What Students Say
“Worst class ever, extremely disorganized professor, accused me of plagiarizing the constitution like how does that make sense”
HIST270 - 1.0 rating“Absolutely disregards the needs of students, blame shifts when testing material doesn't look the same as she gives us to study off of (not that she gives much help), and has an expectation far greater then any class I have ever taken as a senior in college”

She gives alot of pointless busywork, and sometimes coming to her class can be a chore. However she can be a fairly easy grader on the essays.
The worst teacher I have had at CSUN. Gives needless work, is very unorganized. An all around bad teacher. Not to mention she looks like a witch.
Complete ditz. I still can't figure out what happoned in her class last semester. If I could have my 3 hours a week back I would.
If you enjoy coming to class to hear pointless lectures that are a waste of everyone's time, then I reccomend her highly. She also deducts points from your grade for every class that you miss, reguardless of what the reason is for your absence.
very easy going professor, and bases all the exams according to her lectures. i took her class, never bought a single book, and recieved an A-.
Very sweet woman but so very disorganized. Her lectures meandered, seemed oddly focused and hard to follow and were made worse by being essentially compulsory (dropping points for 2 or more absences.) The exams were quite reasonable.
The way that she approaches the class is not well enough organized to keep the class interesting and does not seem to understand that her whole class is failing.
She is very sweet and as long as you do your work and read it's a easy class to pass. People just need to get to know her.
I fall asleep in her class every day, that should say something. She is pretty unorganized. Her study sheets for exams are NOTHING what is really on the test. Just take notes and study the notes. Her papers are pretty easy and she lets you resubmit them for better grades. She's not interesting.
Prof. Yamane was soooo interesting. Stoked my interest in Women's History to the max. Wish I had her for more classes. She's not hard, but not easy either. Take her classes if you can.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! You would have to be stupid to take her. Worst teacher ever. Her lectures ramble on about nothing and her exams are impossiblto get a good grade on, since her study guides are worthless. This class was a waste of my time.
She is a very nice lady, but her disorganization drives her entire class nuts. You are always having to wait a long time to receive important papers back, such as your rough draft, for your research paper. I would take her again, but not in a class that involves a heavy duty research assignment.
Very nice lady but unorganized. Probably because she teached six classes. To much work also. We had 25 assignments beside the main paper and those assignments took time away from much needed research.
She is a vey nice person, but she gave a lot of assignments that were not related to the reasearch paper. Her lectures were pointless because they were not related to your research.
MY FAVORITE PROF! I took her for women's history, ind. study, Cal. History, & my proseminar. Is she disorganizaed, yes. But just go to her office hours & things get worked out. She wants to help. I got A's in all the courses. Just go to class & study and you'll be fine. Made history & research fun!
Very unorganized and very unclear. Her thinking is very scattered as are her assignments. But a fun lady to talk with!
if you want to feel like your back in high school with tedious worksheet assignments every week this class is for you. her lectures are pointless because it doesnt help at all with her exams. so theres really no point of coming to class HOWEVER she takes roll everyday which counts against you.
I hate this teacher!! She gave the class assignments that had nothing to do with the test. Can't teach for nothing... The whole class complaint about her and she basically told us to "shut up". Gives a lot of stupid assignents... this class took a lot of my time.
An understanding professor. She truly cares for her students and wishes them to learn. The course is demanding, a lot of busywork but she is always willing to help.
Assigns too much busy work that gets in the way of writing and researching the 15 page paper you are expected to write. She's VERY helpful and really cares about her students and genuinely wants them to succeed.
Although she is one of the more nicer professors to take in the History Dept., she is also one of the more disorganized. It takes a while for her to respond to e-mails, and your work for the class such as papers and exams, takes her a long time to grade. Also at end of the semester, she starts to rush her lectures to try to catch up.
Easy A if you go through the motions and turn in work on time
It's hard, but kind of easy at the same time.
toooooooo much reading!
She is a very nice woman, however, the class was pretty hard. She never went over any goegraphy, yet we were expected to know it on the test! And it was worth the most amount of points! There are homework assignments almost every week, and they take forever to complete!
Very sweet lady. Class it's self isn't very hard, make sure you read and attend though, because attendance DOES count.
There is a lot of reading. You definately need to go to class though. She counts participation points not by how much you participate, but how much you come. I got A's on most everything and ended up with a C+ because I never went. Attendence is worth 60 out of 300 pts so make sure you go!
dr yamane is hot! i loved her class...i never knew so much stuff about women before! her lectures were cool, attend class, and talk to her and you'll do great. highly reccommend!
The Prof. is bad! She gives you useless assingments every week that take FOREVER! There's tons of reading and you have to guess at what info she wants from it. At the end she rushes everything to catch up. Then there is still a research paper that she is totally vague on. Ended up failing me even though I had a dr's note, gonna fight it but still!
Dr. Yamane gives you alot to read. She is very helpful in your research paper. She gives you assignment that are useless. She is always available incase you need her help. The midterm is easy. BUT make sure you attend class!
I think that Dr. Yamane is the best history professor I have ever had. Her instructions as to how to do a history paper was super clear and I got an A. I highly recommend her class.
She gives too much homework that is busy useless info. Websites where info is hard to find. A rediculous amount of reading. Having you memorize a mass amount of areas on maps that you will forget a week later, instead of narrowing things down and giving pertenant importance to things & areas that will be retained. Hated this class.
If you have any other classes there is no way that you can keep up with the assigned reading. The curriculum is all over the place so it's hard put everything together and actually understand California history. Dr. Yamane herself is nice, though.
She is an extremely nice woman. She does not seem to be at first, but go and talk to her during office hours. She is very helpful, and will even help in other classes. The class is difficult, but keep track of assignments and don't play catch up, it is hard to catch up! She ROCKS!!!
Yamane is just a cool hippie chick from Northern Cal. Sure the class is difficult, what do you want, it spoon fed to ya?! Get over it and buck up little campers..she is very nice and loves the subject she teaches. She knows its alot and grades accordingly. She likes to hear your opinions. Write from the heart, insert facts and you'll do fine!
Professor Yamane is an excellent teacher. She does give out a lot of reading and does take attendance very seriously but she is a fair grader and is extremely helpful. I would recommend.
I have mixed feelings...I feel that a lot of her assignments were useless, and she should have given us more time on our research papers. However, she is extremely nice and understanding if you fall behind. She cares about her students and wants them to succeede. I WILL take her for another class and I DO recommend her.
Dr. Yamane is a really great teacher. She is more than willing to work with ANYBODY even the kids that show only show up to class for the last three weeks and then wonder why they have bad grades. She taught me a lot in the ways of research and planning. Still, she's not easy. If you want to do well, she will work with you to make sure you do.
Yamane is one of the few teachers who really care about their students. She will help you in any way possible. She can be a bit scatter brained but bear with her. I must say that she seems to be better in Hist 417 because she is so passionate about it. In California History she kinda gets a bad rap for being vague about the worksheets.
She is really helpful, willing to work with you and she has interesting lectures. Also her tests are easy, and her essays are broad. She gives you the questions before hand. Also she is not a hard grader
A very unorganized instructor. Assigns a lot of unnecessary reading. Her study guides are no help. Couldn't wait for the class to be over.
HARD CLASS CRAYZY TEACHER
She requires you to read 5 books plus a presentation and ten page paper in her class. She then quizzes you in each book to see if you've read it and not generous at all with the grading. I feel like is a huge workload for just one class. She acts as if this is the only class you're taking and have no life outside of school. Don't take her!!!!
Dr. Yamane is a nice woman but she really doesn't have a clue about what is going on. As a working student, she expects way too much out of her students. When it comes to your research paper, be prepard to lose sleep and still be critisized over it. She gives you meaningless assignmets that she claims are the most important parts of your paper.BAD!
Alot of useless reading, but you do not have to them as long as you pay attention to lecture. Her tests are joke, just follow the guideline, you'll get an A. Matching - Lecture, Geography - Memorize, Essay - summury of textbook = gg. Make sure you show up for her class, cuz she takes an attendance and it is part of ur participation grade.
a very nice lady, but she is WAY out there!!!! She likes to jump topic to topic. Her lectures are pointless, they have nothing to do with the test. She does give study guide. She gives WAY to much homework but if your class complains she will shorten it. You will have one 10 page paper due at the end of the semester.BE PREPARD TO READ AND MEMORIZE!
I think people don't give her enough credit. Yes the class was hard, and yes she is a little out there. However, I learned A LOT more than I thought I would about CA history. I struggled in the class, but I received an A. If you do all the work and pay attention you will do fine. The class seems more difficult in the beginning than it is.
If you are a working student do not take. If you are a student who can spend a few hours each week to finish an assignment then I guess she is okay. A lot of busy work that does not have much meaning.
i liked her, very funny and spontaneous... i agree that the assignments were tedious, but none the less, they are do-able
This is the most scatter-brained teacher ever! So much work that it is hard to keep up, alot of reading, she doesn't make sense. I was very frusturated with her class. Half of the class dropped out. If you can find another teacher, you should do it. This was one of the most difficult classes I have taken in my 4 years at CSUN.
assaignments are long, but they help out because the midterm and final revolve on all 9 assignments, she give you chnaces o get extra credit plus shes nice enought to let you turn late work in with little deduction.i enjoyed her class and im not a history major. she can be a little hard to follow but just bare with it, it helps at the end.
She is a great professor. I'm no history major but if you come to class trying to learn and give your best effort this class is cake. Her exams consist of 50% multiple choice and 50% on essay questions. Essay questions make the exam easy and the multiple choice are hard. She does not weigh the grades heavily which is why it is easy to pass the clas
i barely started the class and i hate her already! the workload in this class is RIDICULOUS. if you've ever taken Gateway...the busy work in that class is equivalent (if not MORE) for her class!!! beware. if AT ALL possible TAKE SOMEONE ELSE. ANYONE ELSE!
unorganized, spacy, forgetful, nice, calm, helpful, attendance a must,1+hr/nite reading 7/days wk,1+hr/4nites essay writing or other projects. 90%pointless material but writing important to her. Don't ever expect to get papers back from her-make your own copies. You will love her style or hate her style.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had CSUN. AVOID! She is the most disorganized teacher. NEVER starts class on time, and ALWAYS runs over. Hands out assignments late, and then expects you to rush to finish. Plus, she never returns papers/tests on time. A LOT of pointless reading. Poor lectures. Won't let you get up in class to use bathroom.
I dont kno what you are all talking about. This was not a hard class. She tells you exactly what is going to be on the quizes and tests, all you have to do is study. You guy are in a university so get used to it! She was not a hard teacher. I just find her a bit annoying because she talks like shes in the library, very low tone
Great teacher. She is very passionate about History and wants to pass that on to her students. Very helpful and her notes are straight forward. A lot of reading though. I would take another class with her.
OK - this was a seminar on institutions. There was too much reading for this course(200 pgs a week), since we were requiered to have proposal, research and draft handed in so early. We never had time to do the research. I would take her agian though. You have to be ready to deal with an absent minded instructor..
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. i had HIGH stress this past semester because of THIS class. workload is TOO much AND pointless. PAPERS EVERY WEEK. just lookin' out...so beware OR be prepared. (not worth it, take someone else...REALLY). hated coming to this class! oh but if you decide to take her, use the restroom BEFORE
Very dedicated, very interested in students, knows her subject matter; amazingly forgiving of lunkheads, probably because she is a parent; expects undergrads to be able to read and write, which explains some of these ratings. She will teach you how to write a professional academic paper in a dozen easy steps, which is the point of the class.
Yamane can be crazy sometimes but she is a cool gal. She helps students that are engaged in thier work. Yamane also lets you catch up if you are falling behind. She is not scary or mean, just a little disorganized. She gave me a B+ which was actually not bad since i did not care too much as an undergrad.
I think Professor Yamane gets a bad rap. Yes, she is a bit disorganized. However, she is very helpful and WANTS your to succeed. I really couldn't have gotten the grade I did without her help. Be sure to talk to her regarding any problems. She is always there to help.
She is the best professor at CSUN, really cares about the students, bends over backwards to help students succeed, and she will give you an extension if you ask. If you read the material, use critical thinking, turn in the work, and you'll get an A. Best teacher I ever had!
Professor Yamane is a pretty good professor. Lot of reading and long homework due every week. Lectures long and make sure you duse the restroom before going to class. Helpful and open to help with assignments. Respones fast to emails. Easy A.
She's a very nice woman and means well but is honestly not very talented as a professor. It's difficult to understand her lectures or pick out the main points. There's also a lot of reading assigned that's rarely talked about or actually explained, just quizzed on.
this prof. is strange. She assigns tons of reading, her lectures are all over the place, and when she does power pt. presentations she seems lost. Her tests were easy because she posts up the study guide. Very boring class...don't use the bathroom during class she FREAKS about that. She is a nice lady but is a horrible instructor.
She is great for 301. She is there for you and lets you do your own topic. If you turn in her busy work on time she will like you. I recommend her.
Do not take this class for an upper division GE. I had to take it because I signed up late. It's a lot of work, there are much easier GEs you could take. Make sure you use many examples from reading and lecture on her essays. You lose points if you miss too many classes, but she is pretty accommodating with late assignments.
Ymane, is one of the most caring professors ever. If you ask for an extension or help she is there for you. She expects you to read and participate in discussion, you don't have to do it every time, she just wants to know that you are thinking about the topic and if you add to what someone else has said.
I took her online class over the summer for US hist. I HATE history, but she made it tolerable. Additionally, she was the only professor I had willing to work with me and my pregnancy. When I gave birth during the last week of class, she told me not to worry about the last assign or final. She really cares about her students.
I adore Nay! Felt like she was plugged in to me as an individual student. Sometimes it isn't easy to understand her methods, but they serve an important purpose. Would take other courses with her if available.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She is very boring, makes you get 4 books. She doesn't go in any form of order. She goes on and on about useless stuff. Assigns a paper but doesn't give you the guidelines for the it until a week before its due. Horrible class
If you don't like to work on your own don't take her classes. Her directions are contradictory or non-existent. There are large amounts of busy work that are not clearly explained how they relate to the goals of the class. She is disorganized and does not return work in time for it to be constructive in writing your paper.
The professor gave alot of busy work, but if you do the work, you will get a good grade. She is also helpful if you go to her office hours and will walk you through things in you ask. But she is very soft spoken and sometimes have to focus on the lecture.
She thinks that her class is the only one you are taking with the amount of insane work she has you do. So if you are only taking one class- sure, take it, but especially if your not a history major- STAY AWAY!! so much work and studying.
Curriculum similar to high school class. There is A LOT of busy work. Four reading quizzes each worth only 3.75% of your final grade yet it consists of 18 documents (20+ pages) and chapters from textbook. Questions chosen at random- you do not have a choice which to choose. (3) 5 page papers worth only 6% each.I do not recommend-look elsewhere
Can't stick to one website so you don't know which site to follow to the point where I don't know where the review for the final is?! Crazy amount of work, the kind you would do to get your mb in history... For those saying you will get a good grade of you get the work done: I did my very best to write my papers and still got graded very poorly!
She is very disorganized and unclear. Her grading system is incomprehensible. Her directions are contradicting. There are large amounts of useless busy work.
This class was easy, though, I seem to be one of the only people who thought so. I got A's and B's on all tests and quizes and rarely ever cracked open the book, though most people in class I noticed did poorly. Ended up getting a B+ without much effort. She's very helpful but a little disorganized. Would take another course with her though.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR!
This professor assigns more busy work than any other professor at CSUN. Her lectures are unclear, and feel very drawn out. Even if you pass her class, at the end you feel like you didn't get anything out of it. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
Professor Yamane is one of the best professors, she knows her history and is up to date on issues. Very pleasant to talk to unlike other professors. She does give alot of work and you have to be a good writer but she will help you, great class if you're serious about grad studies in the future. Take her if you' re willing to write and research.
Do NOT take if you are not a history major. Let me preface this by saying that I am going on to graduate school (not in History) and I am used to lots of reading and writing. But this class is RIDICULOUS with the amount of reading she has you do. If I set aside three hours of reading a day just for this class, I still do not get it done. AVOID.
Rambles about insignificant facts. Completely disorganized. Gives tons of busy work for little credit. I read 700 pages of 2 books for 3.75% credit. Not good about getting back your test/papers. I was excited about the subject but now cannot wait till the semester is over and this is coming from and A/B student. Ugh! will never take again!
Awesome professor really cares about her students, unlike older professors at CSUN she is up to date and opened to all views not close minded.
She is unorganized, but she is a very understanding professor. If you have a problem, do not wait until the end of the semester. Tell her before hand. I had issues and she helped me along this semester. She is very good with seminar classes (very engaging) and she has a sense of humor. But watch out, she is kooky.
Rough class...attend and take good notes. She is very excited about the topic so she goes off on tangents. I really only used 2 of the 5 textbooks she asked us to have. Nice, but not my favorite class.
It's History so it isn't the most fascinating subject ever. She's pretty clear in what she expects on the essays for the 2 quizzes, midterm, and final. If you're a good writer, you'll do great on the quizzes but you MUST read the book for the matching sections of the exams. TA's are HARSH in grading the term papers though.:( Good grade is doable.
The hardest class i have ever taken. I do not recommend this class to anyone who does not like hundreds of pages of reading and long nights of studying. Despite this Yamane is a very nice professor she is very knowledgeable and interested in this subject.
Without a doubt one of the worst classes I've taken at CSUN. The amount of work she expects out of you is flat out ridiculous. Required reading for quizes is over 1000 pages! I had to put in more time for this class than all my other classes combined for the semester. Just ridiculous. Avoid if you can.
Yamane is one of the best, I do admit she makes you read alot. If you do take her be ready to read, but she is helpful and will answer any questions you have. Same with writing she will guide you if you go to her office, she is one of the nicest at CSUN and cares for her students.
A pretty tolerable class, even though having it for three hours was hard at times. As long as you read the assigned books, you'll do well on the papers which are relatively easy in the first place. She allows for a lot of subjectivity which is nice, and is very open and available to all students who want to discuss the course with her.
I took the Saturday class, it was long and you must pay attention to the power point and take notes. There are quizzes and test, but she gives you the question ahead of time and you must do them in order to get an A or B. She is open to the class but for students who aren't interested in history, try to pay attention!!
Class is pretty tough (mainly the readings.) If you're a very busy person and don't have much time to finish a lengthy novel in a short period of time AVOID. If you have a passion for American history you'll enjoy the readings, if not then search for a different class. Some of the books are really BORING. Shes interesting but disorganized.
Alright professor. Very disorganized, but knows what she is teaching. Makes you read 4 different books plus the text, bs'd on the quizzes and got A and B's. Very easy class, 5 quizzes, 2 midterm exams, and an essay.
She is unorganized and will add assignments as the semester goes on. In addition, the class is alot of work. She is slow with returning assignments, and can be a hard grader at times. Despite this I love her class, and I have taken her 3 times. I would take her a fourth if I could. Awesome person to talk to and very understanding. Helps with assign
One of the worst professors I have ever had!!!! Going into the final I knew only one grade from the class. Every time I asked her for my grades she would make up an excuse as to why she didn't have it. Having my finished work graded is her JOB! I went to take a makeup test and she couldn't find it. At first she had me take the wrong test. Her lectures are boring and do not help for the tests. She expects you already know material without teaching you. She is VERY unorganized. Do NOT take her!!!!
Yamane is always available and wants to help you. However, she tends to go off on tangents and can be incredibly confusing, that's why it is necessary to WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN for it might be on the midterm or final. There were 5 books reviews, 5 pages long. I didn't buy the books, look online or get them from your local library. Fairly easy class
Great professor to say the least. She opened up my mind to have an appreciation for history. Anybody who complains that there is too much work ect. is not fit for a COLLEGE course. Take her if you want to learn and widen your knowledge about the history of america and the effects we have caused around the world. I would take her again no doubt.
Take a class with her if you: 1. never want your assignments graded on time. 2. don't want easy to follow lectures. 3. Love listening to ongoing random rants 4. Want feed back in timely matter. 5. want your grade submitted late so your diploma is delayed. :) 6.enjoy getting flaked on for appointments discussing grades/lack of grades of assignments.
The most unorganized teacher I've ever had. I don't say these things to be mean but I do not recommend her. She doesnt like to answer questions and gets irritated fast. The assignments arent clear as to what she wants to be done. All she does is ramble on to where you are not interested anymore she is not active and energetic.
I took the 3 hour Saturday class. While she is nice, she misgraded one of my quizzes and never fixed it in the gradebook. Lectures were long and boring and the reading is dreadful. Quizzes accompany the reading. Be ready to see a lot of what you didn't talk about on the test's multiple choice section
Let's just get this out of the way. Prof Yamane is one disorganized woman. However, she gives thought-provoking assignments. I have a new found appreciation for history now. She really does read over your work and gives constructive criticism as well as points out your strengths. Midterms worth most pts, so work hard on those! Tests are easy!
Worst professor I have ever had. Her lectures are mostly random rants. She is very unclear about what she wants on assignments and grades inconsistently. Her class is very unstructured and boring (and this is coming from someone who loves school and has accumulative GPA 3.8)
One of the worst classes I've ever taken at CSUN. She takes attendance at the beginning and second half of class when it isn't part of the grading process. She takes forever to grade, she took a month us our first exam back. On top of that she repeatedly tells the class to hush when no one is talking...
do.NOT.take.her! WORST professor ever. She NEVER returned or gave us feedback on our paper that we turned in in March (school's out now). Her lectures focus on POINTLESS minor details (a president's favorite food, quotes from movies, etc.). Her exams are based on her lectures, and you need to MEMORIZE maps-so POINTLESS (I forgot everything now).ugh
Yes, she does expose you different types of historical work. But she is so unclear as to what is expected for assignments. Accumulates work turned in and expects the paper to have revisions when you don't have her feedback. Considering all of this she's a tough grader. Does not answer emails in a timely manner. Overall very confusing.
A lot of reading but it is interesting. Dr. Yamane assigns five books, three quizzes, discussions, and two midterms. Overall a interesting class if you want to know more about the Gilded Age. Just keep up with the reading and the rest is a walk in the park.
She is a bit scatter brained and is a pretty tough grader but she DOES want the best for her students. She turns in grades late but she puts a lot into her corrections and will work with you to improve and to pass. Do your best and dont give up. Go to her office hours and it will not go unnoticed. She will do right by you.
She is an incredible professor and I have learned so much from her. No, she is not EASY, but you will actually walk away from her classes a greater writer and historian. Plus, she is probably the kindest professor I have ever had, always willing to give you extra time if you needed it. Take Yamane!!!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. Do not take, she is so unorganized and never returns papers back... ever. She would hush the class when it was.. granted maybe 2 people talking. She assigns 200 pages of reading a week. Her tests are based on lectures, and requires you to memorize numerous maps. Seriously. DO NOT TAKE HER.
PROS: Provides study guides and really gives clear instructions and expectations. Always welcomes questions and feedback and is available to help. CONS: A lot of reading, but this is college. Tests are really intense and include 1-2 full essays, matching questions, and a lot of geography identification. The last part is the toughest part.
This class consists of 3 book reviews, 2 midterms, and one essay(5-7 pages) based on the free speech movement and the new right. There is also 4 quizzes based on the readings. Overall, the class may seem more like a political science course, however, the class is interesting. Make sure to use the writing lab before submitting the book reviews.
I like Dr. Yamane, but she does have her flaws. This class could have been better. She is very disorganized as a teacher and with this class. This class consisted of a 20 page research paper and other pointless readings and writings that had nothing to do with the research paper. I wish she solely focused on the research paper for this class.
I'm sitting here approaching midnight on Saturday night finishing my weekly 150+ assigned reading, wondering why this tyrant of a professor fails to understand most students are taking several other classes, working, or busy with any other responsibilities. Heed others advice--if you have a busy schedule, please don't take this class.
Definitely one of the harder history classes I've ever taken. You're expected to read about 1/2 of a decent-sized book every week (between documents, textbook, and extra reading). Best heads up is to google "yamasun" and look at the first link that comes up. She puts most of her stuff there. Also, don't underestimate office hours.
A bit disorganized, but is clear on what she wants for the quizzes.
Best history teacher I've ever had. Yes she is tough & makes you read a lot, but this is college!!!! I have taken her several times & have 2 classes w her next semester. Just take good notes in class & skim the reading & you will do fine! I've only gotten As in her classes. She knows a lot & gives great feedback. She will make you a better writer!
She is okay. History 301 is just a hard class no matter who you take it with. She assigns about a paper a week for the first half of the class, which are meant to help you prepare for the final paper. Also make sure you read the book because she gives a test on the entire thing. Our final paper was based on the progressive and gilded eras.
Boring and I learned nothing this entire semester. For the final, she gave us 15 essay prompts in which she expected us to write 2-3 pages per prompt and for the actual final she would choose ONE of those prompts as a question (plus 100 matching q's). Her quizzes were same format and not worth enough points for all the assignments she assigned.
She is very disorganized.
She has side notes of all presentations and you will be expected to take good notes and review notes for the "quizzes". All the quizzes were on the book, extra reading she gives you, and what is discussed in class. Memorize the study guides and you should be fine.
Dr Yamane is reliably knowledgeable about California history, her specialty. I took her over summer and it was a 400-series upper division class and I had to work very hard for the "A" I earned. She is tough, but there are things from her class I will never forget.
Worst class ever, extremely disorganized professor, accused me of plagiarizing the constitution like how does that make sense
This was the 1st semester of my last year at CSUN. I have never had a teacher so unorganized, unclear, and never responded to her e-mails. She wanted her essays written in a very specific way but was not clear on the instruction. No body had any clue what to study for the tests. I learned I passed the class 3 weeks after grades were due.
Awful just awful. She's unorganized and not helpful. Her class is designed to make you struggle and when you ask for help she isn't of help at all! The. worst. I would say take someone else but she's the only option.
Lots of reading, do it or else you wont be able to pass the reading quizzes given. Same for exams. She isnt very strict but she does request you keep your phones put away. If taking the three hour class, she always manages a fifteen minute break in between which is considerate. Usually puts a film on the second half of the class.
THE worst class i have ever taken in my life. College AND high school. She is extremely unorganized, will never respond to your emails no matter how many times you contact her, and then if you even try to ask her questions she will go on and on about a different subject to the point that you will forget what you asked her. Dont take her!!!!!!!!!!!
Entire class is on Powerpoint, I took her for a 2+ hour class and there was always a break in the middle for people to leave. For the exams and test's she always tells you the questions before the test so you know what to read or write about. 2 Papers during the course. Very easy class but just not entertaining and very sleepy.
She had us reading from three different books as well as additional readings online that range from 10 to 70 pages. She gave very vague criteria for the essays, but she gave us the reading quiz and midterm questions beforehand which helped a lShe doesnt update canvas so you wont know your grade.
I didn't do the reading until she handed out the study guides. Do them and you'll pass. The only thing I didn't like was that each test/quiz had essay questions. The quizzes are two mini essays and the midterm/ final had two full essays (both handwritten), which annoyed me. She gave us 2 essay assignments that were long with confusing instructions
She's nice but that's about it. Her lectures are very old school and she makes her students read 4 text books at once with many reading quizzes. This is a GE class and most of us aren't history majors. 4 textbooks? Also, her lectures are basically her showing one or two pictures on a slide and talking about them for an hour. This should not be a GE
Vague with what she wants. Contradicts herself with what she says vs how she grades it. Gives study guide couple days before quiz/exam with 10-12 essay questions from hundreds of pages of reading, you have to remember many specific examples for in class essays . She picks 2 and No open notes. This class is a NIGHTMARE. PLEASE AVOID FOR YOUR SANITY!
She is completely unorganized and inconsiderate of the well being of her students. Absolutely disregards the needs of students, blame shifts when testing material doesn't look the same as she gives us to study off of (not that she gives much help), and has an expectation far greater then any class I have ever taken as a senior in college. Run.
I wish I could give her a 0 bc she is the worst professor ever. The amount of work she assigns is UNREALISTIC! She expects you to be able to write everything you read in verbatim You can't use any tech in this class or she'll think you're not paying attn. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS She is so unsupportive. CSUN let her go so other students don't suffer!
Just avoid. The most unorganized, unprofessional professor I've ever dealt with. Unrealistic reading expectations and a horrendous test system. Just do yourself a favor and avoid her. Also, if anyone from the administration of CSUN is seeing this.... LET HER GO!
Like the previous reviews, I wish I could give her a 0. She's so inconsiderate and always tells off students using computers. She assigns crazy amounts of reading. She assigned a term paper without a prompt, she sends her study guide two days before the test. CSUN should sincerely watch her more carefully. Her class, 488, is a joke.
Professor Yamane is a nice person who is passionate about California history, but she should not be a professor. She is disorganized and it shows in her presentations. If you're a fast typer, type out the lectures (what she says verbatim as much as you can) because this truly helps when it comes to writing papers. She never responds to emails.
She doesnt use a textbook nor canvas. She assigns a lot of reading and papers. The tests are very hard. She insists on using chicago formatting and is unforgiving when you make mistakes on papers. Her website is god awful especially since its her only resource. I was so sure that I was gonna get a D but I ended up with a B
I will never take her again. She is extremely unorganized, absent-minded, and, careless!
She is a nice lady, but is very scatter brained. She spends so much time on her lectures, but doesn't take the time to see if her students are actually comprehending the material. Makes you read so much. She is such a tough grader when it comes to essays, but gives very little feedback. Unorganized. She also took forever to put final grades in.
I took this class for the spring, it was hard enough attending her class where I didn't understand a single thing she went on talking about. Making connections with her life but confused us a whole lot more. The coronavirus pandemic went on and we went online it was even more difficult. She is scattered everywhere, not organized at all. DON'T TAKE!
I honestly don't know how CSUN is still letting her teach at this point. Probably the worst professor I have ever taken in my life. She is extremely disorganized, confusing and never emails you back. We are literally in a pandemic and she won't answer emails and takes forever to grade. If you can please avoid this headache of a class.
Please save yourself the headache and DO NOT take her class! This was a Friday class at 2pm which already made it dreadful but with a professor as bad as her it was a nightmare! Very UNORGANIZED, does not respond to emails, does not grade until basically the end of the semester. Gives you 50+ pages to read a week from two separate books. Horrible!!
Avoid this professor at all costs. Her lectures are hard to follow, her powerpoints are useless, she's extremely unorganized, and she's no help whatsoever because she never responds to emails. We didn't get any papers back until May. The department chair and the associate dean to intervene because we were so frustrated. She shouldn't be a professor
What I found ironic is that this is a course for future California educators, and professor Yamanes class is a textbook definition of what we should NOT do. So I guess in that way it was educational. Other than that, I cant say I learned much. Our class spent most of the semester trying to get her to answer emails and give us our grades.
if you miss class wont help you to catch up no recap and dosent record lectures
Canvas page is a mess, Lectures often felt like rambling with some content sprinkled in, forgot to post links for multiple assignments, and got little to no feedback for said assignments. Please for the love of all that is holy, save yourself from this atrocity.
From day 1 it's a mess and it won't get better. Sem. started with 140 ppl and only about 40 left now. Never responds to emails, doesn't post turn it in links on time or posts them very late, never answers your questions, lectures are a rambling mess, instructions always unclear, pointless assignments/readings, doesn't grade on time if ever.
The bad reviews makes me sad because Prof Yamane is nice & understanding! I had her during the pandemic; she had powerpoints. Lots of readings, but that's a typical history class. Quizzes were questions on the readings, and 2 papers on topic of your choice. I think tech overwhelmed her a bit, but she's was not a tough grader. Read & show effort:)
Whatever you do, DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Disorganized. Rambles. Weeks of waiting before papers are graded. No follow through.
Prof. Yamane is a very nice person, but this class + canvas page was so extremely unorganized. She never EVER put in grades and when she did they were all out of 0 and not aligned with the syllabus. Just a mess Avoid this prof
Lectures from slides, but they don't help with homework or midterms. You have bi-weekly homework which ends up being 4 pages long and make up your grade. The professor is a good person, but teaching online is not her thing. She rarely responds to emails, but does have office hours and a TA who helps. Takes time to get used to, but not impossible.
2 and 1/2 hour lecture heavy class. Prof. Yamane rambles a lot and has a hard time making anything make sense. Last 30 minutes of class is always q&a time bc she is never clear on instructions. Forgets to upload materials, and never grades on time. Started with 175 students, ended with 35.
Nice lady, but rambles about stuff that doesn't matter. Not very clear about what she wants. There were so many essays to write and A LOT of reading material. Avoid at all costs.
She is a nice person but probably one of the worst classes i have ever taken in school. Her lectures did not help whatsoever with homework and midterms. When she is grading your homework she deducts points for every little thing and her assignments are unclear. Her prompt does not help because you do what she asks but it is not enough. DO NOT TAKE!
This class started off online then went in person, I would not reccomend taking an online class with her. Lots of reading but you can get away with not reading, 1 presentation, 1 paper, 2 Midterms, 4 reading quizzes. She is all over the place sometimes which can be frustrating but she is very understanding and will give extensions if needed.
This was the most boring class in my entire academic career. The professor is incredibly nice and understanding but the structure of the class was very poorly thought out. You have to read like 5 things at any given moment and these are LONG readings, mind you. She tries to get you to participate in every class meeting. Pick a different class.
She is a tough lady. However, knowledgeable of the subject area she teaches. Be ready to read quite a bit, and the papers and quizzes are the majority of your grade. Attendance is not mandatory. TAKE NOTES, NOTES... if you do the work it does pay off.
