Choose a diff instructor if you can
Great Prof. Very helpful and friendly. Makes material easy to understand.
Awesome lab instructor! Makes sure everyone understands, be prepared for pre-lab quizzes! Which are quite easy if you read the labs. I would recommend him!
Awesome!
Hell of a teacher. Very Clear during the Demos. Easy quizes to bump up your marks. Easy marker. 2 Formal Labs that are very easy to get a good mark on if you simply follow instructions. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN AS A LAB INSTRUCTOR!!!!
Very kind and helpful. Also quite cute :)
He teaches labs, labs are easy straight forward, sucks for lecture, defiantly does not deserve a chilly pepper....ew
Seems easy going at first, but gives quizzes every week that are very difficult. He is a very hard marker and it is impossible to get a good grade.
Nathan is a great prof. Really nice guy who avtually wants you to do well in his class. Weekly quizzes are a pain but, he reuses some questions on the exams. Really helpful and will give whatever help you need if you ask.
Nathan is an awesome teacher. He tests only the information on his notes, gives weekly quizzes so everyone can keep up and uses his quiz questions on his exams. Awesome guy too.
great teacher. but just wish he wouldnt be such a hard marker. and beware, quizzes are sometimes tricky
Nathan is great! just ask him questions if you are unaware he will gladly assist you! weekly quizzes, however this really keeps you on top of the course which is good and he uses questions from quiz for exam so easy marks if u pay attention! definetly my fav bio prof!!
He's really nice and helpful. Only study off his powerpoint slides because he will only test you on that.
Great teacher, a little heavy material! Super attractive! Going to miss being in his class!
:( the rest were full, was forced into his class
Nathan is awesome! Definitely the best prof I've had so far. Gives good notes. Exams can be tricky, but he will go out of his way to help you if you ask.
Hes nice, smart, and cool guy.
Nathan is a great prof! He never made me feel like I had a dumb question. He was very good at explaining hard concepts. If your looking for an easy pass don't take his class. If you are looking to learn the material and do well in future 200 or 300 level classes his intro bio classes are a must! Great powerpoint slides!
As a lab professor, Nathan is pretty good. He's helpful and friendly. The midterm was a bit difficult, but there is a lot of information to learn. He's a fair marker (not too hard or easy) and he makes sure he tells you exactly what he expects for assignments. Overall, he's alright.
Nathan is a very nice, approachable proff. If you have questions, ask in class because he explains the concepts well, doesn't judge you for not knowing and gives you a lot of opportunities to learn the material.
Nathan is a nice guy and always willing to help. However, I have never had a professor that required us to learn the entire textbook! He didn't even have time to teach us the last chapter and we had to learn it ourselves. His notes are very poor with only figures so be prepared 2 read the textbook or try and write everything he says down!Hardmarker
Hard exams!
Why have a class when you can just read the textbook? Whole course was note for note the textbook. He seemed to have little prior knowledge and experience in this area of biology. Very disappointed with the class. Should have been taught by another instructor. His marking is not consistent either. Overall, he deserves a C as a teacher.
Great instructor. He was super helpful. People saying that class was directly from the text needed to listen more in class. Exams were hard, but if you take good notes you'll do really well. One of the best courses and best instructors I've taken.
Nathan is a great instructor. Really good notes, and is actually interesting to listen to in class. Wants you to do well in class and will go out of his way to make sure you understand if you ask. Exams are based off notes if you show up to class and take notes about what he says you don't need to buy the text.
His notes are simple and easy to follow. He is funny and incredibly nice. He can answer questions quite well. As long as you pay attention you are pretty much guaranteed to do well.
Awesome! Really clear notes and interesting lectures. Tests can be hard, but he will give hints in class. Very helpful if you ask questions and actually wants people to do well in his class.
Very helpful professor, but has extremely hard tests. Be ready to know very little detail within the notes package he provides. Read the textbook (unless you are quick enough to write down every word he says in lecture).
Hardest Bio Course I've ever taken. He has unrealistically hard tests, no clue where he gets the material from for the tests, cause its definitely not from the textbook. Likes powerpoint lectures.
Clear and Concise, no reason not to get an A in his mid terms. Nathan makes it clear what he expects.
Great guy! Interesting lectures. Expects a lot on exams. Take notes in class and focus on them if you want to do well.
Cool, approachable teacher. Answers e-mails within the day usually. Strict on his tests/assignments, but makes it clear what he wants and is available for extra help. Solid teacher, I recommend him!
All in all, a good professor. I like his approach to teaching, that is giving us a partially filled out powerpoint of the lecture, then going over the powerpoint in class. He has a bit of a speech impediment, which makes him hard to understand sometimes, but other than that he's a really nice guy and a helpful professor.
Nathan is an extremely hard teacher, and if you are not interested in biology I wouldn't suggest taking it with Nathan. He loves biology, you can tell but he expects you to remember everything you've learned throughout the course and there is A LOT of material.
Nathan has high expectations for first year bio students, but nonetheless is an excellent prof. He's super friendly and you can tell he loves bio and teaching. He actually cares about what he does. He asks very specific questions on quizzes and tests, don't take him if you're looking for an easy A. If u want to pursue bio though then take his class
not about that teaching biology life. horrible
ridiculous prof. horribly high expectations on midterms and exams and gives students little direction for what to do on lab reports. I have never had such a picky hard marking prof before. If you are not a biology genius, do not take his class. Aside from his marking style, he is pretty good at explaining during lectures and an all around good guy.
I had Nathan as a lab professor for cell bio, he is a wonderful professor very fair and easy to approach. He has high expectations but, being a science student, the bar ought to be high. in my opinion. Bonus, he has a really cute butt.
Nathan is a nice guy, but he's really boring. I loved biology in high school, but he did not make Bio 111 and 112 interesting. Also, he says on the first day to get a textbook, but you don't use it in class. If you want it for additional reading, go ahead and get it, but if not, don't bother. I got an A+ in his course without using the textbook.
From a bad cell bio experience at another university to Nathan's class was a breath of fresh air. Class was thick with material, but keep on top of it and all is well. He maintained a student-first prerogative which made his class experience exceptional. Tricky and lengthy tests, but nothing unfair. Good dude.
Super hard tests
TAKE THIS PROF!!!! I've never been great with biology but Nathan made it clear and easy to understand. Midterms and quizzes are very detail based so you really have to work to get a good mark. If things are unclear, he is more than willing to help you anyway possible. Can't say enough about him! If you can, I would highly suggest him as a prof!
Fantastic prof! Had him for both lecture and lab and will definitely try and get him for any future Bio courses. Usually an upper level prof, so he expects more, especially on lab reports, but he backs up those expectations by teaching you everything you need to know and helping you tons- all you need to do is ask. Also very nice, funny and helpful
Nathan has clear lectures and explains his expectations well. He does expect a lot out of his students, and will make you work hard for a good grade. His tests and quizzes are based entirely off of his lecture slides, which makes it straightforward for studying.
Loved this class with Nathan! I would 100% take another course with him if I had the chance. If you show that you are putting in the work, he will be more inclined to help you. Lectures are clear, makes them light and easy to follow along.
Nathan has one volume level - loud. And if you're not the kind of person who enjoys listening to him blaring for 3 hours straight, you're gonna get sick of it. He really explains things, often overdoing it. But he's always friendly and has a ready smile, ready to help anytime. He marks tough, and it's always disappointing to get an assignment back
Nathan is an outstanding prof. Although the lectures do pick up very quickly in the semester, if your attend class and review lectures, you will do outstanding. Nathan's classes and intelligence give you all the knowledge needed to pass this course. He also is very approachable and is very helpful outside of class.
He is really helpful when you go to him and ask for help, and I really suggest doing that if you're in his class! However, he is a very hard marker. It's really disappointing getting back assignments from him. My advice would be to start your assignment as soon as possible and get feedback from him! However, would not recommend his class.
One thing that stands out about Nathan compared to other lab professors I have had is that he explains things clearly and checks up on you in the lab to make sure you are doing okay. He tells you if your results are accurate or not BEFORE you start your lab assignment. Super helpful and friendly. I recommend taking him for your lab!
If there is any prof that is crystal-clear in explaining, it would be Nathan. He is also VERY willing to help and approachable. However, for a first year bio lab, he really expects a lot from his students. His midterm was extremely hard and there was some questions on it that I DID NOT expect to be on it. Overall, expect to work hard for that A.
Great prof who really loves detail (really, really loves detail). Taking him for an intro course will better prepare you for the coming years if you plan to take biology. Very helpful and is consistent with his office hours. There are no assignments for the lecture. Prepare to be brutalized when he marks your bio 111 formal reports though.
Loved Nathan for my first Biology class. Really nice guy, explains concepts clearly, and available for extra help if you need it. Tests are based 90% notes and 10% off stuff he talked about in class, and makes his expectations clear beforehand. Be careful on your first test though - he's big into details!
Loves details. And for a student that likes knowing the basics and understanding the main points I did not enjoy his tests. He's really approachable and wants to help but he expects a lot out of a first year course.
Nathan is a fantastic prof. His lectures are clear and concise, he has a clear, loud voice, and his expectations are clear and very reasonable. Other students in his class complained about tests being tough, but I found his tests to be fair and if you study, fairly simple. The best prof I had last semester (out of 8).
By far the worst professor I have had at UFV. Please save yourself time and money and take genetics with a different professor. His lab tests are brutal (you are lucky if you get 50%) and are DETAIL orientated (not given info in lab, have to look it up yourself). Don't be fooled by his nice attitude. If you are an average student you will do poorly
I loved having Nathan as a prof. He does expect you to have a pretty good understanding of the course, so his tests can be hard if you're confused. That being said, if you study hard and ask him questions you will be fine! He is really good at explaining things and is always available to help you.
Is a very tough grader but has clear expectations. Exams are difficult and hard to do well on. Overall is a good prof.
Overall a good prof. A difficult marker, and has tough exams and pre lab quizzes, but is almost always accessible outside of class for help and clarification.
Nathan is a really nice teacher and he really wants his students to do well. However, he expects you to know the material inside and out, and if you can not really retain information then I would avoid him.
I've had Nathan for BIO220 lecture+lab as well as another lab. He is a hard marker and can put huge marking focus on things that aren't touched on a lot in lab. In lecture, he tends to be very fair and the tests correlate well to the material covered. Suggestion: don't try to do genetics without buying the book. He's an alright prof.
Nathan is my favorite prof at UFV. He is friendly, witty, and makes lectures interesting by relating the subject matter to cutting-edge research. He has tons of office hours and is always very happy to help and explain things. He can be a bit of a tough grader, but his test material comes straight from his notes. Study and you'll do well.
Nathan is very detail oriented. Study his notes, and study them inside and out. Other than that, he is interesting to listen to, his lectures are clear, and he is very approachable in terms of getting help. Paired with SLG, I did well in his course.
Nathan is a great prof - I would take him again in a heartbeat. His tests are fair and based off the in class notes but he does expect you to know alot. About 2/3 of the midterms and final are written so be prepared and understand large concepts and practice problems. Extremely helpful and easy to talk to; you won't regret taking courses with him
Nathan would be a great teacher at any level. Clear, concise, breaks down difficult concepts well. Lecture tests will not surprise you, but be warned: Nathan expects a very deep level of understanding if you want the A. Nathan was helpful in the lab, but he does not give you much material to study from for quizzes. Try google, then email him.
A fair note of warning: Nathan's tests will challenge even the most seasoned bio students. Don't expect an easy A with Nathan. If you doubt if something will be on his exams, chances are it will show up. Make sure to have a buddy to study with.
You have to work your butt off in his class. Power points have very limited information so you have to make sure you pay attention to what he says because odds are it'll come up on your test and he expects you to know every little detail. He is a very nice guy and cares for his students but his expectations are above and beyond for second year.
Nathan is an excellent prof. He is available to help in office hours always and he is very clear and sometimes tells you hints on what to look for on tests during office hours. He is very clear on what he excepts from you. You do have to put in work to do well in his classes but he is very fair in marking.
Nathan is a fantastic professor. I don't have a particularly good memory so I had to work very hard for a decent mark which, quite frankly, is the way it should be. He provides the material and support to ensure you do well. Want an easy A? Don't take him. Planning on using what you learn (MCAT,Med,research, real life etc) than he's the amazing!!
Nathan's class requires ALOT of memorization for the exams and quizzes. He was nice enough to put 2 questions from the quizzes onto the midterms. His class is no joke; if you want that A you have to work for it. exams are tough. Study and memorize the lecture slides and hopefully, you'll do fine.
Nathan is fantastic prof! Sure, he does not make the class easy but you leave it with a very good understanding of the material if you put in the work. His lectures are very thorough and interesting and if you supplement his printable notes with your own during class and study hard, I can assure you that you can do well in Nathans class.
Doesn't provide practice tests. Very rude to students. Hard to get help from. He looks for very specific answers on tests.
Nathan is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is very knowledgable and has tons of passion for biology and teaching. He inspired me to go beyond lecture materials. People complain he's a "tough marker" but that's not the case at all. As long as you put in the time to study consistently (it's college, duh), you should be able to do well.
Nathan is my favorite Biology prof I've had. He explains things super well and his lectures are very engaging. Even includes recent research related to the lecture topics. Nathan welcomes questions in his lectures and answers them well. Expect to work hard in his class as it's definitely not an easy A but you'll know and enjoy learning the material
Hands down the favorite class of my undergraduate degree. Nathan is a fantastic Prof. The course is seminar style where you are provided readings/papers to supplement brief lecture notes. Understanding is super important and the only way to do well in this class... Memorization won't work.
Nathan is challenging and his lectures are fast and furious. Not always great at answering questions in class. Super hard marker, but he knows his stuff!
Nathan is a really great prof! Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the material, and does his best to engage everyone. Pay attention in lectures and take extra notes, as he will test on things he said in lecture but were not written on the slides. Study hard and keep up with the material and you will do great in his courses.
Nathan really makes you work for the grade but is a very kind and caring professor, he goes out of his way to make sure you understand the content and will help in any way to explain it in a way you understand it. He is a hard marker but a fair marker and will give you partial marks if you deserve it. I would take him again!
Nathan is very knowledgeable and his powerpoints are helpful however I did not appreciate how he taught the course online. No backtracking was allowed on any test and you had to find the answers online to study for lab tests making it unclear on what needed to be known. Overall I found him unwilling to make online learning easier and less stressful
Nathan is one of my favourite profs! He is a tough marker and looks for specific answers but if you take good notes and write down everything he says you will do just fine. All of his questions are fair as they are straight from his notes. He also emphasizes concepts he wants you to know for his exams.
He is a great professor that clearly knows what he's talking about. He really cares about his students and wants them to do well. Answers questions and is super accessible outside of class. He is a reasonable marker and might be one of the only professors that acts professionally at UFV. Test questions are reasonable and not harder than lecture
Nathan is not understanding of online environment, cares too much about "in person" conditions . Even with webcams turned on, not enough time to complete tests and quizzes and one question is displayed at a time. this class is definitely made harder online
adjusted poorly to online environment and hard marker
One of the worst professors at UFV. He is very knowledgably in the material but is possible one of the hardest markers ever. His lectures are long and dry and he expects you to know things he doesn't talk about. The textbook questions are extremely hard and don't relate to the tests. DO NOT TAKE BIO220 WITH HIM!!!
Very picky about what answers he expects. Wont give you full marks unless you have what he expects word for word
I was confident that I understood the 220 concept until I took this profs midterm. His grading is tough, expects you to answer questions in a specific way. Multiple choice questions are twisted sometimes. The assigned textbook questions aren't helpful at all, they aren't similar to exam format/concept
Very strict marker and this course is a very huge course load
No curve, not caring, bad at teaching- lectures are too vague, does not prepare for exams. Extra questions from book not useful. Labs are boring. Grades way too hard/unfair, will get my grade appealed after this. Save your gpa, do this class at some other uni. not worth the headache
I don't think Nathan is a 1 star prof as seen by some of these reviews, I think he'd be better irl. I agree about the MC sections on his tests, they can feel like an english exam sometimes. For his online class he doesn't do a live session so if you want to pass go to his office hours at least once a week even if you don't have questions.
doesnt scale marks, despite class doing poorely. Few people do well, or are repeating the class. Grades way too hard, even worse with online school. Course load is way too huge
Nathan was not accommodating to the online classes at all. He made this class a lot more harder online and his assessments were very unfair and hard. Different students would get different questions since they were randomized due to being online. Some students get easier questions than others. Very hard marker. His lecture notes are not detailed.
Very specific when marking. Will have questions related to notes but answers are completely different from the notes. Can include some things correct in answer but if it is not exactly how he wants it will be marked as a complete zero despite part of it being right.
Great prof. Explains concepts very well. Really helpful if you go see him. Will take again for upper-level courses.
Nathan was a big part of my BIO degree. I took MANY classes with him. Want an easy A? I'd avoid. He expects you to do this crazy thing called 'learn'. I'm a doctor now and I'm so happy Nathan is still teaching. Want to smash the MCAT and make it EZ PZ? Nathan is your prof.
The best prof at UFV. Taken 220, 401, and 409 with him. DO NOT take his classes if you're lazy and looking for an easy A. Definitely take him if you're actually looking to learn something. Incredibly smart and well respected, he wants you to succeed (if you're willing to work). I spent time in his office going through questions before every exam.
Is so knowledgeable but he is a hard marker. Does not give part marks even if you got part of a question correct or if it isn't worded the way he wants. His quizzes are easy but you need to go to his office hrs if you want to do good on the midterm/final. Study everything in the PowerPoint & write down everything he says and study that too!
I really enjoyed this class, it was a lot of work and you need to put in a lot of time to do well. Nathan made himself available for extra office hours when needed and went out of his way to made sure you understand all the concepts. He is a tough marker and wants a lot of detail. I found the final MUCH harder than the midterms
Go to his office hours, it'll be the difference of a grade letter if you do. Very tough marker with high high expectations for his content. Don't just KNOW it, have it be a part of you because the test/final questions will take you out. Final exam had a question worth 9% of the overall test and it was a deviation of a formula we used once.
Nathan was just alright. Genetics can be a challenging subject - Nathan definitely made it palatable and interesting. Final was much much more difficult than the quizzes and midterms. He has a tendency to have trick questions in exams, rather than just testing you on knowledge.
Nathan is great when it comes to explaining the things however he has particular way of marking. Sometimes you may feel that it was right however you lost marks because it was not the way he wants. Easy quizzes Average midterm and final Tough grader Participation is important to take good notes. Definitely recommend:-)
Nathan is a tough but brilliant prof. Attend office hours and use Unstuckstudy to ace the exams - his questions can be tricky but the extra prep is worth it.
Excellent lecture and lab prof. He was one of the most caring and down to earth profs I have had at UFV. I really regret not taking him earlier in my degree! Super welcoming and open for questions and office hours, and very dedicated to his students. Not an unreasonable marker at all, highly recommend.
A tough grader but fair. He goes over exams and if you think you deserve a higher grade he's very open to discussing it.
Nathan is a very good prof and he makes all the difficult material very easy to learn. The quizzes and midterms set you up for the final and I enjoyed his class.
He is a very stellar lecturer and does whatever he can to set students up for success. But his midterms feel too short on time and are arguably a little too difficult or vague. I wouldn't take him again due to the difficulty he gives and the little practice or study material he provides for midterms in addition to the practice textbook problems.
He was unapproachable and doesnt teach you whats tested on you have to learn all calculations on your own good luck
good lectures but he gives really insane curveball questions that twist what you do in the textbook, they're typically stuff that you don't expect to answer or have practiced for at all, he gets you thinking but sometimes it feels a bit too much for an undergrad course
Nathan is one of the best professors at UFV. If you memorize his lecture slides and genuinely try, you will do great. He is a very fair marker even with challenging exams. He is so professional and respectful and a great person.
Despite genuinely doing my best in studying; memorization of the lecture notes is often not enough to succeed in exams. As frequently questions require extensive thinking that is otherwise not really too easily touched upon unless you had hard practice problems outside of the textbook he recommends to do questions off of. I would pick someone else
I wouldn't pick him, his test are too difficult especially since you'll not have prior appropriate practice that lines up to the exams. I'd suggest a better professor who would give the appropriate resources for exam preparation.
Lab only, Out of 20% total lab mark - 15% quiz, 5% assignments. Quizzes are modelled after assignments and the lab reports, but make sure to pay attention when he goes over the lab procedures as he hints towards what is on the quizzes. Didn't find him to be a strict marker for the lab, though labs were very long. Nice guy otherwise, fun to talk to
