Mr. Bento is very passionate about teaching and he really cares about his students understanding the material. He wants his student to succeed in his class. He always has good examples to make his lectures clear. He is by far one of the smartest instructors MJC has. what I love the most is that all are treated equally there is no favoritism :)
Mr. Bento is a great English professor. He makes things clear for everyone in the class. When it comes to ESL students he makes sure to make things very clear for them. He has us share our writing in class, puts us in groups at random, and is always ready to teach.
I LOVED HIS CLASS!!!! He made lectures fun with his examples and he's funny sarcastic with his students. Honestly there's no way to fail his class unless you really don't do the work which you should bc there isn't much. Super nice and friendly
Mr. Bento acts like he cares about his students. He's a tough grader. Grades like we were in English 101. He gets mad easily. He's gone through a lot of emotional things and I feel like he takes it out on his students. Wouldn't recommend taking him you'll thank me later. Such a rude teacher.
Professor Bento's class was great. He was always willing to provide extra feedback on my assignments during his office hours as well as after class. I would definitely recommend him!
He grades us like we are all English majors looking to write a novel in our near future. He doesn't realize we are all being forced to take the class. This is a University of California required class, taken for credits. Come on, english shouldn't be this hard to get an A in.
I have just one important thing to say about Professor Bento and that is the fact that he is someone that REALLY takes the time and understanding to teach you. When I say teach, he has his story that a student once asked him why MJC?Bento's answer was to take a look in the mirror-most inspirational, cool, moving professor I have yet to know.
I wouldn't recommend this class because it will be a headache and a half. He always seems to not know what he's doing and interrupts students while they are answering a questions. He can be very rude. Also assigns a 1,000 word paper every week and grades them CRAZY hard. When I was in this class it felt like I did everything wrong.
Mr. Bento is a good teacher, tough grader, and assigns a 1,000 word essays every week and on top of that you have to read a book that you will have to do a research paper on and also gives out book work for homework. You will have to buy the class book at the MJC store because he has you do My Writing Labs as well and are very time consuming.
he is a great teacher ! i would love to be in more of his classes! he is short and funny!
Very articulate and smart.
Mr. Bento is not an easy teacher to take English but that doesn't mean he's hard. You have to put in the work and he will meet you half way. His syllabus is scary but he makes most things easy to flow. A lot of writing but he gives you time to do it. Hes funny and strict and he really cares about his students.
You have to write a lot of papers. He is a very funny person. He gives good feedback. He is a tough grader but overall good teacher. A bit of a difficult class but not impossible.
Mr. Bento was my professor for World Literature. He is so genuine! I was not always able to keep up with the readings but Bento made each of his lectures full of explanations and examples. He made ancient literature relevant unlike I've ever witnessed. Be ready to back your claims up with 1. What You Know 2. How You Know It 3. SO WHAT
I took Mr. Bento for Eng 49 & 50. I can't say that I didn't learn a ton from him. His feedback was really helpful. I improved so much in my writing that when I took 101, I impressed that professor. I do have to say that towards the end of taking Eng 50, he got a little aggressive and mean in the way he spoke to his students.
Hella essays all about the same topic. HE WILL DROP YOU if you miss 4 classes!!!!!
Mr. Bento is the best English professor. He is very passionate about teaching and wants his students to succeed in his class. His main focus is in teaching how to write academic level English papers. He also, explains everything in great detail. Attendance is a must!! You do not want to miss any of his fabulous lectures. I really loved his class!
This class was interesting. I learned actually a bit for my major(Marketing) This class was not that bad but submitting papers to the writing center or him was a pain. The school does not have enough tutors for the class to be doing that on every essay. The class is heavily graded on essays. We were the first class he taught English 103.
He is an excellent English teacher and very knowledgeable. He can be intense and moody but can be swayed if you give a good answer or make him laugh. He grades hard and it also depends on his mood when he is grading if he likes your work. Meet with him to review essays and you WILL get a good grade. DON'T TALK WITHOUT BEING CALLED ON or await shame
Amazing professor! He engages with the class a lot. Utilize his office hours. He will answer any questions you may have regarding an assignment. He does not give extra credit, however extra credit is not needed to be successful in his class. If you do the readings,(expect a lot) complete all the homework, & utilize his office hours you'll succeed.
Mr. Bento is an amazing English professor. He is a strict grader but most of the stuff is easy, he gives you a lot of knowledge. His office hours are so helpful and he is always open to help a student. He always knew how to make me laugh! Missing class; youll fall behind easily. He accepts late work on occasion.. which is rare.. 4-5 essays!
I absolutely loved Mr. Bento. He is super funny! if you don't understand and need help with essays or just have questions, go to his office during his office hours. It is better to go see him instead of the tutoring center because he gives you feedback on what he expects in your essays and it guarantees you a better grade by talking to him.
I love Mr. Bento. Hes extremely helpful and gives awesome feedback. He relates the lectures to our everyday life. I plan on taking him for 101 and definitely recommend him! 11/10!!
Mr. Bento is one of the best teachers I've had at MJC not only is he funny and entertaining, he cares about his students. He does give lots of homework but you should be fine as long as you don't procrastinate. If you have trouble with an assignment or an essay, he is available to help you outside of class. Overall his class was great time.
overall he is a EXCELLENT discussion teacher. He is the man if you want to learn to critically think. EASY -to get intouch with VERY UNDERSTANDING - when it comes to personal issues . GRADES FLUCTUATE- but remember you are learning. BE OPEN DURING DISCUSSION he will frustrate you and you will want to get up and walk out BUT BE STRONG
Very energetic guy. He's not as tough as other teachers and gives A LOT of extra credit opportunities. He gives you around a week if not more to turn in assignments which is a long period. We read only 1 book and it's only 120 pages or so very short. Another plus is the quizzes are do-at-home quizzes or online. Highly recommend this class.
I took Bentos 101 class and at first i was confused on the way he grades , but its honestly for our benefit. All you need to get is a 'C' or higher on your essays & quizzes and you'll get an 'A' in the class ( confusing i know) . He takes time to help his students and remember to show up and do your journal writes.. Overall such an amazing teacher
Bento is the best teacher anyone can ask for .. Hes always willing to help , very kind .. He always has a smile on his face , offers so mucn extra credit ( so if you dont get an A in the class , its pretty much your fault ) i wish he taught 103!!
Im currently in Mr. Bentos class. He is quite the character and very exuberant, which always makes class fun. There is a lot of reading and writing but that is to be expected. The content is not very hard to understand, especially because he goes over it in depth. Hes a very caring person and he genuinely cares about his students. Hes the best!
He's one of the nicest teachers I've had. I took his online class and it was a very easy experience compared to other online classes I've taken. Few essays during the class, but they aren't too hard. He is very clear on what he wants, but if you feel the need to email him he replies very quickly! I loved his class and I wish he taught 103.
Mr. Bento made English a much more bearable class for me. He can be a stickler on some things, like showing up to class on time and not being on your phone, but ultimately he's a good professor. A few essays and you'll probably read a book, nothing unusual for Eng101 though. Very clear rubrics for essays. Going to his office hours really helps!!
Amazing professor! Good at grading. Journals and other assignments are done in class. If you have to miss class assignments can be done for half credit.
I took his online class, and it was fairly easy if you did the quizzes and discussions. We had 2 books to read. Essays were in depth but not unbearable. He gives good feed back and is always available on campus. Overall, it was good, just make sure you a follow the rubric for the essays!
This guy is an awesome professor he gets straight to the point and he would bend backwards for you depending on the situation and gives great feedback and wants to see his students succeed and pass his class and he is more than willing to help a student who is either struggling or just that go to guy to talk to if you have something on your mind.
super amazing teacher, he encourages you to visit him and ask questions and if you do your sure to pass, I had a great time in his class!
Professor Bento is probably the best professor out there. I am a high school student and I am taking this class during the Summer. He helped me register into his class. His class isn't hard. you do have to do reading and assignments, but it is nothing extreme. HE WANTS YOU TO SUCCEED! His lectures are very short and not boring!
Professor was a great and caring professor. You can tell he genuinely wants his students to succeed. He makes the assignments clear on what he wants and gives great feedback in areas you can improve. Is more than willing to meet to discuss any concerns you have and motivates you to do your best work. Do the work and you can't fail.
The professor sets up the online classroom with clear specific instructions for how the class will be run including what is expected of the student. I have a learning disability; I passed the class. He makes himself available for students and is honest and helpful. He is very approachable. He truly wants his students to pass & to learn. He's great!
I love professor Bento class. He responds fast! I had him for 2 english courses. He gives very good feedback & makes sure his students understand that he is there to help. In order to obtain an A you must turn everything in on time and do not weight for the last day to do your essays! or anything for the matter. I earned a C because of my essays.
Professor Bento is a wonderful professor. He is very caring about the students and really wants you to succeed. The workload is manageable as most times there are three assignments/discussions to complete per week. I would highly recommend this professor for English, he is one of my favorite professors I've had.
He will be there to help you no matter what. He will not judge you if your essay is due tomorrow and you ask him for help starting it today. If you communicate with him about issues, he will be there for you. Such a sweetheart loved him. He does give out quite a bit of homework (at most 5 assign) but they are easy and due on Sundays.
Professor Bento is one of the most positive and greatest teachers I have ever had. He is always available to help you out with any assignments that he assigns and even allows you to rewrite all of your exams except the final. I only wish I could have taken this class in person instead of online.
I was only able to choose 3 above, but participation does matter, if you miss a video quiz, you will not be happy. There is a lot of essays in this class and to my experience he is a tough grader on the essays. Overall, a great class to take in the summer, just a lot of writing so be prepared. Quick responder.
I took this class over summer so it was very fast paced. However, Professor Bento was a great professor and truly cares about helping his students. He goes into great detail when describing how to do each assignment as well as the essays for this class which made them easier to complete. I highly recommend!
This teacher is one of the best. If you have the opportunity, take him. The key to success is talking to him, and he makes it super easy to email or come to online office hours. I cannot emphasize this enough!
Mr. Bento is a great professor to take an online class with. He goes above and beyond to help anyone. He makes it abundantly clear that he wants to communicate with you if you ever need anything and makes himself quite available. The only thing about him is, he speaks one word a minute! Luckily, if you take his class online, you can speed up videos
I would recommend this class to everyone. Mr. Bento was such a helpful teacher throughout the whole course. This class was not too difficult either. We read one book and wrote 4 essays throughout the semester. Mr. Bento gives you every resource needed and provides you with everything to succeed! Awesome teacher and great class
Hands down the best professor! The workload is a little heavy, mostly discussion posts, videos & a handful of essays, but he gives plenty of time to complete assignments. Extra credit was also offered. He is very accommodating & has the best interest of his students at heart. There is a book but he provides an electronic copy & audio reading.
Four essays one is a research essay you can revise all of them. Two discussion posts each week, make sure you answer every question. Go to his embedded tutors! They really help and it counts as credit for one of the assignments. He explains each assignment very well and gives great feedback. Easy A if you put in the effort.
I had Professor Bento for a summer class. Be mindful that if you take a summer class like his, there are a lot of assignments. He can be tough with his grading at times, but he gives directions and feedback for all of the discussions and essays. There were three essays total.
The expectations are clear. 2 discussions and 1 video quiz- super easy he explains everything you should review each week and some additional assignments such as meet with tutors or extra credit. This class is centered around political/social topics but that is explained in the class description. Always available for feedback.
He requires us to meet with tutors and assigns many discussion posts. Several papers are assigned during this course and he is very critical of each. His comments are not helpful either as he only copy and pastes his rubric. I wish he taught us what to do better on our papers in class if he was going to grade so harshly.
Professor Bento is awesome. Very caring & replies to emails promptly. 3 papers count for 80% of the total grade, & 3 weekly assignments. It is not an easy class, so you have to put in the work if you want an A. He is very accessible and will also grade your paper on the spot and give excellent feedback. Can revise papers 1 & 2 for a better grade.
I took him for a Fall semester I believe, he is actually a great teacher. There are 3 1300 word essays and the 4th essay is 2000. He makes you watch his videos for credit, and you can't skip but its helpful because it makes you listen. And he gives feedback and tutoring because he wants us to do great, not an easy class tho if you suck at writing.
He was overall a good teacher although I took him for a summer class and it was a heavy workload, he has you sign up and meet up with tutoring which in the end helps you but he is a tough grader , his essays were heavy as well. I would not recommend him if you just want to pass , you actually have to pay attention and put in the work .
Mr. Bento is a really good teacher but this class is lots of reading, but he wants you to pass and get a good grade. He makes it mandatory to get your essays viewed by tutors, and they stay in class to help with group discussions. Talking with other people is big in this class, after readings you discuss them with your classmates.
This course consisted of a weekly reading quiz, a short lecture, and a discussion post. The assignments were not time consuming and were extremely straight forward. There were three 2,000 word essays assigned, which did require a lot of work. However, he would give feedback to the essays through a video and allowed you to revise for a better grade.
Bento is super chill and as long as you try your best on your papers you'll do well in the class. He is always open to providing feedback and assistance to improve your papers and grade.
I took the 7-week condensed course by accident, so I wasn't necessarily prepared for the workload. There is a LOT of work and three essays. I would recommend taking the 10-week course instead, as 7 weeks was just not enough time. Mr. Bento gives limited feedback on essays. Assignments were basically a guaranteed 100%, so that was nice.
I took Mr. Bento's Engl 101 class, we had to write 4 essays 20-30% of your grade each. Read 1984 by George Orwell. Every assignment was made EXTREMELY political.
For this class we had to read 1984 by George Orwell, along with several very politically charged articles about it. The majority of the workload was 5-6 assignments per week, but 80% of the total grade for the class was in four 1200 word essays. This shouldn't be a problem, but two of said essays were assigned for the last two weeks of the class.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! Mr. Bento is such a great teacher who shows so much kindness and generosity towards his students. His lectures are so good and are entertaining. Average amount of work load, and it might seem like a lot but it is all so doable. He allows 1 revision on each essay and if you attend his office hours he gives a TON of feedback!
Bento is very passionate at what he does, has heavy coursework, and class was very time consuming. We took 3 online 0 credit researching classes through MJC as well as mandatory tutoring sessions. It actually helped my writing, but was a lot to handle. Will chose a different professor for higher English courses. The effort was not worth the class.
Lots of coursework and reading. About 3 essays which are worth 20-30% This class was stressful but it did prepare me for future professors. Bento is a very strong opinionated man and he will voice his political thoughts out during his lectures. He's a chill dude and it would be cool to talk to him about such topics, however it becomes exhausting.
Yes, there is a lot of homework and yes you will write 4 essays. This class has transformed the way I write and think and it's because Professor Bento is an amazing teacher. Stay focused on your goals and you will succeed in this class and more! Good luck :)
This professor did assign 5-6 assignments a week, along with a 1,200 essay due that week. The majority of the class is based on a book which gets boring.
Professor bento is very kind and he care about his students. He'll do anything in his power to help you succeed. He was like a mentor to me.
Heavy coursework and class was time consuming. Ask questions in class or office hours he will sent us to his student mentors instead. We took 3, 0 credit researching classes and mandatory tutoring sessions. The effort was not worth it! Its very unmotivating seeing your class of 25 go to 8 at the end of semester. He will brag about his good reviews.
Fall Semester: I heard about how he was. So avoided taking his 101 and 102. But I sign up for classes late the pervious semester. This class was horrible. The amount of work was crazy. He was teaching us 101 materials. when question about it he just ignore us and compare us to other classes of his. I really felt like i was in high school again.
I took his class over the summer so the course work was heavy. There were three essays we had to write in such a short amount of time. He is a tough grader but gives good feedback so you do better on the next essay. Do not wait last minute to start the essays or you will not get a good grade.
Had him for summer. His syllabus dates were wrong so I was not able to do essay e
By far the best English teacher I've had... Very charismatic and fun in person, always ready to give out help&advice. Barely any homework for the ENG101 course. If you're ready to participate and show engagement (as you should) you'll be very happy in his class.
So much work in this class for no reason. 5 to 7 assignments a week. 3 essays on top of all the work.
We read 1984, quite a lot of homework for an english class but it was easy. EXPECT TO RELEARN HOW TO WRITE ESSAYS. I had to dedicate hours to getting every detail he wanted. Only this is why I wouldn't take him again and labeled his class difficult. He also requires online or in person tutoring for 4 essays. Don't take if you have a tight schedule.
He was not a terrible professor just ALOT of homework. About 10 hw assignments per week. Discussion posts, some projects, lots of reading but the book and material is all online. Essays were 2,500 words. Although he does late you turn some things late for full credit. Difficult essay grader. Overall, this class was a struggle for me.
Difficult class essays back to back.
This class taught me a lot Bento was a great teacher and funny guy you have 3 essays and little homework biggest recommendation I have is to go to his office hours if you don't do well on a essay he will really help you out and it will significantly help your grade you have 2 books you need to get besides that you will learn a lot and enjoy!
He is pretty clear with what he wants. Funny and if you put a little bit of effort in his class he really appreciates it.
I had him in the summer. We read 1984 and had about 10 assignments per week. There were 3 essays back-to-back to back and the topics were difficult to find any articles about. I dropped his class because he accused me of using AI on everything and gave me a 0 on every assignment I did.
I would 100% absolutely take another one of his classes if I could. Very awesome teacher, lenient, & understanding. He gives around 4-8 assignments a week depending on essays. He gave us extensions for almost every essay & gives great constructive criticism. If you're reading this, I would say go for him. Had to get 2 books, very cheap off amazon.
As long as you do the reading and put effort in you'll be on his good side. Course heavily revolves around 3 essays which he was kinda hard on grading, but it helped me get better at writing. Every class featured being in groups but honestly no one was doing the reading so it would be frustrating. The readings for the class were very interesting!
Bro please ban this teacher immediately do not listen to other reviews bro. Submitted fire essays and bro was giving me 60/100 like wth?? Assigns a ridiculous amount of homework and honestly I thought he was good at start but not anymore.
