she knows her stuff, but for god's sake, learn ENGLISH! as students, are told that if we have trouble understanding english, that we could suffer markwise for it. can't understand her at all. jeez, if i have take RUssian 101, she has to take english 101

i cant understand what she's saying
She's a good prof, she knows her stuff, and is always willing to explain further after the lecture. she is a little hard to understand b/c of the accent, but is still understandable. good explanations. friendly.
bruuuuutaaall...
She's very difficult to understand, but she thoroughly understands the material. She gives amazing examples that are detailed. She explains things when asked, though with some difficulty. She is thorough and available for questions. Her innocence adds a bit of humor, as well as her mispronounciation of words. Try to look past her accent and learn.
She's a good prof, but you have to really pay attention to understand her. She can be a bit unorganized, but not too bad overall. Assignments were very easy.
neato
She's a briliant mathematical mind, however her fairly thick Russian accent makes it difficult for the wealth of knowledge to be conveyed to the class, and for questions to be answered in class. Approachable for help after lectures and does her best to answer questions. Her accent is unfortunate, but overall a good prof.
no comment
This teacher is absoloutely amazing. She is great at what she does, very friendly and approachable.
If I wanted lectures copied directly from the textbook I'd sit at home reading rather than trying to understand her thick accent. Lowest lass average out of all Calc 050 classes. Find a Different professor if you can.
stay home and read your text, she does abosultely nothing of use. Her accent is too thick nnd it is soo difficult to understand and she doesnt teach well..so like i said stay home and read the textbook.
hard to understand
She is super helpful one on one and is really nice. Agreed her accent is thick, but c mon her tests are exactly the same year to year and honsetly if you are having this much trouble, its your own problem. Her lessons are from the text exactly and the work is self explanatory. Its an easy course and if you do badly its your own fault for not studyin
Her accent may be thick, but she is a very nice person. Gives out in-class quizzes that resemble exam questions and tries her best to explain difficult concepts.
People are way too hard on her. Yes, her accent is extremely thick, but if you actually go to class, you'll understand what she's saying after just a few lectures. Amazing in office hours, detailed examples in class, and USEFUL assignments. Wicked prof :)!
Her real name should be mother Russia.
Amazing prof to have for Calculus! Although her accent is extremely thick, you could not understand what she was saying most of the time, but honestly, her notes are all you need. Give out extremely useful assignments with exact or similar questions that will appear on your exams :)Very responsible and friendly to approach.
Hard to understand through her accent, but her notes made up for it! Excellent, clear, detailed notes made the class pretty easy. Overall a good teacher :)
Excellent prof! Although I agree, hard to understand, her lecture notes were AMAZING! They totally made up for the accent! Very fair assignments, and she was always willing to help if you were having trouble. Great prof once you get past the accent.
Not a bad accent, but didn't explain things clearly. She would do examples that were already done in the textbook, so I found her class fairly useless. She didn't write the exam, so didn't tune her teaching to it at all. There was no discrepancy for what was important and what wasn't. I had to get a tutor for the course.
Professor K. is friendly and nice however her accent and sometimes confusing sentence structures can cause many grievances. The textbook is your best friend for Calc 1000. Lectures are not mandatory, IMO but just read the textbook and you will be fine.
really nice lady, however she is very hard to understand. In addition, she is extremely good at math so she skips a lot of steps, leaving the class behind. I had to get a tutor for this class
Decent prof. Her lecture notes were good and the exams were fair. Her accent was challenging at times, but you got used to it. Ended up reading notes and the textbook in her accent!
She is a very nice lady, and is willing to help. I loved her personality. However, problem is that she has very thick accent - very difficult to understand.
Mother Russia. Some days it is literally impossible to understand her. You'll be learning about mattresses, not matrices.
Although she tries to teach, she has an extremely thick accent which makes comprehension difficult. Furthermore, after you get past the accent, you still can't understand the math because she can't properly explain herself. I did extremely well in this class because I attended a different section. Get out while you can.
Not helpful, Not clear, and Not a good time. Try to avoid her
Easy Exams
she has an extremly thick and hard to understand accent. once you can understand what shes saying its not that bad. she really knows her stuff and is amazing at math. she is approachable and tries to answer your questions. overall a good professor once you get over her accent lol
she explains lots of theory and fundamentals of the topics you learn. not super applicable and I found myself self-teaching. her accent is quite thick as well. I'd suggest another prof.
Found quizzes tough/tricky but grading is generous. She gives many bonus assignments and some bonus marks for answering tough questions in class. Won't get used to the accent until last month. Mid was okay, final was difficult but those bonuses got me through. No E-mail responses but answers questions after and in class. Can be funny sometimes.
Found myself using the textbook a lot, not just cause of her teaching but the material is hard. Follows the notes sold in the book store. Leaves plenty of time before exams for review and answering questions which is helpful, shows you that she really cares about the students. Had a couple of laughs in that class. Usually lets u out 10 min early :D
Every time I enter her class I almost fall asleep after hearing her talk for 5 minutes. Although I can tell she knows the material, her approach to the lecture is subpar and drives me nuts!!! if you have a choice to take calc1000 with another proff u can. I never showed up to any class, just studied the book and followed OWL.
If you get her, switch ASAP. I sent 100 emails over the term and she maybe replied to one? Her accent is very thick and dull like you can understand her but you don't understand what she is writing. Self-studying is the way to go. Her exams are from previous years so do them!! Literally, half the exam is copy and paste. O'Hara is a better prof.
Professor is extremely difficult to understand since she has a thick accent. If you ask a question she often doesnt understand the question and will give you an answer not related to the question. She writes her lessons on whiteboards which is useful. She also provides example quizzes and exams which are helpful.
great professor, accent can be tough to understand at beginning of class but you become use to it. Thorough in her lectures, puts up lots of examples to help understand material. She is always open to questions, very approachable. The bi weekly quizzes are tough if you don't keep up with the homework, try your best to not cram.
She has a very monotonous voice. There isn't much variation in her pitch, which makes it very difficult to pay attention in class. Attendance isn't mandatory at all, you can definitely teach the material to yourself if you choose to do so. Overall, she's a decent professor, and her quizzes are pretty easy.
Kiriushcheva writes and explains all the necessary information. As calculus profs go, she is a fine choice. A bit difficult to understand in the beginning because of her accent but you have your notes, classmates, and the textbook if you need clarification. She is fine at explaining things and exam questions are very similar to her class examples.
I literally couldn't understand a word she said. During class all she did was irrelevant derivations that werent relevant to exam questions. Just do past papers and quizzes and ignore what she says. Absolutely useless. Every class was a waste of my time and I would have ended the course with a higher mark if I only showed up for exam/quiz
Amazing prof! Lectures were easy to follow and her explanations were very clear. She is extremely understanding and caring towards her students. She is easily accessible outside of class and is happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have! Her quizzes were far from being unreasonable and reflected very well what was taught in class.
A really nice and helpful professor and teaches exceptionally well.
Very approachable and caring.
There are so many better calc profs. You cannot understand a word she says, her assignments are brutally long and happen once every other week. Classes are spent doing pointless derivations which do not help with any kind of problems you do for tests or assignments. BEWARE. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROF.
Chill prof but assignments are really long lmao
Horrific prof. Literally if you have any other chance find a different prof. You wont be able to understand her and she goes over very pointless stuff in class that doesnt relate to the test at all. She also responds very snobby in emails as Ive received one saying do you even read the assignment part when asking where u might find something
She seemed to understand the material but she definitely over complicated basic concepts which confused a lot of students. her homework assignments were ridiculously long and tedious, I find they didn't really help because you spend time trying to go fast instead of learning. If I hadn't already taken calc in HS then I would have struggled a lot.
she is an amazing prof her midterm and exams were fair and honestly were not hard, i took this class online and she posted all her lectures on there and there were videos as well. assignments were a bit tough but doable and were nice to do because you feel prepared for the exam and midterm. As long as you do a lot of past exams you should be good.
Not great.
So difficult to understand and does not explain anything clearly. She would frequently get mad at students for asking questions during class and would make mistakes when solving problems in lectures all the time. Did not seem to care about students at all and one time she even slept through an 8:30 lecture. Avoid at all costs.
Prof Kiriushcheva was very helpful in all aspects of the course. The course moves quickly so make sure you understand the material. Use office hours if you get confused and you will do well.
Well organized, very simple lesson. There is nothing difficult as long as you get used to the professor's accent. Every key point was listed in detail.
Doesn't reply to emails, all the lectures were recorded on YouTube.
Had her for tutorials. Did not understand a word coming from her mouth. To be fair the mask and the bad microphone did not help but her thick accent made it really difficult to understand. In my opinion the tutorials do nothing for this course anyways. We just reviewed homework questions.
Terrible at teaching, could barely understand her. Her tutorials and exam review sessions are a complete waste of time, and shes not very approachable, nor does she even try to answer your questions during class.
Calc 1000 was mostly online, but the Q and A style tutorials with this prof did not help. She does not respond to forums and her tutorials are largely unhelpful. To be fair she does respond to emails... even if it is weeks after you've sent them.
Dr. K is an amazing prof and wants to make sure you understand concepts not just memorize formulas and what not. Calc is a tough course, but you have to put in the effort to speak up if you need extra help, Dr. K is not intimidating and is open to taking up questions. Slow at responding to emails, but she is the course coordinator this term.
I literally opened the swap in ten minutes at the first class. Hard to understand what she was saying.
She is good at Calculus herself; her issue is her English, she's extremely tough to understand, and sometimes she doesn't understand you. You must be highly focused on understanding anything she says, or it will seem like gibberish. Another issue is her ability to understand what you're asking and to slow down and explain a concept from the basics.
The people claiming that she's hard to understand just don't want to put in the effort to pass the class and are taking it out on her when she doesn't deserve it. She helped me a ton and is not that hard to understand, as long as you actually put some effort into respecting people from other countries.
Her accent is quite thick, making it hard to hear what she is saying. There is no clear class structure and she no cohesion whilst teaching. She however will explain to you if you need help with a question. she is nice but dont expect to come to the lectures to learn anything, its all a self study course.
This course was very much self-learning, tutorials are only helpful in terms of review and going over problems, she doesn't actually teach the content from scratch. It's possible to do well but with LOTS of effort, prepare to spend at least 3-4 hours a week learning the content on your own. She was helpful in office hours the one time I went.
AM 1201B is extremely hard to understand as her accent is thick. Difficult course and had extreme weight on the final and midterm. Do not take this course.
Prof Kiriushcheva is very knowledgeable on the subject matter and would take time at the end of tutorial sessions to answer questions. I did find the midterms and final in this course to be fairly difficult. However, this was still a solid Calculus course which felt like a nice extension of what we covered in High school.
Very bad at teaching, her tutorials are sooooo tough to follow. She can be nice, but also really mean. Main concern is her teaching though, she just cannot stay on the same topic consistently. Her tutorials jump around here and there, makes it difficult to understand what the point she's trying to make is
Very heavy accent, extremely hard to understand. Does not explain concepts well and not approachable. Pick any other prof.
Took Calc 1000A with her and it was very hard to understand what she was saying and tests were unreasonably hard and I was barely scraping by with doing all the homework. Heard Calc 1000B is a lot easier so try and take it second sem with O'Hara or Ghorbanpour. They were great 1228 profs.
Great prof, very accessible outside of class. Very helpful and wants the best for her students. Her lectures are a bit difficult to understand without watching additional videos. I previously took APPLMATH 1201 with her and the tutorials were VERY difficult to follow along, but she was great with CALC 1301 in the summer. Recommend, mostly.
Worst professer of all time, didnt understand a word said for the whole semester. Very heavy accent brings questions that werent tought.
Heavy accent.
You're cooked.
Huge classroom + no mic + thick accent = can't understand what she's saying. Take it with Ghorbanpour instead (I hear O'Hara is also great).
Thickest accent imaginable. They really just hire anyone nowadays
I couldnt even understand what she said. I learned everything through my textbook.
Her accent makes it impossible to understand what she's saying so I had to teach myself the whole course. Choose another professor if you can.
Taking an online class with her eliminates the clarity issue and reveals that she is a good prof who explains concepts very well (much better than the prof I had the first time I took this course). The content was difficult to keep up with, but that's not her fault. She was very kind when I met her at the midterm exam.
Genuinely just awful. Not only does she have a super thick accent making her borderline impossible to understand, she does not answer her emails nor provide clear answers to questions asked during lectures. No exaggeration: everybody I know in her class has been skipping since midterms as her lectures are completely useless. Avoid at all costs.
Her lectures were well organized and clearly explained. She answer pretty well questions from students providing all the steps.
Very kind prof. Responds to emails quickly, helpful during office hours. One of the easier first year courses if you put in the work.
I HIGHLY recommend switching to another section before the deadline: - She has a very thick accent that makes it hard to understand her speech - She does not explain things well (I had to read the textbook during lectures and watch Organic Chemistry Tutor later) - We used this in 2024 (search on google): "Calculus Volume 1 - OpenStax"
Natalia is terrible at teaching, her lectures are incoherent. She's incapable of answering any questions. She also mumbles a lot making it hard to understand her and her accent. Just watch YouTube videos, read the textbook, attend tutorials, and do the practice tests and exams and you'll do fine. Anything but going to her lectures.
she might be brain dead, good luck
Really nice prof. If you actually go to class, you will do well in class. Always willing to answer questions both in and outside of class. Tests and exams are fair and tutorial sessions with TA are always well organized. Responds to emails quickly and is very caring.
Terrible teaching. Less than 10% of the class will answer iClickers correctly and she carries on without addressing it. Doesn't actually teach, just talks at you.
Yes.. it may be hard to understand, but she is very caring and the tests are very very fair.
Take the course, but just watch youtube lectures. I watched Professor Leonard lectures the whole semester and got by just fine. She is an awful lecturer. Any student getting through her class is self taught.
Not accessible outside of class. Does not answer questions properly, does not keep promises grade correction wise, does not reply to emails, does not do iclicker every class. Do not take this prof.
Very kind and caring prof. If you attend class, the content is taught well and evaluations are similar to content in class. Very fair marking and easy to talk to.
I stopped going to her lectures and my grades went up
By no means a bad lady but the lectures were less than helpful, mandatory I clicker at 8:30am was brutal especially when you're gonna have to leave the lecture and then supplement your learning elsewhere
her accent was lowkey so hard to understand, and i feel like her lectures did not help much. very understanding if you ask her any questions tho. assignments, midterms, and exams were not difficult though
Very difficult class, but Natalia's caring and understanding demeanour made it bearable. Come to class, pay attention, and you will do well.
Incoming med sci students - PLEASE PLEASE take Ghorbanpour instead for Calc 1000 even if his class starts at 8:30. Heavy accent, barely does any practice problems together in class (if does - uses advanced problems), uses board - have to sit infront of class and even then hard to see writing. Came out of this class more confused every time.
Made the class way harder than it had to be. The way she teaches is messy and unclear. She makes her tests SO HARD. I put in so much time and effort into this class, but still received a low grade
Please avoid taking her class at all costs. I don't understand her in any way. She makes things a lot more complicated than they need to be. Although she's trying her best, it's just better to avoid her altogether
I took her online summer Calc1301. I did not attend a single lecture and upon reviewing her recordings realised that even by attending it would be a waste of my time as she is quite hard to understand and basically only does questions. Midterm was so cooked she had to drop 3 questions, finals was fair, I would advise doing all the past exams.
Wow, what a semester... I have never been so disappointed by a professor. I am a math lover, turned math hater. This semester brought me so much pain and agony. Lectures were unorganized, useless, and a waste of time. She spent more time trying to set up iclicker than doing practice problems. Avoid this class if you want to do well in calculus.
This professor is actually the worst teacher I have ever experienced. I have gone to every lecture, taken all notes, and still don't understand anything. I have been watching another professors lectures and am understanding much better. She also doesn't give any practice so there's no way to tell where you're at in the course. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
You will probably not understand everything she says during lectures and when you ask a question, she probably won't know the answer. Definitely go to lectures but you still have to teach yourself most/all of the content. She pretty much just reads off her notes and doesn't understand the content on that deep of a level.
She is the nicest prof you will ever meet, but I can not understand a word she is saying in any of her lectures, especially at 8:30 in the morning. I was in her class for 1 day during syllabus week, and switched out of class midway into her lecture. I have friends in her class, and they just attend other profs lectures and accept the iclicker loss.
Her teaching style is horrible, and it is impossible to understand and follow her lectures. When students ask for clarification she is unhelpful and isn't willing to offer support. She relies on a chalkboard for teaching, making it hard to see and understand the content yet doesn't post any notes or lectures online. Do not take her class.
Lectures incredibly difficult to follow. Writes in an extremely disorganized manner on the whiteboard and doesn't really teach in her lectures, just starts going over random questions and expecting everybody to follow along as if they know everything. She speaks in a heavy accent too. Nice professor but a really bad learning experience.
i made the mistake as a bmos student to pick this class and i landed in her class which made things way worse than it had to be, i did not understand a thing after the first week n a half and had to resort to reading whole textbook chapters before going to class and also paying for external teaching. why do i have to learn before the real learning
I entered this course loving Calculus and ended with absolutely hating it. Not only was this class at 8:30 am in the morning, I had a hard time understanding her due to her thick accent despite being used to them and I could not understand her writing unless I was on the front row. I'm warning yall... TAKE APPLIED MATH INSTEAD!!!
