This is one of the hardest undergrad. professors you could ever take but one of the most knowledgable. If you like to learn and have a passion in politics TAKE THIS CLASS, PLEASE, although I feel everyone should be required to take it if they're American
This professor has a passion for politics. If you are the same, take his class. He has a way of making the topic engaging, and I hate to miss his class. Makes a point to acknowlege all of his students, I really have learned a lot.
nice guy..impossibly hard class.
This class was ridiculous. The exams were impossible and the review sessions were a joke. Although he is a nice guy, he doesn't make a vey good teacher. Avoid taking him unless you are a PSC major.
Great teacher!!! PSC 121 is a class that takes alot of work but is understandable and has alot of applications. As long as you understand the concepts taught in this class and can relate them to real life you will do gre
Very tough teacher, but he has a wealth of knowledge on the subject matter. I came away with a well-earned B, but it wasn't easy. Great professor to learn American history. If you don't learn; it will be tough to pass.
This guy knows his stuff and he forces you to think and apply the concepts in the class--if you don't want to think (or if you're not capable of it)don't take his class.
he's not interested in helping you at all. the exams were impossible. i regret taking his class.
One of the best professors i've had yet. Tests are very very hard, but at least i got something out of it. Class is crucial for anyone interested in politics.
A very nice man, and he knows a lot about his field. Interesting class also. However, study guides in no way reflect the tests, and information in class not really covered on exams. I made my worst grade of the semester in this class. A fun class to take if you're interested in the logics of govt.
He is completely unorganized, and his class is insanely hard! Nothing on the study guide is on the test, and he asks rediculous questions like "how is our burreaucracy not like McDonald's?" I hate his class, and even though we got to pick our exam, it wan't worth it at all! Don't take his class!
Great teacher. He knows the subject well and made me even more interested in politics than I already was. Being prepared for class is essential, but if you're willing to do the work, you will not be disappointed.
A very nice guy, but a flounder of a teacher. Absolutely no feedback on difficulty until the midterm. Class discussion follows no real path. I could have read the textbook for 50 minutes a day and gotten a better understanding of the subject. Expect to learn the subject from your textbook because classes won't cover anything useful.
He is a nice guy, but the tests are hard. His tests look to see if you really know the subject, not just the text book.
Nice Guy but he dosn't really follow any real path while teaching. His test are hard essay there is only 3 and they are very difficult never really knowing what will be on them. I didn't learn anything in his class this semester, and reallhy did not enjoy it at all...if you can avoid him..do.
Test are hard, difficult multiple choice and essay. Classes are unproductive, discussions are lead on tangents constantly. He will arrive to class late, will get off topic, then want to keep you over time to finish discussion. Not recommended unless you like Simpson and Star Trek quotes. A unique sense of humor.
Lecture-based class; tests are hard and there's not really a way to study for them. Extremely helpful and easily approachable outside of class. Prepares you well for graduate school.
Class discussion were not always clear. Tests are nearly impossible to prepare for, it's best to just read your notes. He never refers to the text, but reading it sometimes clarifys the material. Three tests counts for your entire grade, hardest class i've ever taken. I passed with a C but pulled (actual) 9 hour study sessions for each test.
Test are impossible and there is no real way to study for them. Lecture based class...really hard...just don't do it...if you don't have to
His test are very difficult however, if you take good notes and read the text book you should do well. I started with a "D" on the first test and made my way up to a "B" and made a 100% on the final. He is a great teacher who wants to make sure you understand the material so he will go out of his way to make sure that happens.
Griffith made goverment very interesting. It was a hard class but well worth it. He makes sure that you can apply what you've learned on the tests and not just spit out memorized answers. The books are great and further explain his lectures. I emailed him every time I had a question and it made everything clearer. Funny too!
Nathan is a really nice guy but unless you want to lower your GPA...don't take him.
He was a nice guy and the class seemed easy until the first test..which was the day after the last day to drop classes. The lectures and the study guides don't help. DON'T TAKE
I took this class because I thought it would be fun with the upcoming presidential race. I am an all A-B student, never scored worse in a class at all, ever! Until this class, and I am barely passing with a D. The class is extremely hard, and I don't recommend you take it unless it is required. Nice enough teacher but there goes my GPA
Funny, clear and managed to fill the entire class time on a subject that was totally dumb, strategic thinking. It seems like his political science classes are hard, but on the midterm for my seminar class I got a B and I never studied for the test.
Somehow managed to make a 4 hour night class interesting. Really isn't that hard- just make sure you understand the concepts instead of trying to memorize the book. You have to think instead of spitting back answers. I got an A without ever really studying. Very entertaining and nice guy! Also, very willing to help and answer questions.
He is the worst teacher that I have had at Belmont. His is very easily distracted during lecture and makes comments about tv shows that most people dont watch. I had never made lower then a B my entire time at Belmont until his class. His grading and tests are VERY subjective..I think he enjoys making people feel stupid.
WARNING: He just got tenured. So run for your GPA's life! He is unreasonably hard. I have NEVER had a professor as horrendous as him. His class had no clear direction and he picks class favorites. Run Forrest, Run!
Very very difficult.
Dr. Griffith teaches a very hard, yet entertaining class. The goal of his class is for you to be able to apply the concepts taught, so you can't just memorize information. He's a really nice person, but you have to work hard. I've learned a lot from him.
do not take him. He is extremely hard and does not explain very well. he picks favorites
nathan griffith is one of the most influential professors i've had at my years at belmont. his classes are difficult, but completely doable. they force you to actually think, rather than memorize. I have so much respect for him.
He's a really great teacher. He's definitely challenging, but pushes you to think, not just memorize what your told. His class is one that you have to enter with an open mind that is willing to learn. It really influenced me as a person, not just a student. TAKE HIM! Maybe not PoliSci, I don't know, but his FYS class was awesome
Very nice guy, terrible professor. Spends the vast majority of the class making clever jokes and seeking approval. Has almost no insight into ConLaw. Writing a hypo test takes a brilliant prof, and he simply isn't. Your GPA will suffer from his incomprehensible hypo exams where he is more concerned with humor than law.
He is the best teacher I had at Belmont. His tests are hard, but if you listen and take notes you'll know what to expect. He's SUPER helpful and willing to help you understand. I took as many classes with his as I could. Amazing prof!
Absolutely awful teacher. Never, ever, EVER take his class. Failed one of my very good friends on account of plagarism. She did NOT plagarise at all and he sabataged the whole thing. He if a very paranoid about cheating. She is now on probation for the next four years because of him- BEWARE!
Worst teacher i've ever had. His discussions in class are always off topic and he answers questions with questions- making everything confusing and useless information. He definitely picks favorites. His midterm was long essays and he grades harshly. i'm an A student..and his FYS killed my GPA of 4.0 Steer clear of him at all costs- seriously.
Devious professor who isn't helpful or clear in his classes. Do NOT ever take him. Both you and your GPA will regret it. No matter how hard you work, he ends up picking favorites and giving out grades based upon who he likes. His tests are easy if you can apply what you know to the books, but it's a terrible FYS.. never take him. He is very unfair.
If you enjoy bad humor, misleading class discussions, favoritism, being bored and confused,an FYS that is a waste of time, and having you GPA suffer tremendously, then take this class. If you take his FYS or any Political Science class you will regret it until the day you graduate. terrible teacher who is contradictory and legit insane. DONT DO IT.
Worst decision of my life to pick an fys that sounded like it could be interesting. it was hard and i did more work in it than any other class. this class is extremely stressful, and if you don't understand te books you're screwed. Do yourself a favor and listen to me when i say NEVER TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!
He's a stubborn political scientist. Enough said.
Always unprepared for class but expects the students to be over-prepared. Tells awful jokes all class, tests are completely impossible and he does not read the material he tests on. He is an awful teacher who is completely oblivious to his own ineptitude. Taking his class is like giving your GPA the bubonic plague on purpose.
Worst professor I've ever had in my college career! Always unprepared, doesn't give exam reviews, won't tell you whats on the exams. For your own sanity, do NOT take Nathan Griffith. This man needs to be fired as he knows nothing about the politics of the EU.
terrible person&overall a terrible teacher. if you take him, i wouldn't do anything but laugh at his stupid jokes. if you don't, he won't like you then he will just give you the grade he wants to give rather than the grade you might have actually earned. steer clear of him if it's possible. your GPA will thank you.
The very very worst teacher ever! Trust me and all the others who are warning you now! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF!!!! Don't do it! Just don't!, for all the same reasons all the other victims of this incompetent teacher. If you want to like school stay away from Griffith. Uni-bomber smart=Uni-bomber craizie!!!!
Worst decision I made was taking First Year Seminar from Griffith. Unclear, unprepared, rambles, picks favorites. First B I've made in my entire life. He doesn't care how you do, he just wants to beat his ridiculously useless ideas into your head. Don't take any of his classes if possible.
I've had him 3 times now. Honestly, these reviews are too harsh. He means well and doesn't want you to fail. He wants you to learn. You don't need a study guide for his exams, as long as you do the readings and summaries. The way his classes are set up is discussion based. As long as you do your work and participate it class, you will be ok.
Absolutely awful. To all the incoming freshmen- He is not conventional and his discussion based class is extremely off topic (not in an interesting way) and it's just plain confusing. Political science/FYS with him was a waste of time. No amount of sucking up to him will get you an A. Avoid him!
I've had Griffith two times now and I can honestly say I've learned more from his class than most other classes. It's harder but honestly it's college and the point is to learn. He's an awesome person all around... pretty funny, too!
Dr. G is a sweetheart. He makes a lot of silly jokes but people need to lighten up. He's really trying and I know he loves the subject. However, he does not teach for the student. He expects you to think in a certain way, and unfortunately not all people have the ability to analyze things the way he wants you to. Give him a chance, but study!
Honestly, I dont understand why there are so many bad reviews. Dr. Griffith is a goofball. Yeah, his classes are hard, but you learn so much from him and he makes it interesting so its definitely worth the effort. Id recommend him for anyone interested in learning more about political science.
Dr. Griffith is very hard to please. His grading is pretty rough in my opinion, and it was very hard for a lot of people in my class to make good grades. He has a dry sense of humor as well, so be prepared to hear him tell a joke and no one laughs.
Avoid this link w/ Gen Chem 2 at all possible. The class itself is tolerable, though Dr. Griffith's humor is sparse and awkward at times. Academically, this class will turn your GPA into a battle-hardened one, if it survives the likely plummet. The tests are a guessing game, with few easy questions, and the class is a hassle. Participation is key!
The linked class is not something I would recommend taking. It is very hard to actually get a good grade in the class, and Dr. Griffith expects far too much. The tests are complete guessing games and the essays are graded on how well your opinion matches him. I would never recommend this class to anyone. Stay away from it!
I took this class as a link with Gen Chem 2, and being a chem major/poly sci minor I thought I would love the combo; I was wrong. It seemed almost impossible to get a decent grade in the class and his political ideology drove the class discussions (more talk of Al Gore than actual policy) . All-in-all avoid this class and Dr.Griffith at all costs!
Hardest class I've ever taken. Long readings assigned every class; lectures are very unclear and often veer off topic, making them even more confusing. Tests always include a long essay, one test was completely essay. Do not take this class, especially if you do not like reading and writing.
Seriously the worst. He's an okay guy. I feel a little bad for him. But do not take him ever. Literally ever. I have an A in every single class other than this one. I'm barely hanging on to a D. He will ruin your GPA. His tests don't make sense and neither does anything that comes out of his mouth. I want to sob every time i have to come to class
He thinks he is funny but he is not. He is just annoying. He does not teach, he just voices his opinion.
Do NOT sign up to take American Government with Nathan Griffith. Even if you think you did well enough in high school that you should be fine, DON'T DO IT. He digresses from the topic every five seconds so we are always behind on learning. He also wrote a book that is our textbook and main source of learning and fails to explain things thoroughly.
Nathan Griffith is one of the coolest professors just to have a conversation with. He is very funny and easy to get along with. However, his instruction style is very poor. He gave little to no instruction as far as expectations for papers and was very disorganized. We once had 2 days to write a paper and got it back 2 months later.
If you take this class you will absolutely hate yourself for it the rest of the semester. All he does is rant about his political views and veer off topic the entire lecture. If you don't agree with what he says, you are murdering your grade in his class. Do everything you can to avoid this professor, your gpa will thank you later.
I'm a politics major, and I can understand where some people come from on their low scores. Honestly he doesn't teach like some professors do. He doesn't hold your hand and expects you to have your own opinions. When you take his class if you don't dismiss him; he'll make you want to succeed. Def could work on some of his jokes though...
Dr. Griffith is a professor who seriously needs to reevaluate his teaching style. Although I enjoy being able to discuss what we learned in our reading. It is honestly unacceptable to have the students essentially be the teachers for the most of the class. Dr. Griffith is funny, intelligent, and knowledgeable. But he just isn't a good professor.
Dr. Griffith is very passionate about teaching. He is a great professor, but the class itself (Comparative Politics) was awful. This class only re-affirmed my decision to change my major. There is a lot of reading and you have to write a one page paper for each class. I liked Dr. Griffith, but the class was dreadful.
Took methods. Deep down hes probably a nice person. But he is a HORRIBLE teacher. Is not helpful at all. Doesnt give good feedback. And is condescending af. You basically have to teach yourself. His classes are the hardest classes Ive ever had to take and he does not make it fun or easier on you. Pray for your GPA. Avoid at all costs.
If you participate and engage, you're going to do well and even recieve some extra attention afar as feedback goes. There is A LOT of reading! A lot of it is really confusing. Write your questions down--give them to him he will help. Let yourself learn, because there is no way you won't. Dr. G made philosophy NOT miserable. He's great!
Dr. Nathan Griffith is hands down one of the best seminar professors i could have ever hoped for. To be clear, he actually expects you to engage your mind and be willing to discuss concepts from the course. Most of the negative reviews on this page clearly come from students unwilling to put in even basic effort. He taught me to truly think. 10/10
I disagree w/ most reviews here. He is very fun, helpful, & always willing to stay and explain anything youre struggling with. Yes, he expects you to do the readings & to make an effort, so if you arent willing to actually learn, hes not the professor for you. I find his teaching style to be very valuable for the real world. Hes great.
Professor Griffith has a good heart, but really needs to reevaluate his teaching techniques. Students are expected to teach themselves everything, which is okay as this is college, but he never give lectures that comprehensively review course content. His class needs more structure, and he needs to cover reading material for review in class.
Do not take this class. It is so much work, and you are left alone with no help to teach yourself everything.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. you will ruin your GPA and get no help
He means well, and is a good person, but simply not a good teacher. I think he is burnt out and just needs to find a job he enjoys more.
I took Constitutional Law I and this reaffirmed my decision to change my major and not attend law school. The class was hardly structured and Dr. Griffith rarely stayed on topic for more than 15 minutes. He didn't explain how to do many of the assignments and his exams were extremely challenging.
He's literally the worst. I have taken so many classes with him (NOT by choice) and I need to tell all future students DO NOT TAKE GRIFFITH. He will RUIN your GPA. He sucks. All he does is talk talk talk and never teaches and he needs to do something else with his life. He gives you TERRIBLY constructed exams that are worth SO MUCH of your grade.
Yikes. Dr. Griffith could not focus his lectures on the topic of the class and did not guide learning well. Often I would do the readings and go to class just to spend the whole time talking about something completely unrelated. The only things in the gradebook are the midterm, final, and two essays. Try and avoid his class if you can.
Dr. Griffith is really quite great. His classes are hard and he makes you work for your grade, but he truly cares about his students. His classes are t definitely worth the effort. If you put in the work and then you'll be okay. He is super knowledgeable and has great experiences/stories. Will definitely take him again. it.
He is nice but a bit more difficult to understand sometimes. BUT if you can make the connections he provides and pay attention, you will genuinely learn from him through working through things out instead of just spitting out answers. Very application based. If you just want to keep a high GPA and want an easy grade ... maybe go to music business.
Griffith is a nice guy BUT his class was terrible/HARD. Nearly every student that had him as a professor failed. The lectures were not clear and the exercises per week made no sense/didn't go with the lecture. He claims he wants to help but doesn't explain anything if you meet with him outside of class. Your GPA will go down if you take this class.
Dr. Griffith is a great teacher, but you have to read the book thoroughly. If you aren't a great reader, this might not be the class for you because you have to apply concepts. If you can't apply the concept, you won't get it. The book is a hard and long read as well, so it takes a lot of time and effort to get through it.
Terrible professor. Talks too much about other things that even he forgets sometimes what he was trying to say. Very confusing lectures, and his book is super wordy for not reason as well. No study guides, because our notes are supposed to be sufficient while he doesn't give us proper information to even take notes over. Joke of a class.
if you take a class from him, good luck! my entire class had a group message and we took a poll of the class average for grades and it was a high D, low C. If you want to keep a good GPA avoid him at all costs. Kind man but as a professor he doesn't have any power points or structure to his class, his lectures do not help for the tests at all.
This class sucks- Comparative Politics. Do not take this class with Griffith! The midterm exam alone was completely traumatizing, he gave us no guidelines to prepare. I studied for 8 hours and probably failed. He makes you write weekly single spaced papers after reading 100 pages of a god awful boring book. Avoid this professor, I couldn't.
terrible
He is a great man but he knows way too much. He literally wrote the textbook for class so he knows if you know it or not. His tests are very hard and the textbook pages are long. He is a tough grader and does not curve. His class is lecture-based so participation helps. You definitely need to memorize the stuff in the book to do well.
Great prof, won't forget the commerce clause anytime soon. Case briefs almost every class that may make you look up how to drop out but they do get easier. Reading is necessary and helps, so do the lectures and he has some pretty solid jokes. He doesn't grade often which makes things hard but ask questions, participate, and read and you're gold.
It doesn't surprise me that there are so many negative reviews for this professor. You get out of his classes what you put into it. The tests require critical thinking skills and an in-depth understanding of the course material. Unfortunately too many people are looking for an easy A. I loved his class style, very casual discussions.
Awesome person and amazing professor, this course is very difficult naturally but he is willing to help if you're willing to ask. Just do the best you can.
If he likes you, he'll make time to meet with you outside of class. If he doesn't, good luck. Quite possibly the worst course of the major requirements. He's a dry lecturer and wonders why no one answers his questions. Provides minimal feedback on assignments and grades everything at the last possible second.
Griffith grades case briefs based on what he thinks is correct, rather than what is fact. It's fascinating how the legal question of a case can be given word for word in the opening on the opinion, yet he will claim that is not the question and alter the entire case to be something of what it is not. He makes everything abstract and vague.
Poor feedback and a lack of clear grading criteria. His syllabus will provide an objective rubric for grading, yet grades subjectively. Zero enthusiasm and seemed to hate the material he was teaching.
Dr. Griffith is an amazing professor and I would recommend that any student take his course. Doing the required reading and coursework is a must in his class. I have taken multiple courses with Dr. Griffith and I plan on taking more. If you do your work and give him the respect he deserves in class he will give you that same respect and enthusiasm.
Dr. G is an acquired taste. He's smart as hell. His humor is dry. His expectations are reasonable. Material is (mostly) interesting. He expects you to be prepared. If you aren't, you'll be lost. That's on you. I've taken him twice and learned a lot. Def. not for everybody but a solid choice.
Tough but fair! One of the best professors at Belmont.
As a political science student, I have taken many classes with Dr. Griffith. Though I think he is a great person and cares about his students, he is not the best professor. He is inaccessible outside (and inside) of class, he refuses to answer questions about expectations and requirements, and he does not grade anything... EVER.
griffith is the worst the political science department has to offer. everyone complains about him and he is a nightmare to deal with. his teaching methods are terrible and is classes are a constant struggle. he will ruin your gpa for fun. he singlehandedly made me regret choosing belmont. good luck, youll need it
Worst prof at Belmont. He doesn't really show students respect when they try to reach out for help. Avoid him at all costs.
Overall great guy and professor. His class was difficult, but worth it. There's a lot of reading homework, and you have to write a one-page single-spaced paper describing what you read. If you do the reading, homework, and you participate in class you'll be fine. Also- laugh at his jokes, you want him to like you.
operates a flipped class model of teaching - you teach yourself the content + submit assignment before coming to class AKA he doesn't teach in any meaningful way. classwork disproportionate to credit hours/other courses of the same level. Only class I've ever received lower than an A-. Tanked my GPA. Will not help. Made me regret choosing Belmont.
Made me regret choosing Belmont. I am not lazy. I am not unintelligent. I have the aptitude and did what I needed to do. Nevertheless, of the three times I have taken Nathan Griffith, I have gotten the worst grades of my academic career. You can only do well in his class if you lose all of yourself to become him. The man has too much honor.
Dr. G is tough but fair. The work can feel overwhelming at times, but I always learned so much. It was my favorite class. Do the reading and daily papers/briefs. If you feel you're having trouble, go to his office hours. He won't give you the answer, but he will guide you in a productive thought process, which will help you more in the long run.
Dr. Griffith is the best professor I had through my entire time at Belmont. He is brilliant, loves his students, and really loves what he does. His teaching style is not for everybody, but he is always accessible if you need extra guidance. I have taken multiple classes and went abroad with Dr. Griffith and I would recommend his classes 100%.
I am now enrolled in Griffith's class. If you are a student with a job outside of class, or any life outside of school do not take these courses. I have to have three jobs while attending school to survive, and the work is so rigorous and abundant that I drowned in the class. The semester is not over, but I will be failing the class. 0/10.
horrible professor but you can't avoid him if you're any sort of political science major. The reviews are correct, he wants you to become him. He is the worst the department has to offer in regards to actually learning anything from his teaching, he is harsh and condescending. You can tell he is knowledgable but shouldn't be a teacher. worst ive had
This was an experience. I won't sit here and be dramatic so I'll tell u straight up who I am as a student. I suck at tests, I am intimidated when it comes to participation, and I'm introverted. I walked out with a c. take good notes throughout the class and go to his office hours. if you try, you'll be okay.
Griffith's class is tough but engaging. The flipped model takes some adjusting, but using Unstuck ai and the textbook helps manage the workload. Definitely participate to earn his favor.
Yes, Dr. Griffith is an extremely difficult professor. BUT, you will learn more in his courses than you will at any other point in your degree. He is willing to meet in Office Hours constantly, provides great lectures. If you don't do good in his classes, it probably just means you aren't ready for a collegiate level of work.
He needs to be fired the fact he provided three tests no homework or study guide. Whole class is failing and he decides on the last day of class to end it because no one read his book. No test review like he wants the whole class to fail. Alot of his teaching is off topic majority class got low test scores and he doesn't seem concerned.
He is the devil
This professor shouldn't teach students. I've taken his classes several times and it seems that he wants students to hate being at Belmont. He is very scattered and unfocused during class and inaccessible when you need help outside of class. Beware and maybe choose a different major, because taking his classes will tank your gpa!
I took this for a social science credit because I have previously taken American Government and enjoyed it. I did not like this class. Only three tests for the semester is not fair to every learner. The lectures are wordy and honestly just all over the place. The focused concepts of the course are useless in the grand scheme of American government
Dr. G is a challenging but intellectually stimulating professor who cares about us actually learning, not just memorizing. Offers thoughtful feedback that helps you improve. Participation is key. Expectations are clear & fair. When you put in effort, you'll succeed. He is kind and passionate about teaching! Overall, Linda is a very nice woman.
yes he is hard but if u want to learn, his way is the best way. better then jelissen. i actually apply the stuff he taught into the world we live in, i feel more educated. he genuinely wants the best for his students through and through. you just have to do your part. biggest piece of advice: go to office hours!! he will help tons to see u succeed!
If you're looking for an easy social science credit this is DEFINITELY not the one to take. He's insanely knowledgeable but his lectures were all over the place and there were only 4 grades all semester. I'd say avoid taking unless you're some kind of poli sci major.
