Terrible class. She was incredibly boring and never explained things well. She relied on her TA a ridiculous amount as well. I would not recommend her class to anyone.
I went to a public high school and "Talie" was the worst teacher I've ever had. She never showed up, rarely let us know where we stood or even what she based grades on, and made the class an extremely unpleasant experience.
I disagree with the previous posts. I thought she was a great teacher. Yeah, she was a bit unorganized, but you can't expect anything else from an eccentric philosopher. She is very very knowledgable and helpful and if you have any desire to learn philosophy at a high level, take Talie.
I had Talie for Feminist Social Philosophy and it was a great class. I don't agree with the negative posts about her. She is a great teacher with a lot of passion and a lot of humor. If you're looking for a fun class believe me, take a Talie class. You wont' regret it I'm sure.
I've had Talie for 3 classes and she is one of my favorite professors. If you can deal with the fact that she is really disorganized and very slow in returning work, and you love philosophy, you'll find that her lectures are very stimulating and she is a fair grader as well.
Intro to Philosophy. She's a lot of fun, knows her stuff, not very straightforward though. She tends to go on tangents. Very enthusiastic. Slow to return papers. Wants to know everyone in class and input from all. lots of group work, with group presentations. only 3 papers in a WE course! None more than 10 pages.
She's using a syllabus from summer semester and we have to make changes all over it. It's only a week's worth syllabus, so you can't get ahead, and she shoots down any questions you have.
she is a real nice lady and she is not unreasonable with the work load. she is very disorganized, though, so don't expect to get things back in a timely manner. this works out well, though, as the original syllabus gets revised a whole lot so it's easier.

Ok, she is a very interesting lady and she knows a LOT about her subject. The main problem I had with her was that she's very disorganized and took several weeks or more to give papers back. But there was very little writing for a WE class!
She is a very easy teacher but unorganized and not very clear on what she wants or what she is talking about.
Although she's very animated while lecturing, her comments only enhance the material if you already understand it. Don't like how many group presentations we do. And there is no discussion whatsoever, which seems contradictory to the basic tenets of philosophy.
Turned me off from philosophy. My motto: if a professor isn't willing to return a graded assignment/test within a week, don't assign it. She didn't turn things back quickly, so by the time another paper was due, we didn't know if we'd done the first one right. Being a 'philosophy professor' is no excuse for disorganization.
Talie is a very creative and knowledgeable professor and, if you stick with her, her insights will sometimes blow your mind. Definitely a philosophy major's philosophy professor.
Well, we didn't get a single grade back the whole semester until the day of the final, and I am not kidding. And she assigned 3/4 of the semester's work in the last 2 weeks. Incredibly disorganized to say the least. She can be interesting sometimes, but my advice is DON'T take her!
She was very scattered and did not help at all. She never returned papers never let you know how you were doing. Her final is crazy and there is no way to really prepare for it.
She is very enthusiastic about the subject, but she is completely unorganized, brings stuff to class in plastic bag, do not take for mode but might be interesting in her more advanced classes, all work was in last 3 weeks of class, notes incomprehensible, did not get ANY grades back, but ended up with an A somehow, very frustrating
Talie is very disorganized and extremely vague. There was no syllabus and she did not explain what she expected of assignments. She never gave back papers, so progress was unknown. She awarded everyone a midterm B because she was too lazy to figure grades (she admitted this in class). Her notes/lecture was impossible to follow.
Terrible. No organization. Her lectures are worthless, so disorganized you can't get a thing from them. I still haven't seen any of the papers I did in that class. Another thing: She is a "Deist/Atheist/Materialist" to the core, and if you are a Christian I would especially avoid taking it. We read nothing but modern liberalist garbage.
I took her Into. to Philosphy class, and yes, her notes have something to be desired, but she is very enthuiastic, and if you do the reading before, her lectures really help clarify everything. She IS a Christian and has made many comments to that effect, and is big into Women's Lib. It's all papers and reviews: no tests or quizes. Gotta love Ta
I am really interested in philosophy and religion, but the way she teaches is very abstract and she doesn't really make sure you understand the material. People asked me who I had for Intro to Philosophy and they said "Oh... sucks for you!" They were right. She knows a lot, but I hate her class because she makes something awesome just a waste.
Do not take Tallie if you actually want to learn something; if, however, you are looking for an easy A in a blow-off class, take her for a mode. She is very nice and very enthusiastic, but I have no idea what she wants half the time and class discussions are usually a waste.
talie is a nice professor...just not a good teacher. her notes are completely random and everywhere---they are also hard to follow. she doesn't give many assesments during the term (which is nice), but you feel unprepared when it comes time to write papers or take the final. you will be able to pass the class, but won't learn ANYTHING.
Very, very disorganized, not only with the entire class structure, but with the notes and discussions as well. She is very knoweldgeable and nice and is definitely more than willing to help you out if you are having any trouble, but you never know what she wants or what to expect. Overall a very nice professor though.
'Tallie' is a complete mystery to me. As is philosophy. I don't understand most everything she says. One day her TA taught, and it was like a breakthrough for me. So get help from the TA's because they know more than this woman. I have no idea what kind of philosophy we are talking about or what she expects us to know for our papers. Useless.
With Talie, how much you learn is COMPLETELY dictated by how much effort you put into the class. If you do the reading and put effort into understanding concepts (which at the intro level are very basic) you'll come out on top. Her lectures are only useful if you're preparing for class properly. She'll also help with papers & such in office hours.
Saying she's a bad professor would imply that she's an active professor. She shows up to a little over half the classes, doesn't assign much, and often forgets to collect the few things she does assign. This seems good, but your grade will be hurt by her incompetence. You will learn nothing from this class.
She is the most obnoxious teacher I've ever had. She goes off on a tangent at least five times per class period and half the time does not make sense when she's speaking. Don't take any of her classes.
I literally learned nothing in this class. If you are in this class, GET OUT NOW if you can. If you can't get out, READ and try to take an interest in the subject because if you don't then you will be like me and loathe the course. Talie is enthusiastic but terribly disorganized, creating a confused and worthless classroom atmosphere.
She definitely likes the subject matter, and is very enthusiastic in her presentation, but she doesn't use organized notes. Don't take her if you need powerpoint to follow along. She's pretty generous with the grading. You don't get quized, so if you just do what she wants, you'll get the A.
I had Talie for Intro to Philosophy. BY FAR THE WORST CLASS I'VE HAD AT TRUMAN! She is extremely unorganized and attending class is pretty much useless. She lost half of my "reading notes" and blamed it on me for not turning them in. She also decided 2 weeks prior to class ending that we would have a final, even though before she said we wouldn't.
She is really helpful and very excited to be teaching. However, she goes off on tangents often and then tries and squeeze things in. Also, she takes forever grading papers. You get points taken off if she doesn't agree with your view, which is really stupid since it is a philosophy class.
The worst class I have had at Truman. DO NOT TAKE! the prof expects you to agree with her on everything. barely got any grades back before the class ended. She was disorganized throughout the entire semester. she makes absolutely no sense. she is terrible at explaining concepts. I honestly learned almost nothing from this class.
Really nice, but very disorganized. Class isn't really mandatory, since she'll forget you were there. Very big on feminism-if you write feminist critiques, or mention Derrida, you're guaranteed an A. Reading is easy; not really required either. Helpful, but an easy A that you won't learn anything from. Seems biased towards females in grading.
Rarely returned papers and often lost work turned in by students. This was a major issue as the course is predominately based on these papers and other works. Often canceled class without notice, but had a strict attendence policy. Very knowledgable about subject matter, and very interesting, but also very frustrating.
Terrible class. Philosophy and literature barely touches on philosophy. I took it for LSP, but I have some interest in philosophy. Talie apparently has none. All she care about are her misguided views on the world, ranting and slanderizing everything she comes into contact with. Terrible readers too. Not difficult, but not worth it.
i had to background in philosophy when i took this class (take everything with grain of salt) the class quickly became a name drop/reference circle-jerk and spewing bs from every orifice. my mid-term paper was "The Topic of this Class is BS" my final paper was "Philosophy is BS" i understood >10% of the reading and ~30% of lecture but managed a B
Never returns papers on time and I had no idea what grade I had in the class. She never answers emails and is rarely in her office for help
Frustrating class. Papers will not be returned to you in a timely manner, so if you like feedback for future papers don't expect any. Tons of reading and long papers. You will learn interesting tidbits of philosophy, but probably shouldn't take her if you are a PHRE major. Easy A, but expect a headache from the dishevelment.
Although she can be somewhat scatter-brained, Professor Alexander is funny and enthusiastic about teaching. I really enjoyed her class! There was a fair amount of reading to do, but it's all interesting. A pretty easy and fun A!
I learned a lot in this class (though didn't know much to start off) and Professor Tallie was a very kind- she always tried to converse with students who came early to her classes. She did give our papers back very late. She made our final optional, but I didn't know 2/3 my paper grades. If you do the reaings, it's an easy A.
The most disorganized teacher I've ever had. She did not have a syllabus for the first month of class and assigned gross amounts of reading. She fails to coherently described any of the larger assignments. I would avoid taking a course with her.
While she was an enthusiastic teacher and taught well, she was the most unorganized person I have ever met.
Pretty nice teacher, but NEVER even responds to emails. She'll email you, but never reply to ones sent to her. Lectures are beyond comprehension, Not sure what is going on in her head,. Extremely slow grading and disorganization. Avoid if possible
She was really nice, but returned papers months late with not much feedback. Read the book if you want to be successful and be nice. I feel like she gives you a grade based on how much she likes you and how much you participate in class. So unorganized!! Literally all her papers were in a plastic bag... But she's passionate.
She's a nice person. But the class is not good. Her notes are all over the place and impossible to follow. The assignments are difficult (because no one has a clue what's going on in the class) and you don't get any feedback on them. If you are just trying to fulfill a mode, avoid this class and take something different!
This class was the WORST. She is so disorganized and teaching style is terrible. If you like a structured class, don't take her class.
She is very scatter brained and has no organization to her class. If you are an athlete, she does not show you any mercy if you have to miss class due to an athletic event. Also, expect to do a lot of ready every night. She claims she assigns homework, but never assigned it. Also expect no concrete syllabus. I personally did not like her.
Professor Talie is a nice woman, but this class is the worst one I've taken at Truman so far. Just make sure you do the readings, take really good notes in class, and go to her office hours as often as possible. I ended up getting an A, but I think it was mostly because I went and asked for help so much.
Professor Tallie is a sweet lady, but not the best at teaching. Her lectures were confusing and I was lost most of the time, but I kept up with the text and managed an A.
Oh my... You must read the sections, and directly ask her what the homework is. Nice lady, but shoots notes like a shotgun.
Although she's hard to understand sometimes, she's a really great professor who cares about her studebts. Do the long (but easy) readings and attend class, and you'll get an A.
Her lectures are all over the place. By half way through the semester, you could tell that hardly anyone was reading the assignments anymore because it was so pointless. Attendance was supposed to be mandatory but she doesn't notice (I missed at least 5 classes). Returned our first assignments (turned in September), 2 weeks before finals.
I had her for 2 classes in a row and it was one of the hardest things I've done. She assigns massive amounts of reading and expects tons of participation. You can tell she's really passionate about philosophy, but struggles explaining difficult concepts to students. I got by because I was really interested, but if you aren't, take someone else.
Professor Alexander ("Tallie") is possibly the most disorganized person I've ever met. She is very passionate about philosophy and tries to impart that onto her students, but her scatterbrained thinking and random lecturing only result in mass confusion. She grades things once in a blue moon, and her students never have any idea how they're doing.
Professor Talie is very kind, and she is approachable and helpful in office hours. However, her class will have to take some precedence. Talie assigns numerous readings and homework assignments on top of each other, which makes the class very overbearing. To do well, sit in the front, ask questions when confused, and use your resources!
She does NOT explain the material at all and is so disorganized. Office hours were completely useless. I was in this class and SO many people were dropping out left and right as soon as they saw her "teaching" style. I dropped too. Don't take this teacher. If you're planning to take this course AVOID THIS PROF.
Lectures were very disorganized, it was hard to tell what was ever going on, taking notes was basically impossible. Doesn't even have a desk in her office, its just piles of papers. Tons and tons of reading. Would recommend a different professor if at all possible.
Dr. Alexander is nice and is clearly knowledgeable about her subject area. However, her lectures are incredibly boring and are hard to pay attention to. If you are not genuinely interested in Philosophy, and ready to put in a lot of work, I don't recommend taking her class.
Natalie Alexander loves what she does. It's very easy to talk to her if you have to ask her questions. Make sure to visit her during her office hours. With that being said, there's a lot to be desired with her teaching. Lectures are boring, she gets off topic easily, readings are not fun to read and beware of essays. Much easier to get a diff prof
Professor Talie is a kind person and loves what she does, but isn't a good professor. She assigns an unnecessary amount of homework that only counts for 5% of your grade. She doesn't put any grades online and when asked for a rough estimate of my grade she told me she had no idea. Her lectures are also extremely boring. Don't take her!!!
She is very unorganized with assignments and lectures. She never graded anything. I did not know my grade until the final grades were put in. I never understood what she was talking about during lectures. We got about 3 weeks behind in class material so at the end I truly had no idea what was happening.
Dr. Alexander is a nice person but an awful professor. She writes diagonally, wherever convenient, and if she forgets a point she'll cram it in the tiniest section three points back. Her lectures are the primary learning material and they are absurdly easy to derail. She doesn't update your grade until final grades are posted, roulette style.
just really bad
Very nice lady, but we ended up at least 3 months behind in course content because she would never hold class. Poor communicator - never checks emails and is never in her office. The readings were so boring and uninspired. She makes you do discussion threads on blackboard that count for a majority of your grade. Lol dont take PHRE186 with her.
This class was a nightmare because of professor Talie. She is often late to class or doesn't show and cancels office hours so you can't get one on one help. We turned a paper in and it has been two months and she still has not graded it. Yet, she assigned us to write another paper that is due on the last day of class. I have no clue what's going on
Although Talie is very knowledgeable about philosophy and clearly loves it, she does not know how to teach. She falls behind the syllabus, and I have learned absolutely nothing in the class. However, you will do well if you go to the review sessions and actually study for her tests.
She is a sweet woman who is very passionate about philosophy. She knows her stuff but is very disorganized and spacey as a professor. We were about a month behind the syllabus because she would always go off track during lectures. She never got grades back to us so I had no idea if I was doing well or not. The class is do-able but difficult.
Professor Alexander is the most disorganized person I have ever met. We got very behind on the syllabus and would often get upset whenever someone asked about it or what we were doing for the rest of the semester. I was constantly stressed out while in this class and had hours of homework each night. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Prof. Alex was the most difficult Professor I have ever had. We ended up WEEKS behind in the syllabus and overall it was super confusing. I met with her twice to ask for help, and she told me only myself and two others had met with her from that class. Even though I turned in very little I got an A. Visit her office if you take her
Although she is not very organized and does not get grades back very fast, Professor Alexander is a great professor. As long as you pay attention and do the work she assigns, it will be easy to get an A and you will learn a lot about philosophy. I really enjoyed seeing how much she enjoyed philosophy and it made me enjoy it even more.
I absolutely love professor Talie! She is a great teacher and this is the second time I have taken her. She is a little disorganized, but she makes up for it with how much she tries to work with you. She is really nice when it comes to cutting slack and letting you do things at your own pace. I would take her all the time if I could!
I've never had a professor who is more disorganized. No matter how nice she is, it shows an extreme lack of respect for students to not grade anything before finals. If you take her class, expect: 0 grades or written grading criteria, no email responses, 0 following of syllabus, vague assignment directions, and useless lectures. Avoid!
Prof Talie really does love philosophy and her students, but PLEASE listen to these reviews and try to get another prof or class. Talie is extremely disorganized and a terrible communicator. I emailed her several times over the course and rarely received a response. You will be confused and even if you like the content, it will be difficult.
Professor Talie is nice, but this class was very disorganized. Instructions and due dates were often unclear and she never answered emails or graded assignments. Talie knows a lot and could be fun, but the course left me confused most days and disappointed in the end.
The professor is very kind, and she clearly loves the topic she teaches, but she does not teach it well. She struggles to use Blackboard (but honestly same) and is very unorganized/frazzled. It is the third week or so into class and her Blackboard is still set to last semester. I really wanted to take this class, but I never know what is happening.
its the 3rd week of classes and so far nothing has been turned in because her blackboard is a mess. me and many other people have tried emailing her and she just doesnt respond AT ALL. she is very nice but its borderline impossible to understand the class when shes so disorganized. cant wait for it to be over
For the record, this woman is very nice. However, she is the most unorganized professor I've ever had. She strayed from the syllabus by the first week, submitting assignments was unclear, and her lectures were more of a ramble than anything. This class was supposed to be in-person and she wanted to go online for the "foreseeable future." No Thanks.
Okay umm... I'm currently sitting in class with Professor Talie and only 3 out of 18 students are here. If that doesn't tell you something well it should. She is very nice, but that doesn't mean nothin lol. I have one more month left of class I have emailed her 7 times with no response and I don't know my grade. This class is just a mess.
Do not take super disorganized you will never know your grade its very weird to turn in assignments never answers emails and many more issues with the class only good thing is you can miss class. Just take a different jins though not worth it
Talie is a nice person, but this is the worst class I have ever taken. SUPER disorganized. No idea what is going on. It's about a week from the end of the school year and she hasn't even posted a single grade. Most in the class haven't gone in weeks. Every time I do go to class I think "why did I come". She randomly assigned a final paper due nx wk
The only positive is that the prof is nice. We had absolutely no idea what was due/when it was due. She would spend our class rambling on things that were not at on intro class level. There was absolutely no way to expect what our final grade was. I got zero feedback on everything. Any attempt to clarify what was due was met with more confusion.
Natalie Alexander is by far the worst professor at Truman State. She is wildly unorganized, and will skip class more often than you. She is impossible to follow and very scatterbrained. Additionally, she is never available outside of the classroom, so you can hardly put in extra work.
So disorganized and did not follow the syllabus. We were mostly assigned to read outside of class and talked about it in small groups. Presentations were also in groups. She almost never lectured except to tell personal stories. Papers were long with no criteria. Still not sure about my grade in this class even though it's finals week.
