I am not a math person and I loved this class. Dr. Druivenga explained the test material clearly. There are practice exams available on the math website that are great study material. The exams are almost identical to the practice exams. DO NOT SKIP REC! Skipping the rec for this class impacts your grade, missing twice is 70/100 for your rec grade
Nathan is a caring professor, He doesn't get frustrated and I am pretty sure for him there are no dumb questions. He wants to teach you and cares that you specifically understand the materal. For his class sit up front and he will like you. He is also dorky as hell and has a really big heart. go to his office hours, he will be really helpful.
I had him for MA 109 and he is a great teacher. Planning on taking MA 123 with him next semester!
He is very helpful, and good at what he teaches! He also goes over the past exams in class, so you know what to expect before you take one!
Nathan is an angel sent down from Heaven to help make my math life easier. I enjoy walking into lecture MWF.
I had Professor Druivenga for Calc 123 this semester. He's a great teacher, outlines the course topic very well, provides in depth help on the homework, spends his office hours in the Mathskellar, and is great at preparing students for exams. Great guy, even better teacher!
I do math with Nate o rama at least 3 times a week for lecture, and perhaps more if i see him outside of the lecture. This man took me from a student who hasn't taken a math class in 5 years to a calc star. god bless you Nathan
Highly recommend him over any other teacher for MA 123.
He went at a very steady pace, that kept the class easy by his lectures. Learned a lot from him. My favorite Math teacher yet!
Great guy. Really understanding.
Awesome teacher but you have to go to class if you want to pass. He does put the notes online and the past exams so thats good. The topic is hard it self so pay attention and he is easy to talk to if you don't understand something. I did not do well on exams so I have to retake this class.
I had already taken calculus before, but had to take it for core. He did a great job of explaining things in class, and went over examples most of the time which is great. He made sure you were aware of what was going on as far as tests and homework. Pretty genuine in lecture, and will share funny stories at random
Nathan is a very good professor, one of the best math professors I've had. He has random mini quizzes on webassign which are kind of pop quizzes. He explains everything in class so show up but if you don't you aren't super penalized. Exams are a piece of cake.
Would absolutely recommend this class. He is one of the best professors I have ever had. He presents material in a very understanding way. He also gives you materials to help you succeed. Also, during exams if you ask for help, he will help you. He is also very funny and tells stories.
He is a great professor. His lectures gave direct details of what was on the exams. I met with him several times after class in office hours and a couple appointments when I couldn't make office hours. He is very open to working with you and helping you get a good grade on exams and on the overall class. I enjoyed his teaching styles.
His lectures align very closely with what is on the exams. He was always willing to meet and help me outside of class, in office hours or on appointment. I loved his teaching methods and occasionally joking! Taking him again this semester! Highly recommend!
He is by far the best MA teacher I've had. I learn by doing practice problems, and that is all that he does. Most of the problems he does in class comes directly from the homework. The tests are pretty easy too, if you use the practice exams he uploads, it is an easy A.
After taking a beating in Calculus 3, my love for math had diminished. But Nathan Druivenga's Calc 4 class has helped me rediscover my love for the subject. He is very clear about what he expects from his students, and is straightforward in his testing. His exams are about what you learned in class, no tricks. Druivenga is a god among nerds.
Makes learning math easy even if it is at 8 am. Instead of being irrelevant in lecture, he does mainly practice problems that are similar to test questions and homework problems! Although there is a lot of homework he ensures you have needed work to get it done and prepare for the test. Attendance questions daily though.
Great professor! He really knows that students have a lot better things to do then spends hours on calculus. Turned a really hard class into something that is manageable. 10/10 would recommend.
Druivenga is great at explaining complex topics and is always willing to help out on homework. He's very clear about what will be on quizzes and tests and they are structured so that you have opportunities for partial credit. If you get stuck on a quiz question, he is great about pointing you in the right direction.
By far best math professor I have ever had, maybe even best professor period. Explains hard things in a way that you can really understand. Does tons of examples like the HW. His notes are awesome. His reviews for exams are exactly what will be on test. Always willing to answer questions. Would definitely take again, wish I got him for MA162 too!
350 characters are not enough to explain how awesome of a math professor Dr. Nathan is. This man is a miracle, he can take something so complex and make it as simple as 2+2. The best thing about him though is that he really cares for his students and wants to make sure you know whats going on.
Absolutely loved him. If you are unsure who to chose, pick druivenga! He is passionate caring and understanding. Going to his office hours you can easily achieve an A!! You show the effort, and he will do his best to teach you and allow you to be a sucesful student. One of my favorite professors, I really couldn't say anything bad about him 10/10
Greatest Math Professor alive. If you want to take MA 214 with anyone, its Dr. D
Dr. D is my favorite professor at UK! He makes the content so easy to understand and he genuinely cares about his students. He once stopped me outside after an exam to ask how I thought it went. He will change the due dates of homework if it covers topics that haven't been covered in class yet. Lectures are based on exam practice questions.
Dr. Druivenga is the best math teacher I have ever had. His lectures are carefully thought out and his examples are very helpful. He releases old exams to study from and they are very similar to the actual exams. You can tell that he cares about how his students do so I would 100% recommend you take his class.
I loved Druivenga!! He always does examples in class like the homework, and the tests are easy if you study the past exams. He is super friendly, and I highly recommend him for MA123 if possible. He does REEF online attendance, so you need to be there to enter in your answers.
Dr. D is the best math teacher I've ever had. He does lots of exams that are almost identical to the homework problems. This class is really easy, especially if you have taken calculus before.
Dr. Druivenga is the absolute best!! His lectures are very clear and understandable, and he is very caring. He always stops to ask if anyone has questions with anything, and will go out of his way to explain something in a different way if need-be. If you plan on taking MA123, be sure to take Druivenga. Best math instructor I've ever had!
Dr. Druivenga is amazing at teaching. He is nice, funny, and respectful to his students. You can ask him any questions and he puts a lot of effort into helping students. Tests are easy if you do the hw and practice old exams.
Great prof! Would take him again if I ever get the chance!
Hes a great professor! Whenever I needed help with the class or with my grade he was very caring and loved to help. If you ever need a great professor to take for math 123 take him.
I highly recommend Druivenga. He does practice problems that are exactly like the homework problems so you will always know how to do your homework. If you are confused about something he will always explain a problem more to help you understand.
Druivenga is a very chill dude. He breaks down the material well and the exams are exactly like the practice exams. Easy A if you can memorize. Attendance only counted second semester but it's all extra credit so you don't HAVE to go.
i love druivenga! i had him for both 123 and 162 and i would take him again for both. neither are easy subjects but he explains them well. if you study past exams you can make a's on the tests for both classes.
One of my favorite professors at UK. He fully explains the material and the examples he does in class are exactly like the homework. Not only a great teacher but also a really cool guy. I enjoyed him so much I took 162 with him.
GREAT prof. he explains everything so clearly & if you ask a question he'll actually give good help. One of my favorite prof at UK very chill guy. cant wait to have him again this year
Druivenga is one of my favorite professors. He is super caring and will help you however he can. He makes a difficult subject relatable and more understandable. Lecture is important, although it doesn't really matter in your grade. He drops 2 homeworks and give you 5 or 6 free skips for Reef. Also really liked him in MA123.
He uploads his class notes to canvas but going to class is much more helpful. He clearly lays out what will and won't be on the weekly quizzes and exams. He always makes the homework and exam practice problems much harder than the exams, so it makes exams easy. You can't use a calculator but you don't need it, if you do, you've done something wrong
He's Awesome. Period.
Dr. Druivenga is by far the best math professor I've ever had. He explains everything very well and goes over anything you're confused on. If you're having any trouble with a homework problem he'll work through it with you and make sure you understand it. If you are at all able to take any of his classes I would highly recommend it.
Nathan is by far the most thorough professor at UK. He post all lecture slides, tons of old exams, and does plenty of examples to make sure you understand. The only way you couldn't pass this class is if you don't show up, do none of the homework, and bomb every exam.
I have loathed every math class I have ever had in my entire life, but I actually looked forward to going because of him. Very funny and easy to talk to. This class isn't that difficult if you put in minimal effort. The exams are very similar to the practice tests, so if you can do those you will be fine.
Druivenga is hands down the best professor I have had in 4 years at UK. His lectures explain the material so easily and if you put in the work he will do everything that he can to help you succeed.
He posts all notes on Canvas. He constantly asks if there are any questions & answers them in a respectful, clear manner. When exam time comes around, he clearly states what will be covered & gives lots of practice problems. He's a funny guy, too! I'm not a fan of math, but he made calculus so simple. Loved him so much that I'm taking him again!
He is the best professor I have had here at UK. He tries to make class easy and interesting to learn. He is constantly asking to make sure everything is clear & understanding. Great guy!!!
Great math teacher.
This guy is the best math teacher I have ever had. He WANTS you to ask questions and is super nice about everything. Does attendance off of reef, so you don't have to go if someone sends you the answers, but would definitely go. Good teacher and a good guy. If you don't take him, it would be a huge mistake!
The absolute best professor I have ever had. He does a great job at making difficult concepts easy to understand. He is always open to answer your questions and help you out but only if you put in effort. If you have the chance to take a course with Dr Druivenga you should. You will learn a lot and enjoy the course.
Dr. Druivenga was an alright professor. His lectures could get a bit heavy sometimes, but they were always helpful. If you show up to class, he will usually go over what will be on homework and tests. We did get 5 skips though, which was nice. Taking him again next semester for 162 and feel pretty good about it.
This guy is the best!! I have never been proficient in math, and I managed to get an A in both classes I took with him. He explains exactly what is on the test in lecture, take notes. When studying, all you have to do is go over old exams and they prepare you wonderfully. Definitely definitely take a class with him!
He was a really great professor and explained everything really well.
Material is very easy, druivenga is by far my favorite professor at UK. He is amazing at clarifying and making difficult things easy.
This class is not challenging if you just show up to class. He is an amazing professor
Took Calc4 with Druivenga pretty scared since everyone said it was only taught by old men who go to the board and babble. Druivenga is a diamond in the rough of the math department who clearly explains things and keeps things simple instead of over complicating work. What matters is that you know the tested material, not a bunch of hard math.
Great teaching, always helpful and accessible
hes a good teacher but they completely restructured the class and it is definitely harder than before, class average on exams were always around a 77-79% very strict about grading policy but is a good teacher!
I have never had such a concise and helpful math professor. Druivenga is not only organized and covers all necessary material, but for the most part he makes math more simple instead of more complicated. He is a likeable guy and a fair grader.
The fact that I am taking MA123 with Professor Druivenga most likely has some influence on my rating. However, it is a challenging class with a good amount of homework and out of class studying required. The lectures are just examples... every class you go to, the only thing you will do is go over examples of problems. No notes or anything else.
Love, love, love him! He is super nice and chill and makes going to math class not so bad. He really helps prepare for exams, but if you dont go to class, you will really struggle. There is a lot of homework but he goes over it with you before its due so it is usually pretty easy, again, as long as you go to class. He really cares about students
MA123 is not a hard class if you've had prior calculus experience. I did not, so I found the course challenging, but Druivenga is a great professor that simplifies the material. Take the practice exams to do well on the actual exams. He also tells funny stories in class and has funny opening iclicker questions to boost your average
He is an amazing lecturer who provides relevant examples and explains things clearly & thoroughly. He does his best to hint at exactly what will be quizzed/tested on in class so it's beneficial to attend. Sit in the front and participate so he gets to know your face. He goes over HW questions in class on Fridays so come prepared!
He is very good at lectures and makes the material easy to understand. Even through having to go online, he did his best to make the material easy to learn and is always looking to help his students do better.
He really helps non-math students pass. He breaks things down in a very easy to understand way. He will help you during lectures and if you go to office hours which I highly recommend doing if you don't understand the math. I had him at 8am 3 days a week and he always made class interesting enough to want to get out of bed and go.
He is a wonderful professor who is caring and wants his students to do well. His lectures, whether they are in person or online, are very important for the class but he does well at explaining in detail. Please choose him.
If you do the homework it accounts for 45% of your grade. He trys very hard to make sure you get an A. Gives a lot of extra credit and the exams are mainly multiple choice and fill in the blank. The lecture videos go along with the homework which is not too difficult. The 4-5 question Quizzes you get 2 attempts and the Lecture quizzes 3 Attempts.
Professor Druivenga is a great professor, maybe one of the best I've ever had. He explains the subject so well that he makes it as easy as elementary school math. We had two sets of homework due each week, but it wasn't that time-consuming and they overall helped me do well on the exams. Exams are just like the reviews that he does.
He is a great professor! Math is not my thing but he really knew how to clearly explain step-by-step instructions and was very clear about what was expected of his students. You could tell he wanted his students to succeed and was ready to help with anything we needed.
Druivenga is a phenomenal teacher, but the content is hard (especially because we couldn't meet in person). His lectures are tedious and may seem boring, but he is really good, and teaches very well. Listen and take good notes. ALso, make sure to do the homework and take advantage of the xcredit points from it. I'm not good at math and have an A.
I never finished Calculus in high school because we were let out for Coronavirus, but Druivenga made the subject seem not so scary. Math has never been my strong suit, but his lectures were easy to follow. Thats an indicator that not only is he knowledgeable, but that hes a GREAT teacher. 10/10.
Nathan is a great professor and lays out the material for you in an easy to understand fashion. Just do your homework and you will pass the class.
All material is very clear. Being an online class, it was harder to grasp it all, but Druivenga was very fair in how the class was weighted. He even had extra credit built into the HW and multiple opportunities for extra credit with the reviews. Clear and concise professor for a class that is a pretty easy A as long as you do the work.
Great Professor. Very understanding and always available over Zoom or email. Made content very easy to understand and always willing to explain further.
This teacher has very bland lectures so make sure you attend the zooms where he works through the homework so you can ask questions. Offers reviews for the test that will help your grade since they are extra credit, but they don't really prepare you for the test. Make sure to stay on top of everything so you can receive as many points as possible.
This professor knows what he is teaching and always treats his students with respect. His grading is fair and has no problem answering questions or explaining things multiple times. The way he has structured his class makes it so you can get a low grade on his exams and still manage to get a B in his class. Absolutely loved it and highly recommend.
He is nice. He explains things decently, but he goes a little fast sometimes so make sure you keep up. Also, take screenshots of the lectures, they show exactly how to do the HW. Each week you have HW (10-20 questions), a Lecture Assessment, Recitation Assignment, and a Quiz. It's spaced out and short, but not very easy unless you are good at math.
Druivenga will go down in history as one of the only people that has been able to teach me math. He posts examples EXACTLY like the WebWork homework, which honestly saved me. Exams were open-resource. He's also just a good guy, very understanding and kind. Especially if you're not a math whiz, TAKE HIM!! He's the best.
Made his second semester online class harder just because it was online. He doesn't offer any extra credit even when people are averaging 50's on his exams. If you have a 78 in the class, getting a 100% won't help push you up at an 80.
Its a very typical class. Lectures are a little tedious but he always does examples that will be on the homework. Homework gets unlimited attempts which is nice. And, exams are very similar to previous exams, so make sure to use those when you study.
The material is hard, but Dr. Druivenga breaks it down and explains it very well. He takes very complex material and make it simple. If you can take a math class with him, do. He'll answer questions in class, or in office hours, and he's genuinely a good dude. You can tell he really enjoys teaching, and helping people learn.
My grade in this class was not his fault, I am just not good at math. Take use of the skeller for this class, youre going to need it.
Loved his classes as he would make sure everyone in the class had his full attention. He walked around many times to make sure that everyone was on the same page. Only complaint is he wasn't the most Covid safe but it was tolerable.
If you are not good at math, this class is not going be easy. That being said, Druvienga is a great teacher. There is a lot of material to cover so he moves pretty fast but he wants you to succeed so talk to him if youre struggling. Also, do not be afraid to go to the Math Skellar or The Study. Do all the homework and study hard for exams.
I would not have passed this class without Prof. Druivenga as my professor. If you care, he cares. If you have questions make sure to go to office hours. He is smart, has a great sense of humor, and lectures are easy to understand.
Math is not my thing. This professor was the only reason I passed this course. He spends ample time in the Math Skeller to make sure students get the help they need to succeed. I essentially lived there for a few weeks. I know with 100% certainty if I had ended up with any other professor, I probably wouldn't have passed.
Dr. Druivenga is by far the best math professor you could take. He give very detailed lecture notes that you can download and work through the problems while he explains them during class. He posts all blank and completed lecture slides to canvas, and gives participation points. do practice exams and you will pass exams. Highly, highly recommend
I LOVED Dr. Druivenga and this class! He explained the material well with plenty of examples so students could understand all concepts. You don't have to always attend since he posts the completed slides, but it's easier to learn the material through the lectures. The course also posts practice exams that are exactly like the real exams. SO EASY!
This was a calculus course for me and honestly, I feel like it could've gone worse. I have to say all the materials on the exams are the exact same as past exams just different numbers. He tries to help most of the time, but his sense of humor is a little sharp so some people thought he was mean. Overall, pretty alright guy with an alright class.
Go to class and you will pass. Miss class and slack off you will fail this is a class you have to go if you want to pass. Tests are very hard but fair. Its freshman calculus and a weed out class what do you expect?! Lol go to class pay attention and you will do fine
Druivenga is truly the best professor to take this course from. His lectures are heavily based upon example problems similar to what is expected on the homework and exams. He cares about his students' success and offers many services to help his students. I had friends from other sections come to his 8am bc of how helpful his lectures were.
He is the nicest person ever! You will have to work your butt off for this class but go to class, pay attention, do your best and you will pass with a C. This class is hard but it is not horrible (not as bad as chemistry lol)! He is so willing to work with you and if you go to his office hours he will tell you what to study for (he makes the exams)
I LOVE Dr. Druivenga, especially since he writes the exams and gave helpful exam hints during lectures. The material is very difficult so be prepared to put in the effort to learn it. You must attend class to understand the material since it's all mostly difficult to teach yourself. If you study homework problems and review slides you will pass.
I had to retake this class and he still did nothing to help me do better. He gets mad when students ask for him and makes it seem like its inconveniencing him. Everyone I know ruined their GPA with this class and he knows it. Would never take him again.
Druivenga is easily one of the best professors you can take. We had 2 homework question sets a week, but got unlimited attempts to answer. His review days are super similar to the exams! As long as you actually try to understand the content and attend review days, you'll pass with an east A! I barely went to lecture and got a 100 on every exam!!
Druivenga is easily one of the best professors you can take. We had 2 homework sets a week, but you got unlimited attempts to answer. His review days are super similar to the exams! Dr. Druivenga makes calc bearable and is able to "dumb things down" so you can actually understand the material. He is a great lecturer. There were 2 HW sets pretty much every week, but you get unlimited attempts so it's impossible to not get 100% if you try. Exams are a little difficult, but if you study you should be more than fine.
Great professor, really makes you understand math. However, his exams throw that out the window. He also provides no retakes or extra credit.
Was clear about assignments and gave good lectures. The class is pretty test heavy but if you pay attention to the lectures then you will be fine. He doesn't help much when it comes to lecture questions.
We love Nathan!! He's one of the best math professors at UK. He's super thorough in his lectures even though attendance mandatory he still advises you to attend. He always posts his office hrs after every lecture and sometime drops by The Mathskeller to help.
ma123 is definitely a course i had to put the work in, even with how of a great of a professor he is. he explains the material in an easy way to understand a scary concept. depending on what semester you have him, lectures can be mandatory (recitation is required regardless).
Understanding. Lets you drop 2 quizzes at the end of the semester. Wants you to do good.
He is an okay professor. I didn't mind him, but I can understand how some people don't like him. He is unenergetic and talks very monotone. He isn't mean, but can make some rude comments if he has to constantly repeat himself on instructions he DID make clear. He uses iClicker for attendance that does cost money. He wasn't a bad prof.
Makes the material super easy to understand. Can be helpful, but typically comes with sarcasm. Tends to have an attitude with anyone and everyone. Lowkey disrespectful to students. Great teacher nonetheless.
Professor Druvienga while an incredible teacher sometimes seemed like he didn't want to teach, at certain times he would end class just because halfway through a lesson, sometimes making it difficult to finish homework's, still an amazing professor and gave every student the chance to succeed.
Solid choice. He has a low tolerance for nonsensical questions (ex. things that are on syllabus or other info that is readily available) but that is understandable given how many students he teaches. He is a great lecturer and the notes are very similar to quizzes and homework. He is not the friendliest, but he is understanding. Take him!
He would come in to class and say he was tired from his kid and cancel class. This went on many times. It made it hard to learn.
Don't know how he has such a high rating. I'll say he does take pretty good notes, but that's about it. I guess he's changed over the years based on other reviews but the dude is just straight up annoyed at life. Consistently seems like you're making him mad if you ask a question. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you want to pass, go to lecture.
Very good professor but other ratings are correct he is a tad rude sometimes (though not really in a mean way if that makes sense). Is clear about what is expected and is fairly understanding. Unfortunately had a myriad of health issues that made the beginning of the semester extremely spotty, but picked up after first exam.
He was absolutely fantastic. if you show up and pay attention you should get a good grade. he was pretty witty and was also very understanding. attendance was only necessary on testing days.
He is one of the sweetest professors I've had. He really wants the best for his students and gives his best every day. Come to class and be a good student!
This is a pretty easy class, Druivenga is a caring guy and pretty funny. He makes this class stress free. He cancels class a decent amount so be ready for that. The grading system is a bit wacky but it's nice
He is interesting but very nice guy. He really cares about his students and wants them to do well. Definitely one of the better MA 109 teachers. He is very good at explaining his lessons making them quick and concise. He lets class out early at least once a week and on quiz days gives you 20 minutes to study and explains what is on the quiz. EASY!
Mr. Druivenga is a great professor. His lectures are helpful and informative. The class is really quiz-heavy. You get five chances to take each quiz and you only have to pass two of them, so this class is really easy. As long as you show up, do your work, and study, you'll do great with Druivenga.
Nathan is the best math teacher I have ever had. As someone who has struggled with math anxiety my whole life, he is was the most amazing teacher. I DO NOT recommend the other MA109 professors, everyone does better in his classes. I also suggest sitting at the front of his class and developing a relationship with him, it will go a long way!
He does not teach well and does NOT prepare well for the exams. He dismisses the lectures and leaves students clueless for their upcoming exams. i do NOT recommend him if you truly want to learn.
Great professor!
