He is a good teacher explains it untill you get it. He understands that this is the last math class needed for none math majors and keeps it simple
Nate is awesome, he really makes sure that you come out of his classroom with the necessary knowledge to pass his quizzes and tests, plus the quizzes and tests are easy and he makes sure that the answers are not crazy. He is very funny, and very modern making his lectures fun. take him if you want to go into CALC with confidence!
A very cool and laid back teacher. He can be tough and fair and it somehow makes him even more respectable. He is the kind of teacher that is frank and very honest; if he is disappointed in the class' performance he'll let you know. It's refreshing. A great teacher with a unique style. I'd highly recommend him to anyone.
Nate was awesome, really made sure you knew the material and tried to get you all the help possible if you couldn't Very blunt, and really nice.
He a smart guy, he tries to explain everything as clear as possible it can get confusing at times. His test are really hard... So study a lot.
Love him to death..i remember the things he teaches, rather than most of my other teachers. definitely a memorable guy..wish i could take him home with me ;)
He is an amazing teacher he is strict but fair I loved him he haw a great teacher!
Mr Kurtz is THE teacher to take if you're a returning student. i hadn't taken math in over 3yrs and so my basics were very blur. he takes every student one-on-one, and step-by-step. always teachs new tricks that work. he's helpful, respectful, and kind. all he asks from you s to be on time, turn in your homeworks on due days, and ask for his help.
Nathe is somewhat special, he is so passionate about math he thinks everyone is going to be as passionate as him, he takes it way to seriously, He tries to scare students at the beginning of the course, by saying that only so and so % pass his class, and it can get annoying. Like just teach please! His test are really hard. Gives a break Man!
Mr. Kurtz was very helpful throughout the whole semester. The way he teaches makes everything easy and i strongly suggest you take his class because he tries everything he can to help you be successful.
awfull doesnt have any understanding
Nathan is clear on giving instructions. he puts the wording in ways for the students to undersatnd and its amazing. His test can throw you off but when he says study then study because it's no joke. But overall greta math teacher
Nathan is great! His class was a bit high paced, but his methods are so easy to remember you wouldn't even realize it. He does a really great job of breaking down the subject to an understandable level.
Out of all the teacher that i have ha for math, Kurtz is the only one that has cliked for me. His methods for this class is deffinitly what i needed to be successful for passing. And with his new methods of putting lecture notes online for that particular class was very helpfull for his tests. And the best part was him going step by step in the work
He took a simple math and made it more complicated than it had to be. he is very thorough in his lecture time and mymathlab helps alot but he's teaching a jr college at a university level
Nate wants his students to learn, and learn you will. Tough class, but Nate's teaching style is desired using a digital writing pad. The class will have white board days where the class will be on the white boards practicing in groups. Nate is tough but helpful, and if you aren't ready to make the class a priority in your semester; best of wishes.
Nate was awesome. He is a great teacher. I love his teaching style. He makes it easy to understand math. I like the fact that he is very energetic and fun.
not a good prof
The test in this class are difficult to finish in the time allotted. He does not allow graphing calculators on tests like most professors do. Would not take him unless you want to be tested on how fast you can complete math problems rather than if you know the material or not.
Awesome teacher! He can seem kind of intense and intimidating at first but he is super helpful! Very clear on the teaching and will help you outside of class. As long as you do the homework and study your notes from class, the quizzes are easy! Would highly recommend him!
Great professor whose interest is for the student to learn. He seems pretty intimidating at first, but he only does that to prepare you and make sure you get a good grade. As in every class, you have to put an effort to do the homework and study for the tests. Um, did I say he's hot?
Very good professor. His tests may be difficult and the homework can get annoying because you use MyMathLab, but you can't complain because he explains everything well. You basically get the grade you deserve depending how much you study.
Unsure what to say. I failed this class and I'm not sure if it's mostly my fault or his. My fault, for taking this class along with a Biology class which were both only one month long. His fault, I think, for giving way too much stuff to do in one month. So overall I'm thinking he would be an ok teacher to take in a class setting, just not online.
He is not a very good teacher, he moves very quickly and expects too much during the small amount of time. unless you like teaching yourself everything i don't suggest taking his class.
This prof has no problem cussing at a student in front of class if he/she has incorrectly solved a problem on the board. There is not enough time to finish tests. Makes people feel stupid if they are not fast at solving even though the person is able to solve the problem. Dropped after two weeks, sucks he still got paid!
Awesome teacher. Makes taking notes so easy! Its not the easiest but you have to just dedicate yourself to do the homework and study outside of class just like you would do in any other course! Great professor!! Very honest, and jokes around a lot. if you are easily offended then don't take his course.
He is an excellent math teacher. He goes over every step slowly and explains what is happening very well. He will go above and beyond to help you learn. His "quizes" are brutally difficult. 6 test-length "quizes", midterm, and final. No graphing calculators allowed. Take his class if you want to greatly improve your math skills and push yourself.
Mr. Kurtz is a great professor, his tests are challenging but it's because he wants to make sure you understand the material so you can succeed. If you put forth the effort he will reward you. I had a low D for the first half of the class but the second half I improved greatly and finished with a 79% which he graciously rounded to a B.
Honestly, this is the best math teacher I've ever had. Even though I'm only halfway through the semester, it has gone really well. His teaching style really resonates with me. Math isn't my strong point, but he uses auditory, visual, and hands on teaching methods that make the content stick. Love it.
Math 142 is cake! Chapter 11 is the only one you might have trouble with. Professor Nate is a legit teacher though! He actually teaches instead of just reading a powerpoint presentation. Just show up and do the mymath lab homework and you'll be fine. For the summer course I spent about an hour a day on homework four days a week.
Great teacher, understands what we as students want and need to know. Kurtz is blunt, but he gets everyone through the class with a good understanding. allows lots of questions. LOTS OF NOTES which are for a grade.
would be an easy A type of online class but assignments are VERY, VERY, VERY time-consuming!!!!!! def. have chances to get A since quizzes are unlimited but with all the assignments to do, youll burn yourself out before you'll even want to redo the quiz for a 100%. tests are proctored on-campus. wont take him again
Nate was one of the best professors I've ever had. As a nursing major, he specifies that what he teaches will be extremely helpful for me. Notes are taken in color coordination and he is super helpful when helping you understand the material. Super blunt but teaches you what you need to know and not the useless crap! Highly recommend taking!!
By far the best math professor I have ever had! Math isn't my thing. Amazing, descriptive lectures & useful notes. Funny & caring towards students. Very straight up, lets you know what you really need to study. Gives real world examples. Offers extra credit. Easy to talk to. Youthful and energetic. You must do your part and study your butt off!
Kurtz, is a great professor. You will learn how to use the practical math skills, and learn to do math hands on. I was very discouraged when i started class because I never cared for this subject, but he taught it well, and very thoroughly. There is no way you wont learn; unless you truly don't care to show up, or do your homework.
use the MyMathLab for online course and Professor Kurtz is good considering I took an online course. He responded to my emails almost immediately, if not then within 24hours. Fair with your grade. gives you an opportunity to make up missed assignments at the end of the semester.
this guy is great! he is funny, but is clear on his grading and attendance policy. he uses my math lab for homework. he will let you know by the middle of semester. if you will pass or not. I recommend him if you have any trouble with math. he will help any way he can.
AVOID THIS TEACHER. Treats his students like they are elementary children, belittles them on most days, incredibly picky grader. If you don't show the tiniest piece of a single step, you'll lose most of your points on a test. I did the math, on one test I would've gotten a higher grade showing every bit of work and getting every answer wrong.
Most disrespectful & lazy teacher I've ever had poor quality class, I want my money back. He uses online since its "advanced" but he's really just a lazy professor. This class is basically online. The lectures& online homework are SO DIFFERENT so you will struggle for sure. he wont take time to modify homework makes u do problems u wont do on tests
Professor Kurtz is a strict teacher, but the type of strict that actually for once helps the student rather than just unnecessary . MyMathLab is REQUIRED, but the homework is customized to each student which is so helpful and awesome. I would definitely take a class with him again. Go to class, but as long as you talk with him he's chill.
Barely teaches and will do his best to lower your exam scores. Late on giving out papers to class and deflects situation by blaming other things. homework is not customized for you, and he knows it. finds his best way to teach minimally and will blame students for failure. Says his pass rate is about 12% but apparently its always the students.
The worst math class I have ever taken. The practice are no help. I feel like he doesn't want to take the time to actually make homework that will benefit our class. All the homework are online which are either no help or completely different from the exams.
The online homework is no help whatsoever. The tests are very difficult because they have nothing to do with the hw. The reviews are topical. Oh and you know that calculator you spent lots of money on? You won't be able to use it. Would avoid at all costs.
So this "teacher" already gives no help by making everything online to make it "easier" for "us" but five days before our final he tells the class he purposely will make this test the hardest and will make it long for a 2 hour exam. WHO DOES THAT. ALL YEAR WAS A WASTE AND NOW THIS. do not take. Save your money.
This class is very easy made difficult by a very horrible & lazy teacher. Don't take unless you want your time & money wasted on an online program. Does not help the class & only looks out for himself. Very rude & unprofessional since he cusses like a sailor. Worst math class I have ever taken in all my life. Final was made hard on purpose too.
Absolutely dont take. really bad class and teacher.
He is the worst math "teacher" i've had. Unorganized and unprepared. Gives a ton of unnecessary homework which just drags you down. Doesn't let you use a graphing calculator so you will have to be very careful with all your calculations. The tests aren't multiple choice, so you have to make sure you put in the answers 100% correctly or else.
Mr. Kurtz is an okay professor, he uses fill in the blank notes which only give 3 at best examples for the homework and test to study off. He uses MyMathLab for homework which is not really useful on some topics in the class. Also he is a bit unorganized with his notes & lectures; he put up a test review in canvas at 9pm the night before the test
Professor Kurtz was extremely helpful if you reach out to him. He also responds to emails quickly. Reviews are almost identical to exams so if you do well on the reviews, you'll most likely do well on exams. Not so much homework either since it's based on how much you understand the lesson.
I would not recommend taking any class with him. He requires us to print out notes and sometimes wont post them till the morning of class. He also posts answers really late on canvas. On top of it, he hardly responds to his emails like he says he "will".
Seems like a cool and funny guy outside of class. However, his math class is possibly the most boring class I have ever taken. There is homework almost every single day (online included), and his note packets are always too long so we are almost never able to finish learning in class. Hard class, tough grader, however he is great at explaining.
Constantly berates students to get their work done on time but will only upload notes (that are needed to help with homework and to prepare for tests) 5 minutes before class. The WebAssign work is completely different than what he actually tests on. Would not recommend taking his class.
Nate was chill .. not the worst professor ever like a lot of people say .. he was my first math teacher at GCc so I was new to the college life. He overall was cool and did assign online homework that could get tedious. Other than that he was funny cause he cussed and also did a lot of group work so it was helpful
Worst teacher ever! He's so full of himself! Makes everything more difficult than it has to be. Doesn't help at all! Doesn't take the time to teach you and help you understand. I wish I would've read the reviews before wasting my money and time. If i fail this class i will be set back another semester to graduate!
Mr. Kurtz was a very good teacher. I took the course online, so I didn't get much face to face time. He was available during office hours when I needed to see him, and was very cordial and supportive and didn't make me feel like I was asking stupid questions. I would definitely take him again.
He taught me how to color coordinate my notes, he makes math fun. possible to pass.
Great professor, if you are strong in math. If you aren't, or you are an older student re-entering school, this is the wrong teacher for you. Moves fast gives very little time to copy his notes. Shows once how to do something. Mind tap is a mediocre tool at best, the instructions aren't always good, so it you don't get it is class too bad.....
Just because he doesn't let you slack off doesn't mean he's a bad teacher, guys! I hated math in high school, but everything I used to struggle with makes perfect sense in his class. He explains things clearly and does the problems with you. If you still don't get it, speak up! He'll explain more. But you'd better show up and do the homework.
Mr. Kurtz has to be by far the best math teacher Ive taken. Math is not my favorite it best subject and he just makes this class easy to understand. He cares so much about his students and them passing. He has a lot of guidelines but they are all worth it to help you pass and understand the class. I recommend taking him! Hes very understanding.
Nate gives good lectures and the lectures are very beneficial to your studies. If you skip more than one class, learning the work will be challenging. If you are struggling, he will help you out with any questions you have. Make sure to copy everything he writes on the notes because that is what is going to help you on the homework and tests.
I graduated HS in 2001 and decided to go back to school for engineering. I absolutely loved Professor Kurtz's class and personality. If you're a lazy and irresponsible person who enjoys coasting by with no effort, don't bother. If you follow instructions, show up to class and do the work, you will be very successful in his class. Amazing teacher!
I had taken, Mr. Kurtz's MAT212 for my first time only to realize I did not like his incoherent teaching style, unorganized notes that would be posted right before class; and have very limited examples to comprehend the material. I recommend everyone to take Ms. Devenney for MAT212 she is enthusiastic, gives good note packets ** test questions
He knows the math, and explains it well. But he himself is very self absorbed and judgmental. Makes you feel bad if you dont know the material and is just rude to students. Theres about 3 hours of homework a day, you have to finish any notes and homework not completed by him in class along with online work. One mistake gets many points makes off.
He is available for help outside of class during office hours. However, he is condescending and his teaching style is abrasive. He'll answer your questions, but not without making you feel stupid for asking them. He's a fair grader, but miss a day and you wont catch up. His notes are never prepared, but expects yours to be. Ton of homework, too.
Hes awesome! Your fear of math will go away. If your used to slacking off don't bother taking him you wont pass. Hes pretty upfront about his expectations honestly they seem pretty easy just PAY ATTENTION, do homework, and study. That simple. He does online homework which is pretty helpful. His mean & sense of humor is actually pretty funny
Great Professor! He gives out good lectures and very understandable. His notes are very helpful. There is a lot of homework but he does a great job in preparing you for the exams.
He is one of my favorite math teachers. He is very understanding and keeps everything 100% real with his students. There were hard concepts but overall this class was pretty easy if you really try you can get an A. Graded on a few things but if you stay on top of things those grades will do you good. I recommend professor kurtz.
Took it twice, Can't afford: miss class, not get 100% notebook check, get lower than 65% on any test, 85% on webassign. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! Its the 2nd hardest math class. (Just everything you hate about math) GET SOMEONE WHO TOOK HIS CLASS OLD TEST! Great teacher for how hard and fast this course is. Pulls problems from extra practice & homework.
His class was the first I had to drop in my entire college experience. THERE IS SO MUCH HOMEWORK (3hrs/night) if you have a job it just does not seem feasible. He doesn't stop to ask you if you have questions. His assignments are through WebAssign (online) so you also better be tech savvy & thorough as a computer cant grade the same as a human.
If you are not prepared to teach yourself via WebAssign short videos, do not take this class. This is an online class but the interaction with the professor is almost zero. He is your 5th contact if you do not understand something. This is stated in the syllabus and the 1st-week quiz. Math is a tough online class but this class is set up to fail.
Nathan Kurtz has been one of my favorite professors. I took his class for my second semester my freshman year and it was not hard AT ALL. Although he is strict on attendance it is for your own good as you WILL struggle if you miss the class. The Grading Criteria is clear and as long as you do your work. You will pass no problem. 10/10. THANK YOU!
Taking an online course should not feel like pulling teeth. The amount of work isn't the issue, in fact it is helpful. The notes are the issue, it's like a scavenger hunt. 3 resources are given to fill out the notes. So much time is wasted filling out the notes and searching for the example just to learn the concept. Time could be spent better.
If you do not get 90% + on an exam you're required to redo every question at home & email your new test for 3 points. You have to fill out notes "correctly," scan, and email them to him. With no answers to any of his examples on the notes, its hard to tell if you're on the right track. Symbolab and Desmos are will help you learn on your own.
worst class i have ever taken in my entire life. supposed to be in person, but rona made it online. didn't even have a class, posted youtube videos and left you in the dark. I was already retaking this class and struggling and i think he managed to make me understand it less. gives you no help, made me think he wanted me to fail DO NOT TAKE THIS!!!
Nathan Kurtz is by far my favorite professor in my college career. He is caring, funny and is an amazing teacher. I have always said math isnt my strong subject, but he made it so understandable and easy to follow along. He puts so much effort into his lessons. He can be sarcastic but he is a real person who speaks his mind, but it's all to help
The Homework/quizzes/test are from a 3rd party and the videos are from him. The material hardly matches up. If you were to just go off the information that he provides you will fail the class. You must do your own research on youtube for success in this class.
The study guides do not match the tests so be prepared for extra time looking for probable test question in the notes/online through different sources. I do not feel prepared what so ever for my next math class
Tests made up 70% of the class grade, very inflexible with the deadlines of assignments even during a pandemic, and he doesn't give you enough time in between the test and the last section to review.
I cant believe I actually paid for this class. GCC usually has a high standard for teachers but I guess this one slipped through the crack some how.
Gave unclear instructions for the first set of assignments and made the students suffer for it, before and after the first test he made himself unavailable for tutoring, questions or clarification. Throughout the classes duration it felt as if you were trying to anticipate the rules he would come up with while grading. 4 tests 75% of your grade :/
Grading system unfair, I did amazing on hw, quizzes, notes, and I didnt do so great on the first test and my grade dropped significantly, to the point I could not pass if I received 100% on everything else after that. He was not understanding, not willing to do retakes, and unclear on exactly what he will be grading on the test. Be ware.
Dr Kurtz was mean to me when I asked him for help. He was very intimidating which made me stop asking questions. Sometimes, he would belittle students for not knowing the math from high school. He should've been more patient and understanding for students especially during a pandemic. Do not take.
He is no great professor. He gets through most of the material you need to know. Though, some I had to look up online. If you plan to take this class in the summer, make sure it's the only class you're taking during the summer. The courseload is enormous. I never asked for help, so as for being of help, you'd have to figure that out on your own.
Professor Kurtz is really great at making concepts easy to understand. His sense of humor also makes his class enjoyable. But his class wasn't without its difficulties, that being the amount of homework primarily. And because of the two-day-a-week schedule our class would often have to cram an entire packet into one hour long class period.
Professor Kurtz is a phenomenal instructor. He was incredibly accessible outside of class, and always offered plenty of office hours and at home home work. I was not good at math, and its because of his great teaching that I was successful in his class.
Horrible class.
I took his 140 class back a couple of years ago and enjoyed it, but after this term, he is the worst teacher I have ever had. He doesn't teach the material that is on the tests and homework. You'll spend most of your time on Chegg or Mathway. He doesn't respond to emails or if he does he sends it right before it's due.
Not encouraging and only looks into things when you email more than once.
Overall, very smart guy. He knows what he's talking about. The class I took was 3 months long so makes sense for immense amount of homework. My other classes were light so most of my focus was on this class. Would not recommend taking his class if you work full time jobs (maybe part time) or if you have another difficult class.
This professor really knows what he is talking about. He helped me truly understand math and really took time to make sure we understood. DO YOUR PRACTICE TEST!!If you do your practice test you will pass the class. He offers late work full credit and retakes on test. He is really a teacher who cares if you succeed just need to do the work.
Nathan Kurtz is an average professor; he gives lots of homework, and sometimes he takes a while to respond to emails and messages. However, he provided answer keys so that you can check your work. The grade you get on notes and quizzes can be either a zero or a hundred percent. He is a picky grader; make sure that you show all of your work!!
For the online class, videos are 4 years old and have lots of background noise/ mouth noises from the professor. Answer keys are provided but have errors in them, and after these errors were pointed out the answer keys were not updated. Some assignments were completely missing the answer key making them impossible to check. Unfair expectations.
Tough but fair. I wouldn't describe him as rude but he speaks very matter-of-factly which I can understand may offend more sensitive people. He taught a very methodical, step-by-step approach to solving problems. Strict when it comes to neatness and showing work, which again may seem nitpicky but it's been very useful for solving difficult problems
Way too nit-picky. You can complete assignments and show all your work step-by-step, and he will give you a zero on the entire assignment if each step is not written the exact same way that he would write it. I'm not sure how this level of specificity in assignment completion is supposed to help students in understanding the material.
Loved this professor. This was a hybrid class, he provided videos with math homework, definitely show up to lectures. Some subjects were difficult for me but as long as you put in the work, it'll pay off. He uses Aleks for homework and prints off most of the notes for you, very helpful and very funny. Loved the way he explained stuff in the class.
