This is a difficult class, but if you go to every lecture you will be fine. She is extremely helpful and willing to make time outside of class. I would recommend taking her if you're ready to work hard.
I had heard horrible, scary things about Professor Aldrich prior to taking this class. I took this class in the summer and it was such a good idea. She is difficult on grading, but I found her class enjoyable. If you have any interest, you will find the class goes by fast. I thought she was funny and well educated on the subject.
Teacher that was terrible at clarifying information and her exams are impossible to get a good grade in
She's super tough with grading her Labs (her assignments). She also only does a midterm and a final and then a final paper, which is nice for some people, but I didn't like it. We did the final paper in sections and she graded our sections and was really tough. It's like she didn't even take into consideration that none of us have done this before.
I enjoyed professor Aldrich. She concerns herself with helping her students & she doesn't do anything unfair. Is she a hard grader? Yes. But this is a research class & she is preparing her students that intend to go on to the next research level. Her tests are beyond easy if you read the book & pay attention in class. Take her and put in the work!
She had seem to forget that we are not professionals and graded everything too tough! I had asked her multiple times to meet after class for help on the research paper and she answered with a no every time. Tests as well were difficult as most college tests have been. However, I would recommend taking a different professor to earn a better grade.
There were only two tests, but they followed the outlines she provides for class. If you study those, you're golden. I barely read the book and got an A. Labs were tough, but she gave examples to follow for formatting, which was most of the points. She had us turn in drafts and gave great feedback for the final paper. I would take her again.
Great professor. Everything was laid out very clearly and explained well. She's very nice and cares about her students actually learning. The tests were very easy if you go to class and pay attention. The paper was a challenge but essential for learning how to do research. Perfect!
Professor Aldrich was a very interesting professor. Her lectures were helpful in understanding the material. Her quizzes were tricky and were largely based on the chapter readings and partly on lecture so be prepared to be an active student (which, you are in college, so well, yeah). Anyhow, she knows her stuff and she is relatable.
Hard professor for PSY 300. She is VERY particular about the papers. As for the test, they were difficult even when you studied for them. I would recommend finding a different professor for this class.
Her lectures are interesting and she teaches the material well. However, be prepared to read A LOT. Quizzes every single day of class that test on the 20-30 textbook pages that you had to read for that day. Sometimes questions will be on very small details of the text. Group projects are very inconvenient without much guidance.
Tests are tough, doesn't give out study guides. If you actually take notes and take time to study the class is super easy. Daily quizzes on reading so you stay on top of it. Really good prof, is there if you need any help.
Dr. Aldrich is phenomenal. I'm honestly laughing at all of the people that are saying her tests are too tough and she is an unfair grader. Clearly, those students were prepared for an easy A and do not understand that you have to put in work to earn a degree. She is extremely helpful and anyone who takes her is lucky to have her. Amazing Porfessor
take this class if you want to LEARN. Read the sections before class, 5 point quizzes in class. Lectures are packed with information, and great examples and in class activities. She is amazing at teaching everything but sometimes the exams are tough. Two group projectspresentations that are not too bad. Final exam isn't stressful which was nice.
Professor Aldrich lectures matched the class readings, and you need to read for the daily quizzes. Her quizzes are worded somewhat difficult so be sure to read the bold terms and around them. Study hard for the exams and do exactly what she says on the observation project to get a good grade.
Tests were very difficult for me, however, she has several group projects that brought up my grade more. You are expected to read a decent amount, and this is what I didn't have a lot of time for. Reading helps tremendously on tests. Attendance not mandatory but there is a quiz every class period.
Naomi is great! She does assign short reading quizzes at the beginning of each class, but as long as you do the assigned readings, there is no reason to not get an A. Her exams are actually not that bad as long as you take good notes and pay attention. She does not give out study guides however. I would definitely recommend her and take her again!
Reading is mandatory and you still might not get the answers on the reading quizzes correct. Tests are tough and a lot of group projects are assigned, but her lectures are interesting and she's pretty funny.
Reading is mandatory! She says her outlines are what's on the test, but it's not. It's all the reading from the book! Tests are tough and a lot of group projects are assigned, but her lectures are interesting and she's pretty funny.
1000 points for class and exams are 175 points 3.5 points/question (50) 5 point quizzes every class period. does not finish lectures on material. This was my toughest class this semester and I worked hard and still ended up with barely a C. For this class being the next course from General Psych, it was more like a 400 level course.
Reading is required because she gives 5 point quizzes every class period over it. She tends to not finish her power points on the lecture and goes off on tangents sometimes. The exams are kind of challenging, so you should study. Overall, she is very knowledgeable and she's enjoyable to listen to because she's funny.
Reading quizzes everyday in the beginning of the class. She makes her class interesting and I learned a lot. Studied for hours and got D's on two tests and a B on one. I'm usually an A student, ended with a B-. There are two big projects that help boost your grade and they're pretty easy. If you like to learn and read take her.
Professor Aldrich herself is not a bad professor, I actually enjoyed her lectures. However, her tests are IMPOSSIBLE. The first test average was a 60, and she thought that was totally normal, which is actually alarming. She never gives study guides, which clearly would have been helpful, and gives you a lot of group projects. Don't take her!
I would recommend taking a different professor if possible. Her exam are hard and there is no study guide. There are two group project with large group sizes making meeting difficult. Ever class there is a reading quiz and they are hard even if you read and study for them. This class was a constant point of stress.
She's very funny and clearly loves her field but it is a difficult class. not impossible but the daily quizzes are annoying and time consuming and the exams are very difficult. the group projects are fairly easy and are a good way to boost your grade. studying from the textbook is a must from exams because her lectures are all over the place
Prof. Aldrich was a hard professor in the ways of her tests. The final exam however is the easiest and most everyone will receive an A. There are two main group projects that are presented to the whole class. Every day there is a quiz so you can't miss. She is funny and is very knowledgeable about the subject. Do the reading and you will pass.
I ended up with a B in the class, which she said was a great grade for her class. I am an all A student, so this was pretty disappointing, but I still absolutely loved her class! She KNOWS what she is talking about and is there to answer questions. The tests are all application, so study strategies are key! Take her!
She is a very funny professor and clearly knows what she is talking about. Her class seems easy at first because she is so nice but her exams are extremely difficult. there are daily quizzes over the reading and none are dropped so you have to come to class. It's not an impossible class but her notes are not the most organized which makes it hard
Very nice but I could never figure out how to study for the exams which made this class very difficult. All she says is to look over your notes and she does not give a study guide. Try to take a different prof if possible.
She is a good person but a horrible professor. I would not ever take her again. She is a really hard grader and acts as if we have all done APA formatting for SPSS and a research paper before- which we have not. It is the introduction class not expert. She also does not provide much help outside of class if you have questions. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE
I did not get her teaching style at all and her grading was not clear to me. I felt she would say one thing and when I would apply it she would say that it's wrong. It was straight lecture for every class unless it was peer review day, which I didn't think helped as she grades very anally and no one was really clear on what was wanted.
She gives daily quizzes to make sure you come to class which is very annoying but also helps boost your grade if you actually study and do well. The quizzes are over the bolded words in the text so you know exactly what to focus on. She explains things very well but you need to read the textbook too and the reading assignments are very long.
She has daily quizzes to make sure you read the material before class. She never finishes the notes during class and we never come back to the notes, but we were still tested on all of the material. Tests can be pretty difficult.
Dr. Aldrich expects a lot out of her students, and if it's your first time taking an upper level psych class, I would not recommend her. The whole semester you work on one research project, and it's really difficult. She's not very helpful in her office hours, and expects you to know everything just based off her lectures alone. Do not take her!!!!
I love her lectures. She is always willing to answer questions and gives personal examples, some of which are really funny. The tests are definitely harder than I was expecting, but I like her regardless. She's very knowledgeable and I would definitely take another class with her.
She was a great professor. Very enthusiastic, and helpful. Lectures help extremely with understanding the subject. Exams are hard, you have to be able to apply the material to situations. Lots of studying, but it was interesting to learn about.
i honestly loved her. she did make you work, but she explained what you had to do. and if you ever needed help, she helped. group work was a lot of fun and super easy. she makes the class interesting because you can tell she enjoys it.
Dr. Aldrich is a very nice, caring and funny woman, but her grading is very harsh. Her exams are way harder than they should be. Got a very poor grade on the group research project paper we spent the entire semester on, which dropped by grade A LOT. Again, nice lady, but unless you do everything PERFECTLY, you will not get an A.
I absolutely loved Naomi! She was so awkwardly funny, which made the class really enjoyable. The class was very lecture-heavy, but we watched a lot of videos and did learning activities as well. You probably do need the book for this class (or I'm selling textbook notes on Stuvia!) because it is directly based on the textbook.
Aldrich is a very good professor. Make sure you study for her exams though because if you don't you will not get a good grade. She is very nice woman and she works with you a lot on stuff that you need. There are a couple big assignments but she grades them really easy and those grades make up for the test grades.
Overall she's a solid choice. If you don't want to write the usual PSY 301 15 page final paper take her. Lecture heavy and her exams are difficult. She gives study guides but you need to study a lot in order to pass the exams. Her lectures are a good pace and puts effort into making them interesting. Also you do a couple easy research projects.
I LOVED this professor! She's was the final reason I decided to change my major to psych. I absolutely adore her. The class is lecture heavy but she makes it very interesting and breaks it up with short videos pertaining to the topic at hand. Prof. Aldrich is easily my favorite prof I have ever had here at GV! Definitely recommend!
Professor Aldrich was a respectable professor that I would recommend. The class consisted of all lecture and 2 big group projects. The first exam everyone does bad on but then everyone improves. She gives opportunities for extra credit as well. And she's the only prof that doesn't give a 15 page paper at the end of the course.
Prof Aldrich was a pretty good prof. She gives you extra credit opportunities if needed, and is on top of grading. Requirement for 2 presentations and a pretty big outside assignment but it was super easy. I have nothing bad to say about her.
Shes a great professor and truly knows what she is talking about and is very passionate about what she teaches. There are weekly quizzes online that are based off the readings, some exams and two group projects. It was a very fun and interesting class with her and I learned a lot from her and she always had answers to all the questions.
I am taking this class during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic and this class is terribly unorganized. I can't find due dates for projects anywhere, and the due dates for assignments are different between the modules/submission link. NOTHING IS PRESENTED CLEARLY. It was so hard to find information about project and assignment requirements.
I took Prof Aldrich during COVID this year. I actually found the course to be well organized and easy to understand. She assigns "modules" that are due every other 2 weeks, and everything that's due is accurately listed in each one. I enjoyed having her this year and although there was a decent amount of homework, it's an easy A if you work for it.
Took this class during COVID and did not like it very much. Two big group projects, unorganized/confusing due dates, A LOT of reading, an overwhelming list of things to do in the bi-weekly modules and I feel that I did not learn nearly as much as I should have. Learning is on you so make sure you keep up and hope that you have good group members.
This prof was great! The class was completely online including all tests and quizzes; she was super nice and accessible outside of class and accommodated me when I had tech issues. There are a couple group projects to complete but they are not difficult. 100% take her for PSY 301!
She grades everything the last week and unless you are perfect you will not pass with a good grade. I had an A all year until the last week of this class. She gives terrible feedback, is not helpful, and doesn't care how you do overall. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!!! She is the reason I did not end with a 4.0
DO NOT TAKE HER! She does not care about the well-being of her students. She is bad at grading and expects to learn everything yourself. You must be good at writing APA papers and be a perfect student to pass.
She was horrible at responding to emails so I stopped reaching out & I am lost in this class. The group work is so stressful for no reason, the rubric isn't clear and the workload is enormous. I'm sure she's a nice woman but this class makes me hate myself. My friend is her online class and has 1/4 of the work I do in the in-person section.
Took once online and failed. Repeated in-person and was slightly better. Tests are hard-some info comes from lecture and some from book. Hard to know what to study for.
Prof Aldrich is the sweetest lady and tries her best. This was her first in-person class that shes taught in a couple of years, so she admitted that she is still getting back into the swing of things. Shes very knowledgeable about her subject and gives clear expectations. Exams are hard, but there are lots of EC opportunities! Do the readings!
Professor Naomi is really laid back and helpful when helping out with group work, but she hardly responds to emails and has a grader who takes forever to grade the assignments. You won't know if you're doing your assignments right or get feedback on them until the second half of the semester. I'm currently failing this class.
She lacks communication so much for being an all online class. She never responds to emails and sends boat loads of work to do with no background context...would not reccommend even as a back burner course. She also never puts your grades in until the end of the semester so you don't know your grade til the last month of class.
The worst professor I have ever had. She never emails back so you never know if you are doing an assiggment right or not. She grades really tough on group projects for being online only and never puts grades in until the last week of the semester, so you have no idea what your grade is until then and it could be too late to get your grade up.
We had a VERY hard semester. She is a super nice person, but you can tell she has too much on her plate at all times. It was really hard to keep up because we missed so many days in class and we didn't learn most of the content for the final but were still given it with no accommodations. The paper is 30 pages long and not bad, but she is unclear
Professor Aldrich seems like a good person and you can tell she genuinely cares about her students. The class was relatively easy. Although sometimes instructions are unclear and she is not great about responding to emails.
She did not have most of my assignments graded until after midterms. Even at the end of the semester after taking the final (which had specific questions), she still does not have all my assignments graded. TERRIBLE GRADER. If you are a person who relies on feedback, do not take this class. She is also bad at lecturing and often gets side tracked.
This professor assigns a lot of group project work. The textbook was through LaunchPad and it was an interactive textbook, it was not hard at all. Shes very understanding, will give extra time to complete projects/work if you reach out to her. I enjoyed her course!
Dr. Aldrich was really sweet, but this was the most disorganized course I've ever taken. Very important assignments were hidden in Bb, the syllabus wasn't very clear, modules were FILLED with work that was hidden, guidelines were foggy, etc. The class itself wasn't hard, but I had constant anxiety about missing a deadline.
Dr. Aldrich greatly cares about student success. She will work with you if you are having difficulties grasping a concept or if groupwork partners aren't doing their portions of work. She is a great professor, probably the best I have had, and was incredibly helpful in a class that tends to be quite difficult.
I love Dr. Aldrich. I had a great time with her in this course. I loved her so much that I took her PSY 301 Child Development class, which is her area of passion. She is a great teacher, she is understanding, wants her students to succeed, and is very clear about her instructions. Take her courses if you have an opportunity! She is so sweet.
I took this class online asynchronously. It was a very easy class for the most part. There were two group projects which is kind of annoying in an online class because it is hard to communicate and coordinate with group members. But other than that, I greatly enjoyed the class and the professor was really kind!
The class is sort of hard but I liked the professor. Her tests are insanly hard. There is 2 group projects, the second one is pretty big and durring finals week. She keeps the lectures interesting by telling little stories and they are so funny.
I LOVED Aldrich as a prof for this class!! It was an 8:30am class, but she made it so interesting & engaging, so I never minded how early it was! Her lectures were always creative and included many examples. Lots of quizzes, but as long as you do the assigned readings, you'll do well :) Do the extra credit & go to class!!!
I loved professor Aldrich. She cares a lot about her students and is a great professor. I went through something very hard during the semester, and she supported me and helped me get through the class. She's clear about what she wants us to learn. She works with her students and meets people where they're at. I definitely recommend her.
She's a nice lady and good at lecturing for the most part. But she takes forever to grade assignments which is frustrating because then I don't know how I'm actually doing in the class and now it might be too late to get my grade up. She also doesn't accept late work so make sure you stay on top of all the labs and writing assignments.
Dr. Aldrich was a good professor. Her lectures are often boring and she gets sidetracked and lot, but in the end she gets to the point. There are quite a few writing assignments but they were never too bad. She also offers many extra credit opportunities. The only thing that I disliked was how slow she graded.
Her lectures are boring and I usually tuned them out, but the powerpoints are helpful to look back at later. She also takes forever to grade things. You work in a group for the entire semester and the project is divided nicely, but it is annoying if you get a bad group member. Overall she's really nice and an ok prof - nothing truly bad to say
Whole class is a group project to create a research article. Paper due almost every week towards the end of the semester. Quizzes are pretty difficult. Exams are decent if you study. Didn't use the book the whole semester.
I would've learned more just working by myself. Her comments on my writing were really rude. None of my other professors think I write bad.
Dr. Aldrich is great! Her stories are so fun and exciting. She cares about all the students, often gauging where the class is at before she continues to lecture. Beware, there is a LOT of reading and the tests are pretty challenging! She gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit. A handful of quizzes a week based on reading, & 2 group projects.
Absolutely NOTHING is graded, and it is week seven of the semester. I've never had such a terrible experience with a psychology professor at Grand Valley. She talks so much about how her teaching strategies are amazing, but I'm a straight-A student, and take it from me; this is the most frustrating, low-level, easy class I've ever taken.
There's a week left of school and she still hasn't graded 7 assignments, which is annoying. Not a bad professor, but the class is newer and she doesn't have content/teaching style locked down. Definitely a survivable class, but if you're not great with statistics or psychology research methods, maybe take a different professor.
Assignments are graded at the very last minute, so you will not know your grade until the very end of the semester. Assignments are posted very last minute, only giving you (sometimes) less than 1 day on weekends to complete difficult assignments. Very unorganized and a lack of communication. I felt severe anxiety and stress about this class.
It is last week and she still has SEVERAL assignments not graded. She made up for it by giving the class extensions. I survived the class. Since she accommodated for her mishaps, I was tutor-heavy in this class. If you were good at math, you'd do fine. If you weren't good at math and have her for a professor, pack your bags and find someone else!
Grades nothing, no feedback anywhere but grades like she has provided feedback. I've had her before and she was great but according to her, she's going through it. She will make her lack of planning your emergency. She will not care how you are doing and does not answer emails.
I hate to give this professor this rating, since it was her first time teaching this class. However, she was not understanding with students at all when we were struggling, and it was the whole class. Doesn't grade things ever, so I don't even know what my grade will kinda be. Had no idea what I was doing as an A/B student.
Pros: offers extra credit, is flexible with changing deadlines, encourages working with others to solve problems. Cons: doesn't simplify concepts well, doesn't accept late work, can be a picky grader.
She can be a very tough grader sometimes and sometimes you feel as though you don't know what exactly she is asking for/instructions are unclear. She likes to randomly call on people during her lectures and honestly, you don't even need to attend the lectures because all the notes are posted on BB. She also takes a while to grade assignments.
She was nice enough, never really taught just read off a slideshow that never really made sense. If you want to pass this class you have to dive deep into the textbook and teach yourself. You will not pass if you do not show up to class. Exams were extremely hard, I have never seen test scores so low in my life. I would not recommend taking her.
Dr. Aldrich was a great professor and definitely knows the content and that shows through in her lectures. The entire class is usually just a lecture and sometimes we'll work on SPSS with her through a dataset. She is usually pretty accessible outside of class time and sends out emails often.
Honestly she just seems angry and annoyed having to teach. I don't pay gv for this. I'm an A student and my gpa will be trashed from her teaching
Love Prof Aldrich. The notes are posted on blackboard but going to class makes a big difference in understanding the materials and how to use SPSS fully. Good amount of extra credit offered, will succeed as long as you ask questions. She is very nice and understanding!
Naomi was very kind and very present. I always appreciated her. She is very flexible if you have life stuff going on and need extensions on exams or assignments. She is always willing to work with you. There are lots of assignments in this course, but considering this is a 300 level class, I don't think that counts against her. SUPER relatable prof
