Mr. Brown really cares about the success of his students. He is energetic and fun, but with high standards. Don't slack off in his class.

Funny and interesting. Enthusiastic about public speaking!!!!!
Nate Brown is a wonderful teacher he is very helpful and he is sincere when it comes to the student learning. He is a great motivator!!
funny and enthused about speech. Do all assignments and readings.Try to take that extra step on your speech and you will be just fine. Talk to him.
He takes this course a bit too serious. You can't make any mistakes or it will effect your grade. Overall, he is a good teacher with very high expectations. Very motivated.

Great class, do the work and you will do fine. Makes comm as intersting as it can get. Over all a good class not to hard not to easy just right so you learn but dont get burned out
Teacher is a total type "A" personality. Speech does not have to be this hard of a class. Does not grade speeches fairly. Tough teacher.
Never had to work so hard for a B.
Great teacher. Show up on time, do your assignments and participate to do well. Read the book too because there is a final.
a very motivated teacher, who works hard for the students that care. i learnt alot.
Nate is a great teacher. He is always willing to go out of his way to help a student. If you are looking for an easy "A" don't take him. He makes you work for your grade and takes his job very seriously, as he should
Nate Brown is a cool teacher. He expect for you to do the work, he is no push over, but he do want you to do your best. He is very passionate about speech as he should be. Just do the HW assignments and you will do fine and take in class note.
Excellent teacher; Very ethical, knowledgeable, clear/concise, helpful, understandable, approachable, fair grader. Mr.Brown makes class really fun and interesting.
Great professor; he will not let down his students; very helpful, clear, and funny.
argumentation was fun. brown is a cool professor. not a hard class if you are prepared. would have received an A but turned in all my assignments late. earned a B instead which was fine.
easy, fun, nothing is hard
GREAT GREAT GREAT!! loved it. Was fun and pretty easy. Just do ALL the assignments!
he was a great teacher. Very helpful
High academic standards and strict about discipline, but nothing wrong with that. Excellent teacher. Gives good, clear, thorough feedback and will give good grade if you earn it.
A MUST TAKE! He is very informative, clear, helpful(and cute);). This class is not for slackers, very demanding and lots of work, but he will guide you all the way. If you work hard and follow through, you get an A. If you snooze, you lose. A GREAT CLASS!!
Great teacher. Makes lecture fun, has a good sense of humor. Very clear with what he wants from students. Recommended !!!
Great professor and very good at what he does. He's enthusiastic about his work and about having his students learn.
Nate Brown is the best teacher I have ever had. He is fair, helpful and so funny. His sense of humor reflects his lectures and it is a pleasure to go to class. Great teacher with a great sense of humor!
He is extremely easy, but not helpful
Great professor! Sets the tone for a fun, informative, atmosphere. If you are afraid of speaking infront of people his class will end that. Very fair, funny too. Take him
i dont know whomever posted that 7/09/04 rating was probably doing none of the work assigned because i believe he was the most helpful, leniant, prof. out there. He Helps u any way he can for u to get a good grade. cares about his students achievement
A nice guy, easy class. Fair, works with you and helps you as much as possible. I felt he was helpful and generous with his grading. I recommend his class.
He's a great, very funny, helpful & one of the most encouraging proffesor I ever had. He really knows how 2 get u into the class discussion. I strongly recommend this teacher. If u want 2 have fun and learn @ the same time u definately have to take him!!!
He is very animated, he also recommended for his students to check out this site! Overall he is a great professor and down-to earth, funny, and he lets u know what he expects out of u, he's very helpful, just ask...
best teacher ever!!! very lean back on grading. very easy and his lectures and easy just read the chapters and you'll be fine homework is easy as well. had fun in this class. He's so cool!!
cool, smart guy
You'll get a B. Your speech has to be perfect for an A, and it has to suck to get a C. Some tips to improve your speech: bring food, or end it with a quote. And make sure it applies to the class. Don't do a speech on why smoking is bad, or he'll say, "Stats show college kids dont smoke anymore"
The previous evaluation is right. Prof. Brown is baised against lazy students, and he treats students that do all their work like they are great. Shocking! He is totally biased against bad students. If you are a bad student, stay away. He might give you low grades.
he leads a very organized, well structured course that is both entertaining and informative. he is, on the other hand, very arrogant and his feedback is not helpful. you will gain some researching skills, but if you're looking to improve on speaking in public, i'd take someone else.
I have never worked so hard for an A before, but I learned some invaluable skills in this class. This teacher is very organized and is there to help any student who demonstrates a desire to succeed. Come prepared to do a lot of reading and thinking. One of the most vibrant professors I've taken.
By far one of the most rewarding classes I've ever taken. It's hard: Be prepared to do a lot of research! The professor is straightforward, helpful and honest: If want to gain a lot of confidence both in public speaking and in your life, and if you're willing to work hard, take this class :)
Very nice, intelligent, fair professor. Well organized class. Learned alot and earned an A. I recommend if you would like a mild challenge.
Good teacher, explains things well. Two tests %15, four speeches %15 percent, 10% participation. You have to be stupid to get less than a B. Just fallow guidlines and you'll be straight. gives help and is lenient if you do all you homework.
brown wants perfection, dont take him if u wanna BS speech, ive seen students read essays as a speech and get an A, he also will find a way to lower ur grade if he doesnt like u, his midterm that he gives in the 4th week of school on 8 chapters is BS too and if ur not a hot chick he grades u harder
explains what he wants, and if he doesnt get it he will grade u much lower and if he doesnt like u he will find a way to lower participation, i agree with the person below on everything
Awesome teacher!!! Very funny and entertaining! Does not give a lot of HW and no tests! Worth every second in his class. Only class I looked forward to all semester! Highly recommended!!
great teacher, caught him a couple times trying to express his liberal view points which i could care less about otherwise good teacher.
Professor Brown is a truely amazing teacher. I wasn't at all excited about a public speaking class but he made it really enjoyable. You have to work for your grade and follow his instructions but he makes learning fun. In the end I enjoyed giving speeches. Take this class with Nate Brown!Have Fun!
Brown is a good teacher, although he does tend to pick favorites. Gives 4 speeches and 2 MC exams throughout the course (B careful - he does include trick questions). Make sure you practice (or have a rebuttle ready) or he will make you look like a fool in the front of the class.
well if you are looking for an easy speech teacher- dont go with this one. He makes you do your speeches in one way and then when you achieve this he grades you less. Very boring lectures, his humor is very dry and I reccommend much easier teachers. /
He is the greatest. If you care about your work, so does he. He is flexible and understanding. He helped me through my anxiety. His class was interesting and entertaining. I can understand how lazy students might not like him because he expects you to do you work.
Loved it. Totally worth all the work.
I didn't want to take speech at all, but I had to. I recommend this Professor Brown. He is one of the best teacher. He is very help & gives examples of all the homework assignments. Take his class, you will learn things and you will have a good time. As long as you try your best, you will do fine.
He's a teacher who's genuinely interested in our society and makes you get involved in it. If you don't like to do research don't take it. But if you want to learn a proper way to debate about what's going on, take it. He can make you laugh even at 8 in the morning. Go Nate Dog!
One of hte most thought provoking and influential professors I've had. I tell everyone I know that they should take his class.
I'm glad so many students enjoy him. I found him to make speech a very dry and uncreative process to where I would feel like I had to become a robot. He's a bit self conscious of his own speaking performance and that made me uncomfortable or bored. He is not unreasonable though and a nice person.
took in Fall '04 and loved it. I was so shy about public speaking b4- my heart would pound, sweaty palms,shaking,etc- but his class cured me. Prof Brown really helped me find my voice- what u learn will help thruout life/career. Its the hardest A i've earned but well worth it.
MR. BROWN IS TIGHT! HE IS HELPFUL AND CLEAR. PAY ATTENTION AND YOU WILL DO GR8T :)
Very good professor!!!! Loves his job. With a little bit of work B is a sure thing, but for an A you will have to put some effort- which should't be a problem because he will prepare you for it. Just pay attention in the class and make sure your papers are neat, participate in class and you will do just fine.

Great teacher!Funny, professional, fair, flexible, knows what he’s doing and by the end of the class you’ll too. He’ll try to find a breach in your presentation, so be prepared to defend your point of view, don’t afraid to argue with him (back up your argument),he likes a healthy dispute!Do the prerequisites, mind your appearance and you’ll get A.
The best speech teacher ever! He is so great and funny, and everyone that gets the chance should definitely take him. He is a fair grader, just show up and do what you are supposed to you will do great in his class.
I dont believe he grades fair, he can be funny but bias at the same time. he is not hard but does make you read and analize allot.
do the homework, attend class, and you will do good. he is fair and helpful. he helped me get through the class when I was having a hard time. i learned one important lesson. if you do****ty work, he will give you****ty grades. he doesn't like students that don't try to do good work.
Intelligient. He knows his subject. Only thing he doesn't like late student. However, he is very helpful just work with him. I enjoyed his class and learned a lot. I definetly suggest who needs good grade. Good teacher and fun class. Be on time....
He really cares for his students. He knows making speeches is hard for most people. He will help you do well. He works well wit disable students. Do work, take is serious, you will do great in his class.
The most inspiring professor I've ever had.
If you want a great prof.,choose mr. brown. He is a great teacher. He makes this class, which can be scary, really fun. Anyone who wants to overcome their fear of speaking, should take this class. I have learned so much from nate. If you come to class and try, you will do well. It is rare that one finds that a teacher can be just as much a friend as a instructor. IF YOU ARE INTELLIGENT, YOU WILL TAKE THIS COURSE. THOSE WHO SPOKE NEGATIVELY OF MR. BROWN ARE MOST LIKELY FAILING ALL THEIR OTHER CLASSES TOO.
he is a really good teacher but sometimes you get the feeling that he likes to put you on the spot in front of the whole class..he is funny though..i also feel that he prefers certain students then others...overall i would recommend him
Knows his material better then any teacher i have had. Felt like he knew every aspect of every subject he taught the class. Good sense of humor. Pushes peoples buttons and plays the devils advocate a lot for the sake of controversy in the class. Makes the class more interesting. Not overly easy but definitely not difficult.
He was such a fun teacher. He is funny and entertaining. Do the homework or you will get a zero for participation which could hurt you in the end. Be prepared to argue your points in class. He likes that. He is overall a great teacher, maybe the best one I have had at SMC in the past 2.5 years. Definitely take him!!!
Great teacher! Entertainning and teaches the material well. Just be sure to thoroughly prepare for each speech and follow the study guides. If you get nervous speaking in front of a classroom, this might be tough for ya!
I like this teacher. He is okay with me. He is really funny and the majority of the time his class is not boring at all. It's definitly an easy course. He sticks to his syllabus firmly in relation to test and speech days. The good thing is that you can finish all of your reading ahead of time.Overall hes okay even though I didnt get an A. I got a B
Great teacher! Makes everything clear and easy. Very organized, whatever the syllabus says is what he does on that day on that time. Attendance is crucial drops points because of it. This class wasn't as bad as it's made out to be, Brown made it okay
The class consisted of 2 debates, 1 speech, and a final. Though very simple in words, his class taught a whole lot more than those assignments. At first he seemed scary but he made his class fun as the semester went on. Brown is as much as a friend as teacher. Assignments are research intensive but if you do your work you should get atleast a B
here's a hot tamale for ya, professor brown! ;) this is a fun class. we did impromptu, how-to, informative, and persuasive speeches with visual aids reqired for 2. we had a midterm and a final with complete and helpful study guides. there were no pointless quizzes tests. he's also chill about attendance (allowed 6 absences). totally reccommend him!
Very cool teacher. He tends to be set in his own opinion and expect the student to follow, but for the most part, his class is very help, useful and fun. I learned a lot from his class. He's always available when students need help. I highly recommend him.
What a character he is a goofy looking kind of guy he tried to make me join the scouts? what im an adult, he loves nature talks about it all the time. Anyway dont think it is an easy class where u will just sit there and listen u got to work for the grade but overall he is a nice guy although i was expecting a bit more cooperation from him
He won't let you email him unless it's "urgent," whatever that means. He tells you your "A" is slipping away. Not easy to approach.
This teacher is a lot of fun. He makes his class very interesting and always have something to tell at the beginning of the class from an article he just read or a speech he heard. He is also very funny and intelligently goofy. His class is not that easy but he will take your hard work into consideration. I would take him again if I could.
This argumentation and debate course was hands down the best course that I have taken at SMC. Brown only asks that you are able to back what you say, argue and debate; and that you watch your language and do not demean anyone in the class. I did none of the homework, aced the persuasive speech and won my debate and got an "A."
If you plan on going to a University after SMC then take this class, the work load and info he has you memorize will prepare you for Univ life. If you just want an easy class w/an easy A don't take his class. You will have to work your butt off but it was worth it for me in the end.

Nate is an amazing teacher- very professional but funny and interesting. He explains well, is a fair grader, very approachable. He is also very attractive and dresses like GQ. I give him the highest rating.
NOT HOT. who said that? anyways, he's a pretty good teacher, very into communication. i got an A on all my speeches, but his tests are SUPER tricky. i studied for a week and still got a B on the final. so do the extra credit and you will get an A.
He cares. That's all that matters. If you want to know how to speak and get past stage fright, he will help you. He cares and he loves his classes. He is very excited about his subject and he has crazy pictures of himself in his power point presentations. Just do the work and you'll get the grade!!
Work for the grade, and you'll get the grade. Fair.
I regret taking him as my speech professor. he dorky and talks about his family WAY too often. his summer course was long enough for me. Makes you do ALOT of work, questions your reasoning and speeches. i liked his class in the beginning but hated it by week 4/5. Do the extra credit even though it may only be 1 or 2 points. I'm not bitter i got an
Funny and quirky guy, very nice and helpful. Class is fairly easy but when you work, you work hard. There are 3 speeches and 1 final but the rest of the time you cruise. Be sure to check his online material. Attendence is mandatory. I went over the alloted absences but was still ok, probably because of the 25% extra credit. Great class and teache

wow....what a great learning experience!!! I would look forward going to class. Dr. Brown is young and super smart, and I think that is why he gets alone so well with his students. take his class, and you will not regret, promise.

Online course and required lots of work. Need to respond to others' posts frequently and consistently. I don't know if it was because it was a winter session but we had to do two discussions and two journals per chapter (12 chapter altogether). I highly recommend the course and professor. Very nice, funny, and knowledgeable teacher. A+++++ for him!
Nate Brown got me back into public speaking. Not only that, but he encouraged all of us to start taking more action about local and current issues. I loved the discussions and was always excited for class. You work hard, and must dedicate yourself completely, but it's entirely worth it! He plays the devils advocate and gets you thinking!Great guy!
good guy...kind of a goofball though...gives a lot of work but its easy work, just make sure you do it...somewhat of an easy grader...LOVES DRAMA IN THE GROUPS! i recommend
His class is intereting and he is great at what he does. He is very encouraging if you have difficulties and fair in his grading. He is fun and his lectures are very clear. His written tests are hard. I do not believe that it is necessary to have such long written tests for a Speech class.
What a admirable professor. He's mainly everything you find in a good teach and much more. He is relatable, understanding, and just very COOL. I'm not going to mention what happens in his classes, I just want to leave it up to your curiosity. But, let me tell you it will be an experience you'll never ever forget. I actually learned something! :)
Nate's a great professor. From the first day, he'll tell you everything you need to know and will keep you informed. Assingments aren't too hard and he'll break them down for you. Be sure you know a little about your debate partner before selecting or you may get screwed doing all the research. Be on time, lateness brought me down from an A to a B!
He'll give you all the tools to be in his debate team, but if you actually want to learn how to argue take another class
Took his online class and there was a very heavy workload. If you keep on top of assignments and take part in the discussions you will definitely get an A. Fair grader and easy assignments, just have to stay on top of work! Nice professor, too. Willing to help you understand things.
I don't understand what everyone is saying about him being easy and fair, he is not easy or fair at all. He likes to pick you and analyze everything of very little importance. Who takes written midterms for speech? Speech is oral! Furthermore, he is hard to approach and cuts you off constantly. I'm saying this with a 3.8 gpa so i'm not exaggerating
He knows his subject well, but if you are not one of his favorites don't expect he will let you speak when you raise your hand. He is very picky and if you don't do everything flawlessly he won't be happy. Other then that, he is a good teacher
probably the best teacher i've had in my 3 years here. very very very helpful. answers emails really fast. his class isnt easy but he gives lots of extra credit opportunities so if you really want a B or A, you can get it. TAKE HIM!
This class was very helpful in that I was able to overcome some major anxieties with speaking in front of people. Professor Brown is clear, articulate, and diligent about keeping track of your points in class. Be advised, showing up late continuously to class will hurt your grade. When it comes to grading, the man is expeditious!
Very funny and inteligent guy. He is a great scholars professor. He expects quality not quantity. Very easy on the grading. He gives enough extra credit to not even take any of the tests. Loved the class but most of all it is probably one of the most important and aplicable classes to life. You need to take this class!
Prof. Brown loves what he does and it shows. He is enthusiastic about what he does. This class requires a LOT of outside work and participation but it made for more than a learning experience, it made for a life-changing experience. A weekend camping trip with another Speech 6 section epitomized what this class is all about. Kudos, Nate!
Enthusiastic and helpful. This is a GROUP communication class. What made the class dull was the students procrastinating and acting like they had nothing to do. It was like high school. Brown should have pushed for more.
Mr. Brown is awesome!! Speech 6 is the best class I have taken at SMC. You must do your work, but it is fun work! Mr. Brown is totally approachable and makes the class interesting and fun to go to. Take this class and you won't regret it.
He is a great person and a fair grader. Nate will always make time for clarification and respects differing opinions. If you find theat the class is fun and you feel comfortable ask him about ex credit and the debate team. He has been one of my favorites and probably always will be.
Very unclear about the journal assignments. I took this class online and since we can't communicate directly with him, we lose points on the homework. He lags A LOT on the grading, it took him over 1 month to grade a journal & discussion! Relatively easy A but you'll get very frustrated by the amount of work you'll have to do for this stupid class.
Very intelligent.
I took his 6 week Interpersonal Communication Class online. Professor Brown makes this class extremely clear before you even start. It is very hard and there is A LOT of work, and there is an assignment due almost everyday. If you plan your time wisely, you will do well. He is a very fast grader and is very helpful if you have a question.
I took Professor Brown's 6 week speech 5 class online. He made the assignments very clear, and you have to stay on top of the work. If you put a lot of work in your writing assignments you will most likely get an A. The people who don't get A's are the ones who get behind in assignments, or they are just plan lazy.
Professor Brown uses a lot of his personal experiences to help comprehend the lectures.
He wasnt my cup of tea,too bad only him and smith teach speech 11.Take it at another school. He isnt the type of teacher you can approach and talk to about anything, for my money,Ogata and Preston are the best speech teachers at SMC.Not that hard of a grader though, just show up,read the book and do all of the extra credit he offers and you will pass.
It seems like a lot of work when he hands you the syllabus at the beginning of the semester, but its not as bad as it seems.Key is to show up and be on time,or else you will lose a lot of points. You have 2 debates which you do with a partner, and 1 persuasive speech,so if youve taken speech 1 you will be ahead of the game.Personally he wasnt my type
Oh yeah, and make sure you show up the first two days on time, because if you miss the first day and show up late on the second, he will drop you. Also dont make any noise when people are speaking or debating because he will call you out in front of the whole class, and speak up because if you do it will help in the long run.
I've taken online classes before and his online class is the worst! Hard to navigate all his instructions and then when you ask to clarify you get rude responses. He takes points off for minor things and expects way too much for a 3 unit online course. Tests are easy but a small % of the grade. Save your self a headache and skip this teacher.
This professor takes points off for just forgetting to capitalize "I" in the discussion board. He wants perfection, completely distracts you from learning about Interpersonal Communication. It's like taking an English class. I do not recommend!
I highly recommend Professor Nate Brown. I took his Speech 5 class @ SMC and it was fantastic! He is very organized and his communication was great! Everyone in the class seemed to be completely satisfied with the class overall.
I took the online class during winter semester and absolutely loved it! For an online class, it is highly interactive and involving. The textbook was so interesting; I actually wanted to read it. This class made me a better listener and taught me how to speak with others in a more efficient manner. I highly recommend Professor Brown!
I highly recommend Prof. Brown this is my favorite online class so far! It's interactive & interesting. You will def. learn the material due to the assignments. Great online outline the power point & lecture material was very effective. I believe this class has the best results, interaction & participation ONLINE rather than a face-to-face class.
AWESOME class! Professor Brown really has the format of this class down to a science. I was surprised how interested I was & learned great skills to improve my interpersonal communication behavior. You must take this class, you will not regret it!!!
I had a great time in Professor Brown's class! I didn't want to take speech, but I had to. He actually made the class so engaging that I am taking another class from him this semester!
Professor Brown was an awesome instructor. I had absolutely no interest in speech prior to attending his class. The journals and discussions are great for everday use in life. Just be sure to do all journals and discussions and you'll do fine. He is extremely helpful and is a fair grader.
VERY organized, clear, and fair in every way including grading. You will learn a whole lot and never read a newspaper or look at a claim the same way after this class. He is amazingly intelligent and you will learn all the tools you need to engage in debate. Fair amount of work but not overwhelming. FUN class!!!
Great professor. I didnt have an interest in speech, but when I took Nate Browns class he made it interesting. He's not like those other boring teachers who just leacture and read out of a book all day. He is a reasonable and fun teacher who has a great sense of humor. My most funnest class and best teacher yet. Keep it up Mr. Brown!!!
This class was a treat for the soul. Mr. Brown is SO organized and so on top of his game that you will look forward to logging into eCompanion every day (My class was online). Getting in touch is a breeze and he is just... wonderful. I can tell he is raising those kids of his properly. I love him! :D
Took this course because it was required for UCLA COM, then I didn't get accepted:( I still would not consider it a waste of time. I learned a lot. Still have my books for sale if you need...
i took debate to fullfill a requirement and by god will never do it again!!! this was the most stressful, annoying and time consuming class ever. prof brown is not bad but he's not great. he grades fair but for the amount of time i put into this class felt i deserved a better grade. It mught have been a better experience if his classes were'nt @ 8a
Very fair teacher...just do your required work and be prepared to deliver your speech and you'll be good.
I honestly have nothing bad to say about him. I'm taking him for 2 right now, and he is wonderful. There is a lot of research for the speeches, but this is school people! Of course there is going to be research. He also has minimal use of the book, so that's another plus. I really cannot say anything bad about Professor Brown. He has a great spirit
I have him for debate, its a stressful class but mainly because its speech and debate. He is fair, not super easy, not super hard
took him Spring 2010: Comm 5. Very good teacher...just do what he says and you'll be fine. U can also ask questions or send an email to him. 3 tests (30 mins each) and participate in online discussions which are fun and you just might learn something about yourself!!
Great Teacher!! I loved this class because I got to learn so much about myself and the world around WHILE in the comfort of my own home. Tests are not hard just study the lectures and the book. There is good amount of writing and reading but that's expected in an online class. I got an A and so will you if you take his class. :)
Good teacher! Just make sure you do your homework! Take advantage of the extra credit opportunity-the rest is the breeze...
Fun class! Not a huge debater, I use my hands and body far too much to be on the team. However, if you do the research this has the potential to be a really fun class. Prof. Brown is very helpful - so be sure to ask if you have questions! There is a bit work to do in the class - however he does offer a good deal of Extra-Credit opportunities!
I HAD THIS PROFESSOR FOR SPEECH 01,HE CLEARLY TREATED THE CLASS AS IF IT WAS A CLASS ON DEBATE INSTEAD OF A BEGINNING SPEECH CLASS. THIS PROFESSOR IS OVER THE TOP WITH EXPECTATIONS FOR A BEGINNER CLASS ALSO HE CATERS TO CERTAIN STUDENTS OPENLY... THE PROFESSOR NEEDS TO FOLLOW HIS DREAM & BECOME A UNIV. PROFESSOR!!
Considering taking an online class from him?Do yourself a favor:DON'T!Completely misses the point that most JC students take online classes for CONVENIENCE due to schedules.I've taken online courses at SMC for a year and all the other intructors were great. He wants daily participation - for an online class it's not realistic & homework is boring!
Online class during summer session. OMG - boring. Pretty useless info. This class is for apes learning to communicate feelings, not comm majors, which I imagine are pretty good at this stuff hence the comm major?! The "Clearing" text will make you want to rip your face off if your partner doesn't do it first! Lots. of. work. every. single. day.
Great teacher extremely helpful to students that show they are trying. Took the hybrid class and was really dreading taking a speech class. But, it ended up not being that bad.
First of all whoever rated Prof. Brown as Average Quality is a lazy student! He is an EXCELLENT Professor who is kind, enthusiastic, organized and funny. I had him for Sph1&5 and got A's because I put in the time!! So students who don't want to put in the time..please don't go around slandering a great Professor!!!The problem is not him...it's you :p
Speech 5 online was an awesome class! Prof. Brown is amazing. His online class taught me so much about myself and how to effectively communicate. As a nursing major I was thinking this class would be boring, but it was the best class that I have taken so far!! Prof. Brown is very fair if you do your work and is always available for any questions.
Best teacher I've had at SMC. There is a good amount of work in the class, but he is very helpful
I took his summer session online for speech 5, and a hybrid class for speech 1. He is a great teacher, very organized and up-to-date with grading, and he lets YOU do the work rather than talk too much like some professors tend to. He gives a lot of great examples to further your understanding on his site, it's an easy A if you put in the work!!
Highly recommend this class!!!! Debate topics are current and interesting. He is the coach of the debate team so he knows what he is talking about. It's a challenging class but he gives lots of extra credit. I was scared going into this class but I came out with an A! I learned so much. He is definitely one of the best professors I've had so far.
Highly Recommended!!! This is one of the best classes I have ever taken. Professor Brown does everything he can to help his students succeed. The course is challenging, but you learn so much. If you have any questions or problems, he is always willing to help. You just have to ask. There is no reason anyone should do poorly in his class.
I was really dreading this class but Prof. Brown is great. This class was a hybrid so most of the learning aspects were online and Prof. Browns online lectures were extensive and very informative. This was not an easy class but I got an A and if you can follow directions and do all the assignment you can do well also.
Brown is the most clear, organized, kind, & helpful professor I have had @ SMC. I am amazed at how much I learned from him! He provides wonderfully elaborate examples & I HIGHLY recommend his speech 1&5 courses, though I'm confident any course of his is undoubtedly worth taking! He wants his students to succeed, & if you put in the effort you will!
What's been said is true: Prof Brown is extremely fair, helpful, organized & down to Earth. *HOWEVER* Don't make my mistake and take this class online if u actually need to learn basic social skills in practice, not just in theory, and actually make friends.(Had to do all projects with my mom). Wait until this or Psych 5 is available on-campus.
Awesome teacher! Best online class by far, he puts so much effort in making sure you succeed. He is super organized and as long as you put the work in, you will get an A. Take this class!!
One of the best Profs I've had. He's helpful, understanding, & empathetic. Cares about his students & wants you to do well in class. Offers fun extra credit. Had him a year ago & wish he taught more classes. SMC is lucky to have him. Dont be late to class & be respectful enough 2 show up on time. My grade was so high that I got skip the final exam.
He is such a good guy. You will enjoy your time in this clas. Do pay attnetion and do the work. It's not hard and there is a ton of extra credit.
LOVE THE CLASS!!! best professor of my first semester at SMC! his class is always interesting, great teacher, great lectures! Plenty of extra credit available and a pretty easy final! The debates are lots of fun & he helps you get better throughout the class :) HIGHLY RECOMMEND this class, you won't regret it!
Really enjoyed this class. Took it over Winter Semester, so it was compressed into 6 weeks, and it was also a hybrid class. Lectures online, speeches in class. He is incredibly accommodating, not at all pressuring. Honestly, a perfect public speaking teacher. I had never wanted to do public speaking but it was required, and he made it enjoyable. (:
This was a hybrid class and I dreaded public speaking VERY badly. It turned out to be much easier than i thought! Professor Brown just has a way of making everyone feel safe and comfortable. The speeches are not difficult to prepare or present. for the online aspect, watch videos of other public speakers and comment on their presentation.
Highly recommend. Gives extra credit opportunities, assignments are not difficult, they require research but his outlines make it very clear what he wants from you. I got good grades when I deserved them, not so great when I didn't. EC made up for bad grades. Very fair grading. Interesting lectures. Good examples of everything he taught. Great guy.
I am terrified of public speaking. Brown is an amazing teacher. Probably one of the best classes I have taken. Do the extra credit not only because it will raise your grade but it helps you to understand the nuances of public speaking. Tests are easy. Brown is more that fair grading oral speeches. this class has done so much for my confidence.
Professor Brown is fully knowledgeable of the subject he teaches. In Speech 11 he displayed great teaching skills by thoroughly explaining the main concepts of the course. He establishes a good class environment for delivering a speech and supports students by promoting confidence. If students go to class, do HW and do speeches= good grade. EC av.
Great professors! i wish i had more professors like him. I do not have a single bad thing to say about him and not enough good things. awesome guy!
GREAT PROFESSOR KNOWS WHAT HE DOING! ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PAY ATTENTION, IT ITS A ONLINE AND ON CAMPUS CLASS, OVERALL ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS 5 PRESENTION, 5 HOMEWORK AND 10 ONLINE VIDEOS TO WRITE A REVIEW ON AND A FINAL. CLASS WAS NOT DIFFICULT! I RECOMMEND THIS CLASS!
I took his onlice comp 35 class, I got an A. Everything is clear in the sylabus and straight to the point. All your quetions and answers are in the sylabus. I thought the class was fairly easy, read the book, and thetures if you want and easy A. Do all the assignments and get full credit and your fine.
Professor Brown was such a great teacher! He is a pretty easy grader and if you try to do well and you show up to class it is not hard to do well
Professor Brown really wants to give an excellent learning experience to his students. If you listen and work hard you will learn a lot from him. He does put up a good fight, but in the end you've achieved what you paid for. Knowledge.
Worst class ever. I hope he reads this very arrogant. Expects alot out of speeches as if we were professionals. Barely lectures then expects us to know every single term in book. Worst! Don't recommend! Only if you are top notch at argumentation.
Professor Brown is awesome. You can tell he gets hot-tempered sometimes, but he doesn't let it consume him. He gives you credit for effort and wants you to push yourself to be a better speaker. Take advice when he gives it to you and you will excel. Speeches don't prepare themselves, put in some work and an A is very likely!
So far my favorite professor I have taken. Professor Brown tells you exactly what he is looking for in a speech and never hides what he wants. Extremely helpful if you have a question or just need some guidance. He also offers quite a bit of extra credit. If you put the work into this class, it's an easy A. If you slack off too much, that's on you.
I love him
He is a great teacher! He is very helpful in the online class and tells you what he expects and is a fair grader. Gives great feedback and is over all chill. If you do the work and study its a simple class to understand and get a good grade from.
Hybrid class worked out awesome for me. Download lectures online and show up to class to give a speech. He gives you requirements for every assignment due for the entire semester on day 1 so you have plenty of time to prepare. He gives helpful criticism and really wants you to become a better public speaker. Super nice and helpful.
An amazing Professor. This class was very helpful when needing to apply it towards the real world. The Professor and the material is very interesting. The class is also well organized. I would suggest taking this class
If you do not like to share personal information about yourself, then don't take this class. Disclosing information is the most difficult part of this class. Do the reading, make smart contributions, and follow directions carefully and you will get an A. Dont think that writing whatever will pass you.
He is such a great teacher!! Made my speech class very comfortable and talks to the students about how to do better. Half my class was online, and you have to do the online work!1 But he always gives you a chance to make up points. Take him, you wont regret it!
Professor Brown is a pretty cool guy. I took the hybrid class, so doing your online work was important. But practice for your speeches and follow his guidelines and it's not hard to get a good grade! I would definitely recommend him!
Easy. Skipped out on a few assignments, half-assed a few discussion posts, and got a B. Pretty slow paced, journal every week, only a few discussions. He is very strict with due dates, yet takes weeks to grade assignments, which is the worst!! I did learn, and I am better for taking the class.
Hands down one of the best professors I have had at SMC. He really cares about his students and wants to see everyone succeed. He keeps class interesting, fun and engaging. I got an A, there's not an overwhelming amount of work and he's a fair grader. Take his class you won't regret it!
Great teacher! He makes the classroom environment very comfortable. It's a very interesting class, and an easy A if you come to class and do the assignments, which aren't hard.
Great Professor! Class is interesting and you actually learn from the assignments. He is crystal clear with the outline and what is expected. Quick to grade assignments & leave feedback. This clears an IGETC requirement but what you get from the class will last a lifetime. Take Brown!!
Do NOT take his hybrid class. It is ultimately extremely confusing and you miss assignments online without even knowing that they existed. He has no mercy for people w/ phobias of public speaking, and he makes you memorize 100 - 250 word speeches and literally marks points off for every word you get wrong. Avoid taking his hybrid/online classes!
This teacher is very snarky and rude. His syllabus is 22 pages and he tests you on it. The personal communication improvement plans he has you write are boring and redundant. I wish I would have taken this course from a different teacher.
Nate is high uncertainty avoidance so he is sticks to assignment rules to a T. Make sure you read ALL of his 22+ pages of instructions over and over again before each assignment. He is also very low context meaning he is direct. Grading comments often come off as accusatory and harsh.
What a pleasure! I took his 6-week online course. It was intense due to the short semester, but I don't regret it. His instructions are clear, just read the syllabus and you shouldn't be surprised about how to appropriately do your work. The personal journals were a lot of fun and his feedback was non-judgmental. Tests are from book.
Wouldnt say this class made me a better speaker. Or helped with my writing. I learned a few terms here and there but other then that I didnt like the lessen plan. Somewhat unorganized and confusing to schedule topics for speeches. I do enjoy him as a person. Very enthusiastic. Id have a beer with him.
Nate's online class is not very tough IF you turn in your work on time and write outlines for the tests. It's important to read the book since his tests focuses on it a lot. I have learned a lot from his class from reading the book and doing journal assignments; it can be implemented in your life and help you to become a better communicator.
I took Mr Brown for argumentation! He is great! Not a tough grader and he is there for you if you need help or feel nervous about public speaking. The class is very straightforward!
Professor Brown is very nice and really wants you to pass the class so he isn't too tough with grading. I took the class online so there is definitely a lot of reading and work but the assignments we get are very easy to do. I recommend people take him!
I took an online class. The hardest thing about this class were the tests!!! Even if you read every chapter, study the lectures, do all the assignments, & even go over your own notes the exams will still be ridiculously difficult! The most annoying thing about the class was the DAILY assignment deadlines! But I overall would still take him again.
Great teacher
Took his online class and it was very clear cut. If you follow directions and do the work you should get an easy A. I've taken other online classes and the professors were nonexistent, unresponsive to emails, and did not give feedback. Prof Brown was the opposite and was very involved (as much as one can be with an online class) Def recommend.
I took his hybrid class and it was great! It's not an easy A. The online work is easy, and he helps with your outline. There is no final, and on the last day, you have to give a short speech, and memorize 100 words from another speech. Super easy! All you have to do is do the work on time and practice your speeches enough and you'll pass.
Great teacher! He teaches the class like he does at USC. All you do is speeches and a debate. He gives 4 homework assignments that are easy. The final is really tough, but he gives you a perfect study guide. If you skip class you won't pass. He teaches you a lot and will always help you. Super tough grader though, but really worth it.
Professor Brown was an incredible teacher! Very organized and on top of things. Very passionate about teaching his students, and very fair with grading etc. Also very willing to help his students. He is easy to contact, and very quick to respond to emails. HIGHLY recommend taking one of his classes!
This is just one of those classes in my major that I hate but have to take. He expects wayyy too much from you and his outlines for your speeches and group debates are the most stressful things to work on. He just blabbers on and on and on about political garbage that has no interest in the mind of an average person when he lectures. MUST AVOID
Professor Brown is amazing! He is clear and precise of what is expected of you. If you do the work and study for your exams, it is an easy A. He is helpful and prompt at giving positive or negative feedback on all assignments. His lecture components online are audio if you're an auditory learner or powerpoint if you are a visual learner.
Professor Brown was my favorite online professor ever. He responds to e-mails, updates all assignments/his syllabus, and he comments on EVERY assignment while giving you feedback. Read all of his directions and make sure to do the assignments (which he lists all of on the syllabus) and it will be one of the easiest and best class experiences ever.
I took his hybrid class. He is crystal clear on what he expects from the student and what to do to receive an A. Do all of the online work/posting videos online and practice your speech and make sure to spend time on researching credible sources to receive an A. He also is very helpful and does give extra credit opportunities.
Professor Brown is one of the best professors at SMC. I took this class as a challenge because I was terrible at public speaking. It was a safe place to confront my fears. He is really dedicated to encouraging his students to analyze and think critically for themselves. Overall great personality and is always there to help his students. Thumbs up!
I have learned so much from this class and the best part is that I am getting to apply everything on a daily basis with everyone that I encounter. It has really been an eye opening experience. Although be careful if you are not familiar with online classes as there is an expectation to be very familiar with the syllabus.
Pretty easy. Basically 2 speeches, 1 debate (be prepared to do a lot of research and it takes a lot of time), 1 fallacies exam, 1 final exam which he tells you wants on it. Super easy class just show up and follow instructions. I recommend going to his office hours to get feedback on outlines, otherwise pretty chill class! Take him if he's open!
One of my favorite professors I've ever had at SMC. He really wants you to do well and gives great feedback. I've learned more from him than I have from any other professor in my life. Very helpful and made me a better public speaker. I used to be very afraid of public speaking and by the middle of the semester I would volunteer to speak first.
Nate Brown is amazing in any of his Comm St classes. I recommend his classes 100%
Prof. Brown makes it very clear about what he expects of assignments, due dates, etc. I felt it was always easy to get an A on assignments as long as you read his instructions carefully and followed them. You have to read a lot and the tests are difficult. I appreciate him posting lectures bc a lot of online teachers do not do that. Great prof.
I wish I had the opportunity to take a class by Prof. Brown again. He is super fast in responding to emails, as well as inputting grades for assignments. He gives off an energy that makes it really easy to talk to him, and not intimidating. I really appreciate him and his great efforts as a professor.
Professor Brown is a really laid back teacher. His class was not stressful and some assignments got dropped. He's reasonable and he's pretty funny. The book is important to find the answers to his quizzes ( he gave the questions b4 class too) Do the work, show up, and turn in quality work and it will be an easy A.
I really enjoyed this class because the criteria is so specific, I learned a lot of valuable information, and the assignments were always clear and pertained to the lesson. I never felt that I was wasting my time. Professor Brown is extremely tentative and involved in this online setting and obviously cares a lot that you get something out of it.
I just finish class! It was a fast winter semester but Prof. Brown made it easy. Everything is clear from day 1: syllabus, discussion, assignment and exams. Extra credit available. Amazing feedback, be conscientious with your reading to pass the exam. Practice exam available before the real one. Prof. Brown is very responsive when you send an email
Nate Brown is a fantastic teacher. He's my professor and debate coach and I can say he's one of my favorite teachers. He's smart, funny, a good man, and great communicator. He cares about his students and his team, and goes out of his way to help. If you need to take Comms, take Nate.
I took him last semester and he is an amazing professor! I passed with an A and didn't even have to take the final. He offers extra credit for attending off campus debates/speeches. He is very clear, respectable and a fair grader. The people who didn't do well were the people who were not good communicators to begin with! Debates were tons of fun!!
Great professor! I really learned how to make good speeches in front of everybody and this made me more confident. He gives great feed back. At the beginning you will be scared for your first speech but after that you will get use to it! Great teacher!
Nate Brown is a good man and a great teacher. Take his classes.
His online communication studies class is exceptional. I missed signing in on the first day and he let me stay. I am extremely grateful because I can say for certain that this has been one of my favorite college courses to date. Some of the assignments require a partner and they allow you to explore relationships with those close to you.
Professor Brown teaches intellectual integrity. Class arms you with tools to navigate social conflict respectfully, logically and honestly. He's brilliant but also patient, straightforward and funny, which makes the class dynamic fun. The discussions were so stimulating that wed run out of time, and people would still want to voice their opinions.
Attendance is crucial and counts for 1/10 of your Grade. The assignments are clearly given, and he provides good feedback as long as you are looking for it. He is passionate about the course and respects student's opinions and input.
Best professor out there. Teaches argumentation and coaches the speech and debate team. He's caring, kind, a good teacher and a good man. I will stay in touch with Nate long after I'm done at SMC.
Took his 6 week online class which was super straightforward. There were a lot of assignments but they were enjoyable! The tests overall were easy, all the answers were from the book. He gave really good feedback and was very clear about his expectations on assignments. I would definitely recommend his class and would take him again!
Mr. Brown is a great Professor. He is very in tune with his students. His feedback is very helpful and clear so you know exactly what it is you need to pay more attention to. He will take the extra time to make sure you understand the material. I would love to take another one of his classes.
Very good professor. Srict late policy. Willing to work with you (answers emails etc)
I took professor brown's online winter comm studies 35 class and I enjoyed it. If you actually do the work, which isn't too much, and study for the tests, you should get an A. The assignments were super easy but the tests were a little difficult so be prepared to read the notes and study.
Prof. Brown's Com 35 class is really straight forward and simple. Participation matters, which means responding to discussion posts. 3 exams, assignments and discussions based on lectures and reading material. A little late when responding to emails, but provides good information and material to make you successful in his class. Take him!
He is an easy grader for speech delivery and is clear about what he wants. The cons about this professor is the service learning assignment that is MANDATORY. You have to drive to one of his speech and debate competitions and stay like 6 hours. Some of these drives were over 50 miles away from SMC. Its crazy. And if you dont do that you wont pass.
In all honesty, he really over complicates the class. The outlines for the individual speeches and the group debates were just too much in terms of trying to put it all together. The group debates are expected to be done his way which I felt he didn't explain too much about it. I retook this class with Prof Andrade and it was so much easier!
The syllabus you get is great. READ IT. It tells you everything you need to know about how he wants you to do the assignments. I took an online class, so reading the book is mandatory. Read, follow instructions, write in detail, and you will get an A.
This class is really fun and educational on how to be a good debater. Makes you step out of your comfort zone and test your limits. Very flexible only graded on participation and works well with your schedule. This is the only class that doesn't feel like a burden. Opinions and discussions are welcome and respected and it is a safe space always.
Professor Brown's Argumentation course is a MUST! I absolutely love this class! If you do the reading, the homework assignments will be a breeze! He flawlessly teaches you to recognize fallacious statements & respond accordingly. Advice: VOLUNTEER to judge debates (extra credit). I respect that he calls ppl out when they don't put in the effort.
Nate is a passionate and amazing professor. He teaches debate and argumentation in a clear and interesting way. He gives great feedback and I left this class feeling like I learned a valuable skill for the rest of my life. The textbook is necessary but it is only 40 bucks! Definitely take Nate if you want to learn new things.
Great professor. Very knowledgeable in communications and clear on expectations/grading material.
This class was a lot tougher than I expected but well worth it. There's a midterm and Final (Not MC). If you don't study for them you won't come close to passing. Also there's a debate; that's basically what the class is centered around. Lots of work! Prof. Brown is very fair and if you put in the work you will get an A. I learned a lot!
This prof is awesome. He's really a great guy that really cares for his class. He's accessible and extremely helpful and understanding. Semester is half lectures, half presentations/debates. He is clear and concise. I highly recommend his class. Opportunity for extra credit. Easy final and about 2 tests. Challenging but a very fun class experience.
I took professor Brown for online interpersonal communication. He has been the only professor that reached out and wanted to help me do better. He gave clear instructions and feedback. His class had basically one assignment a week worth 50/40 points. The material was interesting an fun. This will be one of my favorite classes and professors I've ha
Nate Brown is a very accessible Professor and is very organized and knowledgeable about public speaking. He responds to emails very quickly and is always very clear about what he expects from your assignments so read the instructions carefully! His feedback is always very helpful and he is understanding in his grading of speeches. Great class!
This was one of my favorite courses at SMC. I feel as if my debate skills have drastically improved. Professor Brown is an outstanding professor. Make sure to do thorough research for the debate delivery.
Professor Brown is truly amazing! He gives amazing feedback that helps you improve on your speeches! He is also caring about his students and wants to see them succeed! It was a pleasure taking his class! I highly recommend taking him!
Fabulous professor and person!
yes the final outlines are time consuming, but everything else is straight forward. He has a clear grading criteria and gives good feedback. He responds fast to emails which is good. He provides videos on instructions to any task. He ends the semester early. There is not much I can really ask for honestly.
Professor Brown is a really down to earth professor, not a push over at all, but just normal and cool (no ego). I learned so much from his class that I can use in my career after school. He is very responsive and I felt like he cared about us. He is also very empathetic, which I felt was really important this year with COVID. I highly recommend!!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed taking Prof. Brown's COMST35 class this semester! He was helpful, gave good feedback, and really did his best to support all of the students in his class. Work consisted of 8 reflection assignments, 5 discussion assignments, and 3 exams (each with their own practice exam). I would definitely recommend this class!
Really enjoyed this class and was definitely the best online class experience I have had! Every assignment was explained extremely thoroughly from the beginning of the course and so, for me, the learning experience flowed really well. He was also extremely helpful in any interaction I had with him via email and was always very understanding.
Professor Brown created an easy going and straight forward class. He was very clear with what he expected and how to get his work done in order to get a good grade. There was a good amount of reading but the readings were not boring. I loved that you could share your opinion and he would not make you feel bad for it being different from his own.
Nate Brown is one of the best professors I have ever had. His thought-provoking class has allowed me to learn so much about myself. This academic experience has been so personal while still remaining extremely interesting and academic. It was beyond rewarding - I have genuinely never enjoyed homework and a class so much before. Please take him.
He's an overall good professor. I saw good reviews on him, so I wanted to make sure to take his class and the good reviews are accurate. He's an understanding professor and has clear grading criteria which makes it easy for people during the summer to do well with the limited time they have with working.
Professor Brown is a great Professor. He is always helpful during office hours and he is very understanding. Also his debates are very fun.
Really great professor! His feedback was always helpful, and he really wanted to see you improve your speaking skills. His content was really interesting, and he is a really great and nice person. I took two of his classes and absolutely loved both of them. Take him and you will definitely improve your public speaking skills!
Im in Professor Browns class right now and let me tell you, TAKE THIS CLASS!!! He is AMAZING, gives great feedback and helps the most he can. He cares about his students, really enjoys his work and it shows. 10/10 recommend . Super easy
I took an 8-week session with Prof. Brown. Really good class, straight forward in grading and no busy work. He had a clear grading criteria and was easy to reach. Not to mention the class was very manageable, even though I was taking 16 units at the time. I would recommend his class!
I took Professor Brown for COMM 11 and absolutely LOVED his class! There is a quiz once a week which are open-book (free) and very easy, 3 speeches which you can present on any topic but either has to be persuasive or informative, and doable speech analysis assignments. I would've had a higher grade but, had many missing work. Yet I still passed!
It doesn't get anymore straight forward than Professor Brown. He is very clear on what he expects and will allow you to resubmit material for full credit. He also offers very high point extra credit opportunities and is always willing to work with you!
Great professor! You can tell he is experienced and knowledgeable by how laid back and straightforward he is. Only three speeches and some online quizzes. I would definitely take Professor Brown for this class if I were you!
Encountered an unprofessional teacher, disregards due dates & penalizes timely submissions. Unfounded grading excuses based on class participation. Easiest course but difficult due to teacher's vendetta against students. Lacks empathy & professionalism, dean must be informed! Report him please.
Really straight forward, responsive, good feedback. Just expects good grammar and structure. The only thing that bugged me was that we got penalized for not submitting our discussions a day before the actual due date which sucked since I was juggling 5 other classes. Took his class online so not a lot else to say, would take again.
Good teacher. His goal is to make you progress as a speaker and not to grade you poorly if you're bad at it. If you put in effort to improve (no matter how bad you are), this class is an easy A or B.
I just finished his COM ST 21 class which was an argumentative class. This was my first year at smc and he was an AMAZING professor. His lectures are interesting to listen to because he has a funny sense of humor and incorporates it well into his lectures. His grading criteria is clear. He gives very informative study guides.
This Professor is awesome! I did not know what to expect from a college argumentation class but if you need a comm class take this one. You will gain value from it and learn how to be a better speaker. He is very helpful and caring. The class is easy a few assignments which include a speech, midterm and final. Great extra credit opportunity also!
Mr. Brown was very kind and helpful. He truly wants his students to excel. He is willing to help after class or during office hours. This was a class where I retained much information from. I still remember the material until this day. Mr. Brown's lectures were informative and interesting. I appreciate him offering extra credit, which I completed.
He is a great prof who is definitely passionate and knowledgeable about what he is teaching. He made every assignment approachable and the project did not feel overwhelming. One thing to keep in mind is that if you submit assignment late, he cuts off a big percentage even if it was only a couple minutes.
Professor Brown is one of the best professors I've ever had at SMC. He truly cares, and your argumentation/rhetoric skills will improve so much after taking this class. It is a Scholar's class, so lots of research to be done, but it's all meaningful work and will better prepare you for transferring. Do the 100 point extra credit, trust me!
I took profesor Brown this spring semester. I had a great experience. He offers extra credit to judge a debate in the beginning of the semester. I highly recommend to do this as it will really help your score and you learn a lot to apply to class. Ad
Profesor Brown was a very impartial teacher and allowed his students to voice their beliefs whether they were controversial or not.
Take.This.Class. Please! you learn so much it's addicting. He supports his students no matter what. Always willing to help improve if you jst ask! One of the best I've had at smc. This class made me a better speaker overall.
Don't miss out on the opportunity to be taught by one of the most influential professors you will ever come across. His lectures are very engaging and interesting. The workload is appropriate, nothing absurd. Do any extra credit he offers, it will help majorly in the long run. Tests are straightforward, just take good notes.
Literally the easiest class I've taken. He gives study guides and his assignments are very fun.
Professor Brown is truly an amazing professor. His feedback was always very helpful and showed that he cared for his students. The assignments are very eye-opening and helped me with my daily life as I learned about interpersonal communication in his class. I definitely recommend Professor Brown, he is one of the best professors I've had.
Professor Brown is a pretty lenient grader and gives you good feedback where needed. Attendance matters on presentation days as you have a small sheet of speaker feedback to fill out that is graded and can't be made up. The coursework is also pretty light. I learned a lot and gained confidence in my speaking abilities.
Professor Brown is very knowledgable, caring and easy to contact if you have questions. He provides clear rubrics for all of his assignments, some of which are more on the time consuming side, but are really interesting and well-designed. The quizzes are easy as long as you pay attention, which shouldn't be hard as his classes are engaging.
I took his online winter course. Be sure to read his assignment instructions carefully and check your grammar before submitting. Be sure to make time to read the chapters he assigns. Exams are open note!! Fairly easy course, he always leaves feedback and was understanding when I requested an extension during la fires. Def recommend!
You can tell Prof. Brown truly cares about his students and their success. You will learn things that can be applied in your everyday life and enable you to strengthen your personal/professional relationships. He gives some of the best feedback on assignments I've ever had and you can tell it's personalized and not just a cookie cutter response.
By far the worst professor I've had at SMC—and that's saying something. I'm a 4.0 student, and this class alone tanked my GPA. I'm not above making mistakes, but the lack of clarity and support made success impossible. I strongly recommend avoiding this class/professor if you value clarity, fairness, and support.
Professor Brown's Comms 21 Scholars class is very simple and is straightforward as long as you carefully follow his instructions. He is always available to help during office hours and through email if you have any issues regarding assignments or grading. The tests are easy to get an "A" on as long as you study. I would recommend taking this class.
Honestly, one of the best professors I've had. Took his COMM21 Scholars course, and it was amazing. The midterm and final are graded by very few questions, but as long as you genuinely try and study, it's a cakewalk. He gives you everything you need. He's very accommodating, and his lectures were actually super interesting and engaging. Take him!
Prof. Brown is clear, reliable, reasonable and personable. I wouldn't say these qualities are difficult to come by in a Comms professor, but don't take them for granted either ;) Prepare well for exams and speeches and you'll do fine.
Professor Brown is very enthusiastic with his lectures, which makes the class fun and entertaining. Pay attention during class because it will make the exams much easier later. And do not read from notecards during speech!! I passed with an A, and it definitely took work, but as long as you start assignments early, the grade will happen.
This is my second time taking his class and I love his class. I've taken both online and in person classes from him, and both times I've recieved an A. I would 100% take his class again if I could.
Took his asynchronous COMST35 class, his modules were simple, very organized. Loved it. Only 3 exams - based off the textbook, and he provides you with study questions. Each week you have writing assignments, not hard at all, just make sure you use words from the textbook. He teaches you things you will use in your daily life and is super nice.
Assignments were very doable. Not a large courseload. Tests were tough but still easy class.
Professor Brown is very kind and caring professor. Just try your best and turn in your assignments on time and practice practice practice and you'll get an A. I couldn't recommend a better teacher.
Love Prof. Brown! Super funny, very caring, does want to see you succeed. Grading very clear. Follows the rubric to a T- do what he expects and you'll get an A. He gives numerous examples of what he expects. 2 speeches, 1 midterm, 1 final. Easy but challenging enough to where you learn a lot. Very fun. Actually gonna miss his class lol
I usually don't write any reviews at all for professors; Professor Brown is undoubtedly different from the rest in the best way possible. This class does require good quality work to get an A. I would recommend taking as he truly cares about fairness and wants all of his students to do well, he has went out of his way to help me several times.
Prof. Brown is great! his class requires effort in to get an A. I definitely learned many skills to become a better speaker & gained skills for my future career. He also gives students opportunities to improve their grade! He is not a harsh grader when it comes to presentations and is very understanding! I will def miss his class!
His material is super engaging and interesting, I personally loved that there was a philosophical concept to some of his material if you think deeper. Just make sure to keep up with his deadlines, the penalty is small but can definitely take a while to bring the percentage up if you keep missing the deadlines. Just do your best and you'll pass.
Professor Brown is a wonderful instructor who truly cares about his students. He makes it clear from the very beginning how to succeed in this class, his lectures are easy to understand, and grading is fair. Even if you dread public speaking, his methods for speech prep will get you ready for a good delivery.
Very easy class. Lots of busy work.
