This prof is very nice. Her lectures are interesting. I really like her class.
Natalie is very nice and a great prof. She is very enthusiastic about film adaptation and very responsive to students' thoughts and opinions. Unfortunately, the T.A. for the course is HORRID, which really brings it down.
Very "nice", but not at a superior level (yet) for instruction/lecture. Approachable and helpful, but lecturing could use improvement. She's a new prof though, im sure she will improve.
Loved the course and the course material. Very nice, and engaging lecturer. Her enthusiasm about the course make us want to learn.
Great class, great prof and she's totally adorable!
Natalie is great as a prof. She is interrested in what her students say, engaging and "cute". As long as you don't get Candida Rifkind as your T.A, you'll do great in her class! Very interresting texts and films as well as the readings.
She is very nice and approachable and the course was fun overall, but she's got A LOT to learn about lecturing! Lectures were far too boring for talking about movies. Avoid Candida Rifkind (TA) at all costs!!!!
I actually only had her as a tutorial leader. Since Prof. Blazina SUCKS majorly, she was the one who made the course endurable, and actually even fun. She is absolutely awesome, really into trying to help the students and works very hard to teach the material objectively and in a way we understand. I RECOMMEND her to anyone!
Can't say much about her lecturing, but Natalie was the only redeeming quality in an otherwise boring course taught by Prof. Blazina. I looked forward to her classes, which is saying quite a bit, because I often skip. Very engaging and helpful, and yes, quite cute. :)
Terrible marking- seems to have an upper limit on what marks she is willing to give you. Will give you a reason in one assignment for taking marks off, then if you fix it in the next she will still give you the same grade and say it's for another reason! I have to say that her marking is very unfair.
I would have to agree with the last comment. she is very unfair
She was a really interesting TA. Always tried to make sure that we understood the material. Very VERY sweet girl and I found her an easy marker - she just wants to see you seek help!
Very nice and friendly. She has to spend a lot of time just clarifying a concept that the prof dropped the ball on. Not very clear about expectations for essays. I would recommend her to anyone interested in taking one of her courses.
She comes off like the film she tries to teach...Clueless. She is better off in a club trying to act 10 years younger than she is.She is clueless about the material she uses..it is as if she googles her info 15 mins prior to lecture.
Natalie is a good prof. Perhaps a little stiff when lecturing but also very clear. She introduces interesting background about the reading materials and gives insightful analysis. She is also very helpful towards students.
Most amazing prof I have ever had in my four years at York. She actually looks at you when she is lecturing and is always so helpful, even if you have a general question. I love her lectures and the material on the Shelleys is very interesting! I love the course and I would even come back for another year to take one of her courses again!!
She is a great Prof, very clear. Just prey you dont ever have Chris Kurata as your T.A. She has completely ruined the course for me and several other students in the class. Natalie is soo helpful and kind. Chris is rude and useless.
A consistent person at every lecture and tutorial; never moody, always friendly, unassuming, and professional. Will give you all the help you need. Very flexible with topics and ideas and does not impose her way. Really, an easy person to get along with. Her marking is not tough but its not easy to get top marks either. What else do you want?
Dr. Neill is by far the best professor I've had in my four year English degree. She treats everyone's comments with respect, even when I find myself rolling my eyes. She is passionate about her work and it shows with her material choice and insights. I would recommend her to anyone.
I had to take the mandatory 4.1 Eng with a history component for my English degree, and was really not looking forward to it... Thank god I got Natalie! She is awesome, EXTREMELY helpful, gets everyone excited about the readings and explains things so well if you write down what she says it's essay material. Go to class and do the readings !!
I took this class because I need a 4000-level course to graduate. Her lectures are decent as she shows genuine interest in her material, kind of sweet about it. Her marking is horrible though. As someone mentioned, she points out a flaw and if you correct it she finds another flaw to dock marks from you. Try extra hard when doing essays.
Dr. Neill was just lovely. She has a nice manner and creates a nice classroom environment. Her grading is fair and encouraging, and she obviously enjoys her students and wants to see them do well. The class had a nice emphasis on the students through discussions and presentations (and we had many topic choices for the latter.)
I enjoyed Satire with her and Jennifer Judge as the lecturers! She tries to engage the class with some questions on the texts (albeit many of the students don't raise their hand, lol). She is soft-spoken and that is why she is really easy to talk to. Her lectures are read off a paper and overall, a very nice professor. P.S Readings were also great!
From what i remember she is helpful but her marking is too strict.
Natalie is absolutely adorable. She is so passionate about the books on the syllabus and encourages participation of students in the lecture hall. She uses PowerPoint presentations which means attendance isn't completely necessary, but you will want to go! Essays were pretty straightforward and with only two it is just one more reason to take this.
This course was my first English related class by Professor Neill, she is a great professor. She explains things very clear and happily help students if you ask her in-class or see her personally in her office. This course doesn't have any tests, only two writing assignments. You'll have to read books though but those books isn't heavily novel.
Natalie is one of only two amazing profs I've had at York throughout all my 10 English courses. She is delightful as a lecturer - knows the material in and out so she barely looks at her notes. She also has superb social skills (rare thing to find among profs). She encourages participation and does not shun anyone's opinion. Impossible to get an A+
I LOVE PROFESSOR NEILL! Incredible how she manages to make 8:30am English classes super fun and engaging. Professor Neill is so so so nice, really clear about her expectations, and she often brings in food for us when it correlates to the text we're studying. Would take another class with her in a heartbeat. 3
great prof, tough marker
great prof, amazing, she is helpful and nice BUT veryyyyyyyy hard marker. If you arent good with English dont take her. You will be lucky to get A. Its just not possible. you have to settle for B-B+ MAX
She is an real expert. An amazing teacher + tough marker.
Great professor. Tutorial attendance is taken but not lecture attendance. Heavy reading- but great if you like to read.
Professor Neill is the sweetest! I loved her class! The way she designed it, the readings she chose... everything was amazing about her class and I really enjoyed this Satire class. If you take her you will not regret!
Professor Neill made an online class feel really engaging and accessible. Her lecture recordings were a pleasure to listen to each week. She knows her stuff and is really passionate about it. The books we read were all really good choices. She's a fair, but a bit tough, marker, but gives good notes on essays. Enjoyed her class!
Such an amazing person! Her lectures are super interesting and she cares about every student. One of my favourite profs ever!
Natalie Neill is very Beautiful and a very sweet professor. Explains really well. The course is heavy on reading. She is a tough marker. Highly NOT recommended if you are not good at writing essays
Natalie is one of the most incredible professors I had during my undergrad degree. I took her in 4th year for 20th Century American Humour. She is such a brilliant, knowledgeable and passionate prof. She brought energy and excitement to every Monday 8:30 am lecture! If you have the chance, take a class with her! Natalie is SUPERB!!!
A-mazing Prof! She's so nice, and she's very helpful! I am a first year English Major and she helped me with a lot of things i didn't know.
Amanzing Prof!!! Shes insanely nice, and super constructive. Loves hearing what you have to say, and shes really funny! Took Satire as a gen ed course and im now taking any other class she teaches, she awesome!!!!
Maybe she's better in person but I found her online teaching to be lacking. Some profs are good at lecturing online. Unfortunately, not this one. She was not engaging at all and I found it hard to get excited about the material. I was really disappointed in this class and this prof.
she's super nice , funny, and understanding! i took her intertextualities 1002 course and it went by so smoothly. she goes into detail about all class texts, and is very accommodating with extensions and extra assistance.
I'm currently taking this class, and it's one of the last classes I take before I graduate WOW, did I luck out? She is probably one of the best profs I have had throughout my long run at York. Natalie is passionate about literature and that's what makes her lectures such a treat. She always makes herself available to provide feedback or advice.
An angel. Thats all.
Great prof. It felt like taking a high school class all over again with the way she taught the class. Super interactive and cares a lot about the course and students. Lots of books in the class, however, she does her best to make it easier on yourself and I would take this again.
Natalie was so wonderful, she is so enthusiastic and happy to be there! Though there was a lot of reading the texts were actually interesting and worth reading. She was very open to discussion and loved different perspectives. Seriously, I want her to be my mom!
Wow, there are not enough words to describe how amazing Natalie is! I took her Literature of the Fantastic class and from that positive experience, I knew I needed to take another one this summer. She is so understanding, kind and her discussions and lectures are enjoyable! She grades fairly, and if you work hard, you will do well.
I had Natalie Neill in my first year when I took Intro to Literary Studies and then began taking my courses based on whether or not she was teaching it. So enthusiastic, charming and extremely helpful. She goes out of her way to help her students and make sure they succeed. She makes you WANT to learn.
Natalie is really nice and tries her best to make you enjoy the class. You can tell she is passionate about the material.
Natalie has been one of the best professors I have had during my time at York. I enrolled in Horror and Terror: Variations on the Gothic as a course outside of my major and she really made it the highlight of my week. She was innovative in her teaching style, offered extra credit, and knew so much about this topic and was genuinely excited!
Great professor, passionate about what she's teaching. All vocab and slides are posted online, but you get extra info if you show up to class (recommended). She remembers your name if you participate often, which shows that she cares about her students. Would take more of her classes.
She is a really nice professor!
She is really caring and made lots of accommodations for students who needed it.
One of my favourite profs !!! I would definitely reccomend her classes.
She is literally the best! Incredibly sweet, kind, and understanding. I decided to pursue a minor in English because of her, which shows how much she inspired me to love literature. I definitely recommend this course to anyone who enjoys reading and engaging in conversations concerning literature. She made this semester a lot easier for us.
Very nice prof that clearly explains all the concepts you are required to know. Very approachable through email and one of the most understanding /caring professors you can have. If you can keep up with reading a book every week then this course will be a breeze for you.
Professor Neil is the best teacher for any first Yee student. I attended her class online in fall 2020. Her lectures were very organized. Unlike my other professors who only posted pre-recorded lectures, she interacted with the students each week through non mandatory"breakfast meetings" Grading in her class did seem tough but she said grades fall.
Absolutely incredible professor, one of yorks finest
she has this magical power that made you love literature. her class is always organized and well-structured. Her TA is very helpful too (Anderson).
Professor Neill is very accessible outside of class, yet her feedback is not very clear.
Great Professor. Her lectures are nice to listen to. She wasn't my tutorial leader, so I can't comment on how she grades, but she seems fair from what I've heard. Professor Neill definitely loves what she does, and you can see that during her lectures and notes she leaves on eClass.
Her course was organized for an online course, but she doesnt give feedback and expects first year student to figure out how to improve on their own. Take the course if you dont mind getting Cs
Professor Neill is a great professor. As a first year student I took this course not as an English major but to help balance my timetable due to a different 3 credit course I was taking. I absolutely loved everything about this professor as she made everything about the course so enjoyable. I wish she was more direct with the feedback she gave.
Prof Neill was very helpful during office hours and would provide great help if you needed it. She made the course enjoyable and the selected texts were interesting. Grading is hard however and you will need to work to get a good grade.
Professor Neill is a compassionate and very understanding. She made online learning enjoyable and was always available for help. A bit of a hard marker but I think the just motivated students to work harder! She's organized, well-spoken and doesn't leave students hanging.
Didn't interact with Professor Neill much, however the class was enjoyable and friendly enough. For first year English students, I would recommend taking her ENG1001 course, I hear she is just as enjoyable with 1002 as well. She is flexible in terms of dead-lines, and generally seems to want to see her students succeed. :)
She's AMAZING! Absolutely wonderful, goes out of the way to help her students. She really loves to teach, and encourages students to ask questions, or just talk! She's super friendly and responds very quickly on email. Every interaction with her, whether in lectures, office hours, or emails are rewarding in all sorts of ways. Take her 100%
Really amazing professor! She cares about her students and is very helpful. I really enjoyed her lectures. She's very thorough and an excellent teacher. Prof. Neill is very clear in her teaching and explains the material very well. She is a gem for sure, I wish all profs were like her!!
what a gem of a person! very kind and funny. the course itself is a breeze and she just makes the difference between apathy and engagement
this prof is nice she genuinely seems so kind but it is the course and her expectations? every2 weeks an assignment and the EXAM KILLED ME. its too much I wrote about 10 pages and was told this is less as people write 20+ pages? I didn't know an English would be that hard. maybe cause I am not English major lol prof is nice, but expect LOTS OF WORK
Didn't interact with Professor Neill much because I wasn't in her tutorial, but the course was enjoyable. Her recorded lectures were clear and easy to follow. The course readings and assignments weren't bad, and the final test was a bit long but we were given a week to complete it.
Dr. Natalie is an outstanding professor -- and for her students! I found her very organized, thorough, and lenient; therefore, I reckon that other professor's should follow her lead (it would help us York students inevitably succeed). Any students looking about taking EN-1001 with Dr. Natalie will inevitably succeed as long as you follow her tasks.
Prof Neill is wonderful! After each assignment, she provides insightful feedback which allowed me to improve my mark each time. She is helpful and caring - willing to provide students with extra support. Prof also has a cute dog!
I loved her, she was truly the best!
Amazing professor! Professor Neill evidently knows her stuff, but not only that, you can tell she is very passionate about what she teaches. She gives great feedback on assignments and I found her to be extremely helpful when working through ideas with her on assignments.
The most personable prof I've ever had. She knows her stuff, values different perspectives and really cares about her students. Quick to respond to emails and always stays after class to take questions. Also very willing to accommodate deadlines with notice. Take her class, you will love her.
Prof Neill is an amazing professor. She comes to class with organized notes that deepen understanding of the material. She selects it carefully to maximize learning and minimize spending. I had her when she was a PhD student as a tutorial leader. The lecturer sucked, but she was amazing. Many years later, I luckily took a course on Poe with her.
Prof is very engaging in lectures and is compassionate. Feedback on assignments is okay but is overall a great educator. Talks about course content thoroughly, I have never left a lecture confused or misled. Would take her courses again.
Prof. Neill is amazing! Really cares about what she teaches. Always open to talk about assignments, readings, or just English in general. Super thorough in her explanations, and always takes time to go over critical skills that will help on assignments. Just be sure to do the readings or you won't really know whats going on. Would def take again!
AMAZING!!! My favourite English prof at York. She is inspiring, you can see her passion in everything she does. It is such a nice refresher to see an English prof who actually cares for students, unlike others I have had. Overall I would take her again. Even if you aren't an English major its a wonderful course to take if you want to explore.
Amazing teacher, kind and fun. Very enthusiastic about the topic, always open to learn more and receive feed back and would think of fun out of class activities! Very interactive. TA Jasmine Gui is really kind, but a very very hard grader.
She's a really good prof. Her tutorials were fun and engaging, and the books she gave to read were fun to read; overall, she's a great prof.
One of the best profs I've had. Take any course you can with her. She's lovely.
This is the greatest Professor I've ever had. if you can make it into their classes, do it! Two years later, and I still miss the Gothic literature lectures and classes. She seriously creates a learning environment like no other.
Professor Neill's classes are ones that are easily looked forward to. I am hoping to attend her Horror and Gothic Literature class next year, as I can see the evident passion she has for the subject. 100% recommend!!
