I actually enjoyed his class. Overall great professor. Helpful, clear, engaging, funny and also easy going. Classes were relaxed and discussions were interesting. Tests were very fair and if you went to class were easy. We turned in class responses at the end of each class too. I would definitely recommend taking this class. :)
I loved his class! Osborne is actually a grad student so he is SO relaxed and understands how it feels to be a student. His lectures are essential because they are so crystal clear. Tests and work is very fair. Go over notes and you're golden.
Nate if super helpful and approachable, his topics are clear and he teaches you just what you need to know for his class. He can be funny and clever and he's very caught up with the culture of students in his class. He puts it into terms that are easy to understand and connect with. He encourages participation and those points add up! But easy A.
Mostly just read from the textbook and wasn't very clear in his discussions. Was a tough grader when it came to papers and if your interpretations of the topic were different than his views, you were graded down. Did not enjoy this class at all. Turned me off philosophy all together.
He's a great professor. He makes everything so relatable. The lectures are pretty laid back and chill. Class consists of 1 test and 4 essays.
I was very disappointed taking this class, I got a very grade on the papers and got a C cause he grades them really hard. Dont take this class.
Mr. Osborn is a great teacher. He is respectful and patient. The material we covered should be taken by every student because it opens your mind to think critically. Participation is really important since the class is meant to encourage discussion and debate. I encourage students to take a philosophy class with him.
I took business ethics with him and it was by far my favorite class I have taken! I normally do not like philosophy, but the way he talks about morality made the class interesting and fun. I also like how he didn't believe in tests indicating whether or not you know the material. If you like writing, take him! My final grade was an A.
Fun class, but I fell asleep at times despite how entertaining and energetic he is. He encourages his students to talk, and we have a few seminars and group work in class, and sometimes he'll assign a short in-class writing assignment. He occasionally emails you weekend reading assignments. No tests, just four essays. Pretty simple!
He's an amazing professor! Lectures can long sometimes, but he does his best to keep it interesting. Doesn't do tests, papers only. He does some in-class exercises from time to time for participation points. Overall, great professor!
Phil 61*, not Phil 66. He's an amazing professor! Lectures can long sometimes, but he does his best to keep it interesting. Doesn't do tests, papers only. He does some in-class exercises from time to time for participation points. Overall, great professor!
This was my second class with him and I loved it. There are no tests, only essays (4 in total). His classes in general are always laid back. He breaks down key concepts clearly. I highly recommend him.
Assigned 4 papers and no exams. Really fun class, try to participate in discussions to get the most out of the class. He likes to tie in pop culture (loved the use of The Watchmen) and makes each ethical theory easy to understand and relate to. Hardly used the Rosenstand textbook but you NEED The Sunflower.
hes the best professor i had this semester and im an art major i can imagine being asleep in my 9am class if it had been with an old guy teaching i also love his mowhawk m/ the only textbook i needed for this class was "the sunflower"
I thoroughly enjoyed this class. So many of the concepts I learned from him I was able to apply to my other classes. The majority of the work in this class consisted of a few essays, but they were fairly short and the prompt was to the point. The reading was interesting and the film was awesome!
4 essays and one small quiz in the whole semester. Really funny cool guy! He explains the theories really well and is clear about what he wants in the essay. He's a tough grader but gives you good feedback and will help if asked so you'll be able to improve. You'll leave the class knowing you learned a lot. Love this class, would take again
Nathan's philosophy class was amazing! I enjoyed his class very much, and class discussions were a lot of fun. We did read a lot of novels though, so if you don't like reading don't take a philosophy class. There were two major midterm papers, and reflections of the books we read.
Solid choice, really funny. I mistakenly took the 3 hr once a week lecture but it was length not content that killed me. Bring a snack if you get hungry. My friends in the shorter lectures had a lot of fun as well (there is that option if you plan for it). I learned a lot more from philosophy than anticipated. Try and apply the content to life.
Professor Osborne is without a doubt the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are genuinely interesting and he made me appreciate philosophy. His class is lots of reading and essays, but as long as you pay attention you'll be fine. Great guy, funny and always prepared for class. I have so much respect for his work ethic.
Osborne is a super cool guy, I would definitely recommend taking him. He is really funny and down to earth which makes his lectures really interesting. You can tell he is passionate about it. The class is mainly essays but they're all 3-4 pages and he grades them tough but if you follow the guide lines you're good.
Couldn't have asked for a better professor! He's such a funny and chill guy but at the same time his class is unbelievably interesting. Lots of essays but all were surprisingly fun to write and he gives insightful feedback. No tests which is nice and as long as you engage and participate you should be fine. My favorite class by far :)
Professor Osborne is awesome! But do not take him if you want a class you can skip!! 20% of your grade is participation but honestly class is so fun you'll want to attend! No test just like 4 papers and a group presentation which are clear and to the point- doesn't grade too hard. Probably the best class I've taken at SJSU.
Super sweet and caring professor. NO TESTS! Just a few 3-4 page essays, one group project, and the final is a 4 page essay, as well. Come to class for participation credit. Textbook isn't mandatory as he goes over everything. 1 required book for one of his essays. You'll definitely learn a lot in this class! One of the best classes I've taken!
A decent class overall. Attendance is key and make sure to properly study the test. There's one quiz at the beginning of the year that is decently weighted if you mess up on it, it's gonna hurt. Study every day for at least an hour. HE says no but attendance is graded you don't see your grade on canvas, its a surprise at the end of the year so
By far the coolest professor ive had at sjsu! As long as youre willing to be involved in his lectures, youre golden!
He's very understanding and his whole grade is based on 4 papers and a presentation. The only book you need is the sunflower book. Amazing lectures and he's very witty and sarcastic. I loved him and wish I could take more classes with him.
Hes awesome. Hes incredibly insightful and genuine. Everything he lectures about gives you an awe moment. His papers are fun to write and participating in lectures matters! Its easy because you will WANT to speak in lectures because its more of a conversation than a lecture! I highly recommend!
Very passionate, kind professor. he is extremely understanding and cares about each of his students. I love how involved he gets the individuals in the class to be. There are about 3 papers and 2/3 quizzes. He is kind of a tough grader, but is willing to work with you.
I absolutely love his classes. This is the second class I've taken with him with the first one being PHIL12 and I enjoy them so much. There were like 2 quizzes and a couple papers. The final is an essay as well. He makes the lectures so much fun and engaging, it makes you not want to miss a class. My favorite professor at SJSU.
He is a real G. Loved this dude. A ton of reading. It was hard but I managed to BS most of the papers. I loved this dude and really liked the subject. I liked to call it a class on love. It was really cool. 9/10
I usually dont write rate my professor reviews, but this was actually the best class I've taken at SJSU. Hes one of the most chill teachers and you actually learn so much. I would recommend him not necessarily for the class but the way he teaches. He makes it so you want to go to class and want to get an A. 3 papers, no tests, fun group discussions
Hands down the coolest professor I've ever had. He is extremely engaging and explains philophosy and critical thinking very clearly. I've brought the things I learned in this class into my daily life. I highly recommend taking him for PHIL 57, his class is WAY better than Professor Patel's PHIL 57 class.
This has been my favorite Professor for 2 semesters now. He is a lecture guy but also really gets the class involved. I am getting ready to take my third class with him and looking forward to it. He's super funny and also a passionate Packers fan. He also gives great feedback and lots of time on assignments. 10/10 would recommend.
He is very welcoming to any students as long as they take the time to learn the materials. Ever since the class became online because of the pandemic, he doesn't burden the students with more workload after updating the syllabus. Other than that, it's just pure participation and writing papers based on the lecture concepts being covered.
Absolutely the best teacher Ive ever had. 110% would take again. Get ready to write essays but its worth it. Overall an amazing professor who is very understanding and great at explaining the topics. No tests and hardly any homework
By far the hardest grader I have ever had. He is really passionate about his job which is good. He is also really nice. But we are in a pandemic and doesnt let up at ALL on anything. If you want a challenge take this class. If not take someone else it will save yourself a lot of stress.
Hes cool, but he was also gone for half the semester due to paternity leave. Two papers (Sunflower and Watchmen) and one final paper. I think hes a tough grader on the essays, but overall, class is easy. No hw, no quizzes, but group work in the form of break out rooms on zoom.
he's really passionate about philosophy and makes the class interesting and fun to learn. 3 essays total in the class (watchmen movie, sunflower book, and a moral issue paper) he grades kinda hard on it but it's easy if you use the material he gives you. overall an easy class
The class is graded by 4 things. The 4th essay is the final and that is taking a topic that is learned and apply it to life. He's very fun and has amazing lectures. We had some reading and documentary assignments. Participation is part of your grade and we frequently had group discussions. Not a hard class but do well on the essays! no extra credit
Osborne is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's passionate abt what he teaches and is very understanding of students' opinions. You can expect that most classes will be lectures, however, it won't be boring bc he opens up the discussion to everyone. That being said, participation matters, but there are other ways to make points up if ur shy
Professor Osborne is one of the best professors I've taken so far! He genuinely cares about students' success and makes lectures engaging and fun to learn. I never felt extremely bored in his class. Also, he grades assignments pretty fast and responds to emails/questions in a timely manner.
He is one of the best professors I've had so far. It's a really interesting class and I felt like I learned a lot from this course. There are three major essays, and no redos, so it's kind of all or nothing. He is a pretty tough grader, so I highly recommend that you try. Participation matters, so if you don't like talking it may affect your grade.
He is by far one of my favorite teachers. He's super kind and approachable and every lecture was super interesting and easy to follow. I was never bored in the class and actually looked forward to it. Participation matters and he's sort of a hard grader but if you put in the effort, you should be fine. I never got lower than an A on any assignment
Professor Osborne has by far been my favorite professor at SJSU. I always look forward to going to his class because his lectures are interesting and he really cares about his students. He has a good sense of humor which makes lectures fun. If you are looking for a philosophy class then I highly recommend you take it with him. You won't regret it!
Not many things are graded: 2 movie reflection-based papers using the theories taught in the course, 1 group presentation, 1 final paper. His grading criteria isn't too clear but his class is so fun. He's down to earth and has opinions but never lets them get in the way of objective teaching. I would take him again. ;)
i hate romance so the books werent interesting to me and he would mark me down for the dumbest reasons ever which was annoying his class was easy but i found it really boring bc his sense of humor was so dry ofc the shakespeare stans laughed at his jokes
Your entire grade is out of 100 points, so each point counts. Professor makes lectures interesting and gives real life examples about topic. You have to buy the Sunflower book, but this class doesn't require any textbook. Make sure to participate in discussions every now and then. Class was pretty easy overall to fulfill GE requirement.
Super cool professor. Made lectures fun and easy to follow along. Your entire grade is made up of 6 things and participation is 20% of your grade so definitely go to class and do the discussions. He grades strictly and doesn't give out good grades on papers easily so make sure to put a lot of time and effort into those. Would take again
Professor Osborne is a great Professor. His lectures were very engaging and made sure everyone understood what he was saying. He makes it easy for students to reach out to him and ask questions. As long as you actually try on assignments you will get a good grade. If you are deciding what class to choose based on professors definitely choose him.
Amazing professor, learned a lot and loved going to class. Definitely get out of it what you put into it- participate if you're passionate. But there was no homework for a grade cushion and all essays were graded by TAs who gave me bad grades. Communicate with the prof if this happens to you, cause I feel like I could've saved my grade.
One of the best classes I've ever taken. Prof.Osborne makes every class engaging and I was able to fully understand and apply every concept. Definitely have to participate often but he is a very easy going person so I felt comfortable sharing my thoughts. No exams. There's 3 papers and a group project that you have a good amount of time to do.
Easily one of the best professors I've had !! You definitely need to read the books assigned since the four writing assignments all directly relate to the books read and are not doable with just common sense. Showing up for lectures helps a ton to do well on assignments but participation isn't mandatory. The class can be as fun as you make it :)
I loved Professor Osborne, gives good lectures and keeps the class engaged. Only things graded is one test, a few papers, and by participation so it's important you go to his class. one of my favorite professors I've had at sjsu
Professor Osborne was so great to have! If you attended class and participate, you can do pretty well in the class. It's important that you don't put off papers in this class though because they are worth a large part of your grade. Overall, Professor Osborne is one of those professors that make a subject like philosophy exciting to learn about.
Really cared about the subjects and held open and insightful discussions.
Professor Osborne is one of the chillest professors I have run into at SJSU, He is super understanding and easy to talk to. Wish every professor could be like this guy he makes it enjoyable to go to class, and makes it fun to participate. No hesitation would take a class with him again.
Professor Osborne was one of the best teachers I have ever had. His passion for the subject really shows in the lectures. Your grade is made up of mainly 3 papers and your participation, so you have to make sure you're on top of everything. Overall he is an amazing professor and I would happily take another course of his.
Ahh Professor Osborne. Most likely the chillest teacher I'll ever have in my academic career here at SJSU. What I can say is he truly cares about his teaching and impacting his students. You only have 2 4-page essays your midterm essay and the final essay. I'm so glad and thankful I got to be apart of his class it was an amazing experience 1ofakind
Man, what can I say. Professor Osborne is the best!!! He creates a great learning environment that has all students paying attention and work is reasonable. Take his classes, it's worth it!
I will always remember this class. The entire syllabus is centered around love and the work is reasonably paced. Overall, the class was really enjoyable because of how passionate Professor Osborne is about philosophy. Ended up being my favorite class. Just keep up with the readings and put some effort into the papers and you'll be fine :)
Super chill and laid back dude that cares about the class. I'm not the strongest writer and found the grading on one of the papers a bit tough but what can we expect yk. he's very approachable if anything and tries his hardest to make the lecture interesting since philosophy can sometimes get a bit boring but he does good at making It interesting.
I loved Mr.Osborne! I would say he is a tough grader on essays but other than that he is a perfect professor! He has a humor that is liked by everyone. If the content was taught by a average professor I def would've hated it, but he taught in a way that had everyone engaged. I would take again 100%.
Professor Osborne truly cares about all his students and he's the only professor who could've made a philosophy class so much fun. There is a discussion board that you have to post to after each class, super easy points. DO THEM because that is your participation points and are weighed highly. 3 papers, a bit of a tough grader but again easy class.
I think the textbook definition of a great professor. Respectable, relatable, knowledgeable, passionate, thought provoking, and light on the assignments. Can easily say #1 on my list for best professors on campus
No HW, lots of papers with good feedback, very fun class. I didn't use the textbook just lecture notes so it's important to go to cIass. In class discussion / participation is important!
Overall a great teacher. Probably one of the best teachers that I have had in my years as a student and one of the most understanding professors at that. He is overall an incredibly good teacher and a good person as well
The best lectures I've ever had! He's a super cool guy and made the classes really fun. It's important to participate but he makes it really easy! There's no homework or busy work, just three essays and a group project. The only thing I would've changed is the lack of feedback on the essays.
One of the few times I can say I've received actual good quality and actionable feedback from a professor. If you don't like writing, the workload is a bit tough. His grading requires you to put some effort. Would recommend as a summer GE A3 course.
Simply the best
Not a free A like I expected, expects participation and reading, and is strict on having to use his explanations of ethical theories even when some of those ethical theories are ridiculous on the essay (Anyone who is a kantian has brain damage). However, his class is fun and social and he does go into ethical theories. Leans left wing.
Great professor! He is very passionate about his class. Great discussion in class. Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory but he does grade on participation. No homework only a few papers and a group project.
Professor Osbrone's lectures were easy to understand. He is welcoming, fun, and likes when you speak up. There are also not many assignments (3 essays, 1 presentation). Make sure you do the discussion posts bc your points add up for participation. I looked forward to each class! He does not grade harshly as long as you put effort into your work.
His class was my favorite this semester! He's funny, likable, and accessible outside of class. Great at making hard concepts easy to understand. Lectures are always super engaging and fun. The only issues are that he can be a tough grader & doesn't provide much essay feedback. Grading consists of 3 essays, 1 group project, & participation credit.
This class was definitely interesting, however he is a tough grader. His feedback was extremely vague and it didn't help me improve my writing based on his standards. I don't think it's a difficult class, the essays can be a bit overwhelming though.
Great professor really enjoyed his lectures. I would recommend you go to class if you want to know more on what to write in your essays. Not much assignments but assignments are crucial for your grade. Easy class.
One of my favorite classes, I have ever taken, He was really understanding and is always willing to help out with confusion or questions about his lectures and has always shown his love and passion for philosophy. His 3 papers are graded heavy but he gives lots of good feedback. His jokes are funny and lectures are interesting even during a 9am.
Professor Osborne is THE GOAT. He's funny and he is very laid back. The class discussions we have feel like actual conversations. I'm not one to normally participate in class but this class made me want to. Assignments are very straight forward (all the essays have clear expectations), and the class content is very interesting and informative.
Super amazing, clear lectures, and the way he lectures makes you want to learn more about the subject. So nice and funny, and his class is always full even though participation isn't required. Would definitely take him again if I had the chance. And he rocks a cool a** mohawk.
Very nice and passionate teacher, but he is definitely a little bit of a tough grader, and there are only 3 essays in the class that determine most of your grade.
Hard grader but gives great lectures. Has a group project and three 5-page papers based on books you need to buy/rent to read. Books weren't bad but 5 pages is too long for you to get to your point. The papers basically determine your grade plus attendance. He has great energy and passion but if papers aren't your thing, don't take the class!
Really cool guy great professor I originally took his class to fulfill a GE requirement but I genuinely enjoyed his lessons and lectures so much that I took another class with him. He is incredibly understanding and has a really interesting way of lecturing really easy grader even tho there r very few assignments I hate school but loved his classes
TAKE HIS CLASS!! His lectures are engaging, and he comes up with interesting topics that actually made me listen and participate (coming from someone who is an introvert). A very easy class with little work besides 1-2 essays and 3 other essays that are required sadly by the department (not in his control!). He understands his students, and cares.
Professor Osborne is the funniest professor in all of SJSU. He respects his students as adults, and being in his class was a great pleasure. I've learned important life changing lessons from his class. After taking his PHIL-44HA class, I've been changed for good. I'm overjoyed to have him again for my critical thinking class.
