she doesnt kno how to teach, she makes her own notes and reads them in class for us to write them down, doesnt take in consideration that were writtin them down and keeps on going, does not use the text book at all,she doesnt tech she just reads the notes through out the class, she is nice overall but her class is boring and i dont learn anything
No Comments
HEAVY on lecture and goes continuously from beginning to end with little to no emphasis at what she wants you to be getting from her notes. She's clearly very knowledgeable on the subject, but seems to struggle with how she wants to teach. She gets better as the semester progresses, but for some it's likely too little, too late.
I would not recommend this teacher to any student because she is not a good teacher. All she does is read her notes and stands in the front of class. She reads with no confidence whatsoever. We never use our textbooks and the tests are not based on our knowledge
All this teacher does is stand at the front of the class and read her notes. There are no powerpoints, handouts, ect. during class. This class is super boring.
So she is a nice lady overall but she pretty much just stands in front of the class and talks for the entire time in a monotone voice. Its hard not to fall asleep. You can learn alot but you pretty much have to teach yourself after she gives you the review for the test. No book required. She takes what she wants you to learn and tells you.
Writing intensive class. 2 papers to go with the tests(essay/short answer mostly)Tests are straight from notes(IMO you don't need the book)but you must pay attention. Exam reviews are based on participation. Only gripe is she just dictates notes and seems awkward. Other than that, you should pull an A if you work. You can tell she knows her stuff.
I took her class back in 2010. She is very nice and good looking. She demands that we pay attention to her lectures but that's good because that's where the exam comes from. Gives good reviews for exams.
I took her class the Spring of 2012. She is sweet and soft spoken but demanded that we read the books. She really knows her stuff. She gave reviews for exams and we did two power point presentations, and a paper. Her class was not harder than most college classes. I recommend her.
Shes nice, but teaching is NOT! I've never had a class that I dreaded coming to more than hers. She doesnt use eagle online even though the class is hybrid. She completely changed the course. It was nothing like the description. If you actually enjoy learning do not take her! Shes hard to get in contact with the writing assignments are over the top!
I absolutely loved her! EASY CLASS! Attendance is not mandatory BUT, the power points only include the topic and she will describe it verbally & that is what will be on the test. MAJOR extra credit points! Her tests are a piece of cake! I would recommend her! :)
I learned a lot about Mexican American culture. She explains the assignments clearly in class, but some students only came occasionally and then got mad at Natalie because she wouldn't post description of the assignments online. Writing intensive. I signed up to be in the classroom 3 hours a week and that's how much time we spent in the classroom.
I just fell in love with this class. Lots of reading and lots of writing. She made me work so hard, but it was all worth it. I became obsessed with mexican american studies.
Hard grader, not interested in helping you, does not reply to emails, if she does it will be the morning of. Do not recommend her to anyone.
I loved her! Lots of writing, lots of reading. She is quiet, soft-spoken, and sweet, and she looks like J-Lo. She really knows Mexican American culture. If you don't like Mexican culture, stay away from this class. But if you care about it, then she is the professor for you.
This is really a lecture and book based class. If you come to class, take good notes, and read, you will do fine. She explains writing projects really well in class but she takes too long to respond to e-mails. I loved her!!! Too bad she doesn't teach other classes at HCC, I would take any class she offers!!!
Yes, she expects us to be in class every time. She doesn't like students who are always late or leave early. Make sure she knows you. Read a lot, do not fall behind on writing projects. She is really helpful if she thinks you are a serious student. And it's true, she doesn't like lazy or disruptive students.
I do not recommend this teacher to anyone. All she does is talk, no lecture notes just power points. Don't take her class unless you want a bad grade.
I guess this is college. The class is not that hard; I tried to keep up with the readings and took notes in class and I did okay in exams. She has a beautiful smile. I sat in the front, that helped me avoid distractions. Paper was average; exams were kind of easy. She spoke a lot about women's history int his class.
I should have listened to the comments, history was my favorite subject and she sucked the fun of that. You are better off reading from the book her power points are just topics that is all very little discussion in those topics. Ill go hang myself now. Thanks garza!
I took her for HUMA at Southeast. We had to read 2 books, we had to write 2 short papers, and we had to present 2 power points in class. She's really good but she speaks too low. I had to sit at the front to listen to her. She really knows her stuff. I heard she's teaching History at Southwest. I'm going to take my Histories with her.
She really knows her stuff. Yes her class can be kind of boring at times, but were not in high school anymore. Actually her class was kind of easy. Make sure you come to class and take good notes, keep up with readings, and do your work on time. I personally think she is great. I wish she taught night classes so I could take more classes with her.
Good teacher, you really don't need to take notes, her review had all you needed to know on the test, as long as you don't fall asleep and put forth a little effort you should be good
SHE IS AWESOME!!!:)))) she really knows what she is teaching!i didn't like history but now i do! i'm taking her again for HIST 1302!her exams are not hard, you just need to study and take good notes. she uses powerpoints, and she tells you what you need to know. she is very helpful and kind!
Only talks through out the whole class period. she is really nice but it gets a little bit exhausting just listening to her speak
Class was super easy but you have to study for the tests. Her tests are not multiple choice but she gives you a review that is EXACTLY like the test so if you study you will be fine. You have to do 2 papers, if you answer all the questions required for the paper you'll get a A for sure. You don't need a textbook! Ill be taking her again for hist 2
I usually can't pay attention in boring history lectures, but Garza encourages you to participate, making it easier. grading is very clear, three test and two papers. You will have to put work into studying for the test, but she gives you a review sheet with the exact answers, so as long as you put time into studying there's no reason to fail!
Her class is so easy! For the tests you have to write a long paragraph on key terms and then a essay, but she gives a review exactly like the test. JUST STUDY!!! start working on the review as soon as you get it, it can be time consuming. Explains historical events really well. Don't skip class, you will miss a lot of info.
If you're lazy and dont want to study then dont take her class. Her class is really easy if you just study and do the essays right. You will get a easy A all you have to do is study. I would take her again for sure. This class really helped my GPA. You dont need a book. Attendance isnt mandatory but you will miss a lot of info
Great class! I learned a lot from her. Be prepared to study hard. She'll give extra credit if you participate in class. Test have specific criteria that you need to know. Tests are essay form with additional definition questions.
She's a great teacher. How it works she likes to teach you, but she likes in return , you to read and participate in class so it can be more interactive.
Was not an easy class for me, her lectures are boring, she goes over something once and moves on to the next, tests are not multiple choice, based on 30 key terms, she picks 10, you answer 5 of them 1 paragraph each. who, what, when, where, why. 3 essay questions, she will pick 2, you answer one. 2 Essays you have to write about based on 2 novels. GL
Great professor and such an incredible class (Mexican American History)! Read, take notes during lecture, participate, and study - youll pass. Tests are NOT mc, theres only 1 reg and the final exam, 3 essays (2 are over books). This class inspired me to change my career route a bit, that's how much i loved it!
All of the test will be short answer and essay. Develop good studying habits and you might pass. She is a really hard grader so have your writing skills on point when writing assignments come up and on test.
RECORD HER LECTURES! ITS GOING TO HELP SO MUCH FOR THE TESTS
There is a lot of things to do. You have to read 3 novels, and write 3 major essays. Plus you have to go to the public library for research project and make another essay. There are 5 quizzes, but there is also essays accompanying it. Not much explanation in the syllabus how to get about with the projects and assignment. Exhausting class.
All I have to say is that she like to say "uhmmm" alot.
Tests are short answer + essay, had 2 book analyses during the course. Lectures are long, the "uhm's" bothered me a bit. Wants you to participate in class conversations. A nice teacher but really tough grader.
Took her online class and was disappointed. She did not respond to emails on time, her tests were timed with not enough time to complete a whole essay and questions. Her grading was tough and was not really that clear on them. Did not like her class at all.
I took this class online and one of my biggest frustrations is she is not easily accessible and does not respond in a timely manner. Her syllabus clearly says she will respond to emails within 24 hours but that is not the case. Shes grades hard and does not let you know how you can improve.
She is sweet and softspoken. You really have to come to class and take good notes. No multiple choice esmas; you have to write essays and short answers. She really knows her stuff and she cares a lot about us.
I took her for 1301 & 1302 she is great! Take very good notes during lecture! It will help you for the tests. The tests are short response but, she gives you a review sheet. STUDY the review. The review has 30 terms and 3 essay questions. She then chooses for the test 10 terms (you choose 5 to answer) and 2 essay q. (you choose 1 to answer).
She's literally the worst professor ever to take online. She doesn't notify you when the deadline is (which is bad for someone who has a job and a life outside of school). The homework load is ridiculous, and she doesn't give good feedback. If your work is bad, it's bad and vice versa. I'm already ready for this class to be over.
Class is really boring.!!!!!! test are mehn just don't take this CLASS!!!!!!
If you're going to take this class it isn't an easy A. Although, she doesn't give homework and there's barely anything due other than the 5 major grades. She gives three exams and gives you exactly what's going to be on the test, the catch is that she doesn't give you the answers to the questions. If you're willing to study, take her.
Please avoid her for online class. She swears History is the most important subject you'll ever take, therefore she grades you harshly on your essays and discussion posts. I've always gotten good grades, but she is something else. She'll critique you, but not constructively - how does she expect me to improve when her grading is harsh?
best professor. She explains the requirements clearly and her reviews are really helpfully.
History has always been an easy subject. My two main complaints with her is, she takes forever to grade - it's the end of the semester and I still have no grade on two essays and two tests plus the final. Another complaint is her harsh critique. She tells you point blank if it's bad or good, but offers no explanation.
So easy to pick up the stuff you need from her lectures. The tests are hand written, but they are easy. You pick your own questions. One project that wasn't hard at all was ALL of the homework the whole semester. Cool class, cool teacher.
This was a very challenging professor. She gave us two papers to write and three tests. The work was not too difficult but you have to work to get an A. If you need help you can ask her, preferably after class because she sometimes responded late to emails.
Dr. Garza marvelous. She really has a way of lecturing that connects and is straightforward in getting the material that matters into your brain. She structures her tests in a way that challenges you to think critically about the history you are learning about. She is open to your interpretations in your own words, she is awesome. Take this class!
She expects you to be an adult and handle your business accordingly, she lays out everything on day one so hypothetcally you could do all of the assignments at the begenning of the semester and refine them as it progresses. She gives great lectures so it makes it easy to listen to her and shes hot, so you retain the info because your focused.
Her lectures are interesting. Takes attendance. Grades assignments late, her critiques are very harsh. We didn't use the book, 1 class presentation, 1 major essay, 2 other writing assignments. Her exams are not multiple choice. I signed up for Prof. Patterson but he had to drop all his classes and I ended up with Prof. Garza.
Professor Garza has an interesting and educational manner of teaching Mexican American History II. The lectures are very informative and the historical content of Mexican American's history is incredible. Also, participation is encouraged among the students in class to give their opinions in a respectful manner. Great group project assigned.
I did not use the book at ALL, wish I wouldve known before I purchased. She gave 3 exams 1 was the final, she critiques harshly. Make sure to include every detail if you want full credit for the question. 1 presentation along with an essay that had to be 3 pages. Her lectures are interesting though.
She only grades the three tests she gives and a group project if you don't do great on those you won't receive the grade you would like. She graded until the very end of class.
Took her for Mexican-American history and enjoyed the class overall. All quizzes/tests are based on her lectures and NOT her slides. I suggest you take note of everything she says or you'll probably fail the tests. Every test required a short essay (except 2 which were book analysis). She's not a tough grader and her lectures were interesting.
It's imperative to listen and take notes on her lectures. Whatever's on the powerpoints won't cut it. Her tests are open-ended questions with no multiple choice so get ready to write. She isn't very harsh on grading and the class is pretty easy if you pay attention and do well on the few assignments she takes grades for.
Tests are divided into two parts: one multiple choice, short answer, and true or false, and an essay portion (they are easy though). Besides four tests (including the final), her syllabus also includes a research paper, quizzes, and discussions. Took her online class for the record.
Readings 2 books they are interesting no textbooks tho. Weekly journals strict deadlines but the grades wont be added until after semester over. Must attend class to keep up with lectures you need info for journals. There is a video script project be prepared to work. Grading is not updated on time emails go unanswered- beware
For online class. 2 tests + final with: mult choice + 500 word essay. Reqd to read "The Osage Murders" book + write a paper on it + a Oral history paper (3-5 pages) + a weekly quiz or discussion. Hardly posted her pwpt lectures, so I used quizlet to study and didnt use a textbook at all. She is nice as a person but hardly replies to emails sadly.
Alot of lectures and writing journals. End of semester is a video project research and presentation on computer. Not hard but complex. There is lots of writing in this class. If you take this class you must talk to the professor do not email it wont get responded to
She never responded to emails, or direct messages on the discussion boards. She was not super familiar with the online portal, and messed up posting assignments correctly. The assignments would be posted the day they were due for the most part with no heads up. The lectures put me to sleep, basic pp slides with talking is super boring.
Enjoyed material discussed in class opened my eyes to alot. The hardest assignment was the final project but this is college so it should be challenging.
Easy class. Her exams are all written, but if you research the words and ask her to explain the essay questions from the review sheet and just study that you are good to go. The papers are fine and she gives a lot of extra credit opportunity. Even tho she's a clear liberal and her classes are based on that point of view, she is a good professor.
For online, I would urge you to be prepared to work extremely hard especially if you have other courses at the same time with this course. Her exam reviews are not easy as she will make you spend time to read and watch videos that may eventually not count in the exam. I chose her for the 16 weeks course yet I struggled so much with the workload.
I had never struggled with History until i took her class. you are never allowed to check the quizzes or test so you don't know what you missed or if its even accurate
Shes a great lecturer. It pretty easy, listen to the lectures, read the assigned reading and you will do well. If you slack off your grade is your own. I would definitely take another of her courses.
Genuinely awful at her job. Doesn't respond to emails, will go multiple weeks without publishing ANY work/lectures or communicating with the class at all, and you'll be really lucky if you get anything graded before the end of the semester. The upside is the class is super easy and the workload is minimal.
We purchased a book used it 1 time! We had test over the lectures so you have to read and listen along with taking notes to pass the test! They were made up test by her nothing you can look up online and you don't have lot of time! She was so soso slow with grades it made me mad! She also seemed to be a confused on lesson and etc.... Humanity 1305
Unorganized
Very disorganized; will post her assignments late but still expect you to complete within unreasonable deadlines; give you only 25 minutes for a 25-question quiz; three exams within a 5-week class, each comprised of 2 essays; expect you to read a book and write a 1000-word book analysis within 3 to 4 days; does not response to emails; harsh grader
Dr. Garza is great. You can tell she cares about her students. YOu write a lot but that is to be expected. Even though the class was online, I felt like she knew me as a student. Not sure why people say anything bad about her, unless they just thought they were still in high school and this would be a blow off and not college.
I only got a C, but that's because I didn't prepare. Thought I could just guess or google my way through, but you can't. Once I just did the work assigned, I brought up my grade. She was understanding and I want to take another class with her, probably Mexican American history.
Good professor, her lectures aren't boring. She gives out minimal work but a lot of essays or analyses.
Her class is very easy, the only thing is paying attention to her lecture is critical for the history analysis assignments she gives out.
As a student with 4 classes, she did not make it any easier with the required work. Our final was multiple choice, true/false, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and numerous short answer questions. With 25 questions in total BUT you only had 30 MINUTES to finish. You could not pause it or restart it, she also gave you a whole lot of busy work.
She was the WORST professor I have ever seen at HCC. She notes participation when you view her recorded lectures, however, it is somehow okay for her to fall behind in grading our work. She gives lackluster instructions while also being a ridiculous grader. If you can avoid her, PLEASE DO. I was not aware of my grade until the semester finished.
I LOVED Dr. Garza's class. Don't listen to the reviews saying doesn't care about students and their issues--- she gave us two days grace WITHOUT PENALTY on every assignment except the final project. She always responded to emails. If you didn't do well in her class, its because you didn't make an effort and you're mad she didn't hand you an A.
Very strict on following rubrics, lots of reading, and lengthy video lectures. Group work was mandatory. Due dates were not clear and made it difficult to keep up with assignments. OK professor but you have to really focus and read a lot to keep up.
She only has 4 quizzes and many discussions which she grades so hard... like why is she teaching here and she don't even explain why she's giving out low grades for discussions. You're better somewhere else.
If there is a higher rating on other Mexican- American professors, take them instead. This professor times all her tests that are 30-31 questions with some short answers on a 30-minute timer. That is not enough time to take a quiz and have enough time to answer. That is one minute a piece barely per question. She isn't honest. I don't recommend her
She was a very tough grader.
5 question quiz every class on the assigned readings, along with a group discussion and writings for said readings. 3 major assignments including the Final assignment. She never responds to emails and is kind of rude. she is not a harsh grader. There's a Two Day extension after the assignment is due and after that the highest you can get is a 70.
The quizzes were easy and short, and there were a lot of group discussions. We had three projects, including the final, and she graded them very harshly, which really brought down my grade.
Ms. Garza was amazing and everything you want in an online instructor. Pay attention to the video lectures and take good notes and you will easily pass this class. The assignments are fairly easy and the discussions do make you put thought into the course. Other professors should take notes on how to teach their online course from her.
Harsh grader. I got A's in all my classes, there should be no reason why I got a C from her's when I followed the instructions and the grading rubric down to a T. Her feedback on why she gave me the grades she did was not positive nor encouraging. I still don't fully understand where I went wrong but I do not recommend taking her class.
Although I got a low grade in her class it honestly does not reflect at all in her person. Ms Garza was great and she truely does want the best for her students. Im assuming most of these horrible reviews of her were from her online lecture because even when I was failing her class for a bit she checked up on me and asked if I need help. Would take
There's a lot of reading, but it's college, what do you expect? I love her class discussions, the way she sets it up is really good, making students talk to each other and then share what we said to the rest of the class, wish more teachers did this because in my other classes barely anyone talks. She's also very caring. Best teacher I've ever had.
