One of those professors that believes that a "C" is an amazing grade. Very unclear in explaining the assignment. Does not allow any other interpretations of articles than her own. However, would not give us an exam review telling us what those interpretations are to help up study for the exam, no matter how many times people asked. Beware!

THE worst class offered at Brock.
I found her class very interesting but I also found that she marked really hard.
not one single thing about this course and prof were good.
expects a lot from students and challenges them in a cruel way.
Expects alot but is lenient on deadlines and really interacts with students in seiminar... Go see her when you need help, don't be afraid tio approach her, follow her instructions, ask lots of questions and you will get a GOOD grade which with her usually is 75+
This woman likes pain, especially when she is inflicting it upon others. You want to learn about gender or methods? buy a book and read it on your own. You're better off.
not a good class
Very great professor. She is very intelligent. She is a hard marker but I loved attending her lectures because I gained so much knowledge from this course. Opened my eyes to new materials.
Worst prof @ Brock. She gave me a C on my first essay, which for me was an unusual mark. I went to her for some help to improve on the next one, her advice was "REREAD THE INSTRUCTIONS". Thanks! So helpful! Dropped it right after that . Stay clear, she's horrible !
best prof ever. so clear in her lectures, slides work as a good outline but listen to what she says. She builds an argument every lecture. Very organized but you do need to pay attention and know your stuff. her lectures outline the arguments you'll need for a test and use readings as examples
Nancy Cook is my favourite prof at Brock. Although her lectures may be more challenging, she is a great lecturer and I truly learn a great deal in her classes. She is always willing to help out students and she is an amazing intellectual. I try to take all the courses I can with her.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED HER LECTURES! She made me want to become a Sociologist. Shes briliant, I learned so much in this course and I never wanted to miss a single class! So sad the semester is over...
She thought very highly of herself, put people down, made the entire course focus on one concept- feminism. She made students feel useless and stupid- claimed she had to make the exam easy so we would pass- AWFUL!!
Avoid taking her classes. She never posts lecture notes and does not really answer questions much. She would tell you to ask other students for missed lecture notes and does not seem to care about the students. I regret taking her class.
Lecture material is interesting but Nancy Cook is by far the most unorganized professor I have had in my three years at Brock. Her tests consist of vague and overgeneralized questions. I will make sure not to take any of her classes in the future.
Really strict for a first year course in terms of expectations for the students. Good lectures, but she could be confusing in her expectations for tests and assignments.
Nancy is a really good lecturer and prof but expects way too much from students on tests and assignments when her instructions are confusing and doesn't clarify them. Assignments and tests are marked heavily. Whether you read the textbook or not its hard to see what she wants on tests. wouldnt recommend it
Nancy is a really good lecturer and prof but expects way too much from students on tests and assignments when her instructions are confusing and doesn't clarify them. She believes that students who get a high grade should be automatically lowered. I had my grade lowered 6% for no reason and she did not even read my paper. My paper which was graded by my TA offered no explanations to why or where I needed to improve. I would never take any of her courses again.
Amazing prof, wish I could have her lecture all my sociology classes. Exams are fairly difficult but she will not hesitate to help you. Just make sure to go to lecture and pay attention, sure her classes may be hard but it is university, respect that she's making you a hard passionate worker about the topics she teaches.
Nancy is an amazing professor. I went in a little worried from what I had read on this site and she turned out to be my best first year prof in first semester! She is funny, smart, and her passion for sociology is so evident in her teaching. She is patient and makes the subject SO interesting and made me want to continue in sociology! Love her
She makes sure that everyone succeeds and is trying to the best of their ability! Truly cares about her students and presents herself very well. Shes one of the nicest profs ever.
She's an amazing prof. Go to class, do your readings and you'll be fine. The amount of people who complain are ridiculous. She literally tells you what to study; if you just LISTEN to her in class you'll do fine in the course. She really cares about her students and is very passionate. Really good professor, just put effort and you'll see results.
She gives you a very good outline of what is on the test and is very knowledgeable about sociology but she will yell at students for writing down the slides when she's talking but then change the slides immediately after she's done talking which makes no sense. She did not make sociology enjoyable.
Loved Nancy! I loved my first year sociology class. If you attend lectures, seminars and keep up with your reading this class is a breeze! People complain about her slides not being posted, but it gets you in the habit of attending class and practice structuring notes. I recommend this first year class to those who are dedicated.
She often yelled at people for getting the slides down and for first years its really really hard not to do that? it takes at least a year of adjustment to not do that and she doesnt understand that. Her tests are DESIGNED for you to fail. "Sitting in the back you wont pass" yet i need accessibility. Awful Prof, yet a great person outside school
She yells for no reason and doesnt post lecture slides and complains about bad class averages
Complains a lot.
Terrible
This class is not hard at all, very easy, but Nancy is very hard to earn respect for. Nancy has the bad habit of snapping and yelling at students. She will yell at you and will try to make you feel bad. She does not post lecture notes and wants you to fail. She would rather feel like she has authority than see you do well. Rude and CONDESCENDING.
Nancy is very condescending. She is the type of prof that wants to see you fail, she has little interest in seeing students succeed. During my soci exam, I asked her a question and she blew me off and made me feel stupid for a very fair question that I was knowledgeable about. Yells a lot and wants to work against students rather than with them.
seems easy durning until you get the test results back. lots of textbook reading on top of articles. expensive textbook. large class no time for in depth learning. be careful with citation errors unlike many courses truly obvious mistaken errors will be flagged for plagiarism.
Worst prof ive had. When you ask her to explain an assignment she just tells you to read the outline because everything is there. She really enjoys yelling at people and making everyone feel bad about themselves. Blames the students for not doing well on tests or assignments when she doesn't explain anything.
SOCI 1F90 with Nancy is easy. It's not a hard class at all, nobody said it was. It's Nancy that is the problem. She could possibly be a lovely woman outside of class, but as a professor she wants to work against you, she is the type to take as many grades off as possible rather than give them. Easy, easy class, but Nancy is not ideal.
I really enjoyed having her as a prof. She is really passionate about sociology and it makes the lectures very interesting. She did get mad when she felt the class wasnt listening to her, but this is completely understandable. I will miss having her as a prof.
I attended every one of nancys classes. I believe the group of individuals in my class were unreasonably hard on her. She yelled about 2 times out of frustration seeing as the class was completely disrespectful EVERY week. Nancy is a smart woman who deserves the same respect as any male teacher and her demanding this respect does not make her bad.
She is the hardest grader. Just unreasonable and very passive aggressive.
This professor is very vague with what she expects of students, and is discouraging when it comes to students answering a question wrong.
THIS PROF. IS INFAMOUS. FOR BEING BAD. I swear to god she pulls her information out of nowhere and wants you to regurgitate the information she feeds you on exams and changes the criteria after the exam had happened. Transphobic against Trans Men. This course was discomfort as hell and it was because SHE RAN IT.
Nancy is a wonderful prof... she makes the lectures interesting and she speaks so passionately that it makes you enjoy the class even more. She is one of the smartest people I have ever met and also knows almost every student by name (which I have never had another prof do). Kudos to Nancy for her wonderful work, and can't wait to have her again.
I did not enjoy the lectures at all and I found Nancy to be very disrespectful towards her students. When a student would give a response to her questions in lecture, she would make them feel dumb. She gave hard tests and assignments. She did not motivate her students to WANT to do well in her class. She has an attitude and is unapproachable.
Extremely unprofessional. We tried to pack up 10 minutes early one day, which we are entitled to by Brock itself, and she freaked out. Accused us of disrespecting her, swore at us and cried. We were all in shock. Tough grader with poor feedback.
I was so excited to take this course but have been left extremely disappointed. No matter how hard you work, you will not receive the grades you deserve. The content of the course is interesting, however you will be left feeling discouraged and disappointed when you see your grades. I will never take another course with this prof.
I am pleasantly surprised at how well I am doing in her class. I have never identified as a great writer so receiving good feedback on essays and whatnot actually surprised me. But I owe this to her comprehensible and engaging lectures alongside my passion for the subject. I've written a few Emails and questions and she's answered them all clearly.
No matter how much effort put into the class and how many questions you ask her, you will not receive a good grade, an average 80% student and havent gotten above a 60% The feedback she provides does not contain any positive feedback. Overall super discouraging class and would not recommend this prof
Assignment material is never clear and contradicts herself multiple times in instructions so be prepared to re-read and ask questions. She is extremely unprofessional and when we were in lecture she said that she might as well be teaching a first year course in front of everyone. Tough grader and is just overall not a good professor would not rec.
One of the most challenging profs I have ever had. She seems like she does not want her students to succeed and thus puts on a challenging marking scheme. Has little to no communication with the students or TAs about assignment instructions. Definitely would not recommend
Be prepared for your mental well-being to decline if you take one of her classes. Straight-A students like myself did not succeed in her class. Her grading criteria are confusing. This was her first time teaching this course, so we were the guinea pigs, and it shows. If the entire class is doing poorly, maybe reconsider your "teaching" methods.
passionate during lectures. Take home exams but doesn't post lecture slides so get ready to multitask. obscene amount of reading for weekly article critiques, average 30 page articles for a 1 page review every week! very tough grader. friends and I are normally A students but have watched our averages nosedive with her class.
"Just because there's nothing on the screen doesn't mean you shouldn't be taking notes", it's pretty hard when you talk so fast. Very sweet woman but it's almost as if she feels superior by giving bad grades out. If you're trying to keep your programs average, don't take one of her courses. The weekly 'hand-ins' for seminar are time consuming.
Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't go good luck. she does not post lecture slides and most of the important information isn't even on her slides but she says it so you have to hope you can catch it all. her grading criteria is super confusing and tough, and she expects way too much background knowledge out of students coming into the class
I'm normally an A student but my god Nancy tanked my average. she docked me like 30% on a paper because she didn't like the way I formatted my CITATIONS. Save yourself the stress.
worst proff ever. She hates her job.
Very disrespectful towards students. Doesn't post lecture slides because she thinks they're valuable enough to be sold to other students. Expects you to take notes of PowerPoint slides very quickly while also writing down everything she says which is impossible. Sets students up to fail. Fake nice.
very harsh prof, who has very high expectations for her students, and when students don't meet these expectations, she just blames them and doesn't take any accountability. Lectures are content heavy and very fast and she does not post slides, you also are expected to take down everything she is saying as well. she is fake nice and condescending.
Nancy is the worst professor I've ever had. She is straight up rude to students; she does not post her lectures so lectures are mandatory but that does not guarantee you will be able to write down everything as she talks too quickly. She gets mad at students for not writing down what she says but refuses to repeat it. She's on a BIG power trip.
I'm normally not one to do ratings, but I've had Nancy Cook twice now and have only had horrible experiences. She's condescending. Just had an assignment where almost the entire class failed. Clearly your instructions are not specific enough if the entire class fails an assignment worth 10% of our final grade. Would never willingly take her classes
She is part of several major courses in sociology so watch out. Her grading is harsh and if you do not follow instructions, you will easily receive a 0 and there are no marks for "doing the work". Her lectures are important to participate in because there are no slides posted.
There are not enough words in the English language to truly explain how inconsiderate and condescending Nancy is as a professor. Her communication with students is poor, unprofessional and she lashes out for absolutely no reason. She does not want her students to succeed and fails them for no valid reason. Unapproachable and unethical. DO NOT TAKE!
Nancy provides lots of information in lecture, it can be good for understanding concepts but also difficult to keep up with and record all of the information. She is nice, but with her grading criteria and unrealistically high expectations for students, I would advise students to avoid this class at all costs.
She reported me to the dean for plagiarism on my FIRST ESSAY in my FIRST SEM in my FIRST YEAR of uni. Clearly no plagiarism was intentional, i was never taught MLA and it was my first university essay so i did it incorrectly. I got a 0% and had to meet with the dean to plead my case. IT WAS A HORRIFIC WAY TO START MY FIRST YEAR. run. run far away.
Nancy Cook is my roman empire. She reminded me what hell is like. You will fail her class and she does not care about your success at all. I think of her the mean girls scene when regina writes in her burn book. This paragraph is my burn book for Nancy Cook. Do not trust her - Regina George
I wish Nancy would read these and get insight on what she needs to change, but unfortunately you can tell she thrives off it. She is on an incredibly high power trip and likes to make students feel horrible about themselves. Her instructions are not clear at all, and when asking for clarification she just copy and pastes the instructions again. RUN
the biggest ***** you'll ever encounter
This professor does not accommodate the needs and abilities of a range of learners, nor do they work to eliminate unnecessary hurdles in the learning process. The teaching style is geared to a specific learner. As a disabled, chronically ill student I am already disadvantaged! Please do better.
I cannot express the amount of stress and anxiety that Nancy's class induces. Although I am not the perfect student, I have never in my life received such terrible grades. I DO NOT RECOMMEND taking her class if you can avoid it. She looks for where she can take marks away instead of where she can apply marks. BE AWARE!!!
This professor DOES NOT WANT her students to succeed. She gave me so much anxiety and mental stress. Extremely condescending and NEVER Understands the students situations. I highly recommend NOT TAKING any courses with her. She makes it impossible for you to pass the course. NO GRADING RUBRIC NO INSTRUCTIONS. She fails people out of spite.
she literally did not teach us a thing and blamed us for her incompetence. she made the exams so hard but didn't give us the proper resources
She only reads off slides, which she doesn't share, leaving us without study materials. Her grading feels unfair, and any questions are met with blame on students rather than support. It's like she's more focused on making us fail than actually teaching. I felt my time and money were wasted, and I'd recommend avoiding her class if possible.
difficult to understand content. She doesn't provide proper guidelines or review even when you ask her. She looks for specific words when grading but does not tell you this. when you ask her for help or ask her to be more clear, she lashes out and blames students (ie: mental health or to use better skills but does not give you these skills.
Take this course... only if you want to ruin any sanity or peace you have. Nancy is the worst professor you will ever. She should have never been able to get this position when she gets emotional, passive aggressive and types in all caps with exclamation marks over email when mad at students. (no real reason to be mad she's just manipulative).
The class is acc interesting and the lec material and readings given is pretty easy to understand throughout the course, HOWEVER, the prof marks so difficultly. If you have another TA for ur seminar, ur probably fine but if not, you're cooked. do not take this class even if you're a straight A student because it will bring your average down.
This professor is hands down the worst teacher I have ever had to endure, she is absolutely terrible at her job
The first day of seminars, our TA had a full briefing with us about how this professor is rated this poorly on rate my professor. The TA fully admitted that when she took the course, she hated it, and the professor. We were warned that Nancy is a hard grader, and boy did I underestimate that warning. Received a 50 on an essay. The WORST grade I got
She literally put a source section in one of her assignment instructions that literally says "Final Reference List" IN THE INSTRUCTIONS! Like every other assignment in any other class, you copy those citations and put them in your bibliography. With her, she makes a post saying we weren't supposed to do that! She gave us the wrong sources!! Lol.
The hardest grade I've ever had in my 15 years of school.
I don't know how shes a professor. I honestly don't. Our TA was telling us that she had improved this course over the years and that the rate my professor ratings are from past years of this class before it was improved. With the way she marks, it is impossible to get through this class. Brock seriously needs to do something about her
The only positive reviews about her on here are probably her writing them
The worst class I have ever taken in University and the lowest grade I have ever received in my life, Nancy and her TA's made it clear that on the first assignment, We should expect to do poorly. Does Nancy enjoy running a caste system based on exclusion rather than education?, it is disgusting and has no place in post secondary learning.
She makes this class unnecessarily difficult. The workload is unclear, and the grading is harsh. She doesn't explain concepts clearly and seems to take pride in making students struggle. If you're looking for a fair and supportive learning environment, do NOT take this course!
Nancy desperately needs a reality check! Failing students only to encourage them to do better next time is just wrong. These are students futures she is playing with. Someone needs to do something
I saw these rate my professor ratings before I had her, and to be honest I gave Nancy the benefit of the doubt. She is by far the worst professor I have ever had, and the worst teacher I have ever had. Her TAs warned us about her ratings on here, which is insane that they even had to do that. She grades us on things that are not in the instructions
Brock university needs to fix this class and get a better professor to teach it. I could literally replace her myself that's how bad she is
Nancy is not the only person you need to look out for in this class, the TAs are equally as brutal as Nancy. They seem to follow DIFFERENT rubrics, each TA is telling different seminars different information about assignments, and they seem to take pleasure in giving you a poor mark. Nancy should NOT be a teacher.
Very difficult to succeed in this course. She often is very standoffish saying “why are you not typing what I say is important” as if we are incapable of deciding what Info is pertinent. Very rude and grades hard. If you are not as passionate as her about the course it appears you suffer differential treatment. Often spiratic and all over the board
The TAs openly tell the class that they and the professor are aware of what people are saying on here about Nancy and the course and try to adjust the course accordingly. They are full of BS. The class average for our first assignment was in the 50s and everyone complained how hard the grading is. This course and the people running it are clueless.
THEY SAY THEY "UNDERSTAND US" WHEN WE COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW HARD THE GRADING IS BUT YET DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. FIX THIS DISASTER OF A COURSE AND FIRE EVERYONE THAT "TEACHES" IT.
When you go up to her and ask why she gave you such a terrible grade and ask her why half the things she marked you wrong weren't in the instructions she gets angry. She gets mad when students attempt to retaliate against her insane grading and teaching systems. It seems like Brock found her off Facebook Market place and hired her.
her and all of the TA's are equally bad. apparently all of the TA's were given separate rubrics to mark us on our first assignment. seems very weird and sketchy.
Department needs to investigate her teaching methods and her conduct with students.
Brutally nitpicky marker.
Nancy is a tough grader and expects a lot out of her students, but if you approach her respectfully she will offer assistance and guidance to students. Take advantage of her office hours and participate in class and you will be successful.
The grading in this class was by far the most inconsistent and subjective I have ever experienced. Weekly assignments were scrutinized beyond what seemed reasonable, not adhering to the rubric. The midterm was the lowest grade I have ever received, despite my preparations/efforts.The subjectivity in grading made success in this course feel impossible.
This professor is without a doubt the worst professor known to man-kind. She is brutal, rude, and despite teaching her students about ethics, lacks them in almost every way possible. She responds to questions with an extreme lack of empathy, especially in extenuating circumstances and makes her TA's grade so difficult that they QUIT. DONT TAKE.
Nancy says that the reason the first assignment is “only” worth 10% is because everyone will do poorly. The TA told us that she thinks we should all sign a petition to get Nancy in trouble for causing such a negative learning environment, but was scared to say anything herself.. and now she quit. The course is clearly causing stress to the TAs too
The 5 star ratings on here are literally HER writing them. The TA's openly say that Nancy sees her reviews on rate my professor. Literally look at what the 5 star reviews say "Take advantage of her office hours" "Participate in Class" "Approach her respectfully". I guarantee you that a student is not saying "take advantage of her office hours" LOL.
Nancy is one of my favorite professors at Brock. She was so helpful everytime I asked about assignments so I recommend talking to her if you want to do well. Clearly she's willing to help students who try, want to learn, or who are personally struggling, but she won't tolerate people whining about grades. Plus her lectures are very interesting.
This is by far the worst course I have ever taken at Brock. This professor is extremely rude to students who ask for basic feedback and reasoning about their grades. Most of the grading that you get marked on is not even listed in the grading rubrics or instructions. Everything about her is absolutely terrible, and she should be investigated.
Our TA literally quit because she couldn't handle the terrible grading procedures given by Nancy. That should tell you something. I don't know how Nancy still has employment since she makes it impossible for students to succeed in her course. Unless you dedicate your life to quantitative research and love it to death, do not expect to do well.
Nancy Cook literally crashed out in our lecture!!! She left in the middle with no warning or reason. Nancy is rude and condescending and unwilling to help students succeed. Do not take her course unless you HAVE TO!!
while the content of the courses nancy teaches are interesting, she as a professor has little to no concern for the success of her students despite her attempts to make out that she does care. she would rather you fail over and over than provide assistance when it is asked for, and even then is condescending that u “arent at the right level”
nancy does not care at all about her students. even the TA's hate her and don't understand her grading schemes. if you don't write or think exactly what she wants you to, then she will mark you wrong. do NOT take this class unless you want to hate your life.
nancy continuously encourages reaching out to her for help, but then is extremely rude and condescending when you do it. i asked a simple question and she took days to respond only to be rude and completely shut down what i had asked because she doesn't think ‘second year students should be at this level'
TA was helpful, but grading was inconsistent/arbitrary. The professor ignored the rubric, and no effort seemed to matter. My midterm was my lowest grade ever, forcing me to drop the course, costing $600 and risking my scholarships. Despite Brock U's late enrollment policy, the professor denied me an extension for an assignment due before I joined.
While the content was interesting and the TA was helpful, the grading was the most inconsistent I've experienced. The professor ignored the rubric, marks felt arbitrary, and no effort seemed to make a difference. My midterm was my lowest grade ever, forcing me to drop the course, costing $600, and risking my scholarships.
Brock U allowed late enrollment within two weeks, yet the professor refused to grant me a one-night extension for an assignment due before I had even joined. She claimed she wouldn't let the university enroll students late in her class, despite it being an institutional policy. It felt unfair to be penalized for something beyond my control.
the only thing keeping me from dropping her class is the fact the drop date passed. she's extremely nitpicky, high strung, will not budge for student's requests to make their lives easier - the average on a recent exam of hers was 44%. she's ruining people's hopes and careers. she's a poor example of a professor. but unfortunately, she has tenure.
NANCY, we know you read these reviews. Please, for our sake and yours, don't be so demanding, rigid, stubborn, and stuck-up. Thank you
she's thrown tantrums, screamed at students, and worst of all, says she's "willing to help", and "able to accept feedback". if you can't handle a kid making a (justified) snide remark in the middle of lecture without TAKING IT OUT ON THE WHOLE CLASS, don't teach. actually, nancy just shouldn't teach at all
This Prof should not be teaching students, simple as that! I am a parent of a student who is questioning her career choice all because of Nancy! Prof's should be tough but belittle students, not provide constructive feedback & has hissy fits during a lecture is not a Prof who should be teaching at all! The feedback should tell you something!
This professor seems to take pleasure in watching students fail. It's almost like she enjoys seeing you struggle, only to make you pay to retake her class. You'll get the sense she's just waiting for you to fail so she can sit back and watch you waste more of your time and money. I would never recommend her to ANYONE. Terrible and unethical.
I had taken this course twice now and every assignment I have failed. I always reached out for help and asked, never got any. This professor enjoys failing her students and I never want to be in this class again! Get me out!
Trisha Hurst & Nancy Cook are an awful duo. My dad is a professor at Mac, and I tell him about the teaching methods Nancy and Trisha go by. He absolutely did not believe me and is now contacting some of his Brock professor friends to address this department and course. Hopefully we will get a new professor and staff for 3p02.
Cook has the worst teaching ethics I've ever seen during my 3 years at Brock. Her courses have drove me into a mental health crisis.
I have never struggled in a course the way I have struggled with this one. Even if you follow ALL of her instructions perfectly you will NOT do well. She hides her actual expectations in assignment instructions and the grading rubrics are genuinely useless. Hideous and spiteful prof. PLEASE RETIRE NANCY YOU ARE DERANGED AND UNFIT FOR YOUR POSITION.
Nancy's teaching ethics are awful and grading makes no sense. instructions are always unclear and rubrics are useless. I'm an above-average student and doing extremely poorly in her courses which makes no sense to me. She has also been neglectful of accommodations and does not properly accommodate her students who are registered with SAS.
starts the semester by telling your students they'll be lucky to get above a 60% grade. poor reflection of the prof, not the student. And it's a course centred around ethical research!! maybe review your own material nanc! I hope your daughter had a prof just like you that made her struggle with mental health, you forget we're someone's kids too.
She's under investigation. Thankfully my dad has been a professor for 18 years and was able to help me when I told him about the way Nancy runs her show. She is under investigation as we speak and apparently, Brock staff is reviewing her course and camera recordings of her lectures and offices. It's absolutely crazy but is necessary.
Cook is making the lives of students and TAs difficult through her inability to take criticism, lack of care towards how her students are performing in her course and impossible to meet grading schemes. She is the furthest thing from a professional and her actions go against everything an educator should strive to do.
The definition of intelligence is adapting and learning from mistakes/experiences and applying them to future experiences or skill requirements. Nancy has not adapted or applied her skills from what she knows about the Post-Covid education system. Students were compromised in HS, it's not our fault. Everyone has adapted except HER. BE ASHAMED NANCY
Bad professor bad TA
If you have an issue with Nancy Cook please contact the ombudsman at Brock and submit a complaint, it can be done over email or in person. The more people who come forward the better.
She is not good!
Hands down the worst teacher I've ever had in my life.
The TA's claim they understand why we are mad at Nancy, yet they do NOTHING about it. They are part of the problem if they refuse to speak to Nancy or get something done about this course. Change needs to happen and the TA's are contributing to Nancy's actions
she is mentally not ok
Trisha and Kaho are the equivalent of bystanders watching someone get harassed and choose to do nothing about it. They fully understand that Nancy is terrible, yet do nothing about it, and just let us suffer with grades. They have the power, not us. Bravo Trisha and Kaho!
Dr. Cook is fantastic. Someone clearly has a bone to pick. Ignore the same person rating over and over. Dr. Cook cares deeply about her students. She wants us to succeed. She is always available for consultation. If only my own mother were as saintly.
she writes her own reviews on here
Not enough characters available to explain how horrible she is as a professor. Don't ever email her unless willing to face belittlement. Midterm average was 44, which speaks for itself tbf. She is infamous at brock so beware. She has one of if not the worst rating at Brock for good reason, all of which summarize my experience with her perfectly.
This professor has no idea what she is doing or saying.
This professor is absolutely phenomenal! Just one of the best! April Fools.
Very dismissive and rude when emailing for any assistance. Acts as if all students are inadequate no matter how hard they try and how well they know the material. Even the TAs understand how difficult she is. Do not try to take a picture of a slide if you run out of time, she will stop the class to berate you. Specifically tells TAs to lower grades
Grades us on things that are not listed in the rubric. 100 bad reviews on here is absolutely insane and is a world record. Nancy for the win!!
Nancy prides herself in being disliked, as per many comments she's made about being a "tenured so we cant get rid of her". She is unprofessional and literally types in all caps with exclamation marks in her emails when she is frustrated over nothing. Not too sure how a professor who does not have patience still has a job. Master manipulator.
Nancy given the permission to teach is a serious problem. She is unethical, unprofessional, and some of the stunts she's pulled would get her in trouble if the board witnessed it. She needs to be under a serious investigation. I went to the chairman a while back.. yet nothing was done. There is power in numbers and her students need to unite.
Nancy Cook made me lose my scholarship after she decided to fail the entire class on an assignment and my average tanked. Regular A+ students, and students in general who all received a 40-50% on an assignment should raise major concerns. This is an ethical concern that the board needs to address. This woman should be fired immediately.
TA'S understand how horrible Nancy is as this is discussed in seminar behind closed doors. However, the thought of speaking up to her seems to terrify them. Nancy needs to be investigated and perhaps go through some psychiatric testing process. This is a serious matter - TA'S and students are being persecuted and tormented. Brock needs to act!
Everybody add this Snap account: reportingnancy. We will make a group chat with whoever is willing to form a group and go discuss to the dean or whoever is responsible for this department. We have power in numbers. Writing a review on here will not change anything sadly. We will go as a group to report her and get something done about this class.
This woman needs to go. So many students have issues in her class it's crazy. I never felt more helpless in a course my entire life as a student. I was a high 90s student in highschool, and when I got to uni I never got less than 75s. In this course you need to be Einstein to barely get a 80. I hope she gets fired so future students dont feel this
Makes a simple class way too difficult. Extremely difficult. A paper that would be a 70 will get you a 20 in her class. Be warned
I did not have a bad experience with Nancy at all. She was every engaging during lecture and was happy to reiterate important points if needed. She constantly emphasized her availability to us so we could meet with her for content clarification, help with assignments, or just to chat about the course. Overall, I had a good experience.
This prof should no longer be teaching at Brock or any school for that matter. In no way should a course be designed for students to fail yet that is nancys goal. If you are picking your courses and see nancy is the prof, just save yourself the stress and do not take her courses.
If you are in second year and have to take this course, considering switching program's. I hardly passed this course and my mental health declined to the point where I had to take a leave of absence from work. Nancy, you have caused a complete devastation of my mental health. If you can do good and choose not to, you're a bad human being.
The marking is also extremely biased and subjective. Me and my buddy literally completed every assignment together, reviewed everything, did everything together. One of us spoke in seminar and one of us didn't. The one who spoke in seminar got a better grade, when we literally did each others assignments. Trisha sucks, can't speak on Kaho though.
Unless you glaze the heck out of Nancy and submit to her like a puppy dog, you won't pass, no matter how hard you try. You're disabled and under SAS, she won't take you seriously. Be warned. Brock's reputation deserves to be tarnished for having professors like Nancy CROOK.
Nancy is one of the best profs I've had. I think the people complaining just want easy grades. She's a hard marker, but she's also fair. So if you don't put the work in, pay attention in lectures, or ask for help, you can't really complain when your grades suck. I've learned so much in all of her classes and found them really interesting.
Nancy is the worst professor I've ever had. She claims her marking is "fair", but most of the things we get marked wrong on assignments aren't even listed as instructions in her instructions for assignments. If you try to speak to her, she gets aggressive and always makes it seem like you as the student are in the wrong. I'm a 90s student and faild
This course was hard, but Nancy was so dedicated to helping in whatever way she could. I spoke with her about my mental health issues, and she was so supportive. I could tell she actually cared, and really wanted me to learn (not just pass). If you want to go into research, you'd be lucky to have her!!
Just to let everyone know, she is AWARE of her ratings on here. She is the one who is writing the 5 star reviews about herself. The TA's even told us. Do not listen to the 5 stars on here because it's HER.
As long as you keep up with the readings and lectures, you'll do fine. You can tell she loves teaching this class because her lectures were literally so good.
Probably one of the best profs we have left at Brock in this dept. If you want to do research, you should connect with Dr. Cook. She's passionate about it and was willing to talk to me about my research interests for over an hour outside of class once. She really cares and has so much experience.
SOCI 2P20 was one of my favorite classes I've so far! Nancy expects a lot but it was truly fascinating and she's a great professor. I felt like I was watching a Netflix special during lectures lol
Not a good professor. You can't even approach her without her being extremely rude and belittling you. I would not recommend her at all.
Extremely unprofessional professor and teaching assistants. First day of class we were warned about Nancy, and I under estimated the TA's warning. I failed this class due to being marked on things that were NOT stated in the rubric or instructions. Now I had to spend $700 out of my own pocket for a summer class. Thanks Nancy. If you cared, I'd pass
I had Nancy for 4P51 and then again in my grad program. She is a fantastic prof. I think people take issue w her because her communication is direct, and can come across as harsh, but it's really clear so you know exactly what she is looking for. She is kind/caring. If you're at Brock to actually learn, you'd probably appreciate her classes.
Nancy Cook was very strict. She bit people's heads off for taking pictures of the slides because she wouldn't post them. This class is extremely hard to study for without being allowed to record lectures, no textbook, and no slides posted. She forbid us from using our laptops in seminars, and the TA suggested we drop the course if we weren't happy.
