DROP CLASS NOW!!! failure to do so will result in a serious drop in GPA.
a lot of work for both reading and writing, but fairly interesting
Very Hard, but if you do what he asks, your alright.
enjoyed the reading and the papers were easy
pretty fast pace, but if you can keep up you'll do just fine, easy papers
A tad difficult, encouraging, easily understood, interesting issues, very sexy!

I hated him the vocab quizs got old and the reading was stupid.
avoid him if possible

Complete nut. Gives you daily quizes on irrelevent subjects and bonus questions you'll hardly ever get. Loses papers and will lower your grades because of it.
I dreaded going to class with him, the class was pointless to begin with but his comments drove me nutts. He's a nice guy and he means well, but he's not funny just strange.
This guy is way out there in left field somewhere. The material he puts in in his quizes' have nothing to do with the subject, and he makes no attempt to prepare you for them.
Totally frusterating! Gives ridiculous quizzes at a very fast pace. Avoid this guy if at all possible.
Currently at midterm, out of over 100 students in his Eng 150 classes, OVER 50% OF HIS STUDENTS ARE FAILING! What kind of teaching is that? Very hard quizzes and he grades extremely tough on papers. :(
the hardest class i have taken to date. avoid it at all costs
He is a bit strict on stuff. He has a squeaky, high pitched voice, kinda like a helium voice. He was forced us to write, defending his side a lot.
This was the hardest class i have ever took in my life. i thought it was terrable and i recommend EVERYONE to stay away because he is TOUGH. his vocab quizes are very hard, and you never ever get a paper right even if you try all day and night. STAY AWAY!
i have never been in a class this hard. he gives out these vocab tests that are ridiculous pieces of garbage. most of them he has to curve because no one in the class passed. will not explain any grammer rules and relates everything to a long boring story
Nelson should stick to farming x-mas trees for a profession because he definately is not good at teaching. If you want to be in a class where 55% of the students are failing at midterm, then Nelson in the teacher for you. If you want to do well...run!
I loved this guy! He was so nice and funny. Could have kept his shirts buttoned so his chest hair didn't hang out, though. I took him for both 150, and 250. Easy if you just do your work and study.
He is a very helpful guy who means well. He gives a lot of quizzes which are really hard and his papers are graded tough. However, I did enjoy his classes and I did learn a lot from him. If you have the right attitude, then i would highly recommend him
Very hard class, very intimidating
He was a very honest teacher, If you read the sylabus and did everything he tells ya you will do good. I didn't I got a C- thank you lord. He is a rather christan man, and works as a x-mas tree farmer. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS if you cant work by yourself.
Life has passed him by. He grades harder than anyone I have taken and needs to get away from talking and reading about Jewish stuff. We read a book written by a Jewish author. It seemed like that's all he talked about. Needs a life.
Hated this teacher....very very very hard! Unless you are a 4.0 student who studies their whole life instead of actually having a social life then this would be the class for you. However if you are even a 3.99 student I would recommend anyone but NELSO
The almost-daily quizzes are a good way to keep you from slacking, getting behind, and regretting it come exam week. The class is not unreasonably difficult; you just can't expect it to be like high school; you must actually work.

He's a little preachy. Watch out his vocab tests are killer. He also grades hard on papers.
This class is hardly bearable. He grades impossible. No way to figure out how he grades either. If you can take someone besides him. Somehow I pulled off a C-! If you don't like vocab tests then don't take him!
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. He grades extremely hard and the vocabulary quizes are death traps. You have to know a ton of info on the words, including etymology. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS! SERIOUSLY
If you want to hear his views on God, then go ahead and take it. His grading is impossible, and you'll never do what he wants. He does not teach you how to write, just tells you his opinion. If you take this class, write his opinion and your golden.
Professor will make you work. Vocab. Test are hard unless you can memorise. He is always willing to help when it comes to papers sets aside office time for those who want to ask for help.
he has no life!! he expects that you dont either! I will put it into 1 word for everyone NO! his vocab tests are extremely in depth and his tests are out of this world! his tests consist of all fill in the blank and it requires you to memorize ever little piece of material! good luck!
He is the worst teacher I've ever had! His vocab quizzes are so hard, his tests don't make sense! I love English, got an A in English 1, but I was failing this class so now I have a W! Be prepared to know EVERYTHING you ever cover in that class because you need to remember it all!
If you are stupid enough to read these comments and still take Nelson then you deserve the terrible grade that you will get! Nelson is not only a horrible and unreasonable professor, he is terrible person. Nelson, please do us all a favor and quit, your wasting students money.
This was the worst teacher that I have ever had. I would not recommend this class to my worst enemy. If you are in his class GET OUT NOW!!!!!
So this guy is very religeous and hard. If you would like a challenge, take his class and do well. He gives vocab tests...with definitions not found in the dictionary. There is a lot of reading and the papers are based on books. He grades his papers HARD. He is hard core homework. Take someone else!
I learned tons in this class, it was a class that i felt was worth my money and my time. I took in double paced in the summer while working full time and still managed a B+.
The WORST professor ever!! If you choose the fail a class that should be easy take his. He is horrible. If you don't know the greek language, don't expect to pass!

This guy really knows what he's talking about. BUT if you aren't a literature freek this class is going to suck for you. There is aprox. 30 pages of reading every class sesion. There is five papers due throughout the semester. One every three weeks.
Ok if you can write somewhat and get your ass up to get his help with your papers and are willing to read 20-30 pages every 2 days you are set. The 5 papers are 3 pages long and you write about a certain thing in the story you read. He explains stories so well that sometimes you dont haveto readthem
Heres the deal, if you want a professor who will teach the subject, take Nelson. If you're going to college just for the purpose of getting a piece of paper then, by all means, take someone else. I learned more in this class than any other and with a LITTLE effort managed an A. He makes you earn your grade, but whats wrong with that?
This guy ties EVERYTHING he teaches with religion. He gives pointless vocab quizes in which he makes you find the rooting meaning. Hey Nelson, Ill let you know when I use that in my work life! He also is VERY lazy. He makes you copy and highlight your sources along with a work cited page. Ya, that makes a lot of sense. Do Not Take...Bible Thumper!!
this teacher doesnt teach anything he gives vocab quizes that have nothing to do with real life. And the papers you have to do are on stuff that has nothing to do with anything and are borning. His class sucks!!!
This is the worst prof I have ever had. If you take this class he will do his best to fail you to prove a point that you really are not a straight A student. Avoid
His class was tough for me. He grades harshly, and he is very driven by religion. I got a decent grade but it was a dificult grade to earn. Vocab quizes help or hurt there is no in between. Papers are basically simple but they are on subjects that few people care about. If you are up for a challenge he is a great Prof. But if you want the easy grad
In response, he doesn't grade based on whether you're an A student or not. It's ridiculous to assume he's out to get you. Truth is, you didn't work hard enough, or didn't use him as a resource to help. His class really is a challenge, but that's what I enjoyed about it. Keep it up Dr. Nelson!
He's a really nice guy, but his class is really really hard. if you want an easy A this is not your class, If you like a challenge take him but be prepared to hear about God Everyday... I dare anyone who takes his class, on the first day to raise their hand and say, "I don't Believe in God" then drop his class, becuase you are likely going to fail.
If you are a Non-traditional student, do not take Dr. Nelson. As an older student, he made me feel like I was in 9th grade again. You have to learn word entomology, have vocab quizzes and learn parts of speech. This is cool for english majors but too much for the pre-reqs. He will help if you have questions and is a pretty nice guy.
He's a really good teacher and overall nice guy. He does grade your essays kind of hard. There are vocab quizzes and quizzes on the readings sometimes so make sure you read the assignments. The novel you read is kind of dumb but easy to get through and be done with.
I worked my butt off and learned a ton. He is an awesome professor if you are in college to learn. He knows what he is doing and his personal spiritual beliefs were in no way constrictive of his subject matter. anything posted otherwise is a cop-out and is an ad-hominem attack. Dr. Nelson is a good man and a good professor.
Dr. Nelson was one of the best teachers I have had at Ferris. There were only three or four big papers to write. It was a hard class, but I actually learned something.
Yes, you will fail every daily quiz if you don't read the material. But read the assignment before class and you are guaranteed to get an A or B on each one.
He is the right teacher for you if you are an english major and like this kind of stuff. If you are taking this for pre-reqs find another teacher. You have quizzes all the time on reading assignments and vocab. He makes it very difficult to get an A
nice guy, not a good teacher. ridiculously hard, even if you study your butt off. grades ridiculously hard.
He's really hard. You have to read this assingments. Everything in the class it not related to the papers. I have gotten nothing out of his class. It's an easy class if you want to spend your time on vocab. Nothing is intertwined, paper subjects are very broad.
He's a nice guy, but his class is SUPER hard. I was editor of my school paper in high school, and he had a field day with my papers. But, if you take your papers to him before they are due, he will tell you what is wrong and you will get a better grade by doing so. Learned a lot, but a lot of work is required for this class.
He is a professor. He does not act like a high school teacher and treats you like an adult. You will have a lot of homework. He gives clear directions on essays and grades according to how you follow them. There is daily hw and biweekly vocab quizzes with vocab words that are pulled from the reading. You also have to write reading resp in a journal
Nelson is a great guy and his class isn't that hard. If you like English (Reading & Writing) you should be fine. The vocab can be a little tedious, but it isn't that bad. Overall he's neither easy nor hard, you have to do your research and earn your grade.
Nelson will really make you think in your papers. Papers are about real world issues and the assignments are quite interesting. You live by the textbook, and vocab is tedious, but other than that, great class and great prof. Also gives lots of office time and schedules conferences for extra help.
Overall he is a good teacher. I really enjoyed his class. Make sure you do the readings and study your vocab so you do well on his quizes. He is a funny guy and I really enjoyed going to his class.
His Class Is Very Hard, If You Can Take another professor, I wouldnt recommend him to any incoming freshman. He taught juniors for the past 7 years, he expects too much of freshmen! Good Luck
He's a great guy and he will let you turn you're stuff in late. It's a challenging class with a bit of work, but it's not that hard of work. Very reasonable man.
Shoves too much religious information in his assignments that not everyone might understand. The work is pretty easy and straight-forward and he lets you turn in late work if you're not terrible about it. Have to know the etymology of words for vocab tests which is annoying, but not a bad class. He's not a terrible teacher.
Ridiculously hard teacher! Don't take this class if you can avoid it from him. A perfect score on a paper is a 93/100! I went to his office hours and had him go over my assignment and I still received a 93!!! You also have weekly vocab quizes on spelling/origin/tenses/and roots. He only gives you the words! he expects everyone to find it all out!
He gives out weekly vocab quizzes...these help your grade! All of the work you do before your big paper actually has to do with the big paper! Definite plus!
He is a very smart guy and you will learn something's he just has tough vocab quizzes
Vocab quizzes are too tough... He is a tough grader... Perfect essays to him don't exist! The best I received was a 92%
If you don't understand you better catch on fast or your in a boat all by yourself. There are 4 papers due which must be seriously done, I received C+ on all of mine. Vocab is mandatory and must get good grades on those quizzes to pass.
I learned a lot from this class. Curved vocab quizzes are every Wed. He expects you to study for the quizzes, read short stories/articles out of the textbook, and do four MLA research papers (from a list of prompts). He'll edit your papers during office hours and take questions over the reading and vocab. He's very smart and a fair teacher.
He is really hard to work with, not very understanding AT ALL.
He is useless when it comes to the conferences. All he told me was "add detail". His quizzes are the worst! They are always different from the last too. From each quiz he takes the most missed questions and puts them on the final.
Weekly vocab quizzes make up a good portion of your grade. They are curved, which gives you a great opportunity to earn extra credit. As long as you actually study, they are easy. You read a lot of sections out of the book, but he rarely quizzes over them. They are mostly to help with the essays. I took this class while in high school.
He provides significant amount of feedback if you visit him during his office hours and apply effort. Not a professor for someone who is excuse driven as he expects the same amount of effort as the real world. Quizzes are a great grade booster if you are not a writer.
Personally, I struggled to get through the class. The class was not just hard, the professor was very unclear on assignments. I even tried getting help from the professor to see how I could improve, but he wasn't helpful and didn't answer my questions. Even After getting a tutor I still hardly made it through the class.
I took his class twice to prove that I could get a better grade for the harder class, but I would not recommend him as a professor. He doesn't really believe in giving out A's. He thinks to get an A you have to surprise him with you paper writing skills.
If you have a choice to pick a different professor, do so. Vocabulary quizzes are hard, these are the only vocabulary quizzes where it doesn't help to know the definition. Also papers that are assigned doesn't come with specific directions. Wouldn't recommend him as a professor if English isn't your specialty.
I am a sophomore taking this class and it was easily my hardest class and I am taking accounting right now. Really nice guy but he makes his class way too hard. The best I did on an essay was a 78 and you have vocab quizzes every week that are really hard and you have to find the Latin root of the words. I wouldn't take him again
Yes, the class is hard. The vocab quizzes were the bane of my existence, I averaged 70% on them. I also didn't study, so I didn't expect much better. The papers include some basic guidelines but inspire creativity. Only one did I get less than a 90%, but I did it the night before. The rest I went far beyond the length and source requirements.
He's a great guy. He has quizzes every Wednesday on 16 vocab words, but my vocabulary expanded greatly and I enjoyed learning it. He is a tough grader of the papers, but just don't be an idiot and you'll do fine.
He is great teacher and all, but if you just want to pass by and get a B or A DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. His class will require you to try very hard. If you want the challenge then take your shot.
He is a great guy and a great professor. Cares heavily for his students, the class is just challenging. He helped me out in the end with my grade. Study for the weekly vocab quizzes.
Nelson has an old school approach to teaching that I did not enjoy. His class worked by you reading whatever section of the book, and then you sat in class while he talked at you about the section, during this time he would often voice his opinions (which I did not care for). He is also a super tough essay grader, so you HAVE to do well on vocab
Literally only about 2/3 weeks in and I can already tell this class is going to be HARD. Would not recommend taking him if you don't have creativity with writing. He barely gives you any guidelines to follow. Some may see that as an advantage but i personally would like to know what he's really looking for and he doesn't exactly help/tell you.
You have to be a creative writer when it comes to his essays. There are weekly vocab quizzes which can be a pain and inconvenience. He's a very nice professor and is willing to work with you to pass his class. Put in the effort toward studying for his vocab quizzes, and go to his office meetings when you need help and you'll succeed.
Dr. Nelson is such a sweet prof! He's very accessible for help and very fair with grading.
Dr. Nelson is a great g professor and will always help if you need it. He truly cares about his students!
Overall a great teacher. Professor Nelson is a caring teacher and always willing to help students, whether its after class or through email to get extra help on an essay. Seemed a little intimidating at first but ask for help and participate and you will enjoy to class
Tons of tiny assignments and reading quizzes and vocabulary quizzes. Almost every class period there is something graded. However, he cares a ton about what he does and will help you out as much as you need. Sets expectations high but makes it easy when he can.
Prof. Nelson is easily a great professor! He gives thorough feedback on each paper (4 total) and is very accessible outside of class! There is a bit of work to do for this course and the vocab quizzes can be tedious, but overall I think his class is clear/ straight forward as to expectations. I would definitely take his class again!
Very hard vocab quizzes that you MUST study for and you must read the assigned chapters in the book because there are quizzes on them almost every class. For essays, you dont get to pick your topic and most of the them are awful. Last 4 weeks, you read a boring book and write an essay on it. Dr. Nelson is knowledgeable and quite funny, but tough.
Vocab quizzes are hard. He will have one every week , even when you have a essay due. He will make you do both things.
He was okay. He was very nice but didn't teach much. There are vocab quizzes every Wednesday and they are very hard to pass. You read a lot outside of class and have to respond to the readings in class. Overall, he was okay, but i a not sure if I would take him again.
He was super nice and always available. Tries to help in anyway he can. The vocabulary quizzes absolutely sucked. Lots of reading outside of class. Overall, nice guy, so-so teacher.
The class was not difficult if you put even the slightest amount of effort towards it. This most difficult part was the weekly vocabulary quizzes, with obscure words that were difficult to understand. Dr. Nelson himself was very helpful and often provided assistance to those in need.
Nelson is wonderful, always answers questions, very understanding, and provides meaning full feedback on essays. Just make sure you do the vocabulary
He genuinely wants his students to succeed. He is free to help anytime. He helped me after class and spent hours on the phone with me. There is not a final, but the assignments can be brutal. The vocab quizzes are impossible. The assignments are time heavy. The essays are graded harsh and he is strict on citations. He also grades participation.
He may come off as a tough grader, but he is happy to offer help if you need it. I'm not amazing at English but I've sat down with him, asked questions, and passed with a decent grade. Honestly a good guy. He teaches the English class, kind of like a history class. We look into what is happening in the world around us and write essays about it.
Not the best but not the worst. He's available to help but lot's of assignments. Sometimes goes on tangents but can be funny. Attendance is mandatory. I would take him again. As long as you put in some effort you'll be fine.
just terrible
Honestly I think any other professor would be better than him honestly. Yeah the assignments and tests were hard, but my beef with this professor is that he would grade my assignments and test the same for the ENTIRE SEMESTER! I literally would work so hard for the first half of the semester but he would grade me so poorly I just stopped caring.
Just didn't like him at all, constantly giving us annoying assignments to do everyday.
He isn't terrible, I think he's a good teacher but he is a very harsh grader and isn't always very clear or helpful. The second half of the class is definitely rushed. There are vocab quizzes almost every week, study for those!
Very harsh grader. There are four essays during the semester and vocab quizzes most weeks, which require lots of studying. The readings before each class typically aren't very long and don't matter for classes, but it is best to read take notes on them since they need to be referenced in the essays. One essay requires you to read a 300 pg novel.
Good Professor, Grades essays strictly. You will have 8 vocab quizzes during the semester and 4 essays. Need 2 books, one online and one paperback.
Has 4 essays due in the semester and multiple vocabulary quizzes and reading responses. The vocabulary quizzes no matter how hard you study you will never be prepared enough for them, especially for the sentence portion. He makes attendance mandatory but doesn't teach at all. I do not recommend if you struggle in English.
Prof. Nelson's class has some challenges, but if you engage with the assignments and use resources like unstuck study, you can succeed. The work is manageable, and he provides helpful feedback.
DO NOT TAKE NELSON. I repeat, DO NOT. Vocab quizzes are ridiculous. Essay prompts are horrible. Essay feedback is in the form of "error codes" instead of personalized feedback. You will do significantly more struggling than learning. He would probably do better teaching an upper-level English class.
READ THIS REVIEW ONLY Professor Nelson is one of the best English professors at Ferris State. For the semester there is weekly and biweekly vocab quizzes along with 3 essays. Random assignments are thrown in but nothing hard. AI Scans on all papers so do not use Chat GPT! If you struggle with English and need a professor who cares, Take Nelson!
Prof. Nelson is honestly a really great teacher. The vocab quizzes are kind on unnecessary not gonna lie. There are 4 essays during the semester and if you pay attention, you'll get good grades on all of them. He does offer really great help and feedback for the work in this class.
