Not an easy A, but she's very helpful if you go in to see her. Assigns a lot of extra credit, so take advantage of that if you can, because her tests are tricky.
Gal is amazing. Fell in love with calculus after taking her course. The tests are challenging but if you put in the effort, it pays off in the end. She has a sense of humor and is really passionate about what she does. Go to class and do the extra credit. Definitely recommend her as a professor!!
Good teacher, nice, but will go with the pace of the majority of the class. If everyone is good at calculus, you better be prepared. She finished the class 2 weeks early because she went so fast. Lots of extra credit which is your saving grace. You HAVE to show up prepared for class.
She is an excellent professor who is enthusiastic about what she teaches. Her tests are very fair, there are very little if any surprises. Calculus is an inherently difficult subject. However, she is always willing to help students, you just have to show initiative and ask for help. She is definitely one of the best math teachers I've had at UM.
One of the best math teachers I've ever had. The course itself is pretty difficult but she makes it fun and enjoyable. She assigns a lot of homework but it helps in the long run. Test are difficult if you don't know the material but if you have kept up with the work, it should be fairly easy. Gives a lot of extra credit (about a letter grade)
She is a really good professor however, you have to spend a lot of time going over the homework. The tests are based off of the homework, so if you can do the hard homework problems you should be fine for the exams. She gives a lot of extra credit so take advantage of it. Show up to class because it really helps.
Dr. Gal is amazing!!!! If you need to take Calculus 2, take Gal! Her tests are doable, not extremely hard. She showed me how much i loved math. Because of her, i am going to major or at least minor in math! Take her!
She reached at a fast paced and sometimes reached differently than the way I learned in high school. You def have to read the section before class and be prepared. Tests are doable. Just do practice problems, study, and do her extra credit (helps a lot). She is nice and down to earth, and knows how calculus well. I would take her again.
She assigns the hw from the textbook, which makes it much harder than webassign esp to get an A. But she does give a lot of extra credit, about half a letter grade. Class is not mandatory. Her tests are doable but you need to make sure that you understand the most difficult parts of the chapter as those questions will be in most of the exam.
Teaches at a really fast pace which is hard to keep up with if you've never taken Cal before. Test question are like the hard questions from the book. Homework is handwritten so its harder to get an A. Weekly online quizzes.
She teaches at a really fast pace and is pretty cold. She is from Bulgaria so the mix of moving really quickly and the accent makes the class pretty tough. She's not a bad person but were here to learn and get good grades so i would avoid it unless your really good at math and can teach yourself then take it because attendance is not mandatory.
I took this very same class with TWO other teachers and failed once, dropped another. This is the best math teacher at UM. Her class is not easy, but she knows the material very well and explains it simply. She gives practice problems, weekly quizzes (around 10 questions), and she encourages you to stop by her office. Definitely recommend.
Great professor. Very clear and fair. Is willing to help you with whatever and will go out of her way to make an appointment with you. there are no surprises on the test, if you do practice problems you will be fine. makes class interesting and not boring. take her!!!.. if you are going to put effort in.
Knows math very well, but she's the type of person to do half the problem in her head. Very willing to meet outside of class hours and help with whatever problems you are having. If your foundation is not strong in math, consider a different professor as her explanations are on the sparse side. Loves proofs
Dr. Gal is one of the most patient professors at UM. Great sense of humor and wonderful disposition. Very smart and can sometimes move a little fast but she is willing to break the processes down so everyone understands. She is very accommodating and is willing to meet with students as often as necessary for them to understand the material.
She was a great person and a nice teacher but her tests were somewhat unfair. She doesn't base her tests off of what was taught in class enough. There are usually a lot of tricky questions. Not simple at all! She knows what she's talking about but moves much too quickly.
Super patient and always available after class. Her tests are very fair and if you pay attention you'll be fine.
clear lecture
Though she is very kind, willing to help outside of class, and wants you to succeed, I don't think I can recommend her for students that have not taken Calculus or are not math geniuses. I felt her tests were not as fair as they could be, and one or two bad grades on tests will ruin your grade since there isn't many chances for extra credit.
super nice professor, she explains things clearly and an easy a
Super nice lady. She gives you tons of help. And the exam is from the class. If you go to class, you surly should make an A
Dr. Gal is an awesome professor! She's always willing to answer questions and clarify anything. If you do the practice problems she gives for the test you should be fine. Tons of opportunities for extra credit. Tests are tough and she goes a little fast, but you will learn the material. TAKE HER!!!
Professor Gal is really a math professor for people who care about math. She is so passionate about it, but she won't just give you an A. If you want an A, know that you'll have to put in a considerable amount of work. If you're willing to do that, you can and will learn a lot from her.
Take her. Best Math prof!
A lot of the students in my class complain about Dr. Gal, but I have an A+ in the class with not an insane amount of work put in. I will say she may expect kids to know things they don't, but she'll explain everything regardless. She is very easy to get along with and her tests/quizzes are directly from the textbook, she really wants kids to pass.
Math has always been my strongest subject, got a 770 on the SAT. Fact is, professor Gal is very good teacher but when it comes to getting the grade you deserve do not expect it. I put extensive amount of work into the class. I would get 3/5 on problems which were 100% correct. Very difficult grader even if you completely understand the concept.
Dr. Gal is very intimidating and somewhat difficult to understand at first. But after going to office hours almost every week, she became by favorite professor at UM. Showing up to class is imperative, almost every test problem comes directly from an example we did in class. She is very intelligent and genuinely wants her students to succeed.
She is an amazing teacher! Loved her class. She is very sarcastic and tries to make her lectures interesting even for non-math majors. Theres a quiz and a homework assignment once a week, but half of the quiz is extra credit and a lot of the homework can be found in the book. Her tests come straight from the list of review questions.
She's one hell of a teacher. Saved my math career. You'll get homework, but it's nothing out of this world. She' witty and sarcastic, so except jokes throughout the lecture. The tests are fair, she grades for process rather than answer. Weekly quizzes at lab, is always available to help you. WOULD TAKE AGAIN, and will for MTH162. No hesitation.
She's a great teacher
Really good teacher, cares a LOT about you and really wants to make sure you will pass. Highly recommend taking, also the tests are WAYYYY easier than you would expect, class average on every test in Calc 1 is about a 85-90.
Difficult class, makes you work for your grade, but also forces you to really learn material.
She goes way too fast in the lectures, never curves, and expects you to memorize every proof and explanation to the most minute details. She has no mercy for students and is a very unfair grader. I have never worked so hard in my life for one class and I wouldn't recommend this teacher to anyone.
She speaks way too fast and her English isn't as good as you'd hope for a college professor
She goes extremely quickly during her lectures and it is easy to get lost. Go to her office hours because she is very helpful one on one
If you are a math person and want to learn something or you have Math for years, take her. Trust me you will feel great accomplishment.
Very good professor, grades reflect work and effort put into class. Attendance is not required although I highly recommend you attend as she covers the basis of most of her assignments in class. Do the necessary work and you will get a grade.
Is very clear and helpful in her explanations, and if you are a good student you should be well prepared for the next semesters of calculus. Would definitely take again! (Also very funny, be prepared for sarcasm.) Don't slack off!
Gal is one of the funniest and best professors I have ever had, however, she's not an easy one. Homework every week, quiz every week, and tests every few weeks. Calculus is tough but she is a great teacher and very reasonable too. If you go to all lectures and put in the work in and outside of class an A is definitely manageable.
Honestly she is a good Calc 1 Professor but do not take her for Calc 2 under any circumstance. Every other calc teacher gives you an equation cheat with all identities and proofs, whilst Dr. Gal expects you to memorize everything. The class is ridiculously difficult with tough homework and quizzes, you end up not having time for your other subjects
A great professor who will teach you everything you need to know for the tests so make sure you go to class. She is always available to help you. She is funny and very approachable. Her class is hard, but definitely worth it because you will learn so much.
Dr Gal is probably the toughest Calc 2 teacher out there. Never curves, expects you to memorize every single identity (other professors provide an equation sheet) and very challenging quizzes and exams. Do not recommend taking her if you want to pass, she makes Calc 2 ridiculously complicated and the extra credit points are impossible to get.
Gal is very organized with HW and structure (one 20 ish HW Qs per week). If you skip a class here or there, then you should be fine as long as you get notes but try not to skip too often. Her notes and test questions come from the book, so work on the practice problems before tests and quizzes. Study 2 days in advance and you should be fine.
I had her for Calc 1 and 2 for engineering. I highly recommend taking Dr. Gal. She is no-nonsense and is a tough grader, but she is the most straightforward, clear, and helpful professor I have had.
Among all the professors I've had in UM, she is the best, not one of, THE BEST. I love her sarcastic jokes. She is so clear in her lecture about everything, and she will ask u again and again if u understand it. Her office hrs are always very helpful and students just walk in and solve problems together. Wish she teaches Calc3. I got A+ for both
Dr. Gal is an amazing professor!!! She taught me soooo much about Calculus!! The negative reviews on here do not do her justice. She really cares that her students learn. If you have the chance to take her, please do so!!!
Dr. Gal is the best math professor I have ever had. I had her for both calc 1 and calc 2 and i only wish i could have her for every math thereafter. Attendance isn't mandatory but it helps a lot, however if you do miss she is beyond helpful in office hours. She is nice and funny but its important that you try because the subject matter is not easy.
If you take her class you should be really prepared, its a really hard class especially Calc 2
Overall great teacher. She's very good at explaining things and its easy to catch on. Her tests come straight from the lectures and we mostly do every problem on the test on the board in class. If it wasn't done in the lecture, the question is most likely in the textbook. If you really try in the class and study, you should pass with an A.
Gal will challenge you as a student, but you will know your math. She's amazing once you go to office hours as you get to see a different side of her. She's very helpful and the course load isn't too heavy. She cares about her students, but can come off as tough. Pay attention, take great notes, and make sure she knows your name and you'll love her
This lady is actually one of the worst professors ever. She talks to students like theyre 5 years old and she doesn't actually explain anything. She doesn't care about teaching she cares about being in charge of people and if you ever try to talk in her class she automatically assumes you're talking about her. She's the worst.
If you have any choice at all don't take her class. Even if you have to take an 8am it is worth not having her.
the worst experience of my life
This is absolutely the worst professor I have taken. So awful. Just know that no matter how much effort you put in, she probably won't care and you'll just end up desperately trying to teach yourself Calc 2 (which is impossible). Extremely unapproachable and makes you feel dumb for asking questions. This class is making me actually hate my life.
I would literally rather get curb stomped, slapped with a soccer cleat, and decimated by a 16 wheeler than take this class again. I want to punch myself every day for deciding not to take another professor. I cannot stress enough: DO NOT TAKE. If you have any fraction of a will to live, and you want to maintain that, take someone else.
the worst
This was the worst class I've ever had in my entire life. She literally made my life horrible the entire semester. It's so difficult to focus on any other classes when you're in this class because of how much work it is. It makes it hard to get good grades in any classes. This class took up all of my time.
Such an amazing professor! Really tries so hard to make sure her students are doing well and offers a ton of extra help outside class. Lectures are always clear and move at a good pace with opportunities to ask questions. She will call you out if you are talking/on your phone in class, so just don't. I wish she taught every math class!
Do NOT listen to any of the positive reviews on here. Unless you got a 5 on AP Calc AB/BC and are a complete suck up, you will want to kys as a result of this instructor. The only positive reviews on here are written by her kissass students who don't have any personality traits outside of liking math. So quirky of them. DON'T TAKE.
you'd think for being a mother of young kids she'd be a LITTLE more empathetic to her students. HAHA you would THINK. Nope! I genuinely cannot fathom how people as cold, mean, and condescending as this have jobs as educators. Just because ur a math genius doesn't automatically mean you should teach.
She is probably the worst person I've ever met. Her class is so ridiculously hard for no reason especially compared to other professors. If you breathe the wrong way in her class she'll fail you. There is a test like every day she doesn't teach anything and the averages are always like a 48.
If you want to learn math, take her! Had her for Calc I for Eng and Calc II, and received a B and a Pass due to online classes during Coronavirus. She worked harder than any other prof to make sure we learned and did well during the impromptu switch to online courses. Don't listen to negative reviews, she's tough, but just stay on top of it!
I took calculus in high school and i still had a hard time in the class. i had to study a lot on my own because she rushes through the curriculum. the tests are really hard and count a lot towards your grade. however she is there a lot for extra help during office hours.
Dr. Gal is super nice to the students that try hard and want to succeed in her class. That being said, THIS CLASS IS HARD. Lots of material is covered in a very small amount of time. It is very hard to keep up most of the time, but she loves kids who participate. If you show up to every class and do your homework, it is possible to get an A.
Dr. Gal understands math and explains topics with the math proofs/rules. She explains why we have to solve problems with certain details. She can talk about applications of topics beyond this course, which is very intriguing. Hard class and challenging material, but she wants you to understand. Super funny in class, best teacher I've had at UM.
Professor Gal is the most amazing Professor. She very much cares for her students and is always there to help you. She is very good at explaining the material and there are no surprises on exams. You definitely should still study hard for this class, and if you do you will get a good grade. I 100% recommend taking her class
Gal is an amazing professor. Although the class material is hard, she is extremely accessible and will stop at any time during lecture to go over anything that is unclear. Even pushed back tests a couple of days if we felt we weren't ready. The material is hard and outside practice is necessary to do well. She gives a study guide for extra credit
I took AP Calc AB in my junior year and was placed in Calc 2 my first semester. I was very nervous, but she's truly amazing and has her own sense of humor. Study for the quizzes from the textbook, do the homework, and ask questions, and you'll do great. She is very fast when she teaches, so do a preview of the lecture material before class.
I wish I could say that Dr. Gal was at least a nice person... sadly I cannot even say that. She clearly has a "holier than thou" attitude any time you have a question and approach her. I have never had a problem in any math course, yet Dr. Gal found a way to mess that up. If you want a FAIR teacher, DO NOT TAKE DR. GAL!!!
I didn't pass her Calc 1 first semester but that was mostly on me for not studying enough but absolutely love this professor. Amazing lectures and could actually hold attention. 2nd Favorite math class I've taken. Hard grader though so be careful lmao as I didn't pass.
She is one of the best professors I've ever had. Given the difficulty of the subject, she is able to teach it in a way that makes it much easier to understand. I took MTH 161 and 162 with her and can honestly say that I learned more in those two classes than any other classes I've taken at UM.
Her tests are 100% fair since the problems are no more difficult or complicated than homework problems. The flipped class is incredible but as I said before if you slack off or do not do the work for this class you won't get a good grade. Unlike other professors, you can get an A if you care about the class and work hard.
Professor Gal is by far the best math professor I have had at UM, and maybe the best professor overall. MTH161 is a difficult course no matter who the teacher is, as this is my second time taking this course. Her lectures are very engaging, and she clearly cares about her students. She has office hours available and she is such a good help.
I have always loved my math teachers, but she is the best one I have ever had. Her flipped section is phenomenal. Instead of memorizing, you are actually learning. She is also very flexible with due dates and quiz dates. Her grading criteria is also pretty easy too.
Professor Gal is an amazing professor and the only professor I actually liked during my first semester at UM. She is very clear during lectures and prepares you for exactly what is on the tests. She is always happy to help and never makes you feel like your question is stupid. So excited to take her again for MTH 162.
I absolutely loved Dr. Gal. She is very understanding if you talk to her about what's going on. She moved my homework deadlines multiple times because I was so busy. Extremely nice and goes on personal tangents in almost every class. She's good but a lot of studying outside of class is needed to get a good grade.
I loved her. She was so relatable and easy to talk to. Her lectures were extremely good and accurately reflected what was on the exam. She was so kind and helpful during office hours. The only thing I did not like was that the course was very homework heavy and honestly was so much harder than the exams/quizzes. I miss her as a professor. Take HER!
Professor Gal is a great math teacher, especially for calc I and II. She doesn't take attendance but I don't recommend skipping class. The course is a lot of work but she genuinely cares about students and is willing to meet outside of class. She is also flexible with deadlines and has moved exams when it benefitted the entire class.
Professor Gal is a very caring and wants her students to succeed. She has no say on the curriculum or how many tests/quizzes there are because the department chooses that. She is very easy to meet with and is super helpful during office hours. Would definitely take her if you have the chance. However she is strict about cellphones.
Professor Gal is the best math professor and cares about you succeeding. Although I accidentally enrolled in flipped learning, it ended up being fine. Beware of weekly quizzes but it will force you to stay on track w work.
Absolute favorite professor of all of freshman year, hands down. She makes expectations crystal clear, I have never been surprised on a test. She genuinely loves teaching, and it shows; super caring and always happy to answer any questions. She will hold you accountable, but if you do what she recommends and work hard doing well is very doable.
Dr. Gal was an amazing professor who is truly passionate about what she does. She is experienced and one of my favorite UM professor's so far. Calc is tough but if you put in the work and get help from Dr. Gal you won't be disappointed.
Prof Gal is a great teacher. She does do flipped learning, which can be challenging. However, she cares about her students and is passionate about what she is teaching. I dropped because it was too hard for me, but calc 2 is complex, so it is not on her. If you have to take Calc 2, she is a good choice, and I recommend her!
Dr. Gal is the best professor at this university. She is the type of teacher that wants to make sure all of her students understand what is going on and will work with you personally until you do. There are no surprises on exams, although, she is strict with how she wants the answers written but that is clearly expressed to you during class.
Professor Gal is AWESOME. There was more than one time where I couldn't be in class for a quiz or test, and she adjusted her schedule for me. She gives you individual feedback and encourages questions. Quizzes/exams aren't challenging. She is overall a wonderful and funny woman. If you pay attention in class you will do fine!! Take Professor Gal!
Professor Gal is by far my favorite professor I've ever had. During lectures, she clearly explains why she does each step. Additionally, her weekly quizzes are very straightforward, and as long as you listened in class and did some review you should get a great score. While she rarely takes attendance, I strongly recommend going to class.
She is pretty good. A bit rude though. Very fast paced class but that's just the class that's difficult. Sometimes she would rush through the material too fast, so make sure to read the supplemental materials. I liked that she would record videos explaining stuff.
definitely take her! She cares about her students success, and is a great teacher, and finding a professor that does both is rare. She will call you out for being on your phone. Weekly quizzes, except on exam weeks, but they help you prepare for the exams. If you put some effort, there should be no reason why you leave this course below a B.
Goes fast but is eager to answer questions. She does a great job of making it feel like the material matters.
She is the GOAT! Take her!!! Calc 1 is hard but thats just the nature of the class. If you are struggling, she will help you. Also funny AF
I thought I would like flipped learning, but it was the hardest and most time consuming class I've ever had. Homework every single night that has completely different problems compared to class. She taught like we already knew calc 2 and over half the class ended up withdrawing. Took Calc 2 with a different professor this semester and was great.
Very good professor but don't take her if you struggle with math, she gets annoyed if you don't understand. Exams are tough and would recommend requesting extra time at ODS.
Coming from someone who retook Calc 2 with her, she is an amazing prof. It is fast, and she is tough, but she truly cares about your success and learning. Her lectures are super clear, and I learned a lot. She helped me improve my fundamental math skills and independence. If you have to take Calc 2, take it with her - you won't regret it!
Dr. Gal is an amazing professor. Calc 2 is a difficult class with a lot of material, but Dr. Gal made lectures engaging and was always willing to further explain difficult concepts. The exams were fair and reflected what Dr. Gal taught in class. Keep on top of the homework and redo class problems, and you will do well. I highly recommend Dr. Gal!
This class is very very hard. She expects you to understand everything the minute you learn it. Flipped Learning has hours of homework every night. The class moves unbelievably fast with no time to actually grasp the concepts. She has weekly office hours and loves group work. I dropped it because it was too hard but others passed. A LOT OF WORK!!
Don't waste your time
Professor Gal is a tough but caring instructor. Her flipped learning style requires dedication, but pay attention in class and use resources like unstuck ai to succeed. Exams are challenging, but she wants you to learn.
Best math teacher I have had here so far. She cares about her students and she memorizes everyones names within the first couple weeks. Her class is hard but so is every calc 2 class. She does drop less quiz grades than other professors but her excuse is valid which is that it forces you to study each week. You will struggle but you will learn.
Retook Calc 1 with Professor Gal and she's super sweet and helpful, but this class was still brutal. She usually teaches Calc 2 so she kinda expects you to know the basics already. If you're struggling or new to Calc, take Koppendrayer, he really breaks stuff down and makes calc 1 easier.
by far the most time consuming class ive ever taken. i'm good at math and catch on quick, but this one had me TEACHING MYSELF. it turned out fine but it WASNT necessary. i wouldnt have taken her class if id known it was flipped learning. if youre ready to put in MANY hours per day and cancel plans to study, take this class. i love her tho so funny.
Will help you if you show you actually care. Keeps you on your toes (she'll bully you a little bit, but it's helpful). Good lecturer but sometimes gets too technical to the point it's confusing, but she'll reexplain a concept if you ask she's very patient. If you stay on track with assignments and lectures you'll be okay
She is actually really caring and tries to be friendly with us. She gives time right after the class if we have any questions.
I took the flipped modality for Calc II and you definitely get out of it what you put into it. Dr. Gal is incredible and she made Calc II feel like a breeze. She cares for each student like her own child and she wants success for all. I cannot recommend her enough. Easily one of the best teachers I have ever had
