I am not sure if i disliked him or bio 2 lab. There was a lot of work to be done and it was never clear what was actually assigned. He sends like 15 emails a week, is rather scatter-brained and never really knew the answers to any of my questions. He was always willingly to help out and do his best.
He's a terrible professor. He makes 100s of typos in the exam and doesn't know the difference between translation and transcription. Honestly, I could write a better exam than Nathan Brouwer.
honestly the most unorganized, incomprehensible professor imaginable. The exams are train wrecks and incredibly unprofessional. Avoid at all costs.
The most disorganized teacher I have ever seen. He had more typos on his exam than actual meaningful facts about Biology he taught this semester.
He's very disorganized, but I can tell that he cares about his students and provides good feedback when you go to his office hours. He did not grade most of the things he assigned for bio lab, so if you do the work in his class you'll probably get an A. Pretty easy going and funny guy too.
Professor Brouwer is one of the most disorganized confusing teachers I have had. During the test he changed multiple questions due to typos and left out information. Nothing connects with the text other than broad terms, and makes you read Doctorate level research articles without explaining how to decipher them. He's nice but the class isn't.
WORST PROF TO TEACH AT PITT EVER!!! The man does not post his slides until 2AM the day of lecture. His lectures do not follow the book at all, especially after the first test. His recitations are also a disaster. He makes you read doctorate level work and analyze it, when he can't even do that himself. His tests are finished at 3AM the day of...
Hes a little disorganized but these critiques are being a little too hard on him. He recognized his test was disorganized and gave an opportunity to get points back with better written questions that was take home and open note. He definitely could be more organized but he cares for his students and want them to understand biology ultimately
Dr. Brouwer is one of the worst professors I have had in my 3 years of college. He is extremely unorganized and stopped us multiple times while taking our exam to make corrections to it. I took this Bio 2 last semester with a different professor and Dr. Brouwer has been teaching us irrelevant things that I have never learned before. Avoid him.
Great teacher. A bit disorganized with some typos and seems to write the exams the day of but overall a great guy with a nice biology background and really cares about his students. Exams are pretty straightforward after you decipher the questions' typos and are mostly based on his presentation and book material. Lectures are fun and enjoyable.
The worst professor I've had at Pitt so far. He's so disorganized, which is detrimental to his students' ability to learn. He goes very in depth in lecture about detailed topics, which makes it hard to understand the bigger picture of what is being taught. I study for hours and still get C's on exams. If you want to save your GPA, do not take him!
Is the least organized professor Ive had at Pitt. Lecture notes make course seem not so bad but exams are disorganized and kind of ridiculous compared to what happens in class. Definitely should be teach ecology and not a foundations class. Avoid if possible. Nice guy but horribly disorganized.
Very disorganized, but overall a very good person. He made a lot of mistakes on one of our exams, but compensated very well afterwards and curved the score. Compared to other science classes at Pitt, his is much more enjoyable and not as difficult. Also, much of the recent negative feedback seems harsh in my opinion.
Ngl he's a bit unorganized, but he does truly care about his students. He makes lectures as interesting as possible and tries his best to get people to be as excited about bio 2 as he is. Yes, he makes mistakes on the test, but he owns up to it and compensates for it with a buyback. Don't be too quick to judge him just because of one bad test grade
Dr. Brouwer is an okay professor. He sends out A LOT of emails/notifications to the point where I just started ignoring some of them. His lectures aren't that good. He has A LOT of slides for one lecture (60-100 slides). He has a pretty good sense of humor though. Exams were messy, but it was his first time teaching Bio 2.
The lectures are usually at least 70 slides long and he never gets through them, which makes it difficult to understand what you need to know. In addition to all of the constant typos, he uses Facebook, course we, and email all together to get the point across. He has really ineffective methods and I had to teach myself everything. Avoid please.
Dr. Brouwer is very nice and very obviously cares about his students, but the class is so disorganized and he spends too much time on topics that are not important and not enough time on the things that could actually be confusing. However, as this is his first time teaching Bio 2, I do think that he will be better prepared in future semesters.
When taking Professor Brouwer be prepared to be confused by his expectations, his study guides don't match his content. His content doesn't follow the syllabus or the textbook. His slides posted are all out of order, he forgets to teach concepts and teaches them after a different topic. He's caring, but this class is purely disorganized.
This was his first year, so he may get better. this year he was a mess. he could not lecture and his tests had so many mistakes on it. He procrastinates on making each test so each test has a lot of typos and can have multiple answers. He is very subjective when debating points on tests. you must have his answer not the correct one.
It's very evident that Dr. Brouwer is new based off his style. He's very sloppy with his work and adds in too much information that isn't relevent with little actual content. This was his first year, but given that I pay the university a lot of money I would recommend not taking him unless you're okay doing the majority of learning by yourself.
He's the most unorganized professor that you will ever take at a university. He brings up uncomfortable topics, unrelated to material. He does not understand Biology 2. His tests always have typos that confuse the questions, and he likely won't give you the points back. There are not enough characters to describe how terrible of a professor he is.
Things I learned from Brouwer: Nothing. Things I didnt learn: Biology. He is a horrible professor who doesn't actually know biology (i.e. transcription vs. translation). His exams are written very last minute and poorly and include questions that he later deems unanswerable". This may be his first year, but I have no faith he'll improve.
You will learn more about bio by looking on Wikipedia.. thats where all his lectures come from.
he is so disorganized and his tests are riddled with mistakes. the book is needed to understand the material at a level he expects to come right from his basic lectures. recitation is mandatory and accounts for a recitation and homework grade that counteracts exams so go. pick only if you have absolutely no other choice
It was his first year teaching, so I think he will definitely improve in the next year since he can see what worked and what did not. His TA's had review sessions that were very helpful and they were very accessible outside of class/in the facebook group. Not the worst choice, but definitely not the best
This was Brouwer's first semester teaching Biology so it is understandable that he may be disorganized. The exams aren't very difficult if you study. He tends to ramble on about random things during lecture and it was hard to know what to study for exams. He also used recitation time poorly and didn't allow questions during the last two exams.
Brouwer is a decent guy, but a really really bad professor. Granted, it was his first time teaching a big lecture, it does not excuse how horrible his organization was and how bad his lectures were, not to mention he was very rude. His lectures did not prepare you for his exams, which contained heavily of mistakes an typos. Avoid him if you can.
Honestly not that bad. His tests had some typos and he was slightly disorganized in his lectures and recitations, but as long as you study the material he puts in his powerpoints and study guides before the test, you'll be fine. You don't learn that much bio 2 content-wise, but it's not that hard to do well in his class compared to other professors
This past semester was a train wreck. Not a great lecturer and his expectations are not clear whatsoever. Focuses too much on irrelevant information. Typos on every single exam. It's not a hard class but it's really frustrating to deal with him as a professor. It was his first time but idk if he'll have the opportunity to improve.
Only the first exam of the class, and his career, had typos. He generously gave back points for it and I went from a 78 to a 91. He only puts things from lecture on his tests. He always responds to emails. Go to office hours. You may also need to look at the textbook to understand some of the concepts better. Overall a great choice for Bio 2.
if you take brouwer be prepared for: meaningless lectures &recitations, not knowing your grade in the class until after finals, incorrect grade updates, poorly worded & confusing exam questions, a level of disorganization that you didnt believe could be possible, 1000s of emails, & posting on FB instead of courseweb.
Save your money with tuition and just buy the book because it's better than taking his class. I got 2 responses from him all semester after sending multiple emails. I left that class not learning anything about biology. If you want to learn from a book and leave every lecture annoyed, then he is the professor for you.
Taking Brouwer was truly fascinating because he continuously amazed on just how bad and disorganized a professor could be. Bio 2 content isn't super difficult but this probably ended up being my most stressful class just because of how disorganized and clueless he was.
Most scatterbrained professor I've had. Unclear grading criteria. Tests very vague. Lectures are useless, filled with material unrelated to class content. Despite his somewhat friendly awkward vibe, his grading is not easy and requires disproportionate effort. Would never take this man for any class again.
Dr. Brouwer is a ok professor, thats being said, it is his first semester of teaching. BUT, he is so disorganized which made this class even harder. You dont know what to study and theres no review for the final, only some topic given out by UTAs. I guess he will get better in the future but idk. Avoid him if you are not confident in bio.
He is not as bad as everyone says he is, but I still would not take him again. His grading scale weights the three exams and final adding up to 65%, the other 35% you pretty much get automatically by doing tophat and going to recitation. While his grading is easier than others profs, it is not worth it in the long run because you learn very little.
He really had no idea what he was doing. His slides were 80+ and he would never get through them so always repeating stuff. Didn't get through all material on his syllabus. Tests were a mess with typos and vague questions that he refused to change. Constant emails with long grade calculations that were wrong. Ruined my GPA.
Notes and lectures were a mess; never learned anything from him. I attended class just to be with friends + studied by reading the textbook. Really says the most unnecessary/unexpected comments and always misspells and has typos on everything. I can see that he tries though and it was his first time teaching. Maybe he'll learn and improve
It was his first time teaching the course and it was a disaster. I got A's on all of the tests except for the final which tanked my grade. I was less than one point away from an A- and he wouldn't change my grade. Normally I wouldn't ask for a grade change, but the entire course was a mess and every test was riddled with mistakes. DONT TAKE HIM
So nice and so so smart but hard to learn in this class. I never know what is important in class or what I should remember. I get 20 emails a day from him with assignments or just general thoughts for the class. Takes me a really long time to just figure out what I need to do for the class.
The class was extremely disorganized and students would receive 20 emails a day. The content was also much higher-level than expected and did not provide a solid foundation of computational biology. Professor Brouwer did not seem competent and was hard to follow during lectures. Exams were also extremely poorly written, ambiguous, and confusing.
Brouwer is a mess. If you like your professors to be organized, steer clear. Everything is jumbled into a messy google drive. Tests are ambiguous and are nothing like lecture. Recitations are on top hat and answer keys have lots of mistakes. Constantly corrected by students on material, because he says incorrect things in lecture. Very nice guy tho
Dr. Brouwer is disorganized and very careless in a lot of the material he teaches and assigns. Every single lecture and homework has had a mistake. His students always have to correct him. I've spent significantly more energy worrying about his mistakes than actually learning anything.
Brouwer is nice and cares about his students, but can be disorganized. I'm a 4.0 student and I expect a high B after putting in the effort. Uses facebook, tophat, google drive+spreadsheets, courseweb: too many things. Hopefully he consolidates. Ask as many questions on the FB page as you can: it will help. Course seems like a work in progress.
Brouwer is nice, but is so disorganized. His class is difficult because his class/study info is spread out between Courseweb, FB, Google Drive, emails, and random lectures -- it's like a scavenger hunt. The tests are doable, but questions are vague and subjective. Your only grades are tests, recitation wkshts and some TopHat.
Dr. Brouwer is a very nice person but he is disorganized. Very passionate but that only goes so far. Uses Facebook as a way for the class to communicate with each other. Tests are the usual difficulty, but may seem more difficult if you don't know how to keep yourself organized. Lots of homework in recitation. All in all, not the worst I've had.
Like other reviews said, he is very disorganized. Questions on the exams can also be interpreted in different ways, where only one way is a correct answer. However, it is the student's job to not only learn the material, but also the professor. Learn how he thinks & how to organize the material in your own way. He cares and is always accessible.
the WORST teacher/professor I have ever had in all my years in school. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is so unbelievably disorganized its not even funny. 80% of the class is tests and his tests are impossibly hard with questions that make no sense. He also never updates his grades so you dont even know what your grade is.
Brouwer is the most unorganized and unprofessional professor I have ever had (and hopefully will ever have). He makes countless mistakes during every lecture and on every exam. Considering his lack of confidence in the material, I found the exams to be more difficult than they should have been. If I could give any advice it would be to steer clear.
I give him a 2 only because he tries, but this class was horrible. I learned nothing from lectures and relied on the book because they always had mistakes and everyone had to correct him. I just don't have the time of day to correct a professor and try to figure out what is going on with the 800 facebook posts a day. Exams don't reflect actual bio.
Was diagnosed with COVID-19 and emailed him about how my condition would affect me with anything regarding the class, and he never replied to my email. Very discouraging. All of the presentations are 80+ slides each and were scattered in a google drive. The worst teacher/professor I have ever had in my entire life.
After going online he just gave up on this class. no more zoom meetings and discussions anymore. He didn't reply to any email and sent emails afterward saying that he will catch up with us soon (but never). Anyway, he is an easy grader on this course but I have to agree with others that he is extremely disorganized.
Avoid at literally all costs. I saw he had bad reviews, but everyone had okay grades so I figured it wouldn't be bad. I was mistaken. Brouwer is a nice guy who is passionate about biology, but should not be teaching. Disorganized. Careless. Unclear. Typos in everything. I don't have enough characters to list everything wrong with this class.
Brouwer is a really tough sell for me. I ended up doing okay in the class because Top Hat decided to completely crash and mess up our grades that they needed to be fixed. I found the unit tests to be pretty easy but the final to be extremely difficult (especially after transitioning to online) I would take someone else if possible. Too much work.
As everyone said, the most disorganized professor you will ever have. Only take if he is your last option. He's nice and loves biology, but is not meant to teach it in the slightest. He makes many mistakes and uses unconventional sources like facebook and google docs for course materials and questions. We were all lucky for the final curve given.
This man was easily the worst professor I've ever had. The most disorganized, frequently spelling important concepts wrong in lecture. It was hard to keep track of what was due because of his poor ability to be precise in emails. This was supposed to be one of the easier biology classes, content wise, and I have never done worse in a biology class.
Dr. Brouwer was an extremely nice person, hence the 2 stars. Other than that, this class felt like a living hell. It was extremely disorganized and hard to keep track of. Even though I had a lot of bio knowledge from previous classes, the confusing wording on tests made it extremely difficult to scrape an A-. Would not take again.
Very disorganized. Lectures are dry. He delves deeply into unnecessary complex research papers. His test questions are worded so broadly to where there's more than one answer depending on your interpretation of it but he only wants one answer. He spent the first two weeks or so teaching us statistics. Please don't take him and just spare your GPA.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is EXTREMELY DISORGANIZED and all materials he taught are messed up. I didn't learn anything from him.
Lectures and assignments/exams aren't very well organized overall but it makes sense to him. Can get sidetracked during lectures but also goes in depth with the hr+ of time for lectures. Gives pretty detailed reading instructions from the book which really cuts down the amount of excess reading. Take notes during lecture. May repeat earlier stuff
VERY UNORGANIZED AND IS EASILY DISTRACTED! He likes to talk about recent things related to the topic so it is difficult to find specific videos about what he talks about in lecture. AVOID IF POSSIBLE!
HE MAKES U READ SO MUCH. by the end ur asking urself if u signed up for an English class, or is this a scientific reading seminar, or is this just a statistics course?????????? Recitations are advanced statistics. Homework is just reading and reading and reading. Hes nice tho! He's intelligent too! Very! but take someone else for gen bio2. Srsly...
VERY UNORGANIZED!!! Get ready to teach yourself! He is a very caring person but easily one of the worst professors I've had. His tests are heavily application based and the examples are not covered in the textbook. He gets off topic a lot and recitations are not a review of lecture material. AVOID IF POSSIBLE!
Extremely unorganized. His lectures and assignments are messy, but he is trying to make his exams harder. Pay attention to your quality of teaching not grading please, Dr. Brouwer!
I had Professor Brouwer for Bio 2 for the Fall of 2020. His grading system changed and is now doing 6 unit tests and one optional final. You are able to drop two of the unit tests and replace a third with your score on the final (if you do better than your lowest grade). Everything that is on the tests has been revied in lecture word for word.
This is the most incompetent professor I have every taken (not an insult, just the truth). I somehow managed to get an B+ in this class, but what surprises me even more is how this man managed to get a job here. Cannot keep anything in order, assigns things like he doesn't think you are taking any other classes, and test questions are ridiculous.
Dr. Brouwer really is not as bad as people on here make him out to be. This semester there were 6 exams, and you get to drop your lowest 2. There are also 2 buffer questions on each exam. Lectures are asynchronous which is nice. While he can be confusing in his wording at times, he is open to constructive feedback and willing to accommodate.
He's a very nice person who's willing to change his class (final optional, 2 of 5 tests dropped, dropped final project). With that being said, I expected 1540 to be about all of biology, not just ecology and evolution. Canvas was disorganized af and I did not learn much, but if you're a non-cs student, then learning R might be cool.
I took him for Biosc0160 and didnt love it. He isnt the most organized professor and def focuses on subjects he likes. However, was by far the most understanding prof I had during a pandemic which meant a ton. He was always willing to extend due dates and help you out. Hes not the best teacher ever but he is probably one of the nicest.
Disorganized but very lenient and accommodating. Overall very nice professor, easy to reach outside of class, and grades nicely. Lectures can be unclear but he's knowledgable about the subjects he teaches.
I was worried about taking this professor after reading his reviews but personally I had no issues with him. Despite being online, I felt that he offered many resources and answered any email I had quite quickly. He told you what was going to be on the exams and the exams were not difficult. Give him a chance!
Brouwers class was my easiest this semester. The grade is comprised mainly of 6 exams, the top 4 of which are kept, and an optional final to again replace the lowest score. In essence, its 7 tests and you have to do well on 4. The tests were pretty straightforward but worded trickily (reminded me of sat questions). Lectures are important but fun.
Don't take him. I failed every test despite studying for weeks before and understanding the material completely. I could recite lectures by memory but couldn't pass a test. Save yourself the agony.
He is awful. Do not take his class. I dont even understand how he got a PHD. He genuinely made me hate biology and I changed my major. Everything about him was truly so awful. He didnt know how to teach, he took 10 years to release grades for tests even though they were automatic. Save yourself and take ANYONE else. Hes an unintelligent idiot.
He is probably very different synchronously, but I love his virtual class so far. The lecture is divided into small videos, and questions afterwards worth participation points. When he makes typos, he corrects it, and increases our grades generously ( I am saying like 10%). Great guy, though havent interacted much. Made me love bio again!
Class was clear and well organized. In the online format, his lectures were broken down into 5-15 minute segments so you could do them whenever and find info for review easily. Don't bother reading the book, all test materials come from lectures. Come to office hours if you have questions; he's patient with us, very quick when replying to e-mails.
Nathan Brouwer has to be the worst professor I've taken here at Pitt. He's so unorganized, doesn't teach information that matters for exams, and makes so many mistakes during lectures. The only reason his exams are hard is because no one ever knows what's going to be on them. Avoid Brouwer. Save yourself.
Honestly, I don't know why Dr. Brouwer has so many bad reviews because I loved the format of his class - everything is asynchronous where his lectures are prerecorded and can be done at your own leisure. Also, I never read the book because everything was in his lectures. Exams are open notes and very doable if you pay attention and take notes!
If you do all the lectures, and all the problems he gives you, and actually do recitation and take recitation seriously, you will do very very well on exams. Too many people are complaining that he is impossible, but exam questions are literally straight from lecture. Yes, you have to extrapolate and actually think a lot. Welcome to college!
this class is very manageable. brouwer is disorganized, but he teaches you everything you need to know for the tests and adds a few buffer points so you can miss a few and still do well! i honestly feel like hes your best option for bio 2. way better than those horrendous bio 1 tests. dont read the textbook, just do lec and rec material
He is very lecture-heavy, make sure you watch them because they are the only thing that will be covered on the tests. Do not bother reading the textbook, you have to study hard for the tests, but the worst part is how disorganized he is. He has a mistake on every test and lecture and doesn't always give points back. Avoid if possible, but is doable
I don't really understand all of the negative reviews Dr. Brouwer has because he provides all of the information you need in his lectures for his exams and goes over important concepts multiple times. As long as you're watching lectures and being somewhat proactive, Dr. Brouwer is a great option for Bio 2 and he is also a very nice guy.
Honestly, this professor wasn't bad, but I wouldn't recommend him to a friend. The class contains of 6 tests which make up over 80% of your overall grade. Most of the rest of the grade is participation in the MOUNTAIN of lecture material he has. He is a pretty fair grader, but his test questions are tricky. Book is nice, but it isn't 100% needed.
I found Nathans class to be pretty good. Hes organized and lectures well, if not a bit dry. He does have a HUGE amount of lecture material, but not out of reason. The grading scale is the biggest issue, theres 6 exams a term but large amounts of work outside that, however the other material really doesnt apply to the overall grade.
I wish I liked evolution because he really designed our class to focus on it. I can say that from the class I learned the R basics. I came back to check his reviews because I really thought he is not a bad professor like these reviews suggest. I found the best way for him to teach is when he breaks topics into units and that was when we learned R.
He is very caring, will work with you to master topics, has great lectures, and does a really good job explaining. Exams are hard - but prepare you well for MCAT and critical thinking exams and life. A lot of analysis. Was more than willing to go over questions in detail and help. Only cons: Canvas modules disorganized, and slow responder to emails
MUST READ. Brouwer is a very knowledgeable professor and good at teaching bio 2 topics. It took me some time to figure out how to do well on his tests, but definitely possible to ace this class. There are biweekly quizzes. 1 quiz drop for lowest grade and optional final to replace 2nd lowest grade. Tip : go to TA office hours and ask questions!
Brouwer's class is mostly made up of 6 exams (drop one). The topics get easier as you progress through the course so keep that in mind if you get discouraged. He's a bit unorganized with Canvas but its manageable. I watched the lecture vids and took detailed notes as opposed to the textbook and did well.
This was the worst class I've taken thus far at Pitt. Dr. Brouwer, although like most professors was polite and nice, is incredibly unorganized. He's a late grader and his lectures are never ending (I took this course online, but I have not heard good things abt his in person classes) He also corrects himself bc he teaches info wrong initially.
It's the end of the semester, I have an A, and I have no idea what I've learned. You do a lot of busy work that is super unhelpful. He doesn't seem to have a plan for each lecture. He seems to just spew random facts about computational biology and he takes a lot of time repeating himself on straight-forward info, but speeds through harder material.
So extremely unorganized. Grade book was so confusing, I honestly don't think he really knew what was going on either. He was very caring and kind but talked about himself a lot. Test answers repeated which made the final very easy, got 100%. Never showed up to class, taught myself the material from the practice tests.
Professor Brouwer is a really great professor in all aspects for this class. Although the class may get a little confusing in regards to what is due as he is a bit unorganized, he is really accessible through email and office hours and the UTA's were really helpful in knowing what was due if there was any confusion!
Brouwer is a nice guy, but that doesn't make up for his lack of teaching skills. This man is very disorganized as he is constantly correcting himself and going over the same notes. He assigns many 2 and 3 point quizzes on canvas that do nothing for grades. He provides exam rematch questions that don't give points back nor are correct. Save yourself
Worst biology professor I've ever had. Never consistent with his teaching style, changing the way he lectures all the time, not all the material is made available and you never know what will be, exams are HEAVILY weighted and difficult with unnecessarily specific questions, and he's unbelievably disorganized. Do not take if you have the option.
Do not take. Worst professor I've ever had. Very disorganized in lectures, and on canvas. He will switch between multiple topics during the same lecture, and doesn't even know his own material. He can never answer the questions asked in class. You never know what will be on the exams. I can't think of one nice thing to say.
Dr. Brouwer is incredibly disorganized, it's almost impossible to know what assignments are due. There are tons of assignments but almost none actually factor into our grade and he frequently puts the wrong answers on canvas. His lectures are ridiculously disorganized and we barely covered half of the material we were supposed to for this class.
Dr. Brouwer is very disorganized and unprepared for lectures. His assignments are not weighted towards final grade although he assigns MANY quizzes/HW "quizzes". These often have incorrect answers listed and typos and do not help to boost your grade. We take 3 exams- which have many typos- you can drop 1. I would avoid this class if possible.
Brouwer is unbelievably disorganized, an unnecessary challenge for a foundational course that a vast majority of students who come to Pitt have to take for their major. There are few if any reminders about when Canvas assignments are due, and exams containing unnecessarily specific questions make up 80% of your grade. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Veryyy lecture heavy. He's decent, not too difficult to do well as long as you pay attention and study. He's very disorganized which can make studying difficult but it's not as bad as some people make it seem.
simply not fair
I typically would consider myself a strong biology student, succeeding in AP bio and bio 1 without much of an issue. However, Brouwer's extreme disorganization both in lecture and on Canvas made it incredibly difficult to gather study materials and keep track of assignments, causing my grade and my overall quality of learning to suffer greatly.
I would consider myself to be an above average biology student, however, I struggled greatly in this class due to the lack of organization by Dr. Brouwer and him not be clear with what material would and would not be on the test. The exams make up the majority of your grade, with a bunch of small assignments that have little to no impact.
Professor Brouwer is pretty disorganized, but if you do all the homework and study for the exams you should be fine. He offers a lot of extra credit and "buffer points" on exams. He is also very helpful outside of class, so if your confused go to his office hours!
I have never met a man as disorganized as Nathan Brouwer. It was almost MORE difficult to understand the class material if you attended lecture. I frequently had to read the textbook/watch Youtube videos to get a basic grasp of concepts, his canvas page is a mess, and he'll make mistakes in his slides and even exam questions. Take someone else.
He is just about the worst professor you could have. He is extremely disorganized, teaches your fake biology concepts, and cannot form coherent thoughts. His canvas page is a mess; there is little to no way to do well in his class. Do not take him.
He is not accessible, he is terrible in all aspects. He is standoffish when you ask him questions and his office hours barely helped me when I went to them. his tests were nothing like any of the concepts he taught in his class and almost the entire class ended up failing this semester. If you want even a passing grade, do not go with him.
Brouwer was VERY disorganized with assigning work and it was hard to determine how to study for Exams, but with him dropping your lowest exam and the way the final exam is formatted, it is not impossible to do well in this class. He is not good at communicating with his students, and is very lecture heavy.
This class was so difficult solely due to Brouwer's lack of organization. It was v difficult to find notes and his assignments were all over the place. I found that reading the textbook was very helpful. In order, I got a 64, 79, and 94 on the 3 exams and ended with an A (v complicated grading system). The rematches were identical to the final tho.
Listen, this man is so unorganized it ruins everything. The material isn't difficult but you really have to pay attention to everything he says. He makes mistakes on everything and overall, hes just not worth taking. Take someone else
I have absolutely no clue how I got an A in this class. The Canvas page was a flaming hot mess, the tests asked the absolute dumbest/irrelevant questions, and I can confidently say I learned nothing from his chaotic error-ridden lectures. The material would have been a lot easier if he gave us the resources we needed to learn/practice ourselves.
Dr. Brouwer is insanely disorganized and sometimes teaches the wrong material which can make it difficult for finding online resources. He taught his own recitations and uses that material on the exams. I would use the slides that he releases before lecture to study the material but make sure to write down what he says because he tests on that.
Brouwer is extremely disorganized and gives you a bunch of homework that doesn't contribute to your grade at all. He struggles to grade the exams that HE created, and most of your time will be spent deciphering what you wrote in class. I was stressed all semester, but doing well on the final saved my grade. It wasn't worth it - choose anyone else.
Dr. Brouwer is very disorganized, which makes this class more difficult than it needs to be. He makes things up and often has very poorly (or even just incorrectly) written test questions. The only plus is his grading system allows your grade to go up a LOT at the end as you can drop one midterm and replace another with a final subsection.
This class was awful and I don't think I learned anything. He did not stick to his timeline so we ended up not learning about evolution at all, which is the unit I was looking forward to the most. The only reason I did well is because the final allows you to greatly improve your grade.
Brouwer has to hands down be the worst teacher I have ever had. He is extremely disorganized and his PowerPoints are so redundant. He will spend an entire class and 50 slides to teach 2 things that are barely relevant. I taught myself the entire class. He was infuriating to listen to and his stupid 1 question quizzes were useless.
Dr. Brouwer was just a confusing professor and very disorganized. also the exams are literally so unpredictable. I never know what to study. it's actually a miracle that I got a B he must have done some serious curving because there's just no way
Literally all the people on here are complaining about how bad his class was when they got A's. He wasn't amazing but people are exaggerating. Yes, he is very disorganized and his canvas page is really annoying, but other than that the class is not bad. Just put in effort and you'll be fine. Lowest exam score drops and final replaces second lowest.
He does not care about the students whatsoever. Very smart man he might need to reconsider teaching though.
Dr. Brouwer is so unorganized, yet very intelligent. This man had us read his own textbook that he wrote, to find errors before he published it. This is not a challenging class, but the specifics he makes you know lead to more memorization than actual learning of the processes. He is not worth the trouble of trying to understand what he teaches.
Dr. Brouwer is one of the worst professors I have ever had. The majority of your grade (80+%) is based on exams, which are difficult to succeed on due to his disorganization. Information from study materials conflicts with information from class. There are typos on every exam and many of them will cause you to lose points. Avoid at all costs.
The absolute worst, super smart incredibly disorganized boring lectures all grades are from exams that make no sense. Information contradicts itself on exam. Canvas page is the god awful take someone else and just let this man focus on getting published
Taken as a gen ed by a non-STEM major. Class is easy enough and if you put in a little effort you will be successful. Lectures are boring and tedious but aren't required. Little work outside of class. Doable if you can't find another natural science gen ed, but not ideal.
Really smart guy. The class was just so confusing. The content was easy, but lectures did not correlate to the exams. The homework assignments were so easy you lose interest so don't worry if you've never programmed before. Lenient with grading and happy to help in office hours. He just needs to organize the class better, but you can easily pass.
Disorganized. Rarely could answer class questions. Started multiple lectures with "So I misspoke last class and gave you wrong information..." Creates a bunch of random assignments. You will never get feedback on them. Instructions will never be clear. You will never know what actually counts towards your grade. Exams are fine.
It's not hard to do well in his class, he's just extremely unorganized and it literally makes the class painful. None of his lectures seem to connect and he talks about the same few things over and over again. Studying for exams is impossible; I just went through his lectures again because he doesn't post his edited notes. Overall, eh
Dr. Brouwer's lectures generally consisted of him repeating the same content over again. Unrelated material was put on exams, so no matter how hard I studied, I never did fantastic. Would strongly discourage taking classes with him, especially if it's a "for non-majors" class because he treats it as if it's for majors.
Honestly a really nice guy and his exams are actually on the easier side if you pay attention in class. His lectures were a bit all over the place though and the recitation submissions were confusing. Overall not bad to get a decent grade but probably not the best in terms of how much you learn.
The 4 exams are worth 82% of your final grade with no dropped exams, no extra credit, no curve, & no opportunity to earn points back other than what are called "exam rematches" which are basically you retaking the exam before you even know what grade you got. His lecture slides are 300+ slides making it painful to even attempt to look over them.
Nathan Brouwer is quite the professor. Your exam grade makes up most of the grade (82% of the class), but here is the catch, no drops, and does not post averages. Do not take the class if you are trying learn Biology, difficult when he goes over 350+ slides a lecture. When I asked for guidance, he said "withdrawing is an option you know".
Test questions are terrible, super disorganized.
He is very disorganized and you need to be ready to apply the knowledge to do well on his exams. There is a lot of info and he expects you to know it extremely well, but he is very knowledgeable and helpful. If you put in a lot of time, an A is definitely possible.
If you don't have a B in this class at the least then you either don't pay attention don't come to class or put in minimal work. The test questions are hardly applications it's just knowing basic processes. if you go through his slides (i know they are long) you will definitely succeed in this class. I wait until 3 days prior to study and do fine.
Dr. Brouwer's teaching style did not work for me. He switched the slides so fast, there wasn't any time to even process them. Test questions were super weird. SUPER disorganized. There were so many random worksheets and his slides were painful to scroll through. Recitation was a huge waste of time, and even more confusing.
He's extremely disorganized and will never answer your emails. His exams were difficult, specifically the case studies he threw on there randomly. He doesn't post the slides before class, just after but he has every transition as a slide so you will be scrolling through hundreds of slides. He has some good demonstrations though.
He obviously cares about what HE does. Class is exam heavy with material from slides (which are not posted beforehand) and he goes super ridiculously fast through course content. A lot of weird worksheets that really don't help you understand the material for exams.
I loved Brouwer's lectures, they kept me engaged throughout the one hour and fifteen minute period. There is a lot of material covered each class and thus his slides are super long but I never thought it made the material hard to understand. He provides extra credit opportunities and a lot of ways to practice material before exams.
Dr. Brouwer was a pretty good professor for the semester. Lectures can be a little boring especially if you're not interested in the topic and tests can be a little difficult but he sometimes allows for corrections.
If you are a computer scientist just don't bother you will not learn anything. He doesn't really go into how any of these computer programs actually work or how to design them, the course is very surface level and lots of pointless memorization. You won't get much out of this class.
I would not take Dr. Brouwer again. Truthfully, I don't know how I even passed his class. His lectures have about 150 slides in each lecture and has a new slide deck each day, but a lot of them are repeats. Disorganized material and lectures. He is definitely passionate about his work, but not the best instruction. Exams are difficult. Decent guy.
Dr. Brouwer is a really nice guy. You can tell he's really passionate about the material and enjoys teaching. I can't say he's the greatest teacher, but his comp bio class was a fairly easy A. Had him for bio 2 as well, and it was a similar deal.
His lectures are hundreds of slides long and are super difficult to follow. It is really hard to stay engaged in class and he is super unorganized. Tests are basically your whole grade but he does this weird replacement thing with the final. He is a smart guy he is just not a good teacher at all.
By far, the worst professor I have had till now. His tests are the most unpredictable on this planet, and his slides are so disorganized. Apparently he curves if everyone did bad on a test, and does this weird replacement thing with the final which replaces your first three exam scores if you do good on it.
Severely disorganized lecturer. Inaccessible online (did not respond to several emails over several weeks regarding an exam). Every person I know who took his class (previously) had to retake with another professor, either for grades or for comprehension. Avoid at all costs if you need to retain the material for future classes/med school.
Dr. Brouwer is the WORST professor I have ever had in my life. His lectures are so unorganized, he talks in circles, and he is VERY unaccessible outside of class. His slides are 300+ long, and he doesn't post them until after lectures. His canvas page is a NIGHTMARE. Exams are basically your only grade and he doesn't drop. DO NOT take Brouwer.
Dr. Brouwer is by far the least organized professor Ive had. He tends to ramble A LOT and and his lecture slides are 200+. Someone needs to teach him how to use transitions and maybe give him a few adderall while they're at it. His lectures also extend into recitation and he uses it as a time to just teach new content. Exams are hard.
Terrible all around. Terrible class organization, poor teaching ability, terrible tests. Everything is bad. Do not take this guys class please save yourself the time and stress.
Didn't like him as a lecturer. added new content to his slides before the final and expected us to know it. exams were way too difficult and required a lot of unclear connections to content he hadn't emphasized or taught us.
Dr. Brouwer is the most unorganized professor I've ever had. He uses slide decks from previous years with hundreds of slides that he tries to update while lecturing. Some lectures he would barely cover any new material while others would be 200 slides of new terminology.
Nathan Brouwer is a terrible proffessor. He is incredibly disorganized and does not know how to teach. Lectures are entertaining, but only because he acts like he does a line of coke before every class. Test questions are either random facts directly from his 200 slide presentations or complete application. Do not take him unless you're a bio god.
Very unorganized and confusing. Lectures are 200+ slides that could easily be squished down to 20. Office hours are unorganized. Unresponsive to emails. Exam material not clear. You have to teach yourself stuff. Grading scale unclear. Nearly finals week yet his canvas page still has the week 1 schedule only. The rest of the canvas page is a mess.
I didn't understand things most of the time in this class because of the way he presented lectures. He jumped around from topic to topic, confusing students. He has vague fill-in-the-blank questions on tests that nobody knows how to answer. He often goes on tirades that don't matter, like how his brother runs a hairless dog puppy mill.
He's literally the reason why i'm dropping my bio major. Worst professor I've had so far. So incredibly unorganized. His exams have mistakes all over them and he needs to correct them in the middle of the exam. His slides are 300+ slides long which is super inconvenient. Literally stopped studying for exams because it was such a joke. AVOID!!!!
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! By far the worst professor I have had. His exams are 85% of the grade and he often makes mistakes on the exams or will have questions based on his own interests that isn't found in the textbooks and barely has information online. He gives roughly 200 assignments that are only 7% of your grade. Very unorganized
This class was a mess, canvas has over 200 assignments that are so hard to find with the amounts of links he posts and reposts. Lectures all over the place, would being up unnecessary info and tangents. The only good thing is the final, it will replace your overall average so you could fail all the exams and get 100 on the final you still get an A+
Lectures are very disorganzied and slideshows were normally 150-200 slides long. Exams weren't too difficult, however there would be random questions on topics he barely covered in lecture. Lots of practice problems available on canvas, but they were usually easier than exam questions. He is a funny guy who knows what he's talking about.
He was very nice guy. I personally did not do well with the fill in the blank portions on his test and he had them on the final as well. His grading system is kinda strange and all over the place with a lot of two question quizzes due.
Most disorganized professor I've ever taken. The lectures are 300 slides sometimes, because he likes to make it a semi-animated slideshow. Makes it hard to go over after class or before exam because note taking in class is a task not meant for the weak. You don't know which definition to write down as he skips through each slide every 10 seconds.
He is very disorganized has multiple quizzes which are worth just one point but it becomes very hard to keep track of them. Tests were very hard, only good thing is that you get another attempt at them during the final. Has 300+ slides per lec and does not go over content properly in class. Questions on the test are weirdly worded. DO NOT TAKE!!!
I am writing a second review just to STRONGLY recommend NOT taking him. Altho I am good at bio i struggled a lot. Till date I am not sure of the content I learnt in his class. Has a lot of questions in his tests and they are worded weirdly. He also interrupts and corrects his tests in between the ongoing exam. Multiple 1pt quizzes which do NOT help
3rd review: YALL PLS DO NOT TAKE!! He is a great guy and accessible outside of class but he will make it very hard for you to pass the class. Although if you do happen to be in his class follow up with the material from the start and perform well in the midterms so that you do not have to stress for the final. there are total 2 attempts for exams.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! Tests are overall worth over 85% of your final grade and the questions either don't make sense or do not have a correct answer even though he claims the questions came from previous years. The only nice thing is that the final exam is broken into 4 parts and can replace the first 3 exams if you do better. Wasn't worth the stress.
Dr. B is accessible and passionate about biology, but his disorganization adds unnecessary confusion. I got an A and I don't read the book at all, but make sure to put my time studying towards the notes and recitation assignments. His notes tend to be 200+ slides long which can be frustrating but if you study a few days early you can get an A.
As everyone else has said; just don't take him! Exams are worth way too much (yet you won't learn anything). I am still unsure how I managed an A. My tip (if you HAVE to take him) is to make flashcards on what is discussed heavily in the slides at least a week before the exams. For the final, take notes+ review EVERY slide set and the past exams!
Most people here that hate on him also got As. Yes his lectures are 200+ slides BUT HALF OF THEM ARE PICTURES! I would recomend you study for the exam at least 3 days in advance so you are not cramming everything last minute. Final replaces exam grades, I got a 71 on my second exam and got a 102 on the final. Ended the class with a 101.23!
You guys bullied the poor man out of Pitt. He was great to have in class and was always available for help in office hours. Not hard to do well.
Awful. Do not take him he is beyond disorganized and should not be teaching
Do not take Brouwer's class. He has 200+ slides in his decks, 90% of which is completely nonsensical and repeated. 20-25 Canvas assignments per week and you never know which ones count for credit. Grades are virtually ALL exams with no drops, a lot of which is just based on random things he says in lecture. Take LITERALLY any other professor!!!
Run now! The test accounts for high overall grade and the questions are very difficult. He has so many weired assigment. His PPT is very disorganized, so I suggest you read through the textbook first, then review the PPT. I took one exam 90+ and the rest of the exams were around 85 before I got an A, but god knows how much time was put into that.
I enjoyed this class but I was actually interested in the material rather than just figuring out ways to get an A. My advice is to not stress over the busy work, try to enjoy what you're learning, do flash cards and you'll be fine.
Professor B's class is challenging, but if you put in the work, you can succeed. Utilize resources like Unstuck study alongside the textbook and past exams to prepare for the tough tests. Stay on top of the material from the start, and the final exam can help offset earlier struggles.
He's so unorganized. Everyday he has a lecture with 200+ slides. Lmk why I am being tested more on geography than biology? Tests were difficult and he almost always made a mistake on them and silently would write a note on the projector like "this word should actually be this word on problem 7" which also almost always would change the answer.AVOID
IDK about his other classes, but if you are a bio student and want to take Bio 2, there is no better teacher than him. Bro loves science, bro breaths science, he teaches like he is having the best time of his life. And if you need help, at any time, he's got time for you. He will get you ready for your upper-level classes, with an A.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR BIO 2!!! I cannot stress this enough. he's a great person but a concerningly disorganized professor. His lectures? I could not sit through a single one. He messed up grading and the class painfully disengaging. I was praying for his lectures to end. Again, very sweet person. Should-be-avoided professor.
