Good notes... fair tests
Never went to class, got a good mark. She can't be too bad
Auntie Em, those are some mad get-ups!
she's adorable, and nice. very clear and willing to help. a great teacher.
She takes the stuff right from the book! But she's a really nice person. Her teaching isn't great, but not bad either. I like her voice and her curly hair
wow. her voice is somewhere between a muted lawnmower and the buzzing on a 1970's fridge
She's a sassy lady. Her TA's are very helpful and for the most part, she's an alright teacher. Except for her midterm exams a wee bit on the tough side
Boring as anything, never went to class, still passed, sign of a good prof...?
Her hand gestures are the only reason worth going to class. Otherwise, you might as well just read the text and teach yourself.
I found her class notes to be INCREDIBLY easy to study from. I just did the work and went to classes (for the notes) and did very well.

really fair if you take the time to do the exercises.
Very boring class. She was a nice person, but just re-wrote the textbook definitions in lecture. Going to class felt pointless.
Very boring. Really nice though, and really easy. An ok teacher if u can stay awake.
her lectures are like fighting in the WWII. extremly brutally boring and my brain almost could make it the 75 mins mornong class. ...nice person though
just dont go sober
Don't ask questions in class or she will rip off your head and**** down your throat, good format though, the exercises were all you had to do.
I'd say she's very easy...as long as you do the exercises for practice, you'll do fine on quizes and the exam...plus she gives bonus marks...class avg was pretty high last semester (high seventies)
Don't bother asking Prof Bower any questions, as she doesn't know any of the answers. If its not in the text book she won't have a clue.
useless prof who re-taught intro micro. Left me unprepared for advanced micro. only upside was a ridiculously easy A... especially for econ
Great person. Do the assignments... exams typical of assignments. Lectures can be dull but the material isnt party topics. OVERALL VERY FAIR PROFESSOR. WOULD RECAMEND...
always the usual with her, boring but fair if you do all the work.
Boring. Somewhat fair. I love her clothing.
Lectures are dull, assignments easy and exams are fair.
definitely wasnt very helpful
Mathematical Economics - She litterally read the textbook. Lectures were useless. Ask any question and she referred you to the page of the text.
Most boring lectures ever but quizzes and assignments are extremely easy if you try the excercises
You probably won't learn much because her classes are always watered down compared to how other profs seem to teach them. She is much easier, but just real boring to listen to. Nice lady though.
I had Bower for Math Econ, Econ Stats, Theory of Finance, and Econ of Equity Markets. Shes a nice lady, go to her office hours and she will help you out with any questions you might have. Yes shes alittle boring in her lectures but she teaches you everything you need to know and she has very fair exams and midterms.
Nancy is a great teacher. She will always explain things if clairification is needed. she will take the time in office hours to ensure you understand. Highly Rec....
She's really helpful outside of class and her exams are fair. Extremely important to finish all your readings before a midterm (majority of course is in the text) and the lectures are benificial if you chosse to attend. :) She's a nice prof. too...
Not mean enough.
I found her to be very very rude and degrading to students. I have always had issues understanding economics, but I always pull off around a 60%, which is okay. But, when I ask her questions, for example, about the exam 3 weeks before the exam date, she was very rude to me and said that my question was dumb I'm sorry a professor should not say that
boring and seems really rude. She likes to come off as a toughie and when people are confused after she takes a random stance on something, she keeps deepening her attitude to irrationality until she just becomes insufferable. Just because I got a good grade in her course does not mean I'm going to give her a good review *glances around*
Nancy is a kind-hearted professor who really went out of her way for me. Nancy it is greatly appreciated, you're the best~
This Class consists more of readings. If you do your readings and try to adapt the concepts by reading up on stocks and bonds then you will ace it without going to class.
Must put in time for the course to do well
As someone who is pursuing their masters in statistical finance, Nancy really helped give a clear cut introduction to the world of finance. This course was difficult as a statistics major with limited finance knowledge then but I am extremely happy that I took it as it has proved a useful tool for what followed. Go to class & put effort in.
She makes the course 10x harder than it needs to be... Also if you seek clarification, shes just rude. Avoid when possible
Confusing and rude
She's alright
Challenging course unless you're a calc genius. Don't skip class unless you want to read that giant textbook...
She goes step by step in her examples, you do have to pay attention in her class or write down notes and try to learn it later. She always addressed my emails in a timely matter. Do NOT ask stupid questions in her class, she will shut you down. If you took the business math and not Math1200 you will have to work a little harder.
No passion and feels as though lecture being taught by a robot
Pretty plain and straightforward; in good and bad ways
1. boring 2. difficult on exam, class midterm average is 40%!!!!!!!
I've barely gone to class all semester, and just make a point of reading the textbook for a couple hours a week. I got a 75 on the midterm. It's really quite manageable if you make a point of understanding the concepts and memorizing the equations.
Boring/dry lectures, extremely hard midterm (40% class average), Textbook material and lecture examples do not relate. Looked for a tutor for this course and everyone who I contacted refused to touch this material.
Second time I've taken her class, wonderful prof. Go to class and take the notes she writes out. Had her for M&A and theory of finance, very knowledgable. Incredibly nice, the assignments are meant to help you study for the tests more than test your knowledge mid semester. Give Nancy a go, you'll love her
it was more of just talking on and on and not hands on enough and/or participatory
bower is an amazing teacher despite the course being extremely difficult. you must put in a lot of work if you want to do well. she is super rude when you ask questions and thats why i took off points.
Prof is brutal and is basically non-existent during the course. She wont give answers. She simply says see the assignment, although the instructions are vague at best. Be prepared to do everything on your own. This includes grading other people's assignments WITHOUT an answer key, therefore you lose marks because other people are wrong.
Super rude when you ask questions in class, seems annoyed whenever you ask for clarification and treats you like you've asked the most stupid question in the world.
Salty about a few marks she gave me
Took this for summer school. Feels like I took 3 courses when in reality I just have this one. Evidently a very heavy courseload.
Terrible prof. Do not take her courses. In class, attendance is mandatory. Online, the final is worth so much and a mandatory pass that the work all semester feels meaningless. She is a very nice person, but inconsistent with her level of understanding to certain situations. She doesn't teach, just summarizes what we are expected to learn ourselves
The lectures are interesting and very important for understanding of the course. If you go to the lectures and use the slides well, the course is very manageable. She seems like a hard prof, but the midterms and class assignments were very fair and for the assignment there was very detailed information.
Awful. Does not speak for students to understand.
Very dull lectures go at a rate that is almost impossible to follow. As if shes teaching content to people that already know the content... DO NOT ask a question, unless you want to feel terrible about it. I understand it must get repetitive for professors but at the same time they should understand that it is their job to hepl us learn the content
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. she gives you annoying quizs every week with VAGUE AT BEST instructions, nothing other than the text that isn't very good either, SUUUPPPERR DIFFICULT questions with no explanation and when you look at the answers she doesn't even include formulas + no office hours for help.
Bower is a good prof. Nancy provides great examples and goes at a good pace, you just have to attend the lecture. This course is crucial to a proper understanding of business and finance. If you can't put in the effort for this course do not expect to do well. People are so quick to judge the prof for their own lack of preparedness and effort.
Completely inaccessible both in and outside of class. Content is not bad, but the way she teaches the class makes it so hard to understand anything. Course load is so heavy. I basically put as much effort in this course as I put in other 4 together. She is arrogant and rude in class. Adomait level 10.0
Amazing prof who understands the subject matter she is teaching and explains it well with good examples
Bower does decent examples during lectures. That's about all she does, she has no regard for her students or their comprehension of the content. Often she wont even look up during class to the point kids just lower their hands and don't ask questions. She is very rude, will scream at you to put phone away even if taking pictures of notes.
Took this as a summer course and wow what a mistake that was, 2 weekly quizzes worth .5% each, each quiz took hours, other weekly tests or projects on top of that. Final exam was a nightmare no amount of teaching myself could have prepared me for that after an online class. Take with other professors and you'll save yourself time and stress.
Just give her salary she earns from this class to the textbook company because the only way to learn anything is outside of lectures. Horrible, boring teaching style and expects you to already know calculus when its not a pre requisite. Trust me do not take her class .
Nancy has a way with words. By that, I mean she gets up to her lecture podium and performs lectures in the style of "rap god" by Eminem. The textbook will be your best friend in this class, but the lectures are worth going to know what is up. The weekly quizzes come with a difficulty I cannot describe - they're essentially impossible.
Took the class during pandemic. 2 mobius assignments every week even during the times we have reports do which is biweekly and you also mark other peoples reports. Biweekly Quiz using lockdown.. everything is marked online, she doesnt teach.... Like what do you do aside from torturing students? Students legit teach each other, this prof aint it.
Because it was online it was a lot of self teaching. Although she provides some "commentary" and overexplains, the amount of things to go through and complete each week is a little unrealistic. Typically 3-5 graded pieces to do a week. She makes a point of making things harder than necessary. I have heard better things about any other ECON prof.
Nancy isn't as bad as everyone says she is. She does a good job making a relatively dull intro to finance class interesting. If you come to class every day, do all the mobius assignments, and hand in every project you should pass the class easily. I didn't even use the text, only studied using lec notes & mob questions. It's really not that bad!
I don't necessarily find her presentation style to be fun or engaging, but the material's interesting enough that classes go by super quickly. Tests are fair and the assignment's pretty cool if you like finance. I've skipped a bunch of classes but she posts notes so it's easy to stay caught up. Clear and direct, uses tons of examples in lectures.
Unreasonable and teaches as if students are not taking 4-5 other classes.
Unclear and not accommodated to online learning.
Not really doing things in DE class, just posting past notes and weekly agenda. Not worth the money
Worst Prof yet in my time at Guelph, not only does she not explain well or at all just flies through the lecture but she is RUDE when you ask question. Doesnt include more than half of the fomulas we need on the fomula sheet and laughed and said i made the fomula sheet a bit tricky for you guys Not Funny... Im not done the course yet :(
Wants you to fail. I dread walking into this class twice a week.
I took this course online and she would literally take days to respond to any question you had. I once posted a question regarding an assignment that was due in 3 days. She responded to my question 5 days later, and had clearly not even read it as she did not even answer the question that I had.
Wants you to fail, gives attitude to students who ask questions in class, hard to follow lessons, poor lecturer
Had her for Mergers and Acquisitions though the course should be called Solving Mysteries because assignments are based on content we barely cover. Worst prof at Guelph 100%. For lectures, she just reads the slides and it's unbelievably boring, I for sure fell asleep 2-3 times. She's lazy and unhelpful and won't lift a finger to help her students
Nancy Bower is definitely the worst professors I've had at the Guelph. Expects students to do well in the course, but berates them when they ask questions, and then doesn't even answer the questions. Never includes most of the formulas needed for the midterm. She laughed at the class when she said the class average was below a 50.
Nancy did not want to see students succeed and failed to make lectures understandable. Does not give answers to practice midterms and wouldn't tell us the midterm average because it was so low. When innocent students ask questions she does her best to make you feel bad for asking and barely even answers the question. Super disrespectful and mean!
Doesn't post answers to any of the practice midterms, and does not want to see you succeed in the course, and whatever you do don't ask her any questions. Corporate Finance, a great subject ruined by a disinterest professor.
worst professor I've had at Guelph. SO much content in very little time. Midterm was nothing like homework, do not take if you can avoid
Doesnt incldue 80% of the formulas on the formula sheet because "you should know them" when theres about 50 you need to know
The midterm and the final were so hard, 70% of the questions required formulas, and the formula sheet was useless as well.
A very hard professor that I would not suggest taking because she is just like Adomait. The midterms were extremely harder than expected with hard mobius assignments that take hours just to get a perfect score. Very rude as well when going to her office hours for help and speaks in rude manners and does not want to help one bit even.
Nancy has no idea what is going on 99% of the time. Anytime a question is asked, she freezes for 30 seconds and then continues on with whatever notes she has written down from 10 years ago. In terms of assignments, they are posted 2 days before they are due with no discussion on what is expected of you. The most disorganized class.
Worst prof ever in my 4 years. Doesn't provide you answers to the practice midterms, provides a formula sheet for the exam that's completely useless. Boring and you can barely hear her in class. Calls you out when you ask a question that she expects you to know. Think its time to hang it up!
By far the worst professor I have had in my experience at Guelph. Not willing to help, looks annoyed when you dont understand things, will yell at you in lectures if you have your phone out. Course is extremely outdated. intsead of teaching us on excel we are expected to do the math the "old fashioned way" when other schools programs all use Excel.
Stop the Nancy slander!! I had her in winter 2024 and I enjoyed her lectures so much I didn't miss a single one, even though they were at 8:30 am. Sure this course is hard to achieve a high mark in, but she did everything she needed to on her part to make it feasible.
She's not bad. I was scared initially taking this course but its an easy 70+ just read the textbook especially the later chapters for the final. Way better than Adomait.
Nancy isn't as bad as these reviews say, but she also isn't my favourite. My advice is attend every lecture (as they are extremely helpful) and do as well as you can on the assignments. I found the midterm/final similar to Adomait's, so no one usually did very well. Also, the tests are A LOT of concepts, so don't only study math or you'll do bad
Avoid Nancy if you can. Her lectures are extremely boring and hard to get through. Assignments are very long and difficult, assignment guides are provided but are complicated and take time to understand. Nancy spent no class time explaining her expectations for upcoming assignments. Nancy will point you out if you are seen on your phone in class.
She is terrible and the class is terrible. Worst class ever. I went to every lecture (which is rare for me) and I studied so much (which is also rare for me) and I still did not do good at all. I got a 32% on the midterm. I'd rather take econ*1050, econ*1100, and stat*2060 all again and do them in the same semester than ever take this class.
