He is a really nice teacher and tries to make ethics easy. there are 3 tests, 5 summaries, participation and a paper and extra credit. you can easily pass if you just put in the effort. good class
He is a great teacher for anyone who has to take ethics. Exams are not hard if you attend most of his lectures and write good notes. He also gives study guides which are very helpful.
really great teacher. likes saying crude things (not offensive, just weird) for shock value. one of my favorite classes.
my only complaint is that the test are wird. there is a review but sometimes the test contains very little of the review paper. the reading assignments are very boring. i got a B in the class but did have to work hard. his personality is great, does use wird exaples(cruel and funny) but that mmakes class better. then again its PHILOSOPHY!!!
He's a nice teacher; polite and funny. There are 3 tests and final is not comprehensive. Each test consists of 3 essays and T/F questions along with matching terms with the correct phrases. Time consuming partly due to the writing, but I enjoy the class
He was a great teacher. After I settled into how he lectured and taught, I really enjoyed the class. He will tell you that you have to work hard to get an A in the class. he is not lying. I would take him for another class, but it is not my major.
Do not take his online class if you don't plan to spend the whole semester writing one paper after another and reading one book after another!!! There was a lot of work to do especially during the week of the finals!!!!! Although he seems like a nice teacher and is very clear about the subject, the work load is just way too heavy.
Such a helpful professor. You have 4 quizes and he substitute the lowest grade with the highest grade. You can ask him anything and he willl respond, usually in a jiffy. He would even pregrade my work before submition so i can improve my work and get a better grade. He just really wants his students to learn, i am learning alot in this class.
Good Prof. I took him 4 a Logic class. He is really interested in Phil & its branches. @ times, he goes off the deep end chatting about Einstein & Godel etc. but what Phil. Prof wouldn't? You need a brain to take his class. If you don't have one, don't take him. He reminds me of Napolean Dynamite and he should be teaching @ a prestigous university.
Prof. Poage is a wonderful instructor. He is very wise and extremely helpful. If you need Philosphy, HE is the one to take...
Mr. Poage always responds to emails right away! But this is a very hard class 5 Essays, 2 group projects, 5 test, lots of reading, and you must do the discussions daily. He grades very hard! I only took this one class and it was like having a full time job. I think that by the end of the semester most students has dropped the class way too many
I had him for Honors Humanities. He's constantly throwing stuff out there for you to figure out. It was a fun class, but I had to work hard for my A. Initially I had difficulties, but after a few meetings with him, I kinda figured out what he wanted. Great Lecturer, I never fell asleep in his class.
Took course online during a mini-mester (2 weeks class over holiday break). Good class, A LOT of reading and A LOT of work but all PHIL classes have same amount of work. High expectations on essays. Great response time to questions and emails. Keep up with schedule and you will do fine.
Took his class online Spring 2009. I in his class while I was pregnant and after I had my 2nd son. Plain and simple study and you'll have no worries. Nice man cares about you and what you're trying to do! I left with a B+!!!!
Very High expectations on essays. A Lot of reading and writing. Good points: Test are fairley easy and you don't need the book.
His lectures weren't informative. I learned more form the books that we read than I actually learned from his lectures. He seemed distracted and disconnected from the class. He is very knowledgeable but not a good professor. He does not encourage discussion in the class, and he does not know how to relate philosophical concepts to students.
Students who write well can easily earn high grades in this writing-intensive course. Assignments are clearly explained and relevant; a rubric is provided in advance. Discussion is not encouraged, but lectures are well composed. An individual student presentation is required; instructor may embarrass students presenting. Limited individual attentio
I took him for symbolic logic. I fortunately already had a past knowledge of logic. I would suggest this class to anyone. He tries as hard as possible to explain and simplify a subject that is not so easy to grasp.
Doesn't grade in a timely manner, and he loses assignments
I took him online during the summer. He was clear with his grading, and had rather simple tests. If you read the material, you're good. Also, I don't know why ratemyprof limits the amount of books you can put. The other ISBNs are 0872204200 (Discourse), 0872203301 (Gandhi), 0486290360 (Vindication). He teaches the material and grades reasonably.
I took this course online in Spring 2011. Overall Mr. Poage seems to be a very nice person and helpful from my interactions with him via email. But I did find the course to be difficult. The biggest thing that I didn't like about the course was the group project. It was really hard getting the group together to work on the project.
Took him in summer online. It was a fairly easy class. The only thing is that you have to read 4 books. He grades essays fairly. The grading scale is nice. It is easy to get an 'A' in the class as long as you are willing to read the books. I recommend him.
Quizzes are difficult and often times do not even cover the materials in the books. Received no feedback on essays whatsoever. Grading scale is extremely strict. Received a score of 898.75 (89.9%) on a 1000 scale, and professor would not round up. Would not recommend this professor.
I really loved his class bc at first it seemed boring but then when u tske the first test you will understand why you need to pay attention..I love the way he tlks abt the same thing &re-interates over&over while this may be boring to some,it is extremely helpful w/memorization when it comes to testing esp if you do not read!!..GREAT professor!
This professor is unreasonable when it comes to grading. Not helpful at all, quizzes aer extremely difficult and irrelevant to the material to be read, I don't recommend him at all
4 books to but but you only read excerpts. Called on a friend of mine who is a philosophy major still getting B and C. The material is ambiguous and unclear. He is not quick to respond and when you only have a week to work on a paper having to wait a day for a response it tough. If you want to work then take his class
Essay grading was hard. If you take him, make sure to cite secondary sources. Quizzes irrelevant to reading material. Group project at the end is not hard, but getting everyone to participate is tough. Had 4 books but only covered certain excerpts.
BORING. He speaks his Intro to Ethics lectures as a philosophy professor 100%. A lot of reading and 4 essays. Extra credit is stupid. I have to take an Energy pill for his class.
Have to listen in class and take good notes and do every homework which is given every class.
FOR PAPERS/PROJECT YOU HAVE TO CITE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SOURCES. (Primary would be the article from bioethics textbook. Secondary is when we quote something the article itself quotes. it will always have references and footnotes at the end of the article) YOU HAVE TO DO INTERNAL CITATION IN PAPER/PROJECT FOR BOTH PRIMARY AND SECONDARY CITATION.
Make sure that you follow the essay requirements to the Tee. If not you will fail. Quiz's are somewhat related to the assigned book, but give yourself ample of enough time to read the entire section before the quiz. Do not exspect a email response back in a timely matter, learn how to defend for yourself.
It's work but he is very clear from the beginning about what is required. The extra-credit is worth it and you do need to review his study guides to hope to pass the tests. He is fair and the work is fair, passed with a B w/o doing too much reading. Took the 8wk course. Hated the group project only cause i hate working in groups :)
Do not take this proffessor, His grading is tough and dont grade your work on time.
READ, READ, READ.... he is very clear from the beginning about what is required. The syllabus is clear read and and follow every detail. He is fair and the work is fair. Do the work ,read and you will pass
Does not actually grade papers, pretty sure a TA or a program just highlights out of MLA format that was so strictly taught to students in 8th grade. Does not grade for content, if you wanted a philosophy class then dont take this professor. This is just English Essay Writing 101 with different books.
His class is an easy A if you pay attention in class. Miss one day and you better start reading the textbook chapters you missed or you'd be lost during the next class. He is a fair grader and the class is interesting and easy to comprehend. One plus is you can find the book free online. He does give homework and drops lowest test grade.
4 essays; grading is tough. highest grade I received on the essays was an 89. You have to cite primary and secondary sources. 4 quizzes and a final; easy and 10 discussions. Even though essay grading was bad, I still received an A. so its good overall. Enjoy!!!!!
the guy is a bit awkward and can sound pretty boring at times, but he is engaging and does play games with us for review. This class does teach a lot of real world logic and fallacies that i do use in debate or decision making. in short, he's alright.
Do NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH HIS STUDENTS ONLINE. I regret taking his CLASS
Notes were so riddled with typos that they were difficult to read. Prof was poor at communicating. For papers, syllabus said MLA style, but then marked me down when I didn't use a very specific Philo style. Other students' discussion posts plagiarized paragraphs from websites, and he did nothing. I got an 'A', but I would not take him again.
This instructor is very difficult I would not recommend him to anyone, he's strait hard on the students. You do your work and most of it's not graded ardingly, if you write an essay and he thinks you may have copied something from a book or magazine and at the end of work you cite he still takes it upon himself to give you a failing grade, no good.
Tough grader, wouldn't recommend him to anyone. Gives a zero for missing a punctuation. Too many textbooks for one class.
This guy grades so tough and he is quick to give a zero. He will give you a zero in a heartbeat for a very minor error like not adding a comma. I don't recommend him at all. He makes the course more difficult than it should be. I don't know about this one !!!!!!
save yourself the stress and look elsewhere. assigned reading was muddled and disorderly as was his grading criteria. i made a B in the class even after submitting all the extra credit work. Tries to turn a simple phil class into astro-physics. Completely uninspiring and inept at teaching.
Just completed this course for the mini session of summer and it was great I got an A! Professor Poage is super nice and he is very knowledgeable about what he's teaching, you'll have an essay to write every week and a test to complete. Read the sections required and there's no reason why you shouldn't end up with the same grade as I did :)
Ive made an A in every english class i have taken but this guy has given me a C on every paper!! His essay requirements are so broad but then he goes and grades so tough. The readings are over the top long and confusing as well as the quizzes. Do not take him if you have the choice it is the worst class!!!
Great instructor. He provides great feedback and make sure you have the knowledge needed for the course. I would select him for another course.
I took this guy online for Phil 1301 and found his class heavy on the reading with a fair amount of quizzes and essays. He is good at giving you a variety of topics to respond to in graded group discussions and essays. I did the readings and made B+ to A- on all the quizzes and essays. Thumbs up.
Took online class with Poage, he doesn't interact so much which was good for me. pretty straight forward, do the work & you'll be fine. Tough grader on essays, received a C in each one -_-
Professor Poage is a great teacher. He is very patient in a classroom of unresponsive students. He explains topics adequately and I can see he tries very hard to help us understand the material. You read 3 books for the semester but they arent incredibly hard, he grades the papers mostly on grammar. Also dont miss a class, you will miss ALOT.
Good professor, interesting class
I took him online. EVERY time I would try to contact him when I had a question about an essay he never would respond I would have to message him 2-3 times for him to respond 2 weeks later. HORRIBLE. I wish i would have dropped out.
Took online. He didn't update anything in the system, due dates were off so it was easy to get confused. Nothing's organized, barely located the syllabus. Discussions required but they are easy, especially the student-led discussions. Essays/exams are a bit difficult because the textbooks didn't contain all info. Class is easy if you do work though
Professor Poage is the worst. He wont respond to any of your emails for weeks, even about critical issues. Avoid him at all costs. I can't speak to his classroom teaching, but for an online course where communication is important, he can destroy your chances of success. He will give you Cs or Bs for essays with absolutely zero feedback.
Professor Nathan Poage is a tough grader, I passed all the four(4) exams with A's but I ended up with a C in his class. He doesn't reply emails and he is not fast at grading. All the discussions and extra credit posted didn't count towards to your final grade. YOU also have to read the books, its the worst class ever picked online for me.
Beware of Professor. Tough grader on essays, doesn't give clear feedback and doesn't response back at all.
do you work and you will pass. I got an A even though my essays were both 80's
Took Professor Poage online over Summer. Honestly, the books were pretty boring and I'm not into Philosophy at all but read them and you should do well. The essays are based off of the books and he did provide a wide array of topics. The discussion posts are easy points. 3 books in five weeks is tough but with good study skills you will succeed
Tough grader on essays. Although i went to tuitors for proof reading and gramma corrections but professor poage still gave me a 80s in all my essays. Test are easy if you read the books . I advise you use the outline because it breaks down the book and most test answers were in the outline. He gives extra credit and that really helped.
Fantastic Professor! If you do the reading, hand in work and participate in class you'll get an A. Lot's of extra credit opportunities. He wants you to do well and if you show that you're trying you'll be fine.
Very straight forward class. Just Read the material and write the discussions (10 discussions). 3 quizzes (50 questions each/ multiple choice) 2 essays (tough grader on essays), 1 final exam (multiple choice). Mostly all questions for the quizzes and final exam are online (quizlet). Usually replies to emails 1 day later. Very easy class, easy A.
Don't take this teacher if you don't like to read or do essays. Nothing is on Google for exams and quizzes.
A lot of reading, and you have two papers due, tough grader on papers, use the tutoring site. Do the work and you will be fine.
He doesn't communicate that much, but his syllabus is clear since the beginning, he adothediscussions cause that helps a lot with the extra credits, make sure read his uploaded documents before taking the quizzes don't read the book cause you will get confused, and for the final study the previous quizzes and do his study guide for the final test.
Class requirements are cut & dry. There are no surprises. Do the work & turn it in on time. 2 Essay's 3 Quizzes (25-50 questions) & Final (50 questions) 10 Discussions (extra credit included) I would recommend taking his class.
Symbolic Logic // Prof. Poage clearly explained everything and would do a review before each exam. He dropped the lowest exam grade out of 3. Pop quizzes were almost an everyday thing so show up and study material every day. Homework is due at the middle of the semester and at the end. Pretty tough class, definitely have to study a lot!
Professor Poage is an outstanding professor, his lectures are well understanding, and his test are so easy. You do need one essay and a PowerPoint presentation, but grades easily on them! EASY A!
I got good grades in all my tests (96, including the finals). My presentation was A, and the rest was completely OK. However, he gave me a B because, I missed the first day of class and that he gave a short assignment, which of course I missed since I was not able to attend. That's -50 out of 600, same rate as exams. So unfair!
Good lecturer.
Honestly, if you show up for review days and study the review guide, that's all you need to get an A's in the test. Never really read the books and make sure to do the mini in class writings (not difficult at all). A simple essay essay and presentation at the end.
His online course is perfect for someone who works full-time. There are a few readers he requires, but they don't break the bank. His writing prompts are clearly stated and his class is easy to follow. He also responds to questions in a timely manner. No complaints!
ok so boom! took him online over wither break. he required 3 books i got them but only skimmed thru them to write the 2 essays. test are google friendly except one of them. There are alot of discussion post but just answers the questions and you'll get a 100. I got a 70 and a 64 on the essays bc i rushed but still got an A+ in the class. Take Him.
i took this 8 week class in the beginning of spring. it wasn't that bad. just do the class discussions and 2 essay assignments (and you do need the textbook just in case) and 3 quizzes (50 questions) you can find some on quizlet, however, some questions will not be in it and the final exam is pretty much the same as the quizzes. got an A
You can tell he loves the material. Very nice guy. Straight forward on what he needs you to do. His test are easy based on his notes from class. Took his class for an elective and i don't regret. I, personally, liked the material thought it was interesting. Easy A.
Currently taking online for Fall semester and so far so good. Very organized, his discussions are not hard at all, you just have to read the book which he tells you what topic your writing about so you just go to that chapter in the book and read it & give your point of view. His exams are 25 questions. Final review of course at the end of semester
Professor poage was great and truly cares about philosophy and wants his students to know and understand the criteria. He is not all about the work load, but understanding what you are learning. He RESPONDS quickly to emails and grades quickly. I would highly recommend him to beginners to philosophy. I was a beginner and it was made easy to grasp.
Really enjoyed this professor! This was my first time taking online classes and this professor made it very simple for me! Just get ready to read a little and be prepared for lots of simple discussions, and a about 2 essays! Just one final test at the end of the course! Just make an effort and you'll pass!
He's a great professor for this class. You have online discussions but are very easy to do if you read the book. Most of the answers for the quizzes are online on Quizlet. He responds back to emails very quickly. There are 2 major papers for this class but again they are easy if you read the book. Easy A class. Would definitely take this professor
The class is very organized. Gives a clear understanding of what needs to be done. Grades the discussion questions easily, but grades the essays hard and cares a lot about grammar and small mistakes on essays. But, the good quiz and discussion question grades outweigh the essay grades. Two essays. Gives extra credit and wants you to pass! Take him!
Amazing teacher
The subject is a bit puzzling but he makes it to where you understand without being overwhelmed. Grade is based on discussions (7), an essay, quizzes, and a final. He provides extra credit with additional discussions. You do have to purchase three books. I recommend his class if you are a full time student.
GET READY TO READ. The class is not hard at all and that's coming from a lazy student (me) lol. I don't like to read but had to for this class. There are 3 Quizzes, 1 essay, 1 Final exam, and 7 discussions. It is not a lot of work at all and there is plenty of time to do your work. EASY A .... TRUST ME... PICK THIS PROFESSOR
The Professor provides opportunities to earn extra credit. There was an essay, 4 quiz, final, 6 discussions, plus 3 more for the extra credit. As long as you participate and do your part you will ace this course. The only thing is he left some completed assignments ungraded after grades went in.
Professor Poage Philosophy 1301 class was really easy. It is a lot of reading, but as long as you do the assignments, discussions, and quizzes you will pass the class. I took this class online anytime and for a mini mester.
All the homework assignments are available from day-1 and one can complete them by their own pace. Only two papers and 1 quiz. Great professor.
This professor is good, but you must be very careful to follow his instructions on his essay. He will not hesitate to give you a zero. I was in my A grade but I ended up to a D because he scored me a ZERO because I did not work cited all my paraphrased words. I sent a message, but he never saw reasons with me. So, be careful with him.
I took this class for Summer 1. Easy A! This professor does not use lockdown browser. This class was super easy and all you needed to do was complete your work. In this class, we had discussions, 1 essay, 2 quizzes (25 questions), 1 Final exam (50 questions). Form the discussions he is really looking for participation.
Overall, he is okay but you should be careful with his grade on essays. He did not give any rubric and no one in class get an A on the essay. B+ is the highest for essays. Overall, I still got an A but it was a stressful process.
1) test are not proctored 2) with common sense and using online assistance (quizlet) and other sites test will be a breeze 3) discussions mostly DO NOT MISS ANY OF THEM you will need every point possible at the end. He does not read the discussions, so do not pour your heart into them. 4) 2 writing assignments but he is a tough grader very tough
Not easy to work with. The final is graded very harshly. Lectures were not engaging. Not lots of work, but you can't miss anything and will need to try extra hard on the essays to get an A.
Laidback, very easy to work with, and easy 30 min lectures online. Gives quizzes but does not use lockdown browser. Easy to understand, clear grading, gave about 6 assignments the entire semester. Helpful with questions, would definitely take again for an easy A.
Pretty good class, tries to help everyone understand, and shows videos, movies, and even songs that may appeal to what we are going over. He was a heavy grader, and some stuff did seem confusing at times. He does not use a lockdown browser and if you do the work, you should breeze through the class
I used to think that philosophy was a waste of time until i took Professor Poage's intro to Phil class. It was so great, I took his Ethics class. He is the BEST. He has challenged my thinking, and I genuinely believe I have become a better, more cultured person because of him. If he taught a class on what I was thinking yesterday, i would take it.
Professor Poage is a super great professor and made taking philosophy 1301 a breeze. Not an overwhelming class at all, I took him online and don't regret it at all. Highly recommend this professor.
There is quite A LOT of reading but as long as you try, you'll be okay. There are 11 discussions, one is extra credit. One quiz, one essay and the final is a small essay. Overall, pretty easy. Do all the work, don't miss assignements. I don't think anyone can fail this class tbh. Easy A! Take him!!!
You can write the best easy and he will still give you 80 with little to no feedback, does not care if you miss any assignment even with excuse he will not care.
Easy- Show some effort you get an A
His lectures are disorganized and rapid, you start losing track where he is by week 2, so you're heavily reliant on yourself to educate. Offers a ton of extra credit, no tests, attendance is technically required but it didn't seem to affect those who skipped a lot. Overall, he was good enough for the subject, but headache worthy.
His lectures are more like rambles. You can pick up on important details if you really pay attention. There are LOTS of discussions for homework. I don't think he really reads the discussions and there's plenty of extra credit so the class is an easy A. He's nice and he seems like an interesting person but his class is not interesting :(
I took his online class. It was pretty easy, mostly discussions, one major quiz and two essays. I will say he is a bit hard on grading the essays, BUT you will forsure pass his class. I emailed him on a weekend and he responded back on a timely manner. Great professor. Would recommend to take his course.
I learned nothing in this class, and I love philosophy and was excited for this class. Philosophy is literally my major and now I'm thinking about changing it because of him. He also is a major creep. On the first day of class, he showed us videos of him at nightclubs in China filming girls dancing. DONT TAKE HIM FOR YOUR OWN SAKE
do not take. grades essays way to harsh.
So passionate about philosophy. great instructor and is so knowledgable. I was financially struggling whenever I was in his class, and couldnt afford the uber to and from campus and had to miss a cpl classes, he didnt hold it agasint me or make me even more stressed than I was. Life saver. lots of respect for him. I loved the content of this course
Professor Poage is one of the best professors I have had over the past two years. I would definitely recommend his class to others. A 5-star rating is not good enough for this Professor; I give him a 10.
This was a very meaningless class where not a single back and forth discussion happened. The work load is easy, but you have to keep track of everything yourself since he won't remind you. If you actually want to learn something don't take his class, take if you want an easy B. There's a very weird obsession with china.
Good class Prof knows his stuff and how to teach big concepts in a easy way. Enjoy the videos and music to connect ideas! Fair grader & lots of bonus credits! Just attend class and you will be able to understand the concepts. Lots of opportunity to succeed and Prof actually pushes for students to do well.
You can excel on his class as long as you are proactive with assignments.
