Professor Franklin is a wonderful teacher. He's lectures were very interesting. He didn't give much homework. If you put forth effort you will pass. Some of the things you do discuss in class are heavy, but he goes over it thoroughly. If you like learning about Artificial Intelligence definitely take this class.
This Professor is seriously a genius. He has to be the best english teacher I have ever had. The topics we covered were very interesting and definitely made you think outside of the box. He is supportive of everyones questions and answers. Put for the effort and he will give you a good grade. LOVE Professor Nathan, I would take him again.
Nathan Franklin is one amazing professor! I took him for summer 2017 and that is a fast semester. He makes things as clear as possible, but any questions you may have you can email him and he responds quit fast. I sometimes wonder when he sleeps. haha. I loved him class and he pushed me out of my comfort zone. He is one of my favorite professor.
I took this class online over the summer and was worried about having a ton of work. This was not the case. He assigned a smaller amount of work which took time and thought. I truly enjoyed this class. He has a true passion for teaching and it shows. He is available through e mail for any question you might have. I Enjoyed Mr. Franklin's class!!!
Took this class over summer online and found it: Accessible- Easy to follow along - Reasonable work load for the time considering- Interesting topics for discussions. Can't say there was much I disliked about this class. 10/10 stars (:
Mr. Franklin is by far the best English teacher I've ever had. He's great at making the students understand his assignments. An easy grader and if there's anything you need he's very approachable and is there for you even if you just want to be heard. I believe that is anyone has to take an English class it should be his. I know I am. He's awesome!
Don't take this class if you clench your views on things tightly. He makes you write based off his own interpretation of the world which may be uncomfortable for some. Other than that he's funny cool guy with easy grading.
Omg Nathan is absolutely amazing! By far my favorite English teacher ever! He's very passionate about teaching and he makes you think outside the box and makes you challenge things to really get your mind working. He opened my eyes to art and other things that are easily overlooked in life. Nathan you're awesome!
Professor Franklin loves what he does and truly enjoys teaching. He is very passionate with his lectures. At first the concepts that he teaches are hard to grab onto, but every class gets easier. His class really makes you think outside the box. Overall I highly recommend any of his classes. I learned so much in his class! He is great!
Nathan is a down to earth kind of guy. He makes sure that everyone's opinion is respected and genuinely cares about his students. Although its an English class, he touches on topics involving philosophy and scientific theories. His lectures can be life changing if your open-minded. He is a really easy grader, funny and a super understanding person.
As a Badm student I took Engl because I had to. stumbled into Nathan's 101 class only to find out that is the best professor I've ever had. I loved his lectures so much that I took him again for 104. What you'll read and write will bend your brain a little but he is so supportive and encouraging to make you the best writer you can be
Very confusing subject matter. Chose this teacher based on good score here, but I hate this class. If you like philosophy and lots of bland reading, this class is for you.
Whatever You Do don't take him. This man is obsessed with Big Data and artificial intelligence and the concept of it ruining the human race. Save yourself the boredom of bland reading and philosophical lessons and take someone else! He also loves to give one word email responses signed sent by my iPhone.
He is not a difficult teacher at all, but he is just not my cup of tea. He never gave out a single essay, but there is plenty of classwork and groupwork. It's not really your normal english class, and most of the topics were very complex & unusual. Talks most of the class. Luckily, there were never any tests, but there was LOTS of reading & typing.
He's an amazing teacher. Everyone in our class really enjoyed the material and he is a caring person.
I took this class based on the good reviews Prof. Franklin had, but I was let down. Although he is very caring, his assignments tend to be a bit messy. DO NOT take his class online, especially if you need help understanding the subject. He's obsessed with Big Data and AI technology. The reading material tends to be a little too complex.
Great professor and person, not what I expected from an English class in a good way.
If I could select more tags I would. He helps when asked, his grading criteria is very straight forward. He is human and very understanding! His readings are tough at first but if you keep up enough and allow yourself an open mind, his lectures and readings are well understood. Make time for his online course! Procrastination your own failure.
Professor Franklin is a fantastic professor. He really cares about helping his students succeed. He puts a lot of interesting material into his class, his class will make you think.
The curriculum wasn't really appropriate for English 101. He focuses more on philosophy than English, which really makes no sense. If he wants to teach philosophy, he should do that. Be prepared to use a lot of your own interpretation, because that's pretty much all the class consists of, that and discussions. Really easy grader.
Super nice guy & I had an A when I dropped. I understand he is trying to communicate with students but some of the vernacular is inappropriate for a Professor. I dropped the class because his content was not ADA compliant and the lecture videos we were to write on did not have subtitles. Content is OUT THERE! Heavy AI & Philosophy -no interest!
Prof. Franklin is a cool dude. Always tries to make everything inspirational. Beware that this class will get you confused and make you say HUH? He will try to reduce as much homework as he can and will sometimes push back assignments. Overall cool teacher but weird lectures.(P.S) He gives everyone a B on their essay unless you go above and beyond.
His work does fall more under philosophy in a way and there is a lot of work and reading, but that was during the SUMMER term. We had to do a LEGO project along with a 7-10 page essay on a city, trauma, and AI. He replies really quick! He's really understanding and chill. Not sure how he works during other terms, but Summer wasn't that bad.
This has to be the worst course I've ever taken. He has unclear expectations for assignments and will grade harshly even when you put in your best work. His assignments are very strange and requires a lot of reading. He will give a far fetched and unclear prompt and then criticize you for not being specific enough. Is lenient with due dates though.
DO NOT TAKE!!!!!! This is the worst class I have ever taken. Its a philosophy class Mixed with Artificial Intelligence. He explains things as if youre a Harvard scholar and can understand all the complex topics he attempts to target (tough to understand) I shouldve dropped the class the second I read the syllabus. Save yourself the headaches
I don't understand why people say he makes you write off of his perception of life. He challenges you to critically think and question life unanswered questions, instead of being a sheep to history. He cares about his student and gets excited when you formulate your own conclusions about topics. (even if they don't coincide with his). 5 star prof
I took this class during summer. Prof Franklin was really nice, this class is challenging but hes not a tough grader. I got and 87. something; I asked for extra credit but he doesnt offer any, that was the only bummer :,( Overall, it was a good challenge I just wish I wouldve had the chance to bump up my grade to an A. Just do the best u can
N. Franklin should be teaching modern philosophy, not an English course required for a degree. His syllabus claims to push students to improve their writing and research skills. Every assignment is based on his philosophies and interests. He gives little to no instruction for improvement, instead just posting his interpretation of the assignment.
The second I read the syllabus, I knew this professor was going to be something else. I'm sure his in person classes are better, but taking his class online was weird. The assignments hardly made sense. The final was how to prevent project 2051 (Ghost in the Shell, 1995) from happening, using a fandom wiki page as reference. Never again.
His syllabus is scary, I almost opted out because of it, but I am so glad I didn't. His work mixes writing with philosophy and it forces you to critically think. If you attend his lectures it's an extremely easy, interesting class. The best professor I've ever had, he cares, encourages his students and is extremely openminded and understanding.
I enjoyed taking Professor Franklins class he had a unique approach to teaching that I enjoyed a lot! Assignments are pretty hard but overall great class
If I wanted to take a philosophy class I wouldn't have taken English 101. Franklin is hardcore into AI and the assignments reflect his interests. Grading was based on his interpretation of the assignment with little to no feedback on structure and grammar making it difficult to be able to "grow as a writer". I would not recommend this professor.
Professor Franklin is the best English professor out there. I learned so much in this class. He bases a lot of his coursework on philosophy, but if you can understand it, it's an automatic A.
I didn't even get past 3 days of this class because it didn't make any sense. My first assignment felt like a job interview and not what English 101 is all about. I really regret this teacher and thank god I dropped it early.
Ive barely started taking this class and Im already so lost. He uses a lot of philosophical words that I do not understand. I really am having a lot of trouble understanding the assignments, when I ask for help he makes me even more confused. If youre into Philosophy & AI then this is the English class for you, if youre not then dont take it.
Great professor, gives a good amount of work but pretty easy and he explains every assignment and helps if you need it.
He's a great professor (IF YOU LOVE PHILOSOPHY) but his work is HARD to understand. I did most of my work to the best of my ability and didn't use flattery or formal responses to any discussions, assignments, or writing. There was multiple times I wrote, "I didn't understand this assignment but.." and got full credit. Just be honest with your work.
More based on philosophy but such a nice professor helps if you need it. Lots of work but not hard if you attend the lectures since he explains his assignments well overall great class.
Professor Franklin uses philosophy to teach critical thinking in the same way one might teach music, first teaching you how to play a song before you learn any theory. You get to use philosophy from the start even without any previous knowledge of it. The class absolutely improved my critical thinking and it has been my favorite class to date.
Relies on students analyzing poorly explained philosophies and connecting them to each other. Claims to be flexible, but a single missing assignment meant an automatic D. Feedback on discussions were not helpful and consisted of many PARAGRAPHS of more concepts instead of constructive criticism. To him, overanalyzing insignificant ideas is GENIUS.
Nathan Franklin is not a very good or professional professor. I joined this class thinking this would be a basic English-101 course for my first year in college. He is teaching all philosophy and no English. His feedback and "constructive criticism" are not helpful at all and consist of lengthy paragraphs about his opinion about the assignment.
This is NOT your regular, easy class. His assignments are very philosophy heavy, so if you like that, you'll thrive. With this, a lot of the reading is so difficult to understand, it honestly takes a lot of time to get there. Even so, there's only 1-2 assignments a week and as long as you hit all of the requirements, you will get a good grade.
Almost all the reviews above are accurate. The class is philosophy heavy, but he breaks everything down in lectures so it's not complicated. He is very caring, but he expects you to think and write. IDK why people are surprised, this is a college English class. Overall this has been the most difficult and most rewarding class.
Professor Franklin did not teach one thing about English. His whole class is about his beliefs on philosophy. You will be docked down if you do not write his opinions on assignments. He assigns multiple assignments in one day that are extremely lengthy and strictly about philosophy. If you are looking for an Philosophy teacher then take him.
Professor Franklin is a nice guy, but if I wanted to take a philosophy course, I would have. Nothing about his class felt like an English but rather a philosophy course on AI. He gives a lot of homework, and most of it doesn't make sense. However, going to class has him explain each task and it becomes a bit easier.
I didn't expect this class to have so much Philosophy but that's not a bad thing. It's good to learn something different for a change. That being said, Mr. Nathan Franklin set up his class in a way that can be easily understood. spend the time to read the material, and answer the questions and you will get an A
I took him for critical thinking however I felt like I was in a philosophy course. The work was difficult and time-consuming but doable. If you have any questions he never directly answers them. Last minute he changed the final to something that has nothing to do with any of the previous work. When I asked for help I got none.
Overall, the course was good but heavily based on philosophy. Professor franklin did change the final essay last minute to something that was completely of topic and very hard to understand. He was nice and understanding but completely lost all professionalism at the end when I came to him for a question.
Great teacher, although he is heavy around AI and Philosophy in English he does try to make class really engaging by going through multiple topics (mostly a mix between AI and Philosophy) so you'll have to read a lot in order to get an idea of what he's trying to go with the discussion's he'll bring up. Overall, great teacher for engagement.
He's an interesting guy, that's the simplest way to describe him. I took both English 101 & 104 with him. He is a super easy grader -- do the work decently, & you'll get an A. His assignments are pretentious, confusing, & full of cryptic language that can be difficult to break down, but just suck it up & do it & he will give you an A for effort.
While it's not terribly hard to get good grades on his assignments, it is extremely difficult to understand them. All of the things Professor Franklin assigns use difficult to understand instructions & are very lengthy to read. Saw another post saying he uses "cryptic" language & I have to agree.
Not just a difficult class but a difficult teacher to try to get a hold of. A confusing syllabus from the get go and unclear assignments with long lectures that move so slow I was only able to pay attention when I turned up the speed to the highest it would let me. Also such a lack of individual feedback for how to do better. I should've withdrawn.
Although he emphasizes AI and Philosophy in English a lot, he also does a great job of making class interesting by going over multiple topics (primarily AI and Philosophy), so you will have to read a lot to get an idea of what he's trying to convey with the discussion. In general, a good teacher who engages the students.
Professor Franklin always gives clear feedback on assignments and isn't that tough of a grader. The topics covered in this class were interesting at least in my opinion and him accepting late work and offering extra credit is nice of him to do so, not every professor does this so I'd recommend taking him. If you put in the work you will get an A.
Unmotivated teacher.
Instructions were sometimes difficult to understand but overall a good teacher and class. Definitely need to put in the time and effort and you should pass. If you are unsure about something, ask! it definitely benefits you to ask because it makes you stand out and seem like you trying.
This professor is horrible at instructions for assignments. Many people in the class also agreed he wasn't clear with instruction of assignments.
Waste of 4months that ill never get back. Didn't learn anything at all. Long/unnecessary assignments/boring. Didn't follow syllabus. Felt like a pol. sci./soc. class. Takes his sweet time to email/message you back(days). 0/10. If I could go back in time I would have just waited another semester to take the class with an experienced professor. Lame
After years of community college classes, I have to say that Professor Franklin is my favorite. Yeah the assignments and prompts can be a bit cryptic and convoluted, you just have to slow down and read it a few times in order to unpack what he really wants you to do! Anyone who doesn't understand will probably need their hand held all through life.
Great professor! It's clear some people just don't want to put any effort into their education.
I had a great experience with professor Franklin. The class was a little difficult but when I had a question professor Franklin was always there when I needed him. Thank you for the wonderful semester Proffesor Franklin.
Franklin is a really awesome outgoing guy. He's relatable and kind. However, his teaching material and style is not traditional english and he is much more philisophical than I would've liked. He's very much into free thought and expression. Get ready to write paper after paper and analyze a ton of theories about technology.
If you are good at English and want to challenge yourself mentally then I would recommend this professor. I also took his English 104 class. He is very curt when responding so I wouldn't recommend asking him for help (go to the writing center). There is no way you will fail this class if you do all the work. Very lenient.
If you want to challenge yourself and spend a lot of time thinking then I recommend this professor. I enjoyed his class but I also didn't like it. I learned a lot from him but at times it was a bit much. This isn't a traditional English class - it was very philosophical. There is a lot of writing but no huge papers.
Professor Franklin is one of the best professors at VVC. His online class is very well organized and structured. He mostly teaches philosophy concepts, but I recommend the student who is taking or planning to take his class take the time to slow down and try to comprehend his lectures
Get ready to do a lot of writing, tough grader, if you don't understand assignment he will give you zero points for your efforts. Also get ready to do some photography and some psychology. Gets annoyed when you don't understand something and will give you some sass on emails.
English 101 - Did not feel like a traditional English class - material heavily emphasized in philosophy. The assignments were difficult and very time-consuming; however, as long as you try to understand the material and show that you put effort into your work he will grade you fairly - don't recommend taking if full-time work & have over 9 units.
At first, this class was overwhelming but it started to get easier overtime. The essays were time consuming but I feel like I can write a lot better now. This English class was more about philosophy and he was very lenient with grading assignments.
This class was a great introduction to logic and truth. He perfectly ties in the current status of AI to long standing debates and philosophical questions.
I took Nathan Franklin's summer English 101 course online and received an A. Professor Franklin gives very few assignments about 2-3 assignments a week that are very easy. His assignments are straightforward and as long as you do the work you'll get a good score. He is also fast at answering messages on Canvas.
Professor Franklin was an amazing teacher. This class is not your stereotypical English class and it focuses a lot more of philosophical thinking vs. writing. I only wish he gave more personalized feedback per assignment, but it was fun! It starts off feeling like a lot but it stabilizes itself quickly, just make sure to keep up.
Overall, pretty interesting. I took the summer 8 wk course, it was a little heavy on work some weeks. Keep an open mind, try to immerse yourself in the material, and hit all min. word requirements to get an A. Easy grader & gave a lot of room for interpretation in assignments. I would recommend this course over Fr****v's 104 if you have the choice!
talks about his ex wife a little too much :/ nice professor though!
Very philosophical topics for us to read and write about: tourism, music, anamorphosis, etc. He's a fair and generous grader. For online class, he set deadlines for Friday and would not allow us to work on the next assignment until Monday, so we had the weekend off :) the 1st n 2nd week is rough, but after that, only 1 - 2 assignments per week.
talked about his ex-wife too much, couldn't follow with his work and lectures take forever with a lot of downtime.
He's very laid back and casual. The class is very discussion-based, and participation is important in the class.
Seemed well at first but basically chatgpt is the teacher and not him if you have any questions on assignments he tells you to ask ChatGPT for any clarification on assignments and he gives poor instructions. Good luck man I hated this class
Asked for an extension on an assignment due to a family emergency. He ignored that message until the end of the semester. One assignment I submitted through Google Docs and because he had trouble accessing it, I received a 0. I asked to re-submit using Word and he lectured me instead with sarcasm.
He teaches more philosophical subjects in writing, a lot of stuff I haven't heard of. His class was a lot and took a LOT of time but as long as you submit your work on time, I'm sure you'll get an A.
This prof is GREAT, he is clear with expectations and gives great feedback. Assignments were fun and easy to understand. Youll be fine if you turn in each assignment
The professor was nice. I just think it was his course work that was an issue for me. I felt like I was taking a physiology or something to do with theories. It didn't feel like an English class due to his theories. His work for English 101 is very similar to the work he gives to his higher English classes.
The course was unique & highly stimulating if you have an interest in philosophy. The material is complex & takes effort to decipher, but proved interesting. This course challenged me & I'm better for taking it. The main responsibility in this class is to gain an understanding of the material & then find its correlation to the other readings.
Professor Franklin is an engaging and inspiring English 101 instructor. His unique style blends art, literature, and theory, pushing students to think critically and write analytically. Fair grading, great feedback—just read, participate, and pay attention to details to thrive.
If you want an AI 101 class, this is the right class for you. The whole curriculum is based around AI and writing.
The class is easy to pass if you put in the work. I found myself not understanding at times. This was a huge eye opener on AI hallucinations and finding timestamps proved it. It can seem like a lot at first and you need to read the assignment before listening to the videos so you can take notes. Generous Grader as long as you put 2-3 hrs a week.
Lots of reading and homework but overall he cares most about turning in the assignments and showing effort was overwhelming at first but he allows us to use ai to help
