UMass needs to hire more professors like Schnarr. Orgo isn't easy, but this guy takes the time to make sure everyone understands a topic before he moves on. He's fair, has a sense of humor, and actually cares about his students.Do yourself a favor and arrange your schedule around his lecture.
Subject is really hard, make sure you go to class and read the book, but amazing teacher. Very fair with grading and really interested in helping students do good in class and understand the materials. He made sure to give us practice exams and even gave us short answer questions before the exam for even more practice. Only wish he was teaching 262
Difficult subject matter and honestly I still don't care for it. However, Professor Schnarr was awesome and extremely helpful. Very fair grader and understanding of the level of difficulty of the class. Wish he was teaching Organic 262 next semester!
Difficult class but he makes it tolerable. Very fair and will always answer any questions you have. Scales all the tests and makes orgo less scary. Also, he kinda looks like a less sexy Gerard Butler but drinks weird sodas. Nice guy, tolerable class.
Very clear, understandable, helpful, cares about helping the student learn what is difficult material.
Schnarr was a practical teacher--picked out what was actually used nowadays in orgo and tought that. Understood that not everyone is a chem major, but at the same time could use some more clarity. Sometimes he rushed, as most teachers do. You need to study a lot for tests, obviously. Cool guy. Wish I put in some more effort...
Practical teacher--picked out what is actually used in chemistry nowadays to teach. Sometimes rushed slides, as many teachers do. Understood everybody isn't an orgo major and tought that way. Still could've been a little more clear. You have to study really well for the tests, obviously.
Very difficult class but I totally recommend Schnarr. Though he did not prepare us as well for exams as he did in orgo one, I still enjoyed the class very much. You need to put in the effort outside of class. He is willing to help you but you need to ask him specifics. I recommend this class if you like organic chemistry. Very smart guy.
Awesome guy. Really knows his organic chemistry. Don't be afraid to ask him questions because he is very approachable. If you follow his instructions well, you will do alright in the class.
He was a great guy, but his teaching left a little to be desired. He severely under-taught, so even the book didn't help in his class. But to be fair, he was very approachable and reasonable and always willing to answer questions.
Schnarr is great, he's always willing to meet with students to help, even last-minute (although I wouldn't recommend this). He provides practice exams and materials that are great study guides, and he works hard to be clear and accurate. My one recommendation is to go to class, he's way more clear than the book.
Always willing to help outside of class to clear up points of confusion. Exams were fair if you paid attention in class and studied a bit.
Schnarr is Schnarrly! He's super helpful, always available outside of class, and does everything he can to make sure students understand and even enjoy organic chemistry. He is incredibly knowledgeable and rarely uses notes in class. Take orgo with Schnarr is possible!
Nathan is a pretty cool guy, and an even better professor. His class is Ok in terms of difficulty, but it can be made hard if you skip lectures and the readings. If you're caught up, this class shouldn't give you too much trouble.
I retook this class after I received a C- last time. I thought I would do better, but I got behind on lectures and the readings again, and did even worse this year. Schnarr is a great professor and a really cool guy. Just be prepared to work hard in this class.
Schnarr's hilarious. His lectures are really clear, he does multiple examples, he answers everyone's questions, his pacing is spot on, he's very kind, and really helpful at office hours. He tells you exactly what he'll test you on. His online quizzes help prep you for the exams. hardest part of class was OWL homework (you have lots of time though).
Schnarr is by far one of the best professors I have had at UMASS. He cares about all of his students and is there to clear points of confusion as many times as you need. DO THE OWLS that was my biggest mistake, this is probably the worst part of the class. PS: eye candy, great motivation to go to class.
Before taking orgo I was very nervous because I'd heard how hard the class was but Prof Schnarr actually made me want to learn the material. He wants his students to learn and to succeed and is also really attractive so that made me want to go to class. The exams were challenging but fair for the most part. I wish he was teaching 262.
He's explains the concepts very clearly and the exams are not too hard. The take home portion of the exam can be very difficult though.
Ok I really liked Orgo- it's very spatial and there's no math whatsoever. Schnarr is really great and sometimes he wears this cute hat. He's really helpful and helps everyone understand the material, and he explains that he isn't good at some of the things either. I wish he taught Orgo 2!
good professor, funny, and fair. Can't get much better
I'm in the class right now and I'm really liking it - both exams taken so far are online and only 22 questions, so make sure you know what you're doing! Make use of office hours and SI sessions. I love Schnarr, he's a great, practical person and a refreshing kind of professor.
He is the best professor of my Sophomore year. Explains everything very well. Super nice. Very knowledgeable. Made Orgo very interesting and fun. Wish I had him for Orgo 2 as well. However, I think the we learned a bit less than a normal Orgo class. If youre interested, you can do more on your own.
best orgo teacher ever. i was so scared of this subject but he made it so clear it was amazing. you need to go to class and do the practice quizzes (the exams are like exactly the same) but if you put in the effort it won't be as bad as you expect. i wish he was teaching 262.
He is a great professor. At the beginning of the course it seems really easy but still dont skip class. He explains somethings in class that arent in the textbook nor homework then slides them into the exam. Never procastinate with owls. If not they will be the death of you. Going to his office hours cleared up my confusions. I had to work for my A
The tests are very hard, especially the final was impossible. You need to know the material inside and out. The good thing is that he is so helpful and clear that you can definitely do it and you will learn a lot. He also understands that the tests are hard and that's why he gives homework to bump your grade and scales a little.
I think for the most part he explains material well, which is really important for a class like orgo. Understanding and funny. Go to class even if its not mandatory. Lots of owls though, so budget your time. Exams are similar to practice exams, but you really do need to know the material, but it's really not as bad as I thought it would be! Curves.
Highly recommend! Lectures are long and boring. Hard to follow because material is difficult however, he takes his time. Owl HW will help you practice what you learned in class. Gives practice exam almost identical to exam, so study the material covered on it! SI Sessions were crucial for me to get an A-! He gives a generous scale on the grade!
Brilliant professor. He makes the most intimidating class not completely awful. He truly cares for his students and want them all to do well. He gives a generous curve at the end of the semester but if you do all the OWLs and study for his exams you'll do good in his class.
Prof Schnarr is an amazing lecturer who really cares for his students and somehow makes the impossible understandable. He's super friendly and helpful both in lecture and during his office hours and he's the most patient professor I've ever had - he'll take everyone's questions during class, even if it's already been asked. He's a really great guy.
Prof Schnarr is one of the best professors I have ever had. He made orgo easy to understand and lectures were so helpful. I would take whatever class I could with him.
TAKE ORGO 1 WITH SCHNARR!!!!!!! He is the fairest orgo professor and he helps you so much!!! Nicest freaking guy :)
Organic chemistry is hard, but Prof. Schnarr is knowledgeable, funny, and a good teacher which makes it much more bearable. You will need to study a lot, but it's not impossible get a good grade.
Schnarr is an amazing teacher, probably one of the best chem professors I've had so far. He makes a tedious subject as simple as he can all the while making class entertaining to go to. Put in the work and you'll get the grade you want. Tests are fair and straightforward as long as you studied hard. Expect to memorize a lot, that's Orgo for you.
Amazing professor definitely worth the class. Orgo 250 is only offered in the spring but the smaller class makes it much easier. If you have to do Chem 112 and Orgo, do Orgo first! Took it freshman year he helped me understand concepts I didn't get in Chem 111.
Schnarr is definitely the one to take for Orgo. He was extremely clear in class and makes very confusing and dry material easier to understand. Always gives practice exams before exams and they count for credit but you can easily get an A on them to boost your overall grade. He is the only prof I went to office hours for because he is so helpful!
He is a good professor. Orgo is a difficult subject but he does his best to make it intuitive for the class. Not always the clearest during lecture, but if you ask questions he explains the material well.
Professor Schnarr is a patient professor I've ever seen. He will be willing to stopping at the any point if you have problems with the concept. We will have the practice quiz before the exam, and the exam is similar to the quiz. Organic Chem is hard, but no worries, professor Schnarr is always ready to answer your questions in clear way!
Professor schnarr is a great teacher and a very humble person. Orgo is difficult but he is able to break it down and make it a little bit simpler. The owl homework's are long and tedious so don't wait until last minute to do them. I wish I could take orgo 2 with him!
I took Organic Chemistry I with Prof. Schnarr and I credit my C+ to joining an Excel group, attending LRC, and going to office hours. I was prepared to struggle in the class, but I managed time for life and my other courses. I found the way he writes exams and explains concepts to be straightforward. Lots of OWLS, my advice is to start them early!
He made the material as easy as orgo possibly could seem. Very interesting and would make sure the majority of the class understood the difficult material before moving on. Makes the lectures fun and interesting. Good bit of homework as all chem classes at UMass. Definitely a good choice of professor if you have to take orgo.
best orgo Professor hands down. He is fair and teaches you the material very well. He is also really funny. he also looks/sounds like seth rogen.
If you have to take Orgo, absolutely take it with Schnarr. It's a difficult subject but the tries to make it as clear as possible and is one of the most understanding and patient professors I've ever had. He doesn't mind spending a lot of time in class making sure everyone gets it. The only thing is he doesn't have real slides; just drawings.
Overall, Schnarr is a good guy. He'll answer any question you have and is very patient. However, it's frustrating that some of the OWL homework is unrelated to what we go over in class and is not even on the exam. It feels like a waste of time. I rarely read the textbook because it just confuses me more.
Professor Schnarr is a great professor and he is good at specifying what his exams are based on. He tries to make sure that he answers all the questions that his students have in class. The OWLs are extremely challenging and the course textbook is not very relevant to what you learn in lecture.
Owl homework was definitely the worst thing about this class. Some are topics that he doesn't even teach or test on. Completing them all is very difficult. The TA for this class is the true hero. I would strongly recommend attending all of them. If you get a good one, the lectures won't even be needed. Practice tests are the same as the actual ones
Prof Schnarr gives straightforward explanations and his exams are more than fair. There's a large volume of homework to be done before each exam, so allot your time wisely. The exams themselves can get tricky but are totally fair. Also, his voice sounds kind of like Barack Obama if you close your eyes.
OWL's are due a week after the exam, which is fine and all. But he doesn't tell us what chapters he will talk about the following class and he takes his time moving on to other chapters. Lectures are not helpful in preparing for the exam unless it is the 2 classes before the exam in which he goes over the answers. Exams are too conceptual.
I honestly do not know why so many people are writing this man a bad review all of a sudden. He is a super nice guy who will answer any question you have at any time in class. Yes his exams can be difficult, but this is college and you are responsible for independent learning as well. His homework covers topics more in depth which is good!
I was terrified to take organic chemistry, but loved learning from Dr. Schnarr and would consider him as one of the best professors I've ever had. You have to go to class and pay attention, (SI and review sessions are extremely helpful as well) but if you do and are familiar with everything on the practice exams then you'll do well in this class.
Pro. Schnarr is an amazing professor who cares about his student's comprehension and teaches from a genuine desire to inspire. He was attentive and available for any questions. He instills confidence and makes sure everyone is on the same page and prepared for exams. The best professor I've had a UMASS Amherst, by far!
Loooooved Schnarr. I wish I could have him for my other chemistry oriented classes. He's funny and has an interesting means of teaching through class discussions. This worked really with me so I was bummed when he got sick this past semester. But he's getting better! DO choose him if you can. You won't regret it. He truly was an awesome professor.
Wes the orgo SI is the only reason I passed this class. Professor schnarr is awesome too but he was sick for most of the semester. Go to Wes' SIs and you will be fine on exams. 3 exams, 3 quizzes, and homework are your grades.
Make sure you ask questions in class if you are not understanding the material. Schnarr will keep reviewing the topic and go as slow as the class needs. The class only gets fast paced when students don't let him know they are confused!
Nathan is an amazing person and teacher. He really cares about his students individually and isn't just teacher just to teach. He has a passion for what he is doing and wants to transfer that passion over to his students, which I totally admire. He scaled tests when tests needed to be scaled and put our thoughts before his, always. Great guy!
The only thing that saved me in this class was reading the book and taking notes alongside it. He was a fine teacher, but didn't teach to the exam. He cares about chemistry a lot, but I just cared more about my grade. He promised to scale and my grade was not scaled. Tough class in general, but read the book and you're good.
Best organic chemistry professor. There surprisingly isn't too much information on the exams, and the SI will teach exactly what you need to know. Nate teaches extra material and some of the OWL problems are really unnecessary, but if you do them all its a free 40% of your grade.
Organic chem, in general, is a class that you need to devote a lot of time into in order to get an A. His lectures are enjoyable; it's clear that he really wants everyone to do well. He spends a lot of time going into far more detail than is required for the exam, so I would suggest going to all the SI sessions and tutoring if you want to do well.
Shoutout to Wes. Best SI in the world and the only reason I am getting A's on exams. This class requires a lot of individual effort but you can do well, extremely well actually, if you attend and understand the SI sessions. Schnarr is an amazing guy, but he's more moral support. Class is just a large discussion. Wes is where I learn things.
Nate is awesome and super good looking but the lectures can be kind of pointless and doesn't prepare you that well for exams or OWLs. The SI sessions are way more helpful and informative than the lectures themselves. If you have Wes as an SI you're golden.
Not the greatest lecturer. Explains concepts verbally too much and orgo is something you need to visually see to understand. Is vague when explaining things as well. Needed to attend SI sessions to understand most things properly. But, exams closely resemble graded practice exams and the answers to the practice exams are given out at SI.
Fair class, Schnarr is the man. I gotta give my respect to the SI Wes, he was honestly the best teacher I have ever had in my life. He was quick with responces to questions, his SI sheets really really helped for the exam. He is graduating so he is not going to be here next semester.
Exams and grading are extremely fair they are exactly like the practice exam. The practice exam is also 10 percent of your grade and there is an SI session that explains the practice exam before it is due. You can tell he wants you to understand if your going to take the class take it with him.
I survived off this class from the SIs and the practice exam which is VERY similar to the actual exam. The owls can be hard so make sure to not wait till the last second, I found myself worrying more about those than the actual exam. Schnarr is a nice guy but sometimes skips over things and just expects you to learn them yourself.
Good class with Schnarr......b/c Wes is the SI. Go to Wes SI sessions and do the owls and you can get any grade you want. Truly the best SI ever, he should teach chem 261 seeing as he understands it better than most professors
A nice guy. Clear powerpoints with good time to take notes. Good with questions. Most of our class did bad on our last exam so he curved it for everyone. Lecture can be boring but that's not his fault, Chem 111 is just lame. His voice is deep and smooth so it will lull you to sleep if you let it, also not his fault though. OWLs are very important.
Scharr had very clear expectations for his exams which was nice - but also the exams were like 90% of the grade so you needed to do well on them. There is an opportunity for extra credit with the owls but I think this changes based on the class averages.
Schnarr is the best. He genuinely cares about each and everyone one of his students . I would 100% take another class with him again
Schnarr is a great professor. Chemistry can be a difficult course for a lot of students, however Schnarr does his best to make the material understandable and manageable. He is very personable and works hard to be available to students as much as possible, as well as answer questions in a clear and concise way. I would definitely recommend him.
Organic chem is hard in general. Be prepared to memorize A LOT of things that may or may not make sense. Howevr Schnarr makes simplifies everything during lecture. He is caring and loves what he does. He is always willing to take 3-5 minutes to explain something if asked by a student even if it's during lecture. BEST CHEM PROFESSOR. GO TO SI!!!
Nathan is an amazing professor. He cares about his students and loves his profession. If you do the work and care about the class, you will get an A. He drops the lowest test if the final is greater than that lower score. Highly recommend.
This was an amazing class. I learned so much and it set me up so well for more advanced chem classes at UMass. He is funny and definitely cares about the things he is teaching. The tests are important to your grade, but not super hard as long as you just pay attention. Make sure you actually do the owl work, they help a lot.
Professor Schnarr is seriously the best chem professor out there. His class was really easy and he gives extra credit. He assigns mandatory practice exams that are very similar to the real exam. The final consisted of exact questions from previous exams, which made it easier. Schnarr knows his stuff and he was way better than my AP chem teacher.
Professor Schnarr makes the material very clear in lecture and practice exams are almost identical to the actual exams. There are a lot of OWLs but you have unlimited attempts.
Schnarr is an amazing professor. His lectures were my favorite to go to and they went by in the blink of an eye. I took chemistry in high school and Schnarr cleared up many concepts that I was confused about back then. Practice exams are your saving grace and are basically the exact same as the exam. Make sure you do the Owls. Easy A.
Mixed opinions on Schnarr. His lectures i sometimes found boring and he often glossed over important subject matter that was typically on the test. Definitely attend review sessions often and complete OWLs. Although he want he best teacher i do feel he generally wanted his students to learn and was very kind and helpful when talking to him.
Took this as a Gen-Ed. Class itself wasn't too difficult, but lots of work, Schnarr is very understanding of his students and gives all the information you will need for the exams. Practice exams are pretty much the same as the exams, and the final. Make sure you do the OWLs and understand them. Show up to class if you want, I did.
Very good lecturer, especially for the material. I'm a comp sci major and had to take this class and Schnarr made it bearable, he's great.
He is the best professor at UMass. I struggled in his class and once I went to his office hours, he was constantly making sure I succeeded in the material. He truthfully cares and hes a professor that if he sees you putting in effort, he will acknowledge it. Highly recommend taking class with him! Hes my favorite professor ever
I love Nate Schnarr. I hate chem, but literally just listening to Schnarr talk was worth going to class. This class is an easy A, and I wish I could have Schnarr for ever chem class I'll ever have to take!
This man is a godsend and I appreciate him every single day. Nate made chem so much fun, the lectures were very engaging, and towards the end of the semester, I couldn't believe that I had actually enjoyed chem.
I love this man. He made me want to major in chemistry (but then I took chemistry 112 and now I am like jk). He is such an amazing guy. He made me inspired and have less stress because his class was not super time consuming but an important class and I truly wanted to go all the time.
he's chill and easygoing and I can tell he really wants us all to succeed. that said, orgo will NEVER be easy. he doesnt have notes slides or a textbook but draws on powerpoint slides and posts those so if you miss class you will never know what any of it means. his tests are on paper and he gives a fair amount of owls. super nice guy though
Professor Schnarr is really amazing!! A great professor to have for Chem 111. Attendance is not mandatory and he posts all of his lectures. He gives extra credit and other opportunities for grade improvement. Only work outside of class is the OWLs. Totally recommend :)
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!! I took chem 111 with professor Schnarr as well which made me want to take orgo with him again. He cares so much about our success and explains everything so well. I literally love him so much I can go on about how good of an instructor he is forever. The class isn't super easy but only reason I got an A was because of him.
He's a really nice guy, seems to actually care about us and our well being / success in his class and other classes. He gives a lot of good advice if you talk to him, or even just in front of the whole class sometimes.
Prof Scnharr is the best! I have always struggled with chemistry, but he made it make sense for once. He is very fair with grading and exams. A great teacher who cares about his students. Go to lecture!
He really takes time to explain things during class, so attending lectures is DEFINITELY recommended, however it is not mandatory so missing a class here and there won't hurt. DO THE OWLS. He drops the lowest grades but they really help with exams.
He's a very chill professor that only tests you on materials that he expects you to know. Participation is optional but go to his classes because he covers a lot of material in one day and it can be overwhelming.
Super easy teacher, and is very clear and concise. I had him online this semester and it was only prerecorded lectures so I never actually met him. I love the class though he is AWESOME! A lot of homework though, tests are relatively easy if you study.
Nathan Schnarr is hands down THE best professor I have ever had. Chem is tough, but he makes it bearable. He cares so much about his students and accommodated them so well during the pandemic. Gives extra credit on homework, open note exams (for the pandemic only i think), and his practice exams help a LOT. You won't regret taking his class.
Prof. Schnarr is a great person, and he explains concepts thoroughly. The course is asynchronous, which is nice because you can get the lectures done early. If you are confused on a topic, I recommend going to office hours because he is very helpful! The lectures are usually pretty short and have rarely been 50 min. He cares about his students!
loved this class - chem is definitely a hard subject, but prof schnarr made it easier. lectures were asynch, but you get credit for watching them. definitely a lot of homework, but if you do some after every lecture it's really not that bad. all exams were open notes, but that might've been due to the fact we're in a pandemic.
Hands down the best proff I have ever had. This guy is amazing at teaching, explains everything perfectly. He literally guides you on how to do every problem and even does practice exam walkthroughs. Just try not slacking on his videos and MAKE SURE you do all of your OWLs they are kinda annoying. He made me like chem and I hate chem.
Its chemistry it's not gonna be easy. Profesor Schnarr does a great job teaching this class. The lectures are clear and easy to follow. If you study an average amount of time and pay attention in lecture you'll be good. Explains everything well and overall made Chem easier.
Chemistry is not an easy subject, but Professor Schnarr makes his explanations very clear to understand. There is a lot of OWL homework but it truly does get you ready for the exams on OWL that he gives, which is a good thing since there's only 25 questions on each one and its easy to do poorly. Great guy would definitely take his class again.
Professor Schnarr went above and beyond to make sure his students succeeded. The lectures were clear and concise and provided everything you needed to do well. Chem definitely wasnt the easiest course but his method of teaching made it doable and I definitely recommend him. As always chem required studying but Prof. Schnarr helped a ton!
I took AP Chemistry so I didn't find the coursework to be that challenging. When I had to review a certain subject, Professor Schnarr's lectures were clear and concise for me to remember and understand it again. If you have a familiar background in Chemistry in hs, this class will be an easy breeze if you just watch the lectures and do the work.
Lectures are OK. He has problems throughout them to apply what you just learned. Very organized. But he doesn't seem to fully explain anything, nor does he want to. I went to his office hours twice and both times he was annoyed to answer questions about chemistry, or he would just quote what he said in the lecture. SI sessions helped a lot.
I was scared but Nate explained content clearly! Will take orgo w him. Lectures are recorded so self motivate. Recommend annotating slides he provides & going to SI. Office hrs 1x a week. 3 exams & final. If final is better than avg of 1,2,3 it will replace lowest. PTL for extra credit. Practice exams just like test and he makes review vid.
Best course I took this semester. Lectures are clear and easy to follow with plenty of practice problems. Practice exams prepare you well for the real exam. Homework is easy and helpful (do it multiple times until you get a 100) and a great grade booster. Stay on top of the lecture viewing every week, do the OWLs, and this course is an easy A.
Professor Schnarr was a really great professor. I already had a pretty good foundation in chemistry, so I thought the class was pretty easy. His lectures were pre-recorded and posted online. They were all really informative and helpful. The exams were pretty easy as well, as long as you do the OWL homework problems.
Nathan Schnarr is the best chem professor at umass. Cool guy who tells you exactly what is expected. Chem is a hard class but Nathan took time to explain and give examples in lectures. Class was asynchronous so you could go at your own pace. Owls are annoying and you need to stay on top of them. Nathan is a really solid choice.
Nathan is a really nice professor and I could tell he was really committed to making the class comprehensible and accessible even though it was online and asynchronous. However Chem 111 was extremely difficult for me because I do not test well and have trouble understand math especially when applied to abstract scientific concepts.
As a returning student who was a bit rusty with Chemistry (2 years since I spent a few weeks in a chem class, 6 years since I completed one), Professor Schnarr made things simple and I was able to do pretty well without once using the textbook. Sometimes things weren't covered in lecture, but it was easy enough to learn via the owls. He's the best!
Nathan is probably one of the best professors I have ever had. He is so thorough with his explanations in a class as difficult as organic chemistry. In addition, he is available during office hours and the SI's are really great. Class is really test heavy though, so make sure you study and you will do well.
Lecture videos between 20-40 minutes each. Slides posted before lectures. OWL homework and end of chapters questions for each chapter. Practice exams are very similar to the actual exam. He is very clear on his expectations. Schnarr is a great professor and very accessible. Really loved this class one of my favorites I've taken at Umass.
I had him for Chem 112 and Chem 262 and he is one of the clearest professors at Umass. He is also very caring and considerate to his students. Orgo 2 is not an easy subject, but he certainly helped made it managable.
BEST LECTURER EVER. Seriously. I understood the material so well because of these lectures. Combo of slides and schnarr is goated. Slides are actually perfect. Loved the system of post lecture slides for each chapter. Exams are very reasonablechallenging. big advice: try to understand underlying principles of mechanisms. memorization not the move
I'm organic chemistry impaired, but I had everything I needed to overcome my lack of talent. Good lectures, pretty helpful assignments, reasonable tests. For a normal professor, 4/5. For an organic chemistry professor? 6/5
Schnarr is a real god. Your life won’t be complete unless you have him or Dr. Surampudi for ORGO.
Attendance wasn't mandatory and the class lectures were recorded and posted on echo. All the owl homework assignments were do on the night of the exam. Exams were worth a large portion of the final grade.
Professor Schnarr is a good lecturer- most of my issues with the class are with the General Chemistry department at UMass and not him specifically. The class is set up very fairly- my only complaint is that the practice exams are mandatory and graded based on accuracy, not completion, which I find to be a little unfair.
Dr. Schnarr is a great professor who really takes time to explain the material to his students and he's probably the most patient man I've met in my life. He knows the material can be tough and will always go through it again if a student is confused. He gives a lot of opportunities to practice for the exam. He's such a chill prof and really cares.
Prof. Schnarr is an AMAZING lecturer. I hated chem 111 but loved chem 112 probably because of how interesting his lectures were. Lectures aren't mandatory, and he records the class. His tests are a good amount of multiple choice and very fair. Great Prof!!
The best thing about Schnarr is that he is aware that Chem 112 content is difficult to digest. He has the patience to revisit and rexplain concepts as many times as necessary. His lectures directly address the content you will see on homework, quizzes and exams. Schnarr makes Chem 112 as manageable as it possibly can be. Take his class!
The class is hard and he is aware of that and tries to make it as easy as possible and will spend less/more time on topics based upon how the students feel. There are 3 quizzes and 2 graded practice exams before each exam and no iClicker. OWL is great for practice for this class. Read the textbook on OWL it helped IMO. Will take orgo with him!
Orgo is a hard class but Schnarr made it manageable. One exam can be dropped if you do well on the final. Homework was light and due the night of exams. Practice exams are graded but overall act as grade boosters. He is also very flexible and even gave me an exam point back for explaining my reasoning. Great professor and super nice guy overall.
Orgo is a tough class to begin with, Professor Schanrr makes the material much easier to understand with his lectures and way of teaching. He teaches at a good pace and is very clear on what is expected of you to succeed in his class. He is also a very caring professor and is willing to give students extra time when needed
I struggled in chem 111 but prof. schnarr made all the difference. I found myself even looking forward to going to chemistry. This semester was so much easier, he truly wants you to succeed. The practice exams are graded but they really do prepare you for the test. prof schnarr is the best
Would give an 8/5 if I could. Schnarr is talented at teaching, and he's a great man: super personable and someone you get to know. Unlike McDaniel, Nathan Schnarr was not condescending or rude, but rather he was very humble, considerate, respectful, and he clearly wanted his students to succeed.
Always take ORGO with him or Sravan Surampudi whenever you get a golden opportunity to stay away from McDaniel.
Sometimes he can go fast in the lectures, but either reviewing the lecture videos or the owl textbook was really helpful for me. There's a lot of hw assignments, but he gives you plenty of time to do them. You are graded on accuracy for the practice exams and quizzes. The final exam mirrors previous exams, practice exams, and quizzes.
I failed the first exam and was so close to withdrawing but ended up with an A despite a few missed homeworks and a B average on the rest of my exams. Probably went to half the lectures in person, but watched the rest online. Go to the SI reviews. DO NOT TAKE LAB (269) AT THE SAME TIME - just take lab your next semester.
If you are a chem major or like the subject, I would recommend. If these do not apply to you, I would avoid Schnarr. As one who is usually an A-student, exams were always extremely hard and I always got Cs despite endless study. His forced exam prep clearly wasn't helpful enough for me. To do well you need to do your endless OWLS many times over.
One of the best professors that I have had. Lectures optional and does give extra credit if you compete all the homework. do practice exams with friends because they are graded for correctness. Exams are related to practice exams so I would look back when studying.
HE IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. TAKE HIM FOR CHEM 112 He wants you to learn not memorize the concepts. By the time he is done with you, you will want to major in Chem. He cares about students passing the class and did I mention how humble he is omg! He is more than an angel to me. I will take him for Orgo!
I took this professor for Chem 112 and he is the best professor I have had so far. He is so nice and the lectures are not mandatory because they are recorded. There are practice exams that one takes before the actual exam and they are very helpful. Makes it very easy to understand.
I really like his teaching style. He makes chemistry easy to understand and he's really understanding about extending deadlines for hw and even exams if something comes up. Practice exams are really similar to the exam. Take this class with prof Schnarr!!
Very good at teaching. Makes everything clear and gives good resources for each exam.
Terrific professor, exams can be challenging but are certainly doable if you study. His lectures are very clear and provide an excellent foundation for higher-level chemistry courses.
Professor Schnarr is awesome. He's extremely helpful- Even though I personally learn more from just doing the OWLs and independent study, I still attended lectures out of pure respect for him. He never gets impatient with students who are having trouble understanding material and is always empathetic, being that this isn't an easy course.
Lectures were engaging, and I learned a lot of chemistry because of that. You can tell he's got a lot of experience as a chemist and it motivates you to pay attention to what he's teaching. I'm taking him again for Orgo 1.
He is one of the best professors I ever had at UMass. He always makes things easier for the students. I would definitely recommend Prof. Schnarr.
If you can take his class do it!! Took him for Chem 112 and will be taking him for Org Chem too. Hes very easy-going and nice!
Really great professor + good person. The way he explains the concepts makes them seem simple + it's easy to ask questions when something is confusing. If you don't go to the lectures the textbook on OWL is helpful + mirrors what he teaches in class. Exams aren't curved but they are super fair the questions are always similar to the practice tests
Records lectures, so attendance isn't mandatory, but overall a great professor. Lectures are clear and very easy to understand. Can tell he really cares about his students.
i'm not a huge fan of the graded practice exams, but he's a pretty good professor. exams are fair, attendance not required, there are owl hws and quizzes. owl hws are a lot easier this semester than 261, but his are all due on the day of exam and quizzes are unlimited time + 6 questions (vs surampudi's 1 hr time limit on 10 questions).
Nathan Schnarr really cares for his students. He provides a lot of office hours in which you can ask for help on homework, quizzes, or any material. I must say orgo is hard but this has nothing to do with Nathan. It is evident he really enjoys teaching and helping his students. Highly recommend taking any class with him, he's the best!
Best professor I have ever had. Made difficult topics easy to understand. Clearly passionate about teaching and is willing to take accountability for errors he made, often gives all students credit for an exam question if he realized it was worded unfairly or confusing. Take his class if you have the opportunity
This guys the goat. Content is difficult at times but he does a great job explaining and answering questions. Study the practice exams and you'll ace the real ones. All around great guy and professor
Schnarr is awesome. If you see his name as an option for class selection, sign up. Grading is distributed over a lot of categories so it's pretty hard for any one assignment to mess up your grade. Exams are exactly like the practice exams and you have all the way until the relevant exam to do each of the homeworks. This class is awesome.
Prof.Schnarr is a great teacher of organic chemistry, a difficult subject. Lectures are helpful, geared towards helping students understand, and paced so there's time to answer questions. He adjusts the course schedule to the pace of the class, not rushing subjects and allowing extra time for HW. The exams are very similar to practice exams.
Schanarr is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is caring and supportive while also being an excellent professor. The key to crushing his class is to go to class and really learn from him. When you get to exams with a bit of practice and studying you will have no problem. He is wonderful and I was so lucky to have had him for 112 and 261
Professor Schnarr is by far my favorite chemistry professor. Organic chemistry is hard, but he made it so much easier to understand and his lectures will not bore you. His exams are not bad at all, questions are taken from practice exams and quizzes. He is super helpful during office hours.
Great lecturer, is very willing to work around your schedule for 1:1 help. Final replaces lowest midterm. Makes everything so easy and understanding, points out the things to know instead of yelling out reaction mechanisms he'll point out the commonalities between them. Wants you to succeed. Final was all questions from past 3 exams. Best prof!
Schnarr is one of the most caring profs I have ever had! He is amazing at teaching orgo and gives extra credit at the end of the year through homework. Go to SIs!! They saved me throughout the year and I always looked back on worksheets and PE before tests. The tests were normally exactly like the PE that were graded.
One of the best Professors. Super caring and respectful. The first exam is easy, the second and the third are kinda hard but doable. His final is picked from questions in the past three exams plus a little new chapter after exam 3, which is super low effort during the craziness of finals.
Schnarr is the best he made orgo really easy to learn. It was helpful for me to go to most of the lectures and take notes but he posts all of them on echo so you don't have to show up if you don't want to. Really chill workload and the final is a grade booster because it's questions from previous exams.
Schnarr very much cares about students and student success. You absolutely will not find a better professor on campus than Nathan Schnarr
The sweetest guy on Earth, sincerely an amazing professor that cares so so so much about his students and cares about us actually learning. He lets people ask many questions during lectures to make sure we understand material before moving on. Explains topics well. Extremely approachable, funny, kind. I'll always recommend Schnarr!
very good at explaining everything
Schnarr is by far the best professor I have ever had. He makes his lectures easy to understand and will answer every question in class until everyone understands before moving on. He is incredibly kind and truly cares so much about his students, and although orgo is a difficult class, he makes it easier to understand and enjoy.
Definitely the best professor I've ever had. I've always struggled in chemistry but he explained everything so well and I actually understood the material in this class. He genuinely cares about his students.
If you can take a professor for orgo, TAKE prof Schnarr. He goes slow, but makes lectures engaging and really informational. He is a kind guy and really caring prof. He makes himself available outside of class and the TA's have good review sessions. Offers extra credit for PLTL and some homework stuff. Good class.
Professor Schnarr makes orgo feel easy. The lectures are slow-paced and Schnarr takes time to make sure to explain things really well. The homework feels super manageable and the practice exams are incredibly reflective of the actual exam. It makes studying easy and low-stress.
If you have to take Chem 261, take it with Schnarr. He makes sure his students understand the material before moving on to the next chapter. The exams are just like the practice exams and the final are a mix of questions from previous exams. Your grade is made up of 5% quizzes, 10% practice exams, 25% OWL HW, and 60% from 3 exams and a final.
Great at teaching and a great guy to be around. He made the subject seem so easy and was very understanding. Very slow pace and answers questions thoroughly, some people don't like that but he gets through the material and you understand it perfectly. No iclicker or attendance is a big plus. Easy exams. Extra credit like crazy. Need I say more?
Orgo with Schnarr was an absolute breeze. He makes it so easy to learn and apply the material that he teaches and he does not count participation. There are plenty of opportunities for extra credit as well.
Kind professor who's engaged in teaching. Quizzes, practice exams, and midterms/final are multiple choice questions on Owl(v1). Homework on Owl(v2), easy to follow and has multiple chances to get correct answer. I found Orgo much easier than GenChem; don't stress that this is a 'hard' course. It's very manageable and Schnarr is great to teach it.
Schnarr is truly one of the best professors here at Umass. He really seems like he understands the average person taking chemistry and really wants them to understand and succeed. I had him for both chem 112 and 261 and my grades were the best I have ever gotten in a chem class due to how he teaches and grading criteria. Breaks down concepts well.
Professor Schnarr made Orgo 1 a BREEZE. The 20% extra credit on OWL homework boosted my course grade to 106%. His exams are exactly like the practice exams so if you study those you will do great. I'm so lucky to be having him for Orgo 2 as well next semester.
Amazing Prof! I am awful at chemistry and ended with an A (due to HW extra credit). Offers great explanations and plenty of practice/review. Tests reflect practice exams, nothing tricky. HW is hard but complete as much as you can so the extra credit can boost your grade.
Schnarr made orgo fun. This man knows exactly how to teach without being to harsh or too lenient. If you show up to lecture, and do your OWL's, youll be able to do fine on the exams. Grading policies help you out where necessary. Take him if you can!
Amazing lecturer, takes the time to clear everyone's doubts in a respectful and patient manner. No iClickers (for orgo) but ample practice problems. Makes you love chemistry
Prof. Schnarr is amazing and if you attend his lectures, you'll be just fine. the only annoying part of this class is that the homework system (Owl v2) is very complicated and difficult to naviagte.
Schnarr is a great prof who clearly explains concepts and makes organic chemistry more understandable. His exams are fair and he gives lots of opportunities to make sure you understand material. He is always willing to explain concepts as he clearly wants his students to do well. If you have him as an option definitely take a class with him.
HE IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. I took him for Chem 112, 261 and now here. I love you Schnarr
He is genuinely the best chemistry professor I've had so far. His practice exams are almost identical to the actual exams so there are no surprises and his lectures are entertaining. He also drops at least 10% of the owl homework so if you do all of them - you will get a few extra credit points added to your final grade. Easy A in my opinion.
Can't recommend Schnarr more. He makes what would usually be a tougher class extremely digestible/easy. His practice exams/quizzes give a VERY good idea of what will be on the exams so there are no surprises. He drops minimum 10% of the hw so doing it gives a good chunk of extra credit. Super accessible whenever needed too. This guy is the man
One of the easiest classes ive ever taken in no small part to how accessible and genuinely caring of a professor Schnarr is. The exams have no surprises plus 10% extra credit on homework grade if all are completed (worth 25% of grade). Some material might require some brain power but nothing was that hard
Schnarr takes a lot of time to make the material digestible and easier to understand. This class is not easy, but the lectures are incredibly helpful. I didn't find reading the textbook to be helpful for my understanding but the homework is great practice. Practice exams are super similar to the real exams and make studying much easier.
Professor Schnarr is amazing- this class was honestly a breeze and he includes lots of questions from quizzes/practice exams on actual exams. He is super accessible before and after class and there are plenty of extra credit opportunities available including OWLS and PLTL
I was terrified of taking this class at first, but honestly Prof Schnarr is excellent. He is so genuinely kind and the exams are not hard if you are dilligent with studying. He really cares about his students and always makes time to meet with them outside of class. Can't say enough good things, don't take orgo with anyone else!
makes orgo easy and is an awesome guy. took 261 w him also. lot of extra cred opportunity. never attended a single lecture, theyre posted on echo360. hariri is harder from what i hear but does a lot of practice problems. up to you, but schnarr is easy and a great teacher so id take him personally.
Grading structure makes it easier to succeed - you always have another chance to improve your exam grade by taking the final. HW is a major part of the grade, and all hw corresponding to exam content is due after the exam! Lectures are engaging. Pacing of lectures corresponding to exams/course content may not be perfect, but we can forgive him.
If you take this professor you will most likely pass due to how easy the exams are and the extra credit
Schnarr was a great professor. Chem 262 was way more enjoyable than 261. Practice exams are almost identical to actual exams. He wants you to learn and like organic chemistry, and he is very accessible. Despite being a 9am, he made me want to go to class. take him if you can!
Nathan actually cared about his students which is not something you see in a chem professor often! I really enjoyed going to his classes and he explained the concepts in ways I have not seen professors do.
Lectures were awesome and made organic chemistry easy to understand. He is clearly passionate and understands the subject very well and is always willing to answer questions in class. The workload is reasonable as long as it is spaced out. He is also very understanding and is willing to work with you. Accessible during his office hours.
Super understanding and receptive to students. Exams reuse a lot of questions from homework and quizzes which is super nice. Makes understanding organic chemistry very easy. Schnarr is the goat
Schnarr is a great professor.
Schnarr is a very caring professor who wants his students to do well. He gives so much extra credit which makes orgo less scary. Always willing to take questions in class and gives practice exams before every exam which are helpful for studying. I should have gotten a B at most but ended class with an A because of OWL extra credit.
Simply the best chemistry professor. His exams were all multiple choice, similar to his practice exams and quizzes. Those are also very fair. As long as you go to class and do the homework you will be fine. You get extra credit for PLTL too so go to that!! He's super understanding and offers time to meet a lot.
He is a fantastic professor who makes organic chemistry interesting and accessible to everybody. If more universities had professors as talented as him, less people would dread taking organic chemistry. I would give him 100/5 stars if I could- simply phenomenal.
He's a nice guy. Exams are short and multiple choice. Harder than gen chem but schnarr made the material easier to understand. Doing all of the homework and PLTL will get you about 5 or so points of extra credit if I remember correctly.
My fav chem prof I've had at UMASS. Breaks down complex material easily and helps you build a strong foundation in understanding orgo. Schnarr is very receptive to questions, will never make you feel dumb, available for office hours, good with extending hw deadlines, exams just like practice exams. I've fully gone to him when he wasn't my prof.
Schnarr is the best! Orgo is not an easy subject, but this class helped me truly understand the concepts. The exams are very similar to the practice exams and quizzes, and the final exam rule is a lifesaver. He cares about his students and attending lecture is not mandatory.
Nathan Schnarr my goat
Imo everyone loves Schnarr. Orgo is hard but he does a great job explaining things and is super chill in general.
Honestly, the best chemistry professor in the department - especially for non-chem majors! He makes you love the subject and feel capable of understanding it no matter what. Will take extra time out to explain a concept till you get it.
The hype is real. Best Chem professor at this school by a far (coming from someone who had Al-Hariri, Taffet and Farkas).... He is amazing. Think I have over a 100 in this class. I didn't think he would really be as great as everyone makes him out to be but wow be is. 262 was way easier than 261 for me bc of him
If you can get Prof Schnarr, you will literally get above a 90. You still have to try, but there is barely any owl homework, and the quizzes are pretty easy. Exams are exactly like practice exams. It was a very fun and easy class.
He is a laid back professor who just wants to see you succeed and maybe learn chemistry. I think it is the easiest way to get an A in orgo if you are looking for that. He is also a really good professor and is very helpful in office hours.
Schnarr is an amazing professor. He really cares about student success and is very helpful/understanding in office hours which he holds both in person and online multiple times a week. 3 exams + final with OWL homework (which you can get extra credit for). The one thing that kinda sucked is that his practice exams are graded on correctness.
Coming from someone who STRUGGLED in orgo1, schnarr is great. His practice exams are graded on correctness which sucks, but hey... if you do well on them it boosts ur grade. Take him!!
all around great best professor you could possibly have
I don't like his method of grading. He also did not give much homework which is weird to complain about but there's no room to practice. Practice exams are grading on accuracy. Exams have a multiple choice in class portion and the open response is take-home. His lectures were very uninteresting.
I took his class two years ago, but I still consider him one of the most genuine and kind professors I've ever had. He somehow made organic chemistry feel like one of my easiest classes. Some people are really amazing at what they do- and Nathan Schnarr is one of them.
Nathans the goat. Really nice guy. Only thing that sucks about the class is not having a ton of like homework assignments to pad the grade (like in gen chem). Easy to get in touch with, he explains material well, and overall very chill. Wish he was teaching 266
Great class! He is super receptive to questions during lecture, and explains each concept in manageable pieces.
Teaches in a way that most students can understand, but also leaves out important material for chem 262. Spends a lot of time on easy to understand concepts, but skips pasts or speeds through confusing concepts. Easier multiple choice exams similar to chem 111 and 112. Relied heavily on si sessions and owl quizzes, practice exams.
The content gets difficult as the class goes on, but he's a super accessible professor. Always willing to answer any question and support as necessary. The final exam score can replace 2 midterm exam scores if you do better. Amazing professor overall.
