His lectures were extremely interesting. He made history fun and exciting to learn. He has three reading response assignments throughout the course. Plus two exams. His tests are very demanding, no multiple choice, only fill in the blanks of terms, and an essay. He's a challenging professor, but you walk away from his class with so much knowledge.
Test are essay but he's interested in hearing opinion as much as facts, so he's not hard on grades.
Good guy. Come to class and plan on going right up until the end. No book, little homework, 2 tests.
He was a really good teacher, lots of interesting things learned. The test are all open note, so if you've been to class and taken good notes you will do well. The papers you have to right are few and far between but will take a little some effort for a good grade. The lectures are very well done but he is very liberal, so be prepared.
One test and One final both of which are open notes. Only 3 papers only have to be 2-3 pages double spaced. He is really funny, its surprising how easy the class is for how much you learn. I have learned more about history in this class than I ever knew and it was really easy to get an A. You must take him, you wont regret it.
It was a lecture type class. Almost everything he said was on the tests. You could use your notes on the test, which was nice, except I personally am not the greatest note taker. Wasn't to bad overall though, and I would take it again.
This professor is an awesome professor. He is really funny and makes fun of history and dumb people all the time. You only have a mid-term and a final for tests, but the tests are super duper hard! You better get ready to take notes like no other class before.
He's a funny very good professor he has recorded lectures you can hear and usually if you miss a day you can go back and listen to his recordings he is very understandable if you don't understand he can tell right away and can make it easier for the ones who don't understand no textbook needed and it's way better when theirs no textbook
The class is interesting, and Professor Rives is very knowledgeable. However, all you do is take notes. There is almost no student/teacher interaction. He will stand up in front of the class the talk the entire time. There are only two tests, you can have your notes but the questions are extremely difficult to answer even with your notes.
Get ready to take a ton of notes. Only 2 tests, can take notes with you. The questions are tough though. All lectures are recorded so you can watch them live from home or recorded later. He tends to go a little fast, it's hard to write down everything he says. But as long as you take good notes you should be fine. No textbook. He tries to be funny!
He is such a nice guy and so willing to help you if you are willing to learn. There are only two test and they are open notes. There are a few readings quizzes that he gives the answers to you in class. There are a lot of notes if you are lazy person, average notes if you put some effort in. Its not that hard to get an A. Also offers extra credit.
If you only take one history class in your life, take this one! Inspirational. Clear. Informative. Easy. Wants to inspire not fail you. GOOD NOTES mandatory for A. Classes recorded for review. Every test question is in lecture so write/TYPE(!!) fast 2 tests. 6 assignments (answers in class). extra credit No book -printer&ink helpful
Professor Rives was my favorite history teacher I've had. His exams are tricky but not necessarily hard, so expect to take very detailed notes during his lectures. If you can merely show up and do that, you will pass no problem. He is very enthusiastic and funny so his lectures are entertaining. There is also plenty of extra credit to get an A.
I recomend taking his class best professor out their he will give u lots of extra credit . Get ready to take lots of quizzes every week that will help you alot with your upcoming exams. He is fun and will explain things to you very well. Make sure you take lots of notes. other than that your all set.
He makes this class interesting. His assignments are easy if you are there in class because he gives you the answers you need for the assignments. He is a cool teacher and you will pass if you take good notes and pay attention.
Show up and you'll pass. Tests can be kind of tricky (like 2 of the answers seem right) He gives you the answers in class to the readings. Only 2tests both 50questions and only 6readings (gives answers in class)
He made the hardest class in the history department worthwhile: very kind in feedback, with specific examples on what you have done well, and what could be better for your thesis paper, and was willing to meet with you outside of class. You do have to work for your grade, but you learn so much in the process. His humor made boring times worthwhile.
Dr. Rives made American history much more interesting. He doesn't use a textbook at all and provides all of his powerpoints on canvas if you need. He lets you take as many notes into the exams as needed, but if you don't go to class, it will be much more difficult to pass the class.
Professor Rives is A FANTASTIC teacher. You can take this class from multiple locations and you watch a recording, later uploaded (Its nice if you need to miss class and catch up on the lecture) He has 4 exams and is VERY clear about what is on the exams and he lets you bring any notes you want to test! Watch the lectures, take good notes, Easy A!
There are 4 exams, 1 extra credit paper, and 6 reading question assignments - all of these are SUPER easy if you just go to class. He allows you to take ALL notes, including the powerpoint slides into the tests so that is wonderful, and there are 6 readings but he goes over the question and answers for those in class.
Dr. Rives is one of the best history professors I've ever had. The lectures are wildly animated, neutral(fact driven), meaningful, and very articulate. He's a funny guy so the lectures are always interesting. Very inspiring!
This was a great class. There is no text book for this class. I printed out his slides and made notes right on the slides. He lets you take as many notes as you want in for the tests. His lectures were fun, never boring.
This class is the hardest class that history majors will go through due to the amount of writing you have to do. However, Dr. Rives helps you through it and makes it bearable. He doesn't mess around but he wants to make it as easy as he can for you while still making you do your best.
Dr. Rives is a great professor that creates a great learning environment. His lectures are interesting and really help out on the tests if you take good notes. Notes are allowed in the testing center, so use them!
Probably the best professor I have ever had with the best class I've ever had. He has no books you have to buy. He has 6 homework assignments over the semester that take 1 hour a piece if you are smart. YOU CAN USE YOUR NOTES FOR THE EXAM. He goes over all the material in class. He is good in his lectures and pretty funny. I LOVED HIM.
4 exams throughout the semester. 6 reading quizzes and the lowest one gets dropped. The exams are open note. He does record lectures and posts them a week before exams open but I would still recommend going to class, everything is just easier that way.
He is very clear about what you will be tested on and gives great feedback. Very caring and takes the time to get to know everyones names.
Attendance is absolutely necessary, unless you want to listen to his lectures that he posts the week before the exam. Rives is a wonderful professor, and the best history prof I've ever had! I hate history, but he makes it so interesting. I loved this class. Can take all notes into exams
Amazing professor ! I could have done better but i learned a lot of great things while in his class. Be ready to take lots of notes its very important and pay attention because he gives out the answers. Do your best and you will pass i promise you. He gives out extra credit he would want you to pass. Good luck and You will do great.
Prof. Rives makes history understandable and uses class time wisely! Allows notes on the 4 exams, even printed slides. There are 6 reading assignments, which he answers in class, and the lowest gets dropped! Offers an extra credit paper to bump up your grade 5%. He posts helpful study stuff (recordings, powerpoints, and review ?s). Take from him!!!
I went to this class 3 times the whole semester. Dr. Rives posts all of his lectures online before the test, so attendance is not necessary. No book either. The 4 tests are made up of lectures, and 6 reading assignments he gives you all the answers in class. I had to take notes word for word to do well on his tests (they are tricky). Solid choice.
You NEED to take History 1700 from Professor Rives. There is only 4 exams, no final or midterm also 6 readings with questions but he goes over the answers in class You can take any and all of your note, sides, and reading questions into the exam. I do not like history but enjoyed his lectures and actually learned. TAKE HIM, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
Gave great lectures that were politically unbiased and funny at times. Tests are the majority of your grade, but are pretty easy if you pay attention in the lectures.
Go to class and take notes of the lecture and you'll get an A. He lets you bring notes and the lecture slides into the test which helps, but much of it in the test can be remember. Can maybe miss a couple times and still do good on the tests.
OH MY GOODNESS take this class! He's amazing! He tells history like a story (and an interesting one to boot). He has 6 Reading Questions and they are SO easy if you just read the material. His tests make you think, but you can bring notes into the tests (saved my butt a few times). He's a top-notch professor. Show up to class! Trust me.
History was never really clear to me, but the way Rives presents his lectures give you all the context you need to understand. I loved this class and this professor. I might consider taking another History lecture just because he was that great. I had to wait 3 hrs inbetween class but it was well worth attending. The class really made me think.
All lecture, fairly entertaining. You can use ALL your notes for tests. Other assignmentsreadings with questions to answer--bi-weekly. However, Dr. Rives won't work with you. He doesn't accept late work. I misread ONE date, turned in a late assignment, and he gave me NO credit, which dropped me from an A to a B+. With extra credit I got an A-.
I would no recommend this professor. There is no way to get information form previous classes besides asking someone in the class for the notes that day. He NEVER repeats himself and says his power points are only visual aid, and with him never repeating himself it makes it very hard to catch the information he wants you to know.
Rives was the best prof I could have hoped for going into my first class on my first day of university. His lectures are phenomenally descriptive and real and he brought the story of American civilization to life for me. Amazing lectures, very well-spoken and succinct. Has that wonderful gift to make you excited and eager to learn: would take again
Although class isn't mandatory, it is the best way to get notes. He posts the slides online but mentions a lot of information in class that you won't get off the slides. The tests are open note so it benefits to have all the notes possible. There are 5 other assignments due based on readings but he goes over the answers in class before they're due.
I loved Rives' class. It was so interesting. Take good notes, because you're allowed to use notes on the test. Highly recommend.
Take this class from Professor Rives! This is an easy A class and Rives really does make the class material interesting and engaging, and he's really funny. There are several readings and short papers, his powerpoints are available to print and he lets you take your notes into the tests. Take notes, show up and you will do great.
He actually makes lectures interesting. All you have to do is show up, listen, and write good notes and you have an easy A. He has reading questions bi-weekly but answers all the question in his lectures and lets you take as many notes as you want in tests. This was my 2nd time taking this course and was by far the easiest class of my semester
I think he often grades based on his own opinion rather than the strength of an argument. I could write a really sound argument, using direct quotations and let the writing center edit it for me and he would still dock me 1 or 2 points and say something like "I don't think they were that severe in their opinions". He wants you to think he's smart.
He is an amazing professor! His lectures are very interesting and funny. He gives 4 exams through the semester, has readings bi-weekly, gives extra credit, and no text book needed. He posts the pp online, gives great feedback, and has the readings posted online. Highly recommend!!
ONLINE: Took this course for a generals requirement. I was very surprised at the amount of time we were expected to spend on coursework for just one class. Assignments were easy, exams were very difficult. Not an easy class.
1 deduction because there are a lot of videos, but it's very detailed and he makes it much more interesting, you will learn so much more about history in this class, and surprisingly I enjoyed learning about it. I am still not a fan of history but if I had to take it again this is the only professor I would recommend, and he is very funny and kind.
You just sit there and watch videos on repeat while doing 3 readings per month. The tests are very hard, it's important to take very good notes. I think he just makes the tests hard because we are allowed to bring in notes.
There is at least 3 hours of lectures per chapter which he tries to make entertaining. His tests let you have notes but they are extremely hard if you haven't taken history in a while. He is super test heavy but does have RQ's and you have to record yourself talking about a topic learned in the unit.
Class consists of 4 exams, 2 question write-ups for each of the exams, 3 min video of what you learned in the unit and a signature assignment at the end. Unit lectures are LONG, but he keeps them interesting! He lets us take notes into the exam, make sure you understand concepts and take good notes because tests can be tricky! Awesome professor!
Nathan Rives made History very interesting, he did not give a boring lecture. His tests were short but if you don't pay attention and take notes it will be a lot harder to pass the class. He has few assignments ( 5 review question assignments, 4 tests, and a 300 word finial). Overall, he is a good teacher and I enjoyed his class.
Honestly I tried my best in this ONLINE class. I am a student who receives A's in physiology. He is the HARDEST grader ever. No matter what I turned in he had to dock points. His class is put together with videos, and reading modules and his tests are HARD. OPEN BOOK AND HARD. He words his questions HORRIBLE. "Which answer seems more correct"
I ended up taking history with him and the second I started watching his videos I feel in love with the way he tells history. His class is super easy and fun there is some assignments and 4 exams, and notes are allowed in the exam.
Great teacher but be prepared for a TON of lectures/reading/note-taking. Great that you can use notes on tests but you need REALLY good notes. Enjoyed the class but would have struggled if I had very many other classes. Not hard, just lots and lots of video lectures and papers to read. Stay on top of it each week or you'll be in trouble.
Dr. Rives cares and I would recommend him to anyone.
Best Professor Ive ever had. Best lectures. Lecture heavy. Open notes on all 4 tests. No essays. Extremely simple assignments. This course is an absolute lay up if you watch the lectures. Dr. Rives is sharp and funny and knows what hes taking about. Breath of fresh air. THIS IS A MUST TAKE from Rives.
Professor Rives was such a great professor. His lectures are interesting and very descriptive. The exams are majority of the grade, but if you take good notes it shouldn't be a problem. He is easily accessible, and always happy to help. He wants his students to succeed. If you put in the work, you will more than certainly pass his class.
Professor Rives is an outstanding professor, one of the best in the history department. His lectures are fantastic and engaging. He is a tough grader, though he provides ample feedback on papers to help you improve. He is sympathetic to his students' problems. Midterm and Final are take-home papers quite long and pretty difficult but still doable.
Professor Rives is a phenomenal professor. This class is 98% lectures/tests. There is not a lot of homework so if you're a bad test taker this may not be the best option for you. Regardless, Rives works hard to help each student succeed. This was a great history class. I learned so much this semester! .
Dr. Rives gives great, engaging lectures. I learned so much even though the class was incredibly fast paced. There are a lot of lectures, but take tons of notes and print off the slides for the open note exams. He can be a picky grader but his grading rubric is very clear. The exam questions came be worded funny so take your time to read them well.
Main focus is lectures and taking notes. If you take good notes then you'll do fine on exams. Class is set into four sections with multiple lectures that are engaging and interesting. Then you have two readings with questions and one video assignment per section. I typically struggle in history classes but this was the best I have experienced.
Dr. Rives is an amazing professor. He tells history the way it happened and doesn't sugarcoat the truth. He is a bit of a tough grader but gives helpful feedback so you know how to improve your grade next time around. He is very understanding and willing to help in any way possible!
Heavy and scripted lectures. Not always the most interesting, but you can tell he likes what he does. Tests are sometimes tough, but you're allowed to use notes. Gives good feedback on graded assignments. Takes a while to access outside of class, but is very understanding if you have a valid reason to miss class.
I have had Dr. Rives for both history 2700 and 2710. I have greatly enjoyed his classes and especially his lectures. I think there could be a daunting workload especially if you are not used to writing papers. However, it is reasonable for the class. I think it would be a wasted opportunity not to take a class from him! Highly recommended.
He was very nice and really forgiving too on grading. Basically just wants to see that you at least skimmed over the materials. He didnt make it clear that you have to read all materials even if you dont pick it for assignment which caused some points lost the first time so beware. Other then that, easy class. I barely put effort in and got a B
Professor Rives is a fast talker and does not use a book. The exams are based on his lectures, so make sure you take very detailed notes. I had to re-listen to the lectures, after class, to get sufficient notes. I believe this class would have been way more enjoyable if there would have been a book. Not a strong note taker? Do not take his class!
I really enjoyed taking Dr. Rives for this class. The online class is somewhat self paced with only due dates for tests and even those aren't very strict. The tests are open note so if you watch the lectures and answer the guided questions provided you will get a good grade. I found him to be hilarious and the topics he covered were interesting.
Dr. Rives has a very fun way of teaching history where you actually get some insight without worrying about dates or people's names. It is extremely fun, the tests are open note and slightly comprehensive but pretty easy. He is also a laid-back and chill dude. 10/10 choice, Totally recommend it.
Professor Rives is a tough grader, accepts no extra credit and doesn't allow any redos whatsoever regardless of your situation, and always docked points for any little thing. On a positive note, he will go over missed test questions with you at your request.
The course is set up into four units. They each contain lectures (interesting and quite entertaining), reading questions on historical documents and an exam. Rives gives you great feedback on reading questions and you can use your notes from the lectures on your exams! One of my favorite classes I have taken online. Would highly recommend!
The only thing I would change about this class would be having due dates to watch the lecture videos by so that everything isn't left until the last minute, because it can get overwhelming. But the lectures were easy to understand, but there are a lot of them. Exams for every unit and at least 2 papers per unit. Just don't procrastinate;)
Dr. Rives is one of the best professors I have ever had the pleasure of taking a class from. He is caring and willing to work with you to help you succeed. His lectures are easy to understand and they also cover all of the material you need for the exams. He can be a tough grader at times but his feedback is useful and does not seem unfair.
Professor Rives always has super interesting lectures. His exams were open book, so super easy to get an A if you take notes in class. If you take this class make sure to turn in all assignments on time, and absolutely NEVER miss a test- you will get a 0 and he will not allow you to retake or resubmit for partial credit.
I loved this teacher! He is super helpful outside of class and is willing to meet with you to discuss topics you are needing help with! I loved his lecture videos, and loved that tests were open book/open notes. Would definitely take again if I had the chance.
This guy is seriously awesome. The online lecture videos interesting and to the point. If you take good notes of the lectures then it's easy to get a good grade. He relates things to the present day and doesn't push opinions. He makes learning History fun. Best History class I've ever had and usually History is a tough subject for me.
In my four years at Weber State, Dr. Rives was by far the best lecturer I've ever had. His feedback on papers is helpful for improvement. His tests were also open notes, so if you show up to lecture and take good notes, scoring well in the class is very doable.10/10 cannot recommend his courses enough
One of the best teachers i have had. in his lectures he gives a lot of detail and information. If you miss class he will not hound you about it and gives you his slides you can use during his test. Extremely nice and understanding if i could take every class with him i would. He rarely gives 100% on assignments but all of his critiques he'll note
This class is such a pain. The assignments are all due at the end of each unit in one large chunk, there's 2 writing assignments, the test, and a short video you have to make on what you learned. There are probably more than 100 short lecture clips to watch on your own, they're easy to forget about and its best to spread them out over time.
The way his online class was set up was super easy to navigate and understand. It consisted of four units with each having their own reading assignments (you only had to do two) which weren't very hard and came with a video explaining how to do them, a short summary video of yourself about what you've learned, and an open note test.
Dr. Rives is a great professor. He gives great feedback on assignments and his lectures are pretty good. Take good notes and you'll do good on the exams. One thing about taking this class online is that all the due dates were on the same day (for each unit). So if you're a procrastinator like me, keep that in mind. Overall great professor 10/10
He was amazing teacher, I enjoyed learning about history from him. He made lectures bearable and fun. If you study a decent amount of time you will do well with the straight forward tests. Would definitely recommend to anyone.
This online History course is a lot of work. Each Module had at least 40 pages of notes. Lectures are good, but grading scale is harsh. A 93 or below is an A-. Test percentage is too high when added with the other assignments in class, and there are minimal points for the semester. Reading responses require a lot of time and only worth 10 points.
Great guy! His lectures are some of the best I've ever seen online, he is very passionate about the subject. He presents videos in small, bite-sized pieces. There is reading mixed in with the lectures but it's fast. If you just pay attention and take notes (i took notes on the slides) then you'll be fine for the exams and assignments.
TAKE HIS CLASS. 4 units 1 month to complete ea., FOR EACH UNIT 4 chpt , mini lectures , 2 requ readings with 5 simple questions to answer, 1 2min video with what you leaned for the unit , 1 test and are able to use notes plus NO FINAL . Gives you everything to succeed.
Prof. Rives, has a lot of work to do in classes. Lectures are good! Feed back is awesome! Pay attention to the lectures! I would take again!!
Difficulty is only a 5/5 because 4990 is a senior capstone course. Dr. Rives does an exemplary job in supporting students in their weak areas and in encouraging them on the things they're doing well. I only took this class with him, but I am certain he would be extremely helpful and interesting in classes at any level.
I dreaded taking History. This class was put together so well. Yes it has alot of work, which is the only reason for a 4/5 difficulty. You need time to watch all the videos, do the readings and then a handful of assignments. Its mostly TIME, not being brilliant. Rives is excellent at making what he teaches interesting. Allows notes, great feedback
Amazing teacher who obviously cares about history and his students but this class is filled with a TON of lecture videos and readings. You basically have to write everything he says down if you want to do well on the tests (open note but hard). He has 2 writing assignments, exam, plus a video you have each unit. If you like history would recommend
One of the best online teachers I have taken a class with. You can tell he puts a lot of effort in his lectures and material. Each unit does have a lot of components to them so be prepared to spend a few hours on each one. However, the assignments are relatively easy to get through, his lectures are engaging, and overall a really fun class!
