Challenging class, if you do your work, show up every day and do the readings on time you will be fine. I really dont know how people that dont do the reading and show up make it. I got an A but there were a lot of C's and lower given on the tests.
The class is pretty involved, you really have to do the reading, and attend all the classes. Nancy is very helpful, and she's a very pleasant person.
If you thought there was a lot to remember in her BI 101 class then just wait until BI 234! Seriously. If you put in the effort however, you will do well. She was helpful and clear as to what was expected. Her genuine interest in microbiology made it fun
Mrs. Briggs was a great teacher and is a pretty easy grader as long as you give her what she asks for (she is very clear on what that is). This class needs a lot of time, though, and you have to read the text and show up to class.
Nancy is a good teacher but she is very hard to understand at times. She thinks that she is conveying something clearly but she's really not and she leaves her class confused. If you really want to do well in her class, skip the lecture and just read the textbook really well!
She has good intentions, but lacks the teaching experience and ability to deliver. Even if you attend all the lectures, keep up on the readings, and study, you'll find exam questions from who knows where. Way too much work in this class. She doesn't like to give an "A" even when you earn it. Beware!
How can someone so unintelligent make others feel that way about themselves? I feel stupider for being her student. I can read the text before class and feel comfortable with the material, but as soon as I listen to her lecture I become thoroughly confused. I can't believe she's allowed to teach.
She is a great person, but a horrible teacher! I studied a lot for her class and still did bad. She does not cover all of the material for the test and somehow makes you feel really stupid and confused! If I could give anyone advise, I would say do not take her.... she is truely a bad teacher!
Worst teacher I had ever had!!!!!! Switch teachers if you have her!!!!!
She is the worst prof I have ever had and would recommend anyone that is enrolled in her class to run like the wind (or just enroll in another class). We called it Nancy Brigg's Hell. She was completely unprepared in both lecture and lab and her tests were impossible to follow.
As the latest commentary, I must stand up in her defense. Her tests are straightforward and fair. She knows her stuff and researches an answer for you if she doesn't have it. I like her and I'd take her again if I had the chance. Maybe some of the previous comments were made by students who forgot it was a Micro class? Supposed to be hard remember.
I found her lecture exams very difficult and I didn't like that every question was worth 3 points. Her weekly quizes however were for the most part pretty easy. Lecture was hard to follow. She's nice but I wouldn't take her again. If you do plan on taking her plan on lots and lots of study time.
Mrs. Briggs is a great teacher. She was very difficult but if you kept up with the studying you will do well. After taking her class I was very interested in Microbiology. She made learning fun.
She is the worst teacher in the history of the United States!!! If you take her class, you will just sit there and daydream the whole time. SHe is boring, stupid and if you fail one test, you can't pass the class. DEAR GOD, DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!
I worked hard and got an A. Anyone can. If you're complaining its because you're a bad student, not because she's a bad teacher. Yes the class is hard, because it is Microbiology not because she's a bad teacher. I liked her and would take her again.
I am lucky enough to only have her for lab... but I feel SOOO sorry for anyone that has this woman for lecture. She makes no sense in explaining things that should be fairly easy! She talks to you like you are 5, and acts like the class is stupid. My mind wanders trying to listen cuz it takes her so long to explain the simplist things.
I don't think that this is her favorite subject to teach. I think that it is below her. She comes across as very flustered while trying to teach. Like we are all dumb if we don't know what she is talking about. Nice person, not so good at teaching General Biology.
WORST TEACHER EVER! She seems to hate the topic (like it's beneath her), grades unfairly, doesn't even try to make it interesting, and just overall a bad teacher. You will be tested every week with good chance of trick questions. Exams are fairly average but she won't curve it no matter how bad the class average. Take shannon kesley instead
a very good teacher! easy to understand and works well with us. tests can be hard but if you acaully study you will do fine. i would recommend her if you want quality teaching.
I have taken 101b, and 234 Micro from Nancy, and I love her! She loves Microbiology, and she wants you to love it to. If you don't like science, then that is probably why you won't like the class. Her tests are taken from her lecture and the book, so if you study you will do well. I would highly recommend her.
Lecture and lab don't correspond!? hmm... I thought that's how it works for college level science classes. Oh that's right it does just not @ Sylvania campus. Take biology classes @ RC, it's worth the drive.
Explains things in a way that everyone can relate to.
Nice woman, and is really enthusiastic about Microbiology. I would concentrate on her lecture notes, not the book. The amount of information can be overwhelming at times but overall it's an interesting class so that helps.
Nice woman. Very possitive but very difficult exam questions. Lots of material to learn.
Very nice lady. Difficult class if you haven't had any science classes recently. Study the text book!!! It will help, her quiz and exam questions are confusing and difficult. I would not recommend her if lecture is not your primary way of learning. Very heavy on lecture. Attend all classes even though attendance is not mandatory, it helps w/exams.
Her lecture is general, but her testing is very specific. The exam questions are unclear and confusing at times. The suggested course objectives are time consuming, and cover about 85% of what's on the test. Keep her in mind as a lab teacher, but if visual learning is your thing find another professor to take the lecture with.
Likes to draw picutures that are all over the place. Not very agressive to get the info out to students. Is respectful though.
Nancy is a wonderful teacher. She is clear in her expectations and testing methods, gives you what you need to know in class. Very helpful when you have questions. Provides outlines from her own notes and chapter objectives, which are very helpful for exams. I highly recommend her!
Fair, encouraging, upbeat. Great list of online resources. Welcomes interaction and questions. Tests seem to test knowledge, not meant to be tricky. Expects a lot, which is good if you're prepping for A&P 'cause it's only going to get more intense, right? Highly recommended. Charming.
I had a somewhat negative experience with this class. The quizzes are tricky, but the tests were better. It felt too much of a teacher-child relationship with the students being the children. If you want a better Microbiology experience, I would recommend taking it with other teachers.
Professor Briggs is very helpful in lab. She is glad to answer questions. In lecture she will go over material that is hard to understand. I think she is a great teacher and is very knowledgeable. The quizes are challenging but exam questions are little easier. She offers extra credit which is great.
This professor is reasonable and devoted to Biology, though she seems to see students as children rather than college-aged adults. Her tests are reasonably difficult, but she does her best to make things easier for people by going over things. Overall, a decent teacher.
She is very helpful if you need help after class. She is a pretty tough grader. The lecture is pretty straight foward. I have had a mostly positive experience in her class.
I took this class recently, and had her for both lecture and lab. Too many quizzes/lab tests. The biggest problem were the long lectures which were extremely boring and played out like taking fast dictation as she read out long sentences quickly and everybody tried to fill the information in on their study guides without really learning.
I found Professor Briggs to be tough, but very fair and very clear. She explained what was necessary to know, and explained it well. I would take her again. So far, I'm getting an A, but it's only mid term! :)
Very clear in her lectures. She is organized. Tests are challenging but she tests on what she lectures so take good notes. Is willing to help if you go see her. You will learn what you need to know.
Lectures are extremely boring and frustrating. Powerpoints are confusing and poorly worded, confuse confusing information. Could be a fascinating class but level of detail becomes overwhelming and uselessly in-depth. Does not teach. Not recommended.
very bland,dry teaching style
Professor Briggs is not the most helpful teacher, reads off of the slides, which makes it almost pointless to even come to class. She will honestly answer questions with "I don't know" instead of "Let me find out and get back to you". If biology is a struggle for you, I don't recommend her as a teacher.
I am shocked at the previous comments. I find Nancy Briggs very clear in her lectures, great at clarifing and relating information to real life situations and more than accessible for help. She is kind and patient to all students, beyond what would be necessary. Her tests are tough but fair. You have to know the material not just memorize it.
I find Nancy's teaching style to be quite accommodating. The material is tough, but she is always available to answer questions and has stayed after class numerous times to help me and my classmates nail down a concept. I would take her class again for sure.
Nancy is a very dry lady. She is very knowledgable in biology, but not a very bright person overall and her analogies make little sense. She is monotone and hard to follow and occasionally makes you feel awkward for asking questions she assumes you should know. It is possilbe to succeed with Nancy, but you have to rely on yourself more than her.
Reads from her power points. Adds very little additional material to her lectures. Her analogies seem directed to grade school students. She really doesn't teach much, so much as she reads to class.
She was a great teacher. At first every feels overwhelming but after a week things start cooling off. Attendance is not mandatory but if you want to pass you should attend the class. Her Cell paper and Genetics Paper homework is not hard. She doesn't give homework only the two papers. Otherwise study and read the chapters before and after class.
Boring classroom!
I really enjoyed Nancy's class. The two homework assignment where very easy and her test are staight forward. It is important to study outside of class if you want an A
I only have Prof. Briggs as a lab instructor (another teacher for lecture) but I think she's great. She is clearly very smart and knows the subject backward and forward. She has been pretty patient and helpful with me, esp. w/the microscope. She is businesslike but her sense of humor bubbles up sometimes, too. Her quizzes are completely fair.
Great teacher! Read the chapters before class and read thru her power points and questions she writes for every chapter. She covers everything very well that will be on the quizes. Easy to get an A if you use all the tools given.
I am amazed that Nancy Briggs is allowed employment by the college. This woman DOES NOT teach. She constructs a power point presentation from the book and just reads from it. (Its like a cliff notes version of Biology). If you already know Biology, and you read your book and comprehend it, you will do good in this class. I do not recommend her.
The instructor speaks in a monotone, shows the chaper on power point
She's not really a teacher. More like a body who can read a powerpoint. If you like to figure things out on your own she'll be great for you. If you like a professor who can explain the course content, relate the content to life, or who can tell you anything more than whats on the powerpoint. Then you might want to look for someone else.
SHe is a very clear and understanding teacher! ... She makes biology fun and funny. She uses power points alot, which I think is really helpful! She was always willing to help and will answer all questions by email really fast! I would recomend her to anyone taking cell biology! I wish she would teach the anatomy sequence
I had Nancy for BI 112 and the dreaded microbiology. I really like her as a teacher. She is very laid back and is a wealth of information. She is actually a microbiologist and writes our lab manuals. If you read the chapters and know all the questions on her chapter study guides that she hands out, you will do very well in her class.
This teacher does not inspire her students and in the class that I attended was very obviously annoyed when the class asked questions. She will indicate to utilize the study guide for tests and then the test and study guide do not correlate. I expected this class to be hard, I did not expect to have to retake to keep my 4.0.
I've had Nancy for both BI112 and BI234. She is a fantastic microbiology instructor. She is a microbiologist and loves her stuff. She was always willing to help anyone in our lab and lecture.
I was completely brand new to Biology returning to school after 25 years. The class was very hard and time comsuming. Nancy was absolutely wonderful. She was always willing to help me and available anytime I needed. I would highly recommend her as a teacher. I plan to take her for micro.
Terrible experience! She got annoyed when I asked questions and would direct me to read the manual. I'm so glad I only had her for lab and not for lecture. She has a real attitude if you come in unfamiliar with the subject.
Nancy was a good teacher, but not the most engaging or interactive with the class as a whole. I spent about two hours a day studying the book, lecture notes and study guide outside of class and found her quizzes to be a good reflection of the tests. Any time I wanted help outside of class, she was willing to meet me or review homework
UGH!!! NEVER EVER AGAIN will I take this instructor. She was unfamiliar with the terminology in the book (admitted it in class)! Also, she essentially regurgitated the book instead of breaking down the more difficult terminology and concepts. Study guide material was NOT on the tests. One of the worst instructors ever
Had her for lab. She's great. Show interest, make an effort and she'll do the same.
Amazing! She knows her stuff, is great at lecturing in a clear and concise manner. She does expect you to know what you're doing in lab, however, the instructions are written in the manual and extremely easy to follow. I would take her again if she taught more Micro! Great experience.
Great Teacher. the class was hard but that was due the crazy amount of content and expected detail knowledge. She was able to structure it very well and broke it down so its easy to understand. Very knowledgable, her quizzes and homework prepare you well for the exam. she also provides practice exams and animations to help with the topics
Nancy really wants here students to learn. She isnt super exciting in class but I think she is a great teacher.
I think she is great! I have not received my final grade yet but expect to get a high A. If you attend lecture, use her study guide and actually study, you will be pleased with your grade. She is not ambiguous about what you need to know for the exams/quizzes. Being present (physically and mentally) at lecture will go far.
She gives out really good reviews for quizzes and tests. If you don't understand something she'll stop and explain it or give examples until you get it. She knows what she's talking about. Nice lady.
Nancy is a great teacher, if not a little sleep inducing. Just do the work and you can't go wrong. She's flexible but not a pushover.
She doesn't give clear directions on the assignments that she gives out and she doesnt give an appropriate amount of time to complete the assignments. She doesn't follow disability accommodations. She talks so fast & gets upset when asked to repeat herself. She is an awful teacher!
Nancy can be very sleep inducing, and she's so knowledgeable that she speaks swiftly. However, she's not opposed to repeating herself however many times nescessary to get her point across and provide videos to back up her lecture
maybe it wasn't all Nancy. I was bored to tears with BIO in general but it was taking this course that influenced me to switch my entire career path altogether. Wasn't happy about it. But the material was horribly explained and very confusing. Her presentations were much too speedy as well.
Nancy is nice and all, but she is not the most helpful of instructors. She kind of does the whole, "what do you think" tactic when it comes to answering questions which is not helpful to me. Lab practicals were harder than needed to be. The material was interesting but not much extra credit offered when compared to A &P. Not graded on a curve.
Nancy is an extremely harsh grader. I struggle a little more with biology and I felt like she raced through all the lecture information as if she expected me to already know what she was talking about. She dearly wants her students to be successful, but I believe her approach to teaching is all wrong and too fast-paced.
She is rude and grades hard yet doesn't cover the material
OK. I was not going to rate her since I got an A in her micro class, but since she was a bee the whole term, I had to. Do yourself a favor a find another teacher. I beg you. Or don't, and have her get under your skin. And you can't do anything about it for a whole term. Then you'll have a story to tell. Up to you. You will go through hell for an A.
Nancy loves teaching Micro, and it's obvious. There's so much to learn, but she's confident you can and expects you to do. A lot of work for an A, but the information is interesting, mainly because she so clearly teaches it, explains it, and applies it to your life. If you have to take Microbiology, take it with her. Expect to work hard.
You people think Nancy is boring? I felt she was calm and collected and knew her stuff. If its the material you find boring you should probably be in a different field. Biology is difficult and you have to work very hard for an A. The homework assignments are easy and as long as you put in the time they will pad your grade. Test are hard but fair.
Nancy is a gem! She's funny in a very quirky way. Don't take Nancy if you are not willing to do the work. She lectures the whole class, but tries to make the information relatable and enjoyable. You have barely any homework ever besides studying for the upcoming quiz or test.
Nancy was a great instructor. Her lectures were interesting and clear. Labs were fun and she kept things interesting. My only complaint was that her homework assignments were graded harder than they should have been. Always add more to your assignments than you think is necessary. I got B's on the HW when I put A effort into them.
I DONT RECOMMEND HER AT ALL. This is the class that frustrates me the most. Chemistry is easier than this class. She is super monotone and reads off the powerpoint word for word. Says " Uhm" a lot making me believe that she doesn't really know the content. I don't get why she was hired as a college professor. I'd recommend to just read the txtbook
Nancy is such a sweet lady and I think she has the best intentions, but she is not a great teacher. I had her for lecture and I cannot follow because of how slow, quiet, and unknowledgeable she is. Don't take a class with her unless you're taking no other classes, thats the only way I can imagine you will pass it. I taught myself the information.
I had Nancy for Bio112 and I found that she was pretty great! Here lectures are sometimes a little rambling, and she likes to tell personal stories as examples, but I could still follow the material! Shes very sweet and quirky, and will absolutely work with you to get your grade up, but that doesnt mean its an easy class!
ALL SHE TEACHES IS HARD. GREAT, IT SHOULD BE. NANCY MAKES ME FEEL LIKE IM LEARNING FROM AN UNDENIABLY WELL INFORMED AND LIFE APPLICABLE HUMAN. SHE MAY BE INTIMIDATING AT TIMES, GOOD! If you're someone who realizes growth creates progress, no matter WHAT; It would behoove you to take consecutive classes with briggs, hard to find devotion at U level
Quizzes on each chapter (usually grouped 2-3 chapters) and 3 total exams (final exam not cumulative) 3 larger HW assignments, and while its extremely hard to get 100%, if you follow directions you can get an A on them. The quizzes and exams are scantron, and some questions are kinda tricky... read CAREFULLY. the slides are what you need to learn
She doesnt teach you, she talks at you. Shes awful at explaining concepts and leaves you to teach yourself from the textbook. your whole grade pretty much rides on three tests and the lab. Do yourself a favor and take it with someone else, anyone else.
Nancy Briggs is a biologist first and a professor second. She is a very tough grader and hardly teaches you at all. Her lectures are very dry and leaves you with almost nothing- so much so that you have to go home and teach yourself out of the textbook. I would not recommend this professor at all.
I had heard mixed reviews about Nancy but overall, I really enjoyed her class. I am a fan of the traditional lecture format which made me like this class. If youre not, you may not enjoy her style. She gave very little homework throughout the term, which was nice. I missed a few lectures and still did well in the class.
When I took this class I regretted it so badly. All she does in class is go over power points, pretty much reading from the screen. It was hard to follow her since she wasn't very interactive and rambles. Not very helpful when you're struggling. 2/10 would not take again.
I took Nancy for Bio 112 and Bio 234. She is a really great teacher and will go above and beyond for you if you are trying and showing up for class. She really loves the subject that she teaches and you can tell! I would recommend her.
Her lectures are only of pictures from the textbook never containing words, She has no motivation to teach. if you take her be prepared to teach yourself the topics by reading the book, the only reason I passed this class is because I read the textbook on my own time, going to lecture is pointless but you have to go to take quizzes during class.
This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Fortunately, I find the subject matter fascinating. You really have to teach yourself the material. Lectures are fine; they worked for me because I like traditional lecture format. However, I found the professor to be not very caring and a bit rude at times. Could have been a better experience.
Briggs was very clear from the start as to what was to be expected for the term. I feel like she communicated clearly and provided a informative lecture. She does move rather fast, so having your textbook out to follow along is helpful. Also, her exam reviews only cover about half of what will be on the exam, so studying outside of that is needed
I really enjoyed taking her class this term. She gave a lot of good insight to cell biology. She definitely knows her stuff. I will say read everything and the in-between stuff for studying. The material study guides help, but it's better to take your own notes. If you miss class, you'll miss something important. I would take her again.
If you're not doing so well in her class, but you're trying, she will ignore you or just not help you out. She talks really fast and rarely repeats herself. The slides she uses are just images from the book and she briefly explains them. She moves on very quickly so you have to write EXTREMELY fast or you wont get what she says.
Briggs doesnt seem to care or have any enthusiasm or passion while "teaching". She reads dryly word-for-word from Powerpoints that are available on D2L, so there is no reason to attend lecture. She is snarky and condescending to students especially if they dare ask her questions for clarification. I taught myself from the book. Avoid this professor
