very nice teacher...types lecture notes and gives them out...bad part is that she reads off those in more detail so it's boring in the class...practice quizes and midterms are always giving and thy are very helpful
Very good professor. Very helpful and easy to understand. Allows you to use a few pages of notes for tests and hands out detailed lecture notes. Clearly explains problems. Problems are real world based making it easier to understand.
very nice teacher. some of the material is a little difficult, but she explains everything in detail. practice tests & quizzes are a lot like the actual tests, so make sure you do those & understand them & you should have a fairly easy time in the class.
Pfenning reminds me of a hippie. She reads lectures from the lecture notes she hands out in class. She's addicted to statistics...which just makes her sad.
I'm not sure how much easier she could make statistics. Types lecture notes out for you, will go over topics as many times as necessary to make them clear, and makes quizes that represent exactly what you will see on the exams. Made hard material easy.
ABSOLUTELY worst teacher ever!! Yeah she types out her notes and all that but she is a terrible teacher. If u like to learn on your own and you want to read tests that make no sense take her! Shes nice but she just can not teach. DONT TAKE!
Types lecture notes but doesn't go over them well. Lecture was basically pointless for me. Homeworks were unnecessarily long and involved with areas that weren't even covered in recitation or on the tests. Final was hard. Avoid if you hate wasting time.
Awesome, and helpful.
Statistics is boring, but it's not Dr. Pfenning's fault. She's helpful and genuinely tries to make it interesting, but I'll be honest- I slept through more than half the lectures. If you absolutely have to take stats, she's pretty good.
Good teacher, make sure you prepare for the tests. Some material can be confusing but it's not her fault. Make sure you prepare adequately and you'll do fine.
I thought she made stats very easy to learn. She prints up the notes but it is still helpful to go to class, also she gives a ton of extra credit.
Her notes are terrible, her tests are hard, and you learn more in recitation than in her class!
just dont.
I am really terrible at math, but Pfenning makes me feel like I'm good at it...she follows the prepared lecture notes and very carefully goes over the steps. In my case, I had a TA who didnt speak English so I had to get everything from lecture. Very cool hippy-ish, makes it easy.
Her class is not too difficult. She gives extra credit frequently. Her quizzes are simple and homework is not too bad. Her practice tests are much easier than the actual tests, so know your stuff. Not bad though, just requires a work ethic.
Dr. Pfenning is awesome. She's really clear and really knows what she's doing. Her examples really put the material into perspective and she's always available for questions.
Dr. Pfenning is the nicest lady. She really tries to get the class involved everyday and works from her own notes. The class moves quickly and the quizzes are open notes. The exams are not difficult either (and you get cheat sheets).
boring lectures, everything is on the class notes, but go to class bc the in class examples are on the test. offered alot of extra credit which boosted my grade from an A- to an A. treat the extra credit like homework and you are golden.
Nancy is a pretty easy teacher. Quizzes are open note and cheat sheets are allowed on tests. The only thing is, she's extremely annoying. She doesn't explain things well at times and jumps around alot. I learned more from my TA than from her because she likes to only give examples and no explanations.
Very nice lady, but def go to class. No need to study if u understand the material in class. Sit towards the front too, she'll like you more. Do the h/w b/c it's the majority of your grade-I did mine w/my TA every week-give it a shot!
EXCELLENT !!! Great teacher and tests are just like the notes (which you get to use on the tests which was AWESOME!!!). TAKE PFENNING!!
Nice lady and makes herself very available to students. Uses a lot of examples in teaching which i don't like but maybe it works for other people. Class starts out super-easy but don't let it fool you, it will get tougher. Still, everyone automatically gets 50pts extra credit so you probably will do well.
She's sooopo friendly! If you ever need help, she is more than willing. Go to her office hours and you CANNOT do badly!
She's sooopo friendly! If you ever need help, she is more than willing. Go to her office hours and you CANNOT do badly!
This class was really easy. I sometimes skipped weeks at a time and still ended up with a B+ for the class. It was much easier learning from the practice quizzes and tests, especially since I couldn't read Dr. Pfenning's handwriting on the board. All it was to me was a bunch of scribbles. Hardest part for me was deciphering what was on the board.
Dr. Pfenning was one of the best teachers I have ever had. She emails you back in about one hour and is always available for help! I would definiltely recommend taking her.
I took AP stats in high school, but I wanted a refresher course. This was perfect. Dr. Pfenning knows stats inside and out and is a great help if you need it.
the practice quizes and exams are so helpful! dr. pfenning is really sweet too- this class is very easy with minimal effort. take this class!!
an amazing teacher. like everyone else i was dreading statistics until i cam to her class. I was actually able to learn stats and enjoy it! Wish there were more teachers like her :)
Professor Pfenning is pretty boring. Coincidentally, so is statistics. Fortunately, introductory statistics is really easy, provided you do the weekly homework. I went to every lecture. I probably didn't have to.
I had someone teach everything a day before each test and never went to class and got a B in the class. When I did go I slept. It was pretty easy.
Dr. Pfenning is exactly the professor you want when you are forced to take a painful requirement such as statistics. You WILL fall behind if you don't do the work - the work load is pretty fair and helpful, and Pfenning is brilliant - personable, concise, and extremely helpful. I owe a lot to her for helping me get a good grade in this class.
Dr. Pfenning's STAT 1000 was well-organized and helpful. The class is not difficult at all, with numerous extra credit opportunities. I feel that Dr. Pfenning was held back by the fact that the class is just intro stats, and would recommend taking the honors version instead (which I believe she teaches).
Okay. Take this class with someone you know. You'll have the same answers on homework but ta's will ALWAYS give you different grades.--odd. You'll get the book in powerpoints (get a large freaking binder!!!) class isn't too bad. sit near the front and she'll learn your name and like you. AND FINALLY. EXTRA CREDIT. she gives a ton. the best part :)
work load is manageable notes are clear and easy to understand. if you do the work you will succeed would recommend this teacher! one of the best i've had!
Tons of help is provided in this class. The workload is sizable but doable - just don't fall behind!
OMG, Nancy is the best teacher i have ever had, she cares about her students. She actually wants you to pass unlike other teachers. I took the honors 1000 so the work is a lot, but if you do not fall behind, i assure you, you will do well. She's the greatest. Nancy for best teacher at Pitt!!!!!!!
Good professor. Really into statistics and it shows, she really knows her stuff. Extremely helpful in office hours. Will work with you until you understand the topic. Course is a lot of work but managable if you stay with it. I would take another class with her.
Dr. Pfenning is an excellent professor. Her lectures are very concise and to the point. She was always willing to help. With about 5 weeks left in the semester, in my 80 person lecture she knows probably about 90% of the students names, which speaks for itself how dedicated she is.
She is an excellent teacher! I'd highly recommend to take her STAT class! She's always willing to help. With almost 100 kids in class, she could remember all their names!
GREAT teacher. She teaches at an awesome pace, so you hardly ever feel like she's speeding through and leaving you behind. Her office hours are AMAZING and highly suggest students go EVERY week, and come early, because they get crowded. Plus, she curves. =)
This class was ugh. Pfenning is a really nice lady and very helpful if u need help. But class could get really boring but sometimes she tried to keep it interesting with some props. HW is a big part of grade so thats a must, she gives major HW help in office hours though. Test were very weird and confusing compared to wat ur used to...def not easy.
soooo boring and sooooo much work to do...dont fall behind because the class moves at such a fast pace you'll never catch up.
Dr. Pfenning is such asweet lady and a great teacher. The honors class is great because she requires you to give presentations that really help you to learn the material by reinforcing whats learned in class and it raises your grade. She is always willing to help students & i highly recommend this class. She always makes herself available for help
Great professor! One of the best professors i've had at pitt. She made a really difficult subject easy...which is really hard to do. She's so nice and understanding. I would recommend her to everyone!
Dr. Pfenning is a fantastic professor! She provides PDF lecture slides, so taking notes on a laptop is a snap. Homework can be challenging but exams are not difficult at all. She also has 50+ bonus points built directly into the point distribution. Never went to office hours but I heard she was extremely helpful. I strongly recommend taking her!
Boring lecturer, but its a boring subject to many people and she really does try to make it more interesting. class is easy, but if you fall behind, you will do very poorly in her class. she really wants her students to do well in her class. i definitely recommend her for stats
SO NICE. I didn't pay attention during lectures, but after I sat through them and filled the slides in, I went back thorugh the slides later and was able to compplete the homeworks. The book is only necessary for the homeworks, but what a nice relaxing class! Honestly, you're allowed to use some notes on the test so I swear, you can't go wrong here
Wonderful teacher. She made stats bearable. It is a decent amount of work, but you learn a lot.
Great professor!! She made stats applicable to real life and there was lots of extra credit.. She was kind of hard to track down for additional help but otherwise she was a pleasure...
decent lecturer. tests were straight-forward. she lets you use cheat sheets. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS; she basically does your homework for you. very, very sweet lady.
Very nice woman. Very easy class. Do your work and you will get an A. I personally rarely went to class, but I read the book. This was enough to do well. I didn't learn too much, but I didn't really want to. Easy easy, but make sure you do the work.
Went through lecture notes lightning fast and not very accessible for help. Did not answer questions fully in class either. Personally, it was a horrible experience.
Prof Pfenning is very nice. Her lectures can be a little fast and confusing at times but she is very fair about her exams. She does not try to trick you so if you pay attention and keep up, you'll certainly do well in the class. I retain so much from her class, I'm glad I took it.
Really nice, but slightly boring. Really fair on grading. At the end of the semester she gives 50 bonus HW points, and drops the lowest quiz grade. She allows cheat sheets for the exams. All the quizzes are open book and the TA goes over an almost identical sample quiz right before taking them. If you pay moderate attention it should be EASY.
Dr. Pfenning is the best! Her class is extremely easy. She is such a sweetheart and sets the class up for you to do well. 50 bonus points for HW, cheat sheets for exams, drops your lowest quiz score. She really just wants her students to do well. Just go to her lectures, and go see her if you need any help, and her class should be a very easy A!
Dr. Pfenning is extremely helpful! By no means is the class an easy A, but its very attainable. Just stay on top of your work and don't slack off and you should be able to get an A. Honors section consisted of 50 Points extra credit homework, 2 presentations, 2 midterms and a final. Test are hard but not tricky. Great person too.
Dr. Pfenning does a great job at teaching Statistics. Lots of examples, extremely organized lectures, enough homework to practice and plenty of extra credit work to get a good grade if you want it. And she brings hands-on learning material, like M&M's and Reeses's cups, too. Take her class!
Genuinely nice person who wants her students to do well. Go to lecture, pay attention, and you should be just fine. She is very clear and organized and gives numerous extra credit opportunities with HW (which is quite easy, by the way). Quizzes are open note/book and you can have cheat sheets for tests. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Mrs. Pfenning is awesome! I'm by no means a math student, and I've had no problem with her class. If you go to her office hours, she'll go over every single homework problem for you, and her quizzes are open-note. She knows the name of 75% of the class, and there are over 100 of us. Definitely recommend her!
Although lecture can be a bit boring, Dr. Pfenning is an excellent teacher.
Professor Pfenning was super helpful in her office hours. I recommend you go there for homework since she will practically give you the correct answers in a group setting. Lecture can be kind of boring but helps to go to get the power point notes. Her exams allow you to have a sheet of paper(s) with notes = super helpful
Dr. Pfenning was able to present the material in such a way as to put the concepts within my grasp. When a mid-term personal crisis came up, she worked to bring me up to speed with the material. She also drops the lowest of four exams and provides plenty of extra credit. The text book was not mandatory and I got by fine without it.
Best class I've taken at Pitt. Take the honors option if available.
Dr. Pfenning was top-notch and I enrolled in a higher-level statistics class afterwards because of this class. Definitely worth taking.
You need the textbook. Class isnt mandatory but definitely helps if you arent familiar with stats. Tests are easier than homework which is 350/1050 points but go to office hours and she gives you the answer. Just stay on top of the work and you'll be fine. By the end though you'll be so confused of what the math means though.
Nancy is a great teacher and she really knows what she's talking about, but he class isn't always super exciting. Then again, it is statistics. The majority of your grade will be from homework assignments that are due every week, but as long as you put time into those you will get a good grade. Recitations and text book are necessary.
Very nice and lenient teacher. Definitely take for Stats200/
Dr. Pfenning was one of my favorite professors at Pitt thus far. Her lectures are well organized and clear. You get extra credit through the hw and cheat sheets on the exams. She's very approachable and accommodating. Definitely take her!
I was skeptical at first of enrolling in the honors version of Stat 1000, but now I have no regrets. Dr. Pfenning puts so much care into her students. Her lectures are clear and carefully planned; she's a seasoned professor who wrote the textbook and knows exactly what she's doing. Tests are very fair. I highly recommend her as a stats professor.
Professor Pfenning is a great teacher and a really nice person. She honestly cares about her students. If you attend lecture, take notes on her slides, and do the homework you will do well. Tests are very straight forward and she does review tests with you. Gives a lot of extra credit. I would highly recommend her to anyone.
Lots of homework, but it's easy to get help from her or a TA, and it really boosts your grade. Weekly recitation quizzes, but you go over almost identical practice quizzes in recitation. Lets you use note sheets for exams. She really knows what she's doing and has lots of office hours. Gives print-outs which makes note taking easy.
Nancy is super sweet and kind!! She is also hilarious, and makes stats bearable. Go to office hours so that you can get 100% on all the homework, which is important if you want that A. You get note sheets for the exams. Weekly quizzes are also open notes. Work hard and it will pay off.
Nancy Pfenning is my favorite professor at Pitt. She cares tremendously about the success of her students. She does assign homework every week, along with a quiz weekly as well. She is a ton of help during office hours, and she has a lot of resources on her website. I would definitely recommend her for STAT 0200.
Definitely the most organized professor I have ever had! All her lectures slides are available on a website she's made for the course, which is really convenient. Print them out and take notes on them during class. Her lectures are extremely clear and she does a good job of making the material intuitive. Also just a really nice person!
I love Dr. Pfenning so much, easily my favorite professor at Pitt. She cares so much about her students and gives 50 points bonus to balance out the homework which is graded for accuracy. The weekly quizzes are exactly like the practice quizzes along with the exams are like the practice exams. TAKE HER NO DOUBT!!!!
Dr. Pfenning is a great teacher. Her lectures can be boring sometimes but she uses clicker questions for extra credit points so it's worth showing up. Definitely go to her office hours because she is very helpful with homework. Weekly recitation quizzes and exams aren't bad because she gives very similar practice quizzes and exams. I recommend her!
Dr. Pfenning is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. Even in a big class, she made sure to get to know each student by name. Her lectures are very thorough with helpful examples and hands-on activities.
Professor Pfenning was one of my favorite teachers I've had at Pitt. Stat in the Modern World was a pretty easy class, and I would recommend getting the optional textbook as it really helps. The tests are straightforward and there are lots of opportunities for extra credit.
Teaches the material very well but not a very personable professor. I guess this would be a good choice if you just plan on going to lecture and never needing to go to office hours or try to access her outside of class because she is uninterested.
Best teacher I have taken at Pitt. Yes, there's lots of homework which is weighted highly, but if you do the homework, go to lecture, and pay attention decently you will receive a high grade. Tests are based on Homework and practice tests. I highly recommend taking Dr. Pfenning.
Nancy is a great prof. She uses real world data to teach stats which makes it enjoyable and more engaging. She's pretty chill and easy to talk to and does a great job one-on-one, clear and easy to understand
Great lecturer and grader. As for the class itself (honors stat 1000), its content is not difficult. You get allocated a cheat sheet for tests. There are no quizzes (because it's honor's stat, you'll be doing seminars where you either present a study or write questions about someone's presentation instead). I'll definitely miss this class.
Mad easy but frustrating. Her book is $300 hardcopy but $20 as an ebook. Her hw questions arent about stats. Eg If teachers knew how many nights high schoolers went out, would they assign more or less homework? Idk Nance! BUT the quizzes and practice quizzes are identical and open note. You dont need to go to class- all the infos in the text.
Nancy is super super sweet! She adds in 50 bonus points at the end of the semester and also does 50 points of lab which is just done for completion. Weekly quizzes which are open note and IDENTICAL to practice quizzes. Homework can be done in office hours to ensure a 100 on them. Over all she is so so nice and the class is an easy A.
An easy class if you can grasp a few of the confusing topics. Go to office hours and she'll give the answers to the homework which counts for a large chunk of your grade. Practice quizzes can get annoying but if you have a TA that knows what they're doing it's easy to do well. Easy A, would recommend if you need a basic stat
I took this hearing from people it was easy. I myself have no stats background which is why I think I found it hard.. lots of homework (due each week). You do labs that are pointless because you get full credit anyways. If you have a bad TA it makes things worse because they are the ones do practice quizzes with you each week.
All the notes, practice quizzes and exams with solutions are on her website. Her office hours are helpful since she wrote the textbook that's used. You can have notes for quizzes and exams.
I had absolutely no statistics background going into this class, but Dr. Pfenning truly makes it easy for all students to succeed. All of her lecture slides are online, as are practice quizzes/exams. You can use a cheat sheet with whatever you want on it for both quizzes and exams. Overall an easy class!
