Her lectures aren't thorough; she rushes through problems and can't explain the answers clearly. I usually spent days in office hours with GSI's to understand simple concepts. I failed the first exam and dropped the course. Unless you have a background in Stats, e.g. you took AP Stats in high school, I recommend taking it at a community college.
Nadiya was great for Math/Stats 425. Lectures are very clear! If you go to lecture and do the homework, you will do very well in the class. The tests are extremely similar to the homework problems. Do them! Attendance is mandatory so just go. Overall it was the smoothest and easiest math class I've taken at the University.
Very mediocre. Hard class, nothing was very specific.
An OK lecturer teaching an easy class.
Dr. Fink seems like she knows what she's talking about and I think she wanted us to do well, but she didn't really get that across in lectures. Exams are difficult, especially if you do not have a background in statistics. If you take this course, no matter the professor, make sure you review ALL concepts before exams. They will surprise you.
STATS250 is a piece of cake if you've taken basically any math or technical class on campus. Prof. Fink always helped me anytime I went to office hours, and did a great job moving through content at a good pace. Her accent wasn't a problem at all.
Nadiya has trouble explaining concepts that should be easy to explain. She is also unwilling to admit when she is wrong (or even worse, doesn't understand why she's wrong!). If you like learning, don't take MATH 425 with her. You will hate statistics and life afterwards. The worst part is that she doesn't post completed notes.
She was very nice, but the class is very memorization heavy. If you don't memorize the concluding sentences for each test prepare to lose a lot of points.
During my semester of stats 250, Dr. Fink moved much faster than Gunderson's class. I always felt like concepts were rushed and never fully understood. It got to the point where I went to Fink's lecture to get the clicker points but watched Gunderson's lectures later on. Take this course with Gunderson if you can.
Dr. Fink's lectures for Math/Stats 425 were perfectly fine--nothing extraordinary, but she did a good job explaining all of the concepts and doing examples. With that being said, I personally found the content of the course very uninteresting and tedious.
Take this class with her! She explains all concepts clearly and goes through every example problem step-by-step. She's also very helpful in office hours and is willing to help you through any problem. If you just go to class and pay attention you should be good.
Insane amount of homework. You gotta spend more than 8 hours on homework.
She gives long, meaningless homework with repetitive calculations, but not enlightening exercises. She also likes to post half of hw online and updated it 3 days later which makes careless students(like me) forget to update hw. Don't ask her deep concepts, she doesn't know either. Her exam questions are organized in a weird way too.
Her lecture is detail-oriented and well organized. And she is good at explaining concepts and computation step by step. I went to her office hours several times and it is really useful. Also I think the workload is okay since it's a 400 level course and there are too many things going on. You cannot learn anything without doing homework.
Professor Fink explains things extremely clearly and takes you through problems step-by-step. Easily one of the best I've had at Michigan.
Nadiya FInk is a horrible teacher. Her teaching structure is very unorganized and her lecture is all about computing the problems. NO explanation. NO study guides. Her first exam has an average about C- and she does not curve at all. Straight scaled. Worst teacher I've ever had in my life.
Of the professors for STATS250, Fink is by far the worst. It came to the point where I had to attend both her and Gunderson's online lectures to understand the material, and then I stopped going to lecture altogether because it was actually hurting my understanding. If you get stuck with her, attend a different lecturer and you'll do much better.
Take stats w/ Gunderson, or at a diff school altogether. Fink does what she can, but she teaches poorly and lacks the concept side of stats that is needed to survive the painfully hard exams. It's unbelievable how much of a waste of time, work, and money this class is, for a widely prereq math class that makes you writes papers and buy hw access.
Worst teacher ever. Obviously, she does NOT know how to teach/explain and she does NOT curve the grade given the fact that her exam was long and heavy. One advice on how to learn stats: DON'T take Nadiya's class.
NO curve. I almost cried. Her exams were sooo long and she took off most of points in an exam question because of only missing minor things. The homework is due weekly and each of them took me around 10 pages of writing. Some of her exam material does not match her homework. If I can give a negative rating for her, I would.
I almost got depression from this class. I did not do really well in the first exam, and I just see no hope in this class. Regardless of how hard and how people perform in this class. This class does not curve. Please if one day she can see those feedback, she would understand how her students feel about her grading.
Homework due every week with about 5-7 pages long, exam is the hardest and longest i have ever taken. The main point is no curve at all, even my class medium was a C. If you have another choice, don't pick her class.
Try to get Gunderson or do not take Stats 250. Stats with Fink I think actually screwed up my thinking on different concepts in stats and wish I hadn't gone to any of her lectures. Seems like a nice lady but I get a headache trying to constantly understand her.
The worst professor I've had in two years at Michigan. She does a bad job of explaining examples in class, homework takes 2-4 hours to complete weekly and the tests are impossible to finish in time, let alone being very hard. She doesn't curve either so almost half the class won't pass. I would never consider a course taught by Fink again. Ever.
Absolutely the worst teacher I've had in all of college. The class is difficult, uncurved, and is extremely work heavy even though it is only supposed to be a 3 credit class. Additionally, her notes are hard to read. A good chunk of my class has a C and below and she still refuses to curve. I would avoid taking classes with her at all costs.
To be honest, I've never seen such a horrible teacher before. Almost every one of my classmates was having a problem with the material she taught. She gave these hard, long exam which obviously was impossible to finish and she did not curve the grade. HORRIBLE!!!
This instructor is a good lecturer but gives ridiculous grade. Medium is C+ to B-, no curve at all. The most unfair issue is that other instructor(s) give much higher grades. Never take Stats 426 with her!!!
Stats 426 with Fink was the worst class that I have ever taken. She is a good lecturer, but she doesnt give adequate practice material, her exams are extremely difficult, and most importantly, her class is totally uncurved. Because of this, a good chunk of my class received in the C range and below. Avoid taking if you care about your GPA.
I wanted to give Dr. Fink a chance, but she honestly confused me so much. After doing just ok on the first exam, I stopped going to Fink's lectures and only went to Gunderson's. I scored four letter grades higher on exam 2. If you have Fink, I recommend watching lecture recordings or going to a different lecture. Also, use GSI office hours for HW.
Nadiya Fink does not even deserve a chance to teach students. Especially at such a great university. She does not know how to care and help students. NO curves. NO explanation. Almost one-third of my classmates received a C range result in some exams. She failed a lot of students in her class. Don't take her class if your GPA matters.
Fink is not a good professor - she is very hard to not only understand but pay attention too. She doesn't phrase things in the best ways and sometimes doesn't handles questions well. Taking it with her, will make you work much harder for your grade. Also the exams are ridiculously hard with a C average sometimes.
She explains everything clearly and gets through material very efficiently. She takes her time to go through a practice problem or two for every topic she teaches allowing students to be able to attempt homework problems on their own. She also holds regular office hours and is very helpful in answering any questions you have on the homework.
Nadiya Fink is the worst!!! Her tests were extremely long and a lot of my friends received B- or C range grade during the midterm. Her lectures were filled with her calculations which only she can understand. No explanation at all!!! Don't take her class if your GPA matters.
Nadiya is a great lecturer and so helpful during office hours; probably one of the nicest professors I have had. Her class is tough, I had to work really hard after taking a 3 year gap from 425 (I'm not a stats major), and her homeworks and tests are quite long. Definitely a really heavy workload but I enjoyed it and found the class rewarding.
Nadiya Fink is the worst. She gives out difficult and long exams and doesn't curve at all. The class median is roughly a B-/C+. Almost 1/3 of the class would fail. Don't take her class if you care about your GPA. She's gonna ruin your future.
For a relatively hard Theory-heavy, Calc-based Probability class, Dr Fink does a great job of taking you through all problems and showing the right way to go about a solution. The class itself expects a solid foundation on multivariable calculus, but the material for this class is covered clearly, with the assumption that you know your calc
It honestly breaks my heart to see those negative comments here. Nadiya is definitely one of the nicest instructors at U-M! She always explains concepts extremely well with inspirational sketches. Also, maybe it's because of my previous A+ in Math 217, her Stats 425 is one of THE EASIEST and smoothest classes I've ever taken - highly recommend her!
I thought that Fink was a solid professor and I enjoyed going to her section. She explained the course concepts and examples clearly (my own experience doesn't really align with all of these "confusing" "bad lecturer" comments -- she's absolutely fine, at least in stats 412)
I do not recommend to take her classes, ever. Escape her section at all cost, even if it means late withdraw.
Even though she does not curve, this class does not need a curve at all. An A is very doable.
The class isn't curved, which makes it hard when the exams end up with averages less than a B. Do not take this prof. She does not explain grading criteria clearly. We use the textbook, but then she has her own rules for how questions are to be done, docking almost all points off if not done her way when she doesn't explain how she wants things.
Made this class super easy to learn. Had a fun time learning statistics in this class. Tests were super easy and graded fairly.
From the bottom of my heart, do not take this course. No curves at all, class has a B- median. If you mess up once in one of the three tests, your A is gone. Has worse curves than EECS 203. From the 25 courses I have taken at umich, this one was definitely the worst, others are not even close.
Does not explain anything clearly. Uses the textbook but has her own set of rules for grading the test. This class is extremely hard to get a good grade without a curve, especially with no curve and crazy tests.
The rating of 2.3 just cannot explain how bad this lecturer is. Rather eat garbage than take this class again. At this point, it's not even a matter of gpa, this class is just pure nonsense.
Have her own set of rules for everything. Don't follow the book or anything online. Only listen to her and how she wants the hw/test to be graded if you want a good grade.
Sometimes, don't trust your eyes. The reviews don't really tell anything. Take this class and you'll know how good it is.
Listen to the reviews, I wish I did. One of the worst classes Ive taken at Michigan. She doesnt explain anything clearly and you basically have to teach yourself all the material. Exams are VERY hard to do well on bc of super specific grading and no curve whatsoever. Stats shouldve been an easy requirement and her class rly dropped my GPA.
Fink is a sha bi lecturer. Withdrawing from her section is the best decision I've made this semester.
It seems that FA21 was a rough semester for STATS 412- I took it WN21, and it was fine. The class itself was pretty easy during WN21, and I do think that the harsh ratings from WN21 are an anomaly. There's a clear language barrier considering her accent, but I do think she cares for students and has good intentions :)
Worst lecturer, worst grader. Poor content
Very good professor. I think she really cares about her students and tries very hard to make everyone to actually learn the material.
Dr. Fink is really a great professor. Lectures are helpful and clear on content, and she engages with students well. Definitely the best professor I've had a UM so far!
Fink is the goat. 10/10 would recommend to a friend. By far the best 412 prof.
Amazing lecturer, one of the best I've ever had. Clear and methodical teaching style and effortlessly facilitates class participation.
Fink is a very good professor and explains the concepts well.
There's nothing to say that hasn't been said - Nadiya Fink is an amazing teacher that cares oh so much about his students. You really couldn't ask for a better experience learning Stats.
One of the best Stats professor at Michigan. Very chill, down-to-earth, great lectures, and is very willing to answer questions. I attribute learning so much in Stats 412 to him, and looking back after taking 413, he prepped me well for 413 and statistics interviews.
Prof. Fink is one of the best stats teachers at UM. She is extremely organized and clear and you really learn the material just by following along. She is also very sweet and willing to answer questions that may arise and is rooting for your success. I did so well in her class even after only getting a B+ in calc 3. Cannot recommend more!
I don't get why Fink gets so many poor reviews, and I wouldn't be surprised if every poor review came from the same person. Fink is crystal clear in lectures, and the course content isn't too difficult as long as you study, but that's expected of any class. Homework requires you to think through problems, but that just makes the exams easier.
Fink has a good hand writing. I did not attend the lecture. I learn just by looking at the slides and the solutions to homework. The solutions provide a clear way to solve questions with formula highlighted in different colors. The exam is easier than homework, and it has 4 extra credits as well. I'm poor at math but this course is an easy A to me.
Theres nothing specifically bad about her, but I thought she was very bad at giving lectures, very uninteresting, very monotone and pretty hard to hear. The issue was exacerbated by the fact that we deviated from the textbook a lot, and so there weren't a lot of other ways to learn the content besides the lectures.
Her notes were very clear and easy to follow. Clear connection between the lecture notes and homework and exams.
Explains content way too quickly and unclearly. Provides little to no practice and support for exams. Exams are graded super harshly and aren't curved at all. Totally disappointed with how this class is being taught and now I'm having to reteach myself everything because I've forgotten/mislearned all the content from lecture.
This is the first time I have ever rated any professor, but she is horrible. You need to go or watch each lecture as the only notes given out are incomplete. Does not provide nearly as much practice as necessary and explains nothing.
She is terrible. Monotone, uncaring, and she makes the class harder than it needs to be. If you can, avoid taking her classes. She seems like a nice person but that niceness does not translate into her courses. She makes the notes hard to take, the lectures are too fast, and she does not even ask for feedback. Disappointed.
Honestly HWs aren't that bad though they take long. Tests are quite difficult though and not curved. They are also quite harshly graded so do not take this class for an ez A. Previously students were given pages for exam notes and now we are given one side of one small notecard so it is far more difficult. Strongly discourage taking her for 412.
Do not take Fink's stats 425 if you're not super interested in math. Her section is absolutely the hardest 425 section. Fink grades her exams very harshly. Also, you're only allowed a notecard as cheat sheet, so basically you have to memorize everything. Homework is due every week and super long.
She is probably the worst professor at this school. I hope no one has to suffer through one of her awful classes. Avoid her if you want to actually learn something in class.
Nadiya is a good person but her course style is BAD. Nadiya is very flexible and accommodating (emailing out reminders, having office hours, etc.); however, content questions were basically ignored by staff after class, the exam answers contradicted class notes, and most questions/concerns about grades were never answered. Recommendation: AVOID
The instructional team left good Piazza questions unanswered for weeks, deliberately made information difficult to access, wrote a majority MAMC final w/o giving any representative practice material, and are ghosting regrades and all questions about exam statistics/curve/exam contradictions with the course notes despite posting final grades.
I really should have listened to what was said here before signing up for this class. Unfortunately there aren't too many other professors offering the course. Lectures are long and drawn out. Exam prep and review isn't very representative of what is on the exam. The class fundamentally isn't that hard, so you'll survive, but she won't make it easy
Students are not well prepared for exams and the exams do not do a good job of reflecting the material taught. Lecture notes are only provided in an incomplete format to incentivize lecture attendance, but a final version is never uploaded, meaning the instructor is purposely withholding important material, which is truly bizarre and unfair.
The class overall seems to have differing standards each year, as the "cheat sheets" have gone from one page front and back to one side of an index card this semester. The exams are tricky and do not fairy test on things we have practiced, seemingly focusing on specific aspects that could be easy to brush over.
I am a straight A student and this was the only B I've received due to the final exam being extremely differnet from previous exam review materials and homework. I actually liked the content and felt that I learned a bit, but the final exam was truly unfair and I don't think my grade is refelctive of the effort I put into the class.
The other section got a formula sheet, and had access to recordings. Our section got one side of a 3x5 index card, mandatory lecture attendance with no recordings, and the exam got moved up two days "due to weather." Do. Not. Take.
I did my biggest mistake in this school when I was looking up Professor Fink and I thought people were exaggerating. Don't get me wrong, she is a great lecturer and takes her job very seriously. In fact, TOO seriously. She starts and end lectures late, covers a lot more content than other professors, and makes this course unnecessarily hard. Avoid.
Exams reviews do NOT prepare you for the exams at all and are extremely hard as well, given the amount of explanation about the content during lecture. I also see 7 positive reviews rated 5/5 from the past, which were written on the SAME DAY, with a very SIMILAR style of writing, so I'm pretty sure you would understand what that means.
Fink is an okay lecturer (monotone and not very engaging). Exams were hard, and I had a grading issue at the end of the semester which I had to wait several weeks to get help with (after emailing her).
Almost every class has pop up quiz and workload is huge. Only incomplete notes are published on to Canvas and need to complete them in class by yourself. NO lecture recordings. Weekly quiz is hard. A torturous class.
Materials are easy and the lecture is boring. Lots of weekly homework and no review session for exams(still teaching new stuff the day of the exam). Exams are super long with a bunch of calculations. The whole staff team barely answered piazza questions. At least 2 pop-up quizzes per class forcing you to attend the lecture.
The workload is larger than MATH 217. Very tough grader. Please do not take her class. YOU will regret!!
She's just the worst. Enforces class attendance with pop quizzes and doesn't release recordings of lectures or even annotated slides so if you miss a lecture, you're just screwed. Makes exams unnecessarily difficult by making them apply to real life situations despite never doing that format in class, homework, or quizzes. Never, ever again.
Workload is unnecessarily heavy compared to the importance of the class. Weekly homework and quizzes, even on the week of the midterm. Staff doesn't care about answering Piazza questions at all. Enforces attendance through multiple pop quizzes throughout class, yet doesn't release lecture recordings. This professor's pettiness is unmatched.
Nothing that hasn't been said - disproportionate workload, time-crunched exams, she *does* record lectures, but only makes them available to people with a verified absence (no slides, ever). Set a pop quiz to expire in less than a minute and said "oh well." Do not take under any circumstances, avoid the class itself if possible.
Professor Fink is a great lecturer and uses good examples in class. However she covers a lot more than other sections and at a faster rate. She is a tough grader and her exams are structured such that you can easily lose points even if you get the right answer.
75% of your grade is exams, and they are very long with a short time period to complete them. Also, very high workload for 3 credit class, and at least two pop quizzes every class.
Originally, I thought everyone on here was exaggerating until I took her course. Exams are worth 75% of final grade and they are not curved. Exam times are 80 minutes for a full length exam that should take 2 hours. Do not take the grade distribution on Atlas seriously.
8 hours of homework per week, plus a quiz, and 2 pop quizzes per lecture. Impossible grader. No curve. Sent an email to all the students not doing well recommending they withdraw- luckily for my ego I had already sent in my withdraw request. W is for winners.
Stats 412 with Nadiya has very poor communication (piazza avg response time was 5+ hrs). The class material itself is not inherently difficult. The slides as the year goes on also get progressively worse in which you have no room to write your own notes. Having a zoom option was very nice. This class is also very exam heavy (study hard for exam 1)
Freaked out at the beginning of the semester over all the comments I saw here. But I actually was able to understand materials covered in lectures (which rarely happens). Tbh exams were really tough and did require LOTS of prep, but manageable. She didn't check piazza regularly so be sure to utilize office hours for questions (she was very helpful)
I took Stats 412 this semester. There are 3 exams that make up 75% of the grade. There is no curve, but she makes your best exam worth a little more. This is probably 1-3% boost, so you need to average 90% on exams to get an A. I would estimate class average to be B-. I was able to get an A, but it was quite difficult. You need to master the hw.
The class content is fine and sometimes interesting but the professor is rude and intentionally ignores questions asked on piazza.
She obsessed over attendance, she checked it with multiple "Pop-up quizzes" per class. She always compared the sections she taught, and consistently reminded us how far behind ours was (we "asked to many questions"). Lectures were extremely boring, and she failed to give accurate instructions or steps for basic concepts and was a very tough grader.
Stats 412 with dr. Fink is very difficult. 75% of your final grade comes from 3 rather difficult exams so it is imperative that you master the homework. However, as a byproduct of this, it follows that you learn the subject matter very well. Outside of the exams the course logistics are below average.
Honestly all the bad reviews are just people getting mad for lack of preparation. Nadiya is a tough but fair professor, she takes the class and teaching in general very seriously, but thats not a bad thing. Exams were extremely fair imo, there are direct correlations from every question to a hw question/lecture example.
Professor's really amazing at the things she teaches, however, the exam questions are okayish in difficulty but the sheer amount of Ques we get in test is insurmountable and impossible to do. She will teach amazingly well but will expect you to study her course only 24x7. Personal take, go with someone better, don't risk your GPA. Exams r hard.
Fink is good at explaining concepts. She also offers and teaches a lot of examples in her lectures. All the problems in HWs and exams are pretty similar to what she taught in classes. The problem is that she just allows a small piece of note and limited time and does not give any curve even though our exam average was D+.
The homework load for this course is extremely heavy, and no formula sheets are allowed on exams. While the professor is nice, respectful, and thorough in covering the material, the workload is intense for an introductory probability course.
Though the class is straightforward, Prof Fink makes it incredibly dull. Slow lectures that feel rushed with almost no time for questions. There is little motivation to understand the field deeply because it feels like we're studying for the sake of completing the course content. We were also assigned HW over Fall & Thanksgiving break and exam week
She is bad at explaining statistics, I wanted to do data science but that out the windows, I hate statistics now. She is boring and deviates from the book a lot. You will have homework due the day before thanksgiving and homework due the tuesday you get back from thanksgiving break (2 days to do it).
She is tough but fair. She fills in "skeleton notes" for the class which makes it easy to understand where you are and where you are going. Homework is tough and has a lot of proofs. Exams are very challenging but I believe some of the harder questions are graded based on you having the right idea even if you cannot solve. Good class, good teacher.
She's a great professor, explains step-by-step, every concept has an example. HW lines up directly with lecture, par for an intro course. The hardest part are her exams which are very thorough, you won't finish if you're unprepared. Luckily the HW and review is very similar. If you're good at standardized tests/time management then you will thrive.
Overall, professor Fink was a fine lecturer. However, the way she wrote homeworks and tests made the class tedious. The homeworks were way too long despite being 15% of the grade. She also didn't allow us to use basic problem solving methods learned in math 215, a prerequisite, instead making us solve them her way, which also took way too long.
Don't take her class if your GPA matters. teaches more materials than other MATH 425 professor. The grade is not curved. The HW is heavyyyy. Don't want to take it anymore:(
GET THIS THROUGH YOUR HEAD. I would genuinely rather take a full power shot to the crotch from a heavyweight UFC fighter than ever see, let alone speak with this woman again in my life. A large portion of the second exam had content that WAS NOT COVERED IN THE PREP. The homework's have a ridiculous amount of unnecessary/irrelevant work as well.
Take any OTHER class or prof to fill this requirement I beg you. 75% total exam grade and she will state "second exam grades are always bad" there I no curve, and she knows the exams are too much, the are long and tedious. Will mention putting formulas and work for partial credit on exams but is hardly awarded. will mark points off for any mistake.
She was not a bad teacher for 412, explaining things somewhat slowly but fairly clearly as well. The pop-up quizzes were extra credit, and the exams were not too difficult if you study the homework and practice exams! There is also a live synchronous zoom which alleviates the slower lecture issue.
Does not teach well, makes simple mistakes sometimes, and overcomplicates solutions for no reason, very unclear should not be a teacher
She has a thick accent which is fine, but she speaks so quietly and muffled that it is impossible to follow her. Lectures are very boring. Answers questions about material covered in lecture by saying "just go watch the lecture" instead of answering
She's very particular about the way she wants everything and gives little wiggle room. She is rude and difficult to communicate with. I liked statistics going into this class, but not coming out. Thank God I passed and don't have to see her again.
I don't know why she gets so much hate. If you are a math major reading this like I am, this class is 10x easier than most other math classes at UMich. The tests are EXACTLY like the homework, almost exactly the same questions. So study those and you will be golden. If math does not come somewhat easily to you, she may not be the best teacher.
heavy exam no curve no matter the difficulty of the exam, heavy & unnecessary HWs. Take other class if you can!!!
This was my favorite class that I've taken at Umich so far and I'm a junior. THOSE WHO DON'T ENJOY THIS CLASS DON'T GO TO LECTURE AND DON'T DO THEIR HOMEWORK WELL. There is literally only one very doable homework set a week. The lecture lines up exactly with the homework AND the exam. Very reasonable and kind professor. Don't trust the low ratings.
definitely avoid it. Heavy HW, heavy exams, only allowed to bring small note card while other section allow to being A4 paper.
The exams make up the majority of the class grade and they're extremely difficult. If you aren't an extremely good test taker do not even bother taking the class with Nadiya Fink
This is one of the worst classes i've ever taken. Please do not take with her, its very difficult for little reason, unless from now until the grading deadline there are major changes, this section does not follow the atlas historical grading distribution whatsoever. The lectures are hard to understand and the professor doesn't post anything online
The lowest score I can give is 1 but I DO wanted to give a 0. It seems ridiculous to rate a professor from her unorganized and less-communication class mode. We've asked for tons of questions regarding grade curves and regrades while she chose to neglect all of us from piazza. Exams are harsh and HWs are heavy. Worst professor I've ever taken.
There are hundreds of reason not taking her class. She is a real tough grader on the exams that makes 85% of the grade. I went to every single (boring) lectures but learned little. She ignored our questions about curve and regrade policies. Taking her class will cause you mental damage and make you doubt yourself.
