She is very concise. Her expectations are clear. She is super nice and makes sure that everybody is following what she is teaching.
Great teacher. Very helpful and makes the class and tests easy. Knows her subject.
Really cares about students.
Great teacher. Take her if you get the chance
Covers material thouroughly and straight out of the book. Exams are easy - questions come from the book as well. Class projects use excel and take minimal time. Nice lady, really cares about her students.
Awesome Teacher!
very good econ class, great teacher, she really helps u out. if u know your calculus u should get an A. but if u dont u might have to settle for a B.
realy a nice teacher...perfect understanding of her subject.will do anythin to help her students..subject was difficult but her understanding will help you out.great teacher..take her
Dr. Dasgupta is an incredibly nice and caring professor. She wants her students to suceed and does everything she can to enable us to do well. The class is pretty easy, if you study the packets she hands out you are guarenteed to ace the exams.
Also had her for Stat 351. One of the worst teachers I've ever had. Sooooo boring. Repeats herself over and over again in broken english. So boring I couldn't go to class for fear of hurting myself. If you can stand the boredom it's easy because you don't learn anything all semester. Not helpful
Shes nice but her voice is so annoying it makes me want to stab myself. If I hear "is it clear" one more time I'll go nuts.
worst teacher ever!
I can't stand the ways she emphasize on asking the class if what she says is clear. I hate how she makes it quite intimidating about exams coming up. I don't think her exams are easy. Multiple choices aren't my thing. take at your risk.
Too many haters on this site. Dasgupta is wonderful! Repetitive- but wonderful. She likes to make sure everything is clear for her students, and is reasonable with dropping grades/ curving. I had her for econ 101 and stat 351( a boring class no matter who teaches it) and highly recommend her.
This class really isn't that bad if you have a little tolerance. Yes she repeatedly askes if things are clear, but would you rather things be unclear and the professor just move on? Exams come straight from the packets she hands out, never touched the book.
The best teacher I have ever had my entire school life. She is very helpful and make sure every student understands the topic. Best of all, she has sense of humor. If I will be a teacher, I would try hard to be like her. Got C on her class.
Extremely easy class when I took it (Fall 2003) but I hear it has gotten harder. We had 6 MC/T&F exams that were directly from the study guide, which she gave us the answers to, and she dropped the lowest 2, how much more could she do to hand us an A! Dasgupta is one of the nicest teachers at UMBC, she makes sure students understand, appropachable.
The tests are all from the packets. THE TESTS ARE ALL FROM THE PACKETS! What more could you want??!! The packets have answers on the back. She explains everything obsessively (just prepare yourself to say "yes" repeatedly to her "Is it clear"). Sit back and relax...understand and do the packets, and get an A. She drops the two lowest exams as well.
SHE IS A WONDERFUL TEACHER... yeah she has broken english but you can still understand her. Test are easy and studying old exams helps ALOT! Take her if you want an A or B.
the nicest teacher ever. U will easily get an A if u even try a little bit. "is it clear". haha...u just have to get used to that :) don't buy the book for this class..u won't use it..just study the packets and attend class.
i don't know wat the other person is talkin about....she is the BEST teacher ever. says "is it clear" alot and wears the same 3 outfits over and over, and has an indian accent, but still underdstandable, but does that really matter...wat matters is that she makes sure u understand everything and is very reasonable and her exams are easy. Easy A.
this class was rediculously easy. all exams are questions from packets she hands out. if you're class is really big she won't do an essay q either. my only problem is that the class was hard to follow because of her broken english but if you want a good grade this class is it. don't buy book.
shes okay, becareful tho always show up for class and always bring your book otherwise shell call u by name and ask you y u dont have ti or y u werent there. will also constantly as "is that okay?" and just nod and agree else shes a decent teacher, not hard and grades are clear
Be aware, she has changed the structure of the exams as of fall 2005, she doesn't use the packets nearly as much as before, she has free response so actually have to learn compared to just being able to memorize the answers from the packets, no longer a guaranteed A as in other semesters
She's one of the best teachers, teaching wise. I took this class and her econ class and if you go to class you don't even have to buy the book b/c she teaches so well. She never gave me crap for not going to class, she'll just ask you why you didn't come if your one of those people who always come. No homework easy tests, she want you to succeed.
She is an incredible teacher, she truly makes sure that everyone understands the material and teaches in such a way that you will absolutely understand it. Best teacher i've had yet.
Great teacher! Teaching method is absolutely wonderful. Reviews previous days lessons at beginning of class and explains everything thoroughly. Accent is easy to understand after a few minutes. Clarifies exactly what will be on test and makes tests easier than they could be. The discussoin class is especially helpfull/ a good review for tests.
she is very rude if she doesnt like you and its very hard to keep track of how you are doing int he class.. be wary
Very Very easy. A TON of extra credit. Even without it, an easy A. I didn't like her teaching style though. If you read the book and don't come to class, you can still get an easy A. Coming to class is not mandatory. However, if you don't show up regularly she'll ask you why you don't come in front of everyone.
Had her for stat351, one of easiest teachers ever. I didnt buy the book but took really good notes and I got an A. She gave extra credit on our last quiz, test and even the final, to help those out that werent doing that well. I highly recommend taking her class you will not regret it.
While she does present the material in a fairly straight-forward manner, she has a very hostile means of teaching. Ex: when handing back exams will make rude comments to the student who do poorly in front of the class. Your grade will consist of 2 midterms, 4 quizzes (lowest dropped), projects, and the final. Exams and quizzes focus on problems
Easy teacher but you HAVE to study all the 300 pages worth of material in order to pass the exams. Have to go to class too!!! She calls you out hardcore in front of the whole class if you dont show up.
very easy class, just go over the handouts and memorize the questions. sometimes she puts things not on the handout but something she taught in class so you should sometimes go to class.
Tries to help the class whenever possible with grading adjustments such as extra credit and dropping lower grades. She has an accent, but it isn't difficult to understand her.
She was very detailed in her lectures. She covered just about everything in the textbook very clearly. Her exams and quizzes were very straightforward. She also has a very bright personality that makes her approachable and she's more than willing to help you out if you have a problem.
Stats can be hard, but she makes it easy. Getting an A in her class is easy. Infact, if you fail her class you should change your major
This prof is one of best I ever had at UMBC. Sure she does has a strong authority teaching style but is extremely helpful and has a funny sense of humor....ALthough class attendence is not required, you should always show up for class all the time and do all work if you want a easy A. Its really a easy A if you do all the work!
this teacher is the best ever at UMBC.....u must take a class with her....she is so nice and beside she knows what she's taking about....
I thought Dr. Carrol was pretty good for 101 but Dasgupta is miles ahead in quality. That is to say that Dasgupta is one of the best professors I've had and she's pretty admirable too considering the volume of her work. Come to class, browse the chapters, ace the tests.
Awesome and easy professor. Honestly, if you go to class, pay attention, and do the review sheets, there is no way you can badly in her class. She is really funny and extremely knowledgeable.
She's really nice and cares about her students. Her accent is perfectly understandable as well.
Prof Dasgupta is very knowledgeable and helpful.this semester she did something new.instead of giving quizes in class, she posted them online, they were averagely about 80 questions multiple choice online. very time consuming. she makes sure her students understand the material. very nice prof.thinks of her students as her own kids. nice prof!
I'm not sure what all the hype is about her. I don't think she's all that great. I think she's kind of "show offy" when she teaches. She recites long equations and tries to teach calculus in a 101 class. Exams come from the handouts, but the short answers are kind of difficult. I wasn't all that impressed.
the class itself was not that bad although it was ridiculous that we had to take TUCE, and she told us about it like 2 months b4 her final... I like her teaching style; i can see how passionate it is. take her if you like econ or want to get an easy A w/out doing a lot of work... it doesn't mean u dun have to study... just try a lit' then u'll get
Not very impressive. We covered less than a half of the book. She wasted a lot of time on a dumb kid who was constantly arguing with her, stupid show off--he had no clue. She is good at explaining, but she is very forgetful, repeats herself a lot and uses filler words--not easy on the ears. She is worth about half of the money.
She is very nice to the ones who come to class and pay attention. She only taught half of the class, which could be a problem for those going to upper level classes and she added a standardized test into our grades, which was a bit unfair. But overall she cares about what she teaches and the class is easy. All exams have extra credit.
Took her 2 years ago, but I still remember her lectures. She is caring(very), but extremely strict. All the material she teaches in class will be crystal clear ( in terms of understanding). Book is not needed to learn the material, just used for examples. Just show up on class and you'll receive an A/B for sure
Prof. Dasgupta's lectures are very clear and she gives many opportunities to get extra credit; she genuinely wants students to do well and makes the class easy to do well in so long as you go to class and make the effort to understand the material.
Very helpful to those who want help. read the book before class, or right after to make sure u understand. She will answer any questions u want to go over in the book. doesn't respond to email, but when u come to class she'll answer your question. doesn't take attendance but even in a lecture hall, she STILL knows who's there and who isn't.
Understands that we're all not little Einsteins so offers extra credit worth almost half of each exam. This means you can literally get 50% and still get a 100% on the test. TA is always available and also very clear and thorough. Not a math person but still excelled in this class. TAKE HER IF YOU CAN. Actually makes Stat half way interesting.
whats all the hype about her?? how about democracy when it comes to determining the exam date! mmm! perfect for procrastinators who wish for a miracle!
Best Econ teacher out there... just read the handout she gives on BB... that sets you up for the tests... easy A i got so for
VERY EASY... LOTS OF EXTRA CERDIT POINTS... MUST READ THE FORMULA EQUATION IN THE BOOK.. NO HOMEWORK... SHE TEACHES U TO UNDERSTAND... GOING TO CLASS IS MANDATORY....
She is the best! Explains everthing VERY clearly, no hw, just take notes in class and read some. If you attend class and take all her notes, easy A. She provides a ton of extra credit on tests. Only assignments are 5 tests, the lowest of which you can drop. Great teacher
She was fantastic! I was terrified about statistics, but she made everything so clear and recognized if you were attending class regularly. I would recommend her to anyone willing to put in the effort to show up to class.
She makes you do work, but it's helpful. No homework (besides 4 projects), and the lowest quiz is dropped. She even dropped our lowest Midterm. Her primary concern in the students learning. You won't find a better teacher.
I LOVED HER. if you need to take econ 102, then take it with her! i hated econ 101 nd i thought that this class would be a drag too but it was reallllyy good. for any of her exams, make SURE you review the sample questions she provides for every chap (even if you skim and understand the concepts you should fine). Easy A!
awesome prof. read the text, and TAKE THE ONLINE REVIEW TEST. some of the questions are verbatim on her tests. make sure you show up to class once n a while too because at the end of the year you get graded on whether she can recognize you or not.
Dasgupta is an amazing professor. Make sure you do her review exams that she post on blackboard because she uses the same questions for the exam. Also attend class so she knows your face for the 10% class participation grade.
GREAT. Professor, she is very very good at explaining concepts in class and cares about student learning she is nice and helpful, One of the best professors at UMBC. Most material is taught in class and little outside reading or preperation is really unecessary. If your looking to take Macro take it with DASGUPTA. period.
She's a great professor that will try to help you understand the course. Her quizzes and exams has a curve and it is really easy to get at least a B if you attend her class and take notes.
She has an accent but takes great care to make sure she is understood by everyone. She knows the material like the back of her hand. Overall great professor. WARNING - 90% OF FINAL GRADE BASED ON EXAMS. If you are a bad test taker, not recommended you take her.
She's a pretty clear professor. tells you what you need to know for the exams. her tests are based off the study guides so look them over. She says the final is based from study guides but instead it seemed like it was written in another language. Very misleading. Overall easy to get a B.
HEY YOU!! YES YOU..LISTEN TO ME. She is one of the best professors I've ever come across. You may hear otherwise but don't believe the lies! Lots of extra credit opportunities. Just come to class, do the practice problems, and the class should be a breeze. If you don't understand, ask and go to discussion to get more clarity! God Bless you!
VERYY GOOD TEACHER!!! Make sure you attend class and take good notes. Look over the study guides as soon as they are posted. She is a very effective teacher and her lectures are interesting :) You will clearly know what is expected of you in her class.
Love her! You're really missing out if you take anyone else for Macro! Her lectures and exams are straightforward and you always know what she expects from you. Beware! She will know if you come to class or not, and attendance is a grade. Regardless, missing a couple days will not count against you.
Excellent professor, attend classes, take notes and DO THE HOMEWORK!!! She is very helpful and willing to assist you so long as she sees you are a serious student
She is a true teacher. You can tell she enjoys statistics. She is very effective at helping you understand, and she wants you to do well. One of the best professors I've ever had.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Show up to class everyday and she will know you, even if you never participate and sit in the back, it really it quite amazing. She loves students who come to class. Also, exams are straightforward and easy if you show up to class. She even has a sense of humor! She's a gem of a teacher.
Dr. Dasgupta is a sweet lady. She's a clear lecturer. Use the study guides she posts online! They look very much like the in-class quizzes. She gives many opportunities for extra credit on the quizzes. Overall, the class was reasonable.
TERRIBLE! Avoid her at all costs. She was very knowledgeable about the course, however, it didn't translate well to the class. She would ramble about topics and if we didn't understand she would make the explanation confusing and leave use even more confused. Her notes were also messy. WORST CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN, WORST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD.
This professor is great for Macroeconomics. I highly recommend her. You cannot lose points for skipping class, although she will put an alert on BB if you do (harmless). She follows the book, but she teaches with graphs (easy to understand) much more than words. 7 exams for your entire grade, no HW, only grades 6 best exams, and does curve
WONDERFUL TEACHER! COME TO CLASS! She has the book memorized, and puts it all on the board every class as notes. Most all tests are multiple choice, and come straight from practice tests she posts online. TAKE HER! She did move fast towards the end of the year, but raise your hand and she'll clarify anything. Accent is a little thick.
Tests are straight from the study guides, so make sure you study those. Go to class! She knows who is there and who is no, and she will definitely call you out. Study hard and you'll end up with an A or B
Absolutely one of the best professors I've had at this school. Makes econ interesting for any major and the professor has a sense of humor. If you take econ make sure to take it with this professor!
She makes NO time what-so-ever for students. Makes other students tutor you if you don't understand. Answers no emails, whether you need a meeting or have a question. No other grades besides tests. She has no reasoning behind the grades she gives. Her accent is strong and you can't read her notes. She never makes jokes and she's very intimidating.
you need to show up to class and participate in order to get extra credit. her class is extremely difficult as she touches on matters that may not even relate to the subject. if you are in class and remembers your name she will give you plenty of EC. i did terrible on most of my tests, did extremely well on my paper and homework and still got a A.
I really enjoyed Professor Dasgupta's class. Yes, she does have an accent but she talks very clearly so that you are able to completely understand her. Her class is all lecture but she engages you and relates the material to real life situations. Also she gives extra credit on all tests and the questions and powerpoints are online beforehand.
just one word : AWESOME. she is one of the best prof at UMBC, .take her ! but you need to show up to class, she knows who is there and who is not.
Dasgupta is my favorite professor at UMBC. Very clear, very thorough, and as long as you study her handouts, you'll ace the tests. She cares about the amount of effort you contribute (I missed a final because of an unexcused medical emergency and still landed a C). She gives you very clear instruction. Just go to class!
She is the best professor at UMBC. Just study the handouts and you'll pass the class with ease. The class is very straightforward. Professor Dasgupta writes everything on the board as she has memorized the whole book. We rarely used the book in class, so I don't think it is necessary to buy one.
One of the Best. She is very clear and is very efficient in teaching the material. If you have any questions about the material she will help you clarify, only if you ask her during class or right after because she does not reply to your emails. Lots of extra credit on her quizzes. 5-6 quizzes and a final and she usually drops the lowest one.
She's a brilliant lecturer with a really really good memory. Even in a lecture hall of 150 students, if you missed a day, she'll know. If you never show up, she DEFINITELY knows. She doesn't use powerpoints just what's in her head, because she can lecture 100% without them. Book not required hw is online (just get access code). Overall so easy.
Super easy professor. If you don't go to class just find someone else who does and get the notes. Not much homework, just a few exams. Most of the exams had questions that we practically did in class. Don't worry about the term paper, it's a joke. Took her for 408 as well, same thing.
Great professor. If you attend most of the lecture there's a great chance you'll get an A. I had a C and D on two tests but still ended up gettin an A in that class. She'll call you out if you skip too many classes.
She goes at a fast pace, but doesn't assign homework. She will have handouts online with 300+ multiple choice questions for each chapter or two. THESE ARE YOUR LIFELINE. She pulls exam questions straight from these packets so READ THEM ALL. There is also a lot of extra credit (I ended with a 135% in the class). Do NOT skip her class she will know!
Dasgupta is very clear and fair. She spends the entire time hand-writing notes (rather than using PowerPoint) which makes the lecture more engaging and interesting. The fact that she has the book memorized is impressive. All exam questions are available at the beginning of the semester so there is no reason to not know/understand the answers.
Avoid her for summer stat 351! Hard as hell! Her exams aren't easy and she doesn't give extra credit like in the regular semester on tests
A horrible professor. She is knowledgable but extremely haughty and only trying to prove how brilliant she is. Not a good professor. Her teaching style is uninteresting and demeaning. Avoid her at all costs. I would never recommend her to any student. Save your grade. Exams are very tough.
Tough grader: Will not curve grades and scores Get Ready To Read: The FYS I took was about Poverty but was heavily focused on ECON Participation Matters: Accused some students of skipping when they didn't In short - heavy Indian accent, wants to prove how knowledgable she is, and not recommended. I dropped this class after a month in.
Not a good teacher. She is focused on looking smart instead of having a thorough discussion with students. I also found her to be very unapproachable. She never smiled or looked comforting to students. She instead was always stern and was never welcoming. Take the class with another teacher. At least you will have a comfortable environment.
Not a good professor. If you missed class, good luck getting the notes because she hand writes the lecture on a blackboard and won't upload it online. Even if you were in class, good luck getting the notes down, her lecture notes are very unorganized and difficult to follow
her reviews are so unfair because she is such a sweet lady and she cares about her students. She is honestly one of the best professors i've had. Her exams are easy and she gives plenty of extra credits so its impossible to fail.
I am very disappointed with this class. I expected a phenomenal teacher based on the reviews but what the teacher is like is so far from that.
Professor Dasgupta runs a quality class. Attending class is a must if you want an A. She is very knowledgeable and answers every question we ask clearly. LITERALLY tells you what to do on the exam for an A. Only issue is she writes on a chalkboard so reading the board can be hard, but will read it out loud for you if need be. Would def take again.
Best teacher I've had so far at UMBC. She's extremely nice and helpful. She writes her lecture on the board, which is very engaging. I enjoy every minute of her lecture. Offer extra credits if you do well on her exams and quizzes. Come to class and study, ask for help then you'll absolutely pass the class.
Great teacher! Must show up to class to understand material. Make sure to do all of hw because it's worth a lot. Quizzes and exams can be tricky so make sure to practice a lot at home. She gives extra to make sure to take advantage of it. She can be unclear at times so make sure you ask her questions. No formula sheet is allowed on tests.
Dasgupta is smart, but she teaches ECON 102 like it is a 400 level class and not a 100 level. She expects you to know the material as well as her by the exams and if you don't you'll probably get a C at best. If you and I get the same answer but yours is more detailed, you'll get more credit on the exams. She doesnt answer emails for office hours
One of the best professors I've had at UMBC. She's clearly knowledgeable and explains things very well, and she clearly cares for her students. Attendance isn't technically counted, but she makes a clear point that you should attend all of them that you can; the tests are modeled after what she goes over. She also gives ample extra credit.
She is very rude and unwelcoming. Rarely responds to emails or replies back, 3 tests were MC with some extra credit (over 50 questions), 1 test was Free response and the final is free response. You will need to attend class to pass. Aplia HWs had over 50-75 questions as well.
She's a great professor. A little naive at times as she discussed students grades in class for those who failed. However, she is such a great professor and her instructions are quite clear. In my academic pursuit this is the third statistics course I've taken and she is by far been the easiest of the instructors to understand.
She is a great professor. Her exams are straight forward. Gives good examples in class and gives plenty of extra credit on exams. She curves the final grade of an individual based on performance and effort. If you fail, you didn't try. It's a 300 level course, you have to try. Easy A if you try.
The best professor I have ever had. She has memorized the entire contents of the books she teaches from and is very understanding. If you do not do well in her course it is entirely your fault. She's very curvy and gives plenty of extra credit
If you can't get an A there's something wrong with you. Literally some tests had 60 points of extra credit on them. (so you could get 160/100) Every test includes a minimum of 10 points extra credit. I didn't open the textbook even once in the class as her lectures explain everything. Very respected by students.
Amazing teaching ability. Teaches exactly what you need to know. Completely straightforward and extremely efficient teaching skills. Take the notes given in class and you should have no issues passing the class with an A
Great and informative lectures. Writes a lot of notes which are important for tests and exams. Come to class because she knows students facially and curves exams for people who attend lectures.
Nandita Dasgupta is truly a gem. Not only is she adorable and respectable, she does not put up with any crap. I personally love this about her. Her classes are mostly lecture and can be a bit dry, but material is very straight forward. If you participate in class and say hi when you see her, she will love you.
Best stat teacher. She offers extra credit on all quizzes and exams. One time I should've gotten a C but I ended up getting an A. Go to the lectures though so you know exactly what will be on the exams. PowerPoint slides cover ALL materials but she doesn't which means you could be studying for things you don't need to know for the exam.
Easy class if you put in the work and effort. Material gets a little challenging but she'll help if you ask. Quizzes and exams mirror lectures, so if you don't take notes, you will not do well. If she knows your face, you will get extra credit and there's e.c. on every quiz and exam (a lot!) Few h.w. assignments. 10/10 recommend. Great professor!
I can honestly say that she is the best professor I've ever had in college so far. Her lectures are simple, straightforward, and very informative. She is strict, but it's so that her students can learn and understand better. Very knowledgeable and a very nice person as well. You won't regret taking the class with her, trust me.
She is a very respected Professor and I do respect her for her knowledge. But she is unclear about course guidelines and often even forgets what she has taught in class. There is no specific textbook, disregards the syllabus, anything can come in the exam, even if she said it one fine day years ago. She is strict & says she cares but needs empathy
Great lecturer and doesnt read off any PowerPoint. She really knows her stuff. There was 4 quizzes and 2 midterms and a final. A quiz and the midterm were dropped. They key is to attend lectures and review the worksheets for the quizzes. The worksheets given in discussion are very helpful.
Didnt know anything about economics going into this class. Still do not know anything about economics after this class. But, i got an A. Just do your homework and talk to her in class, ask questions, make jokes, make her like you, and she will give you at least a B
Terrible "professor". Honestly, don't know how she teaches. She doesn't. She will lecture you the whole class and try to show off her knowledge of a subject. She could ask you a question and will answer it herself. Very harsh grader. You need to be very detailed in your answers.
I took Dasgupta for ECON 101 and I liked her style so I took STAT 351 with her and she remembered my face and name from ECON. She is very observant and straight forward. If you try and come to class she WILL help you out. Her lectures are basically the textbook so you don't really need to buy or read it. Study the class notes and you'll pass easily
Nandita can be strict. Just don't give her a reason to be mad at you, she is a very fair person. ECON has so much extra credit, before the final, I had a 102 in her class. You MUST go to class to understand the material as the book is not used (except for homework). This is a class you need to stay on top of and maintain.
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR FYS! She doesn't teach anything other than economics even though the class isn't focused on economics. She's unorganized and doesn't have a plan for test dates, writing papers, discussions etc. It was a mess!! She expects you to read 30 page chapter and know minute details and not concepts. Worst teacher FYS program can have!
I only rate when professors are either amazing/terrible. Worst "professor" ever. I would give her a 0/5 if it was possible. She spends all class showing off her knowledge. She will ask a question to the class, expect someone to speak & say a couple of words & will answer it herself. Very harsh grader. Answers on all materials must be very detailed.
Quizzes and exams are pretty easy, she gives extra credit in the tests and for attendance. Watch out for the final, it was significantly harder than the quizzes
She cares about her students and is open to any questions. The class is mainly graded on quizzes and exams. Aplia homeworks (online) can get tedious. If you study your class notes and the Aplia homeworks well, you can easily pass the class. She also gives extra credit on every quiz and exam, which is very helpful. The final was very hard though.
She is not a good professor. Try your very best to do well on the exams or she will humiliate you in front of the entire class. Would not take her again.
I loved statistics in high school, Dasgupta did a great job reviewing prior to exams and gave a lot of work problems for practice.
She is a great professor. Hew lectures are kinda boring. The materials that she gives students are so helpful for quizzes and exams. Quizzes are not that hard, but the final exams is very hard and has a lot of questions. You need to prepare well for that.
She doesnt teach well, very confusing. Goes fast on lectures. 5 quizzes and an 3 exams. Not a good professor, blames her TA, unprepared
Prof. Dasgupta can come off as mean sometimes but truly cares about students at the end of the day. STAT 351 is not very difficult in terms of content but you learn a lot during a semester so the final is rather difficult on top of your other courses. As long as you attend lectures regularly, take detailed notes and do hw you will do great!
the only reason why I rated her poorly is that she claims to care about her students but then tosses a quiz or an exam at them every week. Also my section was at 8:00 every morning and she would expect us to be wide awake and participating by then. Not good for college students would not take again.
She doesn't really respond to emails quickly, if at all, so try to catch her after class if you need to talk.
The class is synchronous which is fine. The exams were basically from her lecture notes and ppts. The textbook does not really help at all. She changes your grade when she finds out that you put the wrong answer. There are things that can help raise your grade kind of. Im kind of struggling to get a B and hope P/F works. PREPARE TO UNDERSTAND!!!!!!
Dasgupta is a caring professor but very outdated. She teaches by writing on the board and you gotta copy everything down to keep up. Tests are from a test bank, so not too hard to do well. She gives minimum 10% extra credit per test, and also gives extra credit out for participation. Overall her classes are on the easier side. An A takes 60% effort
She is a very disorganized person. Her guidelines for assignments are different every time. There are requirements written in every paper and different so you need to ask her for clarification. She adds stuff last min. Really struggling to get a B, really hope she's lenient in the end.
Do not take this class. You will not be tested on your knowledge of the Economics of Poverty. Instead, the tests ask for trivial details that only keen eyes will pick up on if you read the textbook. The lectures are not helpful since she only repeats what she has written on her 100 page long power points. 2 exams, each 15% of your grade, final 30%.
Terrible professor. Never take this professor for any of your classes for whatever reason. If you like going to hell, the doors are open. Rude to students, has no care or regard to students at all. Tests are unnecessarily difficult. Extremely unorganized. Worst professor in the history of professors on planet Earth.
She is by far the rudest person I have ever met and absolutely cannot take responsibility for her own mistakes and blames her student. Textbook is required and I use it to self learn. This class is required but she claims its optional and blames us for failing when she does not teach us. If you take her prepare to be tested on materials not taught
She's rude. She claims she is always there for her student then expect us to match her schedule. She is unorganized and expects us to know the materials in class when she does not actually teach us. You can ask her a question through her email but she will not respond and when she does she is rude and unhelpful. I can't believe she got good ratings
Synchronous class with mandatory lectures. Hw is relatively easy and tests are based on lecture notes and PowerPoint slides with webcam mandatory. She was much better in-person and more accessible with respect to questions and concerns. Overall I would wait to take her with an in-person class as you will learn the most and get better help.
She would get mad when students get confused and ask questions also her lecture notes are basically her writing down word for word whatever comes out of her mouth on a notepad. She takes attendance after every lecture so if you skip class you'll lose points. Also her exams are difficult for no reason but at least she gives you few extra credits.
She shouldnt teach online class ,
Ill start with the good she gives a lot of extra credit. Now, the bad her handwriting is extremely difficult to read so if youre taking notes, good luck. Her teaching is VERY fast paced so if youre like me and need things worked through step by step, good luck. The class is unorganized so if you like structure, good luck.
The online format of the course was disorganized, and she almost never responds to her emails. Glad that we had an amazing TA who was able to offer help whenever it was needed. Extra credit helped tremendously.
This class wasn't run very well online, and it showed in people's grades. Luckily exams were curved heavily this semester, but professor Dasgupta didn't really help. She could come off as rude and unsympathetic, and her lectures were often disorganized. Also takes attendance very seriously so you better show up.
I took ECON311 last spring. It was hard until we went virtual since the exam questions are taken from test bank/the web. Also she assigned an essay that was 20% of our grade; I didn't submit & still got an A. She said she makes sure we're on par with ivy league students by using a comparable curriculum. She is a tough yet caring person. very smart2
I had a stroke and she never replied to emails, then threw my hospital note at me and told me i should have emailed her more. when we went online in march she couldn't work any online platform and never told us we still had discussions, and failed us all on discussion attendance, which was in the syllabus as 10% of our grade but ended up 40%
Our class was completely online, and the professor was very flexible with homework and testing windows. Her lectures are long, detailed, and sometimes unclear, but she truly cares about her students imo. She has a slight accent and speaks loudly (which some other reviewers claim as rude). Every test and quiz has over 10% ec available. Great class!
The way she teaches is non-stop writing and reading off what she writes, which I find not very effective. Several times I did not get responses from her, and she is very strict on attendance. One good thing about this class is she gives out a good amount of extra credits.
Nice person, but terrible teacher. Unclear what was covered on exams. Lectures were 2.5 hrs. of her rambling. Handwritten notes on blackboard collaborate that were completely illegible. If you study the right material you'll be fine on her exams though. Pretty easy multiple choice. She uses lockdown browsers though.
Good professor. She cares about her students. However I will say her lectures can sometimes be unclear and a bit of rambling. But she is nice and offers lot of extra credit points and reopened our homework assignments.
Professor Dasgupta is great. I've had her for 5 classes now, and while her lectures can be a little unorganized her class is really easy. The online hw's/quizzes are a piece of cake and her exams aren't hard. Take notes, study the material, and your fine. There was a paper at the end of the semester, you pick the topic, and it's also very easy.
3 Test (each 10%), one cumulative final exam (30%), and homework on respective chapters (mind tap)(30%). Attendance counts as 10% of grade. Read the PPT, the chapters, and take notes in class and you should be able to get an A. Tests are really hard but is curved 10%. Dr. Dasgupta might come off as mean and strict at first but deep down she's kind
As an online class, this was miserable. An extremely hard class, if you want to even pass get ready for it to take up most of your time. Many will fail, 30% of your grade is exams, another 30% is the final. The lecture was boring, confusing, hard to follow, and more of a review of that week's material. Dr. Dasgupta is not good at teaching online.
Would definitely not recommend this professor for any economics class! Lectures consist of her writing notes on her iPad... If you ask questions she responds with an attitude and overall does not make students feel comfortable about asking questions. Your grade is basically 3 exams that account for 60% of your grade.
These other reviews are pretty harsh because Prof. Dasgupta genuinely cares for her students. She offers long windows for exams and even curves all of them, as well as SO MANY extra credit opportunities in every lecture by simply participating. Don't be fooled by the harsh reviews cuz those students probably didn't put in the effort.
Our grade is about 60% exams and tests. The rest is homework and attendance. The questions are also hard and she does not explain things well. The ppts are helpful and the practice questions. It is hard to pass without the extra credit.
Professor Dasgupta is very caring and really clear with all her lectures. She really wants her students to do their best and always gives out extra credit every lecture. Her exams are not too bad but you do need to do the homework and worksheets to help you out. She is great and the harsh reviews are unnecessary!
There was no discontinuity between the material presented in the homework and exams; pretty consistent all around. Rough presenter; writes on an iPad. Best strategy is to just copy what she says on a Word document, then look through it later and pick out the main concepts for flashcards. If you do this, this class is an easy A, guaranteed.
Hard to understand and annoying
This class is straight forward: exams, HW each month and research paper that's directions were confusing and all over the place so avoid doing it last minute. Study the slides because it provides in depth details about the concepts and it'll help with the exams. She offers A LOT of extra credit by participating. Stay consistent you'll get an A.
I would not recommend if you're looking to take an FYS course. The entirety of the lectures was spent talking about her experiences rather than the topics of the readings. The exams were easy but had a lot of random questions that were not on any study guides. It's easy to get an A but I couldn't stand her as a lecturer.
The exams are in a lockdown browser with a camera and microphone, which was very intimidating. I believe she gives extra credit for those who answer questions in class. I found her rude and not understanding. She doesn't accept late work and the homework assignments sucked. I didn't actually read the textbook because everything is online.
Lectures went into great detail, although sometimes examples were done wrong and needed to be redone. Harsh grades.
Low-tier econ class. The way she presents information online is on small Post-it notes, which were tough to read. She gives 1 pt extra credit when you participate. Her lectures aren't interesting, but you must attend as she takes attendance. I had to research part of the final as she never taught us the necessary processes. Excel heavy.
Extremely tough grader, have to go to class, and is a poor lecturer. DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU ARE PLANNING TO WORK 15+ HOURS A WEEK
pretty easy class everything is online just lock in slightly on the exams and study the material she gives you and take notes during lecture. overall pretty simple class
This is my second time having Professor Dasgupta, she is bland but kind. Course material is like 320 and 311 combined. Give plenty of time to do homework, one had 120 questions. Exams are just like homework, and there are only 4, with lockdown browser, plenty of time. One easy project. Confusing lectures with mandatory participation and attendance.
Professor Dasgupta cares about her students and offers plenty of extra credit opportunities. The lectures can be unclear at times, but staying engaged and using resources like unstuck AI for study prep can help you succeed in this challenging course.
She's just bad.
she's just bad and she talk too much, she's very boring and she just don't know how to grade
Horrible makes homework worth more than exams and quizzes
Worse professor I've ever had. Cancelled so many times and blamed us at one point. Don't take her in person.
Basically useless lectures, I learnt everything by studying the textbook. She gives you exactly 1 minute to sign your attendance on Quickly. If you miss it, you can stay after class and she will mark your attendance but you have to go through a whole interrogation about what the day's lecture was about. There are multiple attempts for homework.
She canceled class so many times with little notice. Her lectures are generally unhelpful, but she gives SO MUCH extra credit. You can get a maximum of 120% on every exam and quiz. For example, I got a 45/60 on an exam, but it was still considered an A instead of a C. Use the study guides for exam practice and this will be an easy A.
She cancels classes often on the day of, and the lectures do not apply well to the exams she assigns. Discussion sessions with the TA are a lot more useful. Try to participate as she gives a lot of extra credit. If it takes you longer to understand concepts like me, expect to be studying a lot, and try to find different videos and sources for help.
this isn't a flipped classroom but felt like one, doesn't have notes it's all in her head(her words not mine) not a hard class if u try hard. she does have slides, but they are copy and paste from the text book but just the parts u need, had to teach myself before every exam, kinda easy tho, quizzes are conceptual, exams are mathematical.
I took her for a class on US poverty. Do not take her; she will make you email assignments instead of uploading them. If you answer questions incorrectly in class shell make you feel bad. My personal cherry on top is she embarrassed me in front of the whole class during a presentation, so if you want a sweet understanding teacher, she is not it.
Sigh. This is my second time taking this prof, and unfortunately she has gotten worse. She is easily confused by her own work, is a very harsh grader, especially towards things that aren't specified in the directions, talks a lot while we are taking exams because everyone is constantly confused. The curve is pretty great though.
Horrible. Makes the content much harder than it needs to be, she doesn't give clear answers and definitions, and if you ask for clarification she'll tell you to look at her powerpoint slides (that are 50+pages and impossible to follow). She has obvious favorites in the class, and never answers her email.
You basically have to learn things by yourself. Doesn't respond to emails (nor in-class text either). The reading and homework are nothing like the exam questions (literally completely different). Her lectures make it impossible to keep paying attention. Handed out graded assignments and talked DURING THE ENTIRE IN-PERSON FINAL EXAM!
Does not answer emails, Writes on ipad has poor scribble hand writing making it impossible to understand. The class itself isn't bad if you spend countless hours studying on your own. Attendance is required even for the Online class. I learned most through power point slides. The final exam is terrible withno homework or exams to cover beforehand.
This professor obviously writes her own positive reviews, it is incomprehensible to think someone had a positive experience in this class.
she wants you to take notes during lecture when she repeats the textbook. On the exam I sent her the excel sheet instead of copying+pasting I failed it. I tried to explain it to her and told her if she just opened the excel sheet I sent she would see, but she said no. many students in the class made the same mistake as me. She is not understanding
Took Professor Dasgupta for Econ 320 and Stat 351. She is very intelligent and has a deep understanding of the material. She provides Power-point slides that are very helpful when studying for exams. Exams make up most of the grades but she provides extra credit just for participation in class. Lectures are very informative as well. Great Professor
The material itself isn't difficult, but she makes it seem harder than it is. Bad lectures that are convoluted and boring. Refuses to provide any practice problems or study guides for exams. Does not tell us what will be on exams and will include things outside the chapters she said we were testing on. Take this class with someone else if you can.
Lectures are kind of disengaging as she just writes on a whiteboard. She gives a test bank with exact questions from the exam so study this well and you will pass. She also gives extra credit from in class participation so try and answer every question in class. It's not hard to pass this class, but as a professor she isn't the best.
She's alright and I see the potential of it being a great class but she does not do a good job promoting discussion in a dicussion-based class. The room often goes silent, waiting for somebody to say something, where most of the time I had to speak up just so we weren't sitting there all day. I quite liked her; she's all-around tough but fair.
