He will not explain much of the concepts and is completely useless.

Great Professor. Very clear and helpful. The higher level classes that he teaches are hard but he's a really nice guy and offers good explanations and examples in class.

Nice professor! Dr. Putney is really helpful if you work with him one on one during office hours. Sometimes he may not make things clear during class and can make careless errors, but there's more to like. There is quite a bit of homework (especially with Web Assign), but it is a good class to take. Don't hesitate to take it!
Putney was extremely nice, but socially a little awkward. If you like math to be explained to you step by step do not take this class! But if your a know-it-all this will be a breeze!
He does not teach a lesson at all. You must be able to understand it from reading the book or you are in some serious trouble
Mr. Putney is a nice man but is not easily understood. He doesn't teach much and you will have loads of homework. If you're picking your classes on how nice the teacher is then take this class but if not I recommend that you don't take this Mr. Putney.

Dr. Putney is a nice Guy, but if you don't know math, take someone else. You really won't learn much in class.
Dr. Putney knows the subject well, and was helpful during office hours. However, he really didn't teach and i wasted countless hours reading the chapters and going to tutoring. I got an A in the class, but the class was WAY harder than it should have been. His tests are difficult, and borderline unfair. I wouldnt recommend taking his calc class.
Mr. Putney is a likeable, knowledgable fellow. However, he is not effective in communicating this knowledge of the subject matter to his students. Unless you can learn by examples, I would not recommend this class. Luckily, tutoring got me through this class.
I agree with everyone below. I hate math, and am about with withdraw because there are beeter 201 professors, and Putney does not teach the material. It's basically read-practice-fail...
he's a nice guy but useless when it comes to calc. on tests he expects you to answer 20+ calc problems in 50min, the homework load is extreme, and he's not helpful at all. He makes stupid algebra mistakes on the examples, then expects us to be perfect on tests?! this guy is the worst prof I've ever had.
I haven't gotten to know him personally. But as far as I know, he's a brilliant man who should not be teaching. He shaves off time prior to tests to teach things that are not on the tests. Then you are left with around 30 problems that can take around 2 hours in your room with the text, and you must finish them in 50 min. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROF.
Man his class is SO HARD! I'm usually a Math Wiz, but when if came to Stats, I did not know it would be so difficult. He is a very jolly man, but that is about it. I'm practically failing his class and it is really aggravating that I try my hardest. He teaches you through examples and he acts as if you to know the material already. Avoid him!
Be ready for an intense semester. He is infamous for collecting homework not yet assigned and giving rather large amounts of homework to do. He teaches from powerpoints that aren't very good and his teaching style isn't very effective, so it may be difficult to keep up. His tests arecrammed with questions with only 50 minutes. Joyful and passionate
Dr. Putney is a really nice guy! People complain about him too much. Even though he gives too many problems on the test, he curves it accordingly, so don't worry. He lets you resubmit assignments if you didn't do well the first time. Recommended!
Putney is so confusing. we spend most of the class time teaching him. I am being tutored by a girl on my hall because he doesn't explain the material. If you haven't had a background in stats before, DO NOT TAKE!!
This professor is so nice. His enthusiasm for teaching is evident.
Putney is a very nice guy, but a horrible teacher. Isn't very approachable if you need help and doesn't lecture! Covers very little in class and tests you on hard stuff. HEAVY homework load. If you're a whiz in algebra, you'd be all set!
Dr. Putney is a nice guy. However, he lack teaching ability. He doesnt lecture well and expects you to teach yourself the work. He assigns sooooo much homework. You have to do the homework on top of teaching yourself how to do it. This class takes up a lot of time and I do not recommend it to anyone unless you're just good at math.
Boring, doesn't teach anything useful or applicable to your homework.
Professor Putney has been my hardest teacher thus far in college. I had him for both College Algebra and Stats, both of which are my only C's. He teaches by giving example problems only. But, he does give a lot of review before exams. So, if you study hard you'll do fine.
He is the most difficult professor I've ever had. He is a nice guy. which makes it hard to stay angry at him; however, this class is ridiculous, and the work is so much. He does not teach at all (and I mean at all). Good luck. He's the only one that teaches this course!
He is really hard to learn from so be able to teach yourself with the book. Often times shows us how to do a problem on the board and he himself can't get it right. Us students have to figure out where he went wrong.
He does not teach!! you have to teach your self. Math is hard to teach your self. He doesn't have that many notes to began with! he is a bad teacher. I would not take him if possable!! oh and before every text he goes over homework so that leaves you with like half the class time to do the test.
prepare to loose your life to calculus. I spent more time on this class than on anatomy and physiology...I'll be praying for you
Horrible teaching method. He truly does expect you to read the book and just "get it". The home work is outrageous. He is a nice guy and is very enthusiastic, but that doesn't help the fact that he can't teach for beans.
Coolest guy but worst Calculus teacher ever.spends most the time going over home work and last few minute teaching. No one finishes his test on time. Take him if you have a tone of time to waste doing Homework and going to tutors 24/7.
Cool guy but worst Calculus teacher ever.spends most the time going over home work and last few minute teaching. No one finishes his test on time. Take him if you have a tone of time to waste doing Homework and going to tutors 24/7.
Horrible professor yet absolutely lovely person! Unfortunately he just doesn't teach. He expects you to teach yourself and look at the book and the book they use now is not that helpful either. He will work with you if you are not doing well, he is very accomodating but he is not the professor to take for calculus. DON'T DO IT!.
Dr.Putney is my hero. He is a brilliant professor. People are just to lazy to work hard! Yes, his class is extremely difficult and perhaps ridiculous at times but this is college people. He gives a heavy hw load of about 15-20 hours a week and his exams are very hard to finish. But... it is by no means impossible to get an A. I got one!! Work Hard!
Great as a person but horrible as a professor: he just does not teach. He's really funny but spends more time on chit-chat than on teaching. He will do like 1 problem and do all different things with it-it just doesn't work out that way. Tests-only like 1 person would finish on time-make sure you prioritize. Just work hard and learn the material.
One of the nicest guys ever, but he is an absolutely terrible prof! He assigned homework before we covered the material in class, his tests are to long, he assigns to much homework (two assignments each class), his explanations are not clear, and the textbook makes no sense. My room mate was more effective at teaching me than he was.
I understand how he expected us to finish those tests on time I was jut barely halfway done when he called time.its awful please dont take him
Really nice guy. He really is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. He does assign a lot of homework. But technically, it does help. Practice makes perfect. As long as you actually do the homework, the class is passable. But I would like it if he gave slightly less homework. Teaching wise he is average. I can usually understand his teaching
Students who complain about Dr.Putney should either drop out of college or change there major. Dr. Putney's calculus class is what a real college class should be like. Students tend to complain about Dr.Putney because of there non-existent work ethic. Grow up kids, this is college. Stop complaining! Dr.Putney is an amazing professor!!
Alright If anyone planning on taking him make sure you're stay alert, know the problems he does on board by heart (might be one problem or a few but those are your test!). You will do 3-5hrs of hw for 7 points only :) Don't fail any test (hw won't help bcuz worth only 7 points and u'l do like 10 of them!!! Hope this help :)
He was a great teacher but was pretty boring. I had him for 121 and it was really easy but i'm pretty good at math. He was well organized, very clear, and easy to understand. The thing i liked the most about him was that all of the HW was not due till the end of the semester.
HE IS A NICE GUY BUT HE FAILED OVER HALF OF MY CLASS. A GENIUS MAN BUT A HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. HE CANNOT CONVEY ANY OF THE INFORMATION HE IS TRYING TO TEACH, AND HIS EXAMS ARE HORRIBLE.
Couldn't learn a thing in his class. He makes you do the hw before going of the material, making you clueless on how to go aobut it. Tests are insanly difficult. I regret taking him and most of the class failed.
I actually enjoyed having Dr. Putney as a teacher. The class was extremely difficult, especially in the first few weeks, but he is very knowledgeable in the subject matter and was happy to answer any questions. He was hard, but fair, and it was nice to have a teacher who knew what they were talking about for once. I would recommend him.
Dr. Putney is a very sweet man. He worked with me when I was injured, he curves EVERYTHING, which made the class pretty easy. There is quite a good deal of extra credit. The large amounts of homework were a bit stressful, though.
All I can say is take at your own discretion. If its been a while since you had a algebra class its best if you know your stuff with Prof. Putney because he doesn't really care about where you are at with math, He expects you to study hard and longer hours than you want to for the class. All I can say is its hard with Nathan take with other prof.
Putney is a nice guy and will often offer hw extensions to the class as a whole but when it comes to actual teaching he is awful. He is frequently completing a problem and is called out by a student for making a mistake which he then has to spend time fixing. Yea it happens but it shouldn't happen every class.
He is a nice guy but he is very unclear with what he teaches. I I didnt learn a thing in his class because he doenst teach anything and expects us to know everything.I had to learn from youtube. DONT TAKE HIM.
Literally the worst! I would never recommend him to anyone. He's a really nice guy but definitely not teacher material! STAY AWAY!
Very unclear about what is going to be on tests. And when students asked if he could slow down and explain the again he laughed and said that it "wasn't possible for him to go any slower" He's a nice guy, but I wouldn't take his class again. If you're not very good at math DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Dr. Putney is such a nice guy, but honestly a horrible teacher. 240 is a class to teach future teachers, and all of the people in my class felt like we were completely lost the whole time! Homework is graded for accuracy, not effort. PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS. He does clicker questions throughout the whole class period and they do count!!
Professor Putney made multiple mistakes in the grading process. I'm not just talking missing a question here or there, I'm talking the difference between a letter grade in the class.
This professor does better teaching or tutoring one on one. The material he covers in class barely gives you enough background to complete the homework. Be prepared to get help or self-teach yourself. Homework is not always clear in class or on the syllabus. Dr. Putney is a great man but not a good professor.
Dr. Putney seems like a really nice person, and a good man. His teaching skills and his class on the other hand are hard. His classes barely cover the material you have online. If you are taking a math class below the level 128 be prepared for online torture at the hands of mymathlabs. Good guy, bad professor, terrible class.
He has not helped me in any way, and the work load is way too much. Do not recommend him as a teacher.
Rushes to cover all material
Tries to explain math topics simply but makes them more confusing; goes on tangents that don't even add to the understanding of topics but adds to confusion. Not consistent in collecting the homework the syllabus says is due on a certain day,and will "surprise" you by taking it one day but not the other. Does not specify what he wants from students
Dr. Putney is extremely confusing in his teaching style. He does not teach but runs through math problems as if the class already understands them. If a student has a question, he answers it in a way that makes the concept in question all the more confusing.
Dr. Putney is a nice guy, however he can not teach at all. He assigns homework before we go over the material in class and spends most of the class going over it, which leaves little time to actually go over the content for class we need to know. This is a self-taught class. If you are not great at math, I would take this class online!!
I have never had a teacher make a class so unnecessarily difficult. I had to withdraw from the class because I was afraid I would not pass it. I am now taking the exact same class here at Liberty with a different professor and I think I will finish the class with an A.
He barely teaches his students anything. All he does in class is go over homework from the last lesson that he didn't teach us. He always gets on his students for not reading the book; however, I think I would rather read nutrition labels or phonebooks than the textbook we use for that class.
I have been in advanced math classes my entire middle and high school years. I was an A/B student. After being in this class, I feel like Im not a smart person anymore and that my high school algebra classes were a joke. And it did not help that I was a commuter and its mandatory to go to the computer lab.
He knows his stuff and promotes good discussion. The class was about teaching math and he gave really good feedback and advice. From what I could tell, all of his classes involve reading and it's not really possible to get a decent grade without learning something so avoid him if you want to slack off.
Dr. Putney is a great professor. He uses the little time he is given to give a basic understanding of the lesson and go over problems that students had trouble solving. Expect lots of homework, but he is always willing to help the students who ask.
Dr. Putney gives an unnecessary amount of homework. He is the only Stats professor at LU to give written homework in addition to online homework. He refuses to acknowledge how outdated written homework is with excel formulas accessible to students in the real world. Also all his tests are written and no multiple choice. At least hes funny!
He is a nice guy but the tests can be difficult and there is online and written homework so make sure to not get behind like me. I wouldn't recommend him because the class shouldn't be this hard. He really cares but is just super hard. Takes attendance every day and also 2-10 tophat questions through class.
When you come into class, Dr. Putney does not go over how to complete an equation with detail. He never goes through a step by step process and rarely explains how to finish one. He talks too fast to keep up with in class and tends to come off a little bit condescending. He doesn't give enough material to review before the exams.
If you are able to teach yourself then you will do great in this class. Dr. Putney not only makes countless mistakes while completing problems, he doesn't explain to his students how to complete them. I've learned more from YouTube than I've learned from his class. He also assigns both online and written homework and tests are not multiple choice.
Dr. Putney seems like a great guy, but his teaching style is not the most effective. He assigns an unnecessary amount of written homework along with the online homework and takes off points for missing even one class. The biggest issue was the number of errors on his tests requiring regrading after students pointed out mistakes on his answer key.
Dr. Putney's teaching was not that effective to me, so I'd teach myself. You could easily skip this class, because the content is not hard, but don't do it because points will be deducted from attendance from missing only one class. Tests had inconsistencies and would then have to be regraded because of his miscalculations while making the test.
NOT a good teacher at all!! If you take him you will be having to do more homework than any other class and will also be teaching yourself how to do the work.
Dr. Putney is one of the worst professors I've had. I'm not a math person but I have to take MATH126 for my major. The only "teaching" he did during class was doing sample problems but he would never really explain how to do them. You are required to do both written and online homework which is very time consuming. More than half the class withdrew
Expects students to be self-taught. Will not give the proper time to finish tests, which leads to unfair test grades that do not accurately reflect knowledge. Gives around 3 hours of homework a night, be prepared to be in pain.
This professor helps us understand the concepts behind the math problems we solve, and explains the "why" behind algebraic concepts and equations.
The worst professor I have had; he is the only one at Liberty that did not exceed my expectations though. Gave no helpful feedback even during office hours and students constantly had to correct his calculations during lecture. Did not show concern for student grades and over half the class withdrew by the midterm.
Very clear expectations. Lots of homework but thats standard for a math class. He communicated well. The 2 times I reached out he got back to me within 24 hours.
Do not take this professor. I have seen too many students who have been striped of a good GPA because of this one professor. Do not take him. There are plenty of other options or even take this class online. But do not take this professor.
Lots of homework and doesnt really explain through work enough for everyone to understand. Tough grader. Lot of people failed test.
Putney is the WORST math teacher. Do NOT take his class. Though he is a nice christian man, his teaching is confusing and frustrating. I had to get tutored four times a week and still couldn't keep up with the work load and insanely hard concepts. Things that weren't even taught were on the tests. Never again will I suffer the pain of his class.
Unless you have 12-15 spare hours per week that you would like to spend plowing through the plethora of busy work this professor gives, do not take this class. After taking pre-calc and calc with an A in high school, this gen-ed still consumed more time than my 200 and 300 level courses. Do not take this abhorrent and ignorant professor's course.
This professor barely taught his course work. There was about 15-20 hours of homework each week leaving no room for other courses. Some of the homework he did not even go over in class so we are left stranded to figure out these complex problems on our own. This is coming from a guy who got As in Algebra all throughout highschool.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. You are expected to do 60-90 algebra problems every night. There is only three tests, which make it hard to keep a good grade. He is not very understanding of extending circumstances.
Liberty must address its math department and examine the possibility of adding new professors. Dr. Putney, while a fine man, forced students to self-teach a lot of difficult material, and while the repetition did instill the material, it was due to student work, not professor ability. Unfortunately he is the only option for this class provided.
This teacher was awful. The course itself wasn't hard. However, this teacher assigned unnecessary amounts of homework in one week (we had over two hundred problems plus tests). His grading was wack and feedback was non-existent. We, students, corrected his classwork many times and he could not stay on topic during class.
Professor Putney seems like he would be a great guy to hang around outside of class, but he cannot teach mathematics to save his life. He is the only college algebra teacher to enforce homework from the textbook and a lot of the questions on tests weren't taught in class. Expect a lot of homework and the dumb TopHat participation questions.
Doesn't necessarily teach more than we have to teach ourselves and he just grades us on how much we know.
One of the worst professors at Liberty. Sweet man, students get stripped of their good GPA because of the workload. You do more work than what is graded. Work isn't hard, but the exams cover material that is not covered in class. Class size at the beginning of the semester filled the room, and ended with 9. Avoid taking a class with this professor.
He is a very nice professor and is always available outside class. It is a tough course though and I would highly recommend taking college algebra before it. His exams are very tough and require you to be 100% proficient with the material. There is a lot of homework given in the course, so if you fall behind it is very hard to catch up.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS I DONT CARE WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO! Dr. Putney is the most difficult teacher/class I've had my entire life. He often made snide comments/was not the least bit encouraging towards students. He does not give enough time to finish exams, which made up a lot of the grade. gives out SO much hw (he collects it) you will be working 24/7.
Mr. Putney would often make fun of students who didn't get the answer right. On top of that this teacher gave WAY TOO MUCH homework only for him to only grade a few and not actually check if it was correct. With Tests they're 3-5 pages, quizzes and HW not graded correctly, and doesn't like when people try to correct him for his wrongs. like grades!
Ridiculously unclear grading criteria. I taught myself every concept and did hours upon hours of online homework and book work, only to have the tests look nothing like the homework. I had a 68/69 all semester, and I told him I was struggling getting my grade up and I'm pretty sure he bumped it up so I could pass. So be nice to him
Terrible professor, does not teach you anything. You have to do all the work on your own and teach yourself all the concepts. He gives a TON of homework problems and does not explain how to do anything. Would NOT recommend this professor. When you ask him a question he belittles you and does not offer help.
Nice guy. Terrible Prof. The most homework I've ever had in my life, and you'll have to teach yourself the majority of the content. Requires online and written homework to be done weekly. Never tells you when he's going to collect papers. He's pretty nice when it comes to grading tests, but will make fun of groups who don't do well in his class.
TAKE THE ONLINE VERSION. Everyone told me not to take his class but I thought I didn’t have any other options besides his in person class. As soon as a switched to online everything became so much easier. He is a very rude man and he still teaches online but you have little interaction this way. I have an A now, and I am very bad at math
Dr. Putney is one of the worst math professors I have ever had. He gives hours of online and paper hw from the textbook which he never states which one's he is going to collect and actually grade so you end up doing half of it for nothing. His exams are also pretty difficult and the hw doesn't really prepare you for them. Doesn't know how to teach!
He gives a lot of weekly homework, and is hard to follow his lectures
This professor definitely knew what he was talking about, but he is terrible at teaching the materials. This course can easily be taken online, and I definitely recommend it. He expected you to work on the online problems as well as the multiples of five in each section. Way too much work is expected for his class. Tests were very difficult.
Worst professor I have taken in four years of college Pros: gracious with partial credit, appreciates students going to office hours, and is knowledgeable Cons: would lecture for 5 min every class and go over previous hwk the rest, impossible tests (HIGHEST grade for one exam was 30%), and made fun of students in his lower math class Do not take
I have taken calculus and graduated high school with a 4.2 GPA, but find myself up until 1am-3am trying to get all of the work done. Putney is really nice, just gives out too much homework. For science majors, specifically in BIO 224 or CHEM 121, I would not recommend taking this in person with him - you will get overwhelmed with the amount of work
He does not teach well and needs to give out less homework!
Dr. Putney had to curve every single exam. There were weeks I would spend almost 15 hours on just the homework and he would randomly collect it so you always had to have all of it on hand. The reason he doesn't get a 1 though, is that he was very helpful in his office hours and was good at helping you understand in a one-on-one context.
I'm sure that you've spent enough time reading the poor reviews for this professor. Everyone here is correct. The large majority of the class never finishes the full test. You will be teaching yourself, which isn't the worst thing, but you'll have to waste a ton time on worthless homework problems. Very nice guy, but just bad professor.
He does not teach all the material that is on your homework and quizzes. The amount of work that is expected to be due by each class, personally to me, was outrageous. He is a good guy, but I do not recommend taking this course if you don't want to be spending hours a night working on math homework.
gave so much homework and surprise collected one of the homeworks so I dropped the class in the first week because I didn't have enough time to finish all my other more important class work. I suggest taking college algebra on sofia instead because this class is not it.
I'll be totally honest, I dropped his class after the first day. I struggle with math already and signed up for his class because of my mom, but the first day he not only gave us a pop quiz but also assigned 76 problems to do by the next class (Tues/Thurs) which sent me into a panic attack. Just take the courses online if you need to.
Professor Putney is a hard but good professor. He knows the material well and is available outside of class to help with homework and test review. If you put in the work and go to his office hours when you need extra help, you will do well in his class. You get out of his class what you put into it.
Lots of Homework
This professor speaks down to people and indirectly calls out students during class and proceeds to make unfunny jokes about how they should not have a high school diploma because they do not know a certain topic. And even though his office hours are helpful, they're only helpful when he shows up on time. Great guy, just not a good professor.
Dr. Putney, though very knowledgable, is not a good professor. He constantly makes discouraging, unnecessary comments about students throughout the class times. If you read the sections before class and do not take any other classes, you might be able to get some of the homework done.
I took this class my first semester of college. He gave out so much homework but only collected some (it was all graded for accuracy), and he only ever got through 2 practice problems in a 50 minute period. This class should not have been as hard as it was, it was an algebra class. I have been scared to take math at Liberty since.
Professor Putney gave way too much homework and I couldn't keep up with it. I'm talking multiple hours each day of hard math, while having other classes to study for as well. He is also very rude with students and does not care for them like other professors. He messes up his teaching and has to be corrected by students multiple times a class.
There is a lot of Homework!! Get behind on homework you won't catch back up. If you miss a class you won't pass! You must read the section before each class and also do boatloads of homework that may or may not be picked up. Just don't take this class
He has lot's of homework and he's class is not well organized at all
Lots of homework that takes up 6-7 hours per week and counts for NOTHING. Tests are hard and doesn't explain what's on there.
Be ready to teach yourself the material
This class has a heavy workload with lots of homework that's time-consuming but not very helpful. While the professor is knowledgeable, the teaching style and organization could use improvement. I found Unstuckstudy and the free textbook more useful for studying.
One of the worst professors you could possibly take. Got an A because I already understood the topics, that wasn't the case for most of the people in class. If you're good a math and can easily understand it then you should be fine in the class, if not then do not take Putney at all. Also close to 200 problems of homework each week
He has been teaching for way too long. Does not teach you but expects you to have an understanding of the sections prior to lecture then only does practice problems in class. He goes over the problems so fast you don't have time to understand what he is doing. He is a sweet guy but might be time to give up teaching.
Took this my first semester in college, first class I ever failed. Never been a math person but I've never had this hard of a time in algebra. Went over maybe 2 problems every class end expected us to complete roughly 50 problems in the textbook for homework, and would get upset when people weren't grasping the concept. Nice guy, horrible teacher.
Mr. Putney often makes fun of students who don't get the answer right, creating a humiliating and intimidating environment for them. Mr. Putney frequently shames students with disabilities in front of the class, which as myself experienced that. Mr. Putney often deducts points from students' grades without justification. Physical & Digital homework
Never liniment.
Dropped DAY OF class. I walked in and he seemed kinda fun and chill at first, but then he kept talking about buying stuff and a subscription for his class, it was ridiculous. I had just spent my money on TopHat so I told him I couldn't pay and he told me that I could do the 2 week trial and then after I would have to pay, if I didn't, I would fail.
so confused
Please don't take him he is really hard.
Very homework heavy, which helps learn the material well but is still a lot. I didn't know about a big assignment that was due so I went to office hours, he was very kind and reset the date for me.
Literally the kindest professor ever!
He is a very kind person, but sometimes he did kind of call out students on mistakes which can be embarrassing. Also, he is too fast to keep up with sometimes and assigns way too much work. If you don't stay on track, you will be behind all semester. he also just made things hard to understand. I will never take his class again
Worst professor at Liberty. AT LEAST 200 math problems every day. Expected us to teach all the material to ourselves and didn't teach us anything during class. Harsh grader. He was rude and made rude comments to/about a deaf girl and her interpreter during class. Do not take his class if you want to have time for any other classes you are taking.
