Nancy is such a great teacher. Eng 101 can be scary but she is so understanding and has confidence in all her students. I have learned so much from her. She accepts late work and is not picky about things and grades easy. Her class is difficult but you will be grateful you had her as a teacher.
Nancy is AMAZING, you'll have to work hard but if you open your mind to new ideas then you'll go far. she cares so much about everyone of her students and is so nice. I love Nancy and my whole class cried on the last day of the semester, you can never get enough nancy time
Nancy is inspiring and passionate. She cares about what she is teaching so much. I walked in to 101 not really wanting to be there. Now it is my favorite class. She is very strict and expects a lot, but she will give you the tools to meet those high expectations.
nancy is by far one of the most dedicated, compassionate, caring and charismatic teachers i have ever had. this class along with her teaching styles was one of the best classes i've ever attended. the work can be struggling at times, but she is always there to help out as much as possible with as much as possible. keep on doing what you're doing.
Are you kidding me if ever teacher was like her. School life would be fun. I was so scared of this class. She asks a lot but she gives you what you need to get it done. Don't be scared she grades on improvement. great class
She was literally the best teacher I have ever had. The class discussions were fun instead of boring like most and I actually found them useful. I would 100 percent recommend her and I will plan to take her again in the near future!
This class has a difficult work load but was one of the most interesting and intriguing classes I have ever taken. She will teach you so much more than a normal teacher and you will be extremely engaged by her in class discussions
Really great teacher. She made me actually try and learn and want to be there. She is so talented and a great teacher.
DO NOT take her for Eng 102 unless you have lot of time on your hands!! She requires a 15 pg essay WITH 8 pg reflective essay & more than half the class ends up withdrawing - she even admits it. Even admits she assigns more than any Eng prof. at SPSCC. First rate my prof. I've done because she is the worst teacher I've ever had. You've been warned.
way too high of a work load.
Great teacher! I absolutely loved having Nancy as a teacher. I wish I could take more of her classes. It is a lot of work, but she makes it interesting. Just don't wait until the last minute to do something and you'll be fine.
Nancy is the best teacher I have had at SPSCC. Although her work load may be hard, the students lean a lot. The class is not filled with boring lectures but rather engaging discussions of philosophical texts. She is by far the best English teacher you will ever have. Ever. She even gave me the hope and skills to pursue a career in literature.
Nancy was an awesome teacher to have, and i really enjoyed my time in her class. She had weekly reading assignments from the book and online, and then would have a discussion online about those readings every week. For papers, I found her feedback quite helpful. If you can handle her occasional yelling-then-quiet to make a point, She's awesome.
Nancy is an English god. She has a published book and gives more good advice than any teacher I've ever had. Don't expect an easy A though, she definitely makes you work for it. All of her classes have a meaning, even though you may not understand them at first you will later.
Nancy is amazing. She is the best professor I have ever had by far. She is hard, and expects a lot. Her classes will push you beyond your previous limits, but you will grow, and if you let yourself you will have a blast.
It was a very challenging class but she pushed her students to become excellent readers and writers. People who cry about this class being too heavy of a load aren't willing to put in the effort that basic college classes require. I struggled and wanted to give up, but I put in what I knew would give me the grade I deserved.
Nancy Miller is one of the best instructors at South Puget Sound, if not the very best. She is tough, but so attentive to her students. If you love to read, you're going to love with this course, guaranteed. She will challenge you from the beginning to the very end, but even more so, she will inspire you. Seriously recommend.
Nancy Miller was very open to everyone's opinions in class. Though you will have a lot of reading to complete and analyze, she makes you feel as if you matter. This class was pivotal for me in my life and in general. Best professor I have ever had.
Nancy Miller, aside from being a phenomenal lecturer and a very responsive grader, is an extremely friendly person in general and I would recommend her to anyone taking any English class which she may be teaching. However, don't mistake her for being easy; she challenges you consistently to improve through out the writing process. A++ professor.
Nancy is amazing. So many students in this class are young and have very lacking backgrounds in writing. The grades are more on improvement than having a perfect paper. It's incredible how much better my and my classmates' papers become over the quarter. This is the only class I've taken here with any class discussion. Not just a sage on a stage.
One of the best professors at the school
The best professor I've had. She allows you to express your opinions freely and encourages you to express your beliefs in your writing. She's definitely not an easy professor, but I found that if you do the work, are honest in your papers, and choose relevant topics, you'll do fine. Highly recommended.
You will never regret taking Nancy's class. She is the best professor I have ever had. Usually I'm the type to encourage people to take easy classes, not really the case here. I wouldn't say the class is hard it just pushes you. Anyways... Take this class.
Nancy is an excellent teacher, I was in her English 101 and 102 class. She is very good at explaining the process of writing for beginning writers and always willing to help. The workload and grading are fair, in my opinion, and she gives a lot of good feedback on papers and discussions. Overall, I think she has been my favorite teacher so far.
Nancy is a wonderful instructor. Her English 101 class is probably the hardest and most rewarding class I've ever taken. Her personality is infectious. She will make you earn your grade from start to finish. Great feedback and I would take her class a thousand times over again.
she is good!!!
English 102 with Nancy was definitely one of my hardest classes. She makes you stretch your brain and analyze in ways you didn't even know were possible. I was quiet and didn't participate which ultimately was the reason for me not getting an A in the class- participation is important! This class was a lot of work, but is ultimately worth it.
Easily the best professor Ive ever had at SPSCC and even UW. She is inspiring, and extremely passionate. Her lectures are beautiful and engaging. Nancy reaches out to each student on a personal level, and grades based on what she expects from you. Just take a class from her, you wont regret it.
I actually took Nancy for Eng101 and Eng102 and she was the most inspirational professor I had and will most likely ever have.
Nancy was a great professor. I never really had any personal conversations with her but from her style of teaching and perspective on life, you are able to tell she is a wholesome person. Fair warning she is religiously democratic and grades attendance. This isn't the class for you if you skip a lot of class. Come to class with a open mind.
This English class opens your mind and changes your perspective on everything. Nancy is an oddball; the time you meet her is incredibly intimidating, I'm not going to lie. She is very good. She is a firecracker and loves critical thinkers that are genuine about learning. Come to class. Discussions every Thursday and I believe a total of 4 essays.
She is the best teacher I've taken. Heavily encourages critical thinking and doesn't discriminate if your views are different. Participation is very important, she grades on it. She is really fun, but weird. Intimidating at first. Grades on effort and critical thinking, technique isn't what she looks for. Never boring. Time consuming, not hard.
I took Nancy for English 101 solely based off a friend's recommendation. Turns out, it was a great decision! Nancy is very passionate about teaching and very unique. Her style is very unique! Be ready to dive deep into class conversations and papers in this class. This class was amazing I high recommend Nancy
I took Nancy mostly because she was the only English teacher with open seats. Little did I know what an awesome teacher she would be. She pushed me past my limits, and helped me to grow as a writer. She is kind of a harsh grader, but gives really solid feedback. She's also pretty funny, kind, and helpful. Definitely recommend her.
I took Nancy's Engl 101. It was to say the least a happy accident. She is an amazing teacher, and I do mean that. She is Liberal (I am a nationalist) and class discussions reflect that, but Nancy does not judge her students based on opinion. gives two weeks for make up work and is incredibly insightful and helpful. Amazing person, Wish her the best
Nancy is an amazing teacher, and a wonderful person. She has been though a lot in life, but she still shines like the Gold her Heart is made of! a bit intimidating at first, she is really quite kind, gentle, and funny. She will help you to actually improve your writing and understanding of English. Spscc should be paying her more. Thanks Nancy!!!!!
She was a pretty good instructor. Really out there though. I feel like being in an analytical writing course is hard because a lot of it is subjective. I received good feedback from tutors yet was graded poorly from her which is frustrating. I personally would not take her class again due to the grading.
One of my favorite teachers here. Intimidating at first, but SO kind and understanding of life circumstances. Definitely pushes you (academically and out of your comfort zone). Great classroom environment. Participation is VERY important. Gives a ton of really valuable feedback. I learned so much in her class and am taking her again for 102.
Oh Captain, my Captain... Nancy Miller is a wonderful person and a brilliant teacher. If you're looking for a class in which you can skate through with minimal thought and effort, look elsewhere. However if you do engage, you will get back tenfold what you put into her class. Having her as a teacher was a life-changing experience.
Being one of my first experiences with a college teacher, in my first college experience, I found Nancy to be just an absolute joy to have. Thought provoking weekly discussions, controversial topics that will really give you something to ruminate; 11/10, would take again, especially if I have an ENGL102.
Nancy has taught me so much over the course of three months. She motivates her students to go out of their comfort zone and talk about controversial subjects. Lots of discussions about issues going on in our world today. I would say she is very liberal and her topics throughout the quarter show that. Nancy cares about all of her students sucess.
Nancy is exceptionally dedicated to elevating the art of instruction to new heights. The way she structures this class is incredibly engaging. The assignments were challenging for me, but I enjoyed the work. Believe the hype: this class will help expand your writing skills and perspective beyond what you thought possible- get ready to grow.
Nancy was an amazing teacher! She makes you want to speak your mind in class. She does not lecture but has class discusions that are created from the students ideas. She is a very understanding, compassionate teacher. I plan on taking her 102 class.
Nancy is awesome and she truly cares! If you do the work, you'll become better writer! Homework is reading heavy but you get to edit papers in class. Nancy is a tough grader, most people drop her class after their first assignment. If you work hard, participate and meet with her, when needed, you will receive the grade you deserve!
She gives helpful feedback and ways to improve. There is a lot of reading for this class. There is a lot of reading for this class between the text book and the stories she requires for the discussions and essays. There are about three to four assignments due every week. Lots of 2-4 page assignments, essays are longer.
Nancy Miller is THE MOST INSPIRATIONAL TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! I've never vibed so hard with a teacher before. She listens and grades like you are her very own child, she really cares about you and how you can improve as a writer. Would 100% take a class with her again<3
Shes rude. I do not recommended taking a class with her.
This course challenged everything I knew. It changed me. There are two kinds of people, victims (fixed mindsets) and ones who are accountable (growth mindsets). The people writing negative comments are the victims, and they could change if they could get over themselves. Nancy gave 150% of herself every single day, and I wish it had been longer.
You are going to love this woman. It's only two weeks in, and this class has blown my mind. That's all I can say.
This review isn't for you English majors, I'm talking to the business and science majors. If you don't talk often in the class and just want to sit back and learn you will get your grade destroyed at the end of the quarter. If you have a logic based thought process and want a clear answer another teacher would suit you better.
Shes amazing. Gives good feedback, always willing to help. Make sure you show up to class on time though, you will fail if you dont. I only did the reading half the time and still got an A, but it makes the class discussions more difficult which she grades pretty hard. As long as youre not on your phone in class, youll get along with her.
Nancy was a great teacher. If youre thinking about taking this class just to get your English credit, then this class isnt for you. Shes incredibly thoughtful about her students opinions. She makes sure that everyone gets heard and is an excellent mediator for all our discussions. Yes, there is work, but dont procrastinate and youll be fine.
Completely overrated her class. She acted like it was going to change our lives. Very liberal and often annoying.
be ready to write it up in nancy's class
Nancy is very clear with her assignments, sends weekly emails and checks up on you. Also is open for extra personal appt. if you are struggling or have questions. Essays aren't really essays, they are lit. analysis and research papers... AWESOME. Unlike other teachers, she doesn't make you write 10-page papers. Disc.s are easy too.
While the reading in itself was not the most challenging choices she has used in the past, the ways Nancy helps guide classroom and small group conversations turn really deep very quickly. She expects true transparency from her students, and I quickly found myself wanting to give my all to her classroom.
Give Nancy a raise!!! She is hands down the best professor I have ever had!! Nancy makes you think outside the box and she awakes the inner writer in you. She promotes critical thinking and her class is amazing! Nancy is amazing! High recommend her! You can sense she really cares about her students success. FIVE STARS!!!!
She may seem harsh the first week, but if you do the work, and show up and participate, you should be able to get an A in the class. Nancy is otherwise a very nice lady that cares about you and will teach you how to do English, research, and write essays the right way. I enjoyed every minute of class, and you will, too. Would take a million times.
If you dont like talking in class, dont take this class. Nancy herself is a wonderful professor and you will grow tremendously in her class, but if you slack on any of the work at all it will tank your grade. A normal day consists of going over the weekly reading with a small/ large class discussion with the occasional workshop. 3 essays.
From the first day, it was clear I was in the hands of a professional. A passionate teacher, who turns papers and homework back quickly, with great feedback, and someone I wish I could take again and again. Inspirational, in more ways than one.
Nancy is an amazing teacher. You can definitely tells that she cares about her students and is not only trying to teach us how to write papers but how to examine the world around us. She is also very open about her liberal views and talks often about her life experiences which makes the class interesting. Also attendance is 25% OF THE FINAL GRADE.
Wonderful prof. Lots of discussion posts but nothing to hard. Papers can be strenuous if you have outside obligations but that's to be expected. I'm sure if you wanted to you could BS through this class so anyone can take it. However; I have heard some people say they struggled through so maybe my learning and her teaching style just meshed well.
Nancy is the GEM of the English department at SPSCC. She totally changed my views on college and writing. She really cares about her students and has the magic ability to make us care in return. Her classes are heavy on the reading, but as long as you do the work - you will pass. Take her twice, she teaches both 101 and 102, you won't be sorry!
I took Professor Miller for English 101 and I'm so glad I took it! She cares so much about her students and gives amazing feedback. Be prepared to read everything because it will benefit you a lot. She's not a hard grader, just make sure you put your best foot forward. I got a B- because of my part, not hers. If you can, take her class :))
The class includes several papers, but she lets you choose the topics and encourages you to explore things you are interested in. Lectures are great, really delves into the politics of the stories, and she encourages participation. Gives good feedback but must put effort into work.
You can expect to do a lot of reading. There were three papers to write, 2 three page essays and 1 seven page research paper. You could chose your topic. There are manditory discussions every week covering the topic of the week. I learned a lot in this class and throughly enjoyed it.
It's the same thing every week with no variation, and you don't get a break when you have a paper due. I was burnt out, and I love English. She's condescending/rude if you ask her about grades. I politely asked her about a grading issue ONCE and she told me I seemed "obsessed" with getting As. Pretty frustrated with her. Take a different prof.
Nancy Miller will make you suffer if you are not one of her favorites. She doesn't give much feedback and what little feedback she does give is vague and doesn't tell you anything. She is focused on giving A's only to those who are English Majors and that's it. Her grading is also incredibly nondetailed and so you just pray she likes you for grades
This is a tough class but even in an online environment, I learned quite a lot. She is a tough grader and has high expectations for all of her students, but gives really great feedback and offers you many opportunities to show your growth. There were 3 big papers throughout the quarter and the first two were both open to revisions.
She acted professional but talked really friendly. Her work and grading is based more on personal values than anything else. She switches between first and third person, if that bugs you don't take her. Honestly it was just hard for me to take her seriously. Work wasn't too much but she grades harsh on papers. "Nancy doesn't believe in tests."
Although Professor Miller gives a lot of homework, it really wasn't too hard. The stuff we read or watched was understandable and we used all the material throughout the quarter. As a running start student I was surprised by the topics we discussed, felt respected, and also thought my opinions mattered. If you wanna learn something take her class!
If you are really into English and writing. This IS the class for you. I don't dislike Nancy, but her teaching style just unfortunately didnt work for me. If you aren't as into writing like I am, I'd recommend finding a different professor. She makes you write 2-4 pages papers bi-weekly, and expects them to be perfect.
This professor gets negative reviews because she's the REAL DEAL! You will have tons of reading at times but Nancy lays everything out from day one. She grades you on your own progress and truly helps you grow as a writer! The tasks that seem difficult will help you in future papers. I recommend taking her class if you want more than just a grade!!
She gave me wonderful feedback on my efforts throughout the quarter. I love her way of being in class with students.
I took her online class and the readings and assignments she gave were fairly easy as long as you followed the directions. She genuinely cares how well we do in class and will check in on you if you aren't caught up.
Nancy Miller looks like a witch. Don't let that fool you though; She is a great teacher and I recommend her to anyone who wants to improve their writing skills. The workload is very heavy. She assigns a lengthy discussion post every week and there are multiple readings throughout the course. She grades tough, so make sure you do your best work.
I had this professor for English 101 and now English 102 currently and she is horrible. I have cried over her class many times, from the work load to her lack of empathy and she gives so much work. She says that she doesn't assign busy work but she most definitely does. She grades VERY tough, so don't make a single mistake or you'll get a 0.
-No teaching involved in class -reading and papers every week -stops reading papers if she gets "triggered" by points backed by evidence -does not care for all students -failed me on a passing grade in any other school system -unclear grading policy -again, no teaching involved ever, she just throws reading and assignments at you.
You have three papers, but plenty of time. Read short stories ahead of time. Lots of discussion and is always there to help.
An exceptional teacher. She truly cares about making you a better reader/writer/thinker.
Nancy Miller is probably one of the better English teachers that you could have. Although her grading is pretty strict when it comes to essays, she'll give you great feedback if you ask for it. She'll post weekly overviews which is super helpful and with the essays, she'll explain exactly what you need to do.
At first, I thought I would have issues because there was a lot of reading and writing every week, but Nancy was always ready to give feedback if asked. She was passionate about her class and read every essay. She was approachable, very nice and encouraged me to dig in and bring the hidden writer out. I would take her class again.
This instructor changed her grading standards midway through the quarter and assigned unclear assignments. Class time felt like a waste to me and would have been much better as an online class. She did not provide great feedback as it was all generalizations. Just don't do it.
There were a lot of creative, new activities including the writer's workshop that I will never forget, and I would say this was my best, favorite English course I ever had. But please don't take it if you want to earn an easy A. You need to commit your time and effort to enjoy this class.
Makes directions clear and gives thoughtful feedback to students. Class was thought provoking and helpful for the future.
This professor is really good at helping people achieve what they want to in their writing. Her lectures were enjoyable and very informational. I would recommend taking this class if you need a leg up in writing.
I had Nancy for English 101 and loved her class. I will say there is quite a bit of reading and at times it can get overwhelming if you leave things for last minute. She always you to see the whole curriculum which I would encourage you to work ahead it. She is very fast at grating papers and gives grate feedback and is very willing to help.
Nancy Miller has definitely been my favorite professor. She really changed my perspective on writing, and all the topics we explored were relevant and interesting. I really appreciated the writers' workshops and her very thorough feedback. All in all, she is a passionate professor who I definitely recommend if you're willing to put in the work.
Don't get me wrong, Nancy makes you read and reread, but the class discussions were amazing. She's an oddball in the best way. Once, she stood by the window watching the wind and decided to scrap our planned discussion to talk about the wind instead. It sounds weird, but, if you go with it and say whatever comes to mind, you can't fail.
I had Nancy in my first quarter at spscc. There is a heavy workload and her class talks about very political topics constantly. If you don't agree she will go hard on you. I was always a great student and somehow struggled in an English 101 class. For reference I got over 100% in my English 102, so clearly I was not the problem.
Nancy is a very kind person, but she does expect a lot from you. You will be writing and analyzing texts a LOT, and then you will take what you've analyzed into class discussions. I loved her class, but it is definitely a lot of work. Good for English majors.
one of the worst teachers ever. In all her videos, she looked extremely unprofessional. and never gave feedback, and when doing a discussion with the class, it had to be 3 pages long for a small discussion. Do not take her class!
I was a junior in high school when I took this course. Lots of reading and writing but if you stay on top of the weekly assignments you should be fine. The final is a paper that you have several weeks to work on.
The class is loaded with homework and she demands long texts/documents for all her assignments. Do not take if you are busy outside of school. Her final involves a 10 page long essay on one topic, you are forced to do a lot of reading in order to complete each homework assignment. I would avoid taking her class if possible.
Most of class grade was determined on one paper which was submitted as a draft and final. Unreasonably harsh grading on this paper, for example was given a grade of 80% on draft for a "weak title" and not ideas not being fully flushed out. Class average for my class ended with around a 73%. Would not recommend if you want to keep your GPA up.
I loved her! Her class was actually kind of easy and I appreciated no tests and gave us a lot of time to work on our overall paper. She gives you ideas and I love how much she helped me.
