All she can talk about is sex, sex, and sex. She grades way too hard for a 200 level class. It's really hard to even attempt an A. When you go get help from you, you even get more confused. :/
She a Canadian trapped in an American body. It was a really interesting class.

Very great facilitation of discussions, interesting class material, and very helpful when coming for extra help.
Class had the potential to be interesting, but instead often turned out to be a drag. She seemed excited about her discussions, but the class seemed uninterested in what she was talking about. To confirm another comment posted: talks about SEX way to much
Nancy has an annoying habit of refering to herself in the first person. I thought that the class would be fun, but it turned out to be rather dull, mostly because the professor stated her own opinion so thoroughly that there was nothing else to talk about
While her class was boring and very little effort was required, her grading was a little off. I did not enjoy her personality either. She loved to talk about herself in the first person and her favorite phrase was "that is so insightful."
After analyzing works, you go to class to have it reanalyzed with her opinions over and over till it gets extremely boring. She talks a lot about sex! Grading is off, and she expects a lot from vague expectations. Makes you hate English even more.
Nancy rocks! Kind, and very helpful she is the teacher you wish for in a creative writing class. No so much an easy grader though. Make sure to attend class.
Her class lacked sufficient critical analysis. It was more like Oprah’s book club. I must have herd her say, “How did this make you fee?” a thousand times.
She talked the entire 2 hour class. Many readings were just plain boring, and i generally enjoy english classes. As another post said- this one lacked critical analysis. The class was well organized, but I'd NEVER reccomend it. the class should be called "christianity lit" not "american lit"
If pain is your thing, take a class with this professor. She's vague, she gets snippy with you when you ask her a question, and EVERYTHING in her 216 class seems to have something to do with slavery and/or racism. This would be fine if the class were called "American -Slave- Literature".
Yech. Self-absorbed, twittering, annoying, and very arbitrary in her grading. Drove me crazy; I was really excited for the class then I quickly realized she would ruin it. Talks in a Canadian accent for some reason.
Loved it, loved her! She was helpful, kind, engaging and made the class flow great. Read the other posts, maybe it's the class but for this one she was AWESOME! Taking anohter class from her in the fall I enjoyed it so much!

I have mixed feelings about this class. She is pretty boring and talks the entire 2 hours. Not a morning class to take. But she was clear in what she wanted us to do and had interesting pieces to read. A so so class.
Pagh is great! Nancy wants her students to suceed. I felt like her door was always open for help. She gave great feedback on papers. I would take her again and again!
I really enjoyed my class with Nancy. But you have to actively try to participate. She's always eager to give her students as much help as possible, and she's very approachable.
Nancy is very enthusiastic. She expects you to do your part though, so dont try to slack off too much. She is always ready to hear tons of different ideas and is very helpful if you are confused or just want to talk a little more about topics in class. Would definitely take her again!
Nancy is a great person, and a fun to talk with. The pieces she chose for us to read were a excellent, and discussions were fun. However, she had a tendency to take over discussions, and the organization of her class is sometimes confusing. Take the class, but be prepared for some busywork and a couple confusing assignments.
She has a way of giving paper critiques that keep you motivated. Sometimes she talks too much but the class is great, fun, and very comprehensive.
Nancy is a really sweet and caring person. She treats her students like we are stupid sometimes, though. The readings she chooses are very good.
i felt that nancy expected a lot from us as students, which in my opinion is fantastic. She thinks that we are all capable of improvement and really pushes us to do so. Her conferences were the best way to spend our time. I feel like i am a much better writer having taken a class from her.
Nancy is really wonderful - she is helpful, fun, and sweet. I felt that I learned a lot in this class and it was a blast - great discussions. It was pretty easy, just do the readings and a couple of essay tests as well as some discussion groups. All in all, easy grade but very interesting and she's always well-prepared and funny. Fun class!
really helpful. does awesome small group conferencing.
Nancy is a challeging professor but it is totally worth the hard work. She is an awesome professor and i learned so much in her class!
Expects a lot from students but is really helpful and nice. Gives a lot of individualized attention. She can be a little nitpicky and idiosyncratic with her comments, though, and sometimes hijacks discussions. But I loved her teaching style and the setup of this class. It has really helped improve my writing. Would definitely recommend her.
Nancy is a lot of fun. I really enjoyed her class. She is a very tough reader, though, and she does not have trouble saying if she doesn't like what you have written. The class can be a little frustrating for some students because she doesn't provide any grades until the end of the quarter; everything depends on the final portfolio. Fun, though.
I really like nancy as a person, she's funny, intersting and really excited about her class. I found her a little ridiculouse as a teacher. In discussions she's amazed almost anything said, even if its not particularly insightful. She's fun and interesting, but I wouldn't take her for a class that you really hope to learn in.
Be prepared for her to talk and talk and talk and talk. She will go off on tangents and you realize 10 minutes later that she is STILL talking. The class all in all was good. Very relaxed. Just be prepared to zone out when she's talking because she won't stop.
Really nice, enthusiastic teacher. Assignments were interesting, more about challenging yourself as a writer and as a person (this was a creative nonfiction class). Very helpful.
Nancy is fun and engaging. She scared me a little at first, with a couple grumpy days and some harsh criticism on my drafts, but I got used to her. I think everyone who dislikes her at first will come to love her by the end of the class. A great people-person. :)
Nancy is a great teacher. She always comes to class friendly, excited, and prepared. Attendance isn't mandatory but strongly suggested. The course relies heavily on the readings, and class helps to talk about these and prepare for the tests. Overall she makes it interesting and is very enthusiastic.
Nancy is very nice & entertaining. Requirements clearly laid out & easy to follow. My only complaint is that despite receiving all positive feedback over the quarter & glowing praise on my portfolio, she gave me an A-! (No, I didn't miss class more than was allowed. I think she disliked that I didn't sign up for the "optional" conference.)
Nancy is such an amazing professor. She really gets you excited about the readings and goes over it all the next day. This class has a TON of reading but if you do it and go to class you will get a good grade!
LOVE HER! i really enjoyed her class alot. there is alot of reading, but material on the midterm and final will be stuff that you discuss in class so go! she is very passionate about teaching english, and it really makes the class enjoyable.
workload was far too demanding. with paper after paper due, readings and TWO presentations, i found myself completely overwhelmed. also, at times the class took me back to days of highschool. i felt like i was talked down to like a child. we actually played the "name game"
nice, fun professor. the midterm and final are easy if you read the material (LOTS of it) and show up to class to follow the discussion.
This professor grades based on the portfolio, not on the product or performance.
Nancy is the best professor i've had at WWU. She is so intelligent and explains things really well. She is very open to any discussion and the class is very organized. It's a lot of work but definitely worth it.
Great professor. She is very open and is great at sparking lively discussions. Also, she makes students feel very comfortable in class and values what you have to say. Turned my GUR requirement into one of my favorite classes I've taken at Western. Do keep in mind, however, that her grading is pretty tough, so make sure to keep up with readings.
This was the second class I had with Nancy. She is an amazing prof and I can't recommend her enough! Fair grader and makes classes interesting and fun! Take a class with her and you won't regret it!
Grades solely on portfolio. No clear feedback on how you are doing in class final grades are posted. She is very nice but conferences and class time do not contribute much to your grade. She is very talkative but if you ask her a question she provides you with ambiguous answers; she speaks before you can clearly articulate your question.
I've taken two classes with Nancy, and I love her! She's very enthusiastic about writing and very open to trying new styles. Gives a lot of critique, so take what helps and don't stress about the rest. I would definitely recommend her!
Nancy is very enthusiastic and approachable. She gives a LOT of feedback and will tell you if something you've written isn't good. Personally I got really annoyed with one of the texts, but we didn't spend all that long on it. She's not an easy grader but she's really helpful if you put in the time. I'd take a class from her again.
Nancy is a very nice lady. She is sweet and enthusiastic about her. The readings were great and there were no assignments, but the class discussions were extremely boring and I had no interest in going to them at all. The books were beaten to death in discussion and made me less interested in them.
Never take a class with Nancy. She has a personality disorder which she brings to her interaction with her students. She dominates conversation and never answers your questions fully. It it pointless to even try talking to her about anything as you will end up frustrated. Grades only on portfolio. YOU WILL BE SORRY IF YOU TAKE HER CLASS!!!!
Nancy has a weird way of addressing students. Her rhetoric is evasive, she avoids directly approaching subjects. She was an editor before becoming a teacher. She is a good creative writer, but she falls short when it comes to addressing the importance of certain topics. I felt like I was being graded very subjectively.Take another class!
Nancy has a fun personality but was vague with her feedback. The only grade students receive is on an end of quarter portfolio which is graded on things that have nothing to do with actual mastery of writing skills, like page numbering. I left feeling frustrated and a little resentful.
No textbook, but she makes you print off dozens of articles racking up your print fee. Class is mostly discussion lead, do the readings or else. Only grades you receive is at the very end when you turn in the final portfolio - almost impossible to tell how you're doing in the class. She gives you VERY long winded answers, so don't ask questions.
Incredibly unwilling to review work with students. You must cater to her desired taste in writing, whether or not the rhetorical moves you make accomplish what was asked of you in the rubric.
Never taking a class w/ Nancy again. Grades like a high school Eng. teacher, course material is dull and dated, and VERY passive-aggressive. She actually really reminds me of Professor Umbridge.
She's the reason I want to major in creative writing. Nancy always seemed passionate about the subject and about her students' writing. I looked forward to class every day. Be prepared to work hard, especially if writing is not your thing. That said, Nancy's class gives you a chance to have fun and think outside the box and develop your writing.
She loves hearing herself talk but I learned nothing from her that I couldn't learn from google. Self impressed & strips students of creative license. When you leave (required) notes on anthology selections she corrects your thoughts on them, even if it was an opinion she will comment things like "no, not really". Passive-Agressive & Umbridgesque.
Nancy seems nice but she's really just being fake. She will tell you to take risks and be creative in your writing but then she knit picks every word you say and every comma you put and gives you a sucky grade. She also requires you to print out a ridiculous amount of stuff and is the most anal teacher ever!!!
The class was interesting, and she was great at coming up with exercises to make writing a bit easier. HOWEVER she very much likes to make the class about her own work. She once interrupted one of my readings mid sentence to read her own poem to the class. Additionally, her feedback is really not helpful as she doesnt seem to really read the work
If you want to learn anything, Nancy Pagh's classroom is the wrong place for you. Her classes are discussion-based but all of the discussion is extremely superficial and completely unhelpful and she does nothing to lead the group in a better direction. If you go to her for help you can expect nothing. Don't dare miss a single day of class either.
Nancy Pagh is a great professor if you just want an easy "A" and you care nothing for learning. She's also great if you never have any questions for her outside of class and you never have a problem with the group project, and especially if you never, ever need to miss a single day of class because of an emergency. No education happening here.
Nancy is a very kind person if you are nice to her. However, some other students in my class were very rude to her, causing her to be snappy back, (which is not her fault). Her feedback on pieces were vague, and graded my portfolio as a D based on aspects that were not on the rubric. Fortunately, I resubmitted it for a higher grade.
Nancy is not clear in her instructions at all. She makes no sense and types in sentences that are not direct in what she wants and then she gets upset when you don't understand her. She is not a good professor and will be rude to you if you make a mistake. Don't take this class. It is such a headache.
This was an easy A class, so long as you at least try to incorperate some of the "lessons" into your creative work. The only complaint I might have is that the "notebook journaling" may seem pointless at times.
Nancy is such a joy. She is the type of professor who demands a ridiculous amount from her students such as put your phone away and read long texts for homework all while learning absolutely nothing at all. She is very passive aggressive if you get on her bad side and she's call out a student out in front of the class. Have fun :)
I was so scared to take this class after reading some of the comments on here, but when I got to class I found Nancy to be really nice and approachable. The class quickly became one of my favorites so I guess I'll just say don't take it if you don't like to read. It's that simple. Other than that just show up and make an effort and you'll pass.
Nancy is a passionate prof, but for creative writing it feels like you have to write strictly according to her tastes and literary values, which can feel a little stifling at times. She does provide detailed and mostly helpful feedback, and class itself was always very enjoyable. Nancy clearly loves working with students.
She sucks. I will never take a class with her ever again in my time at WWU. Gives you 23 readings to study for the final exam, but only picks five. Grades your assignments with no sympathy. Passive aggressive. Unreasonable. Loves the sound of her own voice way too much.
She lies to her students when she says she is teaching 5 classes when really she is only teaching 3. She is also not very accessible outside of class and office hours no matter how much you tell her that you can't meet due to your work schedule.
ENG202 wasn't that great. Nancy grades hard, meaning she tells you to be creative and then grades you down for not writing exactly like she does. Your writing will improve in some ways. Rubrics and assignments are unclear. She seems nice but is very passive aggressive. Would not take again.
Nancy is a passionate professor with a love of women's lit, which made me excited about the class from the start - however, she is ridiculously passive aggressive and a difficult grader. If exams are not written perfectly the way she expects, do not expect more than a B-/B at best. Extreme amount of work for a class that doesn't have much learning.
Nancy is not cooperative at all She gives no breaks on tests and is not student friendly I will never take a class again from her and she monopolizeS all conversations in the class. You will not get an A either. Noone does!
Her tests are hard. She gives you a few questions and you have to chose 4. You cannot write on the test sheet or she will take points off. She has the class split into groups and has students meet outside of class to complete a "5th hour log". I didn't like the structure of the class and the class discussions are pointless.
Discussion based classes are not my favourite, and her class was virtually ONLY discussions. She complicates the lit and she is very ambiguous as far as what she wants you to take from each class since it's mainly students expressing themselves. If you don't want to sit and listen to people complaining incessantly then stay away.
If you're looking for a class that makes you a better writer or thinker this is not that class. Class discussions are superficial and never analyze in-depth. Your high school AP class did a better job. Prof only cares about her opinion and does not give good feedback on papers. On the midterm the avg score for men: C+, women: A-
There isn't much talk about what makes a "good" essay as she figures you already know. It's entirely a discussion class so it's pretty much just listening to what other people say. There are "journal posts" in which you respond to what people said in class, but only 3 of them. Your one group project pretty much defines the entire class.
Nancy's creative writing class can be fun, if you write by her rules. She has very specific taste which you have to abide to in order to do well. Workshops are good and study guided, but some of Nancy's feedback is vague. Still, she's a good teacher and the class was enjoyable.
Nancy's been teaching forever at WWU, and like any person who gets too comfortable, her "teaching"--if you could call it that--leaves something to be desired. This course inspires apathy; the few who still attend class leave bored to tears. If you are a Lit major or just looking to fulfill a GUR, choose another class. There are better options.
Nancy pulls the wool over academics. She is constantly acusing people of cheating thinks she is always right and if she dosent like you she'll give you a bad grade don't waste your time on this one
I took a class with Nancy in 2017 and I think she has shifted teaching styles since some of these comments. I do not like English and didn't want to take the class but I actually kinda liked it. Nancy was super nice, understanding, and let the class choose a lot of what we'd be tested on. Fair, understanding and flexible. She was funny too!!
This was my second English class with Nancy. The majority of the class is discussion but if you do the readings you definitely don't need to go to every class: they're mainly for clarity. Make sure you read the syllabus carefully because she's not always explicit about due dates and they can sneak up on you.
Nancy assigns lots of reading, but it's all really interesting. She inspires vibrant class discussion - I really looked forward to coming! Research paper at the end was pretty simple and easy to write
Nancy is SO supportive - wow. What I most enjoyed was her insightful feedback on my drafts. Her comments challenged me, but also helped me grow and develop as a writer. I know that I am meant for creative writing after taking this class.
This class is for learning how to write professionally about literature, but I found the professor to be extremely unprofessional in her feedback on student work and gave unclear guidelines about what she really wants in a paper. She seems more interested in being entertained than actually teaching, and makes it difficult to muster respect for her.
Nancy Pagh is one of my least favorite teachers because of her very subjective grading habits. She also hosts mandatory conferences outside of class which you attend each week. Furthermore she was very vocal about her personal convictions.
Nancy's a tough grader. Most can't handle that. Class isn't hard. Wrote a total of 5 papers. 3 were explorations & had a min 1 pg length requirement. Next a 7-10 page portfolio, then a final portfolio 10-20 pgs. Required wkly grp meetings for peer review, but that is going away as 5th hr is no longer required. Reading sched was wonky. OK otherwise.
Nancy is a tough grader, but super nice. She can also be slightly disorganized but is easily accessible outside of class and is always willing to give good feedback. If you want an A, you'll have to work for it, but if you can settle for a B you'll be fine.
She's a pretty harsh grader -- it's not too hard to get in the B range, but A's are pretty hard. She's also weird about late work -- if you turn something in even a minute late you get an F. However, it's clear that she cares a lot about her subject and what the students want, and is super accessible outside of class.
She passionate about her the subjects she is teaching but her teaching method overall is all over the place. She does not usually have a set plan and if she does it is extremely strict. This also is the same for homework or finals. Fine class but would defiantly would NOT take again because of grading and lack of structure.
Nancy is overall a pleasant woman, but when it comes to her teaching there is much to be desired. In terms of actual content very little is done by Nancy herself, instead she opens the floor for discussion. These discussions determine the feel and flow of a class and Nancy does not regulate them. I would not take another class with her.
Nancy is a sweet woman, but she grades very hard and is very strict about attendance and electronics. This class was weighted mostly - a 6-10 page portfolio worth 60% and a process essay worth 40%. I don't feel like I learned a lot in class, but she gave a lot of good feedback on the pieces you submit every week.
Nancy is very enthusiastic about the subject and that's about it. We wrote 4 stories throughout the quarter and weren't given credit on any of them. There are only two grades (due at the same time) one 60% and the other 40%. The 40% assignment is pointless. Why there would be an analytical essay in a creative writing class, I don't know.
Fully Asynch class. The syllabus and module guides were very organized and detailed, but you have to make sure you dont miss any fine print in the assignment expectations. This class was a lot of checking off lists and not very personable except for the discussion posts. Like most English classes, you can make it as hard on yourself as you want.
350 was helpful in that I learned about the genre conventions of literary texts, and by the end, I was able to use these conventions in my own writing. Still, Pagh is unforgiving in her assessment of both drafts and the final portfolio (the latter of which makes up the majority of your grade). She is also fairly rude in responding to questions.
This class is solid, she's really good at organizing an online course and grades quickly. Love the modules set up. No rubric so its unclear what grade you're going to get; just follow the instructions carefully and you'll be fine.
Professor Pagh is very particular when it comes to grading. It seems at times like she would cut points off for the most random sorts of things. Your name wasn't in the write spot, it wasn't titled how she expected things to be titled. For a creative writing class it sure didn't feel like it.
If you don't like English/lit professors that are extremely nitpicky about how you format your papers, this isn't the class for you. She has a load of specific settings and margins for her papers and she WILL mark you down for missing even one. Unforgiving with late work without emergency. 5 page 'reading response' due weekly and its single space.
60$ textbook written by this teacher & all proceeds go to her. Grading style is harsh-she expects an abnormal formatting and if you don't fulfill this she will not even read your work and give you a 0. Publicly humiliates students in front of the class for being late. She treats all of her students as if they are lesser than her or unintelligent.
If you love writing, Nancy is a great professor. Generally gives very good feedback and assessments are do-able. Perhaps a bit unclear with instructions at times, but is accessible during office hours to meet up with students. All around, Nancy is a very good professor who is knowledgeable and passionate about creative writing.
Tough grader. If you didn't follow her instructions exactly she would mark an assignment as a fail. She's nice for the most part although there were some instances in her class that felt a bit off with how she treated students that needed DAC. Also, the attendance was strange and she could still mark you absent if you weren't participating enough.
Yikers... Surprised any one at all rated her 3 stars, let alone 5. She graded one of my creative writing assignments incorrectly with a zero because it was "too long and a part of a narrative", and when I pointed this out to her, she said that it was her bad on her end, but regardless, the grade stay zero. She's nice but... yikes...
My favorite professor. She puts deep thought into the course structure and the assigned reading. Author of a textbook "Write Moves" which is full of useful approaches to writing and illustrative writing samples. Classes are structured around large/small group discussions, not summaries of the material, so do the readings. Go to office hours!
Professor Pagh is the toughest grader I have encountered in my 3 years of university-level schooling. She will give you a failing grade if you do not follow the instructions exactly to a tee, or if you are even a minute late for submission. She tends to be condescending to her students and the required material is her own work (a $60 paperback!)
A bit of warning just from seeing the syllabus: she requires you to buy her own textbook and a specific kind of notebook, and you'll be required to bring a laptop as well. Participation (2/5ths of your grade) is based on things like having good posture, eye contact, speaking and being called on, and reading your work aloud in front of the class.
i took ENG350 and that is a class where you only talk about the readings and don't do anything new until outside class, in the textbook that only she and the school have. it's a two hour class that should be OPTIONAL for attendance. it's a waste of time that anyone has to go.
Pagh has high expectations, but engaging class discussions make up for the strict formatting and unforgiving late policies. unstuck study was a lifesaver for exam prep.
Dr. Nancy inspired in me a further love for writing and editing. She has a kind, compassionate personality. The chance to revise my own work taught me a lot. She is very wise, experienced, and welcomes students to her office to teach them all that they can learn. She is a treasure! It is an honor to know her and learn from her.
Counts you absent if you don't bring the textbook, paper is not the correct format (Yes even if its not double spaced), having the old version of a textbook, if you don't talk enough or seen with any electronics (even laptop) out before class even starts. Expect to go into office hours to fight some sort of zero, even if you are the best student.
Attendance policy is rather harsh and she will grade very harshly. If you don't follow the theme of a draft as closely as she wants, you will receive a 0%. However, her feedback is very detailed and helpful and her in-class discussions are helpful and build community.
I didn't learn a thing. Almost every class is led by a student and is incredibly awkward and unfocused. Nancy didn't do or say almost anything all quarter. Her feedback on work is vague and suggests she doesn't understand what anyone is doing. She also has a strange mean/disrespectful streak. It's also very unclear how she grades.
