She is a great lecturer. Is straightfoward and very clear. Class is awesome and very interesting. I would highly recommend this class.

passionate, informed, straightforward. interesting, quirky personality; congenial, cultured, pleasant professor. speaks mandarin. good class, good music :)
Highly recommend this class.
AWESOM CLASS. AWESOME PROF.
great professor, makes class fun and flexible. interesting topics and great materials.
Her tests/quizzes are super easy as long as you do the reading because everything is very straight forward. She's the only teacher that made me think Peking Opera is interesting
She is kind of intimidating- very vocal about things that bother her. Taking notes in lecture is a must.
make sure you turn off your cell phone before going to her lectures
Makes things interesting. Straight foward. Has fun. Test are easy as long as you have read the material and listened to the songs (not much studying required).
Professor Guy is awesome. She is a strong female professional who is still funny and personable. She truly cares about the material and her students. Class isn't very hard either.
Fun class & fun professor. She's honest, helpful, and likes her job -- good stuff!
she's nice, yet oddly her TA's screwed me over on one of the mid terms. But it was an interesting class if you are into that stuff
wow他講講中文! Impressive professor.
i think this class is a joke (in a good way). either she's getting extremely lazy or this class is just getting easier compared to previous years..
I took her class every quarter for the past year, and got A+ for all classes. Very easy and interesting. Definitely GPA booster classes.
Could get personal at times, but she was very informative. She impressed me enough with her deep knowledge in Chinese language and music.
Awesome professor! She knows what she's talking about (talks TOO much sometimes) and is very funny and very nice. I didn't think music from Taiwan could be that interesting, but prof Guy made it a great subject to learn!
she rocks! she speaks fluent mandarin too.
Best teacher ever!
she tries to be funny, but sometimes it just comes out cold. she singles people out for stupid reasons sometimes. other than that the topics are interesting and i learned a lot about asian and oceania music. she is very knowledgable about chinese and taiwanese music. her lectures get kind of boring sometimes and very repetative. the TAs r cool
Def a gpa booster class.Tests not bad at all. Pro. Guy is truly caring about the students.Although a bit unstructured at times, her lectures were very clear and easy to understand.Take really good notes in class. The ta's were not too helpful, felt like they were learning it at the same time we were. Jason Ponce is hot though!
Prof. Guy is an awesome lady. Her lectures aren't too bad and all the reading is online so you don't have to spend money on a textbook. Tests come 99% from lecture, so it is important to go. Section was a waste for the most part. Don't take Jason, he might be okay to look at, but he is a horrible TA. Interesting class, not too difficult.
NOt a bad class to take. Prof Guy is funny and approachable. There's a no curve for the class since everyone does so well on the quizzes and midterm. No reading necessary for the midterms, everything is from lecture notes and listening. Highly recommended.
Ended up taking three classes tought by Prof. Guy. Very nice professor. Very approachable and helpful. Fun classes. Attending class is a must. Makes the midterms and finals much more easy. Most material on tests is material which was reviewed in class. Highly recommend this professor.
Readings are practically unnecessary; interesting and easy class. The TA (L. Lin), despite being a nice guy, dragged things out for way too long and was generally incompetent when it came to actually teaching. The grading on any written stuff is weird, but I heard that the other two TAs were far more clear and concise in explaining those items.
a very good professor... very into china and taiwan... tests are pretty easy, but you still have to study... she assigns reading, but dont really have to read it.... tests are mostly based on lecture so take good notes... listen to the music a couple times before a test
her test requires you to know everything!!
hsrd!!!!
Terrific teacher. I have a feeling the ppl on here who gave her a poor rating bombed the midterm and just don't like doing work.... Passionate about what she teaches. I recommend her so long as you're not afraid to study for a music class.
Nice teacher. Need to study for this class.
Prof. Guy is fairly nice, but this class isn't as easy as I thought it would be... expect the same amount of work as a History class
I don't know about the very first ratings about her but she is NOW really hard! Especially if you don't know Chinese/Taiwanese since she talks in it all the time and expects you to know it for the tests! She also goes off tangent all the time and loves to talk about herself. She even asks questions that she didn't go over in lecture! Worst teacher!
She's a horrible lecturer & for the things you need to know for the tests, she barely talks about (so those facts seem trivial to know but she put them on the test!)She talks more about herself than the actual topic. And her TA's that grade the essays can barely speak English and grade the papers ridiculously! Their comments don't make sense at all
Try not to take this class. This is ONLY a pretty easy A class if you understand Taiwanese/Chinese, which is not very fair to the other students. She tends to brag about herself a lot. She also tends to mumble when she lectures (because she often just reads straight from her papers) and goes off tangent many times.
She is very knowledgable about taiwan and taiwanese music. Attending class is a MUST. Makes the midterms and finals much more easy. She can be fun, but doesn't suffer fools, as some of her recent ratings seem to show.
This is not an easy A class. The professor is kind of strange/awkward. She does know a lot about Taiwan/Taiwanese music but she also tends to mix things up (which is not good for when you need to take the tests). She lectures horribly since it's hard to take notes because you don't really know what things you should concentrate on.
The lion's share of material she tests on, comes from lecture. I would agree with the recent posts; this class is not as easy as it may have originally been. A lot of what is tested on is written in languages other than english, so it is difficult to prepare for exams if one cannot understand Asian dialect. I did not find the class interesting.
She is a really great professor, she is very approachable and quite knowledgeable. The class focuses very heavily on China.
attending lecture is a must. makes it easy to take notes as long as you listen. shes really funny and i absolutely loved this class even though im not asian. i would recommend this to anyone especially because theres no book and youre never tested on the readings, only stuff from lectures. take this class, you wont be disappointed!
She assigns readings but you can usually make do in lectures without having read them (She knows nobody reads them :P) Just make sure you take good notes during lecture cos that's where all the test material comes from. Most of the time she gives ridiculously obvious hints as to what the essay questions will be on the test. It's a fun class :)
This professor is not clear in lecture. However, attendance at lectures is a must and watch out for questions on the test that ask for obscure details. I agree with the previous rating that said she was "strange/awkward". I wouldn't take her again.
AMAZING professor. that is if you are asian. She can really relate to you. Very interesting. Easy quizzes and hw assignments.
I Love this professor, she is so enthusiastic in her teachings!! :) always so into her lectures, I find her class very fun. She is nice, helpful, CLEAR! , and her midterm was not bad at all if you read, attend lectures, and use her study guide.
I took this senior seminar on opera and madness because I needed a 1 credit course & it fit my schedule. It turned out to be great! Prof Guy is NUTS about opera and now I am too! The class is fun and there's no serious work. Just go to class and fall in love with Lucia & other operatic mad women.
Her class was incredibly problematic. She made very offhand comments about genocide, incorporated her awkward personal stories into unrelated matters, and just didn't have very well put together lectures. I learned very little.
Very harsh in the beginning (I was literally scared to come to class), but by the end I couldn't wait to come & participate in discussions with her. Dr. Guy is clearly experienced & an expert in the field. I quickly learned this & trusted her when she said the assignments would be useful. Probably the most literate and educated professor I've had.
terrible teacher, i don't recommend taking her if you don't want to lower your GPA, unhelpful most of the time and is an egomaniac, be wary
Horrible teacher for CAT. Ridiculously difficult listening quiz where you have to memorize a million bird songs, whale songs, names and dates of musical compositions. Really close-minded. TA's were pretty bad too.
Horrible teacher for CAT writing class. Lectures have nothing to do with papers. Expects us to memorize different bird and whale songs among other sounds that have nothing to do with class. DO NOT TAKE.
She's kinda melancholic. Sometimes she's very nice and helpful, other times she's really mean and close-minded. She's very into her own interests (Taiwan and opera) and tries to bring them up even when it's not relevant. The class is not too hard, not too much reading. The essay prompts are broad and kinda confusing. Sometimes gives EC for lecture.
Honestly, the worst prof I have had my entire college life. She is so into her ownself and her studies that she expects the class to memorize ever stupid detail. She makes 30 % of your grade based of quizes that are from lecture and even though the entire class did poorly she wouldn't curvre because it was as she says our fault. NEVER TAKE HER
I understand that some students do not like Professor Guy because she is strict. However, I appreciate her stern attitude towards studying and heavy workload. This is balanced nicely with her humorous personality. Perhaps a criticism is that she is sometimes intimidating.
This professor graded based off of a short paper (4-5pgs), 2 "quizzes," cat events, and a final paper. What was stupid is that the 2 "quizzes" weigh more than the final paper. You'd think a writing course would be based off your writing...Horrible professor. Didn't learn anything. Shes very condescending and expects people to have musical knowledge
not as hard as other people said, the quizzes are doable if you use the notes from her lecture, i managed to get a decent grade
not as hard as other people said, the quizzes are doable if you use the notes from her lecture, i managed to get a decent grade.
Very interesting class. I definitely learned a great deal. Her lectures held my attention, and she usually explains the materials pretty well. Quizzes were very fact oriented, but fair.
Prof Guy is passionate about music, especially opera. She got us through 150 years of music history in one quarter which wasn't easy. I enjoyed going to lecture and am glad to have had a chance to write a music research paper. She walked us through the research and writing process.
She knows her material and wants her students to learn. I've learned a lot about Taiwan and music in general.
She is very interested in opera, and that interest spills out onto the students.
Despite the fact that I have no interest in Chinese Opera, I've actually really enjoyed this class and would definitely recommend it. It offers a great deal to learn about a different culture!
Extremely passionate and awesome professor! I entered the without the realization that it was going to be solely on Chinese Opera. Definitely not my favorite music form, but it was truly a good learning experience and Professor Guy present the material so that you always stay intrigued.
Prof Guy is very knowledgeable about Chinese opera (of course) and is also quite entertaining at times, referencing pop culture or making other slight tangents. She's definitely very strict about classroom etiquette (and not without reason).
I like music, but I wasn't expecting to get so into opera just from this class. Prof. Guy is really passionate & knowledgeable about the subject & her enthusiasm is contagious. There were only 3 quizzes but they aren't difficult, she explicitly states that she doesn't want them to be difficult. She's really just focused on students' learning
Fantastic instructor with a passion for her material. Even if the course material weren't interesting (which it is) Professor Guy alone is enough reason to take the course.
She is wonderful, I've never seen a professor that really loves their subject so much and it really makes the class so much more enjoyable. She tells fun stories and clearly explains the material so that you never feel left behind or confused (as long as you go to class). I went in not really liking opera but will now make the effort to go see one
There are readings but you don't have to do them. Just go to class and she'll tell you what will be on the exams. There were 3 quizzes and no final. The quizzes are easy if you review the listening list and just again, go to class and pay attention. She occasionally speaks Chinese which is funny because Chinese Internationals get surprised lol.
Professor Guy is an amazing teacher who is extremely passionate about Opera and truly cares about her students. She makes the class very enjoyable with various videos and personal stories.
I really like this opera course! It inspires me a lot on classical music! Her exams have many extra credit so do not worry, lecture is interesting (and I personally like the lecture's length) discussion is mandatory.
I was never interested in Chinese opera until now; I thought it was a strange art form. But since Professor Guy has incorporated the art along with Chinese history, I've come to appreciate it and what it stands for.
Knowledgable, awesome, and speaks Chinese!
Really great professor who is super passionate about opera. Large portion of grade were quizzes which weren't bad if you engaged in lecture. Didn't like or know much about opera coming in but this class made it aight coming out
Professor Guy is really passionate about what she's teaching and truly cares about her students.
She's so mean. She did not care about her students and her classes is SO boring. Def won't take her again.
She's really passionate about opera and also has a lot of interesting discussions with students in class. Overall the class was well-organized and had fair tests. Lecture atttendance is not mandatory but you really should go because a lot of the material in lecture could come up on quizzes.
Professor Guy is very passionate about the content of the course. The quizzes and content checks were very straightforward meaning you're already well prepared as a result of attending the lectures and discussions alone. A large portion of your grade are quizzes, but you'll be just fine as long as you stay up to date with the material.
lots of memorization of non-English contents if you are not Asian it could be tough for you there are essay questions on test the grading is not very lenient, but you still can get extra credits on exams. take this class for pnp(lots of people do) so it is easy. Discussion is mandatory. No video recordings of lecture.
Great professor who likes her subject and what she teaches. The lectures are very interesting, but she does not podcast them, so DO NOT SKIP THEM! If you skip the lectures, you will not pass. Also has a no-devices policy in class, but I don't think you have to follow it. Section is mandatory, and very useful, so don't skip. Enjoyed the class a lot!
The course was test-heavy, and so studying with flash cards, going over notes, etc. was the main work in the class. The professor is nice, and the content was mildly entertaining. Taken as a GE, but I found the course enjoyable, and the effort I put in I thought reflected the grade I received.
This class is boring and difficult. Her Lecture is unclear and she goes over the slides super fast. The slides are filled with words which you have to memorize. This class don't help you with any thing related to Opera, it helps you to learn how to memorize boring information and how to cope with unreasonable requests, like printing out papers.
The tests are on paper with listening, fill-in-the-blank, and matching. They're also tedious and some of the info I don't remember seeing in the lecture. Makes you attend an opera. Boring lectures, but you don't have to even attend them just study the slides. She's pretty funny though. Had to write two papers and print them out. Not the worst class
Please do not skip class on this on purpose and or often, despite everything being posted online afterwards. Important to show up to watch and listen to operas and hear Guy's commentary on it and usually what is being said will be referenced indirectly or directly on the quizzes. Easy to fail but even easier to walk out with an A. Listen and attend
SHE IS HORRIBLE
Worst music teacher.
Don't take, she expects to much from students when she doesn't even help with her lectures. The first midterm was fine, the second one was way much of history rather than music. For two weeks she doesn't even teach she posted videos that you can't even understand what the people say, and it was mostly history than music.
Clearly cares about students and is very interested in the material. I disagree with the other recent reviews, I think if you genuinely get interested in the material and take the time to learn it, the class is not too bad.
The class is super easy and enjoyable if you engage with the content. I would say, her TA's helped a lot for the quizzes so definitely go to discussion (it's mandatory), but everything was already talked about in lecture or canvas. The lectures can put you to sleep, but she is a nice professor who just wants you to learn.
Overall very passionate professor who cares about the material she is teaching. Lectures are not mandatory, but TA discussion sessions are. Course was more difficult than expected, with more memorisation of facts than actual music knowledge. Lots of reading, especially during the second half of the quarter when it's asynchronous lectures.
UCSD course description LIES it's entirely an East Asian music class which I wasn't expecting. Lectures not recorded, discussion mandatory, lectures are extra credit sometimes. Questions on tests are random sometimes and are just memorizing facts. Lectures were fine but slides were mildly bad and hard to study off of.
Professor Guy is v passionate & funny! Many questions are based on odd lecture-only/discussion-only/reading trivia, so I highly recc going to lecture(!!) & discussion, and noting EVERYTHING. If memorizing random facts is your thing, it'll be fun for you (I'm neurodivergent lol, but also I kept forgetting the weekly(ish) content checks). EC on tests
