Tries to make the class interesting with real-world examples; Course slides are filled with errors that she expects students to figure and correct on their own. Assignments are tough...
she is a very bad prof, doesnt explain well and in the same time gives weird assignments that no one solves except 2 big nerds -well knows in the class- , Natalie I am sorry to say that ur the worst, worst than Mariette Brando :)

I have never had a worse instructor in my life! She has no idea how to explain and communicate material and yes... giving an impossible assignment and midterm on the same day GREAT IDEA! Love that Sponge Bob Square Pants!
Terrible professor. Totaly confused during lectures, notes full of mistakes
She can't TEACH, so what the hell did we pay all that money for!
try teaching instead of trying to screw students over
Terrible! She teaches one thing, the assignments are on another and the eidterm are not related to either. How are we supposed to do good??? Slides are full of little error. Wastes a lot of time with intercactive learning.
Horrible prof. Feels like you're taking three different courses. One with the lecture, one with the assignments, one with the midterm, and none of them have anything to do with the others.
Horrible Prof. Natalie, get your slides straight, figure out what your gonna try to teach us and put THAT on the assignments! Obvious that it's her first time teaching.
I'd write something but its all been said.

The course is hard, but what did you expect from 2nd year? The only people who don't like her are the ones who want to be spoonfed everything, whereas Dr. Goto actually makes you think. Stop whining, and try and use your brain by yourself for once.
waste of time and money. avoid her if you can.
a nightmare. slides full of errors, unfair marking, completely paranoid and thinks all the students are against her
It's Goto! Run for you life! She's still new at teaching, hopefully she'll be better the next time.
Yes her course is challenging and boring...but even MIT students find it hard! It's not a reflection of Prof Goto's teaching!! She clearly puts a lot of effort into preparing her slides (and yes, there is the odd error, but she's HUMAN people!!!) cont'd
cont'd: The material is boring, not the prof!! Not many profs will play Spongebob in class ;) Bottom line: To those of you writing such cruel, thoughtless comments, come to your senses and direct your anger where it belongs-at the course, not the prof!!!
Class is boring but what can you expect from thermodynamics. Prof Goto puts a great amount of effort in making it interesting. The assignements are hard, but if you put time and effort in them and understand them a little, the mid-terms will be a breeze.
She's more lost than I am :/ She was the first person to break something in the laboratory.
I dunno why you guys think assignments are hard, to me they seem very easy. I found that first years assignments were much much harder. Plus i dont think shes such a bad prof.
Had her for 2131 and 2136. Her assignemtns were terrible. But I heard she had made them easier this year and that her notes are better. Extremely unprepared for her first yr of teaching.
i like her - she's cute. she explains things really well. she doesn't rush through things, and is extremely good with answering e-mails and forum questions. very picky marker though.
She's a good prof for a brutal course.
She could make the class fun, but does she i don't think so. Sponge Bob, Duh. Since when did everyone in the class became a total moran. That will be a day when cartoons teach us physical chemistry.
She is confusing and her slides are confusing with confusing errors, making me confused all the time. Confused with everything, everything got more and more confusing!!! The confusion continued and spiralled out of control!
Generally confusing lectures and doesn't teach that well.
Her notes are very clear and so are her lectures. She can be funny sometimes. The midterms are of average difficulty, but she gives you marks for writing out formulas and if you dont, you end up losing marks (which can be bad).
She is the best prof ever. Hands down. So helpful and easy to ask questions to. She is clear, concise and fun. She's hilarious too. As long as you are paying attention... Midterms are average difficulty, but always fair. Study and you will do well.
All she did was give a guest lecture, and I've NEVER been so lost in my life... It wasn't clear, or organised. She just can't convey the information effectively!
did not make phys chem any easier!!! Confused us with random comments.
She taught two lectures on NMR in our class as a guest prof. and it totally killed everyone on the final exam. Everyone just instantly lost 10% off their mark. Watch out for this prof, guest speaker or not.
All tests were fair. Very helpful, always quick to respond to questions, forum & emails. Would rather do assignments on paper than online, since you can only write the final ans& it must be exact to get full marks or a 0!Very nice prof &very smart. Almost too smart to be teaching such a brutal class. Do all the assigned work and you will do fine.
overall good prof, you can't go wrong with goto, just do the work and you'll do fine. i haven't heard of anyone better than her at teaching chm2132..go to class!! her notes are wonders!
A pretty hard 2nd year science course, but Prof. Goto was very helpful after class and her notes were very clear. Online assignments were a bit tricky, but the midterm and exams were very fair. In my opinion, one of the best science profs.
hard course, but dr. goto did all she can to make it fun.. if you attend the lectures and do her online assignments, you'll do fine. always try to get the class involved, although most times its just a chill of silence. funny moment: she lost her train of thought, said the exact opposite of what she said 2 seconds earlier.. then said 'psyche!'.. :P
This prof is soo nice, unfortunetely they gave her the worst course to teach. The only problem with her teaching is that she does toooo much theory (all theory) eventough her exams and midterms are all mathematical problems. I think if you do her online assignments youll be fine. I wished i practiced more problems (not from courseBOOK unhelpful)
fair tests, attend classes, take notes...no surprises given material presented in class
she is very knowledgeable, makes course relatively sensical but the only way to succeed with at least a B+ is to study almost every day for this course by reading the lec notes and doing the homework and go to every single bloody class b/c once you leave things for the last minute you ARE DOOMED and it would be impossible to catch up.
Nice and helpful, I am glad to have her as my prof
She's very clear about the material and knows it well. Her midterm was similar to past midterms, but her final exam was much more difficult and unexpected. At the end, she normalized the marks anyways.
She did the best she could with extremely boring subject matter. I found her class interesting only because I like this kind of stuff. Her final exam was BRUTAL! everyone left with looks of horror on their faces. Dont let the midterm or her online assesments fool you. Study all of her notes inside and out you'll do fine.
She does her best, but her lectures are still really boring. Exam was unexpectedly BRUTAL - mostly on stuff that we barely looked at in class. Thank god for the bell curve!
Understand and apply in problem solving. She is a tremendous help one on one and incredibly patient.
Had her for Physical Chemistry. One of the best profs I've ever had! Very clear, great online notes. A bit difficult, but if you study you can make it though.
She's a really nice professor and quite flexible, but you have to keep up with the course (don't fall behind). Her lectures are just pretty boring but her exams are always very fair. If you ask her questions she will answer them very well!
Her style of teaching like a T.A. should be left to the TA's. The old school style she accuses the rest of the academic world of doing, (Giving a normal lecture) is what she should be doing instead of spending entire class periods on a few questions.
Physical chemistry. The course is hard, but she is extremely accessible for help and posts all her lecture and tutorial notes online. Provides lots of practice material and wants you to not only know how to do calculations, but more importantly, understand concepts. All her midterms and final are very fair. She's a great person :)
She's such a sweetheart and really cares about her students understanding and doing well in the course. Always there to address questions and answers almost every single one posted on the VC discussion board herself - even the night before a midterm. Sample midterms are similar to the actual ones so study them thoroughly!
I absolutely loved this prof! Really helpful and I loved her teaching style! Her exams were very reasonable! I would love to have her as a prof again!
CHM 2132 Love her style of teaching. Her reading quizzes help to test what you've read and are done prior to attending class so u have knowledge of what she will be talking about.Although the material is difficult her way of teaching makes things more understanding. Also her tests closely resemble the material learnt in class.
She uses a question-based teaching style (Top Hat Monocle, reading quizzes before class, etc.) that I personally find extremely effective. Midterms and exam reflect what is done in class, there are no curve balls.
She deserves a higher rating! She's amazing - very helpful during office hours (extremely nice too), cares very much about your learning and knows every student's name. She focuses mostly on theory, but her notes are really clear. She's responds to emails fast and posts on the discussion board. One of the best profs at uOttawa!
Her classes aren't very exciting, but she is very clear. Do all of the online quizzes as they really clarify the material. Her exams are fair, given that you understand the material. She's willing to spend as much time as you need in office hours.
A real piece of work. Her on-line quizzes are overly difficult and a designed for you to do poorly until she explains later. Her Final was overly difficult and the midterm contained material that was not discussed until after words. Unreasonable markings scheme puts to much emphasis on the more difficult material that she goes over quite quickly.
The most brutal first year exams you will ever have at uOttawa.... With that being said, however, Prof Goto is very nice, kinda quirky, and overall, a nice person. She does rely too heavily on the online textbook quizzes, which, being marked by a computer, are not fairly scored... Not to mention she doesn't give expectations for her exams...
Great prof.. very good teaching method ... do the work and you will be fine !! pay attention to assignments and examples in class
Probably the worst prof out there. Her lectures are really basic and the level of midterm questions dont match the level she teaches. Avoid her class if you can
Dr. Goto is really nice but the problems she does during the lectures are a lot different from the ones on midterm. So do the online assignments and homework from textbook.
i thought this prof was terrible, her lectures are painful to watch she is the most boring person i know. she way over complicates things, and her midterm exams are way harder and different than the basic boring things we discuss during class. cant express how much i dislike this class
She's a great professor and overall tries hard to ensure student's success and understanding of the course but...her midterm is nothing like what she teaches and will tear you to pieces with absolutely no mercy. If you manage to see this post before actually attending her classes; don't be an idiot and underestimate her. STUDY, STUDY AND STUDY.
Boring and monotonous but approachable and available to ask questions. Fairly poor at explaining problem solving strategies.
What happens on the exam is nothing like what's touched upon in class. Very dry lectures.
CHM1311 is a hard course to teach. Offers help whenever she can even at random times. Extremely care for her students and very nice in person. Do the assignments, and pay attention in class. Must read textbook to no tomorrow, even though it is a given for this course.
Her final was agony - it was BRUTAL. Nice enough prof, but if you want a high grade, I wouldn't sign up for her section.
The course was extremely difficult, however Dr. Goto tried really hard to make herself as available as possible if you needed the help. The assignments were helpful and she answers the discussion groups on Blackboard almost always. Even the night before the final. She's a really nice, helpful and overall great prof, but the course just sucked.
Phys chem is a really hard class. Dr. Goto does her best to explain concepts and is very helpful but again, the subject is difficult. The midterms were fair but difficult, same with the final. Class is kept engaged with frequent questions on "Lecture Tools." Pretty good as a prof.
This prof is exactly the type of person that etaches you 1+1 and gives you an astronomical question on the test or final. she is not the best at explaining points and likes to joke around to no ones benefits. Your best bet is to study alone and try to pick up what you can cause the course isn't the easiest and she really isnt the best at helping.
She's a teacher trying to teach her best but her best isn't simply cutting to her midterm. Puts really easy example/sample questions but slaughters you with 7 page all written equation-based format midterm/exam. You can't blame her too much because all UOttawa chem profs make the exact same midterms/exams with little adjustments or differences.
Believe me she is not that bad. Her first midterm was a killer with like a 50% average. But I felt that her second midterm and final weren't that bad. Just do the suggested questions in the textbook. I got an A and I am not really that smart of a guy. Ace the labs and the mylecturetools as well as assignments and u can do really well.
She is a really great prof. If you go to her office hours, she won't hesitate to give you a hand with anything you need help with. Make sure that you do the tests from previous years, as a lot of the questions on the midterms/exam are VERY similar to those. Study hard and do the practice questions from the book and you will rock this class.
VERY GOOD TEACHER WORKS HARD AND HELPS ALOT EASY A FOR BOTH THE CLASS WORK AND HOTNESS
Nice lady, horrible teacher.
Super nice lady , however she has an amazing gift for taking simple material and making it extremely confusing. Her practice midterms and challange textbook question are a must.
Very easy but she has no idea what she is talking about and doesn't respond to emails.
Terrible teacher to say the least. She can make the simplest concepts difficult, the assignments dont really improve your understanding, tests are nothing like what is asked before. Overall terrible experience and wish I dropped it. If you have a choice then do not take her. If you have no choice wait, other classes usually get a opening.
She goes through the theory so you don't have to deal with the confusing textbook. Attend class, pay attention, and participate with LectureTools. Then go home and do ALL of the recommended questions, do ALL of the assignments. It's a lot of work, but not difficult. Easy A+. Midterms were more than fair and covers all of the basic concepts.
Boring lady. Class is easy, tests are hard.
-Really nice and helpful professor - always open for help and to talk to - midterms are really fair and should be easy if you just follow up in class - demonstrations are cool and help understanding of material - Great prof and and a good course.
Clearly outlines what she expects you to know from each chapter, gives solid problems from the book, covers mostly relevant material in the DGD, and on midterms indicates EXACTLY where we covered the material (lecture, textbook, online assignment, lecturetools). She is so helpful at every step & makes such a boring class interesting and funny.
Her lectures and notes are way too easy compared to the midterm and those 6 hour long online assignments dont even help a bit. She is helpful but that is only if you understand everything and her questions are like two chemistry questions mixed and you will only know how to answer one... so yeah she is the worst!
Dr. Goto has amazing notes. She also monitors the discussion board and is always ready to answer our questions. Her expectations from us were crystal clear and it was very easy to do well if we did the practice problems assigned. Her online assignments were really useful because they were relevant to the material taught. She is hands down the best!
Dr. Goto is the loveliest lady ever. The lectures can get pretty dry sometimes, but she makes up for it with her slightly humorous jokes. She is very kind and clear during office hours, always willing to help you succeed. Midterm questions taken directly from slidesmastering assignments and very similar to previous years.
Professor Goto is such an amazing professor and cares greatly for her students. She is always more than willing to provide extra help during her office hours and is even flexible with accommodating her office hours to your schedule. She takes exam questions straight from the textbook and Learn Smart Assignments. Midterms were hard, final was easy.
Lectures are much easier than what's on the test and are most often quite boring. She's a really nice lady and does her best to help but isn't the best at explaining all the concepts.
If you took grade 12 chemistry and understood it, you will definitely get at least an A. Otherwise you probably should have taken CHM 1301. If you only look at her slides and the examples she gives, to study for the exams you will do well because THEY ARE THE SAME QUESTIONS! Textbook is almost never needed.
Professor Goto is by far one of the most amazing professors at U of O! She's so nice and extremely approachable! She always tries to accommodate your schedule and explains everything until you finally understand and have new found confidence in the material! Pulls questions directly from practice problems so if you do them you'll get an easy A!
She's a very nice and approachable lady but she's not very good at relaying information or keeping students engaged. If you don't love chemistry her course is a challenge.
Ms. Goto is a very nice lady who knows her stuff. She's certainly one of the best Chem profs. Even though, all she does is read off slides, but she does a fantastic job of explaining. Taking notes in her class is helpful but not an absolute requirement.
Mostly highschool review and she knows it so she goes very quickly through some of it. Gives lots of chances to boost grades with online assignments and participation.
She really is a sweet professor, so nice and extremely helpful. She monitors the discussion board like a hawk, making sure she answers all questions. She does her part as a prof, all midterm questions come from her notes and the suggested problems so definitely take the time and do them. To do well you really need to understand the theory.
Goto was a super sweet prof! She makes her lectures exciting by doing demo's in class. Be sure to keep the participation portion of your mark, it's easy marks! Go to her office hours, she's there to help you! Know your theory inside and out, tons of questions on those. Practice the hard questions on the assignments, the class ones are too easy.
Goto is a really, really nice prof, but I feel like her midterms are very long. Not hard, just really long and hard to finish in the time needed. The final was easy. She tries really hard to keep people engaged; she's just a very slow paced lecturer. Do the practice problems. All the questions are from there and the homework. Also, Connect is ugh.
The teacher is great when it comes to giving help she would answer my emails super fast even late at night. The midterms are very long and hard to finish in time, the question are too complex and have multiple parts which is makes it harder. The grading is great they try to give you as many points as they can. The online assignments saved my grade.
Extremely friendly and approachable woman! Your success in the course is based on how well you know the equations and formulas used in class. All test questions were based on what was taught in the DGD rather than Mastering or in-class. She is always available for office hours and gives hints as to what type of questions will be on the tests.
Great prof! Tests were challenging and made you really think about the material, but were manageable if you studied. GO TO THE DGD's -- the questions on her tests are copy-paste from what the TA's teach in them. Use Mastering to get a feel for the concepts, and practice the recommended problems to get a feel as to what you'll be evaluated on.
Seriously, sweetest prof at this university. She really wants her students to do well. Material can be dry depending on what your interests are, but she does her part and more, making the lectures fun to go to!
Dr. Goto is a very nice lady and is always there for you, but she gives a lot of useless assignments (learnsmart) based off the textbook along with other calculation assign. Her lectures are pretty long, boring, and makes you sleepy. If you're willing to work for her class, then you'll get As. Don't buy the book, just the online kit.
Great prof. Cares about her students. Expect lots of online homework. Tests are reasonable and the questions are very similar to those found in the assignments and tests from previous years. Regular attendance is necessary as she uses lecture tools questions to take attendance.
Nice and friendly prof personality-wise. Lectures can be at times quite boring, sometimes going over the slides on your own is way more helpful than attending lectures (especially true at the end of the semester). Very generous and reasonable when it comes to marking. A lot of online homework which isn't difficult, just time consuming (easy marks)
Dr. Goto is a really nice lady. A good prof too. Good slides for the lectures. Lots of homework. The connect assignments are a bore.
Really nice person but lectures can be boring. A lot of online homework, not overly difficult but can be very time consuming. Go to class because there are lecture tool questions that count for participation marks. There are empty and annotated slides. Exams are fair but study for them. Do not need the physical textbook. Buy online package.
I found her exam questions very fair and it was easy to get extra marks in her class with things like the online homework/assignments. As for her actual teaching, she runs the class more like a DGD than a lecture and sometimes fails to get all the material in, so you're stuck learning it yourself. Nice prof overall.
Goto is a very nice professor however she isn't good at conveying the material to the class. Lectures are quite boring although it doesn't help that I wasn't particularly interested in the course content. Midterms and exam are tough but mastering chemistry and in class participation are mark boosters. Assigned textbook problems are a must.
Dr Natalie Goto is one of the best profs I've ever had and I guess the only one so far to fully exploit the resources and technology available while teaching. She really tries her best to explain the material and support her students. Her exams are fair and reflect the material taught in class. Follow her slides and even the demos!
Dr. Goto is awesome! Go to class, do the suggested problems from the textbook as many times as you can and the tests will go really smoothly. The midterms were so fair. Honestly, if you do your part, its an easy A.
She is a nice lady who cares for her students. Tests and finals are fair. I enjoyed the demonstration she does in class sometimes, especially the time she let us eat marshmallows dipped in liquid nitrogen. She does lots of examples in class.
Interesting lectures with useful slideshows. Always posts slides before class, and then completed slides (with her solutions to examples) after class. Very helpful in office hours and readily available. Free marks for participation and relatively easy online homework. Over all she's a great prof.
Good prof. The class itself is very boring and basically an extension of a physics class, but Goto makes it more interesting with application examples. Textbook is a must, comes with online homework that is a mark booster. Midterms were VERY fair. Do the suggested problems and this class will be a breeze.
She has her classes more like a DGD Q/A... does problems in class and minimal amount of theory. The problems help you solve for homework questions. DO her recommended problems!!! She loves to reuse questions from mastering, her notes or the textbook! Keep practising and its an easy course.
Overall she is a decent prof. I wasn't the greatest at chemistry before but I'm feeling a lot more confident about the subject after her. However, you cant expect an A without working hard in her class. Im pretty sure I spent the whole semester doing chemistry but in the end it was worth it. Go to the DGDs because they helped so much.
Goto was a great prof! Kept me interested even though Im not the biggest fan of chemistry. Her tests and exams are super super fair if you study. The assignments can be time consuming but she gives you a hint for each question. Really want to take her again!
This is a tough class so be ready to practice and do lots of textbook problems. She explains things well and does lots of examples which help a lot. Make sure to redo assignments as they are good practice for the tests. The midterms and exam were hard, so make sure you study well. Grading scheme is really fair though.
Very nice prof! Posts all the lecture notes with the solutions after each class. Echo360 gives you up to 5% extra. Always do all the questions and you'll be fine.
She is a hot and lovely lady, always gives extra 5% credits to students. Love her
Really good professor, give a lot of credits.
Goto is a good prof. At i was not impressed by her teaching but after taking notes and actually paying attention my marks improved. If you are willing to work hard you will definitely get a good mark.
Professor Goto is one of the best professors I have had in 4 years at uOttawa. She really cares about her students, and if you don't understand something she will clear things up for you. CHM2132 is not an easy class, and she definitely makes you work for your marks, but if you're willing to put in the effort, you'll do fine.
Since this class was a review of old material, she really didnt explain the content. For someone like me who didnt learn the material in high school, it was really difficult to follow along. She would just assume everyone understood and talked a mile a minute. She's really nice and helpful if you go to her but I felt like I really didnt learn much.
Great prof! There were 2 midterms. If you do better on one of them, the higher midterm grade will replace the lower midterm grade. She tells you what sections from the book you need to know. No need to read the book, but do the problems at the end and the DGD probs. Don't opt out of the online HW it helps and it boosts your grade. 100% recommend.
She's a good prof, go to class she uses echo 360 which is (if you choose) worth 5% of your grade. She gives a lot of bonus marks literally 15% of your marks is free. The midterms and the final are easy to do well in. She made the course pretty easy to do well in.
Natalie Goto is a solid choice. She gives lots of easy credit to ensure you do well in her class. I was guilty of never attending lectures and not preparing for midterms/final exam, or this class wouldve been an easy A+. I highly recommend taking her.
She was a really mundane lecturer - spent a lot of time on very basic concepts and almost no time on actual difficult concepts that were tested. Can't really blame her because the class was not very bright and needed this though. Nice lady, not a fan of the teaching. Still an easy A+ if you're good at self-learning.
Lecture feel more like a high school class or a DGD- she goes over simple concepts and stretches them out to fill the lecture slot. Uses interactive learning to make you do simple problems during the lecture. Assigns problems out of the textbook but I didn't do them and still did great.
Overall, it was ok. Her notes are well structured and are posted online (you don't really need to take notes, she writes the essential info on the slides). Basically gives a 5% freebie for participation. Has paper assignments (mandatory) and online homework (optional). Opt out of the online homework (Wiley plus); it's really not worth it.
If you take phys chem with her, make sure to do all of the recommended exercises because problems that are similar to those come on the midterms and final. The midterms were fair and a 90 or above is very doable. The final exam was very hard however. To get an A+, you must aim to get high 90s on the midterms to have room to mess up on the exam.
Dr. Goto is a genuinely caring prof. She does in class labs which help relate the content to life. Her course has many different components which allows student to improve their grades in various areas. Sometimes she does not teach the course material as needed but rather just expects you to know what she's talking about which can be challenging.
Decent prof, but I wish she'd spend more time in class on the tougher questions rather than just teach basic concepts. DGD was more helpful. The assignments were really tedious and the second midterm and final were pretty hard but participation and wileyplus were free marks so I can't really complain. Labs were horrible but not her fault.
Ok prof. Her powerpoint notes are posted online and are all you need so don't bother taking notes. Participation is 5%, basically free marks. Assignments are harder than what is seen in class. Opt out of online homework; I did fine w/out it, not worth your time. Do recommended problems in textbook and redo assignments to prepare for exams.
Prof Goto is very quiet. I found it hard to pay attention in her class. She taught the simple stuff in class & then had challenging questions on assignments/midterms. However, she is fair & gives you the chance to boost your mark through online assignments, written assignments and participation. The lab portion was a mark booster for me as well.
One of my fav profs, you have to work hard for your grade though! She's always willing to help and clarify concepts!
Pretty normal chemistry class. Goto is very smart and knows what she is talking about. She cracks a couple jokes here and there and does in class experiments, which is fun! If you enjoy chemistry, you will enjoy this class. In terms of studying, look at the previous exams that she posts, they are helpful. Also opt-in for Wiley, it's easy marks!
I personally found this class to be quite difficult (but that had more to do with me than the prof). Often covers very basic concepts in class and then gives difficult examples on midterms and assignments. DO THE RECOMMENDED PROBLEMS TO SUCCEED!!!
Explains her slides and uploads them online. Easy marks (5% of grade) could be received through attendance or as a choice could be pushed towards final exam mark. Her teaching ability is really good, and overall can explain material well.
She is a good prof but her voice is so calming that I zoned out a lot during the lectures. Also her writing on the slides can get a bit messy and hard to read. Midterms were okay, but mine were all on saturdays which sucks.
problems in class have nothing to do with exams. your much better off doing problems from the textbook and the practice exams. the subject wasnt hard so it made it a not so bad class but she has a way of saying things so unclearly. i relied exclusively on the text to learn. however she's very nice and wants to help you succeed and her dgds are good
Professor Goto is a nice person and is always available to answer any questions. I found her lectures super boring and it was really hard to listen to so I ended up reteaching myself a lot of stuff. Overall a decent professor, not notably amazing but also not terrible
She is a good prof. She posts her annotated slides right after the lecture, she responds VERY fast when you email, she posts past midterms that are easier, but very similar to the real midterms. Go to class, and take good notes of what shes saying cuz she doesn't always write everything she says. lots of focus on sapling but its a mark boost!
Professional, smart, and great at teaching. Sometimes does in class experiments. Lecture notes are online and are annotated. Labs arent managed by her.
Lots of assignments, but I think that is the same for all profs teaching the course. She's a nice person, but her explanations often didn't make sense and she rushes through examples. I found the midterms to be very hard.
material taught in the lectures isn't what shows up on the midterms/exams. used my grade 12 chem notes to study because her teaching style definitely isn't for me. rushes through topics and doesn't stop for questions. class examples are simple and they don't go over homework. homework doesn't cover midterms though, but worth a lot. good luck :)
This prof has everything to give the perfect course. However, she doesnt do the extra mile to help her students. Exams are not very representative and are very tricky. This class could be easier on us if she actually helped her students with more material and ressources. She also rarely responds to emails.
Goto is amazing! For an online class, this was easily the most enjoyable one I've taken. The way she explains the content is relatively clear, and she gives assignments out every week which is really helpful for exams. Her exams actually reflect the topics we've learned so she is a very fair prof.
Honestly, her lectures are so monotone, she rushes through most of the concepts and has sort of a degrading tone towards students that ask questions. She never responds to emails. I literally had to use my grade 12 notes because of how crappy her teaching style was. But she gives you the most opportunities to raise your mark.
very monotoned but easy A
I've always sucked at chemistry but I feel like this prof made it worse. We had real labs with full-on 30 page reports when other sections just had to complete some checkpoints in an online chemistry game. Oh and the gap between her lectures/homework and the actual exams in terms of difficulty is just insane.
Lectures are poorly put together and difficult to follow. Information surrounding midterms is needlessly convoluted. Success in this course is going to boil down to how well you can guess what will be on the midterms and exams. Sucks that this is a pre-req course for so many degrees. Take another prof given the chance.
Avoid!!!
honestly terrible. says test questions are based on homework and past midterms but will pull up with something completely new every time. most people drop out lol wish me luck for the rest of the semester, if this isn't a requirement don't take this class!!!
Avoid!!! One of the worst professors. Lectures are very confusing and the midterms are really hard. Things we learn in class and it the test are two different things.
Shes very organized but rushes through everything in her lectures The questions on midterms are literally from outer space and not past assignments So even if you study and attend classes its really hard to pass this so avoid if ur looking for a high gpa
She is not that bad but her tests are hard. She rushes through everything as if we have already learned it and the assignments are so easy that you feel ready for midterms but then the midterm will be with such different questions.
DO NOT take. Bad, unorganized notes/lectures and has a condescending tone towards students that ask questions. Does not reply to emails and midterm questions are 1000x harder than homework and in class questions.
Midterms from previous classes were way easier than the ones we actually did. First midterm i was so confident and got smacked in the face with my grade. Literally just gave us stuff we didn't practice. Other chem classes even had their midterms open book. Literally take anyone but her.
Her lectures feel very slow, so they can be difficult to listen to. She also skips through a lot of the details during lecture and her solutions to questions can be hard to follow. Don't recommend if you find it difficult to learn on your own. She was the only chm prof to do closed-book evals this term & our class averages on the midterms were 40%
This is the worst chemistry class I've taken. Lectures are very slow and not descriptive at all. Homework was the only good part but they do not reflect the midterms or exams AT ALL. No amount of preparation will prepare you for anything. Class average tells you everything you need to know. Do no take.
I think a lot of people are shocked by first year chem and tend to blame the profs. Prof Goto was my gen chem teacher in first year and is my current phys chem teacher. She's clearly an expert in what she teaches and will answer any questions in detail. She's a very easy marker and will boost your mark if you email her and make a case for yourself.
As a first year student, I had many challenging courses during my first semester. What could have been a very exciting first year was utterly ruined by Natalie Goto's Intro to Gen. Chem. course. She explains subjects in a way that makes them 10x harder to understand, gives stupid midterms and is a very poor proff. Find another one, its not worth it
Lectures did not teach me or help me in any way to complete homework or feel prepared as they were hard to follow with her seeming uninterested and rushing though topics. Midterms feel like they've been designed to be impossible. Only redeeming quality is that her sequencing lines up with the lab portion (+ part marks)
Midterms were pretty difficult. The questions were very different from what was taught in class and her teaching style was not my favourite. The exam definitely was easier than the midterms though, which was a good thing. The labs (which she didn't teach) and the Achieve homework assignments are definitely why I got an A in CHM1311
This course was the hardest course I had during first term. I did the homework, I attended the lectures, and I asked questions. But still, I found the course really difficult content-wise and professor-wise. SUPER lecture heavy; I found it hard to sit through her lectures because of her uninspired and dry-cut teaching style. Homework is marked.
I really liked her teaching style. Its true that she wasnt too fond of answering questions during lectures but if you went to her office hours she would clarify all the questions you had and was super nice. Dont slack at the end! I got high 90 in the midterms and slacked on the exam and my grade dropped to A. Overall a great class, do the work!!
Listen to me when I say more than HALF of people who took her class in the fall dropped it. 42% midterm class average, and she said it was "typical" of first year students. Homework is marked too (???????????????). Her CHM1311 online course single handedly makes you rethink your life choices and wish you started taking care of cows instead.
This professor isn't as bad as everyone claims she is. Lectures are recorded and the homework is really helpful! Do it yourself and keep trying to get the right answer rather than relying on other students for answers. Also, dont ask dumb questions or questions that were already asked because she might get mad. For studying use the homework.
Professor Goto was very lackluster and did not appropriately put in effort to teach CHM2132. The class involved watching narrated module videos, followed by a quiz that involves calculations (which are not taught in the videos), as well as "select all that apply" questions that would award no partial marks. DGD's involved completing assignments.
I could see how the module-based teaching approach can be annoying for some, but otherwise this prof is very knowledgable and organized. If you struggle with independent learning you might have some trouble.
she's a nice person, but cannot teach at all. the content is hard in itself, so it does require extra independent study, but as a prof she shows no sympathy and doesn't go the extra mile when her students are very clearly struggling. her practice midterms are NOT representative of the real assessments
Natalie Goto was organized, taught clearly and her lectures had the perfect amount of content as well as some practice questions throughout. Her midterms and final were very fair (if you did the homework and attended lectures you should do well). I do not know where the negative reviews come from, as she was one of my better professors.
Goto is a great chemistry prof! Provides organized online notes and her topics follow the same order as the lab component. Explains clearly. Dedicates a review class before each midterm/final. Homework assignments are useful and are on the platform Achieve (graded but easy to get over 90%). Her evaluations are fair (no surprises).
Phys chem isn't an easy class, but Goto honestly does her best to make sure you do well. Class is set up so you watch videos on topics before class and class is focused on problem-solving (which I personally loved). Midterms were tough, final is easier. DGD assignments + quizzes help your grade a lot, so do well on them! Know the theory + practice!
Not as bad as everyone says. Tends to overcomplicate problems when explaining, and you definitely have to be prepared to reteach yourself some topics. The final was easier than midterms.
Solid first year professor. If you do the homework and attend the lectures (which she records and makes available on live-stream) then you should do fine. Study mainly doing the Achieve homework and then maybe some of her own lecture questions. She reuses questions from homework and lectures constantly, so just practice.
Prof. Goto's lectures tend to be a little boring but she explains what you need to know for each exam. Her exams were fairly easy and straightforward, they reflected the homework and past exams. She is very accessible outside of class, she responds to her emails and discussion board very frequently with helpful feedback.
Used an incredibly ineffective asynchronous learning course format. She expected 10 minute videos where all she talked about was theory to replace actual lecture time. Videos had no math in them yet the majority of her exams were only math based. Assigned many quizzes and assignments every week that were all time consuming to complete.
She seems like a nice person but it's crazy how she thinks students can understand anything from 10-minute (asynchronous) videos covering full units, in which she primarily goes over theory-based concepts and barely any problem-solving. All I can say is she is not a hard marker and gives partial marks for anything written down that's somewhat right
Expects you to learn everything yourself online, and has a class where you go over harder concepts that don't impact learning. Textbook is heavily used and post lecture quizzes are terrible and don't reflect material on the brightspace. Plus you are required to attend a dgd with a group you make. Overall terrible experience with this prof.
Grading scheme is very generous (35% for quizzes, assignments, participation). Midterms and final were fair, and her grading is also generous (part marks everywhere). Do enough practice problems (textbook/past exams) and you won't be surprised by any questions. The material is not easy however and the asynch lectures and quizzes are time-consuming.
Her marking scheme saved my grade! The midterms are harder than the actual exam, BE SURE TO focus on the practice she provides from previous years as a study guide, they are very similar to the actual midterms and exams. She records all her lectures but she moves very fast so brush up on grade 12 chem concepts and you should be fine!
Similar to high school in her lectures. She is nice, organized, passionate and knowledgeable. Her grading scheme is everything!!! Midterms are hard but final evens out. Always happy to help and goes beyond what is required (exam review, extra help recommendations, fun workshops). She picks great TAs! Tough course but she's the best one to teach it.
Prof Goto was the best prof I had first term. Her lectures are well structured and she does a good mix of theory and examples during them. The assignments on stemble can be a bit hard but you can try each question as many times as possible so it's easy to get 100% in the hw section. She's the best prof for first year chem.
Overall, Goto was a good prof. She sometimes explained things in a confusing way but was always happy to answer questions. She really wants you to suceed and her marking scheme is so kind and she gives hints. Exams are similar to past exams so practice those lots. She also posts lectures online so you can go back and rewatch if you are confused.
1 word. yawn. i could not listen to this woman for longer than 30 minutes at a time.
Overall, pretty alright. Midterm grading were harsh (class avg: 52% i think) but the exam was easy (Made the midterms worth practically 0). Do the Stemble homework, skip lecture if its better for you.
does her best to make sure students understand the material!
Prof. Goto's classes can be a bit dry, but she really knows her stuff. Stemble homework is key, and her past exams make great practice. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for quick chem concept reviews. If you put in the work, you'll do well.
Dr. Goto is extremely knowledgeable in her area of expertise, and is absolutely the best first-year chem prof at the University, from what I've heard. She is always enthusiastic about the course content, and was not a difficult grader considering the course content. Get ready to do homework, but enjoy!
This is a difficult class but goto tries her best to make it as manageable as possible. Her midterms are difficult but she makes it so that if you do better on the final then the midterms are worth 0%. Her final was pretty similar to the midterms, but i think it was more manageable because students got used to her testing. I recommend, but study!!!
Very nice prof, but expect to be bored. This is a very lecture heavy class where attendance is mandatory and marked daily. You will need good time management to complete all the homework and lab reports on time.
Don't worry. Lectures posted online, attendance NOT mandatory (5% for answering MCQs posted during class, but can be completed any time within 24 hours). Stemble homework is an easy 100 for 10%. Midterms were tough - low averages. Final was JUST LIKE past ones and she saves the easiest 3 units for the end of the year! Cancelled out midterm grades.
Provides plenty of resources for succeeding. Lab portion of the course definitely takes up more time and effort, making it easy to fall behind. Plan ahead and start the homework when the chapter is completed.
Dr. Goto was really good at explaining the concepts she taught, she wouldn't often skim by concepts or do shortcuts in the math- this was tedious if you knew what you were doing already, but incredibly helpful if you were a bit lost. Overall. She is a solid professor and seemed very personable and friendly. Every lecture + DGD was recorded.
She is a good prof as you can tell she is very passionate about what she teaches. However, if you know how to self study, it is 100% better to learn on your own, even though attendance is mandatory. My grade was evidently terrible in this class but I would have never passed without her saving grading scheme. She isn't bad, passionate but confusing.
Very engaging lectures (we got fun demonstrations). A lot of homework, but it's all optional, think of them as practices to help you understand. No curveballs for midterms or finals. Prof Goto also posts midterms and finals from previous years to help you understand what you should expect. Just basically a really caring professor.
decent prof
Fair. Clear. Organized. Engaging. Provides many resources. Easy grader BUT hard questions. Does require you to (mostly) know what you are doing. She knows her stuff - she can reword many ways till you understand. If you want to do well and make the effort, she wants you to do well. NOT an easy class. But she is fair.
I love Dr. Goto, such an amazing professor. Her lectures were engaging and not too hard to follow. Honestly, there's not any con of hers.
Notice how all students who took 1st year courses with her give high ranks, higher levels say awful. Keeps saying "since this is a 2nd year course everyone should have taken a dozen chem courses by now", and the test includes stuff she assumes we learned. If you check the curriculum, this is only the 3rd-4th chem course people take. Really bad.
She does not make any sense, I think this is her first time teaching this class and so thats why its all over the place. But seriously, what are these midterms, they are so difficult and she does not post practice exams. She said the questions would like like problem sets but they most definitely are not.
I really don't understand why she has so many five star ratings. She doesn't make any sense, this is her first time teaching the course, everything feels unorganized. The midterms were extremely difficult, and she doesn't give practice exams. She said it would be similar to the problem sets, but they definitely weren't. I hope the exam is easier.
Amazing prof! She really cares about her students and always tries to make sure we understand the content before moving on. The problem sets closely reflect the midterms and her review sessions before each exam are so helpful! It's a hard course but if you stay on top of lectures and do the problem sets you should be fine for the exams.
Well, goodbye to my 9.7/10 cGPA. I'm a fourth year with straight As. Hopefully I can get a D in this class, but an F seems more likely. She has actively decreased my understanding of concepts I had down cold in other classes. After listening to her, I no longer believe I could pass gen chem or orgo, both of which I had A in before meeting Dr. Goto.
No practice exams or midterms (first year teaching the course but still). Very little explanation for a lot of calculation questions which her tests are heavy on. Allowed a one sided cheat sheet for final when the other section got a double sided cheat sheet/ non cumulative final. Also provides no formula sheets for any midterms or finals.
She overcomplicates things a lot; Expects us to learn/remember way more than other profs for this same class. Lectures hard to follow sometimes. Very nice person however, feel like this is just adjustment from this being the first time she's teaching this class
Really expects you to know a ton about biochemistry from the get go. Doesn't explain things in a very cohesive manner. Midterms were fair, final exam (which could have weighed 70% for people who didn't do the midterm) was definitely not as similar in terms of difficulty to the midterms as she promised. That being said, she does seem very kind.
She is a good prof, just teaches fast. The lectures themselves were quickly went through but the slides had all you needed to know for the midterms. The exam was harder than the midterms, but we got a cheat sheet so that was helpful. GO TO THE DGDs!! The TAs are so helpful and they go through things you'll see on the midterms.
This prof seemed really nice but i found her teaching style to not work for me, she went through topics quickly in class and didn't really explain processes where calculations were needed, and it didn't help that the topic itself is hard with lots of memorization and gen chem stuff. But as long as you do all the problem sets you should be okay!
She goes too fast during lectures and, she basically assumes we know how to do these crazy calculations in our head so she skips a couple steps which is very confusing. The practice and homework she gives will give you a false sense of hope, her midterms will put you in hope debt. If there are other profs w/ better ratings take them instead. AVOID.
This professor goes too fast and assumes students already understand the calculations. Her explanations are often unclear, making concepts harder to understand. She isn't the best at delivering information, though I did appreciate the flexible grading: homework boosts your grade, and she drops your midterm grades if you score higher on the final.
assumes everyone knows everything, skips steps and is a horrible explainer. can't even comprehend what she's talking about to the point where her lectures are useless cause you have to spam YouTube videos when you're home. doesn't prepare you well for the tests, somehow stemble gives u hope and yet cooks u.. pick any other prof save yourself
has extra credit opportunities through attendance (wooclap) and homework (10%) of grade which can help u out. false hope is given and it's frustrating that every other gen chem prof gives cheat sheets to students for midterms/finals.. tell me y my friend had 4 pages of cheat sheet paper.. she eats u alive so avoid her!
If you don't grasp concepts immediately, avoid her. She moves quickly, assumes you understand everything, and skips steps in calculations. She does not allow any cheat sheet, which adds stress since you must memorize many formulas and concepts. Her teaching is confusing, it's best to take another professor if possible.
should have been allowed cheat sheets like with every other prof...
Every other class had an easy exam with a cheat sheet, final had things we barely briefly touched on. If you didn't grasp grade 12 chem, take a different professor because she wont be re-explaining anything. Its either you know it or you don't.
Lowkey a pretty good prof, she gives previous exams to study with and a few questions are similar but sometimes there are very random questions. Gives homework and participation marks that are an easy 15%
She provided all the material to succeed, recorded lectures, annotated slides, coherent explanations, engaging demonstrations, and numerous previous exams and midterms to study from. She gives an easy 15% participation and homework marks, and gives off the impression of a caring professor. While her class wasn't easy, she made it more bearable.
She was a great proff, midterms were pretty fair if you stayed up to date with the homework and lectures, and there was also particiaption marks, but if you do badly on a midterm, it can transfer to your final. All her notes are very organized and accessible, highly recommend this proff espesially if you were strong in grade 12 chem.
This professor is not a bad person but a bad teacher. She gives very little explanation to why and what she's doing, also skips calculations expecting you to know them. The midterms were EXTREMELY hard, averaging 50, and 55. The final exam was similar to past exams, averaging 59%. The saving grace was the 10% homework and 5% participation marks.
Content was okay, felt like the lectures were kinda rushed sometimes. Prof is nice, helpful in office hours.Textbook was recommended but I didn't buy or use it, found online copies. She posts previous midterms and exams but sometimes they will have content that she decided not to cover during your term so watch out for that
