Nathen is a really good teacher! He explains things very clearly and if you need help he WILL help you! He helped me out alot, I got a B is his class and Im not very good at math. Make sure you take lots of notes! If you really want to learn math take this guys class you will learn alot!!
This teacher seems like a nice guy but he does not properly prepare you for tests or online quizes. He explains things to us like we already know the material, and is flaberghasted when we dont have answers for him. Bad. The worst math teacher I have had at Whatcom.
Im very good at math and this teacher is horrible. He does not explain things well and it WAY too fast. Doesnt prepare you for the tests correctly and whats oon the tests often isnt what he went over in class. He will help you if you ask but alot of times hes just really rude if you ask something. I would NOT take him. Worse teacher ive had.
Great teacher. He explained things clearly, and would take the time make sure that everyone understood. I took the next level of math with a different teacher, but went back to my notes more from N. Hall, than I did with the current instructor
online quizzes are confusing and sometimes dont work, lots of material on the test isnt covered in class, talks in a sort of math language and is harder to understand then most. i'd look for someone different
Why be a teacher if you are going to assume that your students are completely familiar with the material? Went very quickly, talked to his students as if we should understand the concepts already. Nearly every student was still working by test cutoff. Provides office hours, but there are so many others there that it's hard to get your qs answered.
While a nice guy he was frustrating to say the least. he went quickly through the material and has NO time for mistakes. His grades are based mainly on tests which were impossible. I studied for the exam with old tests, the book, and class notes and still felt unprepared once I got to the actual exam. The questions were NOT even close to the same
The worst teacher ever. He is rude and unclear. His online quizzes were confusing and due the night before the test which had nothing to do to each other. His test were very hard. He did not go over a lot of material that was on the test. I failed his class and now taking a awesome math teacher and I am passing with A+. Do not take this teacher!
Very knowledagable. Easy to approach. Explains things clearly in multiple ways to ensure maximum comprehension for students. Goes through examples step by step. Always open to answering questions, and makes sure the answer makes sense. Fast paced class. Must be dedicated, and diligent to pass. Worth it though. Highly reccomend him!
Nathan is a very clear instructor who is willig to work with students outside of class even when he technically doesnt have office hours. He uses online quizes to esure you know the material prior to tests and you have the opportunity to review these tests or work similar problems.
He is a good teacher. He teaches math well, I learned it and thats ultimately what matters. Very easy to approach and helpful. You will learn math if you take it with him, each class I took, including CALC 151, I received an A. Also, has a tendency to be funny here and there. Good guy, good class, good teacher. Take Him.
Im sure he is a great guy, but he is not a great teacher. Unprofessional, arrogant and hard to follow. Doesnt prepare for important test material very well. Ask a question, and he responds rudely as if you should already know the material he is going over at that time. If your looking to truly "get" the material, do not take one of his classes.
I really enjoyed taking his class. I felt like he explained the material really clearly and when you asked a question he did his best to answer it. I absolutely recommend you to take his class.
Proff. Hall is a great resource if you have questions, although he does kind f drone on in a monotone like a stereotypical math teacher. It is easy to lose focus in class.
He's a great teacher, you have to put in work to get a good grade in his class. Very clear, he tends to use dry humor every so often. Overall he makes a difficult class much easier to take.
He obviously knows what he's talking about, but is not very helpful and slightly belittling. However, very attractive. Kind of looks like Peter Parker. I dig it. But anyway not a great teacher
Had to retake the class cause I failed the first time, friend also had to. All the tests had a time limit so you had to hurry through the test. Recommend him? If you can keep up and enjoy math.
He explains things clearly and he's very helpful.
He explains things clearly and he is very helpful!
supper hard and the class was a drag he is supper monotone and is not clear or helpful in class. i would not recommend him
I usually dont rate unless bad. I really liked Hall's ability to break things down and explain clearly. Average homework load (not like any phys class at WCC) and easy to follow. He explains things easier than book does so I got confused trying to look back at book. Just take good class notes and you'll be fine. Took all three 150 courses with A's
Best teacher eve. To make an A in this course. 1. Do homework. 2. Don't be a lazy moron. 3. Do mathwork and win.
HE explains things pretty clear, but his grading system sucks.
Difficult. I passed Math 98 with an A and struggled with Math 99 under this professor. He moved the class along WAY to quickly. His tests are confusing and his grading system is convoluted. I feel that, because he's an adjunct professor, he had no interest in doing anything beyond the bare minimum to help his students succeed. I do not recommend.
Ok clearly he is competent -- I must acknowledge that much. For me, he taught far too slowly at the beginning (although obviously some students benefit from it) and then sped things up at the end. Class is pretty hum-drum. If you need a month's worth of explanation on the unit circle, this is the class for you. If you like swift classes, it's not.
This is the second math class taken where the instructor has taught so poorly that more than 7 people in class failed . Mr. Hall's grading sucks, and his tests have nothing to do with the quizzes due the day before a test. As for reviews, why even come to class? I do not recommend him to anyone. He moves to fast and doesn't teach well at all.
Hall has been one of my best teachers at WCC. I believe he explains everything very well, goes over examples great. He asks if people understand before he moves on, so if someone doesn't get whats going on it is because they do not ask for clarification and let themselves fail. If i could i would take more math classes from him.
Worst math teacher at WCC. Avoid his class like the plague. Chances are you will have to retake.
Probs shouldnt have been in class cause it was way too easy. Prof was rude bcuz i already knew everything. Marked me down one whole point on a test for not circling an answer even when it was right. Tried talking to him about it and he didnt budge at all and just gave attitude. Not nice. Made my previous known subjects confusing.
This was the easiest class I have ever taken. Do the homework. Make A+ on test. So the hardest thing about this math class is doing the work. If you can't do the homework, why are you taking this class?
Such an easy class, such a horrible professor. Seriously avoid taking his class. He is rude, and makes a simple math problem a lot more confusing than it needs to be.
I took two classes from Nathan and was super happy. He's a pretty boring dude, but is super clear about what your supposed to learn. His lectures are basically just examples of the online quizzes he gives you, and the online quizzes are examples of the exams. It's all super clear and a pretty easy class.
I took Nathan for Calculus I. He was a good teacher, very clear, and an incredibly tough grader. This class was the biggest threat to my 4.0 that I have had at Whatcom. He explains everything well. Just be sure you do the optional homework. Tests are rough if you don't. Overall I would recommend.
Mr. Hall expects a lot of his students, but he really knows his subject and has good lectures. You didn't have to turn in the homework in my class, but if you don't do it, you probably will have a hard time on the exams. He's always willing to talk to students outside of class and give advice.
Fine enough person. However, he uses this obnoxious web app called WAMAP to issue Quizzes. You have to get syntax correct or it marks you wrong. Homework Q's don't match Quizzes, Quiz Q's don't match Exams. Textbook might as well be written in Japanese. Had to googleKhan Academy 90% of this class. Will not take another class with again. Avoid.
This class's wasn't really helpfull for me , the quizzes and test were hard
The quizzes are great. They are on WMAP and are untimed and questions can be retried until correct. He answers questions online promptly. The tests are hard, but the material is all covered in classes and homework. He is a great lecturer and explains all the steps taken very thoroughly. I had not taken a math class for 5 years and I got a 90%
Well, I'll admit, I struggle with Math. And I struggled with this class. He cares for details and actually explains why we're using this formula or this equation. But he can talk in Math lingo where I get a little lost. Not a huge fan of the online quizzes, which brought down my grade. Nice guy, though.
I had taken his class when it was my third quarter. He could clearly explain and interpret many problems about calculus, and he was willing to answer questions that his students asked. On the other hand, his class was a little bit boring because he seldom organized interesting group work which made students love math. Last, tests were very hard.
he was by far one of the worst teachers I've had. he wasn't engaging and was very rude to the students. he would stare at the board talking to himself and didn't explain things well. his tests were some of the hardest I've taken and I usually succeed in math. he seems to grade unfairly and too difficult.
Great guy, Great Mathematician(better than most teachers). However, probably one of the worst math teachers on campus. If you feel like spending an extra hour a day more than normal reteaching yourself what he was supposed to teach you. then take his class. He explains things too fast, and his tests are hard, expecting you to understand all concept
Nathan is an excellent mathematician, but not as good as teaching it to everyone. Personally I had an incredibly easy time, but not everyone liked his fast pace and incredibly scripted and prepared lectures. If you're generally good at math, you will love him, but if you aren't, you may have a tough time.
Great teacher but he does expect the students to understand the concept without explanations. If you want to spend lots of times on math, choose him. Working hard is the only way to get good grade in his class.
To me Nathan Hall is one of the best math teachers I have had! He comes to class prepared with notes, and stays on schedule very well. He also answers any kind of questions people have at the beginning of class (even for up to half the class period)! He talks and explains at a good pace and clearly. If you like math, you will like Nathan.
Very organized teacher and has nicely paced lectures everyday. The lectures can be long but they are clear and straight to the point, which complements my style of learning. He answers questions and goes over homework during class time to make sure you know the problems. Uses WAMAP.
Attend his classes, and complete assigned homework and you will surely pass. Uses a lot of math terms, which wasn't an issue for me. Really organized. Lots of tests and online quizzes. Fairly good lectures. Had to work fairly hard for his class because missed a few classes. He goes at a fast pace, so you have to be ready to keep up.
Get ready to spend a lot of time out of class trying figure out what you were supposed to learn in class. He also makes you do online quizzes that take some time. Very lecture heavy. You come into class, sit down, and right when he walks in, BOOM. Starts talking right away.
Not Great. He is not very clear in class so I spent a lot of time outside of class trying to figure out what he "taught" us Gives noe extra credit and no opportunities to make up tests or do test corrections. Pick a different teacher. He is also a bit monotone, can be hard to pay attention.
I have Nathan for calc2 and 3, he is always prepared for every class. His tests are not that difficult if you do the homework every day because sometimes the exam questions are exactly like the homework. He is even open for questions about anything (quiz, hw etc.) at the beginning of class and really nice to talk to. I would take him again
This was my first college course in 7+ years, I expected to despise going back to school but this class was a great way for me to ease back into it! I put in a lot of time and did all the homework so the quizzes and exams were easy. Just keep on schedule and you'll be fine. I wish he taught more online courses! Love the format, easy to understand.
It may seem like a simple class, but just know Wa-map is used for this class as well, no canvas, he chooses the grade by 2 options, you mostly just go to class, take notes, and ask ?'s if needed, and homework is opt, but is very recommended. I say if you want a class to really learn to pass, I suggest taking a different one to avoid lectures
This guy is just okay, the class is him talking the whole time really and then a lot of outside of class work, he doesn't use canvas which is frustrating if you're taking multiple classes that do, there are time-consuming quizzes online that are mostly straightforward, however, the word problems that he wrote can be worded very poorly.
If you don't like lectures, then I would go with a different professor. Personally, I liked his teaching style, because he went through a lot of example problems. I never did the homework, even though he assigns a lot of it, and I got a B-.
When he is teaching he doesnt let you solve the examples that he gives out and also doesnt give close examples of what is going to be on the exam which I dont like because sometimes the problem that is in the exam we didnt learn really well because didnt have practice on it.
Homework not graded, but that's not unusual. Online quizzes through WAMAP, those were fairly easy. 3 tests plus a 2-day final, also fairly easy. Lectures were easy to follow, and a good pace for note taking.
Nathan consistently makes sure that we are ready for homework assignments, quizzes, and exams. He answers any and all clarifying questions with eloquence and patience. His intelligent sense of humor and preparedness for class make for a fun learning experience every day. It is evident to me that Nathan genuinely cares about his students success.
If you learn through examples, then this is your guy. At the beginning of class everyday we can write questions on the board and he'll go through a step by step process. We have weekly online quizzes through wamap, but they are retakable up to 100%. Beware, he is very monotone, but wants his students to succeed. He is very intelligent.
He is free to talk after class to discuss HW questions, but you can write hw questions that you find confusing on the white board at the beginning at the class.
Nathan's class was amazing. He is a very intelligent person and knows his content well. His class is lecture-based and each day he explains the concepts and goes over examples from each concept. He is a VERY fair grader and gives partial points for good work. Weekly online quizzes with a forum for questions. I would gladly take his class again.
Great professor, Lots of homework, tests are a little hard. He is very caring, stops lecture to give you the oppurtunity to ask questions about the material. Exams are high stakes, you are only graded for quizes and exams.
Nathan is the BEST math teacher I have ever had! He explains concepts super well, goes through examples clearly, and is always willing to stop and answer questions. If you make the effort to learn and understand he will make the effort to help you and he does it well! I would definitely take Nathan's class again!
He's a great prof. and I'm taking another class with him now. His classes are lecture heavy, but he's open to questions at all times. He also makes it so that he is available for office hours most days. Grades come from quizzes and exams, and homework isn't mandatory, however, I recommend doing it. Overall, he's great at teaching.
Absolutely love love love Nathan ! He is easily the best teacher I have had, especially for math. I had not passed calc the first time I took it and retook it with him and did so much better. He is super helpful, caring and doesnt make you feel stupid. He was always willing to work outside his office hours to help me almost everyday of the week !
This was an online course during covid, He created a weird grading scale, meaning my weekly forum posts that I missed half of dropped me to a C despite getting an A on every other homework, midterm, and final for. He created a weird grading system that means you couldnt get above a C if you missed the weekly forums, not standard grading scale.
Calculus is already difficult doing it online. He lets you know when you're wrong but doesn't assist you to find the proper solution. That being said his responses and comments on my midterm for example were kinda rude. But go for it take this professor and have fun teaching yourself calculus....
My online class with Nathan Hall was unique to other online classes I had taken. The grading system was odd and participating every week is very important. I never really heard much from him at all during the quarter. His feedback on my quizzes or forums was usually very short and wasn't particularly helpful, mostly just questioning my answer.
This was exactly what I expected from an online class: well organized; weekly forum posts; weekly tests. Nathan is easily accessible and responds quickly. The only thing I didn't like about the class was there weren't any lecture videos or any extra help for each of the weekly assignments. So be prepared to teach yourself everything.
He provides lots of videos to help and other outside resources but that is the only thing I like. He will poorly grade you on your forum post and not let you repost or improve it. His comments on midterms and finals were rude and it is also a very atypical type of final that makes it even more difficult to do well on. Do not recommend it.
The workload for this calc 1 was actually not bad at all. However, this teacher has the worst grading system ever. So there's 4 areas/ criteria if you get below 80% in a area your grade drops a whole letter grade. I chose to retake the class with a different teacher and noticed that many students from the Nathan's class were also retaking calc 1.
Lectures were basic youtube videos that were clearly extremely old and not made by himself, they also referenced a different textbook so it was difficult to find example problems similar to what was in the videos. Nathan was hard to reach through WAMAP, often his replies were short and did little to help, basically taught myself from the textbook.
This professor has a horrible grading scale, it is a 4 point criteria and if you fail to meet one of the 4 criteria your grade drops a whole letter. It is absolutely horrible, and he doesn't teach if you take this class online. He expects you to do so many homework problems, and assigns a lot of reading. His feedback is not helpful. DO NOT TAKE.
Horrible teacher, doesn't teach anything just uses old WAMAP videos. Horrible grading scale, and his feedback on assignments and Midterms are not helpful and just point out what you did wrong. Definitley would not recommend there is nothing to do to improve your grade.
Horrible teacher, would not recommend. Do not expect a good teacher, expect having to read the textbook and learn everything yourself. Horrible grading scale, no way to make up points, never taking another class from him again.
Faced with a family crisis, I missed a crucial assignment deadline. Despite highlighting my consistent high performance and explaining my circumstances to Prof. Hall, any *discussion* about making up the assignment was refused. Shocked that I had to plead for flexibility, given the sensitivity of my situation, I opted to drop the class.
Don't recommend taking an online course from him. Based on the random 5s on here, Idk if those are fillers or if he is much better in person. Online, expect to teach yourself the class. Does not do his own lecture videos, videos are posted from a different prof at WCC, made years ago. 4 grading categories. 80%+ in each or grade goes down a letter
Nathan Hall's online teaching lacks engagement and empathy. He provides minimal instruction, decent workload, strict deadlines, and inflexible grading. Feels very disrespectful, unsupported, and isolated in his class. Along with reporting me for missing turning in work when I fell ill, turned it in not even two days late for a reduced grade.
Nathan is awful. I read the reviews before taking the class and did not listen. He was super unsupportive, his messages come off as rude. He doesn't grade anything besides midterm and final, and still doesn't accept late work. I got every single question right on the midterm and somehow still got 27/30 because he grades difficultly just to do it.
Professor Hall is a great online professor! He does not provide his own lecture content, but he provides tons of videos on similar problems. He actually explains problems you have issues with rather than just giving the answer so you can learn why the answer is that way. It's an online class, so be aware of the greater time commitment for learning.
I didn't enjoy his class, none of the content was his and he used yt vids which were posted a decade ago. Everything was pretty okay but the assignments had unreasonably hard questions that weren't in lectures. I dont recommend but if you do take it, message him for any qs you have even if it seems like he doesn't care. Be prepared to self study
At first, he was ok, his assignments weren't hard and the workload wasn't terrible. Then came the midterm. Part of the credit for each question was showing your work, which was understandable. On my midterm, I only got 1 question incorrect but somehow got a C on it. When I emailed him about it, he said I didn't do enough work (even though I did).
There's a lot to do in the class and I would encourage spending the time doing the assignments for practice; don't shirk of the homework/reading. Professor gives a lot of opportunity to work through problems, and the grading schema is fairly forgiving allowing for multiple attempts to learn. Note that chapter 7 felt the "toughest."
Midterm and final make up 50% of your grade. Each week usually has 2-3 assignments, a forum post, and videos are provided for notes. He uses another professors videos for his class material, he seems absent and robotic, and this was not a fun class. I understood most of the material but you pretty much have to teach yourself everything.
Great professor! Wants to help.
This class was the class to ruin my 4.0 GPA. I tried my hardest to advocate for myself to no avail. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. He teaches his entire course through WAMAP which is an incredibly outdated and difficult website to navigate. He probably just shows up for a paycheck, his class is optimized for his comfort over student understanding.
