DO NOT DO IT YOU WILL REGRET IT
He is very unhelpful and rude. While some might call this funny, it definitely is not when he gives you weird answers and makes you feel dumb for not knowing something. His tests are very pathetic and so are the averages. I had to put majority of my time into it despite being good at o-chem. I would avoid him and take it with Prof. Britton instead.
Dr. Merbouh is one of the best chemistry professors I have ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and clarifies any confusion occurred during lectures. He is accessible during office hours. 100% would recommend him, especially for Ochem 2 which is a mechanism heavy course. So pleased that I could take a class with him.
Professor Merbouh really shows that he cares about his students and conducts review sessions before midterms and finals. He makes organic chemistry fun and his lectures are super engaging and interactive. I recommend him to all my friends because he's really good at explaining mechanisms and elaborates on what he expects us to know for exams.
I'd honestly select more than one tag if it was possible. He's an amazing prof that's ready to help you anytime, anywhere, and he's also very dedicated. Yes, he roasts people, but that's his humurous side. He goes out of his way to answer your questions (after roasting you, of course) and is very knowledgeable in chemistry. He's an absolute gem.
Dr. Merbouh is a truly amazing lecturer but be prepared for call and response lectures and getting comfortable with shouting out answers and asking questions. Go to his office hours- he will take the time to help you understand. His teaching style is awesome but stay on top of tutorials and lecture notes! Wouldn't take OChem with anyone else.
Professor Merbouh is a great lecturer, he is very dedicated to helping his students learn and stops at nothing to make sure his class is succeeding. Also extremely understanding in the transition to online classes, and worked very hard to make sure we had resources available to guide is in our studying.
Merbouh genuinely cares about his students' success. He even gave us a pep talk to keep trying even if we don't think we can do it. His exams may be difficult but very straight forward and fair. This course requires students to put in their end of the effort. If you do all the tutorial and the practice problems he gives out then you're set.
Nabyl is a hardworking, amazing, hilarious prof. His lectures are easy to read and follow. Attend class and DO THE TUTURIALS and all extra questions and reviews he provides. Do not waste time on textbook. Focus on understanding his lectures. He will embarrass you in front of everyone, but it comes from a good place and it is to help you learn.
Nabyl is one of those rare professors who actually cares about his students' success. He will make you feel dumb if you ask dumb questions, but he will always clarify any confusion you have. He wants you to succeed, and he actually puts effort into his lectures. His tests were pretty fair, but make sure you keep up with the work: it's still ochem.
Nabyl is one of my favourite professors. He may come off as tough in the lectures, but in office hours he is so patient and very helpful. Student understanding is clearly a top priority for him, and he has been amazing through the transfer to online learning. His exams are fair, there are no surprises. Great prof.
Professor Nabyl was one of the best chem professors I have ever had. The class itself is difficult, but that is mainly because of the material and not the teaching style. As long as you do the practice that the TAs and Nabyl assigns you, you should be sure to do well. Try to participate in class, and if you get a chance, go and see him for help
Dr. Merbouh is an amazing professor. I never zone out during his lectures. He is very passionate about organic chemistry and motivates students to work hard. I enjoy that he talks about applications of organic compounds in different subject areas (biochemistry, health science, etc.). Tutorial problems + office hours SUCCESS!
Dr. Merbouh is an amazing, dedicated prof. He goes out of his way to drill in what you need to know in order to be successful. Chem 282 is not an easy class - its a lot of work, and it takes a lot of time and practice. But the amount of problems he does in class together, tutorial Qs and exam reviews, will prepare you thoroughly for his exams.
He writes out some mechanisms by hand during lecture which is kind of helpful. Apart from that, he likes to ridicule students for asking questions and calls you out for not paying attention. While some might find it "caring", if you dont want an intense lecturer, merbouh is not for you.
Dr. Merbouh is a passionate prof & conveys that to students excellently through use of relevant examples. He truly cares about his students' academic progress &wellbeing, is very supportive &goes the extra mile to ensure for instance that a final exam review session is held in spite of a pandemic. So dont miss out on the chance to take his class
Nabyl's lectures are highly entertaining, he tries his best to make hard concepts as easy as possible. Overall, he's a great prof, he demands respect from his students and expects you to put in the work. Put in the work, don't fall behind, and you'll do fine.
Dr. Merbouh is passionate about the subject and making sure his students understand the material. He enjoys joking around during lecture but his teaching style is sometimes hard to follow as he switches between powerpoint slides and handwritten notes often. Do not fall behind! It's best to review the problems he shows during lecture and tutorial.
The best prof I've had EVER! Made it super amazing and fun! Hes a fun guy and has funny jokes!
Midterm was fair. Due to COVID-19, final was moved online and the reduced time allotted made it hard to complete -- material was still fair. Dr. Merbouh relates the course material to real-life scenarios which made this course more interesting. Definitely one of the better organic chem profs. Attend lectures and study hard - you'll be fine.
I don't know how he has a 4.3/5. If you take his class, online especially, you will understand the horror. His lectures are so brief, and his explanations are not the best. You almost have to read every single chapter of the textbook if you want to somewhat succeed in this class. Although this might be just one class, the workload is similar to two
The midterm had 50% average. He says he wants you succeed, I don't see it. His lectures teach something else, but on exams he expects something else. He would ask you to "explain" something on an exam, but he really expects a fully drawn out mechanism, if you just write in english without a drawing to back up your point, you lost like 50%.
I normally don't complain about profs but I'll never understand how this man has such a high rating. He's very rude when you email him and basically belittles you. His midterm was worded terribly and if u tell him that he blames you instead. If you care about your mental health I don't recommend this prof. He's super inconsiderate about everything.
He explains well during the lectures, but that is perhaps the only good thing about him. Unfortunately, it does not cover all the stress and frustration that comes with that. Incredibly inconsiderate and moody. All tech problems are fake. Gets mad at student for not understanding. Avoid taking this class with him at all costs, especially online.
Never can take responsibility for his mistakes and is always ready to blame students for everything. Very hard marker and does not make his expectations clear what so ever.
Professor Merbouh is a great lecturer and an organized professor, however I completely lost respect for him. He was not accomodating at all too people who failed to submit stuff due to technical difficulties and claimed we could have been taking extra time to cheat, tends to belittle students in class, and marks were shaved off of exams. Unfair.
I have had the worst experience of my undergrad with him and his TAs. They are always ready to punish and blame students. His emails were straight up rude and he will dishearten you anytime you ask him a question by making you feel stupid. He has been the least accommodating professor and I would urge you all to avoid him and save yourself time.
His lectures are very clear and he goes over many examples in both his recorded lectures and his BB collaborate sessions. The midterm Was tough and he expected a lot of detail but very doable if you attend the BB collaborate sessions.
Amazing explanation of the material. Put a lot of effort into doing extra class times when moved online, aside from that was NOT accomodating moving online for most people, though I had no issues. Harsh in class, don't take him too seriously. Tough marking. Go beyond in explanations--use diagrams. Don't mess up arrows/brackets. Specifics MATTER
I would not suggest him. He is never happy to answer questions. What makes everything even more worse is his NON-ACCOMODATING attitude. He will mock you if you ask a question that is "stupid" according to him. Classes are very disorganized (some office hours recordings were not posted because he got mad about people emailing him more than needed)
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He is the most non-accommodating person I have ever met. He is a very tough grader and his tests are complicated. If you have any issues he is not a person who will help you solve them and provide any sort of emotional support that every prof should. He is rude, sassy, douchy, complains a lot about doing his job. AWFULL!!!
RUDE, if u ask questions he makes u feel stupid no accommodations for tech. issues weekly lectures prerecorded in 1-3 hr vids, instead of lectures had bb collab. office hours, doubling lecture time fine ochem teacher but bad attitude if u have mental health issues steer clear, made me feel horrible without ever even talking to him
His classes were a nightmare for me. The lectures were very dry and long. He did not hold any review session that left people with no option other than holding a student review session. I have never seen a person as fussy as him.
never had such a prof as rude and heartlesss as him. do not take any class w him unless its just the lab portion
Horrible experience with him. Uneccessarily long lecture hours. He is not accomodating for any issues (i.e. technical), had no trust in the students because a few were caught cheating on labs, horrible attitude during lecture, always made us feel guilty and never answered questions in a straight forward manner. If I could give 0/5 I would.
The worst mistake you could do is take a class with him. He recorded 3 hours of lecture straight (which made learning almost impossible) and would make fun of people during office hours for asking their doubts. The final exam was a disaster.
His Organic Laboratory techniques are flawless. Watch closely and take note of this technique, he is a master. Didn't like the way he treated us students. I was too scared to ask questions since he loves calling people out and making us look stupid. We need support to do well, I hope one day he can understand that.
Absolutely hated the way he treated the students. In the middle of a pandemic, all this man did was belittle students for asking doubts. How is the passion for a subject going to help when all you want do is be rude and grumpy in the class. By the end of semester, majority of people stopped asking questions because of the way he answered doubts.
When I was taking this class with him it was a huge mess, as the notes were all over the place and when the class shifted to remote learning it was even worse. Overall, I would suggest watching youtube videos to better understand the content.
This class and him- A NIGHTMARE! He was the most grumpy prof I have had during my time at SFU. The knowledge about the course content does not help when you are always rude when answering questions and being the most non-accommodating person ever. I hated the way he shuts people down by looking down on them when they ask questions.
After he tested students on material we were not taught, majority of class failed and his attitude towards students flipped. He was rude and made fun of students for asking questions. I learned a lot from him but I know I deserved a better grade.
Bro thinks he's a standup comedian and wastes half the class time trying to humor us rather than teach us. We barely finished learning the midterm material (wednesday for a 40% midterm on friday) because of how poorly he manages his time. I wouldnt even be this upset if the jokes were actually funny but I cant help visibly roll my eyes during class
Dr. Merbouh can really teach. Lectures are engaging and he gets to the point. He constantly made sure the class was following and would go over things even if we shouldve already known them. Gets upset if class doesnt participate but you can tell its cuz he cares. Exams are difficult but FAIR. He is a scary guy but also has a good sense of humour.
The professor is all funny and enjoyable until you see the exam. We all wasted our time studying for nothing to be crushed by a difficult exam that de motivates us. He explains really well but ruins it by showing us the hard exams thats nothing like the tut, lectures, or even the review sessions he make.
Nabyl really knows how to teach organic chemistry. Looking purely from a teaching perspective, he is one of the best profs at SFU. However he can be very intense. Some might see it as caring and some might not. If you get frightened easily then don't take this class with him
Whoever is rating four out of four youre a TA in disguise, Yeah this guy is super smart but he's also been teaching this for 30+ years. Be ready to hundred percent learn this class on your own. He was exciting and fun the first bit of the semester but then his mood just went down. Not approachable at all especially after he lost it on the class
Very engaging professor who actually cares about his students individually as well, however lecture attendance is mandatory in order to understand his slides and take notes. Participation is not mandatory but he loves it lol
Dr.Merbouh is a great prof for ochem. Teaches material in a clear way AND goes into real-life applications - which makes lectures useful and fun/funny. He really likes it when the class participates and he teaches best in an active class. Ochem isn't easy by any means so the more you practice the better you do.
Absolutely brutal exams where he doesn't even give out part marks and then shames the class for not doing well. Gotta retake this class now.
Be ready to rely on self-study and organic chem tutor on youtube
I would like to take my time here to thank the organic chem tutor for helping me pass this course because goddamn wtf.
Many of the other reviews from the spring 2023 semester are true, but he isn't as bad as everyone thinks. Be prepared to work very hard to get at least a grade lower than what you were planning for. Exam marks will have to be earned from very precise answers (no bs-ing). Despite all the negatives, he is one of the best lecturers at SFU by far.
This professor is awful. Although he was fine in the first half , and his midterm was fair midway. After the midterm he completely switched. He was extremely rude and would make fun of students for asking questions. He blamed the students for the 30% average on the final exam rather than the difficulty of the exam.
Decent lecturer, he was funny - got to give him that. However, wish I dropped this course to save myself from retaking it again this sem. The tests are very difficult (30% final av. & ~40% midterm av.) and he gives out no practice finals - tells you to practice tutorials or review lecs. Course wouldn't be this insanely hard if the exams were fair.
potential to be a great prof. smart, teaches the material well. Unfortunately his attitude is exceptionally poor. If you are an athlete he will baby you. if not, he will be rude and not really give any breaks (even if you study well). He started our semester saying how he got a break to get into a masters... weird how he does the opposite for us.
He has a terrible attitude. De-motivated his students and thinks highly of himself. He is the worst professor that I have come across at SFU. I have no idea who thought he should teach because he does it so so poorly. Passed by studying from youtube because his classes were of 0 help.
Do not ever take 286 with Merbouh. He is completely radio-silent on relaying important information such as what content to study for on exams, and an overall harsh and rude person. Some concepts in the lab reports are impossible to answer unless you know them beforehand. You will struggle in his class if you dislike his teaching style.
This instructor cares about our safety and learning. However, he is very honest, strict, and deducts a massive chunk of technique marks if things go wrong depending on the situation.
saw this guy rip a girls lab because she made a VERY small mistake on her lab report (to which she ask the TA prior and the TA told her she understood the mistake and looked past it since they mark it) and yelled at the whole class that “we are not in grade 5”. I can understand a strict prof, but that was extremely unprofessional of him to do
I think it says a lot that I've met alumni and other students across my time at SFU (spanning like 10 years) and we all collectively trauma bonded over this prof. He's SFU's Madame Pomfrey. His diabolical nature forces you to disassociate and just laugh at the insanity of the situation to survive. Take his class if you're masochistic.
Merbouh's over-inflated rating is due to the students who thrive on academic validation and lack self-respect. This prof appeals to a certain demographic of already smart students who walk into his class having already learned everything there is to know about O Chem. He will validate the know-it-alls and it makes everyone else feel even worse.
Taught my Chem281 lab. Provides fantastic pre-lab videos that explain the whole lab. Labs are easy, as long as you can follow instructions. As long as you prepare, pay attention, and use common sense in the lab, you'll do fine. He doesn't spend forever talking before each lab too, which is a major plus.
Awful teacher who does not deserve any respect. Has anger issues within the lab and cannot contain his ego, causing him to lash out to a unnecessary extent on students as early as second year. Further, his manner of tone made it very difficult to understand his messages, as he spoke very facile. Avoid if possible but course is still passable.
Took Chem 281 with him. I 100% knew my stuff but I got c+ so I retook it next semester and got an A+. His exams and grading was just insane. Take it with someone else.
