Very enthusiastic about the content of the course. Good lectures - always interesting.

She's very enthusiastic and young! An inspiration to all. Interesting classes but make sure you study hard for her exams! She likes to base most questions on the readings so you MUST read and understand the textbook to get a good mark! She's great though!
She's super young and super awesome! on the first day of class, I thought she was the T.A until she introduced herself LoL. She's really interesting and shares her own experiences. But she'll ask questions on tests specifically from class to make sure you're attending and not just relying on the book
Hot and a great prof. Oh, and she's hot.
Was a really great course. She keeps it interesting and she's great at answering questions. She has experience in the feild and she always relates real life cases she's dealt with back to the class. Tests are really easy and straight forwards, the txt is easy to read. Would definately reccomend her.
Extremely intelligent and inspirational to psychology students. Includes insights from her own experience as a clinical psychologist. She explains all content really well. She is really approachable and real.
pretty good prof must admit. makes you work for your marks. her exams are not the usual psych stuff. she expects you to be able to apply what you learn to situations/cases..but one thing that was kinda irritating was that she thought a test review ment only saying 'study everything'!
Very hard marker. The exams very very difficult. Didnt give a great review for the exams. Overall, an okay prof!
I found the course material itself to be really interesting, but she is an amazing professor. Good, clear lectures - very organized and always on track. The assignments are marked fairly. Very knowledgeable and always open to questions. I learned a lot in her class and found it to be my favourite course thus far in all of my nursing undergrad.
Interesting class. You'll get a good mark if you go to class and do the readings. She's a good lecturer and engages the class well through her own personal stories of being a psychologist. The only problem with her class was she wasn't assertive in the "no talking while the teacher's talking" rule which made the class somewhat annoying at times
She was great. Its crucial that you attend class though because she puts stuff that you would only hear in lecture on the exams. But she is strict about manners and professionalism and things like that, which are irrelevant for the most part.
Highly irrational professor on a power trip.
Very great professor. Thought that this class would be more challenging than previous psych courses. Very helpful and insightful. Attending lectures is a must as well as reading the textbook, but it's all very interesting material.
Challenging but extremely interesting. Lecture and textbook material are equally important as well as thorough notes in class.
Great in the classroom, not so great outside of it. Be prepared to be made to feel pretty tiny if you don't measure up to her expections.
If you are looking to get a decent grade DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSS! She is a great lecturer but a horrible marker. She has extremely high expectations, expect a grade in the C-D range. If you are taking this course as an elective to boost your gpa, take something else.
Read the textbook. If it's a requirement you have to push for it or switch. Not easy marker, has high expectations. Word of advice, bring a laptop if you have one and sit close to her. She doesn't move away from the podium, making it hard to hear. Lots of in class discussions that appear on the exams
Naomi's lectures were amazing but her tests were brutal and her assignment was ridiculous. If you don't need a high mark I would recommend taking the class just for her lectures but if you want an A you should run far and run fast.
Naomi lectures well and is very knowledgeable on the subject. She tries to engage the class in interesting conversations. I found it hard to see the person behind the professional sometimes, and therefore was shy to approach. The multiple choice tests are very tough. I 'm a straight A student and got a B+ in this class.
She teaches in a very comprehensive and encouraging way. Though, the tests (three) are contradictory of her lecturing style. The questions on core concepts are few and far between, which I personally found very frustrating. The questions are extremely detailed and random making studying very difficult.
Challenging but really knows her stuff.
horrrible
Dr. Koerner is an excellent prof albeit her tests are very challenging. They're based on not only PPT slides, and textbook but any other discussions you have in class. However, her lectures are very interesting and it's hard to not pay attention. She really knows what she's talking about as she is also a practicing clinician. Great course and prof.
Dr. Koerner's lectures were great. You must go to class because she gives a lot more information than what is on the slides even if it looks like they're pretty full. The textbook is mandatory because chapters assigned for the midterms must be fully read and understood. Awesome prof! She really knows her stuff!
I found her classes really interesting, she really knows her stuff. I personally didn't find the course really hard, it's just a lot of content. It's important to go to class and take notes because literally anything she says could be on the test, plus textbook material. She's also really approachable, and will answer any questions.
I found PSY325 very interesting. Naomi's lectures well and take good notes because some of what she discusses appears on tests, which are a mix of multiple choice and short answer. I personally didn't find her tests hard, but they can be challenging if you don't do the readings. Do the readings! Slides are not enough. Overall, a great course.
Naomi is an amazing prof. At first I was a little intimidated, but she is actually a really genuine person and it was a real treat being in her class. Even in a huge lecture, she takes the time to get to know peoples names and will call on you by name when you participate. Tests are hard but fair. A real gem. Would definitely take again.
I generally really like my profs at Ryerson and have nothing bad to say but I am leaving this review to caution students who receive academic accommodation on taking her class. My accommodations states that I require extensions on assignments and she has been the first prof to deny me this part of my IEP. Other than that I had no issues.
Do not take a course with her, you will regret it.
Dr. Koerner went really in depth into each psychological disorder in every lecture, which I really appreciated. The midterms were fair but the final was ridiculous. She is not very warm and doesn't encourage students to ask for help. Attendance is mandatory as she provides a lot of additional information that is not in the slides.
Koerner is knowledgeable on the subject and likes to engage her class during lectures by asking questions, but there ends her positive qualities. The course is artificially difficult testing via seemingly random selection of mc questions, confusing answers, bad assignment instruction, and late grading, generally unaccommodating to any concerns.
Naomi is very knowledgeable on the subject and I enjoyed her lectures. Her exams are a combination of lectures + textbook content so attendance is mandatory. I have to agree with the others and say that she isn't very accommodating and encourages student to drop out if they're doing poorly rather than offer help. Overall not a difficult class.
Dr. Koerner has high expectations for her students. If you skip just one class you will lose at least 2 marks on the exam because some of the information is on the slides here she only offers to students who attend class. Read the book, memorize the slides. Fortunately she is very knowledgeable, and explains everything well so that should help.
She's really nice and helpful, and overall a great professor. Just do the readings and memorize her slides and you're good.
Great professor! She explains concepts well and gives good feedback. Definitely take this course with her.
Wasn't bad but wasn't amazing either, didn't really get a feel for her as a prof since it was online. Responded quickly though and marked easy in my opinion! Midterm and final were pretty tough but maybe that's cause I didn't study that much haha.
Doesn't give clear-cut instructions/expectations for assignments. If a mark on an assignment is below average or expected, all the feedback is critical, negative. Expected to heavily expand on knowledge through research. As an online class, there could have been better communication for expectations.
With this course being online, make sure to keep up with all textbook and assigned readings. The grading for assignments, midterm and final is tough so get ready to work for it. Quickly responds to questions, which is good. Overall, not bad as a prof, just the way it is delivered could be more easier for students.
She has a lot of strong opinions, and will test you on her beliefs. READ THE TEXTBOOK as half of the exam questions are never covered in lecture, you only learn them from reading. Also, the other half are straight from her lectures, so make sure you go to them. The class is super interesting, but she makes the material harder than it needs to be.
She makes content and exams harder than they need to be. An interesting subject in general. However, she seems to only focus on students' academic performance. Does not seem to care about students' well-being nor actual learning about the course. Very demanding. Get ready to commit.
Her knowledge isn't very broad and should learn more or be supervised before teaching students.
Probably one of the worst online professors I have had. Feeling as if she does not care much for students. Expects online discussions to be done way earlier than needed and says she will dock marks if they are not done early enough (keep in mind she makes the due date friday but expects to be done by wednesday). Really regretting taking this course
Happy that this class was online because when met for the in person exam this prof was nothing short of rude and unapproachable. Even the way she speaks online via email makes her appear this way. Will be making sure I dont get her for any future courses.
Please for the love of god dont take her class. If your opinion is different from hers even if your opinion is backed up by research she will give you a bad grade
paticipation mark 10% in total (discussion board about 12 times; many questions/time; require research articles to support arguments ) midterm and final were hard ( lecture, textbook, and redaings are tested; content and details in textbook heavily tested ) two papers boring lectures high expectations
Great at giving feedback for essays. Whenever I had a question, she would never simply answer it through the email but make me do a Zoom call with her for a simple question; essentially, she's no help at all. 95% of the test is based on textbook readings & don't buy the textbook, you can find a free (earlier) version online & it'll do the job
Do not take an online course with Naomi Koerner. She sounds so scripted and asks questions without giving answers to them. During every slide she does not explain anything and instead just tells you to refer to your notes or a video to understand what it means, instead of just explaining concepts as a professor should. It is very frustrating.
By far one of the rudest profs I've ever had. Said that there is no actual evidence for chemical imbalance theories. Gave me a trash mark for my paper on dissociative identity disorder that I did EXTENSIVE research on and was actually proud of bc she personally believed DID isnt real. I had to fight her for my mark. Still got an A but yeah.
Out of my 3 years at Ryerson, I was looking forward to this class the most. Ended up being such a disappointment. So many ridiculously hard weekly assignments (that aren't weighted anywhere near enough to be worth the effort it takes to do them) and she marks so. hard. I wish I never spent my money on this course. Btw, prepare to teach yourself.
Incredibly difficult tests and marks fairly hard
Dr. Koerner encourages critical thinking, which I respect and I think is really needed in psych classes. However, for someone that claims to love disorders, her lectures were dull and scripted. Cold and uncaring with students. Memorize the textbook back and front, because the majority of exam content is tb material which she does not teach.
Naomi Koerner makes the course unnecessarily difficult by grading papers and exams harder than it needs to be. She's also rude and cold to her students in the discussion posts. Not an approachable prof. Barely makes any announcements. Ask a question politely and she'll tell you to look it up yourself - thanks. Hard to pass with flying colours.
Ratings here make the course seem worse than it is. Lectures are dull but the critical content makes it a worthy course you won't find elsewhere. You NEED to do ALL external readings and make detailed notes on them esp the textbook. Online you can look up details u miss. Assignment is easy, so are exams. In person would be much harder.
I avoided taking this class since I began my degree due to Naomis reviews. She is honestly a good teacher. Sure, you need to do the readings yourself, but I found her exams standard for university and same with assignments. I thought she was a solid prof. The readings are content heavy, but not more challenging than past psych classes.
Not the best prof and comes off as rude during interactions. Test were alright since they were open book it was a lot easier however a lot of the questions came from details in the textbook. The essay did not have clear grading criteria and was marked fairly hard. The 10% participation discussion post were easy to do.
This prof wasn't as bad as I thought. I was intimidated by all the negative reviews of her. She may mark a bit hard especially on the assignment, but her exams were mostly fine. There is a saving grace though, the 10% participation. As long as you do the requirements for the posts, you will get the full 10%. It saved me and it may save you!
The class was totally asynchronous, we never had a zoom class not even the first day which is odd. I dont know if its due to online learning but class is not worthy nor enjoyable. You need to cite sources in your EXAM!! like who does that? She posts PPT instead of videos and does not make the class engaging :( so dissapointed.
Well structured online delivery.
Awful. Arrogant. Naomi is someone who thinks she is one way, but she's actually very different. I don't think she has any insight into herself, which is ironic since she's a psychologist. I would hate to be her client, she probably projects all her baggage onto them.
Tests were very simple psych material, read the material she gives and easy A. Assignments were exciting and she graded the material rather formatting. Answered emails within a few hrs, and gave useful feedback, straight to the point. Would love to take her class again.
Out of all my psych classes, this one was the worst. There were no lectures to discuss content, there is so much content including reading, discussion posts and doing research for those discussion posts. She is an extremely tough marker and is pretty rude about it. I don't recommend her for any class.
Meh. I literally read the lecture transcripts instead of watching because they were SO dry. I was not engaged at all. And I really expected a better grade on my assignment. The weekly boards were not exactly an easy 10%, but I suppose they were helpful in the end. Tests were fair, but getting us to cite sources for short answer qs was bizarre.
She was not very helpful in emails, I struggled to get clear answers in regards to assignments. Very tough marker, feedback was all negative and stated in a rude manner. This was extremely unfortunate as I was excited to take this class but was disappointed mostly attributed to the professor. It ruined the class for me.
Naomi is a very tough prof. Her tests are heavily based on textbook material. It basically feels like your teaching yourself the whole time. She has a blatant disregard for her students. I would avoid if you can. The content can be very dry, I finished with an A+ but had to work very very hard. A very heavy course overall.
she has very high expectations for work that is worth a small fraction of your grade. marks hard. isn't helpful when you ask her questions (often tells you to just research it yourself). ice cold personality. i would avoid, if possible.
I was initially excited to take this course as it sounded interesting. However, it really wasn't long before that excitement was crushed and replaced with despair. It seems like Naomi does everything she can to ensure you are struggling and overwhelmed. Assignments were unclear even contradictory and were marked very very harshly.
Definitely not as bad as the reviews made her out to be. The class was dry with no live/recorded lectures and just modules. The midterm/final was fair and more focused on the textbook than class material. Assignment instructions weren't always clear but she did respond to questions quickly. However, she was pretty critical when it came to feedback.
I would not say this was a difficult class, had I put more effort into studying I would have done a lot better (a bit difficult during this period). That being said, the issue with this professor is they are incredibly condescending when it comes to getting feedback on papers. A lot of reading, and the lectures barely cover what is in the text.
I was initially very excited to take this class. Dr. Koerner is very knowledgeable in the course content, but her ability to interact with the students left less to be desired. She is rude and condescending when providing assignment feedback. Assignment details are vague, and; therefore, can be misinterpreted. Kindness can go a long way!
Absolutely awful, prof does not seem to care about her students, rude in every interaction. Requires apa citations in her exams. Does not grade, weekly assignments got graded twice in the whole semester and still yet to receive a grade for the term paper from a month ago even though the course and exam is finished. Try to avoid if possible.
Amazing course content and textbook. Assignments are given with very vague guidelines and inaccurate rubrics that do not reflect what is evaluated. Tests and discussion posts are very straightforward. Enjoyed the course but would have been better if the instructor was more organized and available.
Naomi's class was delivered online with no lectures or lecture notes. Textbook is mandatory for tests and most of the content is from there. Tests however are not hard if the readings are done. Assignments are marked hard with no clear rubric on expectations. Participation is easy and a life saver as long you do it on a weekly basis.
the feedback on assignments is written so harshly, (the entire group chat agreed, not just myself saying that). she doesn't really care about your learning. I would have given her a 1 but she seems knowledgeable in her area of study, so I gave a 2. Unless you're a psych major that already gets a high gpa, I'd avoid her.
Prof Naomi Koerner seemed knowledgeable about the class content, but I can't say for certain considering that the class didn't have any synchronous components and wasn't interactive at all.
I disagree with the comments saying she's a tough grader. I got a 100% on the paper and I normally get 70s-80s on other papers. The exams were completely reasonable if you study the textbook. The only problem with the course is that the textbook readings are long.
This professor is not considerate of her students. If you reach out to her because you are experiencing personal challenges, she will disregard you and provide very little support if she even answers your emails at all. The course itself is very interesting and it is not difficult to be successful if you do readings, but the delivery is poor.
A+ student here: DROP THIS COURSE. you're teaching yourself the entire time. 2 papers, 1 midterm, 1 final. there is NO clear rubric or grading criteria for the paper. she gives disgustingly rude feedback. doesn't respond to emails. detailed and hard exams. this course was HELL, will bring down your GPA. essay-like weekly discussion posts. RUN!!!!
Although the class content is interesting, this professor makes it hard to enjoy. Avoid this prof at all costs, she isn't knowledgeable and doesn't respond to emails. All of her content is posted before hand and then she just doesn't do anything for the rest of the semester. Her instructions for assignments and rubrics are unorganized and unclear.
excessive amount of reading and expects essay long discussion posts. all content is posted beforehand at once, prof doesn't teach
The class is asynchronous and although you're able to email her questions or post questions in the discussion forum, the way she communicates with students is dispassionate, bordering unfriendly. She knows her stuff, but I'm not sure why she's a teacher. I regret taking this course.
The entire class is asynchronous and all her tests are based on the textbook so you're basically just teaching yourself because she isn't accessible at all. Her feedback on assignments are not constructive in any way and come off as just rude. This class will drop your GPA
Just don't take this prof
Content is good, but the class suffers from not having a live lecture/tutorial component. The format misses the nuances of each topic that might arise from actual discussion. It seems misguided to have students essentially teaching themselves such a foundational course. Feedback is a bit harsh but fair. Assignment rubrics could be less vague.
I was excited to take this course but Professor Koerner has made this class so difficult to enjoy. Her rubrics are vague and there is no real direction of what she is looking for. If you try to email her she is very belittling and rude, overall just not a helpful professor. Avoid at all costs, this class will bring down your GPA
Prof seems knowledgable but doesn't really teach since the whole course is in a self-taught format straight from the textbook. Her outlines could be a bit more clear, and feedback is vague and unhelpful
The only thing more dry and boring about this course is professor Koerner. she just comes across as rude in her feedback and marks excessively harsh.
She's not a good teacher at all, constantly tell you to drop the course if it's too heavy for you.very condescending and rude. Does not reply to emails. Will ask you to cite in the exams!! really heavily textbook based exams and all she does in class is reading off her power points. criteria for assignment is very vague and she's a very tough grader
Honestly she gives a "I don't care" kind of vibe which makes her lectures a real drag. Nevertheless the course is easy if you study the textbooks and do the practice questions at the end of the chapter but if you want to take this course because you are passionate about psych disorders, maybe take the course at a different Uni...
Very surprised by the amount of negative reviews! I had a great experience. The content covered in the lectures always sparked interesting dialogue, though it did seem to drag on at times. I would suggest attending all of the lectures, taking good notes, and definitely doing the readings. If you are not interested in psych, do not take this course!
12 Discussion posts that are like 500+ words each are due every week and are only worth 10% total (that's right, 0.83% per discussion post) and worst part is they're not graded until the rest of the semester. Otherwise, the rest of the course is quite manageable. If what I said makes you regret wanting to take the course, do yourself a favor.
Emailed me saying that she won't mark my paper because I was over the page limit. The page limit was 2 pages for a critical assignment, that was not enough to include my conclusion which made it go over two pages by a little. Very rude in her emails and does not give any help or assistance
If you're taking this for an easy A, don't. The content is heavy in readings and assignments are tough, but it's worth it. Dr. Koerner was kind and genuine in our email conversations. Her feedback on assignments can be seen as negative, but it's also incredibly constructive. I feel like I learned more from this course than any other PSY course.
She is extremely rude and passive aggressive, if you have any clarifications or questions she will just straight up tell you to check the course outline and does not provide any more information. Her lecture is also content heavy and will explain one part of the powerpoint for 40 minutes straight.
Very impersonal and boring class. Papers are unnecessarily difficult without clear outlines or expectations. She is a hard grader, and her feedback is extremely critical. The discussion posts each week require so much research for such low-stakes tasks. Tests Q's are all from the textbook- don't bother studying the modules at all.
Professor Koerner often begins w/ a class discussion/exercise before getting into the material. She promotes critical thinking by asking questions. No rubric for the assignment. Wasn't very responsive in emails, just quick to the point, and seemed aloof in her email etiquette. In-person, she seems fine but people might interpret her as harsh.
Dr. Koerner's lectures are very engaging and help you better your understanding on course content. She does state multiple times that readings are mandatory, and you will be tested on both lecture and textbook content. As long as you attend her lectures and do the readings you will do great in her class!
