Best class I've ever taken! Very clear and fun lectures.
Good Class, Bad Teacher. Shows extreme favoritism. Rude and stand offish
class is alright but her examples are kind of far fetched
Good Teacher, once you get through first exam you'll do better on others..STUDY!
Still playing favorites in college? Give me a break
Great teacher, enthusiastic about what she teaches...
Dr. Shontz is a very good and clear teacher. She is always helpful and there wh
Gotta have respect for people who do this for a living and are excited about it
ornery old bird! Plays favorites, more appropriate for pre-k
Do the work, and do the work right = good grade. Awesome, baby!
a little long winded, but explains well and is enthusiastic.
all test material is from lectures. pay attention and go to lect. good prof
tests are very hard!!! Don't ever know what to study for
A good looking older lady
She is very clear . Doesn't make this an easy A, You have to study for exams!

FUNNY! Another prof could make the material hard-she makes it easy.
Good Prof. Really cares if you understand.First test is hard but it gets easier
She isn't very organized, her tests are very unclear, her tests SUCK!
not a bad teacher. tests suck! never knew what to study. go to lecture!
Had an A until the final. Ended up with a B in the class. Kinda unfair
Strange old lady. tries to be funny. test are very hard, you need to study
keeps your attention through whole lecture, tests are a little difficult
She is awsome. Very good at explaining the labs. She is fun and witty, I would recommend her to anyone for lab.
very nice, helps u out; explains things well; gives you a chance to do well in the class; randomly calls on u to answer questions, which is a good way to stay on top of the info
Tuff class, lots to remember, but I doubt you could find a better instructor. She is one of the reasons GVSU's bio program is as good as it is. In case you didn't know, it is a good program
Tons of new information to learn, but exams were take home, so it was not too bad. GREAT prof.!!
Dr. Shontz is a great prof. I really enjoyed her labs. She was always around to help. She is a very smart and fun lady.
she will take your understanding of genetics and and show you how insanely intricate it really can be. very interesting lectures, but be prepared to wrap your mind around some big ideas. hard work = good grade with her.
You have to study to do really well but it's definitely possible. She kind of turned BIO 112 into a genetics class, but it was very well done.
go to class and pay attention, you will get an A
She's a great prof. Tries to make sure you understand with funny examples. Tests are hard. STUDY!
She is awesome!!! Regardless of her age, she is very-very modern. Great sense of humor, very intelligent, well organized and fair. Highly recommend.
Good lady. If you don't understand something find her and she will help you a lot. She's very friendly and has good examples.
She is a really good Professor! You MUST read your textbook BEFORE class and then sometimes after class just to make sure you get it!
Great teacher and has good examples and pictures to help you understand. Going to class and doing homework problems is a must.
Test are difficult. Most of the students in my class had complaints about unfair test questions. She is a nice lady, and has very clear and decriptive lectures, but tests are very tricky. Not very many A's came out of my genetics class.
Good at explaining material, but tests are aweful...she tries to trick you with her test questions and a lot of people end up with poor grades.Overall, very nice lady, good professor, but tests are really hard.
Do yourself a favor and don't get her as a prof. Her lectures are clear, but when you get to the test, it is impossible. Everyone tries so hard, and still ends up with bad grades. Dont take her...way too difficult!!!
Great teacher and knows how to get the point across. I would take her class anyday
Good prof!! Very good teacher but very hard tests! Knows her stuff, clearly one of GVSU's better biology professors. Read the book, GO TO CLASS, pay attention.
She was a great teacher, used lots of examples and pictures to explain things. She makes things a lot easier than they sound in the book, I didn't even read the thing. Tests are tricky, watch out for them.
She is an awesome professor. I really enjoyed my class with her. I hear alot of complaints about her tests. Yeah, they can be tricky, but then again if you know your stuff you won't have a problem. Take lots of notes and draw alot of picutres and STUDY!!
Go to class everyday, pay attention, and do the homework problems, and you will get a good grade. ps...you don't need the book, EVER!
She's a good teacher and explains things well, but tests..things are worded differently and the small details that she smoothed over in lectures come out to get you! I heard that other profs dont know nearly as much as her and that can suck..
I would avoid her if possible, the lectures are interesting and clear, but the tests SUCK!! Everyone I know studies forever and still does bad.Stuff is worded wierd and they will get you. Very little points available, hard to do well.
Easy class. Tests only from the notes, book not needed. Show up for class and go over your homework and you will do fine. Tests are a worded a little tricky but are generally not difficult.
Don't take the class, tests are way too hard!! The majority of the class will get a C or below on tests. She will put small little details that you talked about in lecture but you would not expect to be on the test. But guess what they are and it sucks!
DON'T BUY THE BOOK. Everything you need to know, she tells you. Class is all tests, so show up and pay attention and you are golden!
I agree no need to buy the book. She is very helpful and good at teaching. But the test are hard as hell and there are only three of them before the final. In my class the average on the test was like 69%. So go figure that one. Even though I have to take the class over because i got a C- she's good
Such a sweet lady. A little nuts, but really fun. I loved the class. She uses a lot of visuals to help teach difficult material. Make sure you go to class and study notes well for tests and class is a breeze. Highly recommended.
Nancy does a good job making you think and keeping the material straight forward. Overall she is a decent prof.,however I did not like the fact she would grill kids during lecture. She means well but putting kids on the spot in front of everyone rubed me the wrong way. Morgan is the man to get.
She was the most incredible teacher I've ever had. She was so clear and stayed on track. As long as you go to class, take good notes and pay attention you can't help but learn from her. She uses wonderful vivid examples in class and is so passionate about what she teaches. Take her, she rocks.
Interesting class. Material is difficult and is covered very quickly. Take good notes and spend a lot of time on the exams and you will do fine.
She is evil! One of the worst teachers I've ever had. I think She hates women, most of us got bad grades. I Studied every night knew all notes and still did horrible. You can quote word 4 word from her lab manuel on an exam and still get the question wrong. Can't reason with or ask question. She get's cranky when proven wrong! She needs to retire.
She's a good teacher, sometimes she can be all over the place. She gives really good hands on examples though. They help a lot. Tests are kind of tricky though.
one of the funniest profs i have had so far... she is really hands on and gets the whole class involved in her examples... uses examples that will really stick in your mind... great prof, i would advise taking her
Very interesting class, sometimes she is nice, sometimes she is a little irritable, when someone tries to prove her wrong. First test is easy, the rest require more studying, but they aren't terrible.
She is a very nice prof. keeps your attension. but her tests are extremly hard. If your not good at science don't take her.
she is such a good professor. even tho sometimes bio HAS to be boring she tries really hard to make it interesting. we definitely got some laughs from the class. the tests are a little hard tho. you can definitely get an A tho.
Super Sexy!!
The material is not easy, but if you show up to class and read the material, you'll be ok. She has no mercy with her exams though... watch out!
Tests are TRICKY!!! No mercy with tests. She can be creative with her lectures though. Go to class and take GOOD notes. Prepare to work hard.
I don't think she liked me, just got that feeling. Screw it, I got an A. Tests were not THAT bad people!!
Crazy!!!
the teacher is really nice..but the tests are rediculous...SOOO hard!! dont take her.
Awesome Professor!!! Exams really aren't that bad, you just have to pay attention, take good notes and read the book. Shontz is so interesting that its easy to pay attention. She has a great personality and is SO funny! I've changed my major to a Genetics emphasis and am taking two more of her classes next semester.
I absolutely love Prof. Shontz! She tries really hard to make the classes interesting, and I actually enjoy going to class! Her tests are a little tricky, but as long as you study, you'll be fine. She goes over everything carefully and gives really good notes, and is sure to make sure everyone understands before moving on the the next topic.
Very hard exams! Not clear on what she wants us to know. Picks on people. Needs to retire. Get out while you can!
Looks the person right below doesn't understand mature humor, and isn't a disciplined student. I studied maybe 2 hours for each exam and still got an A-/B+ average in the class. She knows her stuff and IS funny. I would suggest her to anyone that isn't a complete pessimist.
If you do really well in her class she will like you. If you try really hard, but still struggle she treats you like your stupid. Her class is setup for the average person to struggle through it. The only grades that count are 4 tests. Hopefully your good at taking tests. Get Morgan instead, hes much more personable, and has compassion for students
Her exams are extremely hard. she always post the average grade up and there always D's. She IS funny and teaches in different methods, she tries to explain things well. but you can never be sure whats on the exams. Your whole grade in lecture is based on 3 10pt quizzes and 3 hard ass exams and a final.
I love this lady! She is soo smart! She really cares about her students... she is very clear and dynamic even when her exams are very hard...take her if you really have time to study for this class.... u will learn a ton!
Her lecutres are interesting, but that is the problem. She varies her lectures from what the book has in it frequentley and its difficult to know what is going to be on the exam. Her exams are tough, but she is easy to get a hold of if you need help.
She is awesome. I never liked biology, but I looked forward to going to this class because she made it so interesting! Her tests are not that difficult, you just have to take super good notes, because whatever she says may end up on a test. She is the nicest little lady ever, I definitely recommend her.
She's interested in her students doing well, but easily gets her facts mixed up. On the first test I studied on my own and got an A. Second test, went to see her and ask questions, she gave me different answers than the lecture, and I got a C. She's cute, she's adorable, but I'm more interested in a clear-headed prof than an interesting individual.
Wow..Who wrote she cares about her students? Thats a lie! She embarasses you in front of people, never makes time to help you during her office hours! Makes really rude inappropriate comments when you get the wrong answers in class. If your struggling she helps you out by saying, "you dug yourself a deep hole!" Thanks! I can't stress how little thi
She treats you very nice when your doing good in the class. If you try very hard and still struggle, she has no sympathy at all. She tells you she is too busy to talk during office hours, and many times will embarass you in class. She is not someone who respects students or has compassion for anyone. Get someone else, anyone but her!
Dont waste your TIME or MONEY on her! She is very rude. No compassion for anyone. Her tests and the way she teaches is very hard to follow. She acts like she likes you, but she is very fake. Get Morgan, because he actually cares about students. He also teaches at a level that everyone can understand. Shontz is a real piece of work!
A very funny older lady. can be a little slow at times, but overall very helpful and willing to help students in and outside the cl****room. Hardly uses the textbook.
Excellent class. The problem people have does not fall on Shontz--it's them. Work hard, go to class, get good grades-its quite simple. It's odd that most students in the class are interested in medicine, but decline to work hard. Take her while she is still teaching.
Don't bother buying the book for this class--you won't need it. Showing up to class is ESSENTIAL. Her exams come directly from lecture. If you show up to lecture every day and take good notes, you'll be fine, and you won't need to do too much studying for the exams. She simplifies the material and makes genetics really easy to understand.
Dr. Shontz is a great prof. She is very interactive and likes to use examples to reinforce her teaching. Don't skip class b/c exam material is almost all from her lectures. If you take pay attention and take good notes, this class is no problem.
If you are worried about taking genetics, take Shontz. She is way better than Mathews or Ghiasvand. She does her best to make sure you understand and is open to questions in class. Come to class and ask questions when you need to and you'll do fine.
Shontz is a great teacher. Sometimes it feels life she stupifies things, but her teaching style makes you really learn the material.
Explains the concepts of genetics clearly and makes them easy to understand. Brings in interesting pictures and gives good examples. It's also not necessary to buy the (expensive) book if you have her; all the test material is straight out of lecture.
Shontz is great. She explains genetics in a way that students in an entry level class can understand. Only gives you want you is important and tests are right out of the notes. Don't bother buying the book. Test questions can be tricky so go slow. Definitely take Shontz over the other two nightmare profs.
Cute little old lady. Book is hardly needed. All exam material is covered in notes. Must pay attention and attend every lecture to do well. Exams are a bit tricky, must study more than the night before. She often makes me giggle with her examples. Makes sure you understand and always asks for questions. I would definitely recommend for this class.
Shontz is a GREAT prof! I recommend her for anyone taking bio 120! didnt even need to buy the textbook. tests directly from notes, but not pure memorization. put the time into some studying and you'll do great!
Great teacher! Listening to her lecture is like stumbling across an excellent documentary. She gives lots of examples (and shows gruesome slides) as well as explaining concepts in memorable ways. Don't buy the book unless you plan on missing more than a lecture here and tehre.
Shontz is not the best teacher ever, she is old and teaches like she is old. Don't get me wrong she is a very nice person. The other people say you don't need the text book but that is not true. She teaches the basic concepts but get very in detail like her tests are. She's not a horrible teacher but I would take someone else if you could.
Shontz was great for genetics (BIO 375,) but I wouldn't take anything with her past that. BIO 411 with Shontz is, by far, the most boring, and most difficult class I have taken thus far in college. The grade is based on two take home tests alone, both of which use no prior knowledge from class, but require reading 20 articles. Use Wikipedia
Study, then study some more. Then don't forget to study. Plan on giving up your life for this class. Dr Shontz wants you to learn, but she is very tough. Btw, don't forget to study!!!!
Tough class. The averages on the exams were fairly low. If you are hoping to get a decent grade in her class, you need to give up any life you wanted to have and study your butt off.
She is a very entertaining professor, but she isn't very clear on what to expect on her tests, lots of information thrown at you with little guidance as to how to use it. Wasn't helpful at office hours, seemed like I inconvenienced her, work sheets were helpful but don't rely solely on them. It was just really hard to understand what she wanted
She has no homework just tests, quizzes and exams. I am usually an A student who is good on test and barely passed this class. The class average on her exam was 50% (out of 100 students) and she wondered what WE were doing wrong. lol. My suggestions is unless you already know everything about biology very very very well try to go with someone else
She uses no visual aids and you have to be really good at studying to do well on her tests. I am a bio major, so I liked her. Hi-lite things that are unclear in your notes and go to her office hours. Once I did that, I got A's on her tests. You don't need the book at all, but lectures are MANDATORY.
Don't listen to the people who say shes bad b/c of her low test grades in 120, EVERY PROF HAS LOW TEST GRADES. BIO 120 is a weeder course, and only made to fail people. It is not the prof, it is the class.I had her for both 120 and 355, and got an A in both. Yes I worked hard in 120, and fairly hard in 355. But you don't have to waste your life.
I really think it's funny when people say they are 'usually straight A students' and then rip on a teacher for giving them a bad grade in an intro course. Just b/c you get an A in another subject doesn't mean the prof is bad, you just need to work harder. This isn't high school idiots. Straight A's without working hard is for high school
She is tough, you need to attend every class because her exams are everything she speaks about in class. Her exams are fill in the blank so know almost every definition. She only gives 2 chances for extra credit so attend each class if possible. Dont need book! Try for another prof.
It is sad that she is retired. One of the best teachers I have had. Teaching style is 'real world'. Best be in class and ready to answer material. If this intimidates you, maybe think about career path you are following. You will be required to think on your feet! Great preparation in this class.
=( She's retiring. Wish she wasn't. It was a privilege to have her! You will never meet someone with her knowledge level, but has a lot of common sense!
One of the best professors I have had in long college experience. Sad she is retired. Taught using Socratic method. Wish more professors used this style. If you are headed in the medical fields, better get used to it!
