She's confusing sometimes. She wasn't very helpful.
Dr. B rocks!!!!

Dr. Boury has been the coolest professor I ever had. When she teaches she teaches with passion, which is very different from a lot of the professors that are here for just research alone. No one tops Dr. B!
She is great.
She's informative and makes class go by quick!! I never fall asleep and is always interested and intrigued by what she has to teach to us.
Exams were extremely detailed while lectures were more conceptual. She was frequently in a bad mood.
Professor Boury is a good teacher although she doesnt make class very interesting or exciting although she uses great pictures in her power points. The tests are very easy not counting the one on plants.
Course workbook is extremely helpful. I wish all teachers required these. She also offers extra credit opportunities.
She did a good job
Boury is the best teacher i've had so far, and i'm in the 2nd semester of my sophomore year.. she makes jokes, and if you read for the quizzes, you will no doubt do well on the tests, and getting an A in this class is definetely possible.. just do the work :-)
Very good teacher, put almost everything on powerpoint notes. Very easy to talk to and to get an A in her class (I had her for bio 201 and micro 201 and did well in both).
Good teacher and easy to stay awake too. Lecture notes were clear for exams. Except towards the end of the semister I felt rushed and didn't do so hot on the last exam and final. Ended up with a B though.
Dr. Boury turned in the wrong grade for me and then it took her months to fix it with the registrar's office. She acted like it was my fault. She didn't seem very committed to her students. Also, she is really really weird.
Worst Prof. I've had at ISU, unclear expectations, gets derailed easily, writes insulting comments on students papers, does not cover close to the amount of material on the sylabus, Do not take Genetics with her if you can wait for a different section
She tests on material that is covered in the book. If you don't read EVERY tiny detail you will miss a lot of questions on the tests. She tests you on too many chapters and expects you to memorize EVERYTHING you read. Don't take her if you can help it!
Fun, interesting, and great sense of humor.
She is horrible, she gets off topic all of the time and she really doesnt know what she is talking about. She makes stupid class discussions and gets way off topic, and then yells at us for talking when she started the conversation.
She is a very good teacher. I was not a big fan of Biology when I found out that I have to take the class, but she seems to know what she is doing and I am doing very well in the class, even though I had never taken biology before this year.
I loved Dr. Boury, she puts a study guide online and if you study that and your notes getting an A on tests is very possible. She is fun and doesn't bore you to tears.
She SUCKS! It's like she's taking out her problems on us. Her tests are harder than anything else, you have to not only learn and memorize every single word, but you have to do a Ph.D. on it in order for you to get a desent grade on her f***ed up tests.
She is a horrible person to be teaching Biol 211. She is brilliant but seems to think we are all just as brilliant. You literally have to memorize the WHOLE book. She has way too high of expectations on the exams because the exams are unbelievably hard!! Unless youre a Biology genious, avoid having her as your instructor!!
She is probably the best bio 211 teacher. She makes it easy by giving you study guides for the tests that basically have all you need to know on them. I didn't read or study very hard but I did the study guides and came out with an 86 overall.
I wish she could teach all of my Bio classes because her tests are really easy and the review class before the test she bascially goes over everything that will be on the test. I took AP bio in high school so that might have helped but she is interesting and makes it easy to get an A.
This class was a ridiculous amount of work. Between homework, WebCT homework, WebCT discussions, quizzes and exams there was always something due. She could be really rude one-on-one, and had expectations that were, in my opinion, too high for the level she's teaching.
Great lectures, enthusiastic teaching, I wish I could take all my biology classes with Dr. Boury. Her study guides really do help for the tests. She does everything she can for the students.
Dont take genetics with her.....
Really good teacher and a really interesting class if youre willing to do a little work. Its not overly easy, but you'll learn a lot.
She definitely has enthusiasm for the class and really understands what she's teaching, but she can get pretty off-track rather easily. Tests were pretty easy.
Dr. B is an amazing person - she is so smart and communicates well so you know that she knows what she's talking about. She's also my advisor - she was helpful in and out of class and some one I really looked up to and enjoyed having as a prof. I hope more are like her!
Shes a good teachers and has great notes but gets angry easily over little things, so try to keep the people around you quiet and you should be fine.
Dr B is a very good teacher. She has study guides for every chapter & I managed to get an A on every exam except one (88%, got dropped anyway) just by doing them. I never opened the book. She can seem a bit rude sometimes, but it's just an impression. She's nice, replies to e-mails quickly & loves teaching. You get points for attendance.
Nancy was kind of an airhead which made it difficult to take her seriously at times. Although she was quite good at her subject matter, I think that she was one of my least favorite to endure.
Dr. Boury is great. Definately go and talk to her if you don't understand something. She does expect you to have done the reading, and can go through topics kind of quickly. Doesn't tolerate distractions (iPods, talking, cell phones, etc) in class; which is another great thing about having her as a professor. Read & do homework, you'll do well!
Pretty good professor
The tests are difficult if you do not keep up with the material!
I really liked her as a teacher we have some idiots that sit in the front row and try to tell her how to teach and she just blows them off nicely. She really doesnt like talking in class but she is really clear at teaching and she is constantly making sexual jokes which is really hilarious. I really enjoyed her class but do homework!!!
she is very nice
Teaches effectively, speaks loudly, exams aren't terribly difficult, and the assignments are few and far between. She does seem very intent on everyone being quiet in class, and will huff & puff until everyone shuts up, which can get annoying (especially if you have a loud or disrespectful classroom).
Great prof, google "List of best ISU professors", she's in it and deserves it.
Dr. Boury was completely useless as an instructor for this class. All she did was sit there and watch while we presented papers in class. Then she had us write grant proposals which none of us had done before and never instructed us on how to do it.She treated everyone like they were stupider than her. Overall terrible attitude and bad teaching.
Great class but summer speed was tough. Learned something new every day. Dr. B. would answer anything and really wanted us to succeed. Tests were hard.
Waste useful class time with science in the news. Can not control class, class spends more time talking then learning!
She made me feel stupid
horrible professor, i would reccomend no one take classes with her, not understanding. Nit-picks everything. shows bias
Vocab was a killer, but Dr. B. explained things well. Was fantastic on a one-on-one.
She was not an easy professor to learn from.Lectures were not clear. She wasnot helpful at all and made you feel stupid if you asked questions in or after class. I would not recommend her as a professor. I got a horrible grade in the class and had to retake it. I got an A my second time around with another professor. That has to tell you something.
Too smart for her own good. Not super understanding. Went way to fast during lecture. Class was required for participation points which made it really disruptive because people would come but not pay attention and talk all the time.
Hilarious! Very entertaining and helpful. Clicker points are cool and so are the two tries you get for the quizzes!
She was a little cooky but I really enjoyed having her as a teacher! You could tell she is really interested in what she teaches. She made study guides for us to complete prior to each exam and even though they took awhile to complete they were definitely helpful in the end. I would recommend taking the class with her. She doesn't make it boring
Be prepared to be yelled at, including if you go to her "open" office hours. Don't expect her to return your e-mails. She is constantly cranky, and she is always right. Get on her "favorites list" or she will always dislike you and treat you accordingly.
She acts like a crazy person and teaches too fast. She assumes you know everything coming into the class and she is just building on your previous knowledge. I came from a school of 45. I dont know anything. Before this class I really enjoyed bio but now I might switch my major.
I don't see how people do bad in her class. She keeps things interesting. I've never had any problems with her not e-mailing me back or issues with her office hours. You also get to retake all the quizzes and have one dropped. Plus extra credit you get to choose to do. The people bad talking probably didnt do the work but thats your own fault.
She went really fast, but you get two tries on the quizzes and clicker points, so it isn't terribly difficult.
Teaches well, but is sporadic. This is a class where relying on the book is crucial. Plan to put in a lot of time studying, the smallest portion of the material in class is fair game for the tests!
great class. go to class, read through the book and its impossible to fail
SHES AWFUL. DOnt take genetics with her!!!!!!! Her lectures do NOT match her tests and she overload you with work. I have to learn SEVEN chapters in one week. She does NOT understand that all of this crap doesnt come easy to everyone. Horrible teacher.
BAD! Starting out I thought it would be fine, 2 attempts on quizzes, cliker points and homework but NO! I can barely pass the quizzes. They have nothing to do with lecture far more in depth. She tries to trick you and makes the questions very difficult. She goes very fast. DO NOT TAKE!
Summer speed was really tough, but I loved the analagies and taking the quiz 2x. Dr. B. would always answer any questions I had - e-mail or office hours.
So unhelpful, a little disrespectful, and a bit socially tactless. People skills do have a great effect on how well you teach, you know. Took as a summer course & don't recommend it or her.
Dr. B. Rocks - cool stories, shows how microbes influence everything. Tough course, but the study guides helped and she was always available.
My favorite teacher! She's so funny and tries her best to help all her students succeed.
I found her to be quite rude during class (like answering her daughter's phone calls) and she would frequently go off on tangents that wouldn't relate to biology. The assignments are incredibly long for hardly any points and when I went in to ask her for help her response pretty much was "Oh you should know this it was in the book".
My favorite teacher. I was nervous about Biology at first but because I have her I cannot wait to go to Biology class now. She makes everything seem so easy, and there a re a ton of free points in the class to make up for a bad quiz.. Great teacher.
One of my favorite professors by far. Keeps lectures interesting and gives study guides to go with each test. Also gives tons of easy assignments to help pad your grade.
I love her. She is SO. INCREDIBLY. SMART. I went into this class very nervous-- I'm not too good at biology-- but now, it's one of my favorite classes. Is it easy? No. Impossible? No. She gives study guides for every quiz, and each quiz gets two attempts (different every time). Do the study guides and homework, and you'll get out with at least a B
LOVED HER! She is so passionate about biology and makes classes fun and interesting. The tests can be hard, but she gives you study guides that tell you exactly what will be on them and two attempts. She gives assignments and extra credit opportunities to help keep your grade up. One of my all time favorite teachers.
Dr. Boury does a pretty good job. Her quizzes are kind of hard and definitely require studying and reading the book a little, but she offers so many points through class assignments and clicker points that it's pretty hard to not do well. I recommend going to class because she doesn't include all the notes in her slides. Overall, a good prof.
If you go to class you should be fine. You get two attempts on every quiz and she lets you have a maximum of 10 extra credit points. The homework takes a lot of time and it is for only a few points, but it does help you learn the information.
Pretty easy class if you attend lecture and do the assigned homework, which is long, but helps you understand the material more. She allows 2 takes on quizzes, which are 25-26 questions. Throws in a personal story here and there to make the class enjoyable. She is approachable and will help if she can.
She was great in lecture! She really made sure to simplify the information so that you understand them. She has that "science dork" humor that I found hilarious. There is only one finaltest and the rest are quizzes and occasional homework. She gives you two chances for the quiz and makes a study guide for you. She really wants you to succeed!
Clicker questions are easy points, but you have to be in class to get them! She's also pretty good at explanations of difficult concepts.
Loved this teacher but reading the book is essential!! Test questions are very in depth and clicker questions can be difficult. This class was hard!
Really disliked this class. I was pretty interested in biology before having her, but she made me hate going to class! Quizzes were very hard, and even though you get two attempts, you can never see which questions you missed! (Kind of defeats the purpose..) She was funny and friendly, but avoid her if you can so your GPA doesn't suffer!
I did better in this class when I stopped going to her lectures and just studied on my own. Her lectures are pointless and she goes on tangents for half of the class. Spends too much time showing videos that make no sense. If you want to pass the test, don't rely on her lectures.
Dr. Boury is the best teacher I had this semester! Her lectures are easy to follow and very imformative. She even lets us take our quizzes twice... and she let us have two attempts at the final as well! The class is pretty easy if you study and make use of the SI sessions. I wish she taught Bio 212!! Overall, she's freakin awesome.
Bad class! I found her exams to be too hard for a lower level micro class. Also she was a bit unwilling to answer my questions. Her notes don't have much information on them that pertain to the study guides. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone.
Loved the study guides and the stories. Once I started doing the study guides, the exams were easy. If you don't do your work or go to class, this course would be impossible!! Dr. B. was friendly and always replied to e-mails and answered questions!
She does not write tests well, will update grades late and tendency to go on tangents that are not even the full truth. She is able to articulate the information well.
It's a hard class but she makes it interesting. She's willing to clarify and answer any question. The quizzes are very hard because are based on critical and analytical biology problems. DO NOT MEMORIZE THE BOOK! She gives study guides which are extremely helpful.
She doesn't help at all. She is very boring. Her tests are extremely hard, and are not written well.
She seems like a nice lady, but what she discusses in the lectures and what the homework is relates very little to what the quizzes are about. She quizzes are very difficult, and even with the study guides, they are hard to study for.
Great professor and very helpful. Complete the study guides and keep up with the reading and you'll do great!
I will hopefully never take another class by her again. Her lectures are in depth and she articulates well. Unfortunately, it seems as though she doesn't like to be asked questions before or after class (she got irritated and wouldn't answer my question). Also, she get frustrated easily. Her quizzes do not relate to lecture.
great professor! very helpful, study guides for tests and puts all her lecture notes online. Will clarify things you are fuzzy on if you ask her.
Exams don't really match study guides and online assignments are irrelevant.
The study guides are very helpful and Dr. Boury allows two attempts on an exam. Some days you watch the lecture online before class and come to class to have a group discussion on it. This is helpful if you learn best by participating in groups.
She encourages one way of studying the material. She has a thing called "flip day" where every other class requires working in groups and it's a waste of time because attendance is mandatory regardless of your circumstances. She is extremely rude when you need something from her. Exams are multiple choice which is not a good test of knowledge.
Shes the best
Quizzes are extremely hard. I'm a micro major and had a efficient knowledge of bio. It's hard, hard and hard. Good luck with her.
She taught my first ever biology college class and it made for an even more rude of an awakening as you would think. Quizzes are extremely hard. Says that they follow the study guides word for word but I knew the study guides and still did not do well on the quizzes. I recommend taking it with someone else if you want to do well.
I was told this class would be a GPA booster because it was easy. It's not exactly the easiest, even though I love biology. Lectures are boring and she mostly just reads off the powerpoint. Does take clicker attendance, and she does sometimes do in-class activities. Her tests can be confusing, but do the study guides and you'll probably do ok.
If you go and talk to her in person she's very helpful - don't hesitate if you have a question she's not scary I promise. As long as you actually pay attention to the lecture and take notes (as well as read the chapters) you shouldn't have too much trouble with the overall class.
Even though I went to every single class, paid attention, took notes, and did homework, I still came out with a poor final grade. No matter how hard I studied, I could never get a good grade on the quizzes. The class is easy to understand and the homework helps, but the test questions are extremely difficult. I did not enjoy her as a professor.
She gives a lot of chances for you to get all your points for clickers and homework but most of the points come from the 6 "quizzes" you take. Make sure to do the study guides and you'll do fine on them.
She is very passionate about biology. There is a lot of extra credit. Tests are difficult. Do the study guides and review her power points. You don't really need the textbook/
She comes off scary in e-mails but once you confront her face to face about any concerns or questions, she is very very helpful. I really enjoyed her class but you do have to be on your feet and take this course seriously. She allows the quizzes to be retaken but it is different than the first attempt. Clicker points matter, show up for class.
"Full flipped classroom" setup-- sucks for people with social anxiety, but I made it. You watch/read all lectures online before class then come to class for clickers and group work. Otherwise decent professor, knew what she was talking about and was pretty funny. Tests were kind of tough but her study guides are helpful.
Great professor and always there when you need her. She takes so much of her time to research the most effective learning styles and incorporates all of them into her classes.
Quizzes are difficult, recorded lectures are confusing. NEVER replied my email. She is very unfriendly to online students. If you need take this class, DO NOT choose online version.
Stop by during office hours - she really likes to help students! We spent an hour on 4 problems one afternoon she walked me through it until the material "clicked". Dr. B. rocks.
Took her class online, lectures are between 20-40 min, one every single day. Some days there are 2 or 3 to watch in one day. Boury is really approachable and inspirational. Although her test are very difficult, I could never manage to get a good grade, no matter how hard I studied there was SO much material.
Consistently started lecture 5-10 minutes late; always with an excuse as to why it was not her fault. Unclear in student expectations. Condescending. In short, she is an overqualified high school Biology teacher who spends more time talking about why science is fun/cool than actually doing or teaching science. Worst professor I have had to date...
Dr. Boury is an amazing teacher - she uses stories to make the info real. Always available after class and reaches out to students that are struggling. If you don't work in her class, you won't do well though.
Her lectures can be somewhat interesting. Tests are way too in-depth. "Study guides" are loosely phrased questions that basically mean "know every little detail or you fail." Studied harder in this class than any other class I've ever taken and still did not do well. You either know the stuff or you don't, and the tests are like a foreign language.
Dr. Boury is a very interesting woman. Lectures are word for word out of the book. Test are the worst. Class average is on test is about 68%. If you don't show up, you will miss attendance point and be lost when it come to the exam. There is little homework. If you don't study for the exams for hours for the exams expect to fail.
She's funny in class. I learn a lot about why this matters (the Radium Girls story was creepy). Tests are tough, but if you pay attention in class and do the study guides, you should be fine.
She's funny in class and always encourages students to come in and see her. I went into her office hours a lot and only one time she was extremely rude to me and told me if I guessed "C" was the correct answer on all of them I would have gotten a better grade on my exam. GO INTO HER OFFICE BETWEEN EXAM ATTEMPTS. She will go over the whole thing.
Be sure to fill out study guides over a course of time and make sure they are accurate! They're your best tool of getting good grades on the exams. Exams are tough, so spend a good amount of time studying for it. Attend lecture for easy clicker points. Homework answers all found online. You don't need to read textbook, but use to help fill guides.
The class isn't difficult, if you watch the lectures at home (she does flipped classrooms) and participate in class, you'll be okay. If you're good at biology classes, you should be able to get a B+-A. The professor is not very responsive and does not always email back when you ask for help. When you go in for help, she's condescending and rude.
She's really there for students. Just got out of a study session and it really helps to be able to ask anything. Love the stories about diseases. Don't skip class, though and make sure to do the study guides as you go!
Boury is a great teacher, but makes you work for it. Slides don't have much info, so you have to watch the lectures to get much out of it. Exams are tough, but she provides study guides and offers to help. Went to her office last week and wish I had done so sooner, she made genetics look easy.
This class was very difficult for others and I. Quite a few of us went in for help and felt quite discouraged after meeting with Dr. Boury. She will send emails and say in class that she is there to help us succeed, but I did not get that feeling when meeting with her. She is quite rude and makes you feel ridiculous for asking simple questions.
Dr. Boury does a great job of making sure that every student understands, and can usually tell when a student is confused. Make sure to read the syllabus clearly and be ask questions as this will help understand content. Attending class isn't required, but a lot of points can be received by participating in class room discussion and small groups.
She gives out study guides for every section. Do them! Also go to lectures, not all the information will be in the slides or the readings. She has a pretty dry sense of humor, but I personally enjoy it. She's easy to approach and loves when people ask questions or come in for help.
Attend class but optional---READ according to her assigned reading charts. Complete the study guides and assignments. Class is just a very concise review of what you read. The context is in your study guides. Attendance not required--I only went 6 times. Don't wait last minute to do study guides. Test study guide, assignment, readings STUDY!
She tries to be funny but I was too worried about passing to care. Bio211 is a heavy class with a ton of information and I always felt she was talking down to her students. She is VERY nitpicky about certain information, more so than other bio professors. Also her final is cumulative and the exams are longer in this class than other bio211 classes.
She takes time after class to really talk with students - several of us would ask about bio and she spent 30 minutes going over plant cycles until we got it. Wish all my profs cared as much. Love all the homework and in class points.
Shes super sweet and she really cares about her students. She is very clear about what she expects of you and what you need to do to pass the class (do the study guides duh). I cant wait to take more classes from her. My favorite professor.
Amazing professor, gives you everything to succeed in class. If you ever go to her office hours look at her bookshelf and notice that it is full of books on teaching methods. She cares deeply about education and how to become a better lecturer. She is also an extremely interesting character with endless stories.
Honestly, she's a good lecturer in general. I would give her an A+ for effort alone. But the way she talks to the students makes it look like she looks down on us. She takes up a lot of time making jokes instead of teaching us during valuable class time. Not a particularly fun class and she could be doing better.
She goes way through fast through slides-- so be sure to take notes beforehand on her powerpoint slides. She also gives more information in class than what is one the slides online. Tests are easy and can be taken twice.
I went in office hours to go over course materials because I was in the online section. She talked down to me and made snide remarks about me to her lecture sections which I heard about during lab. I found this discouraging & unprofessional and did not want to go back to office hours. Be careful about seeing her because she talks down to students.
Spent time after class to ask questions - she is VERY approachable, has great stories and cares how you're doing. Gives great study advice and fantastic study guides. If you don't do your work, she'll call you on it. I guess that's what they mean by "talking down"? I don't know - I've always felt like she wanted me to succeed.
Nancy made me and several of my peers feel very beneath her and was unwilling to help. I had a problem with a computer and lost any notes I had from her lectures, which are what makes up the test, and she offered little help the day before the exam. Goes over material that most have never seen before very quickly.
My favorite professor at ISU and I just graduated. Clear expectations, e-mails if you miss more than a couple of classes, answers questions and connects info from other classes to Micro. I wish she taught more of my classes.
Not a good professor at all. Would not recommend. Her exams are very hard and she makes them with a pool of questions so you either get the hard test or the easy one. The highest I ever got on one of her exams was a 66%
She doesnt prepare you for her test. Is an awful professor. Would tell you not to take any of her classes
If you show up and do the study guides, you should be fine. They take a long time to do, but worth it. The exams are from the study guides and she answers most of the study guide questions in class. The clicker points an odd system, but otherwise, the class has been GREAT. Enthusiastic teacher that really cares and gives you all you need.
Really sweet professor & seems like she cares about your education. If you don't put in the work, it's pretty difficult to get the grade you want. Come to class and you get participation points. Doesn't grade everything on time so you may not know what your current grade is. I never filled out the study guides and didn't hurt my grade that much
Very hard tests that touch very briefly on lecture notes. Good teacher overall but exams are difficult and uses lots of application and
Gives study guides that she copies and pastes questions onto exams from or changes them slightly. Takes clicker questions during class for credit. If you read and pay attention in lecture, you should be fine.
She is big on group learning. Therefore she has a horrible class structure and wastes your time. No clear schedule of her teaching material. Flipped days at least once a week with questions at minimum one hour. Class is still mandatory with group sheets you have to fill out and top hat questions. She is straight crazy. But tests are realistic.
Has "flip days" where we work in groups. I was scared at first, but having people to talk to in class really helped. We would get together to study for exams. She was great to talk to after class and during office hours and was happy to help answer questions. She has great stories.
She is not a good professor because her exams and very extremely specific and I am not good with exams that specific. She does not curve the class which it would help a lot of people in the class that are like me that work hard but are not good in exams. However, the class is very helpful for MCAT, and graduate and professional school overall.
At first, I wasnt sure about her as an instructor; she made comments/accusations which discouraged me from coming to her to ask questions. However, she is a great professor. Her lectures are amazing and informative. My only hope is that she tries approaching/talking to students more carefully so they do not feel like theyre being talked down to.
Though I liked professor Boury as a person, she is not the kind of professor I prefer as a teacher. A lot of the information you need for the exams come from the textbook and online learning. I also felt the lectures were very much a skim of the required material. She is very willing to help you outside of class and explain things in more detail.
Her tests are fair, and she only tests over what she teaches in the lectures. The homework is actually helpful and not a waste of your time so that is nice too. Normally I hate online classes but she did really well with this one. There is extra credit that isn't too much work but can really boost your grade. Overall a really good professor.
Gives study guides, holds study sessions before exams, makes lectures fun, clicker points, slide show + verbal presentation
She always moves back exams or extends the time your have to take them. She also lets you take them twice. Homework is easy and you can skip a couple classes without getting decked for points
Nancy Boury is a great Bio 211 teacher! She listens to her students feedback and gives two takes on each exam. She really cares about her students and has the option of making a "bio meme" as extra credit! Definitely would take her class again.
Great prof. There is daily participation points, but I skipped about 7 lectures and still got my A. Make sure to review the study guides, there will be stuff on there that she tests on that isn't in the lecture. I only did the readings for lectures that I missed or unfamiliar topics.
This class was entertaining and gave a good overview of the different aspects of biology. Lectures were interesting and fun, and included points for participation. The tests could be tricky, but you were allowed two attempts and there were online study guides and quizlets for every unit. She is very easy to learn from!
Disorganized, links don't work, changes test material the week of. Will randomly assign homework and you have 24 hours to complete it. Should be an easy and straightforward class, but she makes it a pain. She has out of classroom lectures so that she doesn't have to teach as much, and refuses to upload essential information for exams. Avoid Taking!
Dr. Boury is a nice professor and is there to help you and everything, but the class itself SUCKS and (in my opinion) she makes it way harder than it needs to be.
If you're a micro major. You know. Go to class. Nancy is cool and you will learn the material. Use the study guides, quizlets and ASK QUESTIONS. I bombed this semester cause 'RONA.
There is quite a bit of homework. I spent about 3 hours outside of class each week, and more on exam weeks. There are 4 exams, each one you can take twice and then a final. The final is treacherous. The first two exams were easy, the last two were much harder. Do the study guides and homework. Beware of when flip days are due.
She cares so much about her students. Her tests are very hard, however she does give study guides from which the test was written. It is just important to know those study guides inside and out. She drops a test at the end. There is just weekly homework, but they are easy to complete. She truly loves what she does, and is amazing at teaching.
I have had Dr. Boury for three separate lectures, Micro 302, Micro 101, and Bio 211. Boury has clear outlines for Micro 101 and Bio 211. The tests are easily doable if you have filled out the study guides and took the time to understand them. Micro 302 seemed to be less organized with random flip day, etc. Overall, a good professor.
I took this last year ... Absolutely hands down my favorite professor at Iowa State. She loves her subject and goes miles to make sure you'll fall in love with biology too. She uses good pictures and explanations. Do the learning catalytics quizzes! Her tests are sometimes hard, but studying pays off. I switched to biology because of her class!
I took Dr. Boury as a summer class online so it might be different in person during the fall and spring semester, but I pretty much taught the course to myself. The textbook is straightforward as are the test. I did one WebEx with her and she appeared to be a yeller so I did not attend any more. If you are focused and can teach yourself easy A.
She is very caring towards her students and if you reach out to her for help she will make time to assist you. However her grades are mainly exams and they are not fairly easy. Though she does give study guides, you have to really pay attention in the lectures and to make special time to study out of class for a good grade.
I was told to take this class by my advisor, but I regret it. It happened to be my hardest class of the entire semester and it was an elective. Do not take it if it is not required or you are not a micro major... not worth it. She isn't a bad professor, but her tests are hard and she throws in one-word mistakes to throw the whole question off.
Lets be real, she isn't your teacher she's your SI instructor. You will do everything outside of class and then review inside class. I'm talking 2-3 chapters reading, online recorded lectures and study guides by yourself and then to come into class with questions because she isn't going to teach but review it and attendance is mandatory for points
Study guides did not help me study for exams and when I emailed her where a study guide answer was, she would just say to watch the lecture. She would share quizlets and study resources but they were only vocabulary and not concepts. Study guides were long and one question asked many different things.
You have to teach yourself all the information at home. The class is meant for review. The majority of students did not go to class, and those that did were way behind on the material she was talking about. When she asked students what she could do better, they said "Teach more in class, less review", she got defensive and did not change a thing.
She started every day with vocab games that really let me know where I needed help and asked the class which study guide problems we wanted to review. Didn't waste my time by making study guides (they were hard to do but my friends and I split them up and it made the class so much easier). She cared how I was doing and wanted me to succeed.
I had Dr. Boury for BIOL 211 and MICRO 101. She gives study guides for every unit, which are essential to success in her classes. They take a super long time to fill out but in my opinion, you don't need to be excessively thorough to still do well on exams. I didn't fill them out toward the back half of the class and that is reflected in my grade
The lectures were very informational. She made test taking very easy. I would definitely recommend having her as your professor.
Dr. Boury is great! She made the content easy to understand and make connections with. I enjoyed the corny jokes she made during class, as they kept me awake. Content is heavy, but a lot of repetitions from previous biology knowledge. If you have a strong biology background, don't stress over this class. If not, put in the time to study for exams.
She was pretty good overall as a professor, but she is NOT good with computers. I had issues with some of my assignments bugging out and submitting before I was finished, hence the grade, and she had no idea how to help. Other than that, she was kind and understanding when students asked questions. Kinda funny too.
Did a great job with explaining what she was teaching. Quizzes were easy because they were mostly all vocabulary based. You really have to be able to apply knowledge on exams because it involves you using vocabulary to understand a longer question. I was told to take this class before coming here. Expected it to be easier because of that.
She is an awful teacher. Won't respond to emails. Will comment on exams but won't give feedback. Her exam questions are so out of pocket good luck trying to figure out where they come from. Can pass O chem with an A but worked my ass off to get a C in this class. I don't think it is the student. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!
Not the best, she doesn't actually teach- she reads off powerpoints. Its hard to pay attention when it's uninteresting and i'm getting read to.
if you have her for bio 211 drop or change to a different teacher. Her lecture notes barley help when you take exams and her practice exams are nothing like the actual one. Some times there are fill in the blanks, but when you try to look back at when you're studying she never post the answers for them.
She gets sassy when people ask her questions. She explains difficult concepts well but it is very boring to listen to.Expect to either read the textbook outside of class or watch her lecture videos on your own time, she doesn't go in detail through all the content during lecture.Class is fast paced. She has study guides but no practice exams.Hard exam
Hard Exams. I took it online, so I am not sure how it was for in person lectures. The online lectures were boring, but were very important when it came to filling out the study guides. Use the study guides for the exams!!! But that can only help you so much. She tries to trick you on exams and the final was MUCH harder than it needed to be.
Tough class, but using resources like Quizlet and Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helped me grasp the material. Attendance is a must, but lectures can be dry. Exams are tricky, so stay on top of the study guides.
She jumps around a lot and can get off-topic, but she makes the class interesting. She uses Blooket as a class review, which I found helpful. She posts Quizlets and Kahoots, so the reviewing for tests is very easy. We did solo quizzes and then a group quiz to get more points. Overall, if you go to lecture, you will pass, even if you miss a few.
She's a good professor. She reviewed topics in class the week before the exams. Some in class quizzes but you can work in groups for 50% of them. She allows a notecard to be used on exams and you have 2 tries on exams. She takes the better of the 2 scores. She makes quizlets or blookets you can also use to study. She has knowledge in teaching too.
Material isn't too hard. She makes study guides so you know exactly what to expect on exams. Exams also have 2 attempts, which is nice. The only time I had to read the textbook to fill out the study guide was for unit 1. I haven't read the textbook since. Watch the lecture videos before class and show up to get attendance points and you'll be fine.
I hated this class her lecture space was so small and there were too many people, take this class online if possible, do not take in person
These exams are actually so ridiculously hard for no reason. Multiple choice is worded so horribly just to try to confuse you. Some of them have 6 options all of them being similar options. I have fit all the review stuff onto my notecard and it still didn't matter because unless you know every fine detail of the huge amt of material you're screwed
This professor can teach but has the worst attitude I have ever seen from a professor towards students. She accused an entire class of cheating on the last assignment of the semester and waited to grade it until the last day of finals week. Never heard good things about her attitude in other courses and she is not afraid to be rude to students.
I LOVE Dr. Boury! lectures are super engaging, she includes lots of diagrams and every few weeks we do a case study which is so interesting. She gives a detailed study guide for each week and it follows the lectures pretty closely so that was my lifeline during her class and made it pretty clear what would be on each exam! Overall 10/10 recommend!!
This is the hardest class I've taken. I stopped watching her online lectures each week because they were so boring and didn't actually help me do good on the exams. You can fill out the study guides she provides and practice the quizlet, but the exams are still incredibly HARD. Don't take this class unless you absolutely have to!
Dr. Boury was funny in class, but read directly off the lecture slides, making lectures very boring. There are in-class clicker questions and some group activities, so attendance is required. I recommend using her study guides for exams, as they cover a lot of material. There are some exam questions that are poorly written, which is frustrating.
I took this class online, and whenever I had questions or needed clarification, I reached out to the professor. Unfortunately, I did not receive responses.
Great Professor. When I took micro 3020 though, the lectures weren't teaching a lot of new material, unless it was a case study. More like just glazing over info she expected you to learn by yourself. Lecture was very hard to pay attention to. Clear grading criteria and easy to ask questions before or after class. Lots of extra credit.
