needs a new word of the day calendar
She has a Ph.D. and you have nothing. Your answer is always wrong to her.
Don't be late- she'll lock you out!
knows her stuff, but makes everyone else feel incompetent.get2know her,can bnice

Gotta do something
Very intelligent. You must work hard to get a good grade, but this is the way c

SHe makes you feel that you are stupid and makes you feel belittled
In one word, T-T-Terrible. I think I am now dumber because of her.
Very hard to understand her english, way too difficult for a 100 level class
it's supposed 2 b history, but she makes it an english class
No Comments
She is a great professor and makes you earn your grade---whiners need not apply
lets just say i wouldnt suggest you take this class to breeze through
Stay away from this teacher, she is terrible!
stay away!
Work hard and you will do very well!
the WORST teacher at SVSU. yes, even worse than RENNA!!!!
Don't know what she wants because grading is too subjective. BAD teacher
I second the motion for worst prof.
RUN!!!

Not clear on what she wants and expects out of students. Horrible.
Okay, she seemed pretty nice from the start---but seriously, turn in a paper and you're doomed!! No way to tell what she REALLY wants or expects, and i don't think we can ever make her happy!!
tests were all 10 essays. Expected two pages on each of them. I didn't even have time to finish sometimes. Felt like I was studying for nothing
Wants you to analyze everything under the sun! You never know what she expects. Good luck getting an A. Don't be talkative, she likes to single out those students!
Very nice person but the worst teacher I've had. Doesn't understand if you don't talk in class, gives points on how much you talk in class, gives two 5 page papers that are impossible to get good grades on. Be prepared to give 2 presentations.

Although she is a verynice person she does not know how to teach. When writing a paper noone ever knew what she really wanted. Very hard grader.
Grades on participation, analyzes everything, you never know what she wants for your papers. would not recommend.
Dr. Mathur demands the best out of her students. I enjoyed the class immensely. It was the only true challenge I've come up against so far - the reading was extensive, I was taught how to write clearly and concisely - the hard way, of course.
She has no exams, no tests - just open book essays and book reports!
take as your only class..we read 4 books and wrote 5 papers for this class alone..essay tests only..expect to rewrite papers for her at the last minute..be careful of offers of "help"..I usually like hard profs but not this time.
Do not take her for any class unless you want your semester to be a complete nightmare
take only if you have the same views as her. everything is analyzing what happened: why it happened, how it happened, what happened because of it... tests are the same
instead of teaching history she teaches english in a history class. ITS "themes" not "teemes!!!!!"
her classes are good--not for whiners
Great teacher!! Very nice and intelligent. I was told not to take her but I'm very happy I did. You have to read a lot but the books are interesting. No tests, 4 book reviews and an essay final exam that you get ahead of time.
Don't take this class, to much English and very little history. She has a thing against the Brithish, and calls people raceist who do not agree with her. The class was not worth it. She also disagres with the book a lot.
She is very hard on grading on make you read a lot. She just keep talking for the entire class session non-stop. If you don't like history, or don't like to read. Never take her class.
Worst teacher I ever had. She is the reason my GPA dropped. She picks the worst books to read dicussions are a joke and she is a horrible dresser. I would avoid her at all costs.
Horrible class, your entire grade is based on essays and how much you talk in class so it pretty much means she grades you on what she thinks of you. She isn't clear about what she wants either. AVOID!!!!!!
A very good teacher. Take her.
Everything is about themes and analysis. Extremely tough grader on papers. She belittled me on my whole paper and wanted me to justify each paragraph without mentioning the surrounding text. But, she does give opportunities to re-do the papers.
I really liked my history class with Nameeta. She was very interesting and genuinely wanted people to learn in her class. I had a good class with a lot of out-spoken people - made for some interesting discussions. It's not a class for quiet people.
this is a horrible class...soo boring....soo unclear what she wants...if your into Themes and writing for a history class this is it...but be sure to take your NoDos
good class, but she's hard to look at. i think she might be colorblind, the way she dresses...
She is a very good professor. Enjoy all her classes
Knows her stuff. There is alot of reading, just skim thru it, seriously. All you have to do is make a couple comments & she thinks you read the whole book. Her papers are kinda time consuming, but you only have 2. Great lady!
Read a little and make some comments and you should be alright for participation. Hopefully you know how to write a "history" paper. If not she turns into an English teacher. But she lets you revise for a better grade. Overall not bad.
I can tell you that this woman is the worst teacher that I have ever had in my life. If you have a choice, do not take her class. She is a disorganized lecturer and cannot speak clear english. She also assigns a heavy workload.
I don't know about the others but I really liked her
If you don't like to talk, you won't do well. But even if you make at least 1 relevant comment a day, that ISN'T GOOD enough! I got so many points docked even though I said something every class that was relevant. That and she's obsessed with Citations.
I thought she taught a good class. If you don't want to participate or have terrible grammer and poor writing skills, this is not the class for you. She has high expectations for you, as you should for youself. If you are a slacker, don't take her.
Don't bother with this "communication intensive" class. Her "discussion points" are based of of opinion, and her idea of research is spewing other peoples opinions back out. The course sounds appealing, but won't go anywhere.
Does have a heavy workload but is very fair and helpful and most of all she is interesting.
Very interesting lady. Has a nice way of teaching and is willing to answer all questions. Nice smile too; very pleasant to be in class with.
She is the worst teacher I have come across at SVSU. Nothing will ever be good enough for her. An "A" is impossible even with open book/note tests. She is very unreasonable and insensitive to her students. She treats the class like a 300 level n
I really liked her, but if you aren't prepared to work hard then don't bother. She is awesome about late work, and if you are having trouble with anything she is more than willing to help you. I am taking her for the third time this fall, she is great!!!
TOUGH professor....class is hard to pass......
I'm not sure whether to recommend this or not. She has you read a lot of books about the Holocaust. This is a very tragic event in history, but too much sympathy too little facts. Beware tough 100pt grade scale. Also presentations are kinda tough.
This class was VERY hard for a 100 level. I would not EVER tell anyone to take it!
Very very tough class, esp. considering it's a 100 level course. Should be CI...I am having a very very hard time, and I would consider myself to be a good student. ???
I liked her before, but she changed the length of papers, from 4 to 6, that would be fine if there weren't 6 of them to write. I have more work in that class than all of my others together. I will not be taking her again.
tough, but great. take her.
Knowledgable about subject matter, but very difficult. Tough grading scale. Should be listed as CI (wasnt expecting that when I took the class.) Lots of writing. I've always done good in classes... just hoping for a C in this one.
Horrible
I've taken 5 of her classes - she's a pro. A great scholar and a cogent, effective teacher...she's got it all. Except fashion sense. On another note, does anyone know how old she is? I can never tell how old Indians are, they don't wrinkle until they're like 100. Anyway, fantastic. Take her now.
Ms. Mathur is a very nice professor who care about her students. She will spend much time with you in her office if you don't understand something. She expects a lot but it isn't too bad and the material about the Holocaust is awesome to learn. You will enjoy the discussions.
She is the hardest teacher to figure out!! TONS of reading, no multiple choice, no fill in the blank. DO NOT TAKE HER if you don't want to spend hours of reading. This is the hardest 100 level class EVER!!!!! She also gives participation points that are impossible to get unless you brown nose!!!!!!
nearly impossible to write a paper she'll be happy with. nothing good to say about her methods, much less her grading scale. go ahead and take her if you've never failed a class before, but want to see what it's like.
class is made up of three papers (3 book reviews and 3 open book/open notes exams. don't really need to buy the book to pass tests, take lots of notes! grades VERY hard, but you'll learn a lot!
She was extremely and unneccessarily hard. It seemed as if she didn't care whether you passed or failed.
I started out liking her though her class was really hard but after her unfair grading on my final paper which we spent almost 16 weeks working on it brought me from a A-/B+ to a final grade of a C+.I lost all respect for her as a instructor. She seemed to not care about if pass or fail.Stay Away!
simply the best!
Words can not articulate how terrible this instructor grades. For a lvl 100 class it sure felt like a lvl 400 CI, due to all the in class essays we were forced to write. Her Participation points are based on if she likes the content you contribute. Also she makes up words.
Terrible
A hard taskmaster! She expects a lot from her students. There will be no slacking off in her class. However the classes I've taken with her have been informative and I've learned a ton. If you can't write long papers, stay away. Otherwise, she's good. :)
Grades much too difficult for a 100 level class. Is very rude when you ask questions even in her office. Says "you should know that" rather than answering. If your opinion doesn't match her's yours doesn't matter. I would strongly advise staying far far away from Mathur. Plus she is foreign.
I have my third class with her now. She's tough, freshman, I'd advise you stay away, especially if your not into working for your grade. She makes you learn, and she is willing to help, if you are willing to make an effort, very knowledgeable on a variety of subjects. :)
Book review grading is horrible, but she is fair on in class exams. Took this class as a History Major in junior and was still tough to get a B. Would recommend Non-History Majors, freshman and students without vast experience in essay writing to stay away from her classes.
Don't take her! I am a history major, and this class was ridiculous. If you don't like to get involved in class discussion you start off with a C. So many books to read, and one final exam, which was like 1 question, but absolutley horrible!
I Hate her she was hard as hell and not very helpful at all. I had her my freshman year and I would not advise anyone to take her.
Hard teacher for a difficult class. Be prepared to work; only 100 points given. 3 book reviews and discussions for each, open book essay, research paper, and final exam. She was always willing to work with you and help you with any questions. But if you are not ready to work find another professor.
WOW! This was the hardest class that I have had at SVSU. She is very knowledgable about what she talks about though. LOTS of papers and reading, oh I took about 7 pages of notes per class!!! Not kidding.

The best ever teacher I ever had - plus she so good looking! It was a very informative class made all the more better by her.
She's the best history prof if you actually want something out of the course. Mathur is very demanding and has high expectations, but those willing to work will do fine. You don't need to be a history major or upperclassman to do well. Just prepare for lots of work - you WILL be reading and writing a ton. Note taking is a must, as is participation.
Easier class, as long as you read OR take the notes. Personally, I didn't read the recommended chapters, but I made up for it hardcore in notes. Exams were great, they were open book-analytical exams, which she describes the week before and gives you plenty of time for practice. Look out for those book reviews, I got 2/15 on my first...
Very hard but very good. Her 300-level courses are challenging but will prep you for advanced studies in history
Professor Mathur has high expectations, so those not ready to work should not take her class. But, for those of you interested in history, I can assure you that you will learn a lot. I truly enjoyed her class.
It's a great class, especially since she's a native of the country. Make sure you follow her syllabus- she's very specific but also very fair. And when she says 'don't summarize the book' for a review- she MEANS it.

I really respect this prof. She's the best I've had so far
the india course was outstanding
Professor is very knowlodgeable and I liked her teaching style, as I am a History major. However, I really dislike the fact that the exams are ONE essay question to grade what you have learned over the past month. Very difficult grading on the papers as well.
Very hard Professor, Grades on how she sees history. Grades very hard as well, some extra credit if your willing to bust your ass. Skip this teacher and save yourself the grief!!!!!!!!!!!
Has 3 book analyses + an essay final & an extra credit 4th book analysis. I forgot to mention the research paper... so that's 4 (5 if you want a decent grade) major pieces of intellectual achievement. Basically wants you to teach yourself, so I don't understand why I had to pay for her class? Take if you have FETISH for the topic.
Never take her class, Basically ruined my whole semester by it.
Very interesting professor, she really likes class discussions which makes the class much more interesting when its 7-10pm. She is very helpful if you go to her office hours, and you have to read the book to get a good grade. Tests and book reviews are difficult but you can do well if you ask for help.
She is very informative and interesting. Take notes and you will do very well.
Phsyco, Insane!!! Grade was based on 100 points total. 3 Papers plus 3 exams, all of which are to be typed and VERY SUBJECTIVE on her part. Do not take especially if you have a German Background, as she is prejudice twords germans (As shown by her selection of books).
She lectures the entire 3 hours with no visuals. It was very hard not to fall asleep. She wants the students to teach themslves so she asks a ton of questions and wastes half the time waiting for the right answer and making you feel stupid if you don't know it. If I wanted to teach myself I would have bought the book and not gone to class.
A pretty hard class for 100 level. You do learn a lot though. She is very demanding with essays and papers. I was a 4.0 in high school and never got a 100% on an essay or paper. The whole class period is a discussion. Take notes and use those for the essay tests. I didn't have to use the book to study for tests just used notes.
Be ready to read! Tons of reading that acutally applies. You need to talka a lot to gain points for participation. She is very knowledgable and passionate about what she teaches. Three 7 page papers, project w/ presentation, participation. I liked the class, intellectually challanging. Need to know how the make themes!
Be prepared to write a book. There are 3 7 page papers, and if it's even a little less than 7, she gives you a 0. In lecture, she gives information well, and seems enthusiastic. She gives you the final question beforehand, but the question is basically a summary of the whole semester. Too hard!
RUN AWAY!!! I love history and have a 3.3 GPA but I had to drop this class...the lectures have NOTHING to do with the papers and if you don't write the papers EXACTLY to her impossible standards she will tear you apart. Heed my warning...DO NOT TAKE IF YOU LIKE YOUR GPA OR VALUE YOUR SANITY!!!
Hard but very knowledgeable. Very thorough classes, you learn a lot
Great, organized teacher...have taken her twice and learned tremendous amounts both times...
Stay away from this class if you like your GPA, she gives three open book essay exams that are worth 15 pts each, 3 bookreviews 15 pts each, 10 pts for class participation and you have to read the text plus 3 aditional novels and 1 more if you want 10 extra credit pts. Class is boring and she is a very difficult professor.
this is the best class i have taken. learned soooo much.
Freshmen STAY AWAY form this class, unless you had honors history in high school. For everyone else be prepared to work hard for a good grade. Overall, hear is what you can expect: 3 book reviews worth 15pts, 3 open-book exams 15pts, discussion 10pts. This teacher looks for specific things on book reports and exams.
Stay away!! The class is based entirely on essays and she doesn't explain what she wants in them. Basically you have to cover every word she said in lecture in the essays. Plus the readings were ridiculous. I dropped in the 4th week because I was failing and I took honors history and english in high school.
horrible horrible teacher. she expects way too much out of students. the work is beyond hard. do not take this class. hardest class i have ever taken and history comes easy to me. boring. boring. boring too
She is very hard to understand, her assignments are specific, grading is tough, and there are no chances to make up points you missed out on. Class is BORING, hard to stay with discussion, and she gives "participation points". overall, total waste of time and money.
Dr. Mathur is an excellent professor! But, do not take her class unless you are prepared to learn! As long as you pay attention in class and read the books, you'll be fine. Also, read scholarly book reviews about the books she has you read, it helped me figure out what she was looking for. Take her, enjoy her, appreciate what she has to say!!!
I thought she was excellent. Not at all unclear. There is a lot of reading. It is clear that those who didn't like her simply didn't take the time to do the work. If you're looking for an easy A, this isn't the class. If you actually want to learn, it's for you.
She is a good professor, but extremely hard. There is a lot of reading and essays are graded with much scrutiny. I would recommend her with caution.
I got tired of listening to lectures about the evils of white men. Students must have knowledge of the Queen's English in order to understand instructions. Grades too harshly when mistakes are made. Can totally ruin a GPA.
I think I'll be taking my complaints to the Dean. This is the most difficult teacher to deal with. No make up points, strict attendance policy. Harsh grader. She tries to be your friend and tries to be helpful, but she is niether. STAY AWAY i repeat STAY AWAY. If u are a senior and you're looking to fulfill a CI requirement, look somewhere else!!!!
Very interesting professor. Just do the work and you will do well in class.
Great instructor! There is A LOT of reading in this class but if you do the reading and the writing assignments you can easily get an A. She is NOT hard to understand. Those who complain about her accent are most likely looking for something to blame for their poor grade. Lectures are thorough and she is always willing to help if you ask for it
To get a good grade on an essay (including tests) you have to stop just short of copying the book word for word. She leaves comments on your paper, but not constructive or helpful ones (i.e. "elaborate" or "incomplete idea"). If you are able to get any other history teacher, I highly reccommend it.
She is by far the WORST teacher I have ever had. Her lectures are so boring id rather saw my leg off then listen to them, unfortunately attendance is mandatory. Her tests are 1 essay question and no matter how much or what you write its never good enough. Whatever you do, dont take her. You WILL regret it.
In all honesty, she is a very strict teacher and even if you did follow the outline, most of it never followed the book, examples were pulled out of the air. She is very hard to understand and if you don't understand a subject and ask, she turns it into a debate rather then answering the question. I spent my days surfing the internet instead.
don't take this class if you do not like history. she doesn't care if you do good in the class or not. every day is just note taking for the whole class time. she is a little hard to understand. more people failed this class than passed! don't waste your money or time taking her if history isn't your thing!!
She is not a very good teacher at all!!! She relies on the textbook too much! there are only tests and reading assignments though. it is very hard to keep up and she is not very helpful! i do not recommend her unless you are like an expert in history!
I had a hard time with this class. Over a dozen people that were in my class dropped. Grades hard, be prepared to write, a lot.
Excellent teacher. Very Knowledgeable. If you are willing to study, then her classes are great.
Lecture is very boring! Very intelligent woman and will definitely help if you need it, but don't wait until the last minute to ask for it. Make sure you read the books and do the extra credit.
STAY AWAY!! Very intelligent woman, but not good at teaching/lectures. Has little concept of proper writing techniques, and a very, very harsh grader. Will try to assist you if you ask, but not very helpful. Again, very smart woman, but not good at teaching or analyzing the material.
STOP DROP AND ROLL! because the only thing going to get from her is Fire(Fs) if you understand what i mean.she is very intelligent women. she teaches her 100 level courses as if we were in a 3 or 400 level course and will fail you without any care whatsoever. she also has the tendency to only give out nothing but Cs, Ds, and Fs in her course and f
Her teaching techniques are terrible. I am a straight A student, and I have not gotten a higher score than a D on a paper or exam. I have worked so hard in this class, and I bet that no one else in my class is passing either. Students do not learn from 3 hour lecture and 6 hour reading assignments.
This class is difficult if you do not take notes. The reading assignments only took 2 hours if your a fast reader. The papers are graded hard but if you follow her outline for the tests you will be just fine.
This class is much more difficult than it should be. Imagine barely passing a class with open book exams and you will have a good idea of her class. Her grading seems to be completely arbitrary. I would recommend people avoid her classes if they want a decent GPA.
Great class and wonderful professor. I am a history major and this class was excellent! I am the kind of person who WORKS for my grades so if you want an "easy A", this is most defiantly NOT the professor for you. She is VERY knowledgeable an will help you, AS LONG AS YOU HELP YOURSELF AND DO THE WORK THAT IS ASSIGNED.
Though she is a good teacher, she is a tough grader. She will help you, but only if you ask. Lots of reading was required for each class. Essays are open-book, but they are anything but easy (though she seems to think they should be). I spent WAY more time on this class than any of my others and still got the worst grade I have ever gotten.
I dropped this class the first day. She is very nice and very direct, however, the amount of reading material and the types of exams were not worth the effort for me personally. The first reading assignment was 100pgs long. That's a lot, considering you have to find time to read the other novels assigned as well. the exams are nothing but essays.
She was very nice and enjoyed what she was teaching but there was simply no pleasing her when in came to test which were all hand written essays done in class. I have had other history classes in the past and none were as difficult as hers simply for the fact she is very picky about what she wants.
Hottest Professor i Have seen on campus. Very Easy gives a lot of extra credit. And loves to help students easy tests
This professor is hard. Way too hard for a gen ed class. All of her tests consist of her giving you two questions to answer a week before the test. You then will need to write a term paper on each question in order to receive an A. On test day she'll give you one of those questions about and you have to rewrite the paper in class.
I cried a lot because of Dr. Mathur and felt really humiliated when I went to her office hours for help. I did everything I was supposed to do and worked extremely hard. However, none of that seemed to be good enough. She expects way too much..believe me when I say that because I'm a hard working student.
This class was harder then my 300 level history classes. Would not take her again Or advise you to take her
There's a lot of reading; very time consuming. To get full discussion points you have to talk a lot in class. (I would recommend keeping track of how many times you partake in discussing per class). On exam days you have to try and fit "the right" examples from five chapters into one essay. Very difficult pre-req hisory class.
Actually, she is very good. Highly intelligent and knowledgeable. You have to study, but you learn so much.
I did not find the class hard. You need to write an essay for the exams. If you write good class notes, you will do very well. I got an A.
She is not easy but she is so good. You learn so much. I really liked her.
There is a lot to write but the professor is amazing and you learn a lot.
There are no assignments other than exams. They are open book, but she expects a lot of detail and isn't very clear about what exactly she wants. Discussion points are awarded, which seems juvenile to me.
Class is entirely essay based and over 2-3 ch of the textbook. She gives no guidelines, but yet she grades essays harshly. She needs to explain more if she is going to grade the way she does. She counts each class as two classes and allows for two absences, but it means you can only miss one class before she deducts pts.
The class is really easy if you take detailed notes during her lecture. The exams are all open-book, open-note and you can even write them ahead of time since they are all essay questions which she gives you ahead of time. This class requires a lot of reading, but she is overall a good professor.
Worst professor I have ever had. I am a good student and have a 3.7 GPA, however I failed her class because of the way she runs it. No one in my class is doing good, and she won't give out any grades higher than a C. Worst mistake ever taking this class. It was horrible, and she is rude. She doesn't care if you fail or pass. DON'T TAKE HER.
by far worst professor ive had so far. Is not helpful at all when you ask for help. exams are all take home essays with no guidelines given and she grades them extremely harsh! expects alot of detail but lectures dont help with essay at all. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
While she is a very nice person, this is by far my least favorite class. The lectures are long with no power point slides to look at, she just talks. There is 5 essays and that is it for points other than attendance, so if you mess those up you're in trouble. She is confusing about papers and sometimes hard to understand in lectures. Try to avoid.
Mathur is an EXCELLENT professor! She is very knowledgeable in her field. I learned a lot from her. But her classes are challenging! especially if you aren't a History major. Classes are mostly lecture, 5 books- a paper on each, and the final exam was an essay question she gives you time to prepare for. Hard class, but you get a lot from it.
Has take home essays. She says there is no page requirement but a solid 8-10 pages, single spaced would be fine. As long as you have ALL the information done in a clear way then you would be fine. The only kid that ever received full credit on ONE of his papers was 17 pages long.. It's a lot but she is an okay prof.. Find another prof if possible.
Do not take her class. Very long papers about the reading that you do, assigned two or three chapters a week, chapters vary from 20-40 pages long. The take home essays are crazy long, my longest paper was 22 pages long. Do not take if possible
Very good teacher.
I was honestly thinking about dropping this class before it started because of all the reviews, but it was a super easy class. People complain because you work for your grade but it was so easy. There were 14 reading assignments with questions and that was it. I ended up getting a 296300 with ease. Some people just don't like to work for it.
Amazing professor! Best class by far this semester. She expects a lot but is always willing to help. She even stayed well past her office hours to help those who needed it, and gave us more time on the papers if we asked. Lectures were interesting. Favorite professor I've had so far.
She is a tough grader but a very kind person. She is very knowledgeable and her lectures are very entertaining. Expect to spend less than $100 on books.
She was very helpful and wanted you to do good, but she did assign long papers. She did not have a page limit, but expected a lot of examples. My longest paper was 11 pages, but the others were about six-and-a-half pages.
Nameeta was a great teacher and very clear.. but expected WAY too much from her students and expected us all to be history majors. I am now very knowledgable in the subject matter of her class because of all the work which is good but not worth the stress through out the semester. Made me feel stupid in office hours. would NOT take again.
Great professor. Expects great work out of everyone. Lectures are difficult, but she is very knowledgeable in the course. I would definitely take again. Few points available throughout the semester. Four, 20 point papers throughout the semester and a 20 point final exam essay.
Dr. Mathur has been one of my favorite professors I've had at SVSU. She definitely has a passion for history and is very knowledgeable when it comes to European history. She has also been able to keep lectures entertaining and interesting. Papers made up the entirety of our grades and she expects a ton out of them with LOTS of examples.
Good: Challenging and fulfilling. I learned alot. I loved the lectures because she seemed so knowledgeable. The bad: Not much to say. If you struggle with writing then beware as essays and papers make up much of your grade. May come off a bit arrogant from time to time.
Although this class is challenging, her lectures are very interesting and keep you engaged. No textbook but 4 novels you will have to read and write papers on. Papers are fairly easy to accomplish and she isn't that tough of a grader. Would definitely suggest taking her for Modern Russia.
There were 100 points assigned. Each paper was given one week before due. Dr. Mathur still was an excellent professor. Take good class notes, and she'll happily fill in any blanks if you ask. Great feedback if you give her an outline or rough draft. I don't recommend her to those looking for an easy class.
Professor Mathur is honestly one of my favorite professors. The classes are graded off of 4 papers and a final essay on a book to read. Although the essays are lengthy it's about 1 per month and as long as you take good class notes and pay attention you'll be fine. I didn't open the book and I got an A, and also anything 90-100 is an A too.
DON'T DO IT unless your really into history. It's like she expects us to be history majors. I'm usually an A & B student. She assigns us LONG one-two chapters to read everyday plus an extra book we must find time to read on our own and finish for the final. Full time student? Have a 30hr+ week job? don't take her.
If you enjoy an engaging professor who fosters fantastic class discussions about really important topics Nameeta is your lady. Don't let her name turn you off, while she is from India her English and understandability is perfect. I was at first frustrated by my first assignment I got back but Nameeta is pushing me to really THINK about things.
This professor will help you pass if you go to her office hours! Papers are long but lectures are enjoyable and she does a great job making sure you know what is expected so there are no surprises. I typically am not interested in history but I enjoy her lectures. One of my favorite professors!
Dr. Mathur is a great professor to take if you are a history major. But, she expects a LOT out of the student. My longest take-home paper was 33 pages long. There's a lot of reading to do. You'll have to work really hard for an A. If you are a busy student, this isn't the class for you. If you're looking for a challenge, this is the class for you.
I loved her. She is super chill and eager to help her students. The class had two books and I had to read about four chapters a week. Few grades (five papers) and she's a tough grader. If you want a good score, reference the text often. Participation matters and you're allowed two unexcused absences. Very passionate. Made history seem interesting.
Overall, she was a great professor and very clear but she expected WAY too much from her students and for us to all be history majors. Her papers are assigned with only a week to do them and they were very time consuming. She is also a very tough grader. If you're a busy student I definitely do NOT recommend taking her class.
If you don't like history you won't like this class. Mathur is a wonderful professor who is very passionate about this subject, but she lectures without a powerpoint and tells everything in story form so while it is interesting unless you are good at taking notes it is hard to keep up. I loved this class, but I know a portion of the class failed
Take good class notes and you'll be fine, she suggests that you read the chapters before hand but if you dont you'll succeed. I would skim the chapters while writing the papers and passed with an A. The class consists of 4 take home papers and one in class final exam based of a novel she chooses. Theres even an opportunity for extra credit.
Lectures were boring. Didn't use PowerPoint except for pictures or maps, so you have to listen to everything she says in order to take solid notes. Does have an accent, but not terrible. You use the textbook and she gives an outline of what to take notes on which is super helpful, but it skips around the whole chapter which is irritating.
Professor Mathur is a very good professor. All classes are just lectures and the whole class is based on 5 essays. The first four are based on the lectures from the book, if you take good notes in class you should have no problem getting good grades on them. The final is an essay on the book that we read and the book is short and really interesting
Professor Mathur is incredible! For her South Asian Civilizations class, we had 5 papers based on class lectures and textbook readings. The material was very interesting, she was extremely well-organized, gave great feedback on all papers, and she really respects her students. Definitely ask questions and participate in class discussions!
She has unclear grading criteria and unclear instructions for papers. Grade does not reflect effort at all. Avoid if possible. You will write lots of papers for random grades with no feedback on how to improve. And you will learn to hate the word 'modernity' as it is repeated, every lecture, 50-100 times.
Since it wasn't a writing intensive class I didn't expect to write as many papers as we did. She also grades the papers very harsh in my opinion since she's picky about how its wrote. Be prepared to have to always read and take notes in classes to get a decent grade on the papers. She also talks really fast making it hard to take notes. It SUCKS
Mathur is fine. She knows history. She offers you to ask questions if you're confused. She does NOT have notes on a slide, you have to do it by word or by the book. She's amazing. only 4 essays, and the final is an essay on another book. very lecture heavy. Very passionate. Offers office hours for help on essays. Don't take if you don't like essays
There are not many assignments to do, but they are very much so information heavy. You have to know what you're talking about, and you have to put in the work. Reading the textbook is a must, and you must take good notes during class. She gives a lot of information, she's nice and will work with you, to an extent.
I think she is a great prof and her lecture style is unique but works really well for me. i learned alot more than i normally do in history classes. her papers are super confusing though and she is a tough grader. love the class itself but not the graded assignments
I have took many notes in class and write strong papers, as I have had them check by scholarly sources, and still get a low grade. There is no clear grading system.
Professor Mathur's history class was low-key. There wasn't much class work to speak of. All of the assignments we had to do were out of class work. She provides you with more than enough time to get the assignment done. Most of the class is lecturing and note taking. And she was considerate and kind to all of us.
Mathur is amazing and knows her stuff in history. If you're confused she makes sure you know your stuff. I love hisotry and all she graded you on was essays. There was 5. But she had a clear outline and as long as youf ollowed it with details you passed. She's a sweetheart and loves her students too.
Very bad. Argues with you in the office, won't help you with papers, likes to be as deceptive and unclear as possible on writing assignments. Does her grading so that you can fail by the second assignment. Don't take under any circumstances! Avoid at all costs!
The class was asynchronous-online format, so it wasn't hard at all to get through it. The way she graded assignments was a little weird since it could bounce around quite a bit but for the most part, graded assignments well enough. There aren't any exams, so this is a good way to get the credits you need.
She is really boring in lectures. It's clear that she knows what she is talking about, but is very boring and hard to focus as her slides are just photos and no words. As well her feedback on papers feels very condescending and confusing. "What happened?" is something that I get with every paper and I cant get higher than a C on her papers.
Professor Mathur's course was graded by 1 quiz, 4 papers, and a final essay - 3 of them (60% of grade) about books that were unconnected to her lectures, 80% of grade was based on work outside of class and only 20%(the final) off of the lectures that were all class every class. Her feedback was minimal and grading tough with very little context.
Inconsistent grader with unclear criteria. Feed back is then helpful and very condescending. Terrible if able to avoid any class with her I would recommend doing so.
Only graded based on assignments called LTA's. You read chapters and answer questions in paragraph form. 10 questions-10+ paragraphs per assignment. Sounds easy and usually it is, except she is a HARD grader on them. Docks points for missing small pieces of info. These are the only assignments for the whole semester. Def get the book.
I did not have any problems with this class. The assignments were all super clear. Basically, read the questions and write down the answers to them fully from the book, and you won't have any problems.
There are no exams or tests, only homework questions for each chapter. The class should be easy but she makes it way more difficult than it should be. She asks simple questions but expects complicated and long answers. Questions are out of order so assignments are very tedious. Textbook is a must, only chance of getting a B grade, and rarely an A.
She grades pretty hard, but gives feedback on what you missed and posts examples after the due date. There is a lot of reading to do for every assignment. There's only 12 assignments the whole semester, so if you do bad on a few it can be hard to get your grade back up. Super nice and helpful, very knowledgable/enthusiastic about the topic.
The assignments were straightforward, just read and summarize the textbook chapters. Grading can be tough, so be thorough. unstuck AI helped me prepare for the essays. Overall, a manageable class if you stay on top of the work.
Great professor! No quizzes or exams, only assignments are LTA's. She does dock points for information that she doesn't ask, so just add as much detail as possible to your answers (usually half a point). Get the textbook online- cheaper, and the answers are easier to find. Assignments are usually 10 questions, and she gives a week to finish them.
Dr. Mathur cares about this class. She rounded my grade by 1% which is why its a 4, not 3. Don't expect any real feedback on assignments. 19 times during the semester she said "add more" with no other context to me. This doesn't help you learn, and it only frustrates you. Because of this, she is the worst hist professor SVSU has. Find someone else.
super strict grader
Gave no feedback other than 'pull more from the textbook' even when the information put down was almost exactly as it was in the text book.
I had Professor Mathur for a few classes and really enjoyed each one. She grades tough but if you read the material you will do just fine. I needed another history class and picked her on purpose, no final exams for the three I had her for, just reading and lecture assignments.
